Foreword W

e are back with yet another edition of the Kenya Association of Hotelkeepers & Caterers’ Hotel, Restaurant & Entertainment Guide and we are delighted to celebrate the fifth edition of this guide. Time surely does fly when you are having fun! The fun was interrupted at the beginning of last year with election-related violence that threatened the tourism industry with total collapse. However, the industry got back on its feet quite quickly and was able to recover some ground in the latter part of 2008 in certain areas. This year, we (the industry) are optimistic that we can continue with the recovery, particularly at the Coast Region, which carries a large capacity in terms of accommodation and other tourism investments.

POSITIVE NOTE On a positive note, Kenya has demonstrated that it is still the country of choice when it comes to tourism. In the capital, Nairobi, one five-star hotel opened its doors to the public in September 2008 and another is set to open early in 2009. In total, seven new quality hotels are set to open in the near future, while another major development is a golf estate within the northern part of the coast that will add value to the existing tourism offering.

Some more good news is that the Kenyan Olympic team posted the best results ever at any Olympic event with a medal haul that was the envy of many other countries. The closing ceremony was witnessed by an estimated 1 billion people around the world and all listened to the Kenyan National Anthem as local marathon hero Samuel Wanjiru stood at the podium to collect the final gold medal at the games. A phenomenal achievement. The hospitality fraternity and the entire tourism industry would like to take this opportunity to salute the Kenyan Olympic team and we look forward to the 2012 Games. Inside this fifth edition of the Association’s Hotel, Restaurant & Entertainment Guide you will find new members of the hospitality and entertainment “family” and an expanded variety of products and services to choose from. Have fun!

Welcome I

am pleased to introduce the 2009 edition of the Kenya Hotel & Restaurant Guide. Kenya Tourist Board is extremely pleased to see that all your accommodation needs are attended to adequately through this edition. Once again, this guide provides a comprehensive listing of its members’ establishments. These properties reflect Kenya’s diversity of accommodation, from Nairobi’s five-star city centre hotels to luxurious camps in faraway game parks and from beachside resorts to mountain lodges. The publication therefore confirms what we, as Kenyans, have always

known: that our country is one of the world’s great destinations, combining stunning scenery, fabulous wildlife, dazzling beaches and a warm smile from friendly people. Our mouth-watering cuisines and rich cultures will leave you, the guest, wanting more. Our beautiful destination comprises 42 distinct ethnic communities, many with their own language, traditions and customs, but who come together as Kenyans. So I would like to say: Karibu Kenya! (Welcome to Kenya!)

African hospitality at its best I

t will be considered something of an annus horribilis for Kenya’s hospitality industry as the post-election unrest of early 2008 hit arrival numbers and impacted upon future bookings. The fact that no tourist was harmed during the disturbances and the fact that almost all of the clashes took place well away from Kenya’s top attractions, seemed to count for little when the world’s media covered the situation. As a result, the local tourist industry spent the rest of 2008 playing catch-up as hoteliers and safari operators tried to win back business.

So what made Kenya attractive in 2007 will again be a draw in 2009 – that is, a varied destination that has few equals. In sum, Kenya has over 60 game parks and reserves teeming with wildlife and these are dotted with rather agreeable camps and lodges; a coastline that has some of the world’s best beaches and increasingly upmarket accommodation as well as a capital city that boasts a

Shooting wildlife

Good Prospects The good news is that slowly and steadily visitors have returned and prospects for 2009 look good – even against the backdrop of an uncertain world economy. Many property owners used the unplanned quiet period during the first half of 2008 to upgrade facilities and, as such, Kenya’s hospitality sector has emerged with a better overall product.

9

KAHC is made of over 150 members from across the entire accommodation spectrum of hotels, lodges and camps and also claims a selection of restaurants and, more recently, a vast swath of Kenya’s entertainment industry have become linked with the Association.

pulsating nightlife and a range of other attractions. ur lo co Added to which, al oc L the warmth of the Kenya welcome, the level of service and the broad smiles that can be found even among those that are most disadvantaged all makes first-time visitors vow to return. In many ways, visiting Kenya is a unique experience and one made all the more enjoyable and rewarding by the high standards set by the members of the Kenya Association of Hotelkeepers & Caterers (KAHC) – an organisation that has been representing the local hospitality sector for over 60 years.

New properties are opening all of the time – especially in Nairobi, where additional bed capacity is much needed as the city continues (due to its central location and excellent air links) to be a popular venue for major international conferences that quickly fill rooms. The number of camps and lodges is also on the rise and many of these are aimed at the top end of the market. Down at the coast, it has been more a question of refurbishing and upgrading existing properties, although some new hotels have opened, catering for a spread of different sectors.

Marketing At its heart, however, Kenya is a safari destination and the Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS) has been making strenuous efforts to streamline and enhance the marketing of the many parks and reserves that fall under its jurisdiction. KWS has also worked to differentiate these parks for marketing purposes so that these are no longer viewed as something homogenous but each to be visited for a reason or to view a unique animal or bird.

11

Generally speaking, animal numbers are on the rise throughout Kenya and such is the confidence in the sector that species such as the endangered black rhino are, for the first time, being released into unfenced parks.

