Foreword

Welcome to a world of wonders

I

t gives me great pleasure to introduce the exciting inaugural issue of ‘This is Zimbabwe’, a comprehensive tourism and accommodation guide for our destination.

We are a nation where sport plays an important role. Visitors will find Zimbabweans equally competitive in soccer, swimming, cricket, tennis, rugby, marathons, cycling, sailing, fishing and golf.

Zimbabwe is arguably one of Africa’s most fascinating destinations. Boasting many of the continent’s finest natural attractions, wildliferich conservation areas and cultural attractions, Zimbabwe is an all-inclusive destination with so much to see and do.

If you fancy golf, you will be amazed by our range of more than 50 golf courses, with our oldest course in Bulawayo dating back to 1895. For the fisherman, sailor or water-loving tourist, Lake Kariba is the largest inland manmade lake in the world. And if you want adventure, we have a whole host of adrenalin-filled activities.

Among these natural attractions are the majestic Victoria Falls, one of the seven natural wonders of the world, as well as our jewel in the crown, Hwange National Park, and the equally impressive Unesco World Heritage site of Mana Pools and Gonarezhou National Park. For cultural fanatics, the Unesco World Heritage site of Great Zimbabwe, from which our nation derives its name, is at your disposal. Other natural attractions include the mountainous range of the Eastern Highlands as well as the cave paintings in Motobo Hills and Dombashava.

Cities Our modest capital, Harare, enjoys broad uncongested avenues and interesting architecture. Our leafy second city, Bulawayo, is equally appealing, as are many of our other towns dotted around the country. I would urge all visitors to travel the length and breadth of our country in order to experience our diverse attractions and friendly hospitality.

Road networks and internal air travel are continuously being upgraded. Travelling within Zimbabwe has improved tremendously, with new airlines flying into various destinations around the country. The Victoria Falls International Airport is our new game changer, with many more international airlines registering to serve Zimbabwe. Victoria Falls, Harare, Kariba, Bulawayo and Buffalo Range airports have all registered increases in air connectivity. This means it is easier to fly to Zimbabwe and to travel domestically within our beautiful country. We welcome you to Zimbabwe – a World of Wonders.

A

re you looking for the trip of a lifetime? For a place that characterises Africa and offers the very best in hospitality, sightseeing and culture? Then look no further, for Zimbabwe has it all.

And with visitors being able to view wildlife, including the famous Big Five, up close in one of the many well-kept national parks, it’s clear to see why Zimbabwe is fast re-emerging as one of Africa’s most popular and exciting safari destinations.

There is no doubt that Zimbabwe is a compelling destination, rich in history and heritage, culture and, of course, wildlife. As the country’s economy has stabilised over the last few years, with an average annual growth of seven per cent, the tourism sector, too, has seen a vast improvement, with many discovering – and rediscovering – the much loved attractions of Zimbabwe.

Experience one of the Seven Natural Wonders of the World at Victoria Falls, visit the numerous ancient rock art sites and view the history-laden national monument of Great Zimbabwe. All of this, and more, is just waiting to be explored.

From carefully managed conservation areas and the dramatic Chimanimani Hills to the mountainous Eastern Highlands, the rolling hills of Matebeleland and the waters of Lake Kariba, Zimbabwe’s landscapes are as beautiful and diverse as any.

Blessed with so many attractions and activities, as well as an atmosphere that is unmistakably African, this country is bursting with potential, with so much to offer those looking for an unforgettable trip. This is Zimbabwe.

Wildlife for all

S

poilt for choice with a diversity of wildlife, natural resources and physical landscapes, Zimbabwe’s national parks offer an experience unlike any other. From Hwange to Mana Pools, visitors will find beautiful scenery and excellent game viewing combined with the very best in hospitality.

Chimanimani National Park Chimanimani, bordering Mozambique, is one of Zimbabwe’s lesser known parks. Here, rugged mountains with peaks as high as 2,400 metres are complemented by spectacular gorges. Wildlife includes eland, sable, bushbuck, blue duiker, klipspringer and the occasional leopard.

Chinhoyi Caves Recreational Park Chinhoyi is most famous for its caves, tunnels and caverns. They include the Wonder Hole, a ‘swallow’ cavern which is 150 ft deep; the Sleeping Pool, with an estimated depth of between 80 and 91 metres, and a bottom that no diver has ever reached; and the artificially lit Dark Cave.

