INTRODUCING TANZANIA

Magic mountains, great lakes and dream safaris

Tanzania has it all For those unfamiliar with our country, Tanzania is located on the coast of East Africa. It borders Kenya in the north and Mozambique in the south and acts as a gateway to various landlocked countries to the west such as Zambia, Burundi, Rwanda, Uganda, Malawi and the Democratic Republic of Congo.

NATURAL WONDERS Tanzania’s abundance of wildlife and World Heritage Sites speaks for itself. The Ngorongoro crater is a breathtaking natural wonder, the Serengeti boasts the annual migration of millions of wildebeest, Lake Tanganyika is among the most beautiful lakes in the world, while Lake Manyara was a favourite of the American writer Ernest Hemingway. Our rock art cave sites at Olduvai Gorge are steeped in history, the

|6

unspoilt Selous, Ruaha and Katavi game reserves are home to a variety of predators, while Mount Kilimanjaro – the highest mountain in Africa – is a magnet for ambitious climbers. Whether you’re an adventure junkie, an animal lover or a history fanatic, there is something of interest to every visitor to Tanzania.

PRISTINE BEACHES While many people associate Tanzania with a safari trip, the unknown beaches of Dar es Salaam make for a relaxing getaway. There are various luxury hotels and lodges dotted along the shoreline, many of which are just a short drive from the centre of Dar. The coastal city and its adjoining beaches are often overlooked as a tourist destination, but the secluded and peaceful stretches of sand, coupled with the city’s many

historical sites, are a great way to spend your vacation. It is impossible to discuss Tanzania’s beaches without mentioning the Zanzibar archipelago. With its reputation as an untouched paradise, Zanzibar is recognised as one of Africa’s top beach locations. Unlike most popular holiday destinations, the Spice Islands have managed to keep their unique culture, unspoilt seafronts and fine Swahili architecture. As well as white beaches and clear turquoise-blue waters, the islands have plenty to offer tourists, including five-star accommodation, fresh gastro food at top restaurants, a Unesco World Heritage Site in Stone Town and the friendliest of local people. Travellers simply cannot visit Tanzania without discovering the magic of Zanzibar.

WILDLIFE Away from the beaches and islands, any of Tanzania’s 15 national parks makes an ideal destination with a chance to see the Big Five (buffalo, elephant, leopard, lion and rhino). There is nothing as exhilarating as seeing one of Africa’s greatest predators up close and in its natural habitat. Watch these splendid animals as they hunt their prey through the tall grasses, protect their offspring or just laze in the sun. Renowned for offering some of the finest game viewing holidays and tours in Africa, Tanzania has

a vast array of wildlife that is now flourishing thanks to strict conservation measures. The Tanzanian Tourist Board continues to provide a safe, quality safari environment for visitors from around the world while preserving the country’s national parks and game reserves and their inhabitants. We invite you to experience the excitement of viewing the animals that make up our thriving eco-system.

However you choose to spend your time in Tanzania, we welcome you. We encourage you to immerse yourself in our culture, mix with our people, try our foods and, above all, enjoy your stay in our fantastic country.

Tanzania: the cultural soul of Africa

Tanzania has a rich cultural heritage based on a mix of influences from over 120 tribes and its cultural diversity is a continuing source of fascination for historians and travellers alike.

overnight stays in local villages and towns. The National Museum in Dar es Salaam offers monthly cultural programmes that showcase both traditional and contemporary dances.

Leaving your safari vehicle behind and taking a walk through scenic local villages can be a rewarding experience. People in various parts of Tanzania run their own cultural programmes and welcome travellers to their local communities. This brings income directly to local people and helps to build sustainable livelihoods, particularly in rural areas, while providing tourists with a unique and unforgettable insight into Tanzanian life.

Tanzania is one of the most culturally distinct and varied countries in the world. Coffee, bananas, fruit and vegetables are grown on the tropical slopes of Mount Meru and Mount Kilimanjaro, where local guides will proudly describe their carefully cultivated ‘shambas’ (lands). In the north, meanwhile, the famous Maasai people will walk visitors across their plains and share the traditions of the pastoral tribes in which culture is closely linked to nature and wildlife.

