WELCOME TO REMARKABLE RWANDA!

RWANDA CHAMBER OF TOURISM

The land of a thousand hills and a million opportunities – and the first sleeve sponsor of Arsenal Football Club in the English Premier League. If that doesn’t get you booking your next flight to Kigali, there’s still more to explore in this guide.

Rwanda Chamber of Tourism is one of 10 professional chambers under the umbrella of the Private Sector Federation (PSF), which seeks to promote and represent the interests of Rwanda’s business community.

Rwanda lies just south of the equator in the heart of Africa. Our nation’s capital, Kigali – famously one of the greenest cities in Africa – is served by seven airlines linking Rwanda with the rest of the world. Our national carrier, RwandAir, is one of Africa’s fastestgrowing airlines, flying to 26 destinations in Africa, Europe, the Middle East and Asia.

The chamber was established in 2006 with a mandate to enhance business opportunities through effective lobbying, advocacy and capacity building on behalf of the nation’s tourism and hospitality sector.

As well as being the safest country in Africa – and the fifth-safest in the world – Rwanda is ranked 29th globally by the World Bank’s Doing Business 2019 report.

Through effective advocacy, and by helping to provide an enabling business environment for its members, the chamber aims to ensure that businesses in the tourism sector are profitable and sustainable, thus contributing to the general prosperity of the nation.

Rwanda is open to everyone as a visa is issued on arrival for all citizens of the world. In the space of a week it is possible to experience many highlights thanks to the relatively compact size of our country. With a population of slightly over 12 million, Rwanda is geographically small and one of the world’s most densely populated countries. Rwanda is home to some of Africa’s most beautiful scenic views and is one of three countries in the world where visitors can see the majestic mountain gorillas – no longer critically endangered thanks to national conservation efforts. Our country is known not only for its dark history during the 1994 genocide against the Tutsi, but also for its recovery, resilience and successful efforts to fight corruption. This

year marks a historic milestone: it is 25 years since the genocide that claimed over a million lives in just 100 days. It also marks 25 years of a remarkable journey by a nation with strong and visionary leadership that chose to stay united and work together to rebuild the broken pieces into one. Tourism – one of the key economic sectors affected by our country’s tragic history – has been growing steadily over the past 10 to 15 years thanks to the government’s Vision 2020, a development blueprint which identified tourism as a priority sector and a major contributor to the eradication of poverty. The framework has been developed in an all-inclusive way. It has been a yardstick for the development and growth of the nation’s economy. The government has made critical efforts to restructure tourism development through its agency, the Rwanda Development Board, and to fast-track tourism investments, growth and development. This was done by attracting investors, devising proactive policies and a regulatory framework and instituting a private-public partnership to sustain the growth and development of tourism. As a result of this partnership, and the implementation of key policies and laws, there has been a very significant growth in tourism. According to the World Travel & Tourism Council’s 2018 report, the industry contributed RWF 383 billion (US$ 463.6 million) or 5.2 per cent of gross domestic product in 2017 and this was forecast to rise by 6.7 per cent from 2018 to 2028 to RWF 731.6 billion (US$ 885.5 million), 5.0 of total gross domestic product in 2028. The industry is credited for its direct and indirect contribution to employment and for helping to improve the quality of life of local people. In 2017 tourism directly supported 132,000 jobs (4.4 per cent of total employment). This is expected to rise by 2.9 per cent to 181,000 jobs to 181,000 jobs (4.2 per cent of total employment) in 2028. Indirectly, the total contribution of travel and tourism to employment was 11.1 per cent of total employment (333,500 jobs) and is expected to rise by 3.1 per cent per annum to 469,000 jobs in 2028 (10.8 per cent of the total). There are many new incentives to visit Rwanda. They include the reintroduction of lions and rhinos to Akagera National Park, the opening of the new Gishwati-Mukura National Park, the state-of-the-art Bugesera International Airport project and improved facilities for MICE tourism. As a result, there is every sign that tourism arrivals and revenues will grow still further. And the impact of tourism on the economy and the socioeconomic welfare of citizens will be immense. I wish you an enjoyable visit to Rwanda, whether it is your first visit or you are returning for more thrilling experiences. NATION’S CAPITAL HAS EVERYTHING YOU NEED

