Introduction

Smiling coast The Gambia is fast becoming one of the most sought-after winter sun destinations for European tourists. Its growing popularity can be attributed to a combination of endless sunshine, fabulous beaches, a unique culture and wonderful hospitality. Although The Gambia is the smallest country in mainland Africa, it has a dynamic tourism industry that is a surprise for many visitors, but a pleasant surprise. For, beyond the superfi cial image of a ‘sun, sea and sand’ destination, there is a hidden world waiting to be explored – one that is largely untouched by development.

Success The success of The Gambia’s tourism industry is a relatively recent devel-

4

opment. In fact, the fi rst tourists came only after the potential of the region was discovered by the Swedish investor and adventurer Bertil Harding in 1964. Within months of his visit, the fi rst package holidays were being off ered as an alternative to the tried and tested options in southern Spain and the Balearic Islands – and it was an immediate success. Today, this small nation draws more than 160,000 tourists each year and its range of hotel and resort accommodation is expanding all the time. Tourism development is a key policy of the national government, which has put in place a carefully defi ned strategy to move up to the next level in terms of accommodation as well as services.

One of the destination’s main advantages is ease of access from Europe. The Gambia is just six hours’ fl ying time from major European cities and has a similar time zone, so there is no jet lag. It is also one of the safest and friendliest places on the continent. For a taste of Africa without the long haul, The Gambia is the perfect choice.

Location The Gambia’s main asset is its river, from which the country derives its name. The country is shaped like a snake as it follows the course of the river some 300 miles inland. The Gambia is generally less than 40 km wide at any point and is surrounded on three sides by its much larger

neighbour Senegal. This bizarre setup is a legacy of the many years of colonial squabbling for the rich assets of the region. The Gambia is a small English-speaking enclave in a typically French-speaking region. The natural diversity of the country is immense. There is an abundance of crocodiles, dolphins and hippos in the Gambia River. The country is home to some 560 species of colourful birdlife and there is a proliferation of monkeys in most of the hotel gardens and forests. Apart from its capital, Banjul, and the areas developed for tourism, much of The Gambia is untouched. This provides a fascinating location for eco adventures, wildlife tours and cultural excursions. Many local companies off er a range of tours to eco parks, fi shing communities, local markets, traditional villages and wide-open beaches.

Hospitality The hospitality of the local people is legendary. Most seem genuinely pleased to welcome visitors. This hospitality is a crucial part of the hotels that belong to the Gambia Hotel Association. The 32 members featured in this guide off er not only a high level of service and facilities but also a degree of style that ensures visitors will want to come back, time after time.

GHA

Membership matters Representing all the major hotels in The Gambia, the Gambia Hotel Association (GHA) is a driving force within the country’s tourism industry. Its principal aim is to develop the tourism potential of The Gambia, mainly in collaboration with government agencies such as the Gambia Tourism Authority (GTA) and the Department of State for Tourism & Culture, but also many with other stakeholders. As a major player in the tourism sector, the GHA takes part in travel fairs and promotions as well as coordination of staff training. In recent years, the GHA has been working together with PUM, a Netherlandsbased organisation, to train staff of member hotels in such areas as customer care, food preparation, marketing and information technology. The association has a permanent secretariat located at the Golden Beach Hotel and provides administrative and institutional support for all its members.

The GHA was established more than 25 years ago. Over the years its membership has grown to the current level of 32 hotels. Member hotels are located in all the main tourist areas including Bakau, Banjul, Bijilo, Kotu and Senegambia.

Financial support The GHA also gives fi nancial support to the Gambia Hotel School, located at Kanifi ng, the only institution that off ers special training in tourism. This comes under the umbrella of the government. The excellent facilities provided by members of the GHA, situated mainly along the coast, off er the perfect base for a good holiday. Each GHA hotel off ers a consistent level of quality of accommodation, cuisine and service, all with a distinctive national and international touch. So, for guests who want to be sure of an enjoyable holiday, with memories that will last a lifetime, the best way to start is by looking at the GHA properties described in this guide.

Each property – covering the entire length of the tourism area from Banjul on the Gambia River to Brufut on the coast to the south – off ers a fabulous base from which to explore the country or just to relax on the beaches and soak up the tropical sunshine. The Gambia is a unique destination, with a unique people and a unique way of life. It is a unique experience.

