Each has its own private elevated teak deck sculpted around sycamore figs or jackalberry trees. The essence of the camp is the elephant herd. Guests are ‘introduced’ to the elephants shortly after arrival and are soon high in the saddle for morning and afternoon rides. Guests are invited to become part of the elephant herd during their stay, watching them being fed in the evenings, enjoying the frolics of the babies and accompanying them on foot as they move through the bush. In addition, guests are offered game viewing from open vehicles and mokoro trips. Villa Okavango affords total privacy and luxurious relaxation for a maximum of four guests. Kwara camp is situated on the edge of the permanent waters of the Okavango Delta and shares a common boundary with the Moremi Game Reserve. Owing to the specific location of the camp, Kwara is able to offer, power boating, mokoro trips, walks and game drives all year round. In addition, Kwara is in a large private concession, enabling the game drives to operate both off road and at night. The camp consists of eight luxury tents accommodating 16 guests. There is one honeymoon suite. The camp setting is a tall treed island on the edge of the Okavango Delta. The teak furniture created by Zimbabwean master craftsmen is elegant, comfortable and simple. Most of the tents are raised on teak decks to afford views over the surrounding plains and lagoon with the resident hippos.

Kwetsani is one of the most remote camps in the Okavango and is situated on an elongated island heavily wooded with palm, mangosteen and fig trees. It is an intimate yet luxurious camp raised on wooden decks high above the lush vegetation under the canopy of these beautiful trees. Five beautifully furnished ‘tree house’ rooms, each with its own en-suite bathroom and viewing deck, provide guests with open, airy accommodation of thatch, wood, glass and canvas. The dining room, lounge and pub area, situated under a cool thatched roof, looks out over an enormous floodplain often dotted with lechwe, wildebeest and other plains game. Guests can watch the animals from this deck and plunge pool or from the privacy of their rooms, Kwetsani offers excellent land and water-based activities dependent on annual flood levels. Guests can view wildlife by mokoro, explore islands on foot or experience game drives by day or night. Lion, leopard, elephant, zebra, tsessebe and red lechwe, hippo and crocodile are all found here, as well as animals such as porcupine, aardwolf, serval, genet and bushbaby.

Kwando Lagoon Camp is situated in the extensive 232,000 hectare Kwando wilderness. It comprises eight spacious purpose-designed tents with views over the private lagoon formed by the ever-changing Kwando River. In the dry season, the Lagoon offers a fauna experience unmatched in Africa. Each tent comprises a bedroom area with a spacious ensuite bathroom. The bathroom has a double basin set in an indigenous Mukwa wood stand and a flush loo. The spacious outdoor reeded showers capture the essence of Africa that is Kwando. The tents are furnished in the best teak furniture that Zimbabwean master craftsmen can create. The shady cool interiors are produced by a canvas flysheet under shade cloth, which are also set under massive ebony and marula trees with shady lawns. A small plunge pool is available to cool off in during the long summer days. The resident hippos entertain the guests as they sit in deck chairs on the decks in front of their tents.

Hidden in the south of the extensive Kwando wilderness, Lebala Camp comprises 16 beds in eight luxurious tents on Zimbabwe teak decks. Each tent comprises a spacious bedroom area, bathroom including a Victorian ball-and-claw bath tub and double basin, outside reeded shower, dressing area and side entrance to preserve privacy. Lebala is the Tswana word for wide-open plains and each tent has extensive views over expansive tracts of African plains and wetlands that comprise part of the Kwando-Linyanti flood plain system. This system is an intricate labyrinth of waterways, reed beds, islands, floodplains, bush, scrub and trees. To those in the know it is somewhat like Okavango, but something different, too. The guests arrive near a massive sausage tree and amble over a winding seasonal waterway, using an elevated walkway, into the peaceful lounge and bar area under thatch. The path continues through the thatched dinning area to the pathways leading to personal hideaways and tents.

Leroo La Tau rises majestically above the dry Boteti Riverbed which stretches across the western border of the Makgadikgadi Pans National Park. The park, populated by up to 30,000 zebra and wildebeest closely accompanied by predators, offers guests the chance to experience the exhilaration of seeing large concentrations and the resultant predator interaction. The lodge also offers a raised hide where guests can enjoy spectacular wildlife sightings. With just 12 thatched chalets, each with en-suite bathrooms, a dining room in the main lodge house, a reading lounge and bar area, expansive wooden decks and a plunge pool, guests can immerse themselves seamlessly into the ultimate wildlife experience. A splendid fireplace located directly above the waterhole in front of the lodge tops the night when guests retire from exploring the area and enjoying this spectacular wildlife phenomenon on guided day and night game drives.