WHEN ALL THE WILD ADVENTURE IS DONE, KIGALI IS THE PERFECT PLACE TO RELAX AND UNWIND

T

here is an old adage that “God spends the day elsewhere and sleeps in Rwanda” and there can be few urban settings more appealing than peaceful Kigali with its panorama of beautiful hills and its reputation as one of the cleanest cities in the world. From its warm and welcoming people, through its comfortable and reliable public transport system using tap-and-go cards, to private car hire courtesy of Volkswagen’s mobility transport system, Kigali is an ideal city for visitors. The city offers an excellent choice of accommodation – from five-star hotels like the Radisson Blu, the Kigali Serena and The Retreat, through four-star properties such as the Hotel des Mille Collines and the 2000 Hotel Downtown Kigali, to a wide selection of budget hotels. For exercise and sport, Kigali has dozens of fitness centres, sauna and massage facilities as well as tennis courts and a new golf course. If you time your visit right, you can take advantage of Car Free Day, on the first Sunday of each month, when Kigalians leave their cars at home and focus on sport and exercise.

There is no lack of shops in Kigali, including two large commercial malls, the Kigali Heights and the Kigali Business Centre, with regional chain of restaurants and coffee shops, pizzerias, wine bars and pubs as well as local and regional clothing outlets. The central business district has a car-free zone with a range of artisanal stands.

EATING, DRINKING AND CLUBBING With its huge choice of bars, pubs, coffee shops, restaurants and nightclubs, Kigali is a happening place in the evenings as well as the daytime. Restaurants such as Heaven, Beirut and Pili Pili, Century Park Chinese Restaurant and Mamba Club have play parks and other facilities for children to ensure a family-friendly atmosphere. Other restaurants of note include the pizzeria Sole Luna as well as Caiman (for roast meat) and Chez Lando (African and European cuisine). If you like dancing and discotheques, there’s a good choice of clubs such as Bougainvilla, Cocobean, Envy, 514 Club and People, while the profusion of bars and pubs includes Choma’d, Dolce Bar, Fuchsia, Riders Lounge and Sundowner.

BUSINESS-FRIENDLY CITY

CONVENTION CENTRE A jewel in the city’s crown, in terms of luxury accommodation and space for top meetings, is the Radisson Blu Hotel & Convention Centre, opened in 2016. With its impressive hilltop location, set in lush gardens, the hotel has 291 rooms and suites along with first-rate amenities and excellent service. The hotel also has 650 parking bays.

Rwanda has undertaken key reforms in the business regulatory framework to create a business-friendly environment. In fact, Rwanda is ranked 29th globally and 2nd (after Mauritius) as the easiest place to do business by the World Bank's 2019 Doing Business Report.

The convention centre has 18 meeting rooms, including a state-of-the-art auditorium with capacity for over 5,000 attendees. This provides a sophisticated venue for weddings and other social events. The centre has been used to host major events such as the African Union Heads of State Summit.

Rwanda has a well organised and efficient public sector, thus helping to minimise the time and effort involved in starting a new business or expanding an existing one.

Kigali itself is one of the cleanest cities in the world, while the low level of traffic makes it easy to get around and move between meetings.

Until recently, Rwanda has tended to be overlooked as a profitable and viable option for doing business. It doesn’t have the kind of multinationals that operate in Kenya, Nigeria and South Africa.

VOLCANOES NATIONAL PARK

A MAGICAL WORLD OF GORILLAS AND MOUNTAIN PEAKS A

s its name suggests, Volcanoes National Park, in the far north-west of Rwanda, is an area of magnificent volcanic peaks.

