ost of us would like to believe that our moms would be lost without us. Truth be told, we would probably be lost without them. No matter how old we get, we could all use some good old advice and comfort from our mothers. But the mushy stuff aside… We all grew up seeing our mothers with an item or two they absolutely couldn’t go without. It could have been a scarf, or a pair of shoes she always wore. Perhaps a dinner set she cherished or a detergent she always used. Remember that favourite tea cup or that bad-tasting remedy for hiccups that she swore by? And how can we forget the old slipper that came swinging from nowhere, when you needed a good spanking. Whatever it is, our mothers always had (still have) these little items that made life much easier for them. So we got some of you tell us about your mom must-haves; to reminisce on the good old days and have a little laugh. More than 20 years later, Village Market remains the go-to mall for mothers who wish to get their shopping done in one place. On weekends, it’s also a family space to entertain the family or a chill spot for moms looking for some time out. It is for this reason that we look forward to hosting you and your mom this Mother’s Day. You deserve it!

Village VILLAGE MARKET OFFERS SUPPORT TO THE KENYA DIABETES MANAGEMENT & INFORMATION CENTRE

D

iabetes is a major global public health concern that affects over 415 million people worldwide. In Kenya, an estimated 3.2 per cent of the population, which is about 1.3 million people, are thought to be living with diabetes. The Kenya Diabetes Management & Information Centre (DMI Centre) is a not-for-profit registered medical charity founded in May 1999, with the aim of educating the public about diabetes. The Kenya DMI Centre was created in response to the alarm raised by the International Diabetes Federation and practising experts about the rising numbers of people diagnosed with the condition.

AWARENESS Eva Muchemi is an Executive Director at the Kenya DMI Centre, which works to develop and deliver programmes for creating public awareness about prevention, diagnosis and management of diabetes. “My main motivation has been to assist people in preventing diabetes, diagnosing the condition early and managing it for a better quality of life,” says Eva. “My late father, who is my driving force, was diagnosed late and already with complications, so he died miserably because of this. Had we gotten proper information early, we probably would have realised he had symptoms of diabetes early and saved his life.”

8

The centre, in partnership with various organisations and corporate partners, undertakes various community based activities to address the diabetes crisis in the country. “We give our services in all parts of the country through various projects for adults and for children and young people. We partner with the national government, the counties and the local hospitals in our area of operations,” Eva says. These activities include countrywide medical camps that have been held since 2005 and have successfully screened over 400,000 people. The centre also has an ongoing awareness and screening program, the highlight of which is the Diabetes Walk, held every June. The Kenya DMI Centre faces challenges in its battle against diabetes. The most common, according to Eva, is the competition for limited resources, which especially affects funding for the prevention programmes. “There is also an emphasis on teaching people about

DONATION: Village Market presents a cheque to the DMI-C DIRECTOR: Eva Muchemi giving a speech

communicable diseases, which allows myths and misconceptions about diabetes to spread. Offers of ‘a cure’ by traditional healers is an example of problems that arise from this,” she adds. Late diagnosis also drastically affects the centre’s work, since most patients have complications that are very costly to manage.

SUCCESSES Despite these challenges, the Kenya DMI Centre counts several successes as it continues to lead in the campaign against this condition. “Some of our achievements so far include the training of professional healthcare providers of all cadres in various counties. We also set up a mentorship clinic at the Machakos Level 5 Hospital where other counties will have one week of training on how to run their diabetes clinics,” says Eva. “Since 2009, we have also set up and equipped diabetes and diabetic foot care clinics at various hospitals. Furthermore, we have started a project to provide insulin and other supplies to children in need at no cost,” she adds. Asked about her outlook for the future of the Kenya DMI Centre, Eva is optimis-