Little Kwara Camp is situated on a treed island on the edge of the permanent waters of the Okavango Delta. This new property is an intimate five-tent camp and is consistent with the Kwando Safaris promise of ‘Intimate Camps in Private Areas with Personal Service – Vintage Africa’. The camp is hidden among trees. Access is by air via the Kwara airstrip. While the camp shares its name with the well known 16-bed Kwara Camp, also operated by Kwando Safaris, Little Kwara Camp is a completely separate camp from Kwara. The tents are spacious and are elevated into the tree canopy on wooden decks, each with its own private veranda. Each tent has its own en-suite facilities comprising bathroom with bath and an inside/outside shower. This is an ideal camp for exclusive use by small groups and families.

Selinda Camp is located in the Selinda Reserve, a private wildlife concession of some 300,000 acres in the northern Botswana.

Nestled on a lush palm island in the heart of the northern Okavango Delta, Shinde is an intimate camp located at the edge of Shinde lagoon, teeming with animal and birdlife.

Set in an amphitheatre of ebony and sausage trees on the southern tip of Chief’s Island, Stanley’s Camp borders the southern section of the Moremi Game Reserve.

Selinda Camp is a small, wonderful, luxury tented safari camp situated on the banks of the eastern Selinda Spillway, a waterway that links Botswana’s Okavango Delta to the Linyanti and Kwando rivers and floodplains.

The main lodge’s unique tree house, made of a multi-tiered raised dining/lounge area under canvas and set among the shade of ebony and mangosteen, complements the atmosphere of this original safari camp.

This private concession is located by definition in seasonal delta. The floodwaters arrive around June, although there is often navigable water all year round thanks to the presence of the Boro River.

The shaded camp is raised off the ground and offers extraordinary views over the floodplains and open savannas, broken only by attractive palm islands. These views are among the camp’s most compelling features.

Shinde comprises eight twin-bed classic safari tents, each with en-suite bathroom, hot and cold running water and flush toilet. Every possible comfort has been catered for including mosquito proofing, generated electricity and a private viewing deck – and even a handy flashlight.

The area is home to a wide variety of big game including elephant, giraffe, hippo, lion, leopard, cheetah and wild dog and one of the largest buffalo populations in the Okavango Delta, which, in the dry season, can concentrate into a herd in excess of 2,000 head.

Each tent, strategically positioned, offers splendid views across the delta’s mysterious waterways or open grasslands.

Stanley’s consists of eight classic-styled safari tents raised on wooden decking. Each unit offers en-suite facilities and a private deck. The main building is raised on decking and offers expansive views over the surrounding floodplains. The structure was built into the existing treeline, its main support being a large sausage tree.

Guests can sit on their verandas and gaze over the floodplains of the Selinda, enjoying the passing wildlife as it has been for millennia. Hardly a moment goes by without animals being seen in front of camp. Activities on offer include game drives both during the day and night as well as boating along the Selinda Spillway.`

Shinde offers a diverse range of activities, having the ideal location for water and land activities throughout the year.

After the summer rains – the Central Kalahari Game Reserve completely transforms as the blue sky fills with huge clouds, and the plains and pans burst with sweet grasses. This is one of the best game viewing areas in Botswana at this time of year and not many people to seem to aware of this – so the visitors are few. The CKGR gets animals such as springbok, gemsbok and wildebeest in their thousands and is quite a sight to behold. Predators abound with plentiful lions – especially the famous Kalahari black-maned lion, cheetah, leopard and jackals. Brown hyenas and wild dogs are also found in the area. Several species of antelopes make the trip to the sweet grasses of the CKGR which include the eland, springbok, steenbok, gemsbok, hartebeest, kudu and duiker. Honey badgers are regular visitors as well as ground squirrels and meerkats and many an hour can be wiled away watching these fascinating animals. This should be a definite inclusion to any Botswana itinerary. The 8 environmentally adapted rooms are all solar powered and one of these rooms is a family room. The Tau Pan is in a national park, a very ecologically sensitive area and for this reason no night drives or off road driving is permitted.

Tholo Safaris operates in a privately owned area of 120,000 hectares in the Kalahari and several concessions in the Okavango Delta and the Kalahari. Tholo offers bird and game hunting and photographic safaris. Safaris can be specifically tailored to suit guests’ needs and there are no strict timetables to follow. Tholo Safaris’ main camp has two thatched cottages and three spacious Meru tents, also under thatch, with en-suite bathrooms. The dining room, bar and sitting room is a thatched, comfortable, air conditioned area where guests can relax and read or socialise with friends. There is also a small swimming pool overlooking the waterhole. Many animals come down to the waterhole by day and night, including the resident hippo which lounge around there most of the day.