6

Chizarira National Park Chizarira lies on top of the Zambezi Escapement in north-west Zimbabwe, overlooking the Zambezi Valley and Lake Kariba. Covering nearly 2,000 sq km, this remote park contains spectacular gorges, plateaux and floodplains along with pristine flora and fauna. The mountains present a challenge for hikers or an ideal destination for 4x4 enthusiasts. Although wildlife is hard to spot here, four of the Big Five (lion, leopard, elephant and buffalo) are present.

Gonarezhou National Park The 5,000 sq km Gonarezhou National Park lies in the south-eastern Lowveld. The Big Five are resident here, but the park is best known for its large number of elephants. The park’s three major rivers, the Save, Runde and Mwenezi, form natural pools that provide a habitat for fish and attract many animals and birds. Hwange National Park
Located south of Victoria Falls, the 14,650 sq km Hwange National Park is

the largest and best-known in Zimbabwe. Set aside as a national park in 1929, it offers an outstanding selection of wildlife and holds a world record for its elephant population. With its abundance of major animals, including the Big Five, the park is the ideal place for a classic safari.

Kazuma Pan National Park Kazuma Pan, in the north-west corner of Zimbabwe, is an extension of the Matetsi Safari Area, developed as a refuge for animals in the hunting season. The baboon trees are a unique feature of the park and attract large numbers of animals. Sightings of up to 2,000 buffalo have been reported. Many animals migrate between Botswana and Zimbabwe via the park, especially from September to the first rains of November or December. Elephant and buffalo are present in large numbers when water is scarce. White rhino can often be seen.

Mana Pools National Park The 2,196 sq km Mana Pools is a World Heritage Site famous for its exceptional safaris. It is part of the 10,500 sq km Parks and Wildlife Estate that runs

from the Kariba Dam Wall. The area is synonymous with the Zambezi River where, in addition to crocodiles, visitors can see elephant, lion, hippo, buffalo, eland, impala, waterbuck, hyena and cheetah.

Matobo National Park Established in 1953, Matobo features an intensive protection zone (IPZ) where large populations of black and white rhino are successfully breeding. Millions of years of erosion and weathering have produced a variety of domes, spires and balancing rock formations. Matobo has a spiritual and cultural significance for local people that can be seen in various ceremonies. Wildlife includes leopard, cheetah, giraffe and antelope.

Matusadona National Park Covering 1,400 sq km and containing a diversity of flora and fauna, Matusadona is located by Lake Kariba. The park has three distinct ecological areas: the lake and the shoreline grassland; the Zambezi Valley floor of thick jesse and mopane woodland; and the escarpment area of julbernardia. Activities range from hiking and climbing to game viewing on the lakeshore, fishing, birdwatching in the Sanyati Gorge, game drives, boating and canoeing. The Big Five are present.

Nyanga National Park Nyanga National Park, embracing Mutarazi Falls, one of the world’s tallest waterfalls at 762 metres tall, is a particularly scenic part of the Eastern Highlands. Nyanga is a hot spot for hiking, birding, horse riding and trout fishing.

Victoria Falls National Park This park is home to one of the world’s Seven Natural Wonders, the majestic falls also known as Mosi-oa-Tunya (‘the smoke that thunders’). Visitors have a choice of a dozen viewing areas. Be sure to take an umbrella.

Zambezi National Park Zambezi National Park, together with Victoria Falls National Park, covers an area of 560 sq km. The northern border of Zambezi Park is formed by the Zambezi River. In addition to four of the Big Five (no rhino), visitors can view sable antelope, eland, zebra, giraffe, kudu, waterbuck and impala. There is a choice of walking, boat or classic safaris.

Did you know? Zimbabwe’s parks are home to over 100 species of mammals, about 400 bird species and some 1,000 tree and shrub varieties.

The warmest of welcomes

T

here is much more to Zimbabwe than the natural beauty of its landscapes, wildlife, national parks and waterfalls. It’s also a land of culture and hospitality. Its cultural diversity ranges from music and dance to food and festivals – all a source of fascination for visitors. And no matter where you go, travellers are assured of one thing: hospitality is second nature to Zimbabweans. From the bustle of downtown Harare to the historical structures of Great Zimbabwe and the Tonga people of Kariba, sightseers can experience the cultural variety of Zimbabwe by visiting each unique region.

