Tourism in Kenya is currently at an all-time high with 2018 seeing the number of international tourists topping two million for the first time in the country’s history. As a result, Kenya is now the third-largest tourism economy in sub-Saharan Africa and catching up with South Africa and Nigeria ahead. The country is far from resting on its laurels, however. The Kenyan government has a long-term plan in place that aims to increase the number of tourists to 3.5 million by 2022 and KAHC is playing its part in making the country’s hospitality globally competitive. Our membership has been boosted by a number of new hotels opening up in Nairobi such as the Hilton Garden Inn and Four Points Sheraton and the capital will also get a new Radisson Blu Hotel, the Nairobi Arboretum, in October. The addition of these KAHCapproved global brand hotels is boosting the recognition of Kenya in international markets and is helping the country build on its success with more highyield tourists. On the catering side of our representation, the increasing number of flights being handled by Jomo Kenyatta International Airport has also seen the arrival of new KAHC member LSG Sky Chefs to provide an inflight catering facility.

Tapping into tourism diversity It is no coincidence that 2018’s record-breaking year for international visitors to Kenya coincided with our toursim transformational agenda. Among our key deliverables, our diversity in product and experiences has taken into account the growing desire of travellers to enrich their leisure time with memorable experiences We continue to increase awareness of the country beyond the justifiably world-renowned trio of wildlife-packed national parks, pristine coastal resorts and Africa’s second-highest mountain, Mount Kenya. There are so many more attractions spread across the entire country that can also become signature tourist experiences. As just a taste of what is on offer, visitors can go whitewater rafting on the Sagana river; take a sunset yoga session on the rooftop platform of a treehouse in Watamu; join in the harvest and a tasting session at one of the many tea plantations in Western Kenya; soar over the Rift Valley in a hot air balloon; join in the high attitude training of Kenya’s top distance runners in Eldoret and hiking with Maasai guides among the sacred Loita Forest.

We hope tour operators will be able to braid such attractions together in creating bespoke Kenyan adventures that bring in even more tourists and share tourism revenue and investment in all corners of the country. Continued government support on infrastructure, connectivity and working closely with the private sector has been a boost to our tourism transformational agenda. Travelling safely and quickly between tourist attractions is now safer and quicker than ever before, owing to infrastructure development on airports, railways and roads. The hospitality industry is also playing a huge part with the development of new hotels catering for the increases in the number of domestic and international visitors. Many of these hotels are set up with a mission to involve themselves in the local community and offer support in sustaining the environment and the ways of its people. The current traveller is eco-tourist enthusiast, they want to visit relatively undisturbed natural areas and the hotels can link them with local conservation projects and involve them in community efforts to live sustainable lives within the fragile environment. Adding these experiences to the tapestry of Kenya’s attractions will encourage travellers to visit more of the country and stay longer. Introduction

The many faces of beauty in Kenya Magical Kenya is a reminder that beauty has many faces. The fairy-tale feel of the cloud forests of Mount Kenya; a school of dolphins arcing out of the brightest blue waters off the coast of Lamu; the alchemy of a sunset over Lake Turkana turning the alkaline waters to shimmering gold; an alpha male lion surveying the scene as sunrise reveals his savannah hunting ground; and following elephant trails that wind through Ragia Forest before revealing a cataract of crystalline water falling from the rocks above. It’s a multifaceted beauty that now has more beholders than ever. In 2018 Kenya attracted over 2 million international visitors for the first time in its history. The figures come from the latest research by the World Travel and Tourism Council (WTTC), which also revealed that the same year saw tourism in the country grow by 5.6 per cent, well above the global average of 3.9 per cent and the average in sub-Saharan Africa of 3.3 per cent. This makes Kenya the third-largest tourism economy in sub-Saharan Africa after South Africa and Nigeria, both of which grew by substantially less than Kenya in 2018. Najib Balala, the Cabinet Secretary for Tourism & Wildlife, believes the country can build on this success. “We are optimistic about the future,” he says. “Our objective is by 2022 to have 3.5 million arrivals, attracted by the country being safe, secure and interesting and attractive to international and local visitors.” Part of the attraction for visitors is that they come into contact with a Kenyan population that is invested in the tourism industry – it contributes 1.1 million jobs to the

Kenyan economy, according to WTTC figures – and works to maintain and market the pristine natural environments and cultural diversity of its communities that are such a big draw for tourists. Ecotourism has taken off in recent years and there are plenty of hotels, lodges and community-run conservation schemes that ensure visitors leave no footprint beyond their own in the sand or the savannah and preserve Kenya’s attractions for future generations. These visitors come from far and wide. The award-winning national carrier, Kenya Airways, added direct flights from the United States in 2018 to its already impressive network

of destinations, which includes other large inbound international markets such as China, India, Germany and the UK as well as 44 countries in Africa. Kenya has introduced measures to make travel easier for these visitors, ensuring a smooth transition on arrival for qualifying passengers through the introduction of an e-visa system.

