REVEALING REMARKABLE RWANDA
W
elcome to Rwanda: the land of a thousand hills and a million smiles. Once you arrive in our fertile, beautiful land you’ll find a country filled with treasures and a people delighted to share them with you. Our compact size means visitors can tailor-make an itinerary that explores attractions in every corner. Nature and wildlife lovers will discover four national parks that are home to diverse wildlife including one of the world’s only four wild habitats for the majestic mountain gorillas – no longer critically endangered thanks to national conservation efforts. Those who love to experience a country’s way of life can choose from a rich heritage of traditional culture, which
has, in recent years, been enlivened buy a returning diaspora of young Rwandans wanting to make their mark at home. Check out the vibrant food, art and music scenes of capital Kigali for proof. Rwanda is also a growing destination for sports tourism. While its panoramas of forested mountains and crystal-clear lakes are beautiful on the eye, they also provide a challenging canvas for adventure enthusiasts to express themselves. A number of longdistance events such as triathlons, multi-day bike races and marathons now take place in Rwanda. We may be a land-locked country, but there is plenty of choice for beach breaks by our 28 significant-sized lakes. The shores of Lake Kivu – Rwanda’s largest lake and one of the best and safest places to swim in Africa – are especially popular with bike and hiking routes, including the bucket-list five-day Congo Nile Trail.
ABUNDANT To protect this abundant environment, Rwanda – which banned the use of plastic bags in 2008 – continues to promote environmentally friendly and climate-smart practices in various sectors, both public and private. This includes being one of the few Africa

countries with a hundreds-strong fleet of electric motorbike taxis with zero-emission buses coming soon. Kigali is also leading the way with car-free days twice a month to purify the air and turn the capital into a playground for roller-bladers, cyclists and joggers. The city also now has a green park of rewilded wetland and forest to provide a haven for bird life and a quiet retreat for city dwellers. The country’s hospitality sector has embraced the green movement with a host of hotels operating at a fully carbon-neutral level and attracting ecotourists keen to leave a light footprint during their stay. The result is Rwanda is one of the cleanest countries on the continent.
SAFETY Rwanda tops the list for safety in Africa. This achievement along with the country’s strong economic growth, improvements in living standards, low levels of bureaucracy, progressive ideology – women representation in parliament stands at 61 per cent – all contribute to the country’s appeal as an international MICE destination. The event epicentre is the Kigali Conference Centre, which this year hosted the FIFA Congress and, in 2022, the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting.
The venue continues to be a hub for a huge range of prestigious business and sports events. Such achievements have come in the wake of unimaginable adversity. In 2024, the country will be marking the 30th anniversary of the genocide against the Tutsi, in which nearly a million lives were lost in brutal acts of violence over just 100 days. While there has been much pain and loss in those 30 years, there has also been reconciliation and recovery led by truth. It observes a remarkable journey by a nation with strong and visionary leadership that chose to stay united and work together to rebuild the broken pieces into one. Getting here has never been easier. African citizens no longer require a visa to enter, and for non-citizens a visa is issued on arrival. There are also 12 airlines linking Rwanda with rest of the world. This includes our national carrier, RwandAir, one of Africa’s fastest-growing airlines, which links airports at Kigali and Kamembe to 24 international destinations in Africa, Europe, the Middle East and Asia. So, come with us as we show you what this small, yet mighty country in the heart of Africa has offer.

NATIONAL CARRIER FLYING DREAM OF AFRICA
R
wanda’s national carrier is RwandAir, which began operations in 2002 and has gone on to become one of Africa’s best-performing airlines.
It has one of the youngest fleets on the continent with 13 aircraft including three wide-body Airbus A330s and there are plans to double its aircraft over the next five years. Those expansion plans include an ambition to move the hub of its operations from Kigali International Airport its new home at Bugesera International Airport, which is being built to handle one million passengers and 150 million tonnes of cargo a year during its first phase of operation.
NETWORK Its network is truly international – taking in destinations across Europe, the Middle East and Asia – and continues to expand. As of June 2023, the airline added three weekly flights to Paris, making the French capital its 25th global destination. RwandAir’s Kigali hub also provides quick connections to its extensive network

of flights reaching across Africa to countries such as Ghana, Kenya, Nigeria and South Africa. RwandAir also offers its customers hassle-free connections with an extended network of destinations through codeshare agreements with other airlines, including a recent partnership with Qatar Airways that connects customers to 160 destinations combined. Rwanda’s national carrier has an excellent reputation for reliability and is considered the safest airline in Africa with UN agency the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) recognizing its competence in aviation safety and security monitoring in a recent audit. Flight bookings are secure and simple via the company’s website, with its easy-to-use booking form. Customers will be contacted by RwandAir with a flight confirmation and payment details. The airline is represented in the UK market by Flight Directors Scheduled Services.
AIRPORTS & AIRSTRIPS The main airports and airstrips of Rwanda, along with the cities where they are located and the provinces they serve, are as follows: AIRPORTS • Kigali International Airport, Kigali, Kigali Province • Kamembe International Airport, Cyangugu, Western Province • Gisenyi Airport, Gisenyi, Western Province • Bugesera International Airport, Nyamata, Eastern Province AIRSTRIPS • Ruhengeri Airstrip, Ruhengeri, Northern Province • Butare Airstrip, Butare, Southern Province • Nemba Airstrip, Nemba, Eastern Province

