JUNE

I

t’s summer elsewhere, yet chilly and wet in Kenya. While you stroll into our cafés for some hot chocolate and shop around for scarves and jackets, don’t forget to take dad along with you. June is the month we celebrate fathers – those guys with a beard, broad shoulders and perhaps, a balding head. Village Market is set to help you celebrate dad with a Father’s Day weekend full of activity. We are also not short of outlets to get dad that special gift, take him out to dinner or book his next holiday. You could even challenge him to game of chess. Just let him win this time. June is also the month we take stock of our footprint on the environment. How much harm have you caused over the years? How can you make up for it? Well, you can be part of Village Market’s conservation efforts. In this issue, read all about our green projects and get involved. Your positive effort, no matter how little, could go a long way in making a huge difference. This is the issue to read cosied up in front of a fire or underneath a throw. We have designed it especially to give you a warm, fuzzy feeling inside. And why not?

MOODY AWORI BOOK SIGNING 13th May

EASTER AT VILLAGE MARKET 15th April

It was a fun-filled April weekend as families came out to spend Easter at Village Market. Kids got to enjoy various activities such as Easter egg hunts, egg painting, ‘kids and canvas’, puppet shows, creative corner and spectacular magic shows. Parents got to sit back and relax as ‘Ark The Music Band’ kept the food court crowd entertained.

6

Seasoned politician Moody Awori held a book signing event in May at Between the Lines bookstore at Village Market. Shoppers had the pleasure of getting an autographed copy of Mr. Awori’s book ‘Riding on a Tiger.’ In this tell-all work, Moody Awori, or Uncle Moody as many have come to fondly call him, says it all. From how he came to live in the whites-only neighbourhoods before his time, through the plunge into the tumultuous world of politics, to what led to the much-famed prison reforms. It is a story of a nation as seen through the eyes of one who has seen it all.

Village SCENE MAMA’S DAY 14th May

Village Market pampered all mothers who walked in with special promotions and offers on Sunday 14th May. There was something for every mama: Zumba at the rooftop; the fashion bazaar at the foodcourt; and an express nail-bar to get those hard working fingers looking glam. Yves Rocher and Lintons also offered makeovers and there was a health clinic for quick vital checks. Pink was the colour of the day as every lady received a pink rose at the entrance into the mall, leaving many mums gushing with joy. We love you mamas!

AFRICA DAY 25th May

Africa Day is the annual celebration designated by the African Union to commemorate the continent’s unity. An array of events and activities take place around the globe to mark this day. On this day, Village Market staff and tenants dressed up in colourful, eye-catching African designs. The day culminated in an evening of song and dance. The renowned DJ Wyt kept the crowd entertained while acrobats, dancers and drummers kept in tune with the African beat.

Village OUR RECOMMITMENT TO THE ENVIRONMENT

W

orld Environment Day is commemorated worldwide on 5th June every year, and is a day set aside to recommit ourselves to caring for our environment and the community around us. This year’s theme ‘Connect with Nature’ reminds us of the need to care for our fragile environment. While this may seem like a daunting task, we continue to draw inspiration from the words of the late Professor Wangari Mathaai: “It’s the little things citizens do. That’s what will make the difference.” Village Market’s environmental and social responsibility initiatives are centred on the arts, education, environment and health. For 22 years now, the shopping complex has spearheaded and sponsored various CSR activities in collaboration with the Gigiri community. Recently, Gigiri residents and Nairobi City Council personnel joined Village Market management staff and tenants in cleanup exercises along Limuru Road, UN Crescent and adjacent feeder roads.

SEEDLINGS: Celebrating World Environment Day

SEEDLING GOODY BAG Over the years, Village Market has supported the activities of the Friends of Karura Forest by making donations both in cash and kind. In 2013, Village Market management donated 3,000 tree seedlings to the forest’s conservation efforts. On World Environment Day the same year, the Friends of Karura Forest, Kenya Forest Service’s conservation community-based programme (which engages youth mobilised from the nearby Mathare Slum, school children from Karura Primary School and Cheleta Primary School), volunteers from Global Shapers organisation and Village Market staff gathered at Karura Forest to plant these seedlings. Shoppers too were not to be left out as they each received a goody bag with a seedling inside it, to go plant at home or in their respective social communities.

