A message from fastjet Chief Executive Ed Winter
ON ROUTE TO SUCCESS AND GROWTH “K aribu kwenye ndege yetu”
“Welkom aan boord” I would like to give you my personal
welcome on board fastjet, Africa’s newest airline.
On 29 November 2012 fastjet launched in Tanzania, operating flights from Dar es Salaam to Mwanza and Kilimanjaro. Since the first flight, the positive response to our airline’s great value, reliability and international standard of service has been overwhelming. In just five months we carried over 160,000 passengers, 38 per cent of whom were first-time flyers, and 96 per cent of our flights arrived on time.* Over 30,000 passengers booked early and paid our early booking fare of just $20 plus taxes. In April we launched our first customer satisfaction survey to measure the success of our introduction of the low

FAST AID
dAy oF KindneSS BeneFitS orphAnAge Chakuwama, an orphanage established 14 years ago in the centre of Tanzania by Saida Hassan, has received direct assistance from fastjet staff. The orphanage cares for 40 girls and 34 boys ranging in age from one month to 18 years. Most of the children have been abandoned, orphaned or are homeless. At Chakuwama they are educated from nursery level through to sixth form; but the running costs can be high because they include medical fees, school fees, accommodation, clothing, bedding and food.
The 11th Kilimanjaro Marathon was organised by Wild Frontiers Travel and proudly sponsored by fastjet. Over 6,500 runners took part in the 42.2 km (26.2 mile) race on Sunday 3 March – an important qualifying race for the Comrades Marathon. The runners were cheered and supported by a large crowd of spectators including the fastjet team. Starting at Moshi Stadium, the circular route includes the main road to Dar es Salaam and a long steady ascent towards Mweka before finishing back at the Moshi Stadium.
On 30 March fastjet staff, moved by Saida Hassan’s good work, presented the orphanage with sugar, beans, cooking oil, stationery, exercise books, school uniforms, soda and biscuits. The visit was a great success and fastjet’s commercial manager, Jean Aku, gave the orphanage a further TZS 350,000 to support their fine work.
FASTJET AT INDABA
TRAVEL SHOWCASE Staff from fastjet’s commercial department attended Africa’s travel show, Indaba, which took place in Durban from 11 to 14 May. Sharing a stand with franchise partner Federal Air, attendance at the show was in preparation for the launch of fastjet’s new operation in South Africa. Unseasonably bad weather caused a slow start, but the travel show was soon in full swing and many of the visitors to the stand were travel agents and tour operators eager to learn about fastjet’s fares and products in both the local South African market and Tanzania. In fact, over 50 per cent of all enquiries were from operators wanting to sell Tanzania on the South African market. At dusk we started out for Shinyanga town. By the time we arrived, at 8.30 pm, the rain had set in – a worrying hazard on the remaining leg of our journey. It was a huge relief to arrive finally at the largely deserted terminus in Mwanza at 11 pm. Artist’s wall-to-wall talent brings international fame By Tony Shoo
T
he creative landscape of Africa continues to change as new ideas, techniques and talents
emerge across the continent. Now, as always, its artists draw inspiration from Africa’s contrasting locations and cultural influences; and a constant thread running through many of today’s creative talents is a desire to reflect their heritage, albeit in forms and methods often far removed from the traditional arts and crafts of their forefathers. One such creative is the self-taught painter and muralist Simon Ndokeji, who has attracted an international following with his colourful and lively images inspired by the natural world and culture of his homeland.
experience Simon was born in Isangijo village, Kisesa, in the Mwanza region, in 1962. His first experience of art was at primary school. By the time he was in Class 5, Simon realised he had real talent. And when local people and passing tourists began to buy his drawings, he also realised he could derive an income from his talent.

The same has been true of Ecuadorian star Antonio Valencia, the fans’ player of the year the previous season, who has been pretty hopeless this past campaign. magical manager

Sir Alex Ferguson, who resigned on 8 May after 26 years in the Old Trafford hot seat, had been in his job far longer than any other manager of the 92 clubs in the English Football League. To put things in perspective, the second-longest-serving manager, Arsène Wenger, has been in charge of Arsenal for just 16 years. Even then, and with the possible exception of David Moyes, who now leaves Everton to replace Ferguson, these two are rarities. At a time when the average Premier League manager lasts just 25 months – and often a much, much shorter tenure – Ferguson has shown that continuity is a virtue. Unsurprisingly, Ferguson won many awards and was voted Manager of the Year more times than anyone in English football history. Ferguson bowed out seeing his team play out an incredible draw 5-5 with West Bromwich – the first 5-5 draw in Premiership history.
have until 31 August to secure the players they want. United’s new manager, David Moyes, may want to follow in the footsteps of Ferguson by opting for quality rather than quantity, handpicking one or two youngish players with potential rather than adopting the relatively unsuccessful policy of neighbours and rivals City, who splurged millions late in August. Most of these signings turned out to be money wasted.
enviable The Red Devils have an enviable track record of buying carefully and wisely; but Ferguson hasn’t always got it right, as names like Bébé, Djemba-Djemba, Verón, Kleberson and Obertan can all testify. And some of these involved big money. A forecast for the 2013-14 season? Well, only a fool would bet against United