Improving situation In terms of visiting these parks, which are spread pretty much throughout Kenya, then transportation is the key. In essence there are two choices: fly or be driven. Now the quality (if not the extent) of Kenya’s road system is improving, but many still prefer the convenience of flying directly to the lodge from Nairobi’s Wilson Airport rather than enduring a lengthy minibus transfer. And, for the most part, the same is true from the coast.

Aberdare Safari Hotels A

berdare Safari Hotels are all steeped in history, ambience and unparalled closeness to nature. From Treetops with its fairytale association with the British Royal Family, to Outspan’s serene beauty that enchanted the founder of the Scouting Movement, Lord Baden-Powell, to Shimba, located in the heart of the only remaining coast rainforest in East Africa and where the rare and endangered sable antelope can be viewed, Aberdare Safari Hotels promises and experience to remember.

Treetops The legendary Treetops, where Princess Elizabeth woke up one morning as Queen of England, is currently engaged in a conservation initiative dubbed Return to the Bush in conjunction with the Kenya Wildlife Service. This four-year project began

in May 2007 and involves rehabilitation of 125 hectares of Aberdare National Park. Visitors to Treetops and the surrounding flora and fauna will benefit tremendously from this initiative. So will four million residents of Kenya’s capital city who depend on the area’s water catchment. The 50-room game-viewing lodge offers comfortable accommodation with magnificent view of Mount Kenya and overlooks two waterholes, excellent for game viewing.

Shimba

Outspan

Immerse yourself in nature at Shimba, tucked away in the serene coast rainforest in the Shimba National Reserve. Explore the forest on foot, have a refreshing dip at the Sheldrick Falls and watch spectacular African sunsets behind the Usambara mountains.

Set in beautiful, lush 45-acre rolling gardens, this country hotel abounds with recreational activities. You could squeeze in a visit to the Paxtu cottage, where Lord Baden-Powell and his wife lived, tour a coffee farm, experience a game drive in the Aberdare National Park or Solio Ranch, enjoy a nature walk in the expansive grounds, or simply revel the afternoon away with Gikuyu dancing – and cap it all with a round of golf at the neighbouring Nyeri Golf Club.

Shimba’s culinary delights include the bush breakfast, complete with nature walk, and Lishe, the authentic African lunch experience, savoured as the colourful traditional Mijikenda dancers go through their paces. Shimba accommodates 65 people in comfort and is only a 45-minute drive from Mombasa.

Located in the heart of a dense forest in the Aberdare National Park, overlooking two waterholes and with views of Mount Kenya, the famous Treetops began in 1932 as a humble two-room dwelling supported by a wild fig tree.

Shompole is a luxury lodge with six spacious villas located on the edge of the Great Rift Valley, with spectacular views. It was the first lodge to be built by The Art of Ventures group. The lodge has a beautiful design, artfully combining the textures and materials of the local group ranch with the relaxing properties of flowing water and cool pools in each room. The rooms are designed with undulating white walls and multiple textures of natural quartz rock, bulrush thatch and smooth figwood. The camp owes its existence to the Maasai of Shompole Group Ranch, partners in this project, who lend their enthusiasm and culture to this new form of eco tourism. While the camp itself provides guests with an opportunity to relax, the surrounding area offers a range of activities including walking, canoeing, mountain biking, day and night game drives, bush dinners and breakfasts, and bird-watching. Wildlife seen in the area includes lion, leopard, aardwolf, striped hyena, eland, giraffe and bat-eared fox as well as flamingo on Lake Natron.

Tel: +254 (0)20 216 940 Fax: +254 (0)20 216 796 Email: kenya.reservations@fairmont.com www.fairmont.com At the heart of one of Kenya’s greatest national parks, The Ark provides a perfect vantage point to sit and quietly contemplate the beauty of its surroundings. Its biblical name is reflected in its wooden structure, accessible only via a drawbridge and offering cabin-style rooms located on different decks. The lodge overlooks the Yasabara saltlick waterhole – a natural magnet for local wildlife. The intimate dining room atmosphere is the culinary heart of The Ark, serving up a hearty menu of local and international favourites. Enhancing activities are ‘up-close’ and invigorating walking safaris, game drives, hang gliding and organised picnic lunches.

But in 1952 Treetops gained overnight renown as the place where Princess Elizabeth was staying when she learned of the death of her father, King George VI. Since then, for many, no visit to Kenya would be complete without experiencing the Treetops adventure. Treetops is currently involved in the Restore the Bush initiative to rehabilitate 125 hectares of Aberdare National Park. The 50-room Treetops offers comfortable beds in either a single or twin room with plentiful shared bathroom facilities. Two suites with their own bathrooms are also available. From the observation lounges, guests can view and photograph an exciting range of wildlife including rhino, elephant, bushbuck and even lion. Guests can arrange to be woken at night by the professional hunter when one of the ‘big five’ is in view and also book game drives into the Salient in 4x4 vehicles.

68

From the comfort of the lodge itself, it is possible to view game ambling to and from two nearby waterholes throughout the day, with a vast canopy of billowing clouds scudding across the African sky above. There is a special hide for camera enthusiasts, enabling photographers to take close-up images of game animals that are quite oblivious to human presence. An underground tunnel allows visitors to view the game at close quarters during the day or night. There are 52 en-suite rooms, two restaurants, two bars and a stunning rock swimming pool. Voi Safari Lodge is located in the Tsavo East National Park about two and a half hours’ drive or 165 km from Mombasa.
