WE ARE GOING

I

t’s been five years since Village Market embarked on a massive expansion project to increase its brand offering. Now in its finishing touches, the shopping complex is set to unveil another 40 new outlets, various recreation facilities, and a brand new hotel. Hamed Ehsani, Village Market’s managing director, took time off his busy schedule to fill us in on this exciting news. This edition of Village Beat features a brand new restaurant with a culinary experience straight from the streets of Seoul. Not to be left out is Orchid, with a delectable menu inspired by a century of Persian cooking. Kashmir Arts goes ahead to liven up our homes with carpets and furniture from India, Pakistan, Kashmir, and Afghanistan. East Africa continues to grapple with the challenge polythene bags pose on the environment. The Kenyan government has made a bold step to rid the country of this menace by September 2017. This move is bound to have an impact on shopping centres and shopping trends across the country. However, Village Market has made a commitment to be plastic-bag free one month early, through a unique campaign that will see all its shoppers get durable, reusable and pretty shopping bags for free. Read about this interesting conservation campaign right here and get a bag of your own too. And if indeed good karma is in the air, nature will thank you well for taking part in this. Just wait and see!

FATHER’S DAY AT VM 18th June

Village SCENE NUMI CRICKET CHALLENGE 12th-15th July

The Numi Cricket Challenge bowled off in Nairobi on July 12th. Held at the Nairobi Gymkhana, Simba Union and Ruaraka Grounds, the tournament attracted over 400 players from more than 30 teams. Village Market was among the corporate sponsors who came together to promote cricket especially among underprivileged youth. The tournaments were organised by Starfield Sports Ltd and the Obuya Brothers. Together they share a vision of developing cricket in Kenya, and using cricket to help develop the society.

DIABETES WALK 8th July

TROPHIES: Numi Cricket Challenge

Village Market staff, shoppers, tenants and their families took part in a diabetes charity walk in July. The event, organised by the Kenya Diabetes Management & Information Centre, saw various corporate organisations and schools walk for 11 km not only to burn some calories but also save lives. Funds raised during this event went towards the purchase of insulin for needy children who require the drug to survive. Let us all join hands to fight diabetes by supporting those affected and by adopting a healthy lifestyle. Village SCENE VM GAME NIGHT 15th July

FUN & GAMES: VM's latest monthly event

Village Market’s latest monthly event, Game Night, keeps growing in popularity and attendance. On 15th July, friends and family went head-to-head in various board games. Games played included Checkers, Chess, Scrabble, Monopoly, Backgammon, Jenga and Connect Four. 34 contestants also took part in a blitz chess tournament led by Paras Gudka of Motochess Ventures. The nine-round FIDE-rated event was played at a time control of five minutes per player per game. Prizes were presented after the event. Mehul Gohil, Kenya's fourth ranked active player by FIDE rating was awarded 1st place, Joseph Methu had the next best result, followed by Vasanth Ramesh. Seriousness aside, Game Night is a great place to socialise over a great meal and a board game. And of course, there’s the tragic comedy of watching an entire Jenga tower crumble to the ground!

URBAN NIGHT 30th June

Music lovers flocked the food court at Village Market for the June edition of Urban Nite. Ricky na Marafiki put on an ecstatic performance of Afro Jazz that kept the crowd on its feet. Everyone in attendance, young and old, sang along to the band's popular hits. Certainly a night to remember!

VILLAGE MARKET SET TO UNVEIL NEW OUTLETS, A HOTEL & A REVOLUTIONARY, ONE-OF-A-KIND FAMILY ENTERTAINMENT AND RECREATION CENTRE (FERC) IN AFRICA

From a coffee plantation in 1992, Village Market has steadily grown to provide a one-stop shopping and recreation experience for Nairobi. With the long awaited expansion of the mall nearing completion, Managing Director Hamed Ehsani spoke to Village Beat about Village Market’s unique market position and his expectations of the future.