Cultural tours can be customised, from half-day excursions to

Why not climb the northern mountains of the agricultural tribes to see how coffee is grown, follow the drumbeats and dances of tribes in the south who have inherited practices from their ancestors, or head to the ocean to understand the history of the Swahili people of coastal Tanzania. And for those who would like to meet fishermen, rainmakers and story-tellers, the land between Serengeti and Lake Victoria is the place to go.

FOOD Food has always had a special place in Tanzanian culture.

The nation’s rich history has produced a cuisine that draws on a wide range of ingredients and flavours. Over the centuries, each of the various groups of settlers, explorers and traders who came to Tanzania from around the world brought their own cooking styles, introduced new recipes and added to Swahili dishes. Tourists are encouraged to try local dishes such as ugali (a stiff maize porridge), mlenda (baobab leaf), machalari (stewed banana plantain, carrot and meat), makande (corn and bean meal) and pilau rice. Nyama choma

(roasted meat) is perhaps the most popular and best known Tanzanian dish. Visitors can organise with their tour guides to spend time with local mamas and learn how to cook a variety of African dishes.

ARTS AND CRAFTS Tanzania’s arts and crafts are a testament to its splendid culture and skilled artisans. Tanzanian art has gained worldwide popularity in recent years and many travellers go there to see and buy the bright Tingatinga paintings, dhow furniture, Maasai handicrafts

Local musicians and dancers in the Serengeti

(from beaded jewellery to wooden sculptures to jute handbags) and vibrant khanga cloth, all on display in the alley shops of Dar es Salaam. Tanzanian art typically uses vibrant colours and in the Maasai tribe each colour has a different meaning. Every bead used in home-made Maasai jewellery and accessories is carefully selected to bring the owner good luck. Maasai crafts make fine souvenirs. If you’re looking to take home a gift or fashion accessory, there’s no better place than a Maasai market to find it.

NATIONAL CAPITAL Tanzania’s capital, Dodoma, is highly recommended as a destination for excursions. The city is a smooth fivehour drive from Dar es Salaam. Dodoma is a good place to visit markets and buy fresh produce while getting a taste of local life. For a bit of adventure, a 45-minute hike to the top of Simba Hill is a must. Simba Hill overlooks Dodoma, providing a bird’seye view of the city.

EXPLORE TANZANIA 2017-18 – CULTURAL TOURISM

In Dar es Salaam a new arts and crafts centre, the Tanzania Centre for Cultural Heritage (TCCH), showcases the work of local craftsmen and sculptors. TCCH has become a recognised platform for resident artists and is a ‘must see’ when visiting Dar.

MUSIC

over the past decade. One new sound that has emerged is bongo flava, a fusion of original African sounds with modern Western hip hop. Tanzania has many rising musical stars, including singers Vanessa Mdee, Diamond and Lady Jay Dee, and bongo flava is becoming more popular across the continent.

Tanzanian music has many distinct sounds, from the traditional African beats to the string-based taarab and the contemporary bongo flava.

The popular Festival of the Dhow Countries is held across two weeks in early July. The highlight is East Africa’s main arts event, the Zanzibar International Film Festival (ZIFF). Festival-goers can enjoy musical performances and film screenings throughout Stone Town.

Traditionally, the Tanzanian tribes played music not for entertainment but for specific social activities such as working, hunting, weddings, funerals and religious ceremonies. Song lyrics are often associated with life events such as birth, love, war and mourning. Taarab music descends from Islamic roots and uses percussion instruments. It is usually linked with coastal areas of Tanzania, including Zanzibar, and is a big part of Swahili social life. The first taarab icon was Siti Binti Saad. Her band was the first from the region to make commercial recordings, back in 1928. Since then bands and musicians such as Bi Kidude, Culture Musical Club, Shakila and Al-Watan have pushed taarab to the forefront of Tanzania’s music scene. Owing to a mix of influences from other countries, the nation’s music industry has seen many changes

FESTIVALS With over 120 ethnic groups, Tanzania has a great number of cultural festivals happening throughout the year. The Wanyambo Festival in early January is one of the best opportunities to experience local culture. The event is staged in the Makumbusho area of Dar es Salaam and features traditional dance, costumes, music and food. The Mzalendo Halisi Music Festival occurs over two days in May in Kijitonyama in north-west Dar es Salaam. The festival includes art and cultural exhibitions.