5

Destination

Heart-warming hospitality As a tourist destination, The Gambia ticks all the right boxes. As well as generally cloudless skies and temperatures of over 30 degrees, it offers beautiful sandy beaches and heart-warming tropical hospitality. All this is available just an easy journey from Europe with no jet lag. The Gambia has built a reputation as an economical and culturally diverse alternative to Caribbean and Mediterranean beach-style holidays. Beyond this, however, the country has a great deal more to off er. In many ways it is an ideal tourist destination because it has something for everyone. From luxury hotels to rustic huts, from relaxing on the beach to exploring tropical jungles and from top-quality dining to traditional arts and crafts, The Gambia off ers a wealth of opportunities and possibilities.

Seasons The main tourist season is in the winter months – generally the driest

time of year, with day after day of uninterrupted sunshine. However, The Gambia is also a great place to visit in the summer. Although short and heavy showers occur regularly, the benefi ts of the green season far outweigh any minor inconvenience as the forests are transformed into a green oasis with an abundance of tropical fl owers.

Places to stay The main concentration of hotels is on or near the main Kombo Coastal Road that links Bakau in the north with Bijilo in the south. At the southern end of this area is the recently completed Sheraton Gambia Resort at Brufut, opposite the upmarket housing estate of Brufut Gardens. Further north, Bijilo is the next village, a quiet area with a few bars and restaurants and an uncrowded beach.

One of the most developed tourist centres is Kololi, which has a good choice of bars, restaurants and shops as well as a busy craft market. It can be quite lively in the evenings. Several of the larger resort hotels can be found in this area including the Coco Ocean, the Karaiba and the Senegambia, while the Dunes, Paradise Suites and Sarge’s Hotel are discreetly located back from the beach.

Kotu Stream The Kotu area is the most densely packed area for hotels. It is a fast developing area with several new restaurants and bars. It surrounds the Kotu Stream, famous for birdwatching and fi ne views over the mangroves. Kotu includes Sunset Beach, located beside the Kotu Stream, Luigi’s Complex, Bungalow Beach and the Kombo Beach. There are fewer hotels to the north, although the villages are generally more developed. In Bakau, the African Village Hotel stands on a hill with impressive ocean views. Bakau is a bustling town set in a network of roads with shops and roadside stalls.

6

Cape Point, at the mouth of the Gambia River, is another fast-developing area. The Ocean Bay Resort & Hotel is located here. Because this coastline faces the river mouth, these hotels have fi ne views across to northern Gambia and Senegal as well as a prime location beside one of the

best and safest beaches in The Gambia. Cape Point is generally a business district. It contains government and other buildings as well as bars, restaurants and nightclubs. Further to the east is the capital Banjul, with little to interest the tourist apart from the busy market, the National Museum and a few restaurants.

The river Away from the coast, the Gambia River is central to most activities. Running right through the heart of the country, the river is a focus for commerce and transport. Although the vast majority of Gambian hotels are located on or near one of the country’s fi ne beaches, there is a growing number of lodges and “eco

retreats” further inland, often situated on the banks of the river or its tributaries.

Reputation The Gambia is often seen as purely a beach resort and winter sun destination. But this fascinating country, with its culture, its people and its natural diversity, can off er much more to the traveller who wants to explore. Whatever the choice of activity, however, the GHA hotels featured in this guide are a perfect base from which to start.

7

Conferencing

Convivial conferences The Gambia’s famous hospitality makes it an ideal choice for those seeking a conference and meeting location with a flair for the exotic. Many of the hotels offer meeting facilities, all with the bonus of a tropical beach location for afterbusiness relaxation. Several new hotels with purposebuilt meeting facilities have opened in recent years, helping to boost The Gambia’s potential in this lucrative market. Most of these air conditioned venues are equipped with the latest technology. Facilities range from exclusive and intimate rooms for small groups of 10 to 20 people, through to mediumsized rooms for 60 to 70. Several of the larger hotels can accommodate meetings of 200 and more.

