Hoy la historia se escribe de una manera distinta y tanto el gobierno nacional y local, como el sector privado le están apostando a este vector de crecimiento. Desde el Puerto de Barranquilla, la sociedad portuaria más experimentada de la ciudad, tenemos claro que somos un factor clave en la construcción de una ciudad cada día más competitiva. Ofrecemos a la industria condiciones idóneas para su fortalecimiento y nos conectamos con el resto del país y del mundo. Por lo anterior, hemos decidido enfocar nuestros esfuerzos en la consolidación de una plataforma logística que no sólo logre satisfacer las necesidades de nuestros clientes, sino también las de una ciudad deseosa de poder aprovechar al máximo su posición geográfica, para sostener en el

tiempo la transformación que ha venido experimentando en los últimos años. Es por esto, que hemos venido implementando un Plan Maestro de Inversiones 2015-2017, el cual ha estado enfocado principalmente en la adquisición de equipos, mejoramiento de nuestra infraestructura, fortalecimiento de la seguridad y automatización de procesos. En el marco de este, hemos venido implementando 117 proyectos con una inversión de 129.000 millones de pesos. Para 2018, realizaremos un nuevo ejercicio de planeación estratégica con miras a seguir desarrollando iniciativas que nos permitan alcanzar nuestra visión. Somos conscientes que lo que hacemos tiene un gran impacto, tanto para nuestros clientes como para nuestros colaboradores y nuestra ciudad, por eso seguimos trabajando día a día para satisfacer sus necesidades logísticas y de conectividad y seguir de esta forma impulsando su desarrollo.

LA PLATAFORMA LOGÍSTICA DEL CARIBE COLOMBIANO The logistics platform of Colombia’s Caribbean region Strategically located alongside the Magdalena River and the Caribbean Sea, the city of Barranquilla for many years did not fully exploit the huge potential of its privileged status as a natural city-port. Today, this history is being revised, with both national and local governments, along with the private sector, placing their bets on this growth vector. As the most experienced port terminal in the city, the Port of Barranquilla continues to play a key role in the development of a city-port that is becoming more competitive with each passing day. We provide the industry with the appropriate conditions it needs to grow stronger, while offering connectivity with the rest of the country and the world at large. Because of all this, we have decided to focus our efforts on consolidating a logistics platform that can meet not only

the needs of our customers but also the expectations of a city looking to make the most of its geographical advantages – thus consolidating and maintaining the transformation we have experienced in recent years. As we continue to follow our Master Plan of Investments 2015-2017 – with its emphasis on new equipment, improved infrastructure, stronger security and automation of processes – we have invested COP 129 billion in 117 new projects. We intend to draw up a new Strategic Plan for 2018 in which we will seek to go on developing initiatives to achieve our vision. We are aware that our actions have a very positive impact, not only for our customers but also for our co-partners and our city; and it’s for this reason that we continue to work day in, day out to satisfy their logistics and connectivity needs, thus contributing to their own development.

El Puerto de Barranquilla, una importante terminal marítima y fluvial con más de 80 años de experienca, situada a 22 km de la desembocadura del Río Magdalena, es la principal terminal portuaria multipropósito del Caribe colombiano. El puerto abarca una superficie de 94 hectáreas, con una longitud total de muelles de 1058 metros. Está

equipado para la manipulación de contenedores, carga refrigerada y congelada, carga general y carga proyecto, gráneles y coque. Además de su ubicación estratégica, el Puerto de Barranquilla ofrece una gama de servicios complementarios que le permiten brindar a sus clientes valor agregado, mayor competitividad y excelente conectividad.

