THERE WAS A COUNTRY: A PERSONAL HISTORY OF BIAFRA
A quick look at the latest bestsellers
Author: Chinua Achebe Price: KES 2,200
Achebe begins his story with Nigeria’s birth pangs and the story of his own upbringing as a man and as a writer, so that we may understand both the young country’s keen sense of promise, which all too quickly turned to horror, and Achebe’s view of the particular obligation of the artist, especially in a time of war. For Chinua Achebe, to be a serious writer is to be a committed writer; to speak for one’s history, one’s beliefs and one’s people, especially when others cannot. A marriage of history and memoir, vivid fi rst-hand observation and decades of further research and refl ection, 'There Was a Country' is a work whose wisdom and compassion remind us of Chinua Achebe’s place as a one of the great literary and moral voices of our age.
A RAILWAY TO NOWHERE
THE CASUAL VACANCY Author: J.K. Rowling Price: KES 2,400
When Barry Fairbrother dies in his early forties, the town of Pagford is left in shock. Pagford seems to be an English idyll, with a cobbled market square and an ancient abbey. But what lies behind the pretty façade is a town of war; rich at war with poor, teenagers at war with their parents, wives at war with their husbands, teachers at war with their pupils. Pagford is not what it fi rst appears; and the empty seat left by Barry on the Parish Council soon becomes the catalyst for the biggest war the town has yet seen. Who will triumph in an election fraught with passion, duplicity and unexpected revelations?
Author: Stephen Mills & Brian yonge Price: KES 4,950 Publication of the present account comes at an appropriate time. Few still living can remember what the country was like before the railway was built, so later generations can perhaps be forgiven for taking it for granted and thinking that it has always been there. 'A Railway to Nowhere' serves to remind the reader that the building of the railway was an act of faith, albeit not entirely altruistic, which has proved a crucial factor in bringing Kenya to a stage of development that could scarcely have been envisaged by those who conceived the project or laboured to bring it to fruition.

GUERRILLAS OF TSAVO Author: James G. Willson Price: KES 3,750
'Guerrillas of Tsavo' portrays the actions of the German Schutztruppe, a force of just 15,000 African and European troops under the remarkable leadership of Colonel Paul von Lettow-Vorbeck, who against all odds engaged a far superior Empire and Allied collective army of 300,000 troops from 21 countries. They occupied an area in southwest Kenya – much of what is now Tsavo West National Park, Taveta and down along the frontier to the ocean. In the fi nal analysis, von Lettow-Vorbeck held the unequalled status of being an undefeated German general in charge of the only occupied British territory of the First World War.

STUDENT DESIGN COMPETITION
Winning artwork will assist war on drugs Students’ Poster Design Competition
I
n April this year The Village Market Management launched a students’ poster design competition with the title of ‘Drug
Free Teens’. The aim was to explore children’s creative ability and their key role in educating their peers about the dangers of drug and alcohol abuse. Under the rules of the contest, participants had to be aged 12 to 17. All submissions had to be original posters using watercolours on pastel paper. As word went round the schools of Nairobi, students got to work and within two weeks The Village Market Management had received a large number of entries. For some schools, this was a serious affair, with art teachers making the competition an end-ofterm exam project.
• Aga Khan Academy – 5 entries • Braeburn Garden Estate – 4 entries • German School – 4 entries • Hillcrest Secondary – 1 entry • Nairobi Jaffery Academy – 4 entries • Oshwal Academy – 39 entries • Oshwal Academy Junior High – 3 entries • Rosslyn Academy – 3 entries • Rusinga School – 10 entries • St Mary’s School – 3 entries • Strathmore School – 1 entry.

Voting for the best posters The Management held a five-day exhibition from 28 April to 2 May during which the student's posters were on public display. Exhibition enthusiasts, relatives of the participants and tourists visiting The Village Market over the weekend had a chance to vote for the best posters in the People’s Choice Award category. The posters were subjected to a thorough judging process by a panel consisting of Hamed Ehsani, managing director of The Village Market; Jyoti Kadri, of Catermart, a Village Market tenant; and Anne Mwiti, a lecturer at Kenyatta University. They were judged on the basis of creativity, originality, clarity of message, visual impact and overall appeal.
Award ceremony and sensitisation seminar Following the exhibition and judging process, the Management held an award ceremony and seminar on 3 May. Among the 200-plus guests were officials from the National Agency for the Campaign against Drug Abuse (Nacada), the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC), the Diplomatic Police Unit, student counsellors, art teachers and parents as well as those who took part in the poster competition.

A bold – and bald – display of solidarity Hair shaving and auction in support of cancer survivors By Damar Padwa
O
ctober is the month set aside internationally to raise awareness of early screening for the detection of
breast cancer, which continues to claim the lives of many women – and men – around the world. This year, the Kenya Cancer Association (Kencasa) and the American Women’s Association decided to observe Cancer Month in dramatic style. Women from all walks of life gathered at The Village Market on 31 October to have their hair shaved in support of cancer initiatives in Kenya. This emotional event made history as the very first of such initiatives in Kenya.

THE GENIUS BEHIND JEANIUS Jeanius was a fashion design competition, organised by The Village Market in June, that paid homage to the fashion culture of the 60s and 70s. It was a fun-filled and creative event for friends and families who love working together. Participants were required to gather a group of no more than four, get a pair of denims (boot cuts, bell-bottoms, straight jeans, etc) and customise to their own taste. They could add patchwork or embroidery or sketch over the denim with dye, paint or felt pen to come up with a creative, hippie-themed design. The competition attracted a large number of entries and the management called in fashion designer John Kaveke and Grace Makosewe, proprietor of Nairobi VIP Parties, to judge them. This followed a separate judging process in which the public had an opportunity to vote for their favourite designs in the People’s Choice Category. Winners of the competition were announced at the Jeanius After Party.

He continues: “To live up to its village theme, The Village Market is characterised by the African spirit of togetherness, sharing and communal life – the seams that held ancient African society together.”
Fruitful These salient cultural features are reflected in the management’s relationship with the Maasai Market traders. Over the years, the management has striven to organise the traders into a professional body with a chairperson at the helm. This transformation has yielded positive results and ensured a fruitful relationship between the two parties. On its part, The Village Market Management provides adequate space for each trader, an identification badge and a branded stall number that helps the visitors. Unlike other areas where they do business, the Maasai Market traders and their buyers are protected from the weather because the rooftop parking area is covered. The management also provides security, especially from brokers posing as translators. Appreciation It is these little acts of appreciation that moved Maasai Market chairperson Joyce Ndung’u to refer to The Village Market as a ‘mother mall’. Joyce, who has been selling her wares since 1992, when the Maasai Market was located at the Globe

Culture from her sales, Joyce has educated her children to college level. Her youngest has been sitting his O-level exams. Like Joyce, John Kinyua ekes a livelihood from selling unique wood carvings. His items stand out thanks to their bold, black finish, which means they can fit into any home or office setting. John, who designs his own wares, has been in the business since 1994 and found a stall at The Village Market in 2000. With the proceeds from his sales, John has built a house in his rural home town of Nyeri and another in Kitengela, where he lives. His elder sons have followed him into the curio business, while his daughter has just graduated from university with a degree in business administration.

Then there are the little white angels made from sisal and the pink flamingos carved from wood. The local and international media have found the Maasai Market well worth covering thanks to its economic, social and cultural impact – a fact that The Village Market is proud to be associated with.