A ‘must see’ for travellers to Zanzibar is the Mwaka Kogwa Festival in July and August. While village men thrash each other with banana stalks to settle arguments from the previous year, the women dress up, sing and dance. A straw hut is then set on fire and a feast ensues. The coastal town of Bagamoyo holds the Bagamoyo Arts Festival in September each year. It features traditional and contemporary music and dance as well as exhibitions, workshops and acrobatics shows.

TANZANIA TRAVEL TIPS

A guide to

travelling in Tanzania Travelling to – and around – a foreign country can be difficult. There are local customs to get used to and a lot of things to remember. Hopefully, these travel tips will help you make the most of your trip to Tanzania. Language: Tanzania has two official languages: English, and Swahili which developed in eastern Africa about 250 years ago. Both are widely spoken throughout the country. In addition, there are many tribal and regional languages spoken by local people. Why not learn a few phrases and immerse yourself in the culture?

KEY SWAHILI PHRASES: Hello – Habari Welcome – Karibu Good morning – Habari za asubuhi Good afternoon – Habari za mchana How are you? – Hujambo?

| 12

Please – Tafadhali Thank you – Asante How much is this? – Hii ni bei gani? Currency: The national unit of currency is the Tanzanian shilling (TZS) but US dollars (US$) are also used. Passport: A valid passport is needed. Visas: Required of most nonresidents. Business or tourist visas for single entry can be obtained on arrival in Tanzania, subject to immigration requirements being fulfilled. Long-stay or multipleentry visas should be obtained before travelling. Capital city: Dodoma National dialling code: +255 Climate: Tanzania’s climate varies considerably due to its size and

position just south of the equator. The rainy season is normally from March to May and the long dry season from June to October. Short rains may take place at the end of the year before dry weather returns in January and February. Clothing: Because of the unreliability of the Tanzanian weather (outside the long dry season) a range of clothing to suit all conditions is recommended. Cool, loose-fitting garments, longsleeved tops and waterproofs will all help to make your trip as comfortable as possible.

Drinking water: Bottled mineral water is recommended.

TANZANIA TRIVIA Tanzania’s population of 54,308,000 includes some 120 tribal groups. The largest is the Sukuma, who live in the northwest. Tanzania is the largest country in East Africa. It covers 947,300 sq km and includes the islands of Zanzibar, Pemba and Mafia. Mount Kilimanjaro is one of Tanzania’s greatest tourism attractions. It is Africa’s highest mountain, standing 5,895 metres (19,341 ft) above sea level. Lake Manyara National Park, in Tanzania, is home to the world’s only tree-climbing lions.

Gombe National Park waterfall

Tanzania has the largest concentration of wildlife per square kilometre, with over 4 million wild animals representing some 430 species and subspecies. Some of the world’s oldest human remains, dating back over 2 million years, have been found at Olduvai Gorge in Tanzania. They include fossilised bones and stone tools. Tanzania shares its borders with seven other countries: Kenya, Uganda, Rwanda, Burundi, Zambia, Malawi and Mozambique. Tanzania is bordered by three of the world’s most magnificent lakes: Victoria, Tanganyika and Nyasa.

BIRTH OF A NATION African tribes have lived in the area now called Tanzania for thousands of years. In the 18th century Arabs enslaved the native people and Zanzibar became a hub for the Arab slave trade. Evidence of this history can still be seen in Zanzibar today. From 1890 Britain controlled Zanzibar while Germany occupied Tanganyika – now the mainland part of Tanzania. Britain gained de facto control of Tanganyika a few years after the First World War. In 1964 Zanzibar and Tanganyika united to form the independent nation of Tanzania.

GETTING AROUND

Investment in better roads gives tourists

easier access Travelling when abroad can sometimes be difficult, but new road networks and improvements to infrastructure have made journeying in Tanzania easier than ever.

GETTING THERE

Image: Delbars - Shutterstock, Inc.