ACTIVE COLLABORATION Currently on its fourth year of partnership, Village Market, in collaboration with Swiss based I:CO (I Collect), the Dutch KICI Foundation and Dove International, are spearheading a unique eco-conscious campaign dubbed Africa Collects Textiles ACT! The project collects textiles and footwear with the aim of creating a closed product loop on a global scale. Kenya was the first country in the region to roll out the blue print, with Village Market being the first shopping mall in the Sub-Saharan region to embrace the initiative. While most people will donate clothes and shoes to charities, it has been almost impossible to upcycle, recycle or repurpose

Should you wish to make a difference through any of our charity or conservation initiatives, email pr@villagemarket-kenya.com or call 020 712 2488/90.

8

Village CARES unused clothing. The ACT! pilot project primarily focuses on upcycling and sustainable recycling possibilities that will realise textile reprocessing in the country. This will then contribute to environmental conservation as well as generate employment opportunities through the establishment of a local textile recycling economy. All profits from this project are donated to charity. The project has seen tonnes of textiles and shoe items donated by enthusiastic shoppers. The collection bin at Village Market is located near the flower shop at the Nakumatt entrance. Should you have clothing items that you need to get rid of, you can do so in a sustainable manner that reduces dependency on landfills.

A GREENER VILLAGE Village Market is designed to make as much use of natural light as possible, especially in public spaces such as the food court. This lowers the dependence on lighting and air conditioning. For many years now, we have been known for our green plants that can be found in nearly every corner of the shopping complex. These plants are carefully tended to by an entire department of highly trained personnel.

FATHER'S

day

FAMOUS WORDS BY

famous people

ABOUT FATHERS & FATHERHOOD From silly to serious stuff, just like us, famous people have had a thing or two to say about fatherhood. We explore Father’s Day through their eyes for some wisdom, fun, controversy and cheer. I gave my father $100 and said: “Buy yourself something that will make your life easier.” So he went out and bought a present for my mother. Rita Runder - Comedian, writer and actress When you’re young, you think your dad is Superman. Then you grow up and you realise he’s just a regular guy who wears a cape. Dave Attell - Stand-up comedian, writer and actor When I was a boy of 14, my father was so ignorant I could hardly stand to have the old man around. But when I got to be 21, I was astonished at how much he had learned in seven years. Mark Twain - Writer, humorist, entrepreneur, publisher and lecturer A good father will leave his imprint on his daughter for the rest of her life. Dr. James Dobson - Evangelical Christian author, psychologist and founder in 1977 of ‘Focus on the Family’ I could never have a better teacher in those days than my father. Tony Visconti - American record producer, musician and singer

10

There are three stages of a man’s life: He believes in Santa Claus; he doesn’t believe in Santa Claus; he is Santa Claus. Unknown Fatherhood begins in the womb. Pro-life campaign slogan A girl without a mother is like a mountain with no paths; a girl without a father is like a mountain with no streams. Kurdish Proverb The curse of fatherhood is distance, and the good fathers spend their lives trying to overcome it. Steve Farrar - Founder and chairman of Men’s Leadership Ministries and author of the best-selling book ‘Point Man: How a Man Can Lead His Family’ A father is a banker provided by nature. French Proverb One father is more than a hundred schoolmasters. George Herbert - Welsh-born poet, orator and Anglican priest My daughter got me a ‘World’s Best Dad’ mug. So we know she’s sarcastic. Bob Odenkirk - Actor, comedian, writer, director and producer

The heart of a father is the masterpiece of nature. Antoine François Prévost French author and novelist “An almost perfect relationship with his father was the earthly root of all his wisdom. From his own father, he said, he first learned that Fatherhood must be at the core of the universe.” [speaking of George MacDonald in ‘Phantastes’] C.S. Lewis - novelist, poet, academic, medievalist, literary critic, essayist, lay theologian, broadcaster, lecturer and Christian apologist Finally coming to terms with Father’s Day. I blow as a Dad. I get it. No, I’m not an evil, abusive father, it’s just that while all my intentions and thoughts have been out of love for my kids, my actions and behaviour never measured up. Geoffrey Hill - English poet, professor emeritus of English literature and religion, and former co-director of the Editorial Institute at Boston University