CONNECTIVITY The efficiencies continue with the countryâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s heavily invested-in transport infrastructure, assuring safe, secure and fast accessibility and connectivity for visitors to get to their business, beach or safari destination once they touch down. A major road rehabilitation programme has been established, with major highways improving transport links between Kenya and its East African neighbours, Tanzania and South Sudan. Work is scheduled to begin soon on the Nairobi-Mombasa Expressway, which will cut hours off the journey time between the two cities. Tourists can already travel between the capital and the coast at 120 km/h courtesy of the Madaraka Express after the fast rail route was opened in 2017. In just over four hours from Nairobi, passengers can get to Mombasa, gateway to a myriad beach resorts, and to Voi, which is within easy reach of the Tsavo East and West National Parks.

Such fluid connectivity enables businesses and conference organisers to co-ordinate major MICE events across the country, attracting delegates from around the world. There are the facilities here to host events big and small, from Nairobiâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s flagship Kenyatta International Convention Centre to an ever-growing number of hotels and lodges with world-class conference facilities. The country is also a playground for delegates, with tranquil beach escapes to wind down once the work is done, safari adventures to ensure the event is never forgotten and ideal team-building excursions such as white water rafting and mountain biking. The rising number of globally known brand-name hotels is boosting the recognition of Kenya in international markets and is a magnet to more high-yield tourists. A 2019 report by the Hotel Chain Development Pipelines in Africa shows that Kenya has 27 hotels in various stages of development compared with 20 in 2018. They include global brands such as Best Western, which has seven hotels being prepared in Kenya, and Marriott International, which has three, with Accor, CityBlue, Hyatt, Radisson, Rotana, Sarovar and Swiss International also set to increase their presence in the country. The continuing growth in capacity of the hospitality sector means that even more visitors can experience their own unforgettable view of the manifold beauty of Kenya.

Disney chooses Kenya

Land of the Lion King The computer-animated animals of Disney’s ‘The Lion King’ remake may be incredibly lifelike, but there’s nothing quite like seeing a majestic lion in its natural habitat. So where better to see these symbols of Africa – and the rest of the blockbuster’s majestic wildlife – than amid the vast landscapes of Kenya, the country that inspired the Pride Lands of the film. Safari visitors to the country have a huge part to play in protecting the circle of life here and ensuring these magnificent beasts prowl the plains here for many years to come. In the early 1990s a creative team from Disney travelled to Hell’s Gate National Park in Kenya to study the landscape and the behaviour patterns of animals found amid its dramatic fissures in the rocky outcrops of the Rift Valley. This research helped the team finesse a tale about the adventures of an exiled lion cub and his efforts to reclaim his birthright to lead his pride. The result was ‘The Lion King’, released in 1994, which went on to become one of the biggest-selling animated cinematic releases of all time. From its iconic first scene, in which a giant red sun rises over the Masai Mara, to its terrifying depiction of the great wildebeest migration, it is Kenya that fills the screen. The film is now celebrating its 25th anniversary and to mark the milestone Disney is releasing a computeranimated remake with an all-new A-list cast, including singing superstar Beyoncé Knowles-Carter and musician, actor and filmmaker Donald Glover.

Once again, Kenya is the inspiration. The new film’s director, Jon Favreau, sent key members of his production team on a two-week safari with Asilia Africa – whose pro-guide and camp manager Roelof Schutte showed them a range of locations, including the Aberdares, Lake Magadi, Mount Kenya and the Masai Mara – to find locales that could be recreated for key scenes in the film. They returned with 12 terabytes of images – that’s the data equivalent of 5,280 million single-spaced typewritten pages or the memory capacity of nine and a half human brains. Using the same state-of-the-art digital technology that made Disney’s remake of its 1967 classic, ‘The Jungle Book’, so lifelike, these images were turned into a dazzling virtual world that could be manipulated to provide the perfect backdrop to the animated action. ‘The Lion King’ is a love-letter to Kenya with its vast landscapes, skies and textures brought to magical life. The film also parades the magnificent animals that call this region home – among them, of course, the land’s ultimate predator, the lion. This brave, strong and beautiful creature has long held a fascination over the human psyche. Kenyans have lived with lions for centuries. The animal is so inextricably linked to its national strength that it is represented – two lions holding spears – on the nation’s coat of arms. The majority of the world’s wild lions are here and in neighbouring Tanzania. Kenya is the true home of safari and the wide-open savannah plains of national reserves such as the Masai Mara National Reserve make for excellent viewing of large prides that are accustomed to tourist vehicles. However, Africa’s lion numbers have

fallen by more than 40 per cent over the past three generations according to the World Wildlife Fund and, unthinkably, the powerful animal, which has no natural predators, is now officially classified as ‘vulnerable’ by the International Union for Conservation of Nature. Kenya has also seen its lion population dwindle. The government-run Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS) estimates there are just 2,000 lions left in the country. In 2002 the estimate was 2,749. Reasons for such a sharp decline include poaching, loss of habitat and conflict with pastoralists who have invaded the national parks with their cattle and see the raptors as a threat to their livestock.