Congress The Gambia has been chosen to host the 35th annual congress of the Africa

8

Travel Association (ATA) in May 2010. This follows its successful hosting of the African Union Summit in 2006, while the country’s long-standing ties with the ATA go back to 1984 when the ninth ATA congress was also held in The Gambia. The four-day event will focus on a range of industry topics, including public-private sector partnerships, marketing and promotion, development of tourism infrastructure, tourism industry trends and social media. This hallmark international event will be attended by African tourism ministers and industry experts representing tourism boards, travel agencies, ground operators, airlines and hotels as well as the travel trade media. The congress will be hosted by the country’s two leading conference

hotels, The Sheraton Hotel Resort & Spa and the Kairaba Beach Hotel. There are various medium to large facilities, which off er inspirational venues for banquets, conferences, exhibitions and meetings. These include purpose-built international conference centres designed to accommodate close to 800 people, while there are several other hotel boardrooms with capacities of between 25 and 150 people. Almost all hotels have a wide choice of banqueting, conference, congress and meeting rooms of various sizes and shapes.

Development

Purposeful destiny The destiny of The Gambia’s tourism industry is not being left to chance. Through a carefully defined and executed master plan, The Gambia is being transformed into a worldclass tourist destination and business centre, all held together with a commitment to the ideals of responsible tourism practice. The principal driver of this is the Gambia Tourism Authority (GTA), set up in 2001 to develop, promote and regulate tourism in The Gambia in line with the National Vision 2020. The aim is to widen The Gambia’s appeal as a destination. Up to 35 per cent of tourists are repeat visitors, so the challenge is to off er more options, and a greater diversity of options, to win them back.

Objectives This objective plays a key role in the GTA’s master plan for tourism. By 2012 it is expected that a number of new four-star and fi ve-star hotels will have opened in the Tourism Development Area, providing about 3,000 additional beds and taking the total to some 10,000 beds. One of the key marketing objectives is to improve the quality of services and facilities. This will be achieved by:

• Adhering to the Responsible Tourism Policy • Competing on the richness and quality of the product rather than just on price • Encouraging the development and marketing of added value products • Targeting new and old markets • Promoting year-round tourism, especially in the ‘green season’ • Encouraging investors to fund upcountry and upriver tourism ventures • Reinforcing safety and security. The GTA recognises that the product is the whole country and its people in this ‘smiling coast’ of Africa. Apart from resorts off ering ‘sea, sand and sun’,

the primary attraction is the River Gambia. Easily navigable and generally safe, the river off ers a multitude of attractions and excursions – birdwatching, dolphin observing, sport fi shing and mangrove exploring – which can be exploited. This tiny African nation is fully able and prepared to compete with more established destinations. The country’s key assets – its convenient location, friendly people, natural beauty and wonderful climate – will continue to attract tourists, whether for sun and beach holidays or for the adventure of a lifetime.

History

Turbulent history One of the earliest visitors to what is now The Gambia was Hanno the Carthaginian as long ago as 470 BC. In more recent history, in the ninth and 10th centuries, there are written accounts of the region by Arab traders who had found their way to West Africa to exploit the enormous wealth of the Mali Empire. In the course of this trade, ivory, gold and eventually slaves were shipped back to the Middle East. The Mali Empire had a strong infl uence over many countries in West Africa. This was an educated and cultured society as well as a powerful empire with enormous riches. Nevertheless, trade routes were laid down and the area began to receive foreign settlers in a pattern of infl uence that is still evident today. The Songhai Empire assumed control in the 16th century but later faced invasion and continual looting from the forces of Portugal and Morocco. By the end of the 16th century, the region was under Portuguese control. In the years that followed there was a colonial scramble for the riches of the African continent. St Andrews Island, on the Gambia River, was colonised by the Latvian Duke of Courland. The British gained a foothold in 1661 when they captured the island and renamed it James Island. Meanwhile, the French had colonised Senegal. Up to the 18th century the region was plagued by wars between the two nations and local tribes. In 1738 The Gambia was ceded to Great Britain under the Treaty of Paris and in subsequent years was administered from several places

10

including Senegal and Sierra Leone. The administrative centre of the new country was Bathurst – later renamed Banjul – which was built in 1816 on an island at the mouth of the Gambia River as a military post to combat the slave trade. It is thought the slave trade to the Americas may have deprived the region of over 3 million people in addition to the untold numbers taken by Arab traders. The administrative centre, Banjul, became the nation’s capital in 1892. Although slavery had been abolished throughout the British Empire in 1807, it continued in The Gambia for many years. Fort James played a key role in combating this illicit trade by checking the river traffi c. The present borders were laid down in 1889 and The Gambia became a British Crown Colony. Full independence was achieved in 1965 and The Gambia became a republic in 1970.

