Wind of change blows fair in tourism sector top international hotel brands such as Marriott, Wyndham, Radisson Blu, Kempinski and Lonrho. Some of these, such as Radisson and Kempinski, have shown interest in following the example of Hilton and InterContinental by investing in our country. In the past five years, the quantity and quality of physical infrastructure in Kenya have greatly improved, thanks mainly to enhanced public investment and a transformation in management practices. Notable improvements include the reconstruction and rehabilitation of roads; an expansion of facilities at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA); rehabilitation of the Kisumu and Malindi airstrips; and construction of an ultra-modern station in the Nairobi suburb of Syokimau for the new rail line that will connect the city with JKIA. We expect more infrastructure development as the country continues to implement its Vision 2030 economic blueprint, in which tourism is a key pillar.

Introduction

Bouncing back after a tough year for tourism nd now for the honest industry question at the end of 2012: has it been a good year for tourism? We are confronted with two ready answers, but only one is important enough to take the industry to where we envisage it going.

But difficult years are not happenings that discourage a resilient

change Thankfully, with the gazetting of the Tourism Bill 2011, business should improve because the Bill is set to change the management and structure of all institutions involved in tourism by providing the development, management, marketing and regulation of sustainable tourism and tourism-related activities and services. It has not been all gloom, however; there has been something to smile about. Examples include the entrance of Korean Air, which launched three non-stop flights per week

from Seoul; Ethiopian Air, now with direct flights to Mombasa; and lastly Gulf Air. These, coupled with the Kenya Airports Authority’s proposed expansion of Nairobi’s Jomo Kenyatta International Airport, the new modern international airport at Kisumu and the newly refurbished airstrips at Lamu and Diani, should greatly help the industry to spring back on its feet. It is only when this happens that we can embrace the other answer to the question posed at the beginning of this article – a much less significant answer.

The 200-room hotel, which is due to open in January 2013, is under the management of Kempinski Hotels (SA Villa Rosa), thus bringing an air of sophistication and pomp to Nairobi.

KENYAN COAST AND BEYOND

Industry discovers a silver lining any things went wrong for the Coast Region in 2011 and business was down 20 per cent from the previous year as a result. To make matters worse, the currency/debt crisis in Europe threw a spanner in the works. A number of key charter flight operators slimmed down trips to Kenya and this affected businesses.

M

As depressing as this may sound, there was a silver lining: the poor performance only spurred on the industry players to re-evaluate their business model.

leisure The business model in the Coast Region is fashioned around leisure. Yes, it has worked for as long as anyone can remember, but it has also shown its glaring weaknesses when faced with unfavourable happenings in the outside markets. If the dollar suffered, it would immediately reflect in the balance sheets of most hotels. If the euro wobbled, the

ripple effect would be the same.

instance, other uncontrollable factors like the weather always come into play. During the months of April to June, the rains make it impossible for hotels to do any substantial business since tourists prefer to come for the sun. What the industry needs is a good mix of leisure and business. This means that an investor who builds the largest conference facility in Mombasa can do it a lot of good.

good news There is a nugget of good news with the opening of a new resort in the form of Swahili Beach. Located in Diani, this new property features a unique blend of architectural influences from the East African coast, Arabia, India and Zanzibar to produce a new symbol of sophistication in hotel industry. What is special about Swahili Beach is that the design, borne from state-of-the-art technology, has been geared to ensuring minimum, short-term and long-term ecological impact. Although the Coast Region may have seen a slight fall in activity over the past year, in Kisumu a renaissance is happening. For a long

10

time, the stagnation of Kisumu has always been political, despite the presence of the world’s third-largest freshwater lake. But the tide is changing for this lakeshore town. The opening of Kisumu International Airport has changed the face of Kisumu and will continue to do so. Business opportunities are opening up as a result. There is also the Kisumu Impala Sanctuary, a prominent park in the Nyanza region that continues to attract many visitors. All this has been made possible by a strong organisation, Lake Victoria Tourism Circuit, whose council is making a serious effort to market Nyanza as a destination of note. The outlook for Nyanza has never looked brighter.

Conservation In effect, the KWS launched the conservation and management strategy for the black rhino in Kenya. The goal is to conserve at least 750 black rhinos by the end of 2016, achieving at least five per cent national growth rates and less than one per cent induced and diseaserelated deaths. The aim of this relocation was to minimise the human-elephant conflict, particularly in terms of crops raids, property destruction, human injuries

second phase This was the second phase of the project. The first phase was carried out in 2011 when 62 elephants were relocated from the region to the Masai Mara. This effort is part of the Kenya Wildlife Service’s national elephant conservation and management strategy plan, which provides a road map for conservation and management of elephants in Kenya over the next 10 years. It also seeks to reduce the number of incidents of conflict between humans and elephants. It is not only the elephant that is receiving attention in the parks, however; the rhino is also a cause of worry for conservationists. The African rhino is listed as critically endangered on the Red List of the