STRATEGY The KWS, which is responsible for the welfare of all wildlife in Kenya, has a conservation and management strategy in place to reverse the trend that includes securing the lions’ habitats across the 22 national parks, 28 national reserves and five national sanctuaries it oversees. Disney is making its own contribution to the conservation effort. In the 25 years since the release of the original ‘The Lion King’, Africa has lost close to half its lions. With the remake’s appeal to a new young audience, it should help build a lion-loving new generation on whose shoulders the survival of the species will rest. To set the ball rolling, the entertainment giant launched a global conservation campaign, Protect The Pride, to raise awareness of the crisis facing lions and other wildlife across Africa. It also donated more than US$ 1.5 million to the Wildlife

Disney chooses Kenya Lions: the roar facts A lion’s roar can be heard five miles (8 km) away. Life expectancy for male lions is short. When they reach two years old they are often cast out by the pride and must fend for themselves. Twelve years is a good age for a pride male. A lion can run at 50 mph (80 kph) over short distances. They do like to conserve their energy, though. They spend up to 20 hours of the day at rest. A lion may go hungry for a week, then put away up to 100 lb of meat at once. Lions can mate up to 100 times a day, but the act itself only takes a few seconds. Every lion can be identified by the unique pattern of whisker spots on each side of its face. Conservation Network (WCN) Lion Recovery Fund, supporting its mission to double the number of lions in Africa, bringing back the half we have lost. The WCN believes this grand aim is achievable and the continent’s protected areas could support a population of lions three to four times its current total. The KWS is onboard in its mission to “save the last great species and places on earth for humanity” and knows that, in addition to its tireless efforts, the impact of the tourist industry is crucial in achieving a flourishing lion population. Over 70 per cent of all foreign tourists to Kenya rank wildlife as its primary attraction and the KWS works to ensure the nature tourism options available to them contribute positively to the environment. Complementing its national parks and reserves, Kenya has a growing number of conservancies – more than 160 and covering 10.6 million acres – that are a joint venture between enlightened Maasai landowners and safari companies who manage the land for the benefit of the wildlife and support the government’s conservation efforts. Domestic and international visitors to the areas conserved by these responsible tourism operators know they are getting first-rate access to the wild denizens of Kenya as well as doing their bit to ensure a healthy future for these wonderful animals.

The release of ‘The Lion King’ remake has raised the tourism profile of Kenya and many tour operators are making best use of the connection with filmthemed tours for animal lovers. The Safari Collection (thesafaricollection.com) is making the most of its luxury lodges in Samburu, Laikipia and the Masai Mara to offer an eight-day safari led by photographer Robert Carr-Hartley, who acted as guide to animators when they were creating the 1994 original. He will take you to many of the sites that inspired that film and there will also be a chance to meet the Ewaso Lion Warriors and learn how to track and identify lions as part of a hugely successful conservation project. Whether you’re following a tour operator’s itinerary or plotting your own ‘Lion King’ themed safari adventure, here are the sites to head for that inspired a film so good they made it twice.

PRIDE ROCK It may not have impressed wisecracking meerkat Timon in the film – “How can a rock be proud? It’s a rock” – but the scene when mandrill shaman Rafiki stands atop Pride Rock, holding the newborn Simba up for the whole savannah to see as Elton John belts out the last few bars of ‘Circle of Life’ is iconic. While there is no rock formation in Kenya that exactly resembles Pride Rock, it was modelled after many different areas in the country. These included the enormous sculptural red gneiss blocks of the Ndoto Mountains, just west of the Losai National Reserve in northern Kenya, as well as the rock formations of the Chyulu Hills in the south.

THE DESERT

While staying at Asilia Africa’s Rekero Camp – which from late December to March is the perfect spot to watch thousands of wildebeest thunder across the River Talek as part of the great migration – the Disney production team also got inspiration for the look of the lions’ stalking grounds in the film. This part of the Masai Mara, in the south-west of the country not far from the border with Tanzania, offers a panorama of bush land and vast savannahs peppered with acacia trees providing parasol-like shade. The team grabbed the look for Pride Lands.

The team ventured into Kenya’s hot, harsh and desolately beautiful north-west corner to find inspiration for the sun-scorched, arid lands you see Simba crossing between the Pride Lands and the Cloud Forest. They found it in the area around Lake Turkana – the world’s largest permanent desert lake and now a Unesco World Heritage Site.

CLOUD FOREST In creating a world very different from Pride Rock for the banished Simba to live with the ‘Hakuna Matata’ bickering buddies of Pumba and Timon, the Disney team looked to Mount Kenya with its rugged glacier-clad summits and forested middle slopes. A stay at Serena Mountain Lodge, set amid the dense rainforest and with views of the mountain, was inspirational, as were the moors of Aberdare National Park, which provided ideas for the surroundings of the ascent to the Cloud Forest.

THE WATERFALL The setting where lioness Nala re-enters Simba’s life took its inspiration from the Karuru Falls. The cascade plunges 273 metres amid the verdant woodland of Aberdare National Park, making it the highest waterfall in Kenya. It’s a suitably romantic setting for the reunion of the lovelorn lions.

WATERING HOLE To help the creative team conceive of the scene where the animals gather for some much-needed hydration, they visited Buffalo Springs Shaba Reserve in northern Kenya. Here, the cool waters of the springs, which give the reserve its name, are an oasis amid the semi-arid land here and provide a drink as well as lush vegetation to fortify native wildebeest and impalas.