Groundnuts Groundnuts, introduced by the Portuguese in the 16th century, are now The Gambia’s main export commodity as well as being used in many

popular Gambian dishes. The land and climate are ideally suited to this crop. The countryside, which is mostly fl at, is dry and arid in winter and green and lush in summer.

Early visitors to The Gambia ventured far up the Gambia River in search of legendary goldmines and ivory. Later, explorers such as Mungo Park traversed the river looking for Timbuktu and the sources of the Niger and the Nile.

of the 19th century, overzealous game hunting and ivory trading had robbed its forests and savannahs of much of the big game found in other parts of Africa.

Changes

However, the country’s often turbulent history has by no means diminished the cheerfulness of its people, who dress as brightly as tropical birds and sing their welcome to all.

Travellers today have a much easier journey, although a great deal has changed in The Gambia since the early pre-colonial days. By the end

11

Activities

Abundant attractions While relaxing in tropical sunshine by the pool or on the beach is often the main attraction for many visitors to The Gambia, for those looking to enhance their visit, there is a wide choice of activities. Most hotels have sports facilities such as table tennis, volleyball, tennis courts, croquet and water sports. It is also quite easy to hire a bicycle and go exploring, play a round of golf or there are many places to visit in the hotel districts such as bars, restaurants, casinos and craft markets. Tours and excursions – for a few hours, a day or even several days – can be organised by the hotels or through package

operators. There is an almost unlimited choice, from 4x4 adventures on dusty roads to relaxing river trips in a traditional pirogue to cultural excursions to see relics of the slave trade and of colonial times. Most of these sites are upriver at James Island, Juff ureh and Albreda.

Popular Popular choices include the Katchikally Crocodile Pool in Bakau, the bustling Banjul Market, Makasutu Cultural Forest, the Banjul Arch, Fort Bullen at Barra, Abuko Nature Reserve, Brikama Craft Market and Lamin Lodge. In the south lies The Gambia’s largest fi shing community at Tanjeh, where visitors can watch the day’s catch being unloaded from the colourful fi shing fl eet and sorted for processing or smoking in one of the enormous

curing sheds. A few miles further south are the beautiful deserted beaches at Sanyang – some of the fi nest in the country. A visit to the National Museum is a must. Through their fascinating collection of modern and ancient artefacts, the halls show the emergence of the modern-day Gambia. Exhibits range from Stone Age pottery to musical instruments, garments and relics of the country’s colonial past and, of course, the slave trade. The museum is run by the National Council for Arts & Culture, which also organises The Gambia’s many festivals, including the Roots International Festival. The river is central to any inland excursion. Even if not actually travelling on the river, it will probably have to be crossed at some point. For many years, the road system on the southern shore was superior, but following recent road improvements on the north bank, most journeys to the interior now start with a ferry crossing to Barra and then onward by road.

Abundance With its abundance of birdlife, The Gambia is a bird watcher’s paradise. To date, 560 species of birds have been identifi ed in The Gambia, which has six areas – totalling around 40,000 acres and protected by the Department of Parks & Wildlife – where most of the bird watching excursions go. Many tour operators and package holiday companies off er special bird watching excursions, often at optimum times of day for observing the feathered residents. Dedicated bird watching holidays are available, too, although numbers on these can be limited.

12

As well as the more common sandpipers, oystercatchers, redshanks and plovers along the beaches, the extensive mangrove swamps attract kingfi shers, eagles, parrots and herons. More colourful and interesting species to look out for include African fi sh eagles, red bishops, Senegal parrots and red checked cordonbleus. Protection of wildlife has been a priority in The Gambia since 1977 when the Wildlife Act came into force. This underlines the country’s commitment to its birdlife and the environment and ensures it will be there for future generations of visitors to enjoy.