Language As a nation, Zimbabwe has three central languages: English, Shona and Ndebele. While English is the official language, it is spoken primarily in the cities and less so in rural areas. Most of the estimated 13 million population also speak Bantu languages, with nearly 70 per cent speaking Shona and 15 per cent using Ndebele as their native language.

Food Zimbabwean food is a must-try for any tourist wanting to experience Zimbabwean life. Most dishes consist of a starchy element and meat or

stewed vegetables. Staple foods such as bota (a porridge) and sadza (a thick porridge) are particularly popular with local people and are made by mixing maize with water to produce a paste varying in thickness. Sadza is usually eaten for lunch or dinner and cooked for longer than bota, which is eaten at breakfast. Both can be flavoured with butter or peanut butter. Other popular and recommended dishes are crocodile, antelope and warthog.

Art Zimbabwean art is among the most sought-after in Africa. Shona stone sculpture is world-renowned and fetches high prices in many galleries, while the

Festivals and events Travellers to Zimbabwe are bound to stumble on a festival or two. The major events include: • Harare International Carnival • Houses of Stone Music Festival • Zimbabwe National Jazz Festival • Harare International Festival of Arts • Jikinya Traditional Dance Festival • Independence Day festivities • Africa Day celebrations • Vic Falls Carnival • Zimbabwean Music Festival • Jerusarema Dance Festival • Zimbabwe International Film Festival • Midlands Arts and Culture Festival Matabele are known for their wood carving. Many hardwood species exist in Matabeleland including the famous Rhodesian teak (Baikiaea plurijuga).

Dance and ceremonies Dance is crucial to Zimbabwean culture, featuring in religious and spiritual ceremonies as well as community events. A notable example is the rain-making ceremony held at Mathojeni, near Bulawayo. There are six major Shona dances – Jerusarema, Dinhe, Mhande, Mbakumba, Shangara and Mbira – each telling a different story. The most predominant Ndebele dances are Mushongoyo, Amabhiza, Isitshikitsha and Ingquza.

• Shoko Festival Many musical instruments are used in traditional dance, the most common being the mbira (a plucked instrument also known as the thumb piano), the hosho (a rattle), the magavhu (a leg rattle), the ngoma (a drum) and, of course, the human voice. Dance is at the heart and soul of Zimbabwe and visitors are often invited to watch or take part in the performances. When visitors are asked what they will remember most about Zimbabwe, many say the wonderful hospitality. Zimbabweans greet every traveller with the warmest of welcomes and the broadest of smiles with no thought of personal gain. This is truly one of Africa’s friendliest countries.

• Traditional and Organic Food Festival • Intwasa Festival • Diwali Festival • Chibuku Road to Fame • Electric Arena • Neverland Zimbabwe • Chimaninimani Arts Festival • Shangani Festival • Nyaminyami Festival

Harare

Safe, friendly capital is a visitor heaven

H

arare is one of Africa’s safest and friendliest cities. Despite being home to over 2 million people, the Zimbabwean capital is surprisingly uncrowded. The city formerly known as Salisbury has one of the most developed infrastructures in sub-Saharan Africa, so you can get around Harare without hassle, making this an ideal destination for exploring tourists. Previously, Harare was often regarded as a stopover for onward flights to other parts of Zimbabwe or Africa, but today it is a popular visitor spot in its own right. Harare is commonly known as Africa’s Sunshine City, enjoying blue skies and pleasantly warm tempera-

tures for most of the year. The exception is the rainy season, which can last from November to March. One of the best times to visit is in September and October, when the famous jacaranda trees are in full bloom, creating a sea of purple in one of Africa’s most attractive cities. Visitors can look forward to genuine hospitality in accommodation that is not only distinctive but, in many cases, world-class. There is an array of top corporate hotels close to the city centre, while intimate lodges and boutique guesthouses can be found in the suburbs. Harare is also a paradise for golfers, with courses throughout the city and its suburbs.

Harare has a wide choice of restaurants offering a variety of cuisine including French, English, Indian, Greek, Chinese, Italian and Japanese as well as Zimbabwean and other African dishes. The capital also has impressive shopping malls such as Joina City, Sam Levy’s Village and Eastgate Shopping Mall featuring top retail brands for entertainment and shopping.

