The words of the late Prof Wangari Maathai – her appeal for people to be ‘like a hummingbird’ and protect the forest – will be recalled by individuals and communities as they mark World Environment Day on 5 June. The Nobel Peace Prize Laureate urged people to get behind the campaign to mitigate the effects of greenhouse and climate change for the sake of present and future generations.

BOOK wOrM RUN FAT B!TCH RUN: THE ONLY PERSONAL TRAINER YOU’LL EVER NEED Author: Ruth Field Price: KES 1,450

Is there a large bottom-shaped dent in your sofa? Is there an eye-wateringly expensive (and rarely used) gym membership burning a hole in your bank account? Does the sight of your wobbly thighs leave you cowering under the duvet? Then it’s time you faced the truth: the only option is to lace up your trainers and hit the ground running. Straight-talking, funny and brutally honest, ‘Run Fat B!tch Run’ will give you – yes, you – the push you need to get out the door, pounding the pavements and shedding pounds in no time. Hate running? No worries. ‘Run Fat B!tch Run’ will give you all the tools you need to transform that passion into real motivation. If you want to lose weight, get fit and become an ass-kicking, get-things-done superwoman, there’s only one thing left to do… RUN!

A TEASPOON OF EARTH AND SEA Author: Dina Nayeri Price: KES 2,800

Growing up in a small rice-farming village in 1980s Iran, 11-year-old Saba Hafezi and her twin sister, Mahtab, are fascinated by America. They keep lists of English vocabulary words and collect illegal copies of ‘Life’ magazine, tapes of TV shows and Beatles cassettes. When Saba’s mother and sister disappear, leaving her and her father alone in Iran, she is certain they have moved to America without her. As she grows into womanhood in the warm community of her village, Saba replaces her lost family with a quartet of surrogate mothers. But life in post-revolutionary Iran is limited for a girl of Saba’s talents. She aches for her lost mother and sister and for the Western life she believes she is being denied. Filled with a colourful cast of characters, ‘A Teaspoon of Earth and Sea’ is told in a bewitching voice that mingles the rhythms of Eastern storytelling with direct Western prose and tells a story about the importance of controlling one’s own fate.

Well, let’s have a look at a few points on what the long-term effects of sugar intake can be: • Can cause weight gain and obesity • Contributes to diabetes

calcium and magnesium • Can increase the risk of Alzheimer’s disease • Can cause headaches and migraines.

• Weakens the immune system

What has changed in society today

• Can increase levels of cholesterol

is the amount of sugar we are taking

• Interferes with absorption of protein • Can contribute to cardiovascular disease • Contributes to osteoporosis • Can contribute to wrinkles and saggy skin

16

• Can cause tooth decay

into our bodies. Sugar is found in almost all processed foods, and as the pace of life is increasing and people don’t have time to make meals from scratch anymore, they turn more and more to ‘ready’ meals, fast foods, pastries and junk food, most of which is full of sugar.

So what can we do about it, what else can we eat? There are many alternatives. Here are a few:

Stevia

• Stevia comes from a plant known as sweet leaf or sweet herb • Contains zero calories and is 100 per cent natural • Normalises blood sugar levels, whether high or low • Suppresses cravings • Increases energy levels • 300 times sweeter than sugar, so tiny amounts can be used for sweetening • Reduces stomach acidity • Safe for teeth • Safe for diabetics.

Xylitol

• Xylitol is found in many fruits, vegetables and berries and is produced in small amounts by the human body. • Has a negligible impact on blood sugar, making it safe for diabetics • Alkalinises the mouth, preventing cavities from forming, and lessens the production of plaque on teeth • Helps prevent ear infections owing to its anti-microbial effects

• Useful for baking and can be used in frozen goods.

Molasses

• Molasses is an extremely nutritious by-product of sugar refining. • A good source of natural sugars • One tablespoon of molasses contains more calcium than a glass of milk • One tablespoon of molasses contains more iron than nine eggs • Molasses contains an excellent supply of Vitamin B • Can be used as a spread, in baking, as an energy booster, to relieve mild constipation, as a nerve tonic and as a nightcap • NOT SUITABLE FOR DIABETICS.

Agave

• Agave comes from a Mexican cactus plant and is available in the form of syrup. • Can be two to three times stronger than sugar, so less needs to be used • Has anti-microbial and anti-inflammatory properties • Contains fructose, which does not cause a high blood sugar spike when eaten • NOT SUITABLE FOR DIABETICS.

• Has the sweetness of sugar without an aftertaste.

Fructose

• Occurs naturally in fruit and vegetables • Does not affect body weight • Sweeter than sugar, so less is needed to sweeten food and drinks • Causes a lower blood sugar spike than sugar

Africa Collects Textiles

T

he Village Market has partnered with Dove International, a Dutch-based non-governmental organisation, in a

pioneer project to collect unused clothing, household textiles and shoes for ‘upcycling’ into reusable raw materials. The project is called ACT! (Africa Collects Textiles) and its aim is to improve the lives of underprivileged groups. The aim is to retain all textiles and shoes in a sustainable closed loop cycle of raw materials. By donating old clothes, people can play a role in improving the environment, creating employment and funding charity projects. The Village Market is the first shopping centre to roll out this campaign. ACT! has set up a collection point at The Village Market outside Nakumatt where shoppers can deposit their used textiles and footwear, clean and dry, in a plastic bag. ACT! then sorts and analyses the collected items using the latest technical and scientific methods to make sure they pass the optimal use test. In this way, international standards relating to ethical and legal regulations are taken into account.

Social responsibility ACT! encourages everyone to donate for a better world. The organisation accepts used trousers, tops, skirts, bed sheets, curtains, T-shirts, shoes, sandals, belts, bags, etc. You can even bring items that are ripped or broken. For every garment and every shoe in the circulation loop, a donation to charity is made by ACT! or the collecting partners. Collected and processed items can be used in the following ways:

‘ACT! encourages everyone to donate for a better world’ reweAr: Processed to wear again reuse: Processed into new products such as cleaning cloths DOwNcYcliNg: Reduction or breakdown into source materials such as isolation and insulating materials

uPcYcliNg: Processed and returned to producers as new material

eNergY: Thermal utilisation. The Village Market is proud to be associated with this initiative.

Where angels fear to tread…

Tyre tips

By Reema Doshi, PR & Marketing Manager, Kingsway Tyres Ltd

S

ince I bought my Toyota ist three years ago, I have serviced my tyres and car reli-

giously to maintain both at optimum level. This includes checking the tyres for the correct pressure, having the tyres balanced and aligned and, of course, the regular car service. During one of my regular checks at our head office branch on University Way, one of the workshop attendants said to me: “Madam, you need to replace your tyres.” I thought, how rude of him, I do not have tyres to replace. But then I realised he wasn’t actually talking about me but about my car tyres.

Smooth driving For the record, the tyres on my Toyota are 185/65R15 – and, yes, I read it from the sidewall of the tyre (proud of myself). I have been eyeing Michelin’s new Energy XM2 tyres since they were launched last year. The offer of a Pothole Guarantee on these longlasting, robust, safe tyres was over at the end of last year. But I was still determined to fit them anyway. Luckily for me, Michelin, having faith in its product, extended this offer for 2013