Toro Safari Lodge is situated on the bank of the Chobe River with fantastic views over the river onto the Impallila Island. It is also in the northern corner of Botswana, where four African countries meet. Across the Chobe river is Namibia, to the east across the Zambezi river is Zambia and to the south is Zimbabwe. The area is called Kazungula and Victoria Falls is 70 km away by road. The lodge offers comfortable and affordable accommodation in the 12 executive rooms of ‘The Enclave’, Riverview Chalet and Standard Chalets, all with en-suite showers, air conditioned rooms with en-suite bath and showers, as well as a luxurious campsite with private ablutions, powerpoints, hot/cold showers, wash basins and fire places. Watch the ever flowing Chobe River from the doorstep and marvel at the wonders of mother nature and watch birds of many kinds drinking from the large pond in front of the chalets.

Capricorn Safaris is a Botswana-based safari company with affiliations in Kenya and Tanzania. It has been running safaris throughout East and southern Africa since 1972. There are two scheduled departure safaris exploring the different regions of Botswana. The Botswana Overland Safari is an 11-day tented safari from Maun which couples the best of the Kalahari Desert with Northern Botswana. In addition, guests can create their own safaris to include the empty reaches of the Kalahari Desert, the crystal-clear waters of the Okavango, a flying safari staying in luxurious camps and multiple country safaris. Capricorn Safaris is experienced in providing tented camping in the classic African tradition with all the comforts of a luxury tented camp, yet still a true African wilderness experience.

Founded in 1997, Capture Africa has successfully designed a mobile photographic safari company which ensures a variety of unforgettable experiences. Being a private, family owned and managed company, special attention is paid to the finest details, including home-cooked meals in the bush kitchen and comfortable furnishings. Mobile photographic safaris entails camping ‘wild’ in Botswana’s finest game reserves and national parks and viewing the abundant wildlife from open 4x4 vehicles. Accommodation varies from comfortable dome tents with camping mattresses to the luxurious Meru-style tents, which are fully catered and furnished with en-suite bathroom. All camps are fully catered and exclusively private. Capture Africa offers a wide variety of other activities including night drives, walking safaris with an armed professional guide, boating trips on the Okavango Delta, specialised birdwatching safaris, game flights over the delta in Cessna 206 or helicopter, fly-in and fishing safaris in the Okavango. Delta Rain offers specialist safaris incorporating the Okavango Delta and the National Parks and Reserves. Delta Rain also offers mobile safaris throughout Botswana and Africa. Located at Sitatunga Campsite, 7 km from Maun on the edge of the delta, Delta Rain specialises in three-day mokoro safaris on the Boro and the Ditshipi rivers, which start from the Sitatunga Campsite. Sitatunga Campsite offers chalet accommodation, a volleyball court and table tennis. Guests can also relax in the bar or restaurant. The campsite offers large well-shaded areas with powered sites and braai facilities. Delta Rain has over 10 years’ experience organising mokoro trips. Using a private concession area run by local people, Delta Rain supports the indigenous population at grass-roots level.

Established in 1983, Drifters has gone from strength to strength to become one of the most formidable forces in tourism in southern Africa. Its packages are renowned for including far more than others can offer, and the vast infrastructure of Drifters-owned game reserves, bush camps, inns, boats, canoes, adventure equipment and other resources mean that clients can enjoy the best of Africa without added expense. All its tours are inclined toward the interesting and often unique fauna and flora of Africa. For this reason, Drifters tours often leave the beaten track to explore remote areas where little or no familiar infrastructure exists.

Safety is the highest priority. Delta Rain is the only company operating mokoro trips into the delta that has direct radio contact with the mokoro stations on both rivers. It also has international medical rescue cover for all its clients.

For those who wish to spend their time on an African safari with a small international group, and who relish the thought of an environmentally educational and adventurous experience, then Drifters is the only choice. Scheduled adventure tour options in Botswana include a 16-day JohannesburgJohannesburg tour, a 15-day Johannesburg-Victoria Falls tour and a 13-day Maun-Victoria Falls option. Drifters also tailor-makes tours as required.

Letaka Safaris was created to provide a safari that guarantees the highest level of guiding. With a wealth of guiding experience in Botswana and its neighbouring countries and, most importantly, an unsurpassed passion for the bush, each trip is designed to give the discerning guest a holistic African experience.