Tanzania is served by a range of international and domestic airlines at its 26 mainland airports. There are frequent direct and indirect flights to Julius Nyerere International Airport in Dar es Salaam by international airlines such as KLM, Emirates, Qatar Airways, Oman Air, Turkish Airlines, South African Airways, Ethiopian Airlines, Kenya Airways, Etihad, Swiss, Air Zimbabwe, FlyDubai and Rwanda Air. Domestically, Tanzania is predominantly served by Air Tanzania, Coastal, Precision Air, Auric Air and Fastjet.

| 14

If you’re driving to Tanzania, the main international road crossings are from Kenya, with the most used border crossing at Namanga, halfway between Nairobi and Arusha. Several companies run comfortable shuttle bus services between Nairobi in Kenya and Arusha and Moshi in

Tanzania. These are aimed at tourists who fly into Nairobi and plan to visit the game parks in Tanzania’s northern circuit from Arusha, or climb Mount Kilimanjaro from Moshi. Bus journeys take between five and six hours in either direction.

the newly developed Kigamboni suburb. About 60,000 people and 1,000 vehicles currently cross the Kigamboni creek each day by ferry. The new 680 metre bridge, which was financed by the National Social Security Fund (NSSF) at a cost of over US$ 143.5 million (TZS 288 billion), will have six lanes, thus improving travel times and reducing queues. The bridge is expected to promote the establishment of a new city in Kigamboni, which has the capacity to accommodate 450,000 residents, and to boost tourism in Dar es Salaam’s south beaches, an area that hosts a number of top tourist accommodation and recreational facilities. Construction started in September 2012 and the official opening is set for mid April.

INVESTMENTS Road travel is the most widely used form of transport in Tanzania. There are good road links within major cities and large towns as well as easy access to most national parks and reserves. Investment in infrastructure, particularly in the development of road networks, is the Tanzanian government’s top priority. At the end of 2015 the African Development Bank invested US$ 346 million to improve 500 km of roads across the country over the next five years, with many sectors already benefiting from the project, including tourism. Another investment is the new Kigamboni Bridge, which is set to improve business and settlement links between the bustling city centre of Dar es Salaam and

THE NORTHERN SAFARI CIRCUIT

Optimum game viewing in an

astounding setting The northern safari circuit is one of the most famous platforms in Africa for safaris and adventure experiences. If you’re looking for extraordinary game viewing, top accommodation in the bush and unforgettable memories, then the northern circuit is the place to go. With thousands of tourists arriving each year to witness the outstanding wildlife, this is a busy tourist destination throughout the year and one of Africa’s most popular holiday destinations.

UNFORGETTABLE ADVENTURE Even though the area receives a large number of visitors, Tanzania Tourist Board has taken steps to ensure that every visitor has a memorable trip by providing a safe safari experience and by building comfortable and affordable lodges all over the circuit.

| 20

From the breathtaking natural beauty of the Ngorongoro Crater and the immense figure of Mount Kilimanjaro to the endless plains of Serengeti National Park and the awe-inspiring great migration of wildebeest and zebra, the northern circuit is beyond compare when it comes to a full-on safari experience.

One of the most sought-after attractions in Tanzania is the great wildebeest migration. In what is regarded as one of the seven wonders of the modern world, more than 2 million wildebeest and other animals migrate each year from Serengeti to Maasai Mara in Kenya in search of greener lands and fresh vegetation. The great migration is also a hunting season for crocodiles and animals such as lions, leopards and hyenas. From June to October, the peak migration season, visitors can see the predators of the Serengeti feed themselves on an easy catch of wildebeest or zebra; while in the

dry season, wildlife enthusiasts can view other large animals as they gather near the waterholes and rivers.

BIG FIVE Famed for its vast array of game viewing options, the northern safari circuit is one of the few places in Africa where you can see all members of the Big Five – buffalo, elephant, leopard, lion and rhino – in one location. The circuit’s spectacular and unrivalled wildlife makes it the ideal destination for safari-goers as visitors can see everything from

common species like wildebeest, zebra and Thomson’s gazelle to rarer animals such as white rhino, black rhino and leopard. The northern circuit is also a haven for hundreds of species of birds, attracting a large number of birdwatchers.

GOLDEN OPPORTUNITY Tanzania’s only active volcano is located in the northern circuit. Ol Doinyo Lengai (‘Mountain of God’ in the Maasai language) stands alongside some of the highest mountains world, providing a golden opportunity for hikers in search of a challenge.

