A

the SEASON!

fter childhood, the festive season can seem like quite a monotonous, exhausting affair. Gone is the magic that would come with unwrapping Christmas gifts delivered by “Santa.” All that remains is a hectic festive season, where guests must leave your dinner table impressed. As you stare at the pile of dishes in the sink, your children scream around the house, high on all the candy you shouldn’t have bought them. Really, what’s there to look forward to? The festive season can be a drag, but only if you are not creative. It takes a bit of planning weeks in advance to ensure you create the perfect holiday season for you and your family. Try not to do the same old stuff; your creativity makes all the difference. Your simplicity, even more. For instance, instead of a Christmas tree, ask your family to recreate their version of the Nativity scene. The gifts of the Magi can then be the gifts you all get each other. Better still, dress up like it’s Halloween but in festive garb and get your guests to dress up too. Your kids will love it! While entertaining, have a karaoke night with popular renditions of Christmas carols. That should add an interesting twist to what might be an otherwise dull dinner. Don’t forget to share. It doesn’t always have to be with the less fortunate. Surprise your security guard with a gift he/she wasn’t expecting. If you’re the boss, pass by the office and buy breakfast for everyone who has to work over Christmas. Visit the local police station and appreciate the fine officers keeping vigil in case some marauders try to disturb the peace in your neighbourhood. It’s all about the smile you leave on someone’s face and the little one that creeps up yours. So whatever your plans this festive season, make the most of the time you spend with others. Come spend some time with us too!

The kids’ Little Monsters Party included pumpkin bowling, pumpkin golf, face painting, magic and puppet show, bouncing castles and of course, the famous fancy dress competition. The Adults Soiree at the food court featured entertainment by the famous Beathogs band who had the crowd up and jamming to some wicked tunes. The teenagers had their own shindig with DJ Wyt mixing it on the decks. The night was crowned with a spectacular display of fireworks. We can’t wait for next year’s party!

Village Maria Omare: Making a difference

M

aria Omare’s passion for helping children with disabilities started when she volunteered to assist at the Special Olympics in 2008. After carrying out awareness campaigns in her university campus, she decided to do more and started the Action Foundation, an organisation dedicated to providing care and education for children with special needs, especially those in low income areas who are largely neglected and unable to access the services needed to improve their quality of life. “I worked with children in Kibera and realised that, other than basic care, there was a lack of awareness surrounding the plight of children with disabilities in low income areas,” says Maria. That’s when she planned the Butterfly Art Camp in 2012, giving the children there a two-week art experience. “The aim of the camp was to enable the 40 children I was working with to participate in fun art and crafts activities. It would also act as a form of therapy to improve their motor skills and communication abilities,” Maria adds. The challenge of raising sufficient funds to make the camp a meaningful engagement for the kids, however, stood in her way. Maria vividly remembers the day she approached Village Market management to make her fundraising pitch.

CHALLENGES “I remember going for the meeting at Village Market on a Friday afternoon feeling very exhausted. I had managed to raise only KES 5,000 out of the KES 60,000 that we needed by the coming Monday. I spoke to the management about the challenges that the children face, from lack of proper care and stigma, to gaps in healthcare and education, and they immediately came on board and promised me a cheque for the remaining amount. It was unbelievable!” The Butterfly Art Camp was a great success, and with Village Market staff also volunteering on the material day, it was the start

8

“Village Market was the first organisation to support my vision!” of the mall’s long-term relationship with Action Foundation. Action Foundation soon set up a care centre in Kibera, where local children with varying disabilities could receive the care they need daily. Where possible, opportunities for their education, home-based care and orthopaedic surgery are also availed.

CRAFT MARKET “Village Market went beyond monetary contribution and showed that they cared by coming on board to fully support our initiative. A lot of the challenges the kids face are a result of the economic situation of their parents, many of whom are single mothers who find themselves abandoned by their communities. To assist in this aspect we started PAA, a craft market which provides parents with an income-generating alternative, selling items they handcraft. Village Market offered us the space to hold the market regularly and it goes a long way in empowering the parents economically to care for the kids when they are at home.” For her amazing work, Maria was voted alongside other Kenyans in the 2016 Business Daily Top 40 Under 40, a list of young women who have made outstanding contributions through their careers and contribution to society. Action Foundation has had a positive impact on the lives of 200 children, and that number keeps growing. “On 10 December 2016, we will host Walk With Me at the Karura Forest, a walk to raise awareness on the need for inclusion for children with disabilities. I invite everyone to come along and join us in raising funds to support our projects!”

REGUS

how TO FIND THE RIGHT office space FOR YOU

F

or commercial agents, collaborating with a client to find office space that meets their current needs, but can also adapt to what they’ll need in the future, isn’t an easy challenge. This can become even harder when you factor in constraints on space, cost and location. Keeping your approach simple, with five main factors following the ‘SPACE’ acronym, will help to keep your expectations aligned and distil the unique attraction points for the ideal office space.