Fathers are the humble everyday real servicemen. Richelle E. Goodrich - Author There’s a wound most troubled boys share, which, at its core, comes from the feeling that they don’t have their father’s unconditional love…When a boy feels as if no one cares about him, or as if he will never amount to anything, he truly believes it doesn’t matter what he does. Clayton Lessor MA, LPC - Therapist and creator/facilitator of the Quest Project Adolescent Outpatient Programme “BONN: I thought fatherhood was hard, and some people weren’t suited for it. But it’s not. Being a father, a good one, I mean, is about making a choice.” [in ‘Whiskey Blues’] Bijou Hunter - Author

Many Christians have no understanding of God’s fatherhood. Sunday Adelaja - Founder and senior pastor of the Embassy of God, an evangelical-charismatic megachurch in Kiev, Ukraine “A father is as much a verb as a mother.” [in ‘Dear Ijeawele’] Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie - Nigerian writer of novels, short stories and nonfiction The father who has selflessly poured himself into the life of his children may leave no other monument than that of his children. But as for a life well lived, no other monument is necessary. Craig D. Lounsbrough - Licensed professional counsellor and certified professional life coach

Be a dad. Don’t be “Mom’s Assistant”... Be a man... Fathers have skills that they never use at home. You run a landscaping business and you can’t dress and feed a four-year-old? Take it on. Spend time with your kids.... It won’t take away your manhood, it will give it to you. Louis C.K - Comedian, actor, writer, producer, director and editor “I abandoned her. It’s the one capital crime of fatherhood. Mothers can fail a thousand different ways. A father’s only job is: do not abandon this child.” [in ‘Radiance’] Catherynne M. Valente - Fiction writer, poet and literary critic

PATRICK

mavros

THE plight OF THE PANGOLIN ROYAL ANIMAL Patrick Mavros is home to the most exquisite handcrafted jewellery inspired by African nature. The jewellery brand recently launched a new collection shaped after the Pangolin – a nocturnal mammal commonly found in Africa and Asia. This rarely seen, armoured creature has been revered by societies across the continent, but now gets the unfortunate title of the most trafficked species on earth. “Traditionally, in Zimbabwean communities, if you came across a pangolin you would take it and hand it over to your chief. It was a royal animal,” says Patrick Mavros Jr, designer and creator of the pieces in this collection. “In the 1980s, there was an incident where someone was photographed presenting a pangolin to President Robert Mugabe. That then led to a deluge of people bringing in pangolins that needed a place to be cared for.” With time, this concern for the pangolin turned into a poaching problem. Whereas the creature had been previously hunted for bush meat on occasion, it became the victim of widespread poaching and trafficking making it one of the most endangered species on the planet. It is for this reason that African luxury brand Patrick Mavros, in partnership with the Zimbabwean conservation organisation Tikki Hywood Trust, are working to bring the plight of the little-known creature, on the verge of extinction, to the limelight.

12

STRONG STATEMENT IN SILVER AND GOLD The Pangolin Collection features earrings, bangles, rings and necklaces. Pieces are modelled after the appearance of pangolin’s scales, with beautiful detail that mirrors a curled up pangolin. According to Patrick Jr: “For the first time, pieces in a collection will be available in both sterling silver and 18 carat gold. It’s not just jewellery; it’s a strong message about an important conservation effort to open minds across Africa and bring much needed assistance to save the Pangolin.”

AWARENESS AND CONSERVATION The Tikki Hywood Trust was founded in 1994 by Lisa Hywood as a wildlife conservation organisation. The organisation has

"…guests were genuinely surprised to learn that there are pangolins in Kenya” been a leader in the fight to protect the species from imminent extinction. “The threat to the pangolin has been brought on by commercial poaching for its scales, which are valued in China and other parts of Asia as folk medicine, believed to cure a myriad of ailments,” Lisa says. “For instance, pregnant women are believed to lactate more easily if they take medicine made from pangolin scales. You can imagine the devastation caused by the

MADE IN THE MAVROS TRADITION Like the rest of the pieces to be found in the Patrick Mavros store, the Pangolin Collection was made on the Mavros family farm in Zimbabwe. Following in the footsteps of his father, Patrick Jr says his foray into the world of jewellery and silver-smithing was simply a matter of observation and eventual participation. “As a kid, I would walk into the workshop and watch my father and elder brother go about their creations. Eventually, I got interested and started making my own pieces as well. I would make necklaces from pieces of rock that I picked from the farm and gift them to my mother who wore them with pride, although they were quite ugly,” he says with a laugh. Part of the proceeds from the sales of the Pangolin Collection will go towards supporting the work of the Tikki Hywood Trust.