PUERTO DE BARRANQUILLA: MAS DE 80 AÑOS IMPULSANDO DESARROLLO Port of Barranquilla: Over 80 years promoting development Barranquilla desarrolla una estrategia de modernización de sus operaciones y expansión de sus servicios logísticos, como respuesta a los desafíos planteados por el comercio internacional. Este renovado y revitalizado Puerto de Barranquilla tiene como prioridad la ejecución de un plan de negocios que procura acelerar las inversiones, concentrándose en cuatro aspectos principales: teconología, seguridad, infraestructura y equipos. La terminal fue fundada en 1936 y actualmente la organización responsable de de su administración es la Sociedad Portuaria Regional de Barranquilla S.A. (SPRB). En junio de 2013 la SPRB transformó su imagen corporativa y fortaleció sus estándares de calidad y eficiencia, buscando posicionarse como el mayor puerto multipropósito del Caribe colombiano. La SPRB fue fundada el 13 de diciembre de 1993 bajo el amparo de la Ley Nº 001, que dos años antes había privatizado las operaciones portuarias en Colombia. La entidad se había propuesto como objetivo mejorar la ventaja competitiva del país frente a los modernos desafíos planteados por la globalización económica, política y social. La empresa portuaria obtuvo una primera concesión por 20 años de la terminal fluvial y marítima. En 2007, gracias a la buena administración y los favorables resultados obtenidos, la concesión le fue prorrogada hasta 2033, bajo el compromiso de realizar inversiones por US$ 179 millones. A principios de 2013 la Sociedad Portuaria obtuvo el respaldo del Grupo Southern Cross, uno de los

grupos de inversión más grande de América Latina, quienes se centran en la creación de valor y hacen énfasis en cómo transformar, hacer crecer y mejorar sus inversiones. El objetivo principal de Southern Cross ha sido fortalecer el plan de modernización del puerto, aportando capital adicional para el mejoramiento de la infraestructura y sistemas tecnológicos. Eficiencia. Flexibilidad. Innovación. Estas son las herramientas utilizadas por el renovado Puerto de Barranquilla en su esfuerzo de máximo aprovechamiento de las oportunidades ofrecidas por el Río Magdalena y los terrenos circundantes. Actualmente, la carga es almacenada, custodiada y distribuida a través de una compleja cadena logística, de la que Barranquilla controla hasta el último detalle. El modelo de servicio puerta a puerta que actualmente ofrece el Puerto de Barranquilla brinda seguridad acerca de la trazabilidad del negocio y la responsabilidad empresarial que los clientes merecen. Como puerto fluvial y marítimo, Barranquilla representa una interfaz estratégica entre los productores colombianos y el Atlántico, ofreciendo ventajas en términos del comercio internacional.

The Port of Barranquilla is a major sea and river gateway located 22 km from the mouth of the Magdalena River. It is the leading multipurpose port on the Caribbean side of Colombia with over 80 years of experience. The port covers an area of 94 hectares and has a total quay length of 1,058 meters. It is equipped to handle containers, refrigerated and frozen cargo, general cargo and project cargo, bulk cargo and coke. Along with its strategic location, the Port of Barranquilla offers a range of complementary services to provide its customers with added value, greater competitiveness and enhanced connectivity. Barranquilla is continuing to follow a strategy of modernizing its operations and expanding its logistics services in response to the challenges of

Como puerto fluvial y marítimo, Barranquilla representa una conexión estratégica entre los productores colombianos y el Océano Atlántico, ofreciendo ventajas en términos de comercio internacional. Este puerto multipropósito está a 22 km de distancia de la desembocadura del Río Magdalena en el Mar Caribe, una ubicación ideal para la movilización de contenedores, carga refrigerada y congelada, cargas a granel, carga general y coque. El hecho de que Barranquilla sea un puerto tanto fluvial como marítimo le otorga una ventaja clave, permitiéndole ofrecer sus servicios logísticos a precios muy competitivos gracias a las más diversas combinaciones de transporte multimodal.