Wildebeest and zebra during The Great Migration

As the highest peak in Africa as well as the highest free-standing mountain in the world, Mount Kilimanjaro draws climbers and tourists from around the world. Although Mount Kili has one of the most accessible summits, visitors generally climb Mount Meru, an active stratovolcano, in order to prepare themselves. In addition to climbers, Mount Kilimanjaro is popular with wildlife trekkers owing to the lush vegetation on the way to the top. It is a haven for animals such as elephant, leopard, buffalo, the endangered Abbott’s duiker, antelope and primates.

A quieter, more natural

Popular safari options can often draw large crowds in the north, but if you’re looking for a safari that gives you room to spot animals and time to explore the whole game reserve, then the southern safari circuit is the place for you. These game reserves have a wilder and more natural feel, making each safari trip that much more memorable.

Visitors can go on a balloon safari to view the whole park and spot animals as they make their way through the lush vegetation of the game reserve. A walking safari is another interesting option at almost all the national parks in the southern circuit. In addition, game reserves such Mikumi, Selous and Saadani offer boat safaris that allow visitors to get a close-up view of marine mammals.

THE COASTAL CIRCUIT

RICH HISTORY

White sands, water sports and

wonderful history Visitors often use Dar es Salaam as a transit point before journeying to destinations such as Zanzibar or the northern safari circuit. However, the coastal city has many of its own tourist attractions. They include beautiful beaches as well as fivestar hotels and historical sites.

CITY HOT SPOTS One of Africa’s fastest-growing cities, Dar es Salaam is a great place to explore and to learn about Swahili culture. From sampling delicious street food and strolling in the heart of the city to experiencing the daily bustle of city life while shopping at Kariakoo Market – one of the largest and busiest of its kind – Dar es Salaam is certainly a place to be explored. Oyster Bay is an excellent place to try local snacks such as mohogo (cassava) with spicy kachumbari (salad) and mishkaki (skewered meat)

while sitting on the shore. For seafood lovers, the Kivokoni Fish Market sells fresh catches from the ocean daily at extremely reasonable prices.

IDYLLIC BEACHES

The coastal circuit also has an intriguing history. The area’s historical buildings and cultural items are evidence of the settlers, explorers and merchants who came via the coastal routes. Bagamoyo town was recently declared a World Heritage Site and has a history dating back to the 18th century. As a centre of the slave trade in the 19th century, Bagamoyo was regarded as one of the most important trading places in Africa. The merchants and traders who arrived from Arabia and India have made a lasting impact on the cultural history of the town. Bagamoyo, Pangani and Dar es Salaam offer a historical insight into this region and into the travellers, traders and explorers who travelled here from every part of the world and continue to do so.

After a challenging safari experience, what could be more refreshing than a dip in the clear Indian Ocean or a relaxing walk on the beach? With so many beautiful beaches and islands within easy reach of Dar es Salaam, that is never hard to arrange. The beaches of Tanzania are the perfect place to relax and unwind – or to experience a range of water sports such as scuba diving, snorkelling, kite surfing, wakeboarding, windsurfing and jet skiing. Dar es Salaam and its nearby beaches offer a nautical adventure while remaining close to the city. Some of the city’s best restaurants are located on the shoreline.

THE GREAT LAKES CIRCUIT

WILDLIFE

Lakeland

beauty and tranquillity Despite being one of the less visited tourist spots in Tanzania, the great lakes circuit offers plenty of unique experiences. It contains beautiful scenery, wonderful freshwater lakes – Victoria, Tanganyika and Malawi – and animals not seen elsewhere in Tanzania.

LAKE VICTORIA Lake Victoria is the largest lake in Africa with an area of 68,800 sq km, an average depth of 40 metres and a deepest point of 83 metres. With Mwanza located on its southern shore, the lake is an ideal place for freshwater fishing and boating. Mwanza is the country’s secondlargest city after Dar es Salaam, presenting an insight into life in a tranquil Tanzanian city as well as opportunities to enjoy the breathtaking scenery.

| 44

The circuit is inhabited by endangered species of chimpanzees that cannot be found in other areas of Tanzania. The lakes are home to huge populations of pink flamingo, stork, heron and other bird species, making it a perfect place for birdwatching. Game viewing is an exciting and unforgettable experience in this part of Tanzania. With most of the lakes situated close to national parks, it is easy to include them in your itinerary.