TAKES THE LEAD IN TECH INNOVATION
The city takes tidiness to a new level. In 2018, UN Environment Programme Head Eric Solheim referred to Kigali as the “cleanest city on the planet”, both in terms of lack of street rubbish and green initiatives. You’ll see what he meant on arrival. Chances are you won’t see as much as a discarded sweet wrapper your entire stay. One of the reasons it is so clean is the national holiday Umuganda. The event, which translates as ‘community’ from the national language Kinyarwanda, take place from 8am to 11am on the last Saturday of every month and involves citizens coming together to maintain their neighbourhood with tasks such as street sweeping, tree planting and grass cutting.
IMMACULATE The ease of exploring this inviting and immaculate city means its vibrant food, art, fashion and music scenes can be greedily enjoyed. The central neighbourhoods of Kacyiru and Kimihurura are dotted with independent galleries and fine dining establishments while the working-class district of Nyamirambo with its steep cobbled streets is home to the city’s underground music

In keeping with the Umuganda selflessness many of these cultural outlets give back to the community. The Nyamirambo Women’s Center is a great place to pick up locally made ornaments and clothing, but it was set up to give domestic abuse victims a source of income and the profits go towards various good causes, including the adjacent library, where women can learn to read and write. At the the Niyo Art Gallery artists who exhibit agree to donate a portion of their profits to Niyo Cultural Center, where street kids can go to learn how to sing, drum and dance. Along with its thriving culture, the city is taking the lead in technological innovation on the continent. President Paul Kagame is intent on turning the capital into a major tech hot-spot and has greenlit the building of a US$ 420 million innovation park and the city also now houses the largest start-up hub in Africa, the Norrsken Foundation, which hosts more than 750 entrepreneurs. The focus is on incubating ideas that put people first and make life better with recent tech successes launched in the city including the first smart phone made from scratch in Africa and designed to promote digital inclusion, a satellite programme to help monitor water supplies and a national drone delivery system to get medical supplies to remote areas of the country.

Kigali invites exploration on foot. No other capital city in East Africa can be walked so widely and without hassle day or night. Join the Kigalians strolling the pristine pavements that flank many tree-lined boulevards and you’ll be left respectfully alone until that is you ever need directions or assistance when locals will be only too happy to help. However, with many of the roads winding up to neighbourhoods spread over a cluster of peaks, you may want to hail a motorbike taxi – you’ll find them on nearly every street corner – if your energy starts to dip. Put on the mint green spare helmet the driver hands you and away you go.

et in a rolling landscape of verdant hills and valleys, the Rwandan capital, Kigali, stakes a claim for being one of the most beautiful cities in the world. Spectacular sunrises and sunsets bathe its highlands in light while at night the city’s illuminations twinkle like stars beaded across the mountainous backdrop.
ADVANCES Travel in Kigali and you’ll see some of these technological advances. The buses have free Wi-Fi and cashless payment services and noise pollution on the city’s streets is now reduced thanks to a growing fleet of electric motorbike taxis and a bicycle sharing scheme. On the first and third Sundays of every month you’ll barely hear any traffic noise at all. That is because these are Kigali car-free days when the city’s major roads are RWANDA TOURISM GUIDE 2024

EXERCISE If you are after more exercise during your stay, the surrounding hills offer fantastic biking and hiking opportunities with easy links to trails from the city. There is even a riding stables in the hills to ride the trails and enjoy some incredible scenery. Other popular sports include basketball – the city’s 10,000 capacity BK Arena is the venue for the finals of the NBA-endorsed Africa Basketball League – and football and the city even has a golf course and a cricket ground (complete with a pavilion modelled on the iconic rolling hills here). Kigali has also become a hub for meetings and conferences with the 5,000-capacity Kigali Convention Centre having recently hosted such prestigious events as the FIFA Congress in March 2023 and Cybertech Africa. Kigali’s central location in Africa, its continued economic success – Rwanda averages 7.5% GDP growth each year – excellent transport infrastructure, hospitality options and safety record all contribute to its leading position. It is incredible to believe there was a time when Kigali was seen as a little more than a stopover on the way to wildlife adventures in Rwanda. Now, a longer stay is essential to see how it has been transformed – by President Paul Kagame, by new laws and policies, and primarily by the people who live there – into what may be the most inviting city in Africa.
NEIGHBOURHOOD WATCH Kigali is made up of neighbourhoods, each with their distinct character and appeal. Here’s a guide.
KIMIRONKO Many African capitals have a tradition of having a renowned market. In Kigali, one of the largest, most well-stocked and most colourful is to be found in Kimironko. You can find just about anything you need. Every conceivable type of food, as well as a wide range of home accessories and fashionable shoes and clothes. Dressmakers come every day to make your next outfit. Of course, the bargaining game is omnipresent, but that's part of the charm of this essential visit.
REMERA In the vibrant Remera district lies the newly renovated Amahoro Stadium (40,000 capacity) and the BK Arena (10,000 capacity). Both are beacons of athletic expertise and community spirit, they stand as a testament to Rwanda's unwavering commitment to excellence and progress. With modern design and facilities, Amahoro Stadium and BK Arena are world-class venues. From sports matches to concerts and cultural celebrations, they redefine the landscape of entertainment in Kigali. BK Arena has a go-karting track, shopping outlets and recently hosted the BAL Games, Trace Awards and concerts by artists Bruce Melody, Davido, Tiwa Savage, and Boyz II Men.