TERMINAL PORTUARIA MULTIPROPÓSITO UBICADA ESTRATÉGICAMENTE Multipurpose gateway in key location desembocadura del Río Magdalena hasta el Puente Pumarejo. En el amplio delta conocido como Bocas de Ceniza se construyeron tajamares y otras obras hidráulicas, a efectos de mantener la profundidad necesaria para el ingreso de buques de gran tamaño. Conforme a la Ley Nº 001 de 1993, el gobierno colombiano es responsable de mantener la profundidad mínima del canal de acceso en 36 pies (11 metros). Dado que la misma depende del volumen del caudal y la corriente del río, a diario se realizan estudios batimétricos para determinar qué zonas necesitan ser dragadas.

El terreno que abarca el Puerto de Barranquilla es el más extenso de Colombia, con una superficie de 94 hectáreas. El terminal portuario contiene espaciosos patios para el almacenaje de más de 6000 teus de contenedores, y bodegas con una capacidad superior a 140.000 toneladas métricas de carga a granel y 100.000 toneladas métricas de carga general. Existe un espacio dedicado específicamente para la manipulación sustentable de coque, con una capacidad de almacenaje superior a las 170.000 toneladas métricas. El puerto tiene un muelle lineal de 1058 metros de longitud, con seis posiciones de atraque para buques, por lo cual existe espacio para una futura expansión de los muelles y puestos de atraque. El muelle tiene una profundidad de 36 a 40 pies (11 a 12 metros). Hay un muelle de 550 metros para operaciones fluviales con una profundidad aproximada de 3,7 metros. comerciales, goza de una ubicación que es la más estratégica de Colombia en términos de los tratados de libre comercio, y su zona circundante funciona como interfaz entre el interior del país y el Atlántico. Otro factor clave es la proximidad de otros dos puertos, Cartagena y Santa Marta, con los cuales el Puerto de Barranquilla compite pero a la vez se complementa.

The multipurpose port lies 22 km from the mouth of the Magdalena River where it meets the Caribbean Sea – an ideal location for handling containers, frozen and refrigerated cargo, bulk cargo, general cargo and coke. The fact that Barranquilla is both a sea port and a river port gives it a key advantage: its logistics services are very competitively priced thanks to a diverse combination of multimodal transportation. The Barranquilla port area is the largest port estate in Colombia, covering 94 hectares. It includes spacious yards for storage of over 6,000 TEUs of containers and warehouses with a capacity of over 140,000 metric tons of bulk cargo and 100,000 metric tons of general cargo. There is a dedicated area for sustainable handling of coke with over 170,000 metric tons of storage capacity. The port has 1,058 meters of quays with six mooring positions for ships, thus offering scope for any future

expansion of docks and mooring positions. The dock has a depth alongside of 36.0 to 40.0 ft (11.0 to 12.0 meters). There is a 550 meter dock for river operations with a depth of 12.0 ft (3.7 meters). Barranquilla is a multipurpose port for the industrial and commercial sectors. It has the most strategic location in Colombia in terms of free trade agreements. The surrounding land serves as an interface between the hinterland and the Atlantic. Another key factor is the proximity of two other ports, Cartagena and Santa Marta. La recuperación de la navegabilidad en el tramo estratégicamente importante que va de Barrancabermeja a Barranquilla fue declarada asunto de interés nacional por el presidente de Colombia, Juan Manuel Santos. Esto condujo a que el Proyecto de Recuperación de la Navegabilidad del Río Magdalena, una nueva perspectiva para el comercio internacional colombiano, ofreciera la posibilidad de transformar en navegable el tramo del río que conecta Puerto Salgar, La Dorada y Barrancabermeja. Desde allí, una vez dragado a la profundidad adecuada, el río se transformará en una ruta estratégica para el transporte de carga hasta Bocas de Ceniza. Se convocó a una licitación bajo el sistema de asociación público-privada, a raíz de la cual el trabajo de dragado y canalización de 866 km está siendo efectuado por la Corporación Autónoma Regional del Río Grande de la Magdalena (Cormagdalena). Una vez que el curso del río y su calado sean suficientes para la navegación por lancha hasta Barrancabermeja, una ciudad situada a 100 km al norte de Bogotá, el tráfico comercial fluirá más libremente y será posible descongestionar el tráfico carretero. Lo mejor de todo será que con ello, Colombia habrá adquirido una herramienta logística que le permitirá aprovechar las ventajas del libre comercio. La principal arteria fluvial de Colombia, que conecta las mayores terminales portuarias del país, tiene una longitud de más de 1500 km desde su origen en Puerto Honda hasta su desembocadura en Bocas de Ceniza. Su zona de influencia constituye 24 % del territorio continental del país, contiene 80 % de la población y representa el 85 % del producto interno bruto. Un 60 % de la carga se concentra en el interior, en Bogotá, Medellín y Cali. Esta parte de la carga se transporta por tierra, un sistema que es más costoso, menos eficiente y más dañino para el medio ambiente. La mejor y más eficiente ruta de Colombia es el Río Magdalena.