An good way to visit the great lakes circuit is by spending a night in Mwanza, taking a boat trip on the lake and then making your way to the northern circuit for a safari. In addition to Mwanza, there are several other lakeside towns that are worth a visit. The most notable is the Kagera region and its capital Bukoba. Kigoma, meanwhile, is a harbour on Lake Tanganyika, and has a direct rail link with Dar es Salaam. It’s possible to take a venerable lake vessel each week from Kigoma to Mpulungu in Zambia and another to Bujumbura in Burundi. A visit to Musoma should be form part of any lakeland travel itinerary.

ZANZIBAR AND THE ISLANDS

Spice up your perfect

island holiday Zanzibar, together with Pemba, Mafia and other smaller islands in the Zanzibar archipelago, are collectively known as the Spice Islands. Famous for the cultivation of cloves, nutmeg, cinnamon and black pepper, the islands have exported their spices around the world for hundreds of years and these products are still a major source of revenue. While Tanzania is famous for its amazing wildlife and abundant national parks, many visitors come to East Africa for the white sand beaches and clear blue waters of the Spice Islands. Ranked among the country’s most visited destinations, the Zanzibar archipelago is steeped in history and inhabited by the friendliest of people as well as offering a choice of luxurious accommodation.

HEAD TO THE BEACH Many visitors to Zanzibar will be drawn to its exotic shorelines. With

their idyllic Indian Ocean location, the islands have some of the most serene and peaceful beaches in the world. The calm beaches of the Zanzibar archipelago are ideal for nature lovers and holidaymakers looking to spend a quiet vacation away from the crowds. Moreover, guests can choose from a range of luxury international resorts and smaller lodges. The islands offer an excellent choice of water sports, from snorkelling in the sea grass meadows and diving among the extraordinary coral reefs to kayaking near the local fishing boats or going on a ‘seafari’. Alternatively, you could go dhow sailing, jet skiing, windsurfing, waterskiing, parasailing, kitesurfing or wakeboarding. Another popular tourist activity is dolphin sighting. Visitors can take a sailing trip out to sea with a chance to view and swim with the dolphins.

On a visit to Mafia Island you can swim with whale sharks as these gentle creatures visit the local waters from November to April each year. Whatever you choose to do, be sure to discover the marine wonders of the Indian Ocean.

GETTING THERE The popular island of Zanzibar is just a 15-minute flight from Dar es Salaam – or a two-hour trip by boat – while the lesserknown islands of Mafia and Pemba are just as easily accessible from Dar es Salaam by boat or charter flight.

EXPLORE TANZANIA 2017-18 – ZANZIBAR AND THE ISLANDS

As well as marine life, the islands are home to some remarkable land species. Zanzibar is known for its unique population of Zanzibar red colobus, one of Africa’s rarest monkey species, as well as the Zanzibar leopard and the recently discovered Zanzibar servaline genet. Meanwhile, Pemba is famous for the preservation of flying foxes under the auspices of the Kidike Environmental Conservation Club. Found only on Pemba, the flying fox is one of the world’s largest species of bat.

STONE TOWN As well as pristine seafronts, the islands are blessed with a unique culture and wonderful

architecture. Be sure to visit Stone Town, one of the most fascinating parts of Zanzibar. With its cobbled streets, framed doors and traditional buildings, Stone Town is full of beauty, history and mystery. As a Unesco World Heritage Site, it is the island’s hub of Swahili culture. The colourful history of the Zanzibari people can be traced in the many forts, ancient buildings and magnificent mosques of Stone Town – all just a 20-minute drive from the airport. Experience Zanzibar’s heritage by visiting historical buildings such as the Old Fort (Ngome Kongwe in Swahili), which was the first defensive structure built by Busaidi Omani Arabs in 1698. In British Colonial times it became a ladies’ tennis club in 1949; and today it is an amphitheatre for the Zanzibar International Film Festival.

ASILIA MATEMWE LODGE

Moreover, the good crop-growing qualities of these islands brought incomers from India, the Middle East and other parts of Africa. Because of this, Swahili culture underwent a series of refinements as it absorbed aspects of other cultures. The combination of these cultures can still be seen today in the islands’ architecture.
