and the civil aviation authority – as well as on further
incentives for charter carriers to increase capacity to Mombasa. If it comes about, then an upgrade of Malindi Airport, and the prospect of direct flights to Europe, will also do wonders for parts of the coast north of Kilifi. Away from Nairobi and the coast, Kenya is essentially a safari destination with world-class game parks and a range of other natural attractions that draw visitors from across the world. Then there is the first-rate cuisine, the exemplary service and the winning smiles of those in the hospitality sector. Much of this is thanks to the excellent Utalii College hotel schools with its campuses in Nairobi and Mombasa. Clearly, these are the envy of the region. It’s also the reason why highly trained Kenyan hotel staff can be found in key positions at high-end properties right around the world. As a matter of fact, there is no other destination quite like Kenya; and it’s why so many visitors come back time and time again.

United Nation’s Africa headquarters and the United States Embassy as well as to the upscale Village Market mall.
At the same time, Nairobi is recognised worldwide as the ‘go to’ location for regional exhibitions and high-profile gatherings. And organisers choose Nairobi because of the quality and diversity of its hotels and, of course, the sheer volume of rooms available for the hosting of major events. It’s this combination of overnighting guests en route to the wildlife reserves – an easy drive from the city – along with visiting business people and conference delegates that has driven the recent hotel construction boom in Nairobi. And it’s a trend that shows no sign of abating.

Westlands, which already boasts the Villa Rosa Kempinski on Chiromo Road, the much loved Southern Sun Mayfair, the striking Sankara, the long-established Jacaranda and the budget-focused PrideInn, has been joined by new names such as Tune Hotel and Golden Tulip. In contrast to 10 years ago, visitors can expect to find a choice of good-quality accommodation throughout the city. This is best illustrated by Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA): there are now three or four hotels on Mombasa Road, close to Kenya’s main international entry point.
Eclectic Clearly, this spate of new hotels – most of which, incidentally, are four- and five-star properties – has transformed Nairobi, providing visitors with a wonderfully eclectic range of accommodation that practically no other African city except, maybe, Cape Town can match. Recent forecasts indicate that by 2018 Nairobi will have around 20,000 guest-rooms – enough capacity to host the very largest global UN- or World Bank-sponsored conference. Nairobi already has some 20 five-star hotels, among the highest number anywhere in Africa.
In short, it’s easy to see why Nairobi is everyone’s favourite African city destination. So whether you are

Kilifi In between Watamu and the north coast of Mombasa is the small town of Kilifi. Popular with wealthy Kenyans who have built houses overlooking the beach and famous for its sheltered creek, Kilifi has the potential to be another Malindi, but for the time being it is limited to a handful of hotels and one or two decent restaurants. Mombasa is Kenya’s most mature resort area. It effectively starts at Mtwapa and extends southwards to the Nyali Bridge that links Mombasa to the mainland. There are plenty of hotels to choose from, catering for all tastes and budgets, from five-star to humble guesthouses. The city of Mombasa itself has few good hotels. This is a remarkable situation for a city with a population of around 1.3 million. But the beach is nearby and good
range of hotels to suit everyone.
Bid to woo international airlines Moves are under way to adopt a Dubai-style ‘open skies’ policy designed to attract international airlines to use Mombasa’s Moi International Airport. This would allow foreign carriers unrestricted access to Mombasa; and for local hoteliers it would lessen their reliance on charter flights to fill rooms. As at third quarter 2016, Ethiopian Airlines, RwandAir and Turkish Airlines were the only non-Kenyan scheduled airlines serving Mombasa. Such a change of policy could mean direct flights to Mombasa from Asia and the Middle East. In the past, carriers such as Emirates, Air Arabia, Qatar Airways and Etihad Airways have shown interest in serving Mombasa.