Village CARES

ACTIONAID KENYA tic that major gains will be achieved. “In a few years, we hope that access to insulin, a life-saving drug, will be universal and at no cost to patients. We also hope to have diabetes prevention and awareness programmes all over the country. Proper allocation of resources from the Ministry of Health for noncommunicable diseases (NDCs) will also be a major task we hope to accomplish. When we have blood sugar tests done at random, like malaria tests, and have emphasis on testing pregnant women and following up on them and their children, we will be much closer to bringing diabetes under control in Kenya.” Village Market recently donated KES 100,000 towards Kenya DMI Centre’s fundraising activities.

ctionAid Kenya is a non-partisan, ACTIONAID: non-religious development Helping to end organisation that has been working poverty in Kenya since 1972 to end poverty and injustices. It is among the leading anti-poverty agencies working directly with over one million poor and excluded people in over 14 counties.

WOMEN'S RIGHTS ActionAid Kenya is unapologetic in advancing women's rights. It promotes women’s rights to land and access to gender responsive public services in partnership with women living in poverty and exclusion and their institutions. ActionAid Kenya is also committed to working with women, children and youths to claim and realise their constitutional rights. In the past year, ActionAid Kenya’s partnership with the

women movements led to the reporting of 473 cases of violence against women and girls which are being followed up by the women movements. Cases of women facing land evictions have been presented to the National Land Commission and Ministry of Lands for resolution. More than 90,000 people living in poverty and exclusion have raised their income through income generation programmes. ActionAid’s drought response has so far provided food and water to more than 90,930 community members in Isiolo and Kitui counties. With the ensuing drought impacting 23 counties in Kenya, ActionAid has initiated resource mobilisation to support 220,000 people in 10 of those counties. It has so far delivered food to 96,000 people and is working towards developing sustainable water sources and alternative income generation for the affected communities. This support also entails enhancing women leadership and prevention from sexual abuse during emergency. ActionAid Kenya is partnering with Village Market to provide an activation platform for ActionAid Kenya to reach out to a bigger audience and the general public to reach out to more deserving Kenyans.

OH

mama!

my

THINGS CAN'T LIVE WITHOUT

mom

Moms: quite possibly the most loved and loving creatures in the universe. They’ll do just about anything to keep their children well fed, healthy and happy. Over time, moms form an identity only we children know best. It could be in the things they do or say or almost always have with them. This Mother’s Day, we asked a couple of you what things your mom cannot live without… My mom lives in the village. She will turn 70 years this year. My mom cannot do without her chicken, goats, sheep and her shamba. Apart from making little profit from the eggs, manure and meat, these things keep her busy. Christina Mwandeghu My mom cannot do without me!!!! Shabnam Yusuf Things my mom can’t do without: • Prayer: She believes prayer is the only thing a family should depend on • A leso/kanga: Always in her handbag for emergencies • Her headscarf: Not having her head covered is a show of disrespect • Rubber shoes: Specifically, ngoma from Bata shop “the only comfortable shoes ever made” • Dried meat (athola): For visitors who show up unannounced

10

• Chair and tablecloths: To protect her furniture. Peris Oloo My mother is a workaholic. It’s her passion and it keeps her sane. By the way, she is a kindergarten school teacher. Damar Padwa My mother cannot live without her morning walk. Every morning she wakes up before the sun rises to enjoy the quiet before the business of the city erupts. When she comes back and joins the rest of the family for breakfast, she tells us about her observations while on her walk. In my view, she cannot live without the walks as she loves the peace and quiet to herself before her busy day but it is also a great way to keep fit. No wonder she looks 21! Aram Laloui Tea. Very hot is how she likes it; it doesn't matter whether the sun outside is scorching, she will only have her tea if

it's steaming hot. Sinking herself in the comfy sofa, usually after a hard day's work, eyebrows raised, she leans forward and manages a faint smile as her full lips meet the brim of the humongous mug to sip the creamy hot, white tea. Her beautiful smile brightens with every sip of her beloved tea. A daughter cannot help but be jealous. How can a simple cup of tea bring her so much joy? I wonder. After a little while her cup is dry and empty, and without hesitation I refill it and it overflows again. She nods in appreciation. Truly, mommy cannot live without her hot tea. Pauline Darria Odipo My mom cannot live without her sense of humour. She makes the most frustrating situations manageable. Ma is a cheerful person who spreads positivity all around. Even when I am upset, she always entertains me with the daily stories of the mishaps her school kids get into. Ekta Sharma

