Hospitality & Tourism Association of Botswana
UNFORGETTABLE Located in southern Africa, Botswana is home to some of the continent’s greatest wildlife areas, including the Okavango Delta, the Central Kalahari Game Reserve and Chobe National Park. Not only does Botswana have a lot to offer in terms of astounding sights and areas of unforgettable beauty, our country is also proud of its stability, both politically and economically, setting us apart from some of our close neighbours and offering peace of mind to both Batswana and international visitors. Gaborone, the capital, hosts Botswana’s main airport, Sir Seretse Khama International Airport, where the majority of international flights arrive and depart. Several other airports, including Maun Airport, Kasane Airport and Francistown Airport, help to connect Botswana so that visitors can make the most of their stay with us and experience the diversity of our country. Botswana’s currency, Pula, is stable and takes its name from the Setswana word for ‘rain’, as it is regarded as a valuable resource. One Pula is equivalent to 100 thebe. Visitors can exchange foreign currency for Pula at bureaux throughout the country.

PROMOTING EXCELLENCE IN THE TOURISM INDUSTRY
H
atab is a non-profit organisation representing nine sectors of the tourism industry including camps, lodges, hotels, mobile safaris, tour operators, services, conservation and wildlife management, air charters and airlines. The organisation has a mission to promote and encourage excellence in hospitality and tourism. HATAB aims to ensure that all visitors, from both inside and outside Botswana, can expect a consistently high standard of service from across the whole tourism and hospitality sector. As an advocacy body, HATAB provides its members with a unified voice to engage the Government and other stakeholders. HATAB encourages synergy between members and key players in the tourism sector. Our vision at HATAB, and indeed as Batswana, is to tap into the natural warmth and hospitality of our people and to share our cultural heritage and the splendour of our natural environment with both the domestic and global tourism markets alike. In the year 2016-17 we have seen an increase in the HATAB membership. The organisation now has 320 members, contributing to over 75 per cent of tourism value to Botswana.

hen it comes to art and artefacts, the Batswana people have a long tradition of dazzling creativity. FROM TSWANA FOLK MUSIC TO HIP HOP Music is a vibrant aspect of Botswana culture, embracing both folk music and various aspects of modern popular music. On the traditional side, Tswana folk music is mostly about singing accompanied by string instruments, but without drums. The original string instruments were the segaba, segankure and setinkane, but today the guitar is widely used for accompaniment. In the absence of
instruments, a clapping rhythm is used in music with the typical chant-and-answer manner of singing. Most of the popular music in Botswana is imported from South Africa, the United States and Europe and includes hip hop, rock and gumba-gumba, a form of Zulu and Tswana music mixed with traditional jazz. Visitors can see displays of traditional dancing at most of the safari camps.

NATIONAL DISH Seswaa, a tasty combination of meat and thick maize porridge, is the national dish of Botswana. Like so many indigenous recipes, it’s a dish inspired by necessity in a traditionally poor country where meat was regarded as a comparative luxury. It consists of a meat stew – made by boiling meat with onion and pepper – served over thick polenta or pap. The meat is cooked for two hours and then shredded and pounded with salt to add flavour. The stew is then placed on top of the thick maize meal. It is often served with morogo (a leafy green wild spinach).

CONSERVATION
A MISSION TO CONSERVE WILD HERITAGE
R
enowned for its spectacular wildlife and areas of pristine wilderness, Botswana has one of the highest conservation land ratios in Africa. Over a quarter of its land area has been set aside for parks and reserves to conserve the country’s natural heritage.
Some of Botswana’s richest wildlife areas are located at its northern border with Namibia, where there were problems with cross-border poaching in the 1990s. The army was used to protect the wildlife as well as patrolling the border. The current president, Ian Khama, was head of the Botswana

Thanks to firm planning by a concerned government, the outlook for tourism in Botswana is very positive and the industry is looking to expand and provide the ultimate African safari experience for visitors.

PROTECTING LARGE CARNIVORES The Botswana Predator Conservation Trust (BPCT) has a mission to research and protect all the large carnivore species in Botswana – wild dog, lion, leopard, cheetah and spotted hyena – along with their habitats. What began in 1989 as the Botswana Wild Dog Research Project has become BPCT, one of Africa’s longest-running conservation projects. BPCT uses scientific inquiry to better understand the behaviour of these animals. It operates at the point where communities and conservation meet, linking environmental issues to decision-making in the ongoing development of rural Africa.

A
ir Shakawe is an air charter operator based in Maun. The company first opened its doors in June 2010, operating with only one aircraft. This aircraft was based at a small airport in North Western Botswana, in a town called Shakawe, and was designed for scenic flights over the Panhandle area and the Okavango Delta. During the second year of operations, Air Shakawe had already added an additional aircraft to its fleet.
For longer journeys, the company has twin-engine aircraft and business jets. Air Shakawe offers scenic flights to travellers wishing to view the Okavango Delta from the air and for visitors who want to be flown between the various lodges in the Okavango Delta. It also provides camp transfers. A range of other services is provided by Air Shakawe. Vumbura Plains is a luxury camp situated in the northern Okavango Delta, comprising two separate satellite camps, each with its own raised dining, lounge and bar area with a vista across the floodplains. The main area emphasises relaxation, furnished as it is with soft sofas and idiosyncratic objects d’art. The 14 rooms, raised off the ground, are unique in contemporary design; the dimensions are square, with extensive use of light, wood and space. Each suite has a large, comfortable bedroom, sunken lounge with cushions, sala, en-suite facilities, an outdoor shower, private deck and plunge pool. Two family suites are on offer, too, with private decks linking the two separate rooms.
Xigera Camp is situated deep within the delta, surrounded by water and lush vegetation. Nestled in riverine forest on the aptly named Paradise Island, Xigera has 10 luxuriously furnished tents (including a family room), a clever mix of wood and canvas, each with en-suite facilities and an outdoor shower. All are built on wooden decks, offering views of a seasonal floodplain and small lagoon. Meals and evening drinks are enjoyed in the lounge and dining area overlooking the permanently flowing channel or under the stars in a traditional African boma. The camp is rounded off with a plunge pool and the camp ‘newspaper’ (a sandpit built into the bridge to capture paw prints) which is ‘read’ each morning, revealing last night’s unseen visitors.

Wilderness Air is proud to be the air partner of Wilderness Safaris, a responsible ecotourism and conservation company with private access to the finest wilderness and wildlife areas of southern Africa. Wilderness Air began operating in 1991 with one aircraft based in Botswana serving two camps in the Okavango Delta. Today, the company is also based in Namibia, Zambia and Zimbabwe, operating over 35 aircraft and employing over 50 pilots. Throughout its time, it has maintained its excellent reputation for safety and guest service. It operates a varied fleet of light aircraft, chosen for their ability to transport visitors comfortably to remote wilderness destinations with dirt airstrips. Each aircraft type has been selected based on its ability to transport different numbers of passengers over different ranges.