Masson Safaris runs safaris dedicated to wildlife viewing, bird watching and the general appreciation of nature in remote areas of Botswana. Its ecologically friendly approach ensures that its presence has minimal environmental impact.

The safaris provide a variety of products to cater for the individual needs of guests. The most popular are the luxury camping safaris, which include walking and driving ‘mobile’ safaris. Also on offer are safaris using the lodges for those requiring the highest level of comfort. Letaka Safaris is the first company to offer scheduled departures for individuals passionate about birds. And for the wild at heart it offers one of the most unique safaris anywhere, a herpetological trip to northern Namibia.

The company’s senior guide, Ewan Masson, has lived and guided in Botswana for over 20 years. Masson Safaris operates fully mobile camps consisting of large frame tents, en-suite toilet and washstands, camp beds, linen and towels. Land Rovers are used for game drives, which have been extended to offer excellent photographic opportunities. Simon Paul and Joyce Bestelink, owners of Maun Rest Camp and Safaris, operate mobile camping safaris throughout Botswana. Avis Botswana is the only car rental company represented throughout Botswana. Its Head Office is in the commercial centre of Gaborone, with other offices at the airports in Francistown, Maun and Kasane. Maun and Kasane serve as useful links for travellers visiting the prime game viewing areas.

Botswana Development Corporation (BDC) was established in 1970 to be the country’s main agency for commercial and industrial development. The Government of Botswana owns 100 per cent of the issued share capital of the corporation.

In Botswana, all sports clubs, associations and federations fall under the control of one umbrella organisation the Botswana National Sports Council, which has existed as an independent body since 1965.

BDC’s role is to provide financial assistance to investors with commercially viable projects and to support projects that generate sustainable employment for Botswana and add to the skills of the local workforce. It also encourages participation in business ventures.

Its objectives of promoting sport within Botswana and participating in sport outside Botswana are captured in its motto, “Sports for all, for leisure, health, employment and national pride.”

Avis Botswana is connected to the international Avis Wizard computer network, giving it an unbeatable technology lead on its competitors. The Avis Fleet has a wide variety of late model passenger vehicles including economical 1300cc, air conditioned 1600cc and 2400cc automatics and luxury sedans. For the leisure traveller, the range includes multiseater minibuses as well as 4x4 vehicles – the obvious choice for a real safari experience. The 4x4s are equipped with long-range fuel tanks. The comprehensive Avis one-way rental means vehicles can be dropped off in South Africa or Windhoek in Namibia for an arranged fee.

Furthermore, BDC supports the development of viable businesses which use locally available resources, make products for export or to substitute imports, foster linkages with the local industry or contribute to the development of Botswana’s resources and overall economy. As far as possible, BDC wishes to limit its involvement in new projects to a minority interest, but will bear the major burden of development where this is in the national interest.

The BNSC is the government’s way of extending resources to various sports associations and federations including: financial support, liaising with other government ministries and departments, and above all, policy formulation for sports development. The BNSC co-ordinates sports development, coaching and administration, while managing sports facilities and forging links with international sports bodies. It also helps prepare Botswana athletes for international competitions in collaboration with the Botswana National Olympic Committee and national sport associations. The BNSC is funded through an annual grant from government and relies on private donors to augment the grant.

The Mokolodi Wildlife Foundation was formed in 1991 with the aim of promoting wildlife conservation and environmental education for the children of Botswana. Today, it is a nationally recognised educational, conservation and tourist facility.

Somarelang Tikologo (Environment Watch Botswana) is a member-based environmental non governmental organisation in Gaborone. Its aim is to raise awareness of environmental issues through awareness-raising events and demonstration projects.

The first project of the foundation was the creation of the Mokolodi Nature Reserve in 1994 on 30 sq km of donated land outside Gaborone. In addition to naturally occurring animal species such as warthogs, steenbok, kudu and a variety of snakes, several species have been reintroduced, including zebra, giraffe, eland, ostrich, hippos and rhinos. The reserve contains Botswana’s only wild cheetah transit station for the relocation of ‘problem’ cheetahs brought in by ranchers, and four young, orphaned African elephants who are being raised as a joint venture with the Serendib Elephant Orphanage. The philosophy behind Mokolodi Nature Reserve is that income from tourism and the sustainable use of wildlife and natural resources is used to subsidise the conservation projects and the environmental education programme.

ST consists of a small, dedicated staff and hundreds of committed volunteer members who undertake numerous environmental awareness-raising activities throughout the community each year. ST operates through four sub-committees – environmental planning, resource conservation, waste management and PR and fundraising – made up of volunteer members. The organisation has nearly 100 members and donors. They include government agencies, banks, private companies and multinationals.