JEWELLERY: Inspired by the pangolin

demand for such a cure in a country of a billion people.” The Tikki Hywood Trust takes care of pangolins that are found and brought in by well-wishers all over Zimbabwe, including chiefs who receive them from citizens in the traditional custom. This is important work that helps keep them away from poachers and gives the pangolin population an opportunity to build its numbers once more. Public awareness is also an important part of the Trust’s work. With populations of pangolin spread over Eastern and Southern Africa, there is widespread ignorance about the creature, with many people even unaware of its existence. “During the launch of

the collection in Nairobi, most of the guests were genuinely surprised to learn that there are pangolins in Kenya,” notes Patrick Jr. As part of its mission to bring attention to the often overlooked species, the Tikki Hywood Trust partnered with world renowned photographer Adrian Stern to create a short film, ‘The Pangolin Men’. The deeply moving film captures the lives of the pangolin handlers who care for the animals confiscated from smugglers and handed over to the Tikki Hywood Trust. “The animals are often traumatised by the experience of being smuggled, so they need to be cared for and hand nurtured back to full health,” Lisa says.

kalabash

KALABASH,

the african GIFT SHOP

K KALABASH: Unique gifts inspired by Africa

alabash is an iconic crafts shop with a charm that is impossible to miss at Village Market. The shop caters to anyone with a soft spot for African handmade gift items. Mrs Ehsani lovingly selects each and every piece that calls the shop home as it awaits its final destination in or out of Kenya. In between hearty laughs, Mrs Ehsani spoke to Village Beat about her passion for the arts and crafts, and a little bit about her other interests.

Tell us a bit about your interest in the arts and crafts: I have always loved art because it provides you with a deeper understanding about creation. Art brings you closer to God, I appreciate it and that makes it very special to me.

How did the idea for Kalabash come about? My passion for the arts is what gave birth to Kalabash. I enjoy working with artisans, I find them creative and very clever. Kalabash is a space for them to showcase their talent.

What advice would you share with shoppers looking to find some unique crafts? Art is a very personal experience. It is not just about the beauty of the piece but its functionality as well. For instance, soapstone carvings can be used to serve food, a statue might also serve as a seat or a lamp-stand.

Village Market is going through some tremendous changes. What should customers expect at Kalabash?

They should expect something different and unique every time they come to the shop. My staff is ready to serve and I

14

am very proud of them. I also encourage our supplying artists and craftspeople to aspire for higher standards and quality to surpass out clients’ expectations.

This issue of Village Beat is dedicated to fathers. What gift items would you recommend for dads? In the African culture the rungu, or spear, is considered a symbol of leadership. We have the ebony Maasai rungu with a fine touch of wildlife carvings. These are among our client favourites. We also have other functional items such as business

card holders and letter openers ranging from olive to ebony wood.

Finally, what special message do you have for fathers and other father figures? I would urge them to spend more time with their family.

Five things about Mrs Ehsani What is your favourite past time activity? I enjoy walking, nature, good company and seeing the arts. Who is your favourite author? I recently discovered Haruki Murakami. Flowers or chocolate? Flowers of course! (laughs) Greatest movie of all time? I like movies that make me laugh. I enjoyed Nine Months. Beach or safari? Both!

PARAS GUDKA– BRINGING CHESS

into the spotlight

P

aras Gudka is a 33 year old entrepreneur who gave up a 10 year career in graphic and web design to focus all his energies on managing chess as a sport in Kenya. For close to six years before then, chess administration was simply a hobby. After much thought however, he finally took a leap of faith and turned it into a full-time career. Come January 2016, Motochess Ventures and Anchor Chess Club were born. Starting as a competitive player in primary school in the mid-90’s, his involvement in chess has included the following disciplines: administration (of two clubs he founded); organisation (of tournaments); arbitration (locally and internationally); writing (he initiated the now-defunct chess column in The Star newspaper); photography and instruction (currently grooming a future Under 8 national champion).