Eco-tourism The country’s fi rst foray into wildlife conservation and protection was the Abuko Nature Reserve, established in 1968. A favourite destination for tourists, it includes a 3 km walk featuring

a vast array of birds and wildlife, including crocodiles. Other sites of interest are Lamin Lodge, a huge tree house with fi ne views over the Gambia River, Bijilo Forest Park and the Kotu Stream in the hotel district, Tanjeh Bird Reserve on the south coast, and numerous nature reserves along the river including Niumi National Park opposite Banjul, Kiang West National Park and Baobolong National Park, 100 km upriver, and the River Gambia National Park, 250 km upriver. Many consider Makasutu Culture Forest to be West Africa’s premier destination for eco tourism. Located next to the Mandina Bolong, this 1,000 acre reserve includes forests, savannah, mangroves and wetlands/salt fl ats. Its diverse eco system supports a wide variety of animal, plant and

bird life including monitor lizards and baboons. Bringing together a mix of eco tourism, luxury and exclusive accommodation beside the river and conservation, the culture forest benefi ts the local community and the environment as well providing visitors with a great day out.

13

Culture

Cultural crossroads A melting pot of various cultures, The Gambia is steeped in both colonial and African history and is a legacy of the struggle between European nations for power in West Africa. The country’s population of just 1.5 million is made up of eight ethnic groups along with some fairly large communities from neighbouring countries in West Africa. The result is a mix of the Francophone and Englishspeaking peoples in The Gambia and Senegal, with Senegambian integration blurring the borders between nations and families. Much of the region’s heritage can be traced to inter-tribal confl ict and coalition. Into this mix can be thrown ancient tribal ceremonies, musical

14

instruments and traditional dances. In addition, the region has been shaped and infl uenced by the slave trade. Today, the memory of those times has been revived through the Alex Haley novel ‘Roots’, which tells the story of Kunta Kinteh, taken as a slave from the village of Juff ureh, on the Gambia River.

Roots Trips to this village, the trading station of Albreda and the former slave fortress of James Island are popular excursions for tourists. In addition, the Roots International Festival, which commemorates the forced enslavement of Africans, is a magnet for descendants of slaves who come from across the world to share in their ancestral roots. The event is also a showcase for the cultural heritage of The Gambia.

Music The Gambia’s best known musical instruments are undoubtedly the drums, the balafon (an African xylophone), the kora (a 21-stringed harp) and the xalam (a four-stringed instrument). Among these traditional instruments, the most distinctive is the drum, which has played a major role in the culture of the region. There is a surprisingly wide range of types, with diff erent drum sounds being used for diff erent events. The incessant beating of the drums can be heard throughout The Gambia, and most hotels have at least one cultural night each week when local musicians entertain guests with dancing and music.

Africell

Gambian connections It is no exaggeration to say that Africell is a household name in The Gambia. It is the country’s largest mobile telecommunication provider. Most people who own mobile phones will come into contact with the company each day and many others will benefit from its widespread social development programmes. ‘Bringing people closer’ has been Africell’s slogan since it was founded. This policy has been fulfilled through a continuous programme of capital development and aggressive network expansion.

Since 2007 the company has seen exceptional growth. It now has over 650,000 subscribers, accounting for 69 per cent of market share in The Gambia. In addition, through its parent holding company, Lintel Holding, the Africell brand has over 750,000 subscribers in neighbouring Sierra Leone. The company plans to expand into other countries in the West African region.

Agenda Africell takes its corporate social responsibility very seriously and is involved in a wide social agenda. It is

a main driver of social development in The Gambia through sports, education and health programmes. Part of this involves football sponsorship. Africell sponsors the GFA League First Division Sait Matty football team. It also sponsors The Gambia’s national side and its under-17 football team, which won the African Cup in April 2009. Africell’s products include monthly packages, ideal for long-stay or regular visitors, as well as pre-paid packages, more suited to the occasional or business visitor.

Shopping

Happy shopping Souvenir hunters and shopaholics are spoilt for choice in The Gambia, which offers a plethora of handicraft stalls and markets throughout the tourism areas. Bargaining is a way of life for local people, who bring enthusiasm and good humour to every transaction. A typical sale will often involve an engaging conversation in which the goods appear to change hands as an afterthought. The biggest problem is choosing which of the many and varied souvenirs to take home. Most hotels will have their own outlets, with good-value fixed prices, while others will feature a travelling craft market once or twice a week.

