Unlocking dreams of Olympic gold Tanzanian hopefuls receive top-level coaching in England When it comes to swimming as an international sport, opportunities for top-level training are limited in Tanzania. But now, some of the nation’s most promising swimmers are receiving world-class training at one of England’s foremost swimming clubs, Saint Felix. A key figure in this project is the club’s director of swimming, Sue Purchase, who spoke to Paa.

About Saint Felix Saint Felix Swimming Club is first and foremost a swimming club that also happens to be based at a school. It’s located at Southwold in the county of Suffolk in eastern England. The club offers a full range of professional teaching and coaching, from learn-to-swim lessons for five-year-olds to training programmes at national and international level for sixth-formers.

About Sue

A talented swimmer

Sue Purchase was 10 when her family moved to Norfolk – a part of England characterised by rivers and small lakes as well as the sea – and her mother was keen to ensure that all of her children could swim. With lessons, Sue became a county swimmer, competing at national level alongside Olympic swimmers, while her brother went on to be a junior international. Sue was also a volunteer beach lifeguard. Both she and her sister became qualified swimming teachers as teenagers. After several years managing different levels of Team GB – including top medallists Rebecca Adlington and Liam Tancock – she joined Saint Felix in 2004 as its first director of swimming. Ingenious idea The idea of beehive fences was devised by conservationist Dr Lucy King, who was brought up in Somalia, Lesotho and Kenya. While working on her DPhil in Kenya in 2010 she discovered that elephants were reacting to bees, running from the location or avoiding it altogether. Dr King then came up with the ingenious idea of using beehives as a defence against crop-raiding elephants.

Elephants have sensitive skin, particularly behind the ears, inside the trunk and around the eyes – the very places where bees will aim to sting. As a result, they stay well clear of any hives they happen to stumble upon.

Dr King and her team have installed over 300 beehives at the core project site in Sagalla Hills between Tsavo East and West national parks in Kenya. Critical danger

Observing elephants

Francesca has long been devoted to the cause of saving African elephants from the menace of ivory poaching. She says a critical point was reached in 2008 when the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species (CITES) allowed four southern African nations to sell 107 tonnes of ivory stockpile, worth $15 million, to China and Japan. The idea was to flood the market and reduce the price of ivory; but it had the opposite effect, leading to a new wave of demand for ivory across Asia. Over the next three years more than 100,000 African elephants were slaughtered. Tanzania lost over 60 per cent of its elephant population and the Selous Game Reserve in the south of the country lost 90 per cent of its elephants. Corruption and poor enforcement are among the key factors that have allowed this illicit trade to flourish, but a less publicised aspect – identified by Francesca and her colleagues – is the role played by local communities in aiding and abetting the poachers. This has arisen from so-called ‘human-elephant conflict’ – the situation whereby the elephants regularly eat and destroy the crops that sustain the local communities. Through a combination of bribes and intimidation, poachers have engaged local farmers to help them track and kill their prey. 22

Paa Tanzania

The latest buzz… Wild Survivors trustee in California, Martyn Griffiths, has developed an audio deterrent, the Buzz Box, which emits the sound of angry bees when triggered by a PIR infra-red sensor. These inexpensive, light-weight devices will be donated to the villages where the charity operates and will also be available for purchase by owners of large farms.

Fund-raising is a major challenge for a small and relatively new organisation like Wild Survivors. “We receive the majority of our donations through our website*,” says Fran. “Donors sponsor a beehive, with their name soon to be painted on the hive and regular updates about the programme. There are also opportunities to sponsor a farmer’s bee-keeping training and equipment.” The charity is also looking for funds to build its own Education and Bee Centre, where villagers will be able to train in beekeeping and honey harvesting and learn more about wildlife conservation. University tips

It’s a degree more fun than you might think If you’re heading off to university soon, or thinking about applying for the next academic year, the whole experience can seem quite daunting, with a brandnew experience lurking just around the corner. With this in mind, Paa has put together a rough guide on how to survive your first year of university – with some tips for parents, too!

1

Make new friends

elsewhere with a new experience

Whether you’re in university accommodation or living elsewhere, you will come

into contact with many different people, most of whom you have never met before but may possibly see again. University is a good way

ahead of them.

2

Tips for parents

University

Work hard, play hard

Waving goodbye to your child as they head out on their own can be an emotional time. Whether they’re staying local for university, moving away to Dar or Arusha or even going abroad to study, it will doubtless be a big change for the whole family – but one that will hopefully bring benefits, too. Even though you’ll be sad to see them go, know that they will only be a phone call away. Having said that, remember they need time to settle in and make new friends, so resist the temptation to call three times a day, every day! University can be a daunting experience for many students, so being there to support your newly independent son or daughter will help them through the tough times, whether it’s a shoulder to cry on or simply doing their laundry when they return for the holidays.