CORMAGDALENA Esta es una entidad estatal industrial y comercial creada por el presidente Juan Manuel Santos, en acuerdo con el Parlamento. La iniciativa tuvo como fundamento la necesidad de recuperar la

navegabilidad del Río Magdalena, para así proporcionar una ruta de transporte viable y permitir la plena realización del valor ambiental, social y económico del río.

Navigation of the Magdalena River is an environmental, economic and social priority for Colombia. The river has a rich biodiversity that combines nature, history and culture. It flows from north to south across 18 of the departments of Colombia and is the safest, cleanest and economically most convenient route for cargo transportation. The restoration of river navigation on the strategically important stretch from Barrancabermeja to Barranquilla was

declared a matter of national interest by President Juan Manuel Santos. This led to the Magdalena River Navigation Recovery Program, a new perspective for Colombian international trade, offering the prospect of navigating the stretch of river that connects Puerto Salgar, La Dorada and Barrancabermeja. From there, once it is dredged to the proper depth, the river will become a strategic route for transporting cargo up to Bocas de Ceniza. A tender was called under the public-private partnership system and the 866 km dredging and canalization work is being carried out by Corporación Autónoma Regional del Río Grande de la Magdalena (Cormagdalena). Navigation of the Magdalena River is a national priority that transcends sectorial interests. Once the river’s course and depth are sufficient for barge navigation up to Barrancabermeja, a town 100 km to the north of Bogotá, commercial traffic will flow more freely and it will be possible to ease traffic congestion on land. Best of all, Colombia will have acquired a logistics tool that allows it to enjoy the benefits of free trade. Colombia’s main river artery, connecting the largest port terminals of the country, is over 1,500 km in length from its source at Puerto Honda to its mouth at Bocas de Ceniza. Its area of influence, which accounts for 24 per cent of the country’s continental territory, contains 80 per cent of the population and accounts for 85 per cent of gross domestic product. Sixty per cent of the cargo is concentrated inland in Bogotá, Medellin and Cali. This part of the cargo is transported by land, a system that is costlier, less efficient and more harmful to the environment. Colombia’s best and most efficient route is the Magdalena River.

El Puerto de Barranquilla, consciente de la importancia de la tecnología para la optimización de sus procesos operativos y administrativos, se encuentra implementando un plan de inversiones enfocado en la actualización de sus sistemas e infraestructura informática y seguridad electrónica. En los últimos dos años ha desarrollado múltiples proyectos que le han permitido renovarse.

IMPLEMENTACIÓN DEL SISTEMA TRANSKAL PARA LA GESTIÓN DE LA BODEGA DE REFRIGERADOS Implementación de un sistema WMS (Warehouse Management System), con el fin de gestionar de manera óptima el funcionamiento de las operaciones dentro de la bodega y centro de distribución de carga refrigerada y congelada.