This park is famously home to the mountain gorilla, with about half of the world’s population of the primate living within its boundaries. In January 2018 the African Wildlife Foundation (AWF) donated an additional 27.8 hectares on the outskirts of the park to its existing 16,000 hectares in order to expand the habitat of the rare but thriving mountain gorillas and other wildlife. As a result of conservation efforts, the total population of mountain gorillas is up by well over a quarter since 2010. The Rwanda Development Board (RDB) says the expansion of the Volcanoes National Park is a long-term project to accommodate the evergrowing number of gorillas, which has stretched the capacity of the park. The size of the park had decreased by 54 percent since 1925 but thanks to Rwanda’s ongoing investment in conservation it has begun to expand again. This trend continues, with plans to buy a more significant area of land from residents on the outskirts of the park. Over the past nine years, mountain gorilla conservation – and the resulting tourism – have brought US$ 107 million to the national coffers. A mosaic of montane ecosystems, the park contains both evergreen and bamboo forest as well as open grassland, swamp and heath.

ACCOMMODATION There is a wide choice of high-end, mid-range and low-cost accommodation closely located to the park. The newly established and luxurious Bisate Lodge has six en-suite bedrooms built into the hills. Its design is inspired by the Rwandan traditional building. Amakoro Lodge is a modern boutique property, strategically located in the foothills of Mount Sabyinyo. Five Volcanoes Boutique Hotel is one of the hotels on the road to the park's head quarters. Virunga Lodge is a hilltop hotel with fine views of lakes Burera and Ruhondo and the national park. Sabyinyo Silverback Lodge is located close to the park headquarters and consists of private cottages set in spacious gardens with magnificent views. The lively town of Musanze, 13 km from the park headquarters, offers a wide range of hotels and guesthouses to suit all budgets. There is a good choice of places to eat as well as markets and artisanal trades. There are also a variety of mid-range properties in Musanze town.

GORILLA NAMING Every year since 2005 RDB has held a conservation event called Kwita Izina in the national park that involves the naming of a baby gorilla. This colourful event is customarily held in Kinigi on the first Friday in September. It brings together communities around the park who take part in the naming of the infant apes.

PERMITS

DAY TRIP

Day permits are available to visit the 10 habituated families of gorillas living in the park. Permits cost US$ 1,500 per person and only 80 permits are available each day.

Many tourists make their base in nearby Musanze town, with its selection of hotels, lodges and guesthouses, but the park is just two hours from Kigali on paved roads. Visitors can thus make a day trip to the park, albeit a long and tiring one.

The Volcanoes National Park borders Virunga National Park, in the Democratic Republic of Congo, and Mgahinga Gorilla National Park, in Uganda, and mountain gorillas often roam between all three. In order to see the gorillas, visitors go on an exhilarating trek through the cultivated foothills of the volcanoes before entering the national park with its thick rainforest. The forest cover is alive with colourful birds, while the volcanic peaks make an impressive backdrop. There’s a chance to spot the rare golden monkey, too, and this can make an interesting second-day trip. The forest is also home to small populations of hard-to-spot buffalo as well as black-fronted duiker, spotted hyena and bushbuck.

HABITAT For those keenly interested in gorillas and the campaign to protect their habitat, another day hiking trip is to Karisoke peak to see the grave of zoologist Dian Fossey, who died in 1985. At Karisoke, you will soon (expected to be completed in 2021) be able to visit the Ellen DeGeneres Campus of the Dian Fossey Gorilla Fund. This facility whas been set up to allow Ellen to carry on Dian’s work by giving the centre a permanent home in Rwanda to protect and speak up for the world’s most vulnerable animals and wildlife. The area contains 200 recorded bird species.

At Musanze (previously known as Ruhengeri), there is a natural bridge composed of solidified lava that were formed 62 million years ago, is a reminder of the volcanic activity that gave the area its name. Here you will also find the Musanze Caves. The Volcanoes National Park also contains the Buhanga Eco-Park – despite its small size, this serene forest packs a great deal of biological and cultural significance. Meditative trails cross through towering trees home to a variety of bird and butterfly species. The location is built on an ancient sacred site that was used for coronation rituals of Rwandan kings. Close to Musanze town are the lakes of Burera, Ruhondo and Karago.