Africa’s direct route to China China Southern Airlines launched its Guangzhou-Nairobi-Guangzhou direct flights on 15 August 2015 in order to build a traffic between China and Africa.

Chinese regions as well as North-east Asia, South-east Asia, Oceania and North America, thereby offering serving 40 countries and more than 190 destination worldwide.

As the largest player in both China and Asia in terms of fleet size, route network and annual passenger volume, China Southern’s launch of its Guangzhou-Nairobi service is a bold step towards implementing China’s One-BeltOne-Road Initiative.

KAKAMEGA FOREST The west provides its own safari thrills in this forest reserve – thought to be the only remaining tract of the GuineaCongolian tropical rainforest that once stretched across Central and East Africa – but on an intimate level with many trails to explore on foot rather than cramped in a caravan of 4x4s. Life here is abundant. The forest is home to more than 300 bird species, 400 species of butterfly and seven species of primate, including the very rare Brazza’s monkey. Also to be found are chameleons, bush bucks, aardvarks, porcupines and the giant forest squirrel, whose booming call even makes itself heard above the nocturnal cacophony here of frogs and night birds.

Getting there: road access to Kakamega is via Kakamega town, easily accessible from Kisumu by bus/ matatu. You’ll need your own transport, or to be part of a safari, to get to the forest. Go West to find hidden treasures of Kenya

SAIWA SWAMP Another haven for nature lovers, this tropical wetland is the sanctuary of the sitatunga antelope. These amazing semi-aquatic creatures, which have long-splayed hooves making them clumsy and vulnerable on firm terrain, but well-adapted to walking through muddy swampland, relish this habitat. The wetlands are also home to a rich variety of birds, such as the lesser jacana, grey heron and the African black duck. Getting there: Saiwa Swamp National Park is 22 km from Kitale town. At Kipsaina junction, a 5 km dirt road leads to Saiwa gate, the only park entrance. The park is also served by the Kitale airstrip, 27 km away.

RUMA NATIONAL PARK The park lies in the lush Lambwe River Valley close to the shores of Lake Victoria and sheltered by the surrounding Kanyamwa Escarpment and Ruri Hills. The protected area is the only place on earth to harbour the indigenous roan antelope in the wild. Around 40 of these creatures with their horse-like build remain is known as The Last Retreat of the Roan Antelope, with its population of 40 all

Getting there: Ruma National Park is 140 from the city of Kisumu. Follow signs to Homa Bay, then Rongo and Mirogi. At Mirogi follow signs to the park and enter at Kamato gate.

MOUNT ELGON Where the mist-shrouded hills of western Kenya meet the Ugandan border towers Mount Elgon, an extinct volcano which is East Africa’s fourth highest mountain and contains a crater covering more than 40 km at the top. Despite such intimidating stats, climbing the mountain is very achievable, with two main trailheads leading to the top. There’s plenty to take in on the way up with dense forest and bamboo belts teeming with birdlife as well as black and white colobus monkeys giving way to heath and moorland and then labyrinthine caves, cascaded by waterfalls. If you are particularly observant you may spot buffalo, duiker and hyena and, unlike most of East Africa’s other mighty peaks, you’re more likely to catch sight of an elusive leopard that you are many fellow hikers. Getting there: Routes from Kitale and Eldoret lead by dirt road to Mount Elgon Lodge and Chorlim gate. Chorlim gate is the main gate which also leads to the park headquarters.

KERICHO Time spent in Kericho is as soothing as a steaming cup of the tea it is famous for producing. The hills here on the western edge of the Rift Valley Province are a tapestry of tea plantations and the pristine, friendly town centre mirrors this manicured order. Even the cool climate contributes to the tranquillity with close-to-daily rain showers keeping the lime-green landscape in a breeding frenzy. Trips to various tea plantations in the area can be organised to learn about the tea-producing process, see the pickers at work and, of course, taste some of the delicious results. Other verdant attractions include the nearby Arboretum, which is popular with picnickers and colobus, vervet and red-tailed monkeys. Getting there: Kericho is about a 90-minute drive from Kisumu via the Busia and Nairobi roads.

ELDORET

Kisumu may be the third largest city in Kenya, but it has little of the rush and tumult of the metropolitan Nairobi and Mombasa. As the world’s first UN Millennium City, the place has seen plenty of investment that has revived its fortunes as a port town – it’s located on the shores of Lake Victoria – and increased tourist numbers, but it remains a laidback and low-key experience. Its lakeside locale offers plenty of boating trips, including fishing adventures with villagers in nearby Dunga and Hippo Point, glassbottomed boat rides from Kisumu and Kiboko Bay beach resorts and visits to the wildlife rich Ndele Island National Park. More animal adventures are to be had at the Kisumu Impala Sanctuary, which as well as its namesake antelope, hosts cheetahs, giraffes, buffalos and monkeys. The city also has its own museum and one of the largest markets in East Africa, Kibuye Market, which is a riot of sights, sounds and smells, especially on Sundays.