9

WORTH

the wait!

How has Village Market been able to maintain its status as one of Africa’s best-known shopping and recreation destinations?

do fall short in the selection of concepts, location, and estimation of the size and requirements of the market. This naturally dilutes the market and in times of uncertainty, people will rely on the names and brands that they trust. These challenges also come with great opportunities. A smart management team will identify and make use of these opportunities to strengthen their position in the market, and I believe that this is one of our strengths.

To maintain a brand, one has to maintain the standards that the shoppers and visitors have grown to expect. One also needs to constantly improve the shopping centre’s offering and keep up with the times. These have been the key elements that have formed Village Market’s evolution. Just like in any bustling city, our shoppers appreciate change and new ideas or else they get bored of having the same experience over and over. Balancing the process of change is important in mall management and it is our hope that our new expansion is an indication of how we view the market and what its needs are.

What is the future of Village Market as a shopping attraction in the years to come?

How is the expansion expected to change the shopping experience at Village Market?

Online shopping is gaining popularity throughout the world and so shopping alone cannot be the motive for attracting customers into the shopping centres. Entertainment, ambiance, enhanced customer service, security and convenience have become more important than ever before. Having the right mix of shops and providing increased value is crucial to any shopping facility. The expansion at Village Market is a combination of all these factors and much more. Our customers will now experience a new language of architecture and they will visit new concepts that did not previously exist in Nairobi. They will be able to enjoy new food and entertainment areas, shop at new boutique stores while enjoying some of famous Kenyan brands that they trust. Along with new recreational facilities, Village Market will change Nairobi’s shopping landscape completely.

10

Our customers will now experience a new language of architecture and they will visit new concepts that did not previously exist in Nairobi What are your thoughts on the increasing number of shopping malls within and outside the city? It is a healthy sign when an industry grows, but it is also important that such growth is planned for and put into action based on reliable data and good market information. Some of the new developments

MR EHSANI: MD of Village Market

Our new expansion will be the latest offering in the market and will provide interesting choices for our shoppers. I envision a great response to the world class recreation and entertainment that we have lined up. Health and fitness will attract large numbers to our new concepts, and choices of food at Village Market will be amazingly wide. We will become the food capital of Nairobi. Shoppers will be assured of choice in every aspect, as well as value for their money. In the meantime, we continue to look at areas we can improve on. For instance; we are improving our customer relations to even higher standards, as well as adding to our already popular exhibition and event venue with a new hotel, catering and events centre.

SOME FACTS ABOUT PLASTIC BAGS THAT YOU PROBABLY DIDN’T KNOW:

VILLAGE MARKET’S INITIATIVE TO ERADICATE PLASTIC BAGS

HARMFUL: This plastic isn't fantastic

T

he negative impact of plastic bags on the environment cannot be overstated. A single plastic bag will take 700 years to start decomposing and a further 1,000 years to fully break down. This means that all the plastic that has ever been produced has not degraded yet. A large percentage of plastic bags are dumped in the trash or along the roadside. These eventually end up in our water bodies. According to the United Nations Environmental Programme (UNEP), plastic bags contribute to the 8 million tonnes of plastic that leak into the ocean every year. At current rates, by 2050 there will be more plastic in the oceans than fish, wreaking havoc on the marine ecosystems, wildlife and tourism. Following the Kenyan government’s nationwide ban on single-use plastic bags, Village Market has made a commitment to be plastic bag free, one month early. In support of the government’s initiative, Village Market has launched a pro-environment campaign named ‘Jeans In Bags Out.’ The ‘Jeans In Bags Out’ campaign encourages shoppers to bring in their old jeans and have them

12

repurposed into durable shopping bags for free. Village Market is working with a group of tailors from Kibera who will transform the jeans, on-site, into fashionable multi-use bags. This month-long campaign will offer shoppers a long-term alternative to plastic bags. Speaking about the campaign, Village Market’s Managing Director Hamed Ehsani noted: “Village Market is committed to the environment and the community. We are proud to be the first mall in Kenya to embrace the new policy and set an example for other companies to adopt this important change.”