PROGRAMA DE CITAS Con este proyecto se logró desarrollar un programa de citas de operaciones que permite el control y planeación del ingreso de vehículos pesados para el recibo o despacho de carga en el Puerto de Barranquilla. Como resultado se obtuvo una disminución en los tiempos de atención de vehículos, optimización del uso de los equipos durante la operación y la migración de varios trámites para realizarlos en línea, sin necesidad de acercarse a las instalaciones del puerto.

CONTROL DE ACCESO Se realizó la ampliación de la cobertura física del sistema de control de acceso con el fin de incrementar los controles

de seguridad en las entradas principales, oficinas, patios y bodegas, entre otros. De esta manera, se cumplen las normativas (BASC, PBIP, CTPAT) y se genera un mayor control de la instalación portuaria, a través de la trazabilidad de los ingresos de visitantes y el control de uso de carnets que genera el sistema.

REMODELACIÓN DEL DATACENTER Este proyecto se realizó con el fin de dar solución a las necesidades de espacio físico y optimización de riesgos del Sistema de Tecnología del Puerto de Barranquilla. De igual forma permitió el fortalecimiento de la infraestructura y los servicios de TI que soportan todos los procesos del negocio. La tecnología de primera línea de sus varios subsistemas (arquitectónico, eléctrico, de refrigeración, de cableado estructurado y de seguridad) brinda escalabilidad, seguridad y eficiencia.

IMPLEMENTACIÓN DE SALESFORCE Y KACTUS Dentro del plan de renovación tecnológica del Puerto, se adquirieron dos nuevos sistemas de software para la gestión administrativa del negocio: Salesforce y Kactus. Con la herramienta CRM Salesforce se logra realizar una gestión integral de los clientes de manera más eficiente y ágil. Por su parte, el software Kactus le ha permitido al Puerto gestionar de manera centralizada el talento humano y el pago de la nómina y les brinda a los trabajadores la opción de hacer consultas de su historia laboral en tiempo real.

TRANSKAL SYSTEM FOR REEFER CENTER The Transkal warehouse management system (WMS) has been introduced to optimize the operational efficiency of the port’s dedicated warehouse and distribution center for refrigerated and frozen cargo.

BOOKING SYSTEM A new booking system has been installed, allowing the port to control and plan the arrival of heavy vehicles inside the Port of Barranquilla to pick up or set down cargo. This has led to a reduction in vehicle processing times, an optimum use of equipment during the operation and the ability to complete various formalities on line rather than in person at the port facilities.

ACCESS CONTROL SYSTEM The physical coverage of the access control system has been expanded to allow greater security control at main entrances, offices, yards, warehouses and other port areas and to comply with the BASC, PBIP and C-TPAT regulations. This has led to more effective control of the port facilities through the traceability of visitors and the mandatory carrying of ID cards.

DATACENTER REMODELING This project was carried out in order to solve the needs of physical space and risk management optimization of the Port of Barranquilla’s technology system. There has been significant investment in bulk cargo handling with the aim of increasing the movement of this type of cargo. This includes the modernization of two of the port’s truck scales, improvements to the weighing service and the control of incoming and outgoing goods. In the context of the Magdalena River Navigation Project, the port has invested in the loading of bagged bulks directly onto barges. By using a barge loader with an inbuilt weighing system, the port is able to achieve a productivity rate of up to 200 metric tons per hour for this type of cargo.

Dry and liquid bulk commodities are handled and stored with greater-than-ever efficiency at the Port of Barranquilla’s dedicated bulk terminal. The port has invested in infrastructure and upgraded warehouses in order to streamline its bulk handling operations and widen its range of services. Today, Barranquilla has the capacity to unload up to 12,000 metric tons per day of bulk cargo at a rate of up to 500 metric tons per hour. The port can receive two bulk ships simultaneously and store their cargo in different warehouses.