Despite its name and intimidating appearance, the whale shark is a gentle giant of the sea. Important Information

Dos and Don’ts in Aviation DOS

The rate of people using air transport has largely increased over the past few years. For some people, flying is so common that they think they know regulations and procedures by heart. For others, this is the first time flying with us. Even if you are a frequent flyer, it’s good to be vigilant, pay attention and adhere to safety instructions from your crew, especially during the critical phases of a flight – take off, landing, descent and climb. Sometimes it may seem like a chore, with the processes and procedures that passengers encounter, from airport and airline security to check in, boarding and inflight procedures. Here are some DOS and DON’TS to help make your travel easy and problem-free for you and other passengers. Wishing you a lovely Precision Air experience. You are why we fly. Anna Moshy Cabin Safety Officer, Precision Air Tz

• Ask for a Precision Air medical form, or download one from our website, if you, or a passenger you are travelling with, has a medical condition or is pregnant. Some medical conditions restrict passengers from travelling with us. This medical form has to be stamped and signed by a medical doctor and shown to check-in personnel. This will help facilitate travel for passengers with medical cases who need special attention. Declare all and any medical cases while booking your ticket and at the check-in counter. • Be at the airport at least two and half hours before your flight for check in. The earlier your are at the airport the better, as it will help to avoid a last-minute rush that may lead to forgetting items such as passports, electronics and other travel documents. You could even end up missing your flight. Precision Air check-in counter closes 40 minutes prior to departure for domestic flights and one hour for international flights. • Read the list of prohibited items while going through your first security check and listen for announcements at the airport. These will help you understand what items need to be put in checked luggage and which items are prohibited from all flights. Alternatively, call our customer service representatives before your flight and enquire about prohibited items. These items include: liquids, gels and aerosols from 100 ml; matches/lighters; and explosives. Sharp objects such as needles and scissors should not be in carry-on bags. • At the check-in counter, confirm with the staff if your carry-on bag will fit in the stowage facilities in the aircraft. All oversized bags will still be tagged and checked in. For safety reasons, oversized bags are not allowed in the cabin. • Passengers are only allowed two pieces of hand luggage: a bag or suitcase and one personal item i.e. a purse or laptop bag. Kindly note that your hand luggage is your responsibility – be sure to carry a bag that you can manage.

• While onboard a flight, first ensure your hand luggage is stowed properly in the overhead locker or under the seat in front of you. If your bag does not fit in these two places, it will be taken and be checked in. While stowing away your bag, be sure to not block others from boarding and allow other passengers through if you are still sorting out what you need to sit with. This will facilitate boarding and save time. • Familiarise yourself with the aircraft, notice the location of emergency exit and read the safety card that is found in the seat pocket. Pay attention to safety announcements on board, even if you are a regular traveller. The location of emergency exits and emergency equipment such as life jackets may differ depending on the aircraft type. • Keep your seat belt fastened during the flight, even if the seatbelt signs have been switched off. There are cases of air turbulence that have caused more damage than most because they are unexpected and can prove fatal. If you are travelling with kids, have them strapped in during the flight for their own safety. NB: Seatbelts must be fastened during take off, landing, descent, climb, taxiing in and out and whenever the Captain has switched on the seatbelt signs. • Ensure your seat is in an upright position for takeoff and landing. This will facilitate deplaning the aircraft in case of emergencies. A reclined seat is likely to block other passengers from deplaning quickly. Most emergencies in aviation occur during takeoff and landing and as such, during this time the crew will prepare for such scenarios during these phases. • Ensure your window shades are open, which is important for two reasons: firstly, if an accident occurs during takeoff or landing, there is more visual access to the outside to know what’s going on at all times; secondly, in case of emergencies, open window shades will help passengers know which side to evacuate from.

DONT’S • Precision Air is a certified IATA member. Under the IATA guideline, a passenger is deemed to have committed an offence onboard the aircraft if there is an assault, intimidation or threat, whether physical or verbal, against a crew member. This includes all types of threats, such as statements related to a bomb threat or carrying of a weapon onboard. It is also an offence if the passenger’s action interferes with the performance of duties of the crew. A passenger who refuses to follow safety instructions given by the cabin crew member, is also committing an offence. • Smoking in the lavatory or elsewhere in the aircraft also constitutes as unruly behaviour, as well as property destruction, intoxication due to alcoholic or narcotics and tampering with the plane’s safety-related devices, including emergency exits and life jackets. • Passengers and airport visitors are warned that all threats and comments made about carrying of weapons or explosives – whether intended as a joke or not – will be taken seriously and may result in refusal to board the aircraft and prosecution.