Exhibitions Harare is a place of history and culture. The National Gallery in the heart of the city houses national art collections and international exhibitions and has a permanent display of Shona soft-stone carvings. Harare’s many parks and gardens offer a pleasant

day out with a perfect picnic spot. As well as the National Botanical Gardens, just 3 km from the city centre, they include Harare Gardens, Greenwood Park and Mukuvisi Woodlands. Also in the city and recommended to any visitor is National Heroes Acre, featuring a museum, a burial ground for Zimbabwean patriots, the Statue and Tomb of the Unknown Soldier and the Eternal Flame, celebrating Zimbabwean independence. Its location on Harare hilltop offers fine views of the city and its skyline. On the outskirts of the city, along the Bulawayo Road, visitors will find the Lion and Cheetah

Park, Snake World, Lake Chivero Recreational Park and the Bird Gardens as well as various leisure centres. The Domboshava National Monument, 30 km north of Harare, is a major attraction. The hill is rich in history and has been carefully preserved. Tourists can visit the rain-making shrine, climb Chavaroyi (Witches’ Hill) and see ancient rock paintings. The Balancing Rocks at Epworth are a fascinating geological formation.

in September. Both these festivals contribute to a vibrant six-day annual event which showcases the best of national and international arts and culture embracing theatre, dance, music, circus, street performance, fashion, spoken word and visual arts.

A must-see if you’re visiting the Zimbabwean capital in late April / early May is the renowned Harare International Festival of the Arts which combines well with the Harare International Carnival held

With so many things to see and do, it’s little wonder that Harare has such a strong visitor appeal. This young and vibrant city will continue to grow as a tourism destination in its own right.

Zimbabwe’s second-largest city is immersed in colonial history and is the best place to see and appreciate the nation’s heritage. Bulawayo (often known at the City of Kings), was founded in 1872 by King Mzilikazi, the first leader of the Ndebele people. Today, nearly 150 years later, Bulawayo is thriving. Zimbabwe’s second city is renowned for its combination of Victorian architecture and striking purple-flowered jacaranda trees, making it one of East Africa’s most attractive cities. It’s not just the Victorian buildings that give the city’s its unique ambience, however; it’s their juxtaposition with Art Deco style buildings designed to house new businesses and the growing economy. This is where ancient and modern sit side by side.

Matobo National Park Bulawayo lies within easy reach of Matobo National Park, a Unesco World Heritage Site. Less than an hour’s drive from the city, Matobo is Zimbabwe’s oldest national park – established in 1926 as Rhodes Matopos National Park – and now one of the country’s main tourist attractions.

30

A feature of the park is the Matopos Hills, a series of unique rock formations known as granite kopjes and wooded valleys formed over two billion years ago. The park contains possibly the greatest concentration of rock art in the world, with over 3,000 registered sites. Matobo has extraordinary scenery and a variety of game including the famous white rhino. There are also many historical sites including the burial places of King Mzilikazi and Cecil John Rhodes, Malindidzimu (‘Hill of the Spirits’) and the Mlimo shrine.

Khami Ruins The Khami Ruins lie just 22 km west of Bulawayo. These late Iron Age ruins became a Unesco World Heritage Site in 1986 and are now a national monument. Visitors can visit the site, with its terraces and passageways, in the morning and then perhaps enjoy a picnic in the adjoining Mazwi Nature Reserve. Bulawayo is home to other tourist attractions including the Natural History Museum, the Railway

Museum, the National Gallery of Zimbabwe, herb markets, botanical gardens and the Mzilikazi Art and Craft Centre as well as a choice of good restaurants. Also worth a visit is the Chipangali Wildlife Orphanage and Research Centre, just 23 km from the city, which helps orphaned, sick and abandoned wild animals including lion, leopard, cheetah, black rhino, antelope and many birds. Walk Bulawayo’s tree-lined streets, alive with the bustle of urban Africa, escape to a national park or taste some delicious Zimbabwean delicacies. With culture, history, archaeology, nature, and cuisine, Bulawayo is an ideal destination.

Hwange

Hwange boasts the Big Seven

H

wange National Park is Zimbabwe’s largest and most famous game reserve. Covering roughly 14,650 sq km, it offers the very best of Zimbabwe’s wildlife. This area was once the royal hunting grounds of Mzilikazi, the 19th century Ndebele warrior king, before it was set aside as a national park in 1929. Today, Hwange is home to an abundance of flora and fauna.