My mom cannot do without her Bible… Daniel Muriki My mom cannot live without praying for us, every day. I live well knowing my dad, my siblings, I and our children are loved. My mother cannot go a day without calling just to say hi. Veronica Kabugi My mom can't live without her social life. Meeting, greeting, chatting and making new friends is definitely one of her talents. From lunches to teas, to soirées, my mom loves being social. Her warm, bubbly personality makes her a joy to have at any occasion! Lots of love Ma! Eesha Nayar My mom cannot do without her phone. She always wants to stay connected to her children. Caroline Mayende

There are two things my mom can't live without: her morning cup of tea and good morning kisses for my brother and I before she leaves for work. It may sound cheesy, but it's true. If for any reason she misses kissing us good morning, she'll call as soon as she gets to work with a full explanation as to why. It's hilarious and sweet. I'll never get tired of it. Priyanka Shah

My mom cannot do without lip balm. As she likes to put it, ‘’not only does it prevent and repair chapped lips, it also removes mascara streaks, soothes raw nostrils and entertains her very young grandchildren”. Milena Nichols

My mom cannot do without her sugar. John Mwangi

Toothpicks! She takes them with her everywhere. Whips a pack out of her handbag in the most random of places. I thank every toothpick-maker out there keeping my mother happy. Ann Gitari

My mom cannot do without two things: 1: Loving me unconditionally 2: Her phone, because she is able to text, call, say hi to her daughter in-law and grandchildren, get updates and the latest gossip. Walter Agama

My mom can’t live without baking cakes. I truly believe she is happiest in the kitchen and every time I see her since I’ve moved away from home, she has some kind of cake treat for me: brownies, sponge cakes, cheesecakes, chocolate cakes…she just really loves baking! Kirsten Alexander

TINTORIA

TAKING CARE OF AND CLOTHES

drycleaners

customers

Tintoria is one of the most recognisable names in Kenya when it comes to the dry cleaning industry. Mrs Patience Nyaoga, Managing Director of Tintoria Ltd, spoke to Village Beat about her business and achievements, for which she recently was awarded.

Tell us a little bit about Tintoria. Tintoria is a leading dry cleaning and laundry service company with several branches in Nairobi, including one at Village Market. We offer a wide range of cleaning services, including laundry services for commercial institutions, cleaning of car seat accessories and minor tailoring and repairs. Our niche is executive dry cleaning for individual clients. We specialise in cleaning items that need special care to retain their form and shape. We take care of your valued items of clothing to make sure they look good as new every time you bring them in for cleaning.

What would you say is the most unique aspect of Tintoria’s services and processes? At Tintoria, we place a premium on quality. Our location is equipped with high quality modern machinery to ensure superior quality. We also use specialised detergents and chemicals that treat every garment with the level of sensitivity required to clean it, while retaining all its original characteristics. We also have a customer care hotline where complaints and issues can be addressed promptly. I believe that a satisfied customer is a loyal customer, and the best way to retain a customer is to provide them with the best quality possible.

12

You were listed among Amazons Watch Top 100 most influential women in emerging economies and were awarded the CELD Global Inspiration Women Leadership Award in 2016. What was your reaction to these accolades?

As a woman in business, I find it important to give back to society, even as I succeed in my personal endeavours

Yes, I was very surprised to receive the letter that said I was receiving the award for contributions to development in the African region, and was to be inducted into the Global Women Leaders Hall of Fame. It was a great honour to be recognised for the things I am passionate about. I believe that it is very important that we do a lot more work in empowering women and the marginalised groups in our society. As a woman in business, I find it important to give back to society, even as I succeed in my personal endeavours. Success is about more than accumulating wealth for oneself. We should always give back and benefit the community as a whole.