If you are a fan of athletics, especially long-distance running, then Eldoret is a shrine that has to be visited. The city – located on a plateau above the North Rift Valley – is the birthplace of many of the world’s best distance runners, who were brought up fuelling their training with the oxygen-starved air here at 2,090 metres above sea level. Some of the region’s most promising runners as well as elite athletes from around the world hone their skills at training camps in nearby Iten. Many of these camps offer accommodation for running enthusiast tourists who want to experience altitude training and try to keep up with their heroes. If your interests run to dairy rather than distance running, Eldoret also has the Doinyo Lessos Creamery, which sells 20 locally produced varieties of cheeses.

There was yet another impressive showing for Kenya at the World Travel Awards Africa and Indian Ocean Gala Ceremony. In the 2019 event, which brought the elite of the travel industry to Sugar Beach, A Sun Resort, Mauritius, our country took home 13 awards in total, including the night’s biggest prize, Africa’s Leading Destination. The impressive haul of awards was just one short of last year’s 14, but this year the public recognised Kenya as being home to some of the world’s greatest tourist attractions and voted it Africa’s Leading Destination. Kenya took the crown from South Africa and so consolidated its position as a leading light in sub-Saharan African tourism. The range of awards that came Kenya’s way on the night was testimony to the breadth of attractions the country offers and how, as a result, it is able to appeal to many different types of visitor. There are opportunities to ride the waves on jet skis up and down the Kenya coast. Once you’re out in the open ocean you can really let these babies rip and hit speeds of 60 km/h. It’s fast and fun and even gives you the chance for a marine life adventure with companies such as Jet Ski Safaris, just in front of Neptune Hotels on Diani beach, offering the chance to seek out dolphins to ride beside.

JET SKIING – MOMBASA, MALINDI, WATAMU, DIANI BEACH

This national park – a two-and-a-half-hour drive from Nairobi – is one of the only ones in the world you can cycle through. Bikes are available to rent at the park’s Elsa Gate entrance and it’s quite a rush to speed over the narrow, rocky paths and find yourself pedalling alongside herds of game animals such as eland and gazelle, giraffe and zebra. It doesn’t matter if you’re as speedy as Chris Froome in the saddle, cycling past an African buffalo – which are common in the park and can run at 57 km/h – adds a heart-pumping frisson to your trip.

RIDING SAFARIS – LOCATIONS ACROSS THE COUNTRY Channel your inner cowboy with a horseback safari in the country where this exhilarating take on a wildlife adventure first began in the 1970s. Kenya still offers the best opportunity to see large herds of wildlife while riding a horse and the chance of galloping alongside migrating zebra and wildebeest. You can saddle up in national parks and reserves such as Amboseli, Masai Mara, Borana, Ol Donyo Lodge Hills and Laikipia.

WHITE WATER RAFTING – TANA RIVER AND ATHI RIVER Kenya has some spectacular white water and rapids for rafting. It’s a thrilling ride and a great bonding experience for family, friends or work colleagues. The Tana River, just 95 km out of Nairobi, offers gentle stretches perfect for beginners as well broiling rapids to challenge the pros. The Ewaso N’giro River, which flows through the Samburu National Reserve, and the Athi River, bordering Tsavo National Park, combine exhilarating white water with plenty of game sightings. Experienced paddlers will love the Mathioya River. This narrow, low-volume river plunges 450 metres (1,476 ft) over its 22 km and offers a non-stop thrill ride of rapids during the rainy seasons.

ROCK CLIMBING – TSAVO NATIONAL PARK WEST Kenya is the cradle of African rock climbing and offers a host of ascents for all levels across its national parks. Popular crags include Lukenya, just 45 minutes from Nairobi and on land owned by the Mountain Club of

Kenya, which organises beginner and intermediate courses once or twice a year; Hell’s Gate, which offers supremely challenging routes up its iconic main face as well as many easier options; and Roaring Rocks in Tsavo National Park West. All these routes provide excellent training for the big one – Mount Kenya.

BUNGEE JUMPING – SAGANA For those adventurers who really like to throw themselves into new experiences, Kenya offers bungee jumping. Rapids Camp in Sagana specialises in adrenalin-fuelled adventures and its 60-metre steel tower above the Tana River offers the daddy of them all. The 220 steps to the top are usually taken pretty slowly, but things sure speed up on the way down when you take your jump from the platform until the elastic chord tied around your feet snaps you back into the air just metres above the raging waters below.

ZIP LINE - THE FOREST Adventure centre The Forest, situated in the heart of the Aberdare Ranges, contains East Africa’s longest zip line – all 2.4 km of it – which sends riders whizzing across mountain valleys at speeds of up to 60 km/h and brushing the tree tops of the lush Kereita Forest. The zip line – known as ‘The Flying Fox’ – is the first of its kind in Kenya and with distant views of Mount Kenya and the chance to see no-doubt equally shocked colubus monkeys among the trees and elephants pounding along below, this is a zip tour like no other!