Despite being the country’s driest national park, Hwange has a wealth of wildlife including over 100 mammal species and the world’s largest elephant population, all of which rely on water in the pans. Each year, Hwange sees between 20,000 and 40,000 elephants before the herds migrate and disperse to other areas of Zimbabwe and neighbouring countries.

Game-viewing hides Detema Dam Masuma Dam (15 km from Sinamatella) Mandavu Dam (27 km from Sinamatella)

34

Forget the Big Five, Hwange boasts the Big Seven – lion, leopard, elephant, buffalo, rhino and the two additions, hippo and crocodile. Visitors can view the African wilderness throughout the year, but December is the best time to see the cycle of life as so many newborn animals make their way into the world.

Birdwatching The national park is a birdwatcher’s paradise too, with over 400 resident bird species recorded. Hwange is particularly well known for its large population of raptors, protected Bradfield’s hornbill inhabitants and its growing number of yellow-billed oxpecker. The pans attract huge numbers of water birds all year round. But the prime time for birdwatching is from November to April as the migratory birds return from Europe and northern Africa for their annual visit. Named after a local Nhanzwa chief, Hwange National Park can be found tucked away in the north-west corner of Zimbabwe, and just an hour’s drive from the mighty Victoria Falls. Visitors have easy access to Hwange from Victoria Falls via the

Bulawayo Road and can choose from three park entrances: Robins Camp (45 km from Victoria Falls), Sinamatella Camp (105 km) and Main Camp (170 km). From walking safaris to exciting game drives, Hwange offers a safari experience to rival any in East Africa. As one of the best managed game parks on the continent, Visitors can look forward to a secluded and private safari in a pristine environment, without encountering other tourists and vehicles. The park has a wide variety of accommodation, from lavish camps offering ultimate luxury to pocket-friendly options, so there’s no excuse to not visit. ZimParks has created a number of picnic sites with toilets in the park, allowing safari-goers to take a break, grab a bite to eat and stretch their legs in fantastic settings. And the park’s waterholes give visitors an excellent game-viewing platforms and opportunities to see game close-up. Whether you choose a day trip to the park from Victoria Falls or spend most of your holiday absorbing the natural wonders of the Zimbabwean plains, you can be sure of a memorable and truly wild African experience at Hwange National Park.

Hwange

Self-drive While many opt for professional guides in and around the park, Hwange is one of the easiest game reserves to self-drive. But be sure to sure to fill up before you set off. Kariba

Africa’s best-kept secret

W

atch the sunset over the Zambezi River, stay in a houseboat, canoe down Lake Kariba, dine at luxurious hotels and lodges or discover the region’s diverse wildlife. Located in north-west Zimbabwe, 365 km from the capital, Kariba is easily one of the most beautiful areas in the country. The region offers the best of both worlds, with excellent safari areas and pristine waters located side by side.

Kariba’s parks Kariba’s wildlife is a well-kept secret among travellers to Africa. No visit to Kariba is complete without a trip to Mana Pools and Matusadona, two of Zimbabwe’s unique national parks.

38

Famed for its canoeing opportunities, Mana Pools is located downstream from Lake Kariba on the south bank of the Zambezi. Mana means ‘four’ in the Shona language and the park takes its name from the four largest pools, which lie in the abandoned river channels and hold water all year round. In the dry season, wildlife gathers around the inland pans and springs at the foot of the Zambezi escarpment. Visitors to places such as Chitake Spring are likely to be rewarded with sightings of predators in action against thirsty prey. A Unesco World Heritage Site, this unique park is home to a wide range of mammals including all the big cats, 350 bird species and aquatic wildlife. There is a wide choice of visitor activities in Mana Pools including canoeing, fishing, lion tracking, viewing fossil remains, game drives and walking safaris

Matusadona National Park lies on the shore of Lake Kariba, one of the world’s largest man-made bodies of water. As an Intensive Protection Zone, the park is home to several relocated rhinos. Since the lake was established, creating an abundance of food and water sources, there has been a vast increase in populations of large mammals. Today, Matusadona is thriving, with cheetah, black rhino, elephant, buffalo, waterbuck, zebra and impala to be found in significant numbers. As well as game viewing, visitors can enjoy hiking and escarpment climbing, fishing and birdwatching in Sanyati Gorge or go on a boating safari.