RWANDA CHAMBER OF TOURISM
Kibagabaga is a subtle mix of residential areas and places to enjoy a night of partying. Large villas decorate the streets with the rugged relief rising and falling from this magnificent hill, and around the corner from some of them you'll come across places where you need to be to have hours of fun, like the famous Pili Pili bar-restaurant or the Gilt Club.

closed to motorised vehicles with Kigalians young and old congregating to walk, jog, bike, roller skate or take an outdoor exercise class. The event is open to everyone so just turn up, join in and let the health and happiness rub off on you.
KIYOVU Kiyovu is one of the most central municipalities in the Rwandan capital. It is home to most of the major hotels, including the Marriot, Serena and Sheraton. For a majestic view over the whole city, visit the rooftop of the Ubumwe Grande Hotel. It's breathtaking. A few hundred metres further on, you'll also find the car-free zone, a lively pedestrian area that often hosts activities such as concerts and fair trade events. Further down the commune, you can also enjoy the Cercle Sportif (CSK), a legendary Kigali institution where you can play all kinds of sports.
NYAMIRAMBO This sleepless maze is the city's multicultural heart, older than Kigali itself and peopled with migrants from across the continent. Here you will find the Nyamirambo Women’s Center, opened in 2007 to provide education and training to disadvantaged women while educating visitors about traditional cooking, craft-making, and clothing.
KABUGA A few minutes from Kigali’s airport, you’ll find Umusambi Village, a unique conservation project which provides a sanctuary for over 50 endangered Grey Crowned Cranes saved from the illegal pet trade.
RWANDA TOURISM WEEK
RWANDA TOURISM WEEK UNVEILING INNOVATION, SHOWCASING DIVERSITY, AND CONNECTING AFRICA
T
he Rwanda Tourism Week, a significant event in the tourism sector of Rwanda, typically showcases a variety of activities and initiatives aimed at boosting tourism and related businesses. Last edition of the Rwanda Tourism Week was held from November 26th to December 3rd at different venues including the Kigali Conference and Exhibition Village (KCEV) and the Kigali Convention Centre (KCC). The theme for the event was "Adopting Innovative Approaches to Boost Intra-Africa Travel as a drive for Tourism Business Recovery," focusing on rebuilding the tourism sector after challenging times. The event aims to promote domestic, intra-regional, and continental tourism businesses, focus on inclusive tourism involving youth and women, showcase innovation and technology in tourism, and establish public-private sector collaborations. Key activities of the event include: Familiarisation Trips: These trips offered participants and international tour operators an opportunity to explore Rwanda's attractions and learn more about the country through a specially packaged tour. Photo Competition: Titled "Rwanda in a Traveler’s Lens," this competition invites local and international photographers to showcase Rwanda's diverse tourism attractions. It is an opportunity for storytellers to raise awareness about Rwanda as a destination through social media. Restaurant Week: This culinary event featured special rates at top restaurants, allowing diners to enjoy discounted and set-price meals. Golf for Conservation: This event combined sports tourism and conservation, connecting the region's business elite with business stakeholders and highlighting the theme of "Tee-off for the Gorilla conservation."
Tourism Business Forum: A platform for stakeholders in the tourism industry to discuss current trends, investment opportunities, and strategies for sector recovery. Exhibitions: These provided a platform for local, regional, and international tourism and hospitality operators to showcase their products and services. Fashion Show: A platform for local and regional fashion brands to showcase their designs and promote the Rwandan creative industry. Gala Dinner and Awards: The event culminated in a gala dinner where awards were presented to recognize outstanding service in the tourism industry. The event attracts over 1000 participants from over 19 countries, including high-profile dignitaries, policy makers, trade visitors, exhibitors, and media. RTW led to increased awareness of tourism products and attractions across Africa, creation of job opportunities, and establishment of trade agreements and MoUs. It also provided a platform for public and private sectors to address challenges and opportunities in the tourism sector.