S FOR SAVING Look for shorter leases and lower deposits, like the ones found when using flexible workspace, to drastically cut overheads. A ready-furnished office can save you up to 60% compared to an empty one.

P FOR PRODUCTIVITY Consider how you use your current workspace. Are there employees who could work from home? The majority of

12

desks are unused for 55% of the time. You can present a smaller, more efficient office space by highlighting the benefits of co-working spaces for workers who only need a desk half of the time.

A FOR ADDRESS Addresses close to your key customers can reap dividends. Regus research shows over 71 per cent of companies globally find that proximity drives customer retention rates and customer satisfaction. Proximity is also a big advantage in-house. 65 per cent of businesses worldwide report that it increases their own team’s productivity.

E FOR EXPANSION In such a charged market, expansion is on everyone’s mind. Over half of businesses in the Netherlands, Germany and Brazil say it’s one of the core drivers of less rigid ways of working. If you’re looking into getting a flexible working space or a short-lease property, draw out the benefits of being able to quickly change the space as your client scales up or down, without having to actually find a new property.

C FOR CLAUSES Go through the fine print. Flexible spaces, for example, can have shorter notice periods. If you’ve found an office with less costly maintenance requirements or fewer limitations regarding its use, this can be a big advantage for fast growth, especially if your company is likely to pivot and change regularly.

PATRICK MAVROS

master

THE SILVERSMITH

P

atrick Mavros is world renowned for his exquisite, handcrafted jewellery and sculptures in silver. From his family farm in Harare, Zimbabwe, Patrick Mavros has created a name for himself as a master silversmith, with his creations on display at his shops in London, Mauritius and right here in Nairobi at Village Market. We caught up with Patrick and talked about his work, and what it takes to create beautiful pieces of art that are only intended to bring joy to those who own them.

How did you get started in your line of work? I did not receive any formal education in what I do. I was conscripted into the former Rhodesian army, and the time I spent in the wild during the war taught me two important things; the reality of human nature and the natural world around me. I then worked as a baker and the man who owned the bakery taught me the importance of a strong work ethic. I made my first piece of jewellery, a pair of rosebud earrings for my wife, in 1978. Her hairdresser liked them so much she asked me to make a pair for her too. She then sold those and asked me to make her another pair. That was the beginning of my journey; creating pieces of art that make people happy. I want people to enjoy what I make for them. I liken my jewellery to shoes: if they don’t fit, they no longer serve their purpose because they make the wearer uncomfortable. I want to create items that make the wearer feel comfortable because they know it enhances their beauty.

How did you make the decision to open a shop in Village Market? I opened shop in Kenya two years ago and Nairobi was an obvious location for me. There is a lot about Kenya that has inspired my work. It’s the home of the most famous wildlife parks in the world and the

20

most beautiful flat-topped acacia trees, alongside elegant giraffes. These are all things that I’ve drawn inspiration from and Nairobi was a suitable choice to pay respect to the place and people that have also inspired a lot of my pieces.

When you started out, did you ever imagine you would grow into such a large luxury brand? Patrick Mavros is often referred to as a luxury brand, but that is not something I had in mind when I began, neither is it something I consider to be true myself. “Luxury brand” is a title given to my work by other people. I think luxury is a relative term. I imagine if I was to make a movie showing what luxury is, it would start with a scene set at Village Market, late at night with a full moon shining. All the lights are off except the ones in the display windows. A man in overalls, carrying his mop and bucket, stops at the Patrick Mavros shop and looks at the items in the window. He spots a pair of silver earrings he likes, looks at the KES 4,000 price tag, smiles and goes on with his work. The next day, he walks in dressed in his off-duty clothes, picks out the pair of earrings and walks out with them in a little gift bag, knowing that he found a great gift for somebody he loves. That is luxury. In truth, I just wanted to create a 100 per cent

African business. One that adds value to the people and communities that inspire it. When I was a child, I was struck by polio and could not walk for a year. That’s an experience that always remained with me and I always knew that I had a part to play in helping those facing the same challenges I went through. Currently, I am involved in large-scale importation of wheelchairs into Zimbabwe to assist people going through what I experienced to regain their mobility. I don’t do this to be a good guy. I’m not a do-gooder. I simply believe that it is my duty to give back in any way I can to the people and environment that facilitated and allowed my success.

Your work is highly detailed. Why do you take that effort to make animals so realistic? I am a stickler for detail. I always make sure every piece is an accurate representation of what one would see in nature. If I’m making a little elephant, I know that elephants have three toes in each front foot and four toes in the back; that’s what I want to recreate. I pay attention to the little things, that’s what I think makes my work stand out. It all starts as a rambling in my mind and I don’t start on a piece with the end product in mind. I get creative as I go along and just pay attention to the details of what I can see in front of me.