AKAGERA NATIONAL PARK

HISTORIC WILDLIFE AREA RECOVERS ITS GREATNESS AKAGERA IS THE LARGEST OF RWANDA’S NATIONAL PARKS, WITH AN AREA OF 2,500 SQ KM

T

his relatively low-lying national park is located in north-east Rwanda on the border with Tanzania. It has a terrain very different from the densely cultivated hills that characterise much of Rwanda. The park is made up of three distinct ecosystems: the lakes (Shakani and Ihéma) and swamps along the course of the Akagera River; classic African savanna with trademark acacia trees and open-plains big game in the style of better-known parks in Kenya and Tanzania; and breathtaking mountain landscapes. In former times, Akagera was one of the great East African national parks; but war and the consequent poaching of game have taken their toll. Nevertheless, the park is well managed now and animal numbers are starting to recover. Initial plans to restock the park have resulted in one of the most significant events in Rwanda’s conservation history. Since 2010 the park, with its rich wildlife, has been managed jointly by the Rwanda Development Board and African Parks, a nongovernmental organisation focused on conservation with its headquarters in Johannesburg. This partnership between African Parks and the RDB, along with funding from the Howard G. Buffett Foundation, has led to the relocation of 18 eastern black rhinos and nine lions from South Africa to Rwanda after 10 to 15 years of absence. The first group of seven lions

12

returned to Akagera in 2015 while the rhinos, along with two male lions, arrived in 2017. Akagera is now officially home to Africa’s Big Five: lion, leopard, rhinoceros, elephant and Cape buffalo. This underlines the country’s successful efforts to restore its ecosystems and enhance its tourism sector. Akagera National Park is on record as having the largest protected wetland in Central Africa as well as the last remaining refuge in Rwanda for savannahadapted species. Given the swampy nature of much of the park’s terrain, it’s no surprise to find large pods of hippo as well as giant crocodile inhabiting the area.

WILDLIFE In addition to small herds of elephant and buffalo, Akagera is home to leopard, spotted hyena and the occasional lion. The park also contains giraffe and zebra and more than a dozen species of antelope, including the world’s largest, the Cape eland, as well as impala, bushbuck, oribi and topi. Akagera also lays claim to over 500 species of birds including two endangered waterbirds: the papyrus gonolek and the much-photographed shoebill stork. The endangered Grauer’s swamp warbler and grey crowned crane were also recently relocated to Akagera.

ACCOMMODATION

EPIC HOTEL AND SUITES

CULTURAL TOURS

Accommodation in Akagera National Park has almost tripled since 2009 with the introduction of the awardwinning properties such as Ruzizi Tented Lodge and Karenge Bush Camp in addition to the long-standing 60-room Akagera Game Lodge. Visitors can also choose a bush camp experience at select periods or go camping at specific sites.

Located away from the park, EPIC Hotel & Suites, on the outskirts of Nyagatare town, is recommended as a place to stay. All rooms are air conditioned with flat-screen TV with satellite channels and a private bathroom with bidet. Some rooms come with a balcony.

Freelance community guides are on hand to organise cultural tours for park visitors in a partnership between the park and local communities. Tours include food and festivities, arts and crafts, brewing, beekeeping and cattle rearing. Each tour provides an insight into life in the communities around the park.

Poaching has been effectively halted and electric fencing has been installed. This has aided the continuing expansion of the park’s key wildlife populations. Approximatley 45,000 tourists now visit Akagera each year. The park has finally regained its greatness and there has never been a better time to visit.

Guests can enjoy a buffet or a full English or Irish breakfast. The in-house restaurant serves Asian and American cuisine. The hotel has a business centre; a wellness area with a sauna, fitness centre and hammam; and a children’s playground. There is also an outdoor pool and facilities for tennis. Car hire and sightseeing trips can be organised by the hotel.