ACTION-PACKED OUTDOOR ADVENTURES
T
he majestic landscapes of Rwanda are an outdoor playground for intrepid visitors. Whether you want to enjoy mountain biking, running or swimming or to combine all three in an Ironman event, you can let loose on some action-packed adventures.
Hiking adventures can also get you up close to Rwanda’s most renowned wildlife. Volcanoes National Park, just outside of Musanze in the country’s mountainous northwest, in home to a large number of the world’s mountain gorillas and to get a much-prized audience with a family of these gentle giants requires a guided hike through a slippy and steep rainforest terrain. It can take up to three hours – you’ll also need a permit priced at US$ 1,500 for visitors from outside Africa – but it’s an experience few travellers ever forget. Scaling Rwanda’s highest peak, Mount Karisimbi, is one of the country’s greatest adventures. It takes two days – you’ll spend the night in a cabin at the half-way point – to trek this impressive volcano on the border between Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of the Congo and once you reach the summit you’ll be rewarded with aweinspiring views over both countries. It takes far less time to ‘bag’ Mount Bisoke in the Virunga Mountains. All levels of climbers should be able to reach
16

this peak within six hours and the ascent offers views of crater lakes and the possibility of spotting forest elephants and mountain gorillas (without paying for a permit). In case of an encounter with gorillas, hikers are allowed only 10 minutes to see the gorillas and from a distance. Hiking adventures are even possible beginning in downtown Kigali. Head north from the bustling Nyamirambo neighbourhood and you’ll find various trails snaking up to the 1,853 m Mount Kigali, which dominates the landscape and gave the city its name.
MOUNTAIN BIKING Rwandans love cycling as transport. You’ll see young and old going improbably fast on single-speed steel bikes imported from China or India while carrying stacks of market-bound fruit and veg or even a friend or family member on the rear racks. Cycling as a sport is also now growing, especially on the roads with the country chosen to host the UCI Road World Championships in 2025.

There are walks amid beautiful nature in Rwanda for every ability level from hardcore hikes to easier strolls. However, challenging your choice, you’ll be rewarded with some of the country’s most epic views. The Congo Nile Trail runs the full length of Lake Kivu for 226 km. Covering it all will take at least five days and there are options to hike, bike and kayak the entire trail. The route takes you through the great Nyungwe Forest, rolling green tea fields and small Rwandan towns from which crowds of children will spill to cheer you on your way.

However, it is off-road two-wheeled adventures that perhaps showcase the country’s dramatic terrain best. That is certainly what appealed to Brit Matthew Brokenshire when he arrived in Kigali with his family from the UK to live and work in 2017. Matt soon got in with the local mountain biking community and found there were thrilling rides to be had within easy reach of his home in the northern suburb of Nduba. “It is one of the most accessible cities for trails I know,” he says. “In 15 minutes from anywhere you can be on the mountains.” The rides got longer, and Matt came to realise Rwanda was an “incredible place for adventure” with his favourite routes including near Lake Muhazi and along the Jali Ridge “where you can often see the volcanoes in the distance… super epic in the mornings”. In a bid to push his new-found passion for cycling to the extreme and showcase Rwanda’s picturesque trails to sports tourists across the globe, Matt collaborated with Kigali-based Belgian Simon De Schutter in setting up two challenging annual bike races. The Race Around Rwanda is an endurance event over a largely off-road 1,000km course to be completed as fast as possible with the next event taking place on February 4, 2024. The Rwandan Epic is a five-stage mountain bike event which starts at the end of October. For those who don’t think they are ready for five days of cycling, the last stage of the Rwandan Epic – which takes place around Kigali – has become a standalone race, the Rwanda Open with 65km and 30km options. For a more laidback cycling adventure Rwanda Beyond is offering two six-day ‘bikepacking’ adventures that take in the country’s beauty at a more tranquil pace with bed and breakfast stops each evening.
KAYAKING With 28 lakes within its borders, Rwanda offers plenty of opportunities for kayaking adventures. The narrow, winding Lake Muhazi is a popular rural escape from Kigali
IRONMAN IMPACT Here are some key ways in which Ironman has impacted the tourism and hospitality businesses in Rwanda: Increased Tourist Arrivals: The event's international reputation draws a considerable number of over 200 participants to Rwanda. Boost in Revenue: The increased number of tourists during Ironman 2022-2023 created higher revenue for the hospitality sector. Exposure and Brand Awareness: Rwanda's role as the host of Ironman 2024 garners global media attention and exposure. Infrastructure Development: In preparation for Ironman 2024, there may be improvements to transportation, roads, and event facilities. Promotion of Active and Adventure Tourism: Ironman 2024 highlights Rwanda's potential as an active and adventure tourism destination. Enhanced Hospitality Services: To cater to the event's international participants and visitors, hospitality businesses will be encouraged to improve their services and offerings. Long-term Investment Attraction: Ironman 2024's success can attract further investments in the tourism and hospitality sector. Capacity Building and Skill Development: To accommodate the surge in demand during Ironman 2024, hospitality businesses may need to expand their workforce. This presents an opportunity for job creation.