Is your work driven by an interest in wildlife conservation? Conservation is an important part of what I do. My inspiration came from spending a lot of time in the wild and observing nature. I want my work to benefit the continent and its wildlife through education and exposure. My pieces all tell a story and these stories are important in conservation work. They create awareness and interest about the different species I portray, which is the starting point for preserving them in the wild.

What else drives your passion to create your art? I am driven by versatility and a willingness to please the customer. Like I said, I liken my jewellery to shoes and they have to be a perfect fit. A Russian customer once came in and looked around and didn’t see anything particular he liked. I walked him out to his car and as he was driving off, he stopped, walked back to me and asked: “Patrick, can you make a tissue box?” It was an item I had not made before but I told him I would do it. I sat down and started thinking about how to go about it and I came up with the idea of a polar bear standing on

a frozen pond, with the tissue coming out of a hole in the ice. I called another Russian friend and asked him what kind of animal he thought a Russian man would like: “A wolf. It’s very powerful,” he said. In the end, I made a beautiful box with a wolf and polar bear standing on either side of a hole in the ice. I was happy with the work because the customer absolutely loved it.

call, not to go through intermediaries hired by a human resource department. I also plan to work on an exclusive Kenyan piece, to be available only in the Nairobi shop, as a sign of gratitude for the inspiration this country has provided me.

What do you envision for the future of Patrick Mavros? I have very simple beliefs. The brand is well known and I have to step back to study the impacts and review the direction going forward. I want to refine my methods and keep producing beautiful pieces of adornment and sculpture. My sons have been involved in the business for a while and, as the founder and senior member, I hope to hand over more responsibility to them as they also grow in their capabilities. I was never deprived of the opportunity to be a frontiersman and I cannot deny them the opportunity to do the same. I have no intentions of growing into a big corporate business – this is a family business. I want my customers to be able to talk to a Mavros when they

Patrick Hennessey When Patrick Hennessey returned home from Afghanistan, he left behind him the surreal intensity and exhilaration of the battle. He also left behind lasting bonds of friendship formed with his Afghan comrades Qiam, Syed and Majhib. Kandak is the story of how, in the heat of the moment between living and dying, alliances can be forged. Patrick Hennessey tells of their awkward first meetings, mutual suspicion and incomprehension, and how this eventually turned into brotherhood.

NEW BEGINNINGS Introduction by Helen Fielding

On the 26th of December 2004, an earthquake under the Indian Ocean created a series of devastating tsunami waves. Over 280,000 people have been reported dead so far and many survivors lost everything. To assist in the aftermath of this terrifying natural catastrophe, sixteen celebrated writers gave work from their forthcoming new books, plus previously unpublished stories and poetry, to New Beginnings. They include: Margaret Atwood, Maeve Binchy, Tracy Chevalier, Harlan Coben, Paulo Coelho, J. M. Coetzee, Nicholas Evans, Mark Haddon, Nick Hornby, Marian Keyes, Stephen King, Alexander McCall Smith, Ian McEwan, Vikram Seth, Joanna Trollope and Scott Turow.

For the last few decades, HRT has been seen as the universal panacea for women going through menopause – and the only effective option for hot flushes. But research now shows that HRT has potential risks and that a holistic approach, drawing on diet, exercise, natural medicine and complementary therapies as well as conventional treatments if needed, has been proven to be just as effective. Top gynaecologist Michael Dooley has pioneered this integrated philosophy and, together with leading health journalist Sarah Stacey, explains how to create a treatment plan that’s right for you. Steering a clear course through the most up-to-date research, Your Change Your Choice gives you the information and insight you need to make informed decisions and come through happy, healthy and full of zest for life.

REVERSE YOUR BAD KARMA: THE GOOD THING TO DO FOR THE BAD THING YOU DID Elle Doright

Let’s face it, with temptations lying around every corner, it’s damn near impossible to be on your best behaviour all the time. Now, with this book, you can spare yourself future misery with charitable deeds that offset any negative karmic effect. It doesn’t matter if you didn’t replace the toilet paper when you finished the roll or caused the collapse of the Euro, a simple flip of the page to any rude, lewd, or just plain mean act grants you a redeeming task to retract your wrongdoing.