La carga general representa aproximadamente 19 % de la carga total movilizada por el Puerto de Barranquilla. Una parte considerable de este tráfico corresponde a productos metálicos de variada naturaleza. Barranquilla constituye un centro estratégico para la industria metalúrgica colombiana, y el puerto está apropiadamente equipado para movilizar el creciente comercio internacional generado por este sector. manipulación de carga general. Dicha infraestructura comprende un patio de 35.000 metros cuadrados de almacenaje al aire libre y cuatro bodegas con una capacidad total de 18.835 metros cuadrados.

El puerto tiene cuatro grúas móviles con una capacidad máxima de 125 toneladas, y más de 70 máquinas para la manipulación de cargas, además de otros equipos para la movilización de carga general y carga proyecto. A esto se le suma un servicio personalizado los 365 días del año, con un personal idóneo y especializado en la manipulación de carga.

General cargo accounts for about 25 per cent of the total cargo handled by the Port of Barranquilla. A significant part of this throughput is metal products of various kinds.

There is a storage area next to the dock for oversized items such as project cargo as well as spaces next to the warehouses and docks for 81,000 metric tons of wire rods, steel coils and metal structures.

Cada año Barranquilla moviliza alrededor de 800.000 toneladas métricas de coque, un producto que no requiere un sistema de bandas transportadoras encapsuladas para ser transportado al buque. The handling of coke – the high-value solid fuel derived from coal – is a key activity for the Port of Barranquilla, which operates a dedicated modern terminal. Each year Barranquilla handles 800,000 metric tons of coke, a product that does not require a sealed pipe conveyor system for transportation to the vessel. This vital fuel represents 14 per cent of the total cargo handled at the multipurpose terminal. The port has a dedicated area of 8.5 hectares for coke with a storage capacity of over 170,000 metric tons. There is a berthing quay at dock No 1 with a depth of 35.0 ft (11.0 meters), together with a weighing service, a discharge service in the yard, internal handling, transportation and ship loading at a rate of 7,000 metric tons per day. In addition, the port offers a booking system for trucks that ensures immediate cargo services and has led to a significant reduction in vehicle delays. The port also has an operations office to assist clients, a mechanical maintenance workshop, a spare parts warehouse, plus controls on land and inventory services for the classification of coke by particle size, available to customers and port users through the Port On Line website.

En tal sentido, la terminal portuaria cuenta con personal de seguridad entrenado en la protección de la integridad física de los usuarios, bienes y activos de las instalaciones portuarias y la mercancia de los clientes. La seguridad se mantiene las 24 horas todos los días del año, empleando tecnología de punta reforzada por un centro de monitoreo a través de un circuito cerrado de televisión. Con el objetivo de garantizar la seguridad, el puerto colabora estrechamente con la Dirección de Impuestos y Aduanas Nacionales de Colombia (DIAN), la Policía Antinarcóticos, el Instituto Nacional de Vigilancia de Medicamentos y Alimentos (INVIMA), el Instituto Colombiano Agropecuario (ICA) y Agencias Internacionales. Barranquilla es la única terminal portuaria del Atlántico colombiano que cuenta en sus instalaciones con una base antinarcóticos, que trabaja coordinadamente con la Policía Nacional de Colombia.

El puerto cuenta con un servicio de inspección de los contenedores de importación y exportación supervisado por la Policía Antinarcóticos y monitoreado por CCTV (Circuito Cerrado de TV). Cuenta asimismo con equipo de inspección no intrusiva (escáneres) para el desarrollo de esta actividad.

PBIP El Puerto de Barranquilla ha aplicado el Código PBIP (Protección de Buques e Instalaciones Portuarias) desde 2004 y la entrada a las instalaciones portuarias solo se autoriza una vez que el solicitante haya pasado por estrictos protocolos de seguridad.