Paras started as a competitive player in primary school in the mid-90’s academy run by the country’s best trainers. This will complement the club’s offering for seasoned chess players under the Anchor Chess Club.

MOTOCHESS VENTURES Motochess Ventures was founded in January 2016 to provide comprehensive chess services. These mainly include training, material and competitive acumen at the highest standards possible, in a sound environment. Paras also aims to get rid of corruption, incompetence, disorganisation and indiscipline, which have crippled the sport for a long time. Apart from providing chess equipment such as boards, clocks and scorebooks to the chess-playing public at competitive rates, Motochess Ventures’ major focus has been on well-run chess events. Village

18

Market Game Night is just one of such initiatives that has exposed a large section of the general public to novel chess concepts. Perhaps the most interesting is the ’10 to 1’ competition in which a very strong player takes on 10 or more players at the same time. The idea is to defeat most of them within a short time frame – something that would be considered not just difficult, but unfathomable. Motochess tournaments have consistently attracted large numbers and have become benchmarks against which other events are now measured. Through its training division, MV has brought the joys and educational benefits of chess to several beginners and will soon offer them on a larger scale with a fully-fledged chess

CHAMPION: Entrepreneur Paras Gudka

ANCHOR CHESS CLUB On Valentine’s Day 2016, Paras Gudka brought together a group of like-minded chess enthusiasts to discuss the possibility of participating in the Kenya National Chess League as a new club team, known from then as the ANCC. Within two weeks, a meeting venue for the club had been negotiated – the YWCA Hostels in Nairobi, where club members met once a week to train for

the league and the first edition of the Closed Chess Championship. Unfortunately, the 2016 edition of the national league failed to take off due to wrangles within the national chess federation, rendering the club’s efforts meaningless. After a brief closure for six months, from July to December, the club was revived in January 2017 when three Anchor Chess Club teams participated in the Strathmore University Teams Rapid Chess Challenge. The strongest of the three – the ANCC Alligators – was sponsored by 195 Travels and Kingsway Tyres and finished fourth overall, behind perennial league toppers such as Kenya Commercial Bank and Equity Bank. Since then, the club has resumed activity at YWCA on Saturday afternoons with the second edition of the ANCC Closed Championship. They also aim to take part in the 2017 edition of the National Chess League, in which the ANCC is currently ranked 9th overall. To join the club, one needs to pay the membership fee and fill out a membership application form, details of which can be found on the club’s website at www. anchorchess.club/membership.

OHCHA! OhCha is a Thai expression that can be translated to mean ‘delicious in a big way’. It is also the name of the most authentic Southeast Asian street food experience that one can find in Nairobi. Mark Muita, sales manager for the Artcaffē group, had a chat with us about OhCha and what’s in store for you there.

What kind of cuisine is the focus at OhCha? OhCha aims to bring the vibrant street food culture of Southeast Asia to Nairobi. The term ‘street food’ often carries a negative connotation in Kenya, but what it means in our context is food that is freshly and quickly prepared, as well as being healthy and tasty, just like they do it in cities across that region. When you’re on the move and need a quick meal, you can grab something fresh and tasty in no time.

OHCHA: Southeast Asian street food

option. This way, customers can choose their favourite kind of noodles with vegetable or meat options – spicy, mild or plain. You can mix it up any way you like, so there are endless possibilities on offer. Our dishes are made in authentic Southeast Asian style – over high heat for a short time – which ensures quick preparation time but retention of flavours and nutrients. All our ingredients are fresh to ensure the best quality.

What are the main features of the OhCha street food experience?

My favourite starter consists of vegetable spring rolls. When it comes to main dishes, I like the chicken cashew nut noodles. It’s a very filling, tasty and nutritious meal. The Vietnamese baguettes are also a fantastic choice. These are freshly baked and spread with spicy mayonnaise and stuffed with marinated beef or chicken. I would describe this as an Asian version of a very sumptuous sandwich. To wash it all down, try the lemongrass lemonade, a refreshing drink that you can only find at OhCha.

Any final words about OhCha?