JEANS IN BAGS OUT The ‘Jeans In Bags Out’ activation will take place at the food court from July 27th to August 28th 2017. Shoppers can drop off their old jeans and pick up their bags anytime from 11.00 am to 5.00 pm.

BAGS OF STYLE: Some of the new bags on display

• 160,000 plastic bags are used globally every second! • 5 trillion plastic bags are produced yearly. Side by side, they can encircle the world 7 times • The Great Pacific Garbage Patch, which is a floating landfill of garbage in the Pacific twice the size of Texas, is mostly composed of plastic • In 2008, a sperm whale was found beached in California. It died due to the more than 22 kilos of plastic found in its stomach • Plastic bags remain toxic even after they break down. A plastic bag doesn’t biodegrade, it photodegrades. This means that it will breakdown into smaller and smaller toxic bits of itself, then bleed and contaminate the environment • Plastic bags were introduced to supermarkets in 1977 • The average family will use 60 plastic bags on four visits to the supermarket • Only 1-3% of plastic bags are recycled worldwide • Plastic bags cause the death of many marine animals when they are mistaken for food • In the North Pacific Ocean, there are six times more plastic debris than plankton • Plastic bags are produced using petroleum, natural gas and other chemicals. Its production is toxic to the environment. (Source: http://www.theworldcounts.com/ stories/interesting-facts-about-plastic-bags)

Village Market continues to play a key role in various benevolent activities throughout the year. Should you wish make a difference through any of our charity initiatives, email: pr@villagemarket-kenya.com or call 020 712 2488/90

ELAINE

kehew

HAND -painted POP! AN EXHIBITION BY ELAINE KEHEW From 1-4 September, renowned artist Elaine Kehew will be showcasing her recent work at Village Market’s Exhibition Hall. VB had a chance to speak to her on her upcoming exhibition.

How would you describe your technique? I use a few different methods. Often I begin by making a small sketch, which is a combination of pencil and digital collage, to get the size of the objects and the placement correct. Then, I free-hand the design on to a canvas. If the type is very specific, like it is in the advertisements and logos, I will draw it using a projector. I them paint by hand, which is where you get the slight imperfections. I use fluid acrylic paint and a floppy brush so that the lines are smooth and even.

What is Hand-Painted Pop about? This is will be an exhibition of 30 original oil and acrylic paintings and woodcut prints, all on the theme of Kenya or East Africa’s consumer culture.

Why the focus on this particular subject matter? I was really struck by the crisis of the unga (maize flour) shortage, and the impact that it has had on my family, friends, neighbours and all of the people of Kenya. I wanted to portray how commercial enterprise is embedded in our everyday lives and to have some fun with the imagery. I also find that the packaging in Kenya and the advertising is different to that in the West, and wanted to highlight those differences.

14

What exactly is pop art? Pop art is, to me, accessible fine art using imagery found in everyday life. That means that a loaf of Supaloaf bread or a bottle of Fanta is fair game for inclusion. Of course, this started with Jasper Johns and Andy Warhol in the United States, and Warhol has been a huge influence for me. Often with symbols or signs (think Where can people see numbers, targets or your work? road signs) that are incorporated into paintI love it when people visit my studio. You can book ings. For me, and for a a visit by sending an email to elaine@elainekehew. lot of people, it gives a com or follow me on Facebook www.facebook. way into art that may com/elainekehewart or Instagram www.instahave been inaccessible gram.com/elainekehew. Everyone’s welcome to in the past. I don’t think my exhibition at Village Market in September. We will have a kids’ art should be elite, but day on Saturday 2nd September from 2pm-4pm in the afternoon rather for everyone to during which we will make a pop art painting. enjoy and relate to.