IRONMAN An Ironman triathlon is considered one of the toughest one-day events out there. A good way into the sport is Ironman 70.3, which effectively cuts the race’s distance in half. Competitors still have to complete a 1.9 km swim, a 90 km bike ride and a 21.1 km run before they hit the finish line. It is a global sport with more than 150 qualifying races in 50-plus countries each year. In 2022 Rwanda became the first country in the East and Central Africa region to host the Ironman 70.3 triathlon competition. Now in its third year, the next race will take place on August 4, 2024. It is held in the scenic Rubavu district with the swimming stage taking place on Lake Kivu. Bonita Mutoni, of
CAR-FREE SUNDAY The Rwandan government has shown its support for the benefits of outdoor exercise with the introduction of car-free Sundays in Kigali. Every first and third Sunday of the month between 7am and 10am a series of major roads from Imbuga City Walk, the city centre along Rwanda Revenue Authority offices in Kimihurura and to Amahoro National Stadium in Remera are closed to traffic. For those three hours the roads become a playground for Kigalians to run, cycle, roller-skate or just stroll to their hearts’ content. Head out with friends or family or join in on one of the many communal running events. The centre of events is the large roundabout in front of the Radisson Blu hotel and Kigali Convention Centre where you’ll find pop-up exercise classes, a host of unusual sports to try – foot tennis anyone? – as well as refreshments on sale. The event has proved so popular that there are now more regular car-free events on the calendar with the bi-monthly Kigali night runs providing a chance for a 5.4 km jog in the cool of the evening with music and more than a thousand other runners to spur you on.
NYANDUNGU ECO-PARK The transformation of a degraded urban wetland into the largest addition to public green space in Kigali is a boon for biophilia (connecting with nature). The 121-hectare park located between the city’s Gasabo and Kicukiro districts has 10km of walkways of bike lanes to exercise while taking in the natural beauty of the thriving ecosystem here. Along with the restored critical wetland habitat, the park, which opened in July 2022, features 17,000 newly planted indigenous trees, a native fig forest, a series of ponds and a medicinal garden. It’s a beautiful and sustainable addition to Kigali’s green exercise options. The park is open from 6am to 6pm every day of the week. Entrance is free and there is a car park and restaurant on site.

Rwanda’s largest lake, the sparkling Lake Kivu, is also ideal for a paddling experience. You can take guided kayak tours for a few hours to a full day to explore the lakes islands and beaches and keep an eye out for local birdlife such as flocks of pelicans, crowned cranes and tiny malachite kingfishers. Other popular water sports available on the lake include water-skiing, wind surfing and paddle boarding.
organisers Global Events Africa, says Ironman has put Rwanda on the sports tourism map with many competitors staying to experience further adventures in the country once the event is over. “Rubavu is an untapped gem on the shores of Lake Kivu with much to offer as a premium sports destination for water sports and scaling mountains. The terrain here is perfect for a sport like Ironman,” she says.

NATURAL WONDERS AND ADVENTURE CONVERGE
R
wanda’s national parks are lush sanctuaries for some of the world’s rarest wildlife and are at the forefront of the country’s world-leading conservation and community-funding programmes.
NYUNGWE NATIONAL PARK Sat in the southwest pocket of Rwanda on the border with Burundi, Nyungwe is one of Africa’s oldest rainforests. With its dense canopy of trees carpeting the rolling hills of the Albertine Rift, the park is breathtakingly beautiful and across its 970 sq km you’ll also find stretches of bamboo, grasslands, wetlands and bogs. Such diversity of habitats means it supports a wide range of plant and wildlife, including several species found nowhere else on earth, including the globally threatened eastern chimpanzee, golden monkey and the critically endangered hills horseshoe bat. Additionally, Nyungwe National Park is a critical site for bird conservation in Africa with 322 species recorded.
Such beauty and biodiversity has merited Nyungwe National Park’s inclusion on the Unesco World Heritage List in 2023. The announcement was made in September with the park becoming the first site in Rwanda inscribed on the prestigious list, which collates places on Earth of outstanding universal value to be protected for future generations to enjoy. The Unesco designation should strengthen Rwanda’s ongoing conservation initiatives. In 2020 the country’s government invited African Parks – after its transformational work in Akagera National Park – to manage Nyungwe and by the following year 2.77 sq km of indigenous forest had already been regenerated and 15 local guides have been trained to deliver the park’s tourism activities, thanks to a community freelance guiding project. Intrepid visitors who want to delve deep into the park and discover its natural riches can follow the three-day Cyinzobe trail, which offer plenty of opportunity for

wildlife encounters, stunning views and crystal-clear waterfalls such as at Kamiranzovu. There is also the chance to take in the montane rainforest from its treetops by taking the park’s canopy walkway. Suspended above a ravine, the 160-metre long and 70-metre high suspension bridge is accessible as part of a guided tour along the Igishigishigi trail or to those hiking the Imbaraga or Umuyove trails. An unforgettable experience.
VOLCANOES NATIONAL PARK Any trip to Rwanda should include gorillas in the mix. Having a close encounter with a silverback in its natural habitat amid the mist-shrouded mountains and shimmering crater lakes of Volcanoes National Park is a true bucket-list adventure. The park in Rwanda’s north-west corner is the only place in the country to see the habituated gorilla families and indeed one of only four national parks to see them in the world. The massive primates – they are actually gentle giants with a mainly herbivore diet (sucking on the sap from eucalyptus trees is a favourite snack) – are the emblem of the wildlife conservation measures that have become part of Rwandan identity. The government reinvests almost half of the park’s income to finance equipment for research, medical teams and anti-poaching units. As a result, the numbers of mountain gorillas are increasing year on year in Volcanoes National Park. At the latest count, there are approximately 1,000 mountain gorillas in the wild, with 604 in the Virunga mountain range that holds the park. Such conservation efforts look set to only increase with the opening in 2022 of the Ellen DeGeneres Campus near the entrance to the park. The US$15 million, 12-acre campus – named after the US chat show host and conservationist who gifted the project a considerable sum – aims to continue the work of the Dian Fossey Gorilla Fund. Named after the pioneering British primatologist who gave her life to protecting Rwanda’s gorilla population, the fund has since its inception in 1978 dedicated to the conservation, protection and study of gorillas and their habitats in Africa. The growing gorilla population and the fact that guides keep tabs on the animals’ whereabouts mean visitors on guided treks are almost guaranteed to get an