Southeast Asian street food is mostly noodle-based. We offer a wide range of noodles as well as a build-it-yourself

So authenticity is a big part of the experience? Yes, at OhCha we give our food a signature flavour that sets it apart as authentic Southeast Asian style street food. Our chef, Thiwa, is from Thailand and has vast experience and training in this kind of cuisine. Authentic fresh ingredients and proper preparation methods make it a fully authentic experience. Kenyans are a little hesitant to try it out but I would recommend it to anyone who hasn’t. It’s totally worth it.

20

What are some of the dishes you would recommend?

Yes, I’d like to mention that there are daily specials available and these can be found listed on our website: www.ohcha.co.ke and Facebook page: OhCha Noodle Bar. We also have a delivery service in Westlands and Village Market area, so you can always enjoy your favourite OhCha dishes from the comfort of your home.

ALL ABOUT

Zucchini is a strong supporter of local farmers. We source our produce from numerous small-scale suppliers as well as large commercial farms. We offer personalised service to our customers, making sure everyone is able to find exactly what they need.

How fresh should shoppers expect their veggies to be? Shopping at Zucchini is as good as being at the farmer’s market. Our produce is sourced on the very day of sale and we stock our shelves with fresh fruit and veggies every morning, seven days a week. We are also our own importers of produce

Besides fresh produce, what else does Zucchini offer its customers?

Finally, what are your favourite items from the Zucchini menu? The chia seed green smoothie is definitely the most popular among our customers at the juice bar and it’s also my favourite. As for the gelato, I personally love the pistachio flavour above all.

THREE DAYS

of father’s day As a father, the essence of Father’s Day is to spend time enjoying the things that make you happy. That said, a little adventure in the wild would make a great plan for some father-son bonding in the vast Masai plains. DAY 1

DAY 2

The first step to this adventure is your arrival at the rustic Maji Moto Eco Camp, just a three-hour drive from Nairobi. The camp’s name means ‘hot water’ and refers to the natural hot spring near the village. Nestled on a hilltop deep in the Masai lands and overlooking vast savannah plains, Maji Moto is a small, environmentally-sensitive camp. A stay here will immerse you not only in the intense natural beauty of the Loita Hills, but also in the ancient culture and knowledge of the Maasai. The camp has six secluded, standard-size, igloo-type tents. Your chief host Sankale Ole Ntutu, a Maasai tribesman from the Purko clan, has immense passion, knowledge and experience of the natural world. You are sure to learn a lot from him. Each tent is equipped with mattresses, pillows and beddings, and a private relaxing area in the front. The bathroom has a toilet, hot shower, hand basin and a natural hot spring bath under the stars. The food is simple, fresh and delicious. Explore the local area on a Maasai-guided nature walk and enjoy the majestic views of rocky, undulating plains. Learn about the area’s flora and fauna, how the Maasai make fire and how they can transport it for an entire day. Wind down the day with dinner, camp fire stories and a dip in the hot springs at night!

After breakfast, engage in a Maasai warrior training session. This introductory class includes learning skills in sasol, including stick fighting, spear throwing and archery. Experience pure adventure on a mountain bike journey as you ride through wide open savannah. Though the wildlife population here is sporadic, you will definitely be pleased to see gazelle, zebra and wildebeest along the way. As you zoom past the Maasai settlements, you will be amazed about their lives and their relationship with wildlife and nature. In the afternoon, depart deep into Loita Hills. The trail will lead you through bushes and acacia forests where you will cross rivers and track wild game. The amazing scenery here is full of wildlife such as antelopes, giraffes, elephants, buffaloes and even big cats. The Magadi view point will take your breath away. On a clear day, you can enjoy views across Lake Magadi, Lake Natron and all the way to Mt Kilimanjaro and Mt Meru. Enjoy lunch as you sit on top of the world. Your bush camp will be set up under yellow-bark acacia trees, next to a natural spring. The position of the camp is perfect, with complete privacy and a good chance to watch wild game stroll by. The camp has a simple and rustic setup and is equipped with everything that you might need in the