What should every new customer expect at Tintoria?

This issue of Village Beat is dedicated to moms. Any final words you would like to share with them?

The brand experience at Tintoria is quality and personalised service. I was a customer at Tintoria before I became the owner of the business, and I identify strongly with the need to offer the best service. Clothing is an important part of our personal identity, and when they are clean and well taken care of, it goes a long way in boosting our image. Every customer should simply expect specialised care for their items by qualified and friendly staff, at competitive rates.

I am a mother of three sons and my family has been an important part of my life and career. Everyone is different and places their family at a certain level of importance in their life, but the satisfaction of motherhood cannot be replaced by anything else. I would like to tell all mothers who are also involved in business that it is not impossible to succeed in both aspects of life. Once you find your balance and commit to each one as required, you will be on the way to all round success.

n Italian, the word Tiramisu means ‘lift me up’ or ‘cheer me up’ and that’s exactly the atmosphere one feels at the cosy bakery within Village Market’s food court. Besides breads, Italian tarts and desserts, Tiramisu now offers a range of American style layered cakes, muffins, cupcakes and cheesecakes. Early birds can also catch breakfast – sandwiches and piadinas (thin Italian flatbreads), or a full English breakfast for just KES 450.

QUALITY Anyone who truly appreciates quality food made with fresh ingredients and lots of love is certain to find something for their palate at Tiramisu. Wedding planners, corporate organisations and those celebrating birthdays can make their large and small orders at Tiramisu. THAI

village Thai Village, under the Khazanah Group, serves authentic Thai cuisine. Group CEO, Bobby Aroura, tells us what to expect at the top-notch Thai restaurant.

T

hai Village specialises in authentic Thai cuisine. Our credo is five-star food at three-star prices. We have a master chef with previous experience preparing Thai food in five-star hotel kitchens. Our focus is on quality and authenticity, so we use the best ingredients and make our own sauces from scratch using the best quality ingredients imported from Thailand. We opened at Village Market in 2013 and we have always worked to be the best when it comes to Thai food.

VARIETY Our signature dishes include the Som Tam, a spicy salad made from papaya. We also have a variety of seafood salads. The red curry and green curry are popular menu items. They’re made from red and green chilli respectively with coriander, Thai ginger and lime leaves giving each dish a unique and delicious flavour. Thai food is incomplete without noodles, and we serve a variety of noodles including rice noodles and spicy or non spicy options. We also have signature soups such as Tom Yum, sweet and sour, and Tom Kha Gai (coconut soup). The soups come in various options including pork, chicken and spicy. There is everything for every taste and preference. Our lobster is pan fried in the authentic Thai style which doesn’t use butter. This makes it very healthy. It’s served with a portion of rice or

20

noodles. The best thing about our lobster dishes has to be the price. For a fraction of what it costs to eat lobster at a five-star restaurant, we offer our customers high quality, authentic Thai style lobster. Thai Village serves the best and freshest meals. Every dish is made to order, and customers allowed to customise their meal to include what they like and omit anything they may be allergic to, such as peanuts and seafood. You can select what suits your tastebuds and it will be made to exceed your expectations.

So

SOFRA Sofra brings a wide variety of Mediterranean cuisine to Village Market. We had a word with Davison Ivusa, the proprietor of Sofra, about what makes Sofra the go-to restaurant for seafood lovers and those looking for delicious shawarma in Nairobi.

Which menu items rank as your personal favourites? The mushroom steak is my favourite any time. It’s a delicious fillet, grilled and served with mushroom sauce. It goes well with a side of fries, mashed potatoes and depending on my mood I also enjoy it with ugali. I also love the chilli-coated chicken wings.