A

taste OF THE east

The latest addition to Village Market is East – an Asian street food restaurant with a fresh twist. AJ Lee, the proprietor of East, spoke to #VMFoodie on what to expect at Village Market’s newest dining experience. Does East have vegetarian options on the menu?

What is East all about? Like the name suggests, East brings a taste of Seoul street food to Village Market’s food court. Our menu is very unique in that many of the items are not what you would commonly find in any of the Asian restaurants currently operating in Nairobi. We specialise in items that are popular as street food in Korea. At East, we give traditional Asian dishes a modern twist. We create something fast yet fresh and unique to a food court. Fifteen minutes should be the longest time one should expect to wait for a freshly prepared meal.

What are some of the menu items customers should be excited to try for the first time in Nairobi? One of the popular street food items in Korea is the Rice Stix. We also have Bulgogi, which is Korean barbecued beef.

20

We have a fully dedicated vegetarian section in our kitchen to ensure that there is no contact between the vegetarian food and any meat. There is a vegetarian preparation area, vegetarian sink to wash the ingredients, as well as a separate vegetarian deep fryer and of course woks. All our meals are freshly made and there is no pre-cooked food. We prep sauces and marinade the beef a day before. We don’t cut corners with ingredients. Our vegetables come from Zucchini and our meat and poultry is supplied by Farmers Choice. We do our best to make sure everything is good, clean and fast.

What are some of your favourites on the menu? For those who like spicy dishes, I would recommend the Dakgalbi, which is our spicy chicken topped off with mozzarella cheese. For a spicy

pork dish, the crispy pork belly is my favourite marinated with the home-made kimchi. I would also recommend the black bean noodles, which is a delicious vegetarian noodle dish made with black bean sauce and topped off with fresh cucumber.

As the newest entrant at Village Market’s food court, what should customers expect at East? Expect new flavours and a taste of the Far East. Our food is as authentic as it would be in Seoul. And our prices are very affordable as it would be in the streets of Seoul. We have a wide variety of dishes to cater to different tastes and we have specials every month. Everyone will definitely find something to enjoy at East.

What is the Orchid experience in your words? In Iran, there is a saying that a good perfume sells itself. I would say it’s the same with Orchid: you have to try it for yourself to believe how good it is. In my experience, 95 per cent of our diners are extremely satisfied after their first visit. We serve authentic Persian dishes that are rooted in a century-old tradition of cooking methods. At Orchid, each ingredient has been carefully chosen for rich and healthy culinary experience.

What are some of the items on the Orchid menu? Our menu consists of both meat and vegetable dishes. Twenty-five per cent of the meat dishes are stewed while the majority are barbecued

THE SHOW ON EARTH The wildebeest migration is indeed worth waiting for

T

he Great Migration is one of the most spectacular events in the world. Millions of nomadic wildebeest migrate between the Masai Mara and the Serengeti during the months of June and July. Those that arrive safely to the Masai Mara move further into the grassland to graze the endless and plentiful lush green plains. It is also the wildebeest mating season. Dominant bulls outshine each other while calling out to potential mates, filling the plains – in numbers and in sound.

MARA TRIANGLE The spectacle is at its peak when large herds of wildebeest gather on the shores of the crocodile-infested Mara River in the Mara Triangle. Getting ready to cross the river, the herds grow more and more agitated. Crocodiles move in place patiently while other carnivores stealthily wait on the other side for a possible meal. Overwhelmed by their nerves, some wildebeest jump into the river, triggering a mammalian avalanche pouring down into the Mara River. Prey comes face to face with predator – survival of the fittest. Most visitors marvel at the spectacle of the famous river crossings but the true attraction of the migration is the sight of more than 1.2 million wildebeest, one million Burchell’s zebra and Thomson’s gazelle and about 20,000 eland filling the entire stretch of landscape. The shifting columns of the herds as they traverse the valleys and the hills is worth capturing. There is nothing else like this on earth. At the end of October, when most of the grass in the Mara savannah has been depleted, the wildebeest prepare to move southwards towards the Serengeti. Scientists believe that the old wildebeest can sense water up to a distance of 50 km away using lightning and thunder as the guiding light. These patriarchs will urge the herds onwards in search of water and greener pastures. And yet again begin the cycle of life.