A huge part of the forest was cleared after the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsis and used for cultivation and the resettlement of refugees. Incredibly, a population of less than 20 chimpanzees had somehow managed to survive in the remaining 6 sq km of forest and a campaign began to save them, buy back the land and start replanting trees. A collaboration between the Rwandan government and the Forest of Hope Association and its partners has enabled a 67 percent increase in size of the Gishwati Forest.
awe-inspiring hour observing the primates from just a few metres away. There are 12 gorilla families living in the Volcanoes National Park, which are fully habituated, with a few others habituated solely for scientific research. The groups, or troops, consist of at least one silverback along with several females and youngsters. The trek to find the gorillas is as beautiful as it is arduous. While you struggle through dense vegetation and up the steep slopes of the six dormant volcanoes in the park, you’ll find the rain forest is alive with the calling of over 200 colourful bird species and the mist-covered bamboo forest makes every step magical.
Some 10,000 trees alone have been planted around the Forest of Hope Lodge that provides accommodation for visitors in the park and is the base for activities such as guided nature hike that seek out the wildlife that has been encouraged to thrive in the forests, which sit on the ridge which divides the Congo and Nile water catchment areas, along the incredibly biodiverse Albertine Rift in the west of the country. The chimpanzees are still here and they now live alongside golden monkeys, L’Hoest’s and Blue Monkeys. Birds are plentiful too with 232 species recorded at Gishwati and 163 at Mukura, among them Albertine Rift endemic species and forest specialists. As well as a national park, the area is also designated as a Unesco Biosphere Reserve, which should ensure sustainable use and conservation of natural resources and the improvement of relationship between people and their environment. Forest of Hope supports the local community to develop and run projects such as beekeeping, handcrafts and traditional as community tourism development.
Gorillas may grab the headlines, but they are not the park’s only wildlife. You’ll also find golden monkeys, elephant and buffalo, giant forest hog, bushbuck, blackfronted duiker and spotted hyena. Other attractions within the park’s environs include Buhanga Eco-Park, an ancient forest holding Rwanda’s most intriguing folklore and Musanze Caves, formed 62 million years ago after the last estimated volcanic eruption.
GISHWATI-MUKURA NATIONAL PARK Rwanda’s newest national park – it was established in 2015 – is another rewilding success for the country. Two depleted forests – the larger Gishwati and small Mukura – are being replenished and returned to their previous

BEAUTIFUL BIRD LIFE OF RWANDA
G
orillas may grab the headlines, but Rwanda is also a bird lover’s paradise. The diverse and colourful species here so enchanted Brit Will Wilson when he moved to Rwanda that he changed career to capture them on camera as a professional wildlife photographer. Here he discusses what draws so many birds to the country accompanied by some of his stunning images.

Rwanda is home to more than 700 different birds. Approximately 520 species are residents and can be seen throughout the year in their different habitats across the country. Of those residents 29 are Albertine Rift endemics – meaning they can only be found in the Albertine Rift, which runs through the west of Rwanda – and are best seen in Nyungwe National Park. A stunning example is the regal sunbird.