Ecological initiatives in Kenya

Kenya is going green Kenya is swathed in unforgettable bio-diverse wonders that draw people from around the world to marvel at their beauty. Here you’ll find vast savannahs where the Big Five must-see animals roam free as well as snowcapped equatorial mountains, the world’s largest desert lake and a coast with miles of spotless white sand lapped by azure seas. However, these unique lands are vulnerable. The initial effects of climate change bringing extreme weather patterns and more frequent droughts as well as urban developments encroaching on wildlife habitats as a side effect of Kenya’s rapid economic growth is a concern. In response, the Kenyan government has sought to protect land alongside the development of its people by reducing greenhouse emissions and deforestation with a Climate Change Action Plan; and through the Kenya Wildlife Service it is working to protect the habitats of its at-risk animals. In this effort it is being aided by the country’s ever more ecologically responsible tourism industry and the Kenyan people. From the earliest pastoralist communities, Kenyans have always had a close relationship with their land, which makes them such fine guardians and guides to visitors. Many local communities have traditional environmental protection systems in place. In every corner of the country, efforts are being made to protect the country’s unique ecosystem and make Kenya a cleaner, safer, more sustainable place to live and visit. Here are just a few.

SINGLE-USE PLASTIC BAN To protect Kenya’s world-renowned beaches, national parks, forests and conservation areas, President Uhuru Kenyatta announced a ban on single-use plastics (such as

plastic straws and water bottles) in these areas to take effect from June 2020. The move, part of the country’s sustainable development goals, arrives on the heels of the ban on plastic bags – world-leading in its strictness – with anyone caught carrying one liable to a hefty fine. Coastal communities involved in regular beach clean-ups have put the collected trash to innovative use, with a group of Watamu fishermen creating a traditional dhow sailing boat out of discarded plastic and the Nairobi environmental protection organisation Ocean Sole Africa making purchasable cute animal figurines from the thousands of flip-flops washed up on the Kenyan coast. THE MAASAI LOITA FOREST This lush jungle coiled around the Loita Hills to the northeast of the Masai Mara National Reserve is home to a large Maasai community who regard it as sacred. Tribal elders ensure the area stays pristine, tightly controlling the felling of trees and grazing of cattle, allowing wildlife such as colobus monkeys, buffaloes, forest pigs and bushbucks to thrive. Hiking tours are available – guided by Maasai – to explore this unspoilt paradise.

GAZI Tucked away on the coast road about 40 km south of Mombasa, this secluded village abuts a thriving mangrove forest that extends to the Indian Ocean. The forest is accessible via the Gazi Women’s Mangrove Boardwalk, an

This is the introduction of battery-powered safari vehicles. For the time-being, these converted and electric Toyota Land Cruisers will only be available for top-end safaris. But it can only be a matter of time before the traditional all-weather Toyota Hiace, popular among Kenyan operators, gets the same treatment.

GROWING MORE TREES The Kenyan Ministry of Environment and Forestry has launched an initiative to plant 1.8 billion trees and achieve 10 per cent forest cover in the country by 2022. The plan – under the banner ‘Panda miti, boresha maisha’ (‘Plant trees, improve life’) – aims to reverse the adverse effects of climate change. The International Tree Foundation has signalled its support with its own campaign to plant 20 million trees in and around Kenya’s highland forests, starting on Mount Kenya, by 2024. Local businesses are on board, too, with The Forest adventure centre, in collaboration with Kenya Forest and Wildlife Services, Kiambu County and the community, planting more than 30,000 trees over the past two and a half years around its site in the Aberdare Ranges. ecotourism project. Women from the village manage the site and provide guided tours of the mangroves, which are a vital coastal ecosystem, providing a sheltered breeding place for fish and assuring the future of the local fishing industry. Fishermen are among those who plant new mangrove seedlings each year to maintain the forest and mitigate the effects of climate change. Sustainable livelihoods such as beekeeping are also promoted within the forest.

GROWING CORAL Kenya’s coral reefs support the world’s most diverse ecosystem and are a huge tourist attraction; but, like other reefs around the world, they are under threat from global warming. Two state agencies, the Kenya Marine and Fisheries Research Institute and the Kenya Wildlife Service, have had a restoration project in place since 2012 that draws on support from coastal communities. Residents of Wasini Island, off south-east Kenya, have been replanting the surrounding reefs with corals raised in nurseries. The replanted coral reefs have grown quickly, making the area one of Kenya’s prime diving destinations and increasing fish stocks.

BATTERY-POWERED SAFARI VEHICLES For decades tourists have headed out on game drives in diesel-engine safari vehicles. In fact, there’s been no other option.

COFFEE SUSTAINABLE PRACTICES The vivid, bold flavours of Kenyan coffee are beloved of discerning drinkers and a visit to a plantation to taste the premium brews and discover the expert production procedures is high on many visitors’ wish-lists. Many of the country’s plantations, large and small, have adopted sustainable practices, eschewing the use of chemicals, to maintain yields over time and safeguard the health of the land for future generations. The Mutira Farmers’ Co-operative, a group of over 5,500 Kenyan smallholders, produces coffee certified by Rainforest Alliance for its environmental, social and economic sustainability.