History and heritage The Kariba Dam Wall is the second-biggest man-made structure in Africa after the Pyramids of Egypt. Built from 1955 to 1959, the dam is 128 metres

Kariba

high and 617 metres long. It has six floodgates, each of which, when opened, releases water at a rate of 2,000 to 3,000 cubic metres per second. Visitors are urged to seize the opportunity to see the open floodgates in action. You can walk across the dam wall to the Zambian side or enjoy a bird’s-eye view from the Observation Building. Or why not visit Kariba’s museum and learn how the Tonga people worshipped the river god Nyami Nyami, speared buffalo on foot and hunted hippo in canoes. Another well-known attraction is the Chinhoyi Caves Recreational Park. Explore the home place of Chief Chinhoyi, famous for its caves, tunnels and caverns. The main feature of the caves is the Wonder Hole, a large cavern with a collapsed roof that

drops 150 ft to the Sleeping Pool. The crystal-clear Sleeping Pool has an estimated depth of between 80 and 91 metres, beyond the capability of divers, while the artificially lit Dark Cave has a small cavern accessible only to divers known as the Blind Cave.

Kariba’s waters As well as the fine opportunities for safari activities, visitors are encouraged to take advantage of the pristine waters of Kariba. Whether it’s a canoeing safari from Lake Kariba to Mana Pools, or staying on a houseboat with the wildlife just metres from your bedroom window, there is scope for great aquatic

experiences. Whatever you choose as your ideal activity – a sunset cruise, fishing for tigerfish, a visit one of the lake’s many islands (previously hill tops), or joining in the annual sailing regatta or the famous Kariba Invitation Tiger Fishing Tournament – this is a travel destination like nowhere else.

Masvingo Province

Ruins of a royal city

T

he star attraction of Masvingo Province, in the south-east of the country, is undoubtedly the ruined city of Great Zimbabwe.

This national monument, from which the country takes its present-day name, is one of Zimbabwe’s greatest architectural features. Now a Unesco World Heritage Site, it is a fascinating place to visit for anyone interested in the nation’s history. The ruined city is located in the hills near Lake Mutirikwe, 27 km from the town of Masvingo, the provincial capital. Great Zimbabwe was the Iron Age capital of the Kingdom of Zimbabwe, built and inhabited from the 12th to the 15th centuries by the Karanga tribe, descendants of the Shona. The king had his royal palace here. Later, the city was abandoned and fell to ruin.

44

Once home to as many as 20,000 people, the ruined city is made up of conical towers, columns and meandering stone walls at least five metres high. There are similar ruins all over southern Africa, but Great Zimbabwe is the largest and most intact of them all.

Monuments Although the area is best known for the ruined city, tourists will find many other attractions within a 50 km radius of town. As the country’s oldest colonial settlement, Masvingo is home to such historically significant monuments as the Old Fort Tower, dating from 1891, as well as St Andrew’s Chapel and Mutirikwi Dam Wall, both built in Italian style and located 14.5 km from the turn-off to Great Zimbabwe.

Visitors can enjoy a sunset cruise on Lake Mutirikwi or a trip to Kyle Recreational Park, home to over 25 species of wild mammal including buffalo, white rhino, zebra, giraffe, leopard, crocodile and hippo.

Did you know? The very first cricket match in what was then Rhodesia took place near Fort Victoria (now Masvingo) in August 1890.

Eastern Highlands

Holiday bliss

T

he Eastern Highlands region is a natural holiday destination. Rich in wildlife, this beautiful part of Zimbabwe is a place of waterfalls, streams and, of course, scenic mountain views. The area is sparsely populated and has a cool and wet climate.

Mutare Mutare, close to the Mozambique border, is arguably the most picturesque city in Zimbabwe, surrounded

‘It’s time to visit Chimanimani – rugged, lonely and beautiful’ 46

by spectacular scenery reminiscent of the Scottish Highlands. Full of tribal myths and legends, Mutare also has a prominent place in the history of the early European settlers. The city offers an array of attractions including Mutare Museum, the National Gallery of Zimbabwe, Nyati Eco Game Park, Cecil Kop and Thompson’s Vlei Game Reserve.

are often referred to as the ‘Mountains of the Mist’. They offer wonderful views over the coffee plantations and Burma Valley. The Bvumba Botanical Gardens, covering 159 acres and built around perennial streams, are well worth a visit.