DIVERSITY

Such diversity of birds is not only seen in Rwanda’s national parks, forests and rural areas, but also in her cities. For example, Kigali is home to more than 250 species of birds, from the stunning Ross’s turaco – which can be found foraging for fruit in the canopy of trees – through to the awesome double-toothed barbets that likes to nest in the cavities of old Acacia trees. The hills on which Kigali is built are surrounded by wetlands that flow into the rivers that meander around the city’s outskirts. This means the birds which are usually found in wetland habitats are also visitors to the city. One such example is the hamerkop. This extraordinary medium-sized brown bird builds the largest nest of any single pair of birds. Each enclosed three-tiered structure takes between 10 and 12 weeks to build and includes around 8,000 separate items of sticks and leaf litter. Material is even added after the eggs have been laid, which can include feathers, reeds, bones and even items left behind by their human neighbours. Plastic toys and gardening tools have been spotted in some nests! These awesome nests can be seen in the trees that line Kigali’s roads, as well as school grounds and in gardens.
BIRDSONGS Across Rwanda you can hear the most beautiful and melodic birdsongs, examples include the various larks, African pied wagtail, Klaas’s cuckoo and papyrus gonolek. Some species take their individual songs a step further and sing together, either as a duet or as a group. The blackheaded gonolek, tropical boubou and African fish eagle are just three of many species found in Rwanda that will sing together as a pair. Other species like the African grey parrot found in Nyungwe National Park and the blue-shouldered robin-chat found in Akagera National Park will mimic the sounds of other animals and even humans in their songs. The divergence and variation in behaviour, plumage and song across the different species should put Rwanda high up the list for anyone who enjoys watching birds.
Image © Will Wilson
The temperate climate is just one reason that Rwanda is home to so many birds. The network of rivers, lakes and wetlands across the country also plays a major role as they provide a rich variety of habitats and ecosystems for the different birds to thrive in. The various herons, egrets and storks commonly seen on the riverbanks are also usually accompanied by kingfishers, ducks and geese. The difference in altitude between the top of one of the ‘thousand hills’ and the valley below enables an array of vegetation to grow for the different birds to feed on.
Each day starts in Rwanda with a dawn chorus of birdsong. As the night sky starts to turn pale whitebrowed robin-chats are usually the first to start, quickly followed by the African thrush and northern grey-headed sparrow. Bird calls and other vocalisations will then punctuate the rest of the day as the birds go about their daily business.
Image © Will Wilson
A further six species are Lake Victoria endemics, in Rwanda these birds can be seen in Bugesera District and Akagera National Park. The other 190 species are visitors, only calling Rwanda home for part of the year, usually between September and March. While some – such as the lesser-striped swallow – are intra-African migrants and arrive from countries across the continent, others are trans-continental migrants.
Will has worked with the Rwanda Wildlife Conservation Association and Gorilla Doctors to support their work to protect and conserve Rwanda’s wildlife. His book, ‘Falling for the Birds of Kigali’, has just been published and is available at bookshops across Kigali as online at komezart.com

AKAGERA NATIONAL PARK
REHOMING WILDLIFE IN RWANDA
SPECTACULAR As a safari experience, Akagera National Park is truly spectacular. That the national park is here at all is nothing short of a miracle. The genocide nearly destroyed it with areas cleared and reduced for settlers and refugees, leaving poachers to run rife. Such was the pressure that many of its iconic animals, from lions to rhinos, disappeared in a few short years. However, since 2010, a programme – run jointly by the Rwanda Development Board and African Parks, a non-governmental organisation focused on conservation – has made incredible progress in rewilding the park and repopulating it with wildlife. Akagera now stands reborn as Central Africa’s largest protected wetland and the last remaining refuge for savannah-adapted species in Rwanda. Poaching has now been virtually eliminated with former perpetrators now retrained as rangers patrolling the
24
RWANDA CHAMBER OF TOURISM
REINTRODUCED This is the pattern here with reintroduced animals thriving within the fertile sanctuary. Seven lions were brought to Akagera in 2015 and there are now an estimated 58 of the big cats roaming in the park. The endangered Masai giraffe, introduced to Akagera from Kenya in 1986, currently numbers an estimated 78 individuals while a population of around 26 baby elephants transferred to the park from southern Rwanda in 1975 now numbers around 130 thanks to conservation initiatives. Akagera has become a global conservation model, showing a world in which millions of species are in danger of extinction that nature can be encouraged to come back. As the animals have returned so have the tourists. Safari tours and sustainable hospitality options provide income-generation for the park’s operations and to support local communities. Nearly US$1 million of economic activity flowed from the park into the surrounding communities in 2022. Today, thanks to continued support, the park is rapidly approaching being 100 per cent self-financing through growing tourism and local enterprise projects.

Rwanda is a big-five safari destination, and you can find thriving populations of the prized lion, leopard, rhinoceros, elephant and Cape buffalo all in the 1,122 sq km of Akagera National Park. One of the prettiest parks in Africa, the protected area in eastern Rwanda along the border with Tanzania consists of three distinct environments meaning it supports a rich and disparate range of wildlife beyond the big-five headliners. Its network of lakes and surrounding papyrus forest is home to hippos, crocodiles and a huge array of birdlife; across its predominant savannah plains you’ll find herds of giraffe, zebra and all manner of antelopes and in its spectacular mountain ranges lurk largely solitary leopards.
park to protect the animals. As a result, wildlife populations are thriving, having grown from fewer than 5,000 in 2010 to almost 12,000 animals today. Akagera is the only place in Rwanda to find rhino in the wild with black rhino reintroduced between 2015 and 2018 and 30 southern white rhino from South Africa released in the park in 2022. They have adapted well with several new calves born since their arrival.