RENEWABLE ENERGY Currently, 70 per cent of Kenya’s installed electricity capacity comes from green energy sources, with President Kenyatta wanting to make that 100 per cent by 2020. The hospitality industry is on board with recent achievements including the Kilaguni Serena Safari Lodge becoming the country’s first hotel to be completely powered by solar energy. Capital gains – a stay in Nairobi reveals the heart of Kenya There was a time when few visitors lingered in Kenya’s fast-paced capital beyond a safari stopover or a whistle-stop business conference, but no longer. Not only is Nairobi filling up with five-star international hotels and super-stylish boutique options with a level of comfort it’s hard to part from, but tourists are finding that this fast-paced city has plenty of attractions to warrant a longer stay and that it reveals insights into the true heart of Kenya. Diversity and contrast abound here – what other city has an untrammelled, wildlife-packed wilderness just minutes from its urban jungle? – and even its developed districts all have distinct characters, from the round-the-clock party vibe of Westlands through the verdant tranquillity of Karen to the mansions of Gigiri. Wherever you are in the city you’ll pick up on its indomitable creative spirit. You’ll see it in the resilient and ingenious ways that people get by in the informal settlements such as Kibera and Mathare; in the city’s thriving arts, fashion and food scene; and in the establishment of a US$ 1 billion tech hub that has attracted major players such as IBM and Microsoft and socially minded start-ups. The culture of creativity and commercial enterprise is bringing worldly Kenyans from the diaspora back to the capital – along with plenty more tourists. Here’s our lowdown on this high-altitude (1,795 metres) city.

ANIMAL ADVENTURES Nairobi is not one of those modern capitals separated from the great wilderness that surrounds it. The city’s National Park is located just 7 km from its central business

district and provides the bizarre sight of lions, cheetahs, rhinos, zebras and giraffes – in fact, 95 per cent of Kenya’s wildlife species can be seen here – living wild in a landscape next to highways and silhouetted against skyscrapers. Be sure to get there early – actually, be sure to get everywhere early, Nairobi’s traffic has two speeds: slow and stop – as the animals are more active, and so visible, before the heat of the day kicks in. Nearby is the David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust, which cares for orphaned elephants and black rhinos until they can be reintroduced into the wild. Watching the elephant calves being fed and rolling around in the mud baths is a fun, if messy, experience.

More animal conservation takes place at the Langata Giraffe Centre, which protects Rothschild’s giraffes. There are opportunities to feed these endangered animals and even to stay the night at the nearby manor, where a morning alarm call can take the shape of one of the six-metre-high creatures poking its head through your window.

FOOD FAVOURITES Kenya has an undeserved reputation for cuisine that caters almost exclusively to carnivores. Yes, you don’t have to look far to find somewhere selling nyama choma (barbecued meat), but the country has deep links with India and its vegetable-friendly dishes are popular. Nairobi especially has a thriving culinary scene that is committed to healthy eating and is internationally inspired as well as making use of fresh ingredients from Kenyan land and sea. Such is the capital’s fast-growing foodie culture that it is attracting leading global talent to run its kitchens. Whether you want sushi, salads, steaks or seafood, are looking for a luxury setting and impeccable service or prefer a relaxed meal in a leafy locale, Nairobi has it all.

ART Art runs deep in the traditional societies of Kenya, with tribes such as the Turkana, Samburu, Kuria and Maasai placing great significance on decoration. Such heritage art is readily available in Nairobi. Among a number of options, the Maasai market, a movable feast that sets up

at a different spot in the city each day, is good for jewellery, fabric and soapstone-carved items, while the all-women artisans of Kazuri Beads in Karen sell lovely hand-made jewellery and ceramics. However, the capital is also home to a growing number of contemporary artists – working across the media of painting, sculpture, film, photography and furniture – who pursue a more personal vision. These artists are ingenious and full of initiative, with many using what others would consider waste as the medium for their art. They include Alex Wainaina, who creates sculptures from repurposed scrap metal and exhibits at the Banana Hill Gallery in Nairobi, and the artists of Kitandela Hot Glass, just outside Nairobi National Park, who create amazing chandeliers, lamps, beads and full interiors from recycled glass. Many new artists have found studio and exhibition space as well as receptive audiences through Nairobi artist collectives such as Brush Tu, Kuona Arts Collective, the Nest Collective, Maasai Mbili and the GoDown Arts Centre. The latter’s headquarters in Nairobi’s industrial area is undergoing a US$ 20 million revamp – making it the first major complex for performing and visual arts built since Kenya’s independence – that will provide cutting-edge studio space for artists young and old as well as a landmark meeting place for the public.

GREEN SPACES If the urban rush and tumult get too much, there are plenty of serene and secure green spaces to escape to in the ‘Green City in the Sun’. Karura, Nairobi’s beautiful urban forest, is networked with trails to walk, run or cycle

The Nairobi Arboretum has provided a protected site for indigenous trees for more than a century and now is home to over 300 species. It’s a popular spot for picnics and it has attracted plenty of wildlife, with vervet monkeys, chameleons and a host of birds and butterflies calling it home. Uhuru Park provides a natural sanctuary on the fringes of the CBD and is a favourite retreat for city workers, offering fine views of downtown Nairobi.

If you’re after a bargain and a chance to soak up the manic entrepreneurial energy of Nairobi, head for one of its many street markets. Hone your haggling skills on Ngong Road, thronged with artisans selling everything from furniture and paintings to plant pots, then head for the fashion discounts at Toi Market, where clothes can be bought cheaply in bundles, or the labyrinthine Gikomba Market, where you’ll find the prices slashed even further.