BASC El Puerto de Barranquilla está acreditado por la BASC (Business Alliance for Secure Commerce, o Alianza Empresarial para el Comercio Seguro). Las estadísticas revelan que los embarques colombianos certificados por

La gestión de los recursos portuarios de agua, suelo y aire es supervisada por el Ministerio de Ambiente, Vivienda y Desarrollo Territorial de Colombia y por la Corporación Autónoma Regional del Atlántico. El Puerto procura cumplir – e incluso superar – las disposiciones de la ley nacional relativa a los estándares ambientales. La Dirección HSSEQ cuenta con un equipo de técnicos ambientales especializados, a cargo del sistema de irrigación, el uso de lonas polisombra, la plantación de árboles y arbustos para crear barreras vivas, y la utilización de tanques sedimentadores para asegurar la calidad de las aguas vertidas. Este equipo de técnicos también tiene a su cargo los jardines y espacios verdes del recinto portuario, a la vez que cuida del ecosistema fluvial – hábitat de una variada fauna que incluye garzas, peces, pequeños reptiles y manatíes.

Five key aspects of port operations – health, security, safety, environment and quality – are supervised by one integrated department, the HSSEQ Division. The Port of Barranquilla took the decision in 2015 to bring these aspects together under a single umbrella because they are so closely dependent on one another.

INDUSTRIAL SAFETY AND OCCUPATIONAL HEALTH The Port of Barranquilla believes it is vital to prevent and control occupational accidents and illness among employees and contracted workers. Accordingly, it has developed multiple programs to ensure compliance with the rules and to provide its people with health care.

SECURITY In the field of security, the Port of Barranquilla has achieved a national and international reputation as a reliable port facility. The port complies in full with the principal codes and protection programs relating to drug trafficking and smuggling.

The port has security personnel, trained to protect the physical integrity of users, property and assets of the port facilities and customers’ goods. Security is maintained round the clock using up-to-date technology supported by closed-circuit TV monitoring. There is close cooperation with the National Office of Taxes and Customs, the Anti-Narcotics Police, the National Food and Drug Surveillance Agency and the Colombian Agricultural Institute. Barranquilla is the only Atlantic port in Colombia to have an anti-narcotics base on its premises, operating in liaison with the national police force. The port has an inspection facility for export and import containers, supervised by the Anti-Narcotics Police and monitored by CCTV. It also has non-intrusive inspection equipment (scanners) to develop this activity.

ISPS The Port of Barranquilla has applied the ISPS Code since 2004 and entry to port facilities is authorized only after the applicant has undergone strict security protocols.

BASC The Port of Barranquilla is certified by the Business Alliance for Secure Commerce. Statistics show that Colombian shipments certified by BASC are five times less exposed to inspection by US Customs.

C-TPAT The C-TPAT program is a trade control initiative by US Customs, also applied by the authorities in Mexico and Canada. The Port of Barranquilla complies with this initiative in order to meet the security goals specified by its Free Trade Agreement with the United States.

ENVIRONMENT The Port of Barranquilla is dedicated to running a sustainable business that preserves the environmental resources of the community. The port has adopted a sustainable approach to management that involves a responsible use of natural resources. It works hard to prevent any kind of environmental impact on the Magdalena River or the river basin. The HSSEQ Division aims to balance port-related activity with the need to preserve the quality of water, air and soil. Accordingly, the port has put in place medium-term and long-term programs for the treatment of waste

water and hazardous waste, the handling of coke and the supply of fuel. Management of the port’s water, soil and air resources is supervised by the Environment, Housing and Land Development Ministry of Colombia and by the Autonomous Regional Corporation of the Atlantic. The port aims to comply with – and improve on – the national law relating to environmental standards. The HSSEQ Division has an environmental team who are responsible for the irrigation system; the use of poly mesh tarps for shade; the planting of trees and bushes to create live barriers; and the use of sedimentation tanks to ensure the quality of waste water. The environment team also looks after the gardens and green spaces in the port estate as well caring for the ecosystem of the river – home to a variety of fauna including heron, fish, small reptiles and manatees.