So what now for next season, with Ferguson no longer running the show? to retain their EPL crown; but, as always, big-spending City and Chelsea are likely to be snapping at their heels. It would certainly make for a better Premiership – à la 2011-12 – if another team could challenge the pre-eminence of Man U.
rivals Beyond City and Chelsea, there are only London’s Arsenal and Spurs who could feature in the top four. Sadly, the EPL has become more of a procession than a competition. But also look out for a resurgent Liverpool, who have been aided by some sharp January transfer-window signings. It may be closer next time, but the smart money will still be on United for the title. And we should expect a much stronger showing in the Champions League.

ho doesn’t like mini-golf? It’s a perennial favourite across all age groups. It’s easy to get
into, of course, because no experience is needed. And with its many challenges, it keeps you on your toes. But there’s another mini Golf that is just as appealing – it’s called the Volkswagen Polo. In terms of style, the car echoes its larger sibling, the ubiquitous VW Golf. But the similarity doesn’t end with exterior cues; it’s inside as well. Open the door and you’re greeted by a soft-touch dash – far exceeding the quality of its rivals – with a layout that mimics the Golf. There are chrome surrounds for the air vents, a Golf-like steering wheel and crease-lines

is the best in the range. It produces only 105 hp, but with its smooth nature and sporty sound, it’s a cracker. It’s enough to punch out the acceleration from 0 to 100 km per hour (62 mph) in a respectable 9.7 seconds; and because peak torque is only 1,500 rpm, the car is happy to pull from low revs. Enjoyable? Unusually for a light car, yes. The Polo drives well; it’s comfortable and spacious; it sounds good, handles well and rides excellently; and, given the level of quality, it’s well priced, too. Simply put, folks, you are looking at the light car benchmark – par for the course with Volkswagen.

Baggage Savvy Airlines have varying baggage rules that can often be confusing and can lead to unforeseen costs at the airport. An outline of the fastjet baggage guidelines will help make your flight smooth and enjoyable.
SOUTH AFRICAN VISAS Visitors’ visas are a requirement for many travellers entering South Africa on a temporary basis. The purpose of visit can be for either business or leisure but is restricted to 90 days or less when using a visitors’ visa. For longer trips a different type of visa is required and information regarding this can be obtained from the Department of Home Affairs. The visa application must be produced on arrival and visitors are restricted to the activities given as the reason for travel during the visa application process. For a smooth trip, ensure that visas are applied for before departure as they are not issued on arrival in South Africa. Moreover, the visa must be fixed to a passport and shown to immigration upon landing. Visa applications do not need to be submitted in person but can be submitted on behalf of the traveller, for example, by a travel agent. There are other visa requirements that must be adhered to for entry into South Africa: • A valid passport needs to be produced which must not expire for at least 30 days after the duration of the intended visit • At least one full, unused page left in the passport • Travellers also require a completed application for visa form • A yellow fever vaccination certificate if over one year of age and travelling from a yellow fever belt country • Documentation confirming the purpose of stay • Two colour passport photographs • A return or onward ticket is also a necessity There is a fee associated with obtaining a visa, this fee can change often but can be checked by contacting the Department of Home Affairs in South Africa. For this and further information on visa requirements for entering South Africa visit www.home-affairs.gov.za
If booked prior to departure each passenger is entitled to one bag that can be checked in and placed in the hold at the cost of R60 or Tsh 10,000. If hold baggage is not booked in advance it is still possible to check one bag per passenger into the hold while at the airport on the day of departure, this is at the cost of R100 or Tsh 15,000. All baggage being checked into the hold must weigh less than 20 kg but if baggage weighs more than 20 kg arrangements can be made to carry it at an additional cost of R50 per kilo. However, maximum weight for any single piece of hold baggage is 32 kg due to health and safety restrictions and no passenger can check in more than 50 kg of baggage. Each passenger is entitled to carry only one item of hand luggage, which could be one brief case, one handbag, a rucksack or a suit or dress carrier. Hand baggage can measure a maximum of 56 x 45 x 25 cm and anything measuring larger than this must be checked and placed in the hold. However, hand baggage must be able to be placed in and retrieved from the overhead lockers safely but there is no weight restriction on hand luggage. If hand baggage is larger than the specified dimensions it will be necessary to check this into the hold at the specified fees and charges. Infants travelling without a seat do not have hand baggage allowance. For further rules on fastjet’s baggage allowances please visit www.fastjet.com

Greener flights through innovative design fastjet operates a fleet of A319 jets manufactured by Airbus as part of the A320 family of aircraft. Identical to the A320 except in length, the A319 is a single aisle twin-engine jet designed to carry 156 passengers. These highly efficient aircraft have a low environmental impact, while the innovative wing tip Sharklets can reduce fuel consumption by more than 3.5 per cent. Moreover, comfort has been improved for the smaller jet, thanks to an increase in overhead storage and a reduction in noise in the A319. In addition, the state-of-the-art A319 has a wide single-aisle fuselage, which gives a generous seat width, thus helping to maintain the high level of comfort that modern air travellers have come to expect. fast jet’s South African launch will be operated by Federal Air and in the short term flights fulfilled by a Boeing 737-300 aircraft until fastjet’s uniquely efficient aircraft is introduced.