NIGHTLIFE Non-stop Nairobi welcomes night owls, especially its Westlands district. Head for the bustling bars of Electric Avenue before checking out the club scene. Once the midnight hour approaches, the Black Diamond nightclub is a popular place with a sound system that plays mostly

The Nairobi National Museum is a must for anyone wanting to get a feel for Kenya’s rich heritage. Pass the life-sized fibreglass model of Ahmed, the enormous elephant put under 24-hour armed guard by President Jomo Kenyatta during the 1980s poaching crisis, and you’ll find the museum’s permanent collection, which includes close to a 1,000 stuffed birds and dozens of stuffed mammals, allowing a close-up study of the country’s diverse wildlife. The Cradle of Humankind exhibition includes a collection of skulls thought to be the world’s earliest human fossils and the country’s multifarious tribes are represented in a room full of ethnological artefacts. _net / Sh

Kenyans love their malls, where they can shop, eat and play under one roof, and Nairobi has more of them than any other East African city. Among the biggest and best are Gigiri’s Village Market, with over 150 retail outlets as well as a cinema, a bowling alley and a water slide, and Two Rivers Mall, which has 200-plus stores and this year has added a ferris wheel. Smaller, but with a style all its own, is The Hub, in Karen, which has a food court piazza that looks especially striking lit up at night and even a planetarium.

Kenyan and African pop. Another good night is guaranteed at The Alchemist, which attracts some of the city’s best DJs as well as mixologists who know how to craft a good cocktail. There’s an outdoor lounge area if you need a break from the heat of the dance floor and the club even has its own (very good) food van if hunger strikes late into the night.

The leafy suburb of Karen is known for its charming boutiques. The wooded site is inspired by the traditional architecture of the native Maasai people. It is just a 20-minute drive from Amboseli National Park, which offers sightings of the Big Five and is famously the best place in Africa to get close to freeranging elephants. This is the only lodge in the Samburu National Reserve with an on-site waterhole. Swiss-style study The Boma International Hospitality College (BIHC), in partnership with the Business & Hotel Management School (BHMS) in Switzerland, aims to nurture interest in the hospitality industry. BIHC has developed a state-of-the-art study programme designed to prepare students towards demanding and rewarding careers. The Flying Doctors Society of Africa

A life-saving service The Flying Doctors Society of Africa (FDSA) is a charitable organisation established in 1971 to raise funds through the sale of memberships and various fundraising events to enhance medical outreach and access to medical emergency services through its networks. It offers membership subscription – temporary and annual – covering the whole of East Africa. Each member of the society is entitled to free evacuation to a medical facility in Nairobi in the event of a lifethreatening medical emergency.

Research shows that each year between 50,000 and 100,000 women of childbearing age worldwide are affected by this devastating condition. FDSA offers crucial support to the community by providing free surgical operations to these women, and build medical capacity through training medical specialists and community health workers.

Once the year’s medical services have been funded, all the remaining membership money is used to support the society’s obstetric fistula programme.

Maanzoni Lodge

Kenya Association of Hotelkeepers & Caterers WHO WE ARE Founded in 1944, KAHC is the principal umbrella organisation bringing together hotels, lodges, camps, restaurants, membership clubs and prominent airline caterers whose common theme is to render services in the hospitality industry.

OUR VISION Making Kenyan hospitality ‘globally competitive and viable’ for the stakeholders, who include guests, shareholders, employees, local communities, suppliers and the government.

OUR MEMBERSHIP The Association enjoys a huge membership of mostly starrated hotels, restaurants, caterers, lodges, tented camps, residential cottages and casinos.

WHAT WE DO The core service that the Association renders to its members includes:

1. ADVOCACY The Association aims to create a conducive business environment for players in the hospitality industry by influencing decisions within institutions and economic systems.

2. INDUSTRIAL RELATIONS The Association promotes and protects harmonious industrial relations, achieved through Collective Bargaining Agreements (CBAs) that are negotiated and signed with the union in the trade.

3. REPRESENTATION The Association is the principal voice for hotels and restaurants to the government and other agencies on

matters of regulations, licensing and policy. This role is fulfilled through representation and contribution to various bodies including Kenya Tourism Board, Kenya Tourism Federation and Tourism Fund, among others.

4. MARKETING The Association promotes and showcases its members’ products and services through the Hotel & Restaurant Guide and collaborates with the Kenya Tourism Board by participating in various tourism trade shows and exhibitions.

5. TRAINING The Association coordinates with the Kenya Utalii College, as well as other training institutions, on training and development programmes.

6. INFORMATION EXCHANGE The Association acts as the principal information exchange network for members and the industry by maintaining an industry databank and regular communication with members on issues such as government policies on tax and pricing, in addition to licensing and classification for hotels and restaurants, among many others.

7. A COMMON BOND Membership to our association gives individual hotels or hotel groups an invaluable stamp of recognition and of belonging to an important and reputable organisation in the hospitality fraternity. It affords them a forum to air their views, discuss common problems and present a united front as the most fundamental sub-sector of the tourism industry.