Visitors can try their hand at milking a cow, making an Imigongo painting, sampling honey on the comb, helping to prepare a local meal or joining in a traditional Rwandan dance. Each of the cultural tours is three hours long and costs just US$ 20 per person for a minimum of three people.

Other facilities include free Wi-Fi, express check-in and check-out, concierge services and a 24-hour front desk.

NYUNGWE FOREST NATIONAL PARK

REACHING HEIGHTS OF NATURAL WONDER AND DIVERSITY T

he high-altitude Nyungwe Forest National Park in south-east Rwanda is the largest expanse of montane forest in East or Central Africa.

Flowering plants include the giant lobelia and many colourful orchids (over 100 species).

With altitudes ranging from 1,600 metres to 2,950 metres, the park covers 970 sq km and is one of the richest areas in Africa in terms of endemic species.

Nyungwe is one of Africa’s oldest forests and the park receives up to 2,000 mm of rain each year.

PRIMATES

NYUNGWE TRAILS

There are thought to be 86 species of mammal in the park. Primates include the owl-faced, mona, blue, golden, red-tailed and vervet monkeys, as well as grey-cheeked mangabey, black-and-white colobus (of which there are troops well over 400 strong), eastern needle-clawed galago, greater bushbaby, dwarf galago, olive baboon and chimpanzee, of which there are estimated to be over 1,000 living in the forest.

Visitors have access to a 130 km network of well-kept walking trails through the forest with viewing points and waterfalls.

The forest is best known for its amazing diversity of flora, with over 250 species of tree, and for its 13 varieties of primate.

Nyungwe is also considered the best birding destination in Rwanda with over 320 bird species, of which at least 29 are unique to the montane forest environment of the Albertine Rift. In particular, birdwatchers

The park can also be visited as part of a day trip from the nearby towns of Huye and Rusizi. There is a choice of accommodation that includes the upmarket One & Only Nyungwe House (formerly Nyungwe Forest Lodge) and mid-range properties such as the Nyungwe Top View Hill Hotel as well as the Gisakura Guest House, about 1 km from the forest, run by the Gisakura Tea Estate.

GISHWATI-MUKURA NATIONAL PARK

SCENERY AND WILDLIFE APLENTY IN NEWLY OPENED AREA G

ishwati-Mukura, in north-western Rwanda, is the country’s youngest national park, due to open for tourism in 2020. Formerly a reserve forest, Gishwati-Mukura was badly depleted some years ago due to encroachment, illegal mining in the mineralrich forest and livestock farming. With the help of a US$ 9.5 million grant in 2014 from the World Bank’s Global Environment Facility, the government of Rwanda moved to restore and conserve the two forests: Gishwati and Mukura, which has quickly become a success story for the national conservation movement. The park’s attractions include wildlife and game viewing, trekking and hiking, landscape and nature viewing, adventure and sports activities, community-based tourism, culture and heritage.

TOURISM ZONES The Umushwati Tourism Zone is at the park’s main entrance, the north-west gate. Within the zone are administrative offices and a visitor centre. There is also a community complex and transit centre for visitors travelling between Volcanoes National Park in the north and Nyungwe Forest National Park in the south. Tourist attractions in this area include hiking and biking trails, both inside and outside the forest, wildlife viewing, tea tours and community-based experiences. The Bitenga/Sebeya Tourism Zone at the north-east gate features a canopy

viewpoint, a hill trail, a riverside trail, community farms and tea plantations. The Rucanzogera Tourism Zone at the South Gate features a visitor centre and a community-integrated complex as well as a second base camp for the riverside trail. Also in the zone is a centre for adventure activities with waterfalls and a bike trail that links the park with the Lake Kivu trails. A recent biodiversity survey has noted 492 indigenous plant species and 22 mammal species including golden monkeys, eastern chimpanzees and mountain monkeys. The park also has 126 species of birds, including white-headed vultures and crowned eagles, and 23 species of amphibians.