BETWEEN the LINES RIDING ON A TIGER Moody Awori

“Although my father had modest education, he had a thirst for education and natural gift for learning. As a result, he placed education at the top of his priorities for his children and everyone else who passed through his hands,” – Moody Awori ‘Riding on a Tiger’ is an epic journey of discovery. It is the story of a man lured by both the thrill of adventure and the courage to lose sight of the shore to discover the mysteries of the sea of life. This work seeks to reconstruct the author’s beginning in a large God-fearing family in the early decades of the 20th century and how those beginnings became the anvil on which his character as an unrelenting businessman and philanthropist were forged. In this bare-all work, Moody Awori, or Uncle Moody as many have come to fondly call him, says it all. From how he came to live in the whites-only neighbourhoods before his time, through the plunge into the tumultuous world of politics, to what led to the much-famed prison reforms. It is a story of a nation as seen through the eyes of one who has seen it all.

Jonathan Scott

This new autobiography by wildlife celebrity Jonathan Scott celebrates the extraordinary life of one of the world’s most popular wildlife presenters and photographers. From his childhood on a Berkshire farm in the UK to his rise to international fame as a presenter on the ‘Big Cat Diary’, one of the BBC Natural History Unit’s most popular and long-running wildlife series, Jonathan Scott has lived a life that many people can only dream about. Following a degree in zoology he travels 6,000 miles overland to Africa, where he becomes first a wildlife artist and then a safari guide in the Masai Mara. Over the years, Jonathan’s observations of wildlife prompt him to reflect on his own life, revealing a side to his character that he has struggled to overcome since childhood. Aged nearly 40, he finally finds peace through meeting and marrying his wife, Angela, and together with her two children they go on to prove you can mix domestic life and an adventurous career when you share a love of family and wilderness, art and photography.

STUFF EVERY DAD SHOULD KNOW

NOW WE ARE SIXTY AND A BIT

This pocket-sized guide of man skills is the little black book every modern man needs. For everything from car maintenance to grilling instructions to wardrobe tips and more, this handy reference features everything a man should know (but probably doesn’t). Including: • How to cast a fishing rod • How to make the perfect Martini • How to negotiate a raise • Five pick-up lines in five different languages • How to bet on horses • How to give a great massage.

When Christopher Matthew was six, the poems of Milne always reassured him that other children were as naughty as he was, so on reaching sixty he decided that he should adapt ‘Now We Are Six’ for an older audience.’Now We Are Sixty’ is often hilarious, sometimes rueful and always thought-provoking. Some verses are about realising we are not as young as we thought, while some are about the more disconcerting problems of modern life: mobile telephones on trains, anti-social behaviour, traffic jams and the internet.

Kingsway TYRES

KINGSWAY TYRES at the top of MT. KILIMANJARO By Reema Doshi

KINGSWAY TYRES – PR & MARKETING MANAGER

NAIROBI – 1,795 m I began training immediately for a period of four months. Alongside my usual 8-to-5 job, I would walk five kilometres daily, eat well and keep hydrated. During the weekends, I would scale the heights of the many hills and mountains that can be found outside Nairobi. Finally, on 26th February 2017, together with 15 other eager hikers, I set off for Tanzania. I was both nervous and anxious the entire drive there, but I wasn’t the only one. As we edged closer, we all raised our heads to trace the silhouette of the magnificent Kilimanjaro, enchanting and intimidating even from a distance.

MARANGU GATE – 1,879 m

Resilience, endurance and a challenge that I couldn’t say no to would see me take the Kingsway Tyres flag to the highest peak of Mt. Kilimanjaro. My first attempt at climbing the mountain was in 2014 when I made it up 5,000 metres only to succumb to altitude sickness along the way. This time round, I wasn’t going to let anything stop me from making it to the very top.

S

ometime last year, I had a conversation with Kingsway Tyres’ managing director Manoj Shah. We talked about the plight of the less fortunate children in Kenya. The fact that these children lack basic needs, health care and education has always been as issue that is very close to my heart. The conversation then drifted to my hiking expeditions and my unsuccessful attempt some years back to get to the

28

top of Mt. Kilimanjaro. With that in mind, Mr Shah gave me a stirring challenge and opportunity: “Go back to Kilimanjaro and make it all the way to the top. I am confident of your success and on behalf of Kingsway Foundation, I pledge KES 2.5 million to assist the needy children in Kenya.” The fate of many children supported by various charities became my second motivation and signature cause to ascend the highest mountain in Africa. There was only one thing to do. Climb Mt. Kilimanjaro!