R
wanda’s largest national park has been reborn as a Big-Five destination with conservation at its heart.
AKAGERA ADVENTURES There are many ways to explore the national park’s wildlife riches.
HOT-AIR BALLOON EXPERIENCE
Options include accompanying a local ranger along a section of the park’s 120-kilometre perimeter fence or booking multi-day walking safaris in which you camp each night under the stars.
One of the most unforgettable ways to take in Akagera’s unique geography is on a hot-air balloon trip. The adventure starts early as passengers witness how the crew assembles and inflates the balloon at the take-off site while enjoying morning coffee and snacks. Once on-board the balloon climbs approximately 300m allowing for panoramic and marvellous views. Balloons move by the wind and will float wherever the wind takes it so that each flight brings new and memorable experiences. Each passenger is to dress according to the temperature. Flat shoes, hat, sunglasses and of course camera is a must. As ballooning tradition, there is a champagne ceremony after the landing and guests are given a flight certificate signed by the pilots.
SELF-DRIVE SAFARI At just 60km from north to south and wellmarked trails to keep to, a self-drive safari is straightforward and a fantastic opportunity to immerse yourself in the park.
NIGHT SAFARI Many of Akagera’s animals keep nocturnal hours so a night drive in a 4x4 vehicle equipped with a spotlight that reflects the light in the eyes of leopards, lions and other creatures of the night is a window into another wild world.

WALKING SAFARI

BOAT SAFARI Akagera Park has many large bodies of water surrounded by swamp that are rich habitats for wildlife. On the largest, Lake Ihema, boat trips are available just a short drive from the luxury Ruzizi Tented Lodge on its banks. The trips reveal plenty of crocodiles and hippos as well as 550 species of birds, including the rare and remarkable shoebill stork and endemic species of jacanas, herons, plovers, sandpipers and kingfishers.
AKAGERA ACHIEVEMENTS ONLY PLACE TO FIND WHITE RHINOS IN RWANDA White rhinos, which are categorized as nearthreatened by the World Wildlife Fund, can be found in the park. Since 30 arrived in 2022, several new calves were born.
GISHANDA FISH FARM Opened in October 2022, this initiative to repopulate the depleted stocks of tilapia in Gishanda Lake provides jobs and sustainable fishing to the community.
PROTECTION FROM POACHING
TOURISM TARGETS
Akagera's Canine Anti-Poaching Unit plays a significant role in its protection strategy, providing increased monitoring of the park. As a result, there has been no recorded loss of high-value species (elephant, rhino and lion) to poaching since 2010.
2022 was the best performing year overall for tourism to Akagera, with 34,000 paying visitors and 92 per cent of operating costs covered by park revenue. Since 2010, Rwandan citizens have on average constituted 46 per cent of paying guests to the park, showing its value as an attraction and an asset in the country.
ENVIRONMENTAL EDUCATION Almost 2,000 schoolchildren and 350 local leaders visit Akagera National Park each year.

CUISINE
EAT
YOUR WAY AROUND RWANDA
Akabanga chili oil is a fiery sauce made from a mix of chili peppers grown in Rwanda. The name means ‘little secret’ in Kinyarwanda and the story goes that when the product was launched by businessman Sina Gérard, his first customers were so taken by the oil’s taste they assumed it must contain a secret ingredient. Now Gérard is a millionaire, and his famous oil is used to spice up eggs, meat, fish, stews, salads and soups.
TINY, BUT TASTY FISH Lake Kivu is one of Africa’s deepest lakes and in its depths swim huge shoals of sardine-like sambaza. Fishermen set out at sunset singing songs in Amashi, an almost forgotten language only they now use and carrying torches to illuminate the waters and attract the fish into their nets. The salty fish are considered a delicacy.
SWEET TREATS Mandazi are an East African staple. The fried doughnuts are not that sweet when plain but are often sprinkled with cardamom. They're not glazed or coated in sugar. They're commonly eaten for breakfast as a snack with a cup of tea.
THE WORLD’S BEST AVOCADOS OK, so avocados are probably not new to you, but trust me there are avocados and then there are Rwandan avocados. Grown in the country’s fertile highlands, they are gigantic, creamy and soft as butter.

RWANDA CHAMBER OF TOURISM
To eat like a Rwandan, you need to sample the plentiful street food. Brochettes (small, well-seasoned skewers of barbecued meat) are a popular snack often accompanied with a serving of Rwandan French fries or Ibirayi made from unpeeled Rwandan potatoes boiled in water filled with freshly ground spices and fried twice so they are brown and crispy. You’ll also find vendors serving Isombe from great bubbling vats. The dish is simply made from pounded cassava leaves and is a great source of fibre.
BANANA BREW Get yourself invited to a Rwandan wedding and the urwagwa will certainly be flowing. This traditional alcoholic beverage is made by allowing bananas to ferment underground (usually covered in banana leaves) before peeling, kneading and mashing them to remove all of their juices.
CAFFEINE FIX Rwanda is justly famous for its coffee with small-scale farms around the Lake Kivu, Kizi Rift, Virunga, Muhazi and Akagera regions producing the premium quality Bourbon Arabica beans sought out by specialty brew lovers all over the world. Coffee tours give visitors insight into the expert and empowering work involved while Rwandan-run cafés such as Question Coffee, with a couple of branches in Kigali, brew and sell beans from a variety of women-run co-ops.
TIME FOR TEA Icyayi is a traditional black tea that is as an accompaniment to snacks and midday meals in Rwanda. Most locals drink it straight and piping hot, but you can sweeten it with milk and sugar.