In the Gishwati area, key attractions are the Gishwati Forest, the rivers Pfunda and Sebeya, the waterfall trail, the Umushwati trees trail, the Rushubi tea trail and the Gishwati community trail. The Mukura area includes Mukura Forest, the rivers Satinsyi, Rucanzogera and Secoko, the Mukura bike trail, the Rucanzogera trail and the Mukura Community Trail. The two forest areas are linked by a corridor with river sources and waterfalls.

THE KIVU BELT

THE CREST OF ADVENTURE V

ery popular among Rwandans as a weekend destination, Lake Kivu, shared by Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of Congo, is one of Africa’s truly great lakes, covering an area of some 2,700 sq km. Situated 1,460 metres above sea level, Lake Kivu has several claims to fame, both natural and man-made. Geographically, it is the world’s 15th-deepest lake, with a depth of 480 metres, while Idjwi, the island located in the center of the lake, is the world’s 10th-largest inland island. A spectacular man-made feature of Lake Kivu is the KivuWatt Power Station, which extracts methane gas from the lake to generate electricity – one of the first energy plants of its kind. There are three resort towns on the Rwandan side of the lake: Rubavu, Karongi and Rusizi. All three are ideal places for water-based activities such as swimming or kayaking. From Rubavu visitors can take boat trips to the nearby Islands or even across into Goma to visit Gishamwana Island and its coffee plantation.

EXCURSIONS Rubavu, on the north side of Lake Kivu, is the main centre for excursions into Volcanoes National Park. It also provides many opportunities for water sports, kayaking and boat trips on the lake.

KARONGI The pretty lakeside town of Karongi is home to a wide variety of exotic birds and colourful plants.

16

R WA N DA C H A M B E R O F T O U R I S M

The former colonial resort looks over a memorable scene of volcanic islands with colourful fishing boats in the foreground. Boat trips can be arranged from Kibuye to Napoleon, famous for its fruit bats, and to Amahoro Island.

RUSIZI At the border town of Cyangugu, on the southern shores of the lake, close to the Democratic Republic of Congo, tourists can visit the exciting Kaboza and Nyenji grottoes and the thermal waters at Nyakabuye. Rugege Forest, located nearby, is home to many rare and exotic species of wildlife. There is a fascinating selection of birdlife around the lake, too, including pelicans, grey-crowned cranes and the small malachite kingfisher. The lakeside towns are linked by a scenic road that winds through plantain fields and misty rainforests, with splendid views over the lake below. The three main towns are also linked by a regular charter boat service on the Rwandan side of the lake.

CONGO NILE TRAIL The Congo Nile Trail offers the adventurous visitor a great way to experience Rwanda. It consists of 227 km (141 miles) of beautiful scenery, with rolling hills and crystal-clear water. The trail leads through the forests of Nyungwe National Park and along scenic dirt roads beside Lake Kivu. It goes from Rubavu, through Rutsiro and the districts of Karongi and Nyamasheke, ending in Rusizi District. The whole trek can be completed by hikers in 10 days. Visitors who don’t have time to cover the whole trail can choose to tackle a section of the route. The Congo Nile Trail can be covered by bike in five days. For an authentic Rwandan offroad adventure, the Congo Nile Trail experience is hard to beat.

HOTELS The popularity of the lake has led to a growing number of upmarket hotels and comfortable guesthouses that have been opened in recent years. Hotels include four-star properties with luxury accommodation, helping to uphold Rwanda’s reputation as a top-quality destination. Many of the quality hotels have their own boats available for lake trips. Alternatively, visitors should have no difficulty finding a boat operating from the three main lakeside towns.

SOUTHERN PROVINCE

CULTURAL HUB OF RWANDA

T

he scenically attractive Southern Province of Rwanda has a long and colourful history and is widely regarded as a major centre of culture.