In the villages and towns around the hotels visitors will find a host of stalls and larger markets offering every imaginable craft item and souvenir.

Handicrafts Of course, for a people used to making their own things, handicraft has become a major industry for Gambians. Skills have been handed down through the generations, with particular crafts

often originating from specific tribes. Most items for sale have their ancient counterparts in the nation’s lifestyle and culture, but today they are produced mainly for tourists. Wood carvings are especially popular. These items are often made from mahogany and stained with shoe polish. Other craft items include batik, drums, fabrics, jewellery, leatherwork, masks, pottery, woven goods and local paintings.

Craftsmen Markets can be found close to the hotels in Bakau, Kololi and Kotu, but to appreciate the true nature of Gambian craftsmen, visitors should head to the Brikama market, one of the largest in the country, where artisans can be seen making as well as selling a multitude of items. Wood carvings dominate the market stalls. They include animal figures, bowls, combs and drums. While the sales pitch can seem pushy, it is all done with a big Gambian smile.

17

Fashion

Flamboyant fashions Colourful and stylish fashions are everywhere in The Gambia. From small villages to the streets of Banjul, Gambians love to wear bright and flamboyant clothes. Most of the clothes seen in The Gambia are made from tie-dyed or ‘cuub’ cloth, a process of dyeing knitted or woven fabric, usually cotton, with bright colours to make patterns. ‘Cuub’ means tie-dye in Wolof, one of the country’s main tribal languages. The fabric is folded or tied before being dyed and this can result in some wonderful patterns and designs. In contrast, batik fabrics use a wax-resisting technique to create the patterns.

18

Printed cotton fabrics can be found all over The Gambia, with the largest assortment to be found in the markets of Banjul and Serrekunda. Batik designs can also be designed and made to order, although one should expect to pay a premium price for the best quality fabrics. A key aspect of the clothing is the pattern, with imaginative new designs appearing every year. Patterns come and go like fashions and all the best dressed ladies want to be seen in the design of the day. Today, most of the colours are synthetic and there are many patterns to

choose from. However, the traditional method uses plant colouring and a few examples of this are still being produced.

Tradition For big family events, Gambian women often wear the same patterns. These ‘asobi’ garments are made of the same fabric, although the design can vary slightly. Occasionally, men will also wear clothes of the same material.

Cuisine

Flavours galore One of the joys of travelling to any African nation is the range of culinary delights on offer – and The Gambia is no different. Today’s cuisine is a mix of the many cultural influences over centuries of colonialism, with the added allure of local flavours. Arabian, British, French and Portuguese influences are everywhere. The result is a fusion of ingredients and spices prepared in a unique way to produce a complex range of flavours.

Visitors can choose from a wide variety of restaurants in The Gambia, from beach bars to gourmet dining. They offer cooking styles from across the world as well as many local dishes.

For a true Gambian experience, try some of the following dishes:

• The Gambia also has a wide diversity of cereals and vegetables, especially the staple groundnut and cassava, which are used in many dishes. Freshly caught seafood is also readily available, including barracuda, ladyfish, lobster, prawns and snapper. And, of course, fruit is another key ingredient. An abundance of fresh and delicious fruit is available throughout the Gambia.

Fufu – usually made from starchy root vegetables such as cassava. Often served as an accompaniment to stews or soups

Tastes

• The secret of Gambian cooking is attention. Using the right amount of spices is essential for both colouring and taste. One of the main ingredients is meat, especially a range of cured and smoked hams.

• Benachin – a one-pot dish where anything goes – fish or meat and vegetables

Mbahal – prepared with groundnuts and smoked fish. Similar to risotto

Nyombeh nyebbeh – a very rich dish made with cassava and beans

Caldo – rice with steamed fish and delicious tangy lemon flavouring

Oyster stew – a ‘must try’ for any visitor to The Gambia

Pepeh soup – thick, spicy soup made from fish or meat on the bone

Yassa – made with chicken of fish with a tangy flavour of fresh lemons or limes. A big favourite.

Domoda – a stew made from peanut paste and either meat, beef or fish with lots of vegetables Fish balls – a Gambian favourite to be found everywhere. Excellent when prepared with proper ingredients