Some of the area’s most spectacular tourist attractions are within a short drive of the city centre. The Cross Kopje is on the eastern edge of the city, while the Utopia House Museum is just two miles from Mutare.

Chimanimani is the gateway to the wildest, most rugged national park in Zimbabwe. It’s an ideal location for the truly adventurous. Explore spectacular hiking trails, crystal-clear waterfalls, an untouched ecosystem, breathtaking landscapes and the deepest quartzite caves in Africa. Chimanimani is a place of mystery and magic. A must-see is Tessa’s Pool, a delightful swimming hole on the verge of the park. Or take a dive in the cool pool at The Corner.

Bvumba Mountains The Bvumba (or Vumba) Mountains lie on the Mozambique border about 25 km south east of Mutare. Rising to nearly 2,000 metres, the Bvumba

They include the Bridal Veil Falls, the Arboretum, Green Mount and the Pork Pie Eland Sanctuary. Another jewel in the Chimanimani crown is the Mawenge Mwena mountain caving site.

Nyanga Primarily a tourist town, Nyanga also forms part of the East Highlands mountain range. With its quality fishing opportunities and exceptional golf courses, mountain hikes and holiday resorts, Nyanga is a place of great natural beauty with a great choice of activities. Nyanga is known not for its wildlife, but rather for its verdant scenery, crystal-clear streams and the country’s highest mountain and waterfall.

The Nyangombe Falls are a series of cascades flowing into a serene natural pool (just 15 minutes’ walk from the car park and a popular place for sundowners). Mutarazi Falls present the highest waterfall in Zimbabwe and the second-highest in Africa. Visitors can walk to the

Beitbridge

A gateway to Zimbabwe

Activities and attractions • Archaeological sites • 4x4 trails • Fishing • Game drives

B

ordering South Africa, Beitbridge is a small town located in the Matabeleland province of Zimbabwe. As the busiest border post in southern Africa, the town is predominantly used as a stopover point. But there is much more to do in and around Beitbridge than meets the eye. To the south of Beitbridge, the Limpopo River is fantastic for fishing, as is the Mashilichokwe Dam, which has large numbers of prime bass and bream. If passing through the border post, visitors will have already driven over the Alfred Beit Road Bridge, but it is well worth a second look. The original Alfred Beit Bridge (which now only carries rail traffic) was named after the gold industrialist and opened in 1929. The new bridge was erected in 1995, accommodates a high demand of traffic at the gateway between South Africa and Zimbabwe, and is one of Zimbabwe’s greatest constructions.

Beitbridge is dominated by local Venda people, who are also resident in the Vhembe district of South Africa, and offers a great amount of cultural diversity and historical opportunities. Travellers can partake in cultural tours around the villages, explore rock art and ancient rock formations, view the famous Bushman paintings, or discover the palaeontological sites with dinosaur fossils and footprints, all within a short drive.

Settlement Located 90 km from Beitbridge and built in 1890, Fort Tuli was the first settlement of the Pioneer Column and used by Patrick Selous as a base for hunting expeditions. Tourists are able to visit the Pioneer Grave Yard, the Pioneer Prison, the Old Fort, and the Somlale Ruins. The neighbouring Tuli Safari Area is a protected area and covers four reserves. I

nitially established as a military outpost, the city of Gweru, capital of the Midlands Province, was founded in 1894 by Dr Leander Starr Jameson. Although it is Zimbabwe’s third-largest city, with a population of about 500,000, Gweru is relatively unknown as a tourist destination. Yet there are many things to see and do in the Midlands Province.

Military Museum Gweru is home to the Zimbabwe Military Museum, tracing the history of the nation’s army, air force and police. Items on display include aircraft, tanks, uniforms and medals.

Gushungo House This house in Woodlands Park, Gushungo, is a replica of President Mugabe’s house in Highfield, Harare, and tells the story of Robert Mugabe’s career, from teacher to nationalist and revolutionary to president. One of the area’s top attractions is the Great Dyke, a series of long, low ridges and hills stretching for 515 km. The Great Dyke offers a range of opportunities for visitors, from relaxing tours with scenic views to mountain climbing and gorge walks.