BETWEEN the LINES WHISPER AT DAWN Frank Coates

THE BOOK OF JOY SWING TIME His Holiness the Dalai Lama and Archbishop Desmond Tutu with Douglas Abrams

Nobel Peace Prize Laureates His Holiness the Dalai Lama and Archbishop Desmond Tutu have survived more than fifty years of exile and the soul-crushing violence of oppression. Despite their hardships — or, as they would say, because of them — they are two of the most joyful people on the planet. In April 2015, Archbishop Tutu travelled to the Dalai Lama’s home in Dharamsala, India, to celebrate His Holiness’s 80th birthday and to create what they hoped would be a gift for others. They looked back on their long lives to answer a single burning question: How do we find joy in the face of life’s inevitable suffering? They traded intimate stories, teased each other continually, and shared their spiritual practices. By the end of a week filled with laughter and punctuated with tears, these two global heroes had stared into the abyss and despair of our time and revealed how to live a life brimming with joy. This book offers us a rare opportunity to experience their astonishing and unprecedented week together, from the first embrace to the final goodbye.

26

Zadie Smith

Two brown girls dream of being dancers — but only one, Tracey, has talent. The other has ideas: about rhythm and time, about black bodies and black music, what constitutes a tribe, or makes a person truly free. It’s a close but complicated childhood friendship that ends abruptly in their early twenties, never to be revisited, but never quite forgotten, either. Tracey makes it to the chorus line but struggles with adult life, while her friend leaves the old neighbourhood behind, traveling the world as an assistant to a famous singer, Aimee, observing close up how the one percent live. But when Aimee develops grand philanthropic ambitions, the story moves from London to West Africa, where diaspora tourists travel back in time to find their roots, young men risk their lives to escape into a different future, the women dance just like Tracey — the same twists, the same shakes — and the origins of a profound inequality are not a matter of distant history, but a present dance to the music of time.

It’s the dawn of the 20th century. Dan Sullivan, a young Queensland drover, signs up for an adventure fighting the Boers, only to discover that the horrors of war go beyond the battlefields. In East Africa, a railway crosses a wilderness populated by an unimaginable throng of wild animals. It is the golden age of the white hunter – men whose exciting lives entice the wealthy to go in search of big, dangerous game. After many failed attempts on the Dark Continent, old Bill Freeman sees his chance to make his fortune in East Africa as a hunter and convinces newly-arrived Dan to join his fledgling safari company. Freeman Safaris prospers with rich clients prepared to pay well for the chance to bag a hunting trophy. Dan learns the trade but discovers that stalking big game is only part of the danger of escorting the clients and their pampered wives. The dysfunctional Freeman family join Bill, but Africa has ways to test the best intentions. Bill’s young granddaughter, Liz, falls in love with Dan and with Africa, but tragedy forces her to return to Australia and her uncaring grandmother. Years later, as the shadow of the Great War falls across the continent, Liz returns to Africa and the man she has dreamed about since childhood. But Dan has secrets that threaten to shatter their love, and he must finally decide what courage truly means.

THE SPY

Paulo Coelho Her only crime was to be an independent woman. When Mata Hari arrived in Paris she was penniless. Within months she was the most celebrated woman in the city. As a dancer, she shocked and delighted audiences; as a courtesan, she bewitched the era’s richest and most powerful men. But as paranoia consumed a country at war, Mata Hari’s lifestyle brought her under suspicion. In 1917, she was arrested in her hotel room on the Champs Elysees, and accused of espionage. Told in Mata Hari’s voice through her final letter, The Spy is the unforgettable story of a woman who dared to defy convention and who paid the ultimate price.