HUYE The city of Huye, formerly known as Butare, is an oasis of Rwandan cultural and colonial history. Originally called Astrida, the city was established in the 1920s by the Belgian colonial rulers, who named it in honour of their queen. The name was changed after Rwanda became a republic in 1962. Today, Huye is the academic hub of Rwanda, home to the University of Rwanda’s largest campus as well as training schools, and the National Institute of Scientific Research.

18

R WA N DA C H A M B E R O F T O U R I S M

Huye is also a religious centre. The nation’s first Catholic mission was established in 1900 only a short distance away at Save Hill, while the city is home to Our Lady of Wisdom Cathedral and other churches. A ‘must see’ for visitors is the Ruhande Arboretum, a botanical garden established in 1933 on Ruhande Hill, containing both indigenous and exotic flora. Also worth visiting, is the Ethnographic Museum, with displays of traditional artefacts and historic photographs that document Rwanda’s transition into a modern state. Another attraction is the Huye Stadium, home ground of Mukura Victory Sports FC.

MOUNT HUYE Mount Huye, near Huye, gives its name to the surrounding Huye District. The mountain

is a key source of mineral water, supplying both the Huye brand of bottled water, sold nationwide, and the nearby Maraba Fair Trade coffee plant, whose washing station receives Huye water via a pipeline installed in 2002.

KING’S PALACE MUSEUM Representing an outstanding example of traditional Rwandan architecture is the King’s Palace Museum at Rukari in Nyanza District. This reconstruction of the royal residence is a thatched and beautifully crafted dwelling shaped like a beehive. Nyanza was formerly the heart of Rwanda and the site of battles and power struggles. In previous times, the royal court had moved between different locations. When it eventually settled in one place, Nyanza

Rwanda ceased to be a monarchy in 1962 when it gained independence from colonial rule. But the breeding of Inyambo cattle has continued under the Rwanda Agriculture Board.

GIKONGORO The city of Gikongoro, in Nyamagabe District, has grown in recent years, with construction of new buildings. This is the gateway to Nyungwe Forest, a large area of montane rainforest with many species of monkeys and chimpanzees.

KANKAZI SITE At the Kankazi Site in Muhanga you can visit the remains of a royal household. The most famous resident was the 20th-century Queen Kankazi, who had clean water pumped to her property (the remains of her water collection centre are still there). The queen would allow people living near her palace to come and draw water for free. With her reputation for humility, bravery and acts of social responsibility, Queen Kankazi was one of the most important women leaders in the country’s history – a beacon of hope and courage for girls today who aspire to become leaders. There are plans by the government to redevelop the site into a museum, where visitors will be able to follow her story and understand what she did for the Rwandan people.

The Rock of Kamegeri in Ruhango District is the setting for a colourful folk tale. It was here, according to legend, that an early Rwandan king ordered one of his favourite servants, Kamegeri, to be burned to death on a red-hot rock because Kamegeri had had the temerity to suggest the very same fate be meted out to criminals. It was not up to servants to give him such advice, the king decided.

Stephanie Braconnier / Shutterstock.com

Today, visitors can see long-horned Inyambo cattle, descended from the king’s herd, which are still reared and looked after in the vicinity of the palace. These elegant cows once played a key part in royal ceremonies in honour of the king. They were decorated with jewellery and trained to follow their trainer’s songs and movements.

ROCK OF KAMEGERI

VANTAGE POINT The beautiful hill of Ijuru rya Kamonyi offers wonderful views of Bugesera town, Ngororero District and Mount Kigali. In former times this hill was used as a strategic base and look-out point for the army.

MARABA COFFEE Maraba coffee is grown in the Maraba area of southern Rwanda. The coffee plants, featuring a Bourbon variety of Coffea Arabica, grow at high altitude on fertile volcanic soils. The fruit is hand picked, mostly during the rainy season between March and May, and taken to a washing station in Maraba, where the coffee beans are extracted and dried.

was the obvious choice. The capital of the kingdom had up to 2,000 inhabitants who lived in huts built using the same methods as seen here.