READY TO GO: Reema Doshi prepares for Kili

After registering our presence at the border, we arrived at Marangu gate at noon. I immediately offloaded my backpacks and day bag and started making final preparations for the climb. A group of porters, cooks and guides were on standby with hot meals. By this time, I had stopped worrying about the climb and had calmed the butterflies that had been fluttering in my stomach. My mind was focused on one thing alone; the six-day excursion that would lead me to the top of Africa’s tallest mountain. An effort that would ultimately go towards assisting the less fortunate.

MANDARA HUT – 2,720 m After a short registration process and a hearty prayer, I took my first steps towards

I was wet and cold by the time we got to Horombo. That night, I went to sleep with the mantra of the mountain, ringing in my ears “pole pole”.

camp number one – Mandara Hut. Along the way was a dense, beautiful rainforest. As luck would have it, it began to rain. My protective rain gear proved useful as it kept my bag as dry as possible. But on reaching Mandara Hut, my clothes and shoes were soaking wet. At the camp, I changed into some warm clothes, had a bowl of hot soup and a good meal, before retiring for the night. I was exhausted and cold.

HOROMBO HUT – 3,730 m Day two of the hike began with breakfast and stretching exercises. We set off with some packed lunch that the cooks had prepared for us. The sun did its best to keep us warm but it wasn’t long before it started raining again. Our guides were immensely helpful, often reminding us to pace ourselves and drink lots of water.

We arose to the sight of the snow peaked mountain, peering in the distance. Water bottles filled, camel bags on the back, we forged on. Day three was set aside for acclimatisation. The idea is to climb up to a high altitude then descend back down. By doing so, your body begins to adapt to the sudden change in elevation, further increasing one’s chances of getting to the highest peak. It isn’t as easy as it sounds, which is why I had failed to reach the very top in my first attempt. But I was much more prepared this time round. However, some of the hikers in my group suffered headaches and nausea. In spite of this, we trudged on, following the drill – walk slow, drink lots of water, layer up on warm clothes. We soon chanced upon a group of hikers on their way back from the peak – some triumphant, some dismayed.

KIBO HUT – 4,720 m

HIKING: What a view!

On day four, we made it past Alpine Desert on our way to Kibo Hut. The rain was relentless, pouring down in hailstones. My breathing was visibly laboured and we all walked at an even slower pace. We struggled with fatigue and while some puked, others complained of headaches. Resiliently, we inched slowly upwards. The last of the group arrived at 4pm in the afternoon. We had some tea and snacks

and readied our gear for the next leg of the journey. That night, we were to start the main ascent to the peak and were only allowed two hours of sleep. After dinner at 8pm, we had a short nap. By 11.30pm we were back on our feet, marching onwards to the apex.

GILMAN’S POINT – 5,685 m Any hiker will tell you that it is difficult to sleep in high altitudes. What’s even harder is to keep hiking on only two hours of sleep. There in the cold, wet and dark night, layered in warm clothing, we put on our headlamps and walked in single file following our guides. We trekked all night and arrived at Gilman’s Point at 6.30am just as the sun was rising above the clouds behind us. Cold, tired and hungry, we gathered whatever energy we had left and trudged on towards Uhuru Peak. We slogged about like zombies, our movement hampered by the thin air. At every turn, we longed to hear that we were finally there. Our guides spurred us on, making every effort to ensure we didn’t give up.

UHURU PEAK – 5,895 m And finally, we made it! Tears filled my eyes as the guides announced our arrival at the summit. I was overwhelmed with joy standing at the highest point in Africa. This indeed was a very special moment in my life - one I will cherish for many years to come. With lots of pride and joy, I raised the Kingsway Tyres flag on top of Mt. Kilimanjaro as a symbol of my success and the company’s commitment towards assisting the less fortunate children in Kenya.

My sincere appreciation goes to the Kingsway Tyres family for the support and motivation that encouraged me to accomplish this great feat. I also wish to acknowledge and appreciate the Kingsway Foundation, for their generous contribution of KES 2.5 million to support the activities of Amrita Children’s Home in Athi River, the Ananda Marga Children’s Home, and the vision screening programme for children among other programmes.