USE OF ELECTRONIC GADGETS • Mobile phones and many electronic gadgets, when not in Flight Mode, will continue to transmit electromagnetic signals as the device attempts to maintain contact with a communications network. These signals are commanded to transmit at the devices’ maximum power to maintain the connection between the device and network. The cumulative effect of a large number of devices being used simultaneously when not in Flight Mode, particularly during the critical phases of flight, remains a serious concern.

for emergencies during take off and landing, as these are the phases where most aviation accidents occur. Passengers’ cooperation will save time and lives. Laptops must be stowed away for take off and landing, but may be used at cruise level. • Safety in aviation is paramount and doesn’t rest with the airline or crew. Passengers also play a critical role.

• Passengers should always assume that they cannot make calls or send texts, or use any other wireless communication, on board the aircraft at any stage of their flight, unless informed otherwise. • Use of headsets during take off and landing is not permitted because in case of emergencies you will not hear commands from the crew. It is crews’ duty to ensure the cabin is prepared

• Do not pack sharp object such as knives, scissors, corkscrews or knitting needles in your hand luggage. • Refusal to submit to inspection will result in prohibition to board aircraft. • Do not leave any baggage unattended in public areas. All such baggage will be treated as suspicious.

Welcome Aboard

Safety and well-being onboard PASSENGER SAFETY Precision Air takes passenger safety very seriously. Aviation safety isn’t just the pilot’s or the cabin crew’s job – it takes all of us. It is easy for our natural sense of caution to be dulled in our modern environment, where things don't go wrong very often. Whether in the air or on the ground, your life, and the lives of your family members could someday be saved if you make it a point, in every situation, to create a mental plan of action in case of emergency. Here are some important tips to help you enjoy your travel experience with Precision Air – in flight and around the airport.

EXIT ROW SEAT A passenger allocated emergency exit seat; A. Must be both willing and physically able to open the exit doors in an emergency. B. Must completely understand the printed emergency evacuation techniques. C. Must be 16 years old and above.

PAY ATTENTION TO PREFLIGHT BRIEFING Although the information seems repetitious, the locations of the closest emergency exits may be different depending on the aircraft that you fly on and the seat you are in.

CARRY ON BAGGAGE There are strict rules about what you can bring on board an aircraft. Because:

Carry-on bags must be small enough to fit under the seat in front of you or in the overhead bins. Please confirm with Precision Air rules before your travel, to avoid delays. *Remember: All carry-on baggage must be left behind in an evacuation.

SAFETY ONBOARD Boarding and leaving an aircraft requires your full attention. As you move to and from the aircraft, you may be in a busy area with many other passengers and cargo, moving vehicles, other aircraft, slippery walkways and/or stairs.

RESPECT YOUR CREW AND FELLOW PASSENGERS Everyone has the right to safe and secure travel. That is why Precision Air employees and aviation authority will not tolerate any behaviour that interferes with the flight or puts the safety of passengers and crew at risk.

SEATBELTS Seatbelts must be fastened during take off, landing, during turbulence, and anytime the crew deem it necessary. Keeping the belt on when you are seated provides that extra protection you might need in case of emergency. If you are responsible for an infant or a child, you must first ensure that your own seatbelt is properly fastened, then secure the child and if its an infant secure the child’s or the infant’s restraints.

A. Not all aircraft have space to store your carry-on baggage.

Important note: There are a number of events involving air turbulence that highlight the importance of keeping seatbelts fastened throughout the flight.

B. In an accident, baggage in the aisles makes it harder to get out of the aircraft quickly.

Though rare, in-flight turbulence is the leading cause of injuries to both passengers and the crew.

Paa Tanzania

It’s good practice to keep your seatbelts fastened even when the seatbelt signs are not on.

MEDICAL CASES AND PREGNANCIES If you have a medical case and may need assistance during your travel, kindly enquire from Precision Air offices or agents for procedures before your flight. If you are pregnant, you will need to fill a Precision Air medical form, to be signed by your doctor to confirm that you are OK for travel. For further details kindly ask while booking your ticket from our sales offices and/or customer services.

PORTABLE ELECTRONIC DEVICES Use of portable electronic devices such as mobile phones, laptops, tablets, mp4 players, iPads, etc are not allowed during take off, landing, taxiing, descent and climb. Precision Air prohibits the use of some electronic devices during flight, because they emit signals that can interfere with the aircraft's instrumentation. Some of the items prohibited include cell phones, radios,remote-controlled games/toys, laser pointers, iPads or tablets that transmits frequencies, portable printers, walkie talkies, scanners, laptops and other items need to be stowed away for these phases of the flight to avoid injuries in case of an emergency.