Nyama Mama:

KENYAN CUISINE UNIQUE TWIST

with a

Nyama Mama is now open at Village Market. The food outlet is the brain child of Jay and Nina Shanghavi, directors of The Good Earth Group. Nyama Mama serves distinct Kenyan dishes with an international twist. We had a chat with Priyan Kolapara, Operations Director of the company, and got a peek into the vision behind the brand that seeks to make Kenyan cuisine go international, by adding a touch of sophistication to simple dishes. Nyama Mama: Kenyan dishes with a twist

24

How was the idea for Nyama Mama conceived? Jay and Nina had the idea to start a chain of restaurants in June 2015. They wanted to create something that would put Nairobi on the international food scene and, along with two other partners, they started The Good Earth Group. Nyama Mama is the first brand launched by the company and was created to serve delicious meals made with Kenyan ingredients but with a western twist. Village Market will be home to our third outlet which will be open from November 2016.

What is the most unique part of the Nyama Mama dining experience? Every dish at Nyama Mama has a Kenyan influence and identity. We recreate dishes using a variety of local ingredients and add a touch that makes them unique to our menu. We also serve unique cocktails that are specifically created for Nyama Mama and cannot be found on any menus anywhere else. Our pres-

entation is also a defining factor for us. The metal vikombes our cocktails are served in are unique to any fine dining experience and will definitely take you back to your roots and remind you of dining upcountry at grandma’s house.

What are some of the popular dishes and drinks and on your menu? Ugali fries have been one of the most popular items on our menu. They are a delicious remake of the staple food that most Kenyans love. Our choma is also a very popular menu item. Unlike the traditional version, at Nyama Mama it comes with a choice of eight different and delicious sauces. The Mama’s pork ribs with Jack Daniel’s sauce is an absolute favourite. We also serve different stews and specials every day so there’s always a variety, and you can try something new each time you dine with us. Among our signature cocktails, Mama’s mule is one of the favourites. It’s a mix of Ketel One vodka, Kisampa honey, mint, lime and fresh ginger. Served in a metal cup, there’s nothing like it anywhere else.

What should anyone curious to try your menu expect? At Nyama Mama, we guarantee a totally unique dining experience. The food and cocktails cannot be experienced anywhere else. We are elevating Kenyan cuisine to a higher level and we definitely expect to put Nairobi on the map as one of the food destinations that provides excellent local meals of the highest standards.

Favourite: Mama's pork ribs and Jack Daniel's sauce

he festive season is here with us again – a time to make merry and appreciate our family, friends and loved ones. With all its good cheer, the festive season also sees an increase in the number of road accidents. Some of these are as a result of drunken and reckless driving, speeding, as well as poor vehicle maintenance. The current state of our roads, coupled with our road rage, also contributes towards the road accidents we find ourselves involved in. Crime also tends to be at an all-time high during this season. Carjacking and theft, especially by motorcycle gangs, are some of the incidences one should watch out for. So what can you do to keep you and your family safe on the road?

MAINTAIN YOUR VEHICLE: Drive a road-worthy car by regularly getting it serviced and replacing worn-out parts. Before setting off on a long drive, ensure your car’s lubricants are at the right level, your mechanical and electrical parts are working correctly and that your tyres are in good tread, alignment, balance and pressure. Confirm that you have all your tools – especially a serviceable spare wheel,

jack, spanner, lifesavers, first aid kit, fire extinguisher, flashlight, jumper cables and any other lubricants you that may come in handy along the way.

are being followed, don’t drive home. Instead, drive to a safer location such as a police station. While there, you can ask to be escorted to your destination.

CHECK FOR SPEED LIMITS: The traffic act dictates what speed limit you should maintain on highways and within the city. These rules are in place to ensure that you can manoeuvre your vehicle while being in control of it. Remember, you are not the only one using the road – there are pedestrians and cyclists as well, so be mindful of other road users. Leave in good time to reach your destination safely and with peace of mind.

GET SOME REST: A good night’s rest is always good before a long drive. Even then, and where possible, take turns driving so everyone that gets a turn to drive gets some rest too.

GET A CAB: Leave your car at home if you plan on going out for a drink. Otherwise, appoint a designated driver. Your life and that of your family and friends depends on it. AVOID DISTRACTIONS: Texting while driving, talking on the phone while driving, passing that bag of chips while driving, having your baby on the driver’s seat while driving…all big no-nos. Keep your eyes on the road. Always have a 360 degree view around you by constantly utilising your car mirrors. If you sense that you

KEEP YOUR COOL: There will always be crazy drivers out there. Matatus and motorbikes have a tendency of getting on our nerves. Let it go. Don’t be dragged into a lewd shouting or “sign-language” match. Report any reckless driving you come across to the authorities. Accidents and incidences happen every day – someone outside of our control but most within our ability to avoid them. In a bid to help you stay safe on the road, Kingsway Tyres has partnered with TOTAL Kenya to give you a free oil-lubricants check in all of our 22 branches countrywide. You can also get a free tyre and battery check as well for peace of mind, as you set off into a brand new year. Happy Holidays to you all from everyone at Kingsway Tyres!
