the world. If you work out the maths, as we did, it is easy to assume that Chef Luca must have begun his career at the age of two. Of course, that isn’t possible and neither is it true. Yet, the good chef admits that he was “born inside the kitchen”, tracing his family’s history in the business four generations back. At the age of 16, Chef Luca left home to begin his career in Germany. He later progressed to France, Spain, the Caribbean,

arrived for the first time in Kenya. His passion for cooking translates into an art or what he likes to define as the “design of tastes”. While other chefs may be satisfied with knowing how to prepare one or two signature meals which they are comfortable making, Chef Luca keeps redefining himself – the very reason that he accepted the African culinary challenge presented by the job offer at Tribe Hotel. But before he could open his 32nd restaurant, Jiko at Tribe Hotel, Chef Luca had to study Kenya’s culinary culture for a whole year. “I had to start from zero,” he recounts. “I had to experience the Kenyan menu, see how the meals are prepared and find out what they taste like.”

KENYA ArtS dIArY 2012

Book Worm A quick look at the latest bestsellers

Author: Kenya Arts Diary Group Price: Kes 1,500 First published in 2011, the ‘Kenya Arts Diary’ taps the growing interest in art and culture by being a one-stop showcase of the best of Kenya’s art and artists in a diary format that is practical and usable. The personal diary is designed to accommodate one week per double-page spread. It is printed in colour on high-quality art paper and contains full page colour reproductions of art by Kenyan artists; a section of blank pages in which to write, draw and collect creative ideas; a directory of contacts in the Kenyan art scene; and advertisements from art galleries, companies, institutions and sponsors who support the arts. This second edition recognises East Africa’s pioneer artists, not all of whom are still active artistically but whose work has inspired and influenced the current artistic climate. Jewellery has been included to reveal some of the diversity of Kenyan art.

It HAPPENEd oN tHE WAY to WAr: A Marine’s Path to Peace Author: rye Barcott Price: Kes 1,990 In 2000, Rye Barcott spent part of the summer living in 10 ft by 10 ft shacks in the Kibera slum of Nairobi. He was a 20-year-old college student heading into the Marines who sought to better understand ethnic violence. Barcott listened to young people talk about how they survived amid poverty he had never imagined existed; and there he stumbled into friendship with a widowed nurse, Tabitha Atieno Festo, and a tough community organiser, Salim Mohammed. ‘It Happened on the Way to War’ is the gripping story of this unlikely trio’s journey to build a non-governmental organisation and help develop a new generation of leaders. Their organisation, Carolina For Kibera (CFK), is now a pioneer of the movement called ‘participatory development’, drawing interest from Melinda Gates, Barack Obama and other dignitaries.

PIGEoN ENGLISH Author: stephen Kelman Price: Kes 1,690 Newly arrived from Ghana with his mother and elder sister, 11-year-old Harrison Opoku lives on the ninth floor of a block of flats on an inner-city housing estate. The second-best runner in the whole of Year 7, Harri races through his whole life in his personalised trainers – the Adidas stripes drawn on with marker pen – blissfully unaware of the very real threat all around him. A story of innocence and experience, hope and harsh reality, ‘Pigeon English’ is a spellbinding portrayal of a boy balancing on the edge of manhood and of the forces around him that try to shape the way he falls.

ICE CrEAM IN SoLoLo: Journeys to the Heart of Life Author: rhodia Mann Price: Kes 1,500 Rhodia was born to travel. Many journeys were made within her native Kenya, first as a safari guide and later as an ethnographer. As a well-known jewellery designer, Rhodia has travelled all over African and Asia in her search for rare and unusual beads. A few of her journeys were simply to explore the wilder parts of the planet. A few more were ‘journeys of the soul’ and some of these were rather painful. Rhodia tries to see them all as adventures, with a few hard learning experiences thrown in for good measure. Her life has taken her round the world, quite literally from A (Afghanistan) to Z (Zanzibar). Up and down and roundabout, hers is a fascinating story.

LIttLE BrItAIN starring: Matt Lucas, David Walliams and Tom Baker Production: British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC)

tHE offICE Creators: Greg Daniels, ricky Gervais, stephen Merchant starring: rainn Wilson, John Krasinski and Jenna Fischer Genre: Comedy, Drama, romance

A mockumentary of a group of typical office workers, where the workday consists of ego clashes, inappropriate behaviour and tedium. Michael Scott is a harmlessly deluded and ignorantly insensitive boss who cares about the welfare of his employees while trying to put his own spin on company policy. With an office including the likes of various peers who have their own hang-ups, ‘The Office’ (2005) takes a look at the lives of its co-workers: bored but talented salesman Jim, his mildly sociopathic, butt-kissing enemy Dwight, mildly righteous receptionist Pam and indifferent temp Ryan.

Genre: Comedy

Matt Lucas and David Walliams, the creators of this charactercomedy sketch show, delight in all that is mad, bad, quirky and generally bonkers about the people and places of Britain. Based on the highly successful Radio 4 series, ‘Little Britain’ is a hilarious exploration of the British Isles and its curious inhabitants. The programme travels from the Scottish Highlands, through Wales, the tranquil English countryside and the less tranquil council estates of Britain’s inner cities, while the narrator (Tom Baker) adds his insightful and eloquent comments for those less familiar with these fair isles.

‘The Good Wife’ examines the lives of legal professionals as affected by their cases and work circumstances.