The Southern Province embraces the former provinces of Huye, Gikongoro and Gitarama and is divided into the districts of Gisagara, Gitarama, Huye, Kamonyi Nyamagabe, Nyanza and Nyaruguru. The provincial capital is Nyanza.

During the 100 days of the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi, the hotel became a symbol of hope as it sheltered a terrified crowd of about 2,000 people. The hotel opened its doors to citizens fearing for their lives. Some gave birth, others got married but, most importantly, all were given the chance to have a future. Today, the hotel is known not only for its legacy of hospitality but also as an icon of

Rwanda’s history! The hotel also encourages sustainable travel by promoting local art and Rwandan culture. Decorative art pieces are displayed at the hotel for sale and a Cultural Night held every Friday evening to provide guests with a taste of Rwandan culture by means of live performances of song and dance.

BRUSSELS AIRLINES

ENJOY THE BEST OF BELGIUM – EN ROUTE TO AFRICA B

russels Airlines is Belgium’s leading airline, connecting the ‘capital of Europe’ with over 100 destinations, including 23 countries in Africa – the continent which the company regards as its second home. Founded in 2002 and wholly owned by Deutsche Lufthansa AG, the airline is part of the Lufthansa Group and a member of Star Alliance. With its distinctively Belgian image and on-board drinks and cuisine, Brussels Airlines regards itself as an ambassador for Belgium and its national culture.

DESTINATIONS African countries (and destinations) served by Brussels Airlines are: Angola (Luanda), Benin (Cotonou), Burkina Faso (Ouagadougougu), Burundi (Bujumbura), Cameroon (Douala and Yaoundé), Cape Verde (Boa Vista and Sal), Democratic Republic of Congo (Kinshasa), Egypt (Hurghada and Marsa Alam), Gambia (Banjul), Ghana (Accra), Guinea (Conakry), Ivory Coast (Abidjan), Liberia (Monrovia), Morocco (Agadir and Marrakech), Rwanda (Kigali), Senegal (Dakar), Sierra Leone (Freetown), Togo (Lomé) and Uganda (Entebbe). Besides Africa – its most important long-haul market – Brussels Airlines flies to over 90 destinations in Europe and three in North America. The company employs over 4,000 people and operates about 250 flights to and from Brussels Airport each day with

some 50 aircraft. The airline aims to offer attractive fares along with the highest service quality. With yearly changing Belgian star chefs, the company is able to offer a wide selection of first-rate food and drinks. Brussels Airlines offers cargo capacity on all its flights and handles the daily maintenance of its fleet. With its new long-haul cabin, the airline aims to deliver an experience inspired by top-quality boutique hotels, characterised by small-scale luxury and a unique personality and character as well as a more personal service. In order to recreate the ‘beer and bar culture’ of Belgium, the airline has designed

a self-service bar aimed exclusively at Business Class passengers – a place where they can stroll to stretch their legs, have a drink and meet other guests. After all, networking and socialising is in the Belgian DNA. There is a choice of eight famous Belgian beers as well as good quality red and white wines. There is also a Nespresso machine for those who prefer coffee, accompanied by a Neuhaus praline on the side. The cabin’s new interior design has been inspired by Belgian Art Nouveau and Belgian masters such as Victor Horta and Henry van de Velde. Characteristic organic patterns, running from front to rear of the cabin, are complemented by a midnight blue carpet.

CUISINE Belgium’s reputation for good food is upheld on board, with delightful Belgian dishes in Business Class created by renowned Belgian chefs using local ingredients. This year, the airline is working with Belgian chef Thierry Theys from a Two Michelin Star restaurant called Nuance in Duffel. Passengers can also enjoy top quality wines from prestigious cellars around the world as well as LaurentPerrier champagne. R WA N D A T O U R I S M G U I D E 2 0 1 9 - 2 0