What is Sofra all about? Sofra opened at Village Market in 2004 to offer Mediterranean cuisine. The word ‘Sofra’ is Turkish for ‘get together’. Seafood and white meat are our specialties. We serve our dishes grilled, which is a very healthy option because it’s low in fat. Our menu is completely halal and provides a wide range of choices that one can enjoy with family or friends.

What are some of the fan favourites among Sofra’s customers? Our most popular menu items are the tilapia fillet, calamari rings, grilled calamari, lobster, crab and prawns. The mixed platter is a favourite choice for groups of customers who would like to share a meal. The seafood platter includes all the different kinds of seafood on the menu, and can be custom made to suit diner preference. The Sofra mixed platter includes each of our meat dishes such as the lamb and chicken. We also serve lamb and chicken shawarma which is a popular option. The salads on our menu include the Greek salad and chicken salad, which are popular with those who prefer a light and healthy meal. Our fruit juices are freshly made as you watch and are a customer favourite, too.

22

Village Market is a great location for any eatery. Why did you choose to locate Sofra here?

shawarma is very convenient and can serve a large number of guests at a much lower cost. We have provided this service to several of the foreign embassies around the area, and it is a preferred option for many of them. We also provide delivery services, so you can enjoy our meals from the comfort of your home whenever you like.

What makes dining at Sofra a special experience? At Sofra, we encourage close communication between the customer and the chef. Personal requests and preferences are taken as a priority and we do everything we can to ensure that the customer gets exactly what they want. Our menu is flexible and the chef can adjust each order to meet every diner’s specifications. This ensures that our customers get the most value out of their experience.

We chose Village Market because of its central location in a very cosmopolitan neighbourhood. Our menu serves families and large groups well, so it’s the perfect place for us. Sofra offers outside catering for functions and our specialty in catering is the shawarma. Unlike the traditional outside catering buffet, the

TYRE TIPS:

HOW TO

drive safely

ON WET ROADS By Reema Doshi

riving during the rainy season exposes drivers to conditions that dramatically increase the chances of being involved in accidents. Wet roads present challenges such as less grip and longer stopping distance. Here are some tips to help you manoeuvre wet roads:

AVOID SLIDING In the rain, your front or rear tyres won’t follow in the direction you are steering. Slow down before turning, and maintain a constant speed throughout the turn. DO NOT make any sudden steering wheel movements.

THE RULES OF BRAKING Only brake in a straight line before turning, and do so gradually. If you must brake at a turn, exercise caution. Increase your following distance from other cars significantly.

AVOID SPINNING OUT FROM A TURN When your rear tires lose traction before your front tyres and you start to spin, do as follows:

26

If you have a front wheel drive: Turn into the direction in which you are skidding. Remove steering correction as the rear axle begins to regain traction and straighten back up.

If you have a rear wheel drive: Ease up on the gas pedal and turn away from the skid. Remove steering correction as the rear axle begins to regain traction.

If you have an all-wheel drive: Turn in the same direction that you are skidding and maintain light acceleration. Remove steering correction once the rear axle starts to regain traction.

TURN ON YOUR LIGHTS Turn your headlights on, even in light rain, or in gloomy, foggy or overcast conditions. Not only do they help you see the road, but they'll help other drivers see you. If your car has daytime running lights you still should put them on so vehicles behind you can see you better.

CHECK AIR PRESSURE Remember to check air pressure monthly. Tyre pressure below 30 per cent of what is recommended greatly increases the risk of hydroplaning. Check tyre depths monthly and have them rotated regularly so that they wear evenly. If you purchase only two new tyres, make sure they are placed at the rear of the vehicle.

AVOID HYDROPLANING If the tyres slip and do not respond to steering, braking or accelerating, DO NOT hit the brake suddenly, ease off the gas pedal until you slow down and regain traction. Reduce your speed when approaching large puddles or standing water.
