shopping!

othing brightens up a dull day like getting yourself something new. A new pair of heels, a new hairdo, freshly manicured nails, trying out something new on the menu of a food outlet – the little things certainly make for great retail therapy. After unveiling a new section of the mall, Village Market is giving you more new outlets to make your shopping experience even more fulfilling.

I

n this issue, we feature just a few of these outlets (we couldn’t fit them all here). Trust us to have your favourite shopping categories covered: health and beauty, fashion and accessories, services, essentials, arts and crafts, and so much more! October being Breast Cancer Awareness Month, we highlight the efforts of one of the charities we support – Eddah’s Hope Cancer Foundation. We also urge all our shoppers to get tested and get more information on breast cancer. We’ve had some exciting times these past few months, with lots of events and activities to keep you entertained. Read all about then in our Village Scene section and diarise our upcoming events on our Village Planner, including a masterpiece of an art exhibition by the Little Art Gallery. This is the best time of the year at Village Market, with lots of offers, festivals, cocktail parties and promotions lined up. And, it’s all for you!

GIRLFRIENDS CONFIDENTIAL 16th September

Media personalities Victoria Rubadiri, Sharon Mundia and Tabitha Tongoi headlined September’s Girlfriends Confidential forum, which focused on the topic of selfvalidation. Ladies from all walks of life engaged the panellists and each other in a cheerful discussion. It was an open, friendly forum that allowed participants to share their challenges and successes. Girlfriends Confidential is an event held at Village Market three times a year in honour of women and their experiences in life.

ISK’S INSPIRED SHOPPING 16th September

The International School of Kenya, in partnership with Village Market’s loyalty programme Bonus Card, recently launched a campaign dubbed ‘Inspired Shopping’. This partnership will enable Bonus Card members to donate their Bonus Card points towards ISK’s student-led community outreach initiatives. For every donation made towards the ‘Inspired Shopping’ campaign, the Village Market will donate a further 50% of the value of the points. This campaign kicked off at the school’s annual ‘welcome back’ picnic. The picnic was filled with fun activities for staff, parents and students to enjoy and bond over good food, music and games at the start of a new school year. During the picnic, Village Market staff spent time with the ISK community, informing them more about the campaign, while signing up new shoppers to the Bonus Card programme. ISK students have created over 50 community outreach initiatives in pursuit of a better world. Some of these include interacting with children on the autism spectrum, caring for abandoned animals, tree planting, scholarship programmes and much more.

Village EDDAH’S HOPE CANCER FOUNDATION

A

tale is told of a young man who finds out that his beloved mother is suffering from breast cancer. In retrospect, he realises that she has been hiding it away from him; and doing a good job at that. As a young person, hearing that the strongest person you’ve ever known is at the last stage of the illness was a hard hit. Fighting cancer takes an immense physical, psychological and financial toll on those diagnosed with it, as well as those who care for them. This is the story of Issaji Moussah, his younger brother, and that of many other young people – the group most affected by cancer. Just like in Mama Eddah’s household, cancer affects millions of families across the world. In the developing world, its impact is felt much harder in the face of poverty, corruption, illiteracy and misdiagnosis due to lack of capacity, as well as inadequacy of facilities and access to professional medical assistance. The passing of Mama Eddah marked the beginning of a movement described as a fighting ring, to ensure that others would not experience what Issaji went through and that no young person would have to watch their parent or loved one go through such

a terrible ordeal feeling totally helpless and broken. At Eddah’s Hope, we strongly believe that no mother should go through the struggle and pain of cancer alone. Mothers are an integral part of any society and they give so much without asking for anything in return. That is why when a mother is faced with the burden of cancer, we should all come together and make the journey easier for her. It is the least we can do as a society, hence the hashtag #FightingforMama.

MEDICAL COVER As an organisation, impact is at the heart of our operations. The Mama Eddah Memorial Fund was established to assist in paying for the medical covers of needy and disadvantaged women and families diagnosed with cancer all across Kenya. Out of 45 million Kenyans, only 6.8 million are currently covered by NHIF. Although the government seeks to raise

those without. As of July 2017, we have been able to pay medical covers for 301 needy women/families at a cost of KES 6,000 per woman/family, totalling KES 1.8 million. We intend to raise funds to provide medical covers to over 1,000 mothers/ families affected by cancer.

YOUNG CANCER SOLDIER CLUBS

RAISING FUNDS: Over 300 families have benefited so far this number to 13.8 million over the next five years, close to 32 million Kenyans will still not be able to access this medical insurance cover. Given that NHIF caters for cancer treatment, needy families and especially those from marginalised areas have access to professional care including radiotherapy – a 28-day continuous process offered only in the two public referral hospitals in the country. During various kinds of treatment, patients get a bed and a hot meal. It’s noteworthy that 80% of patients with medical cover are more likely to complete treatment, compared to

Among our other projects is the Young Cancer Soldier Clubs, under our advocacy and capacity building programme. The aim of this project is to primarily nurture a generation that is more knowledgeable on the prevention, treatment and management of cancer. We are also rolling out research as a key area of informing our projects as well as stakeholders. This way, we are fighting cancer from a more informed point. We have managed to get to where we are through meaningful and impactful partnerships with individuals, organisations and corporations. Such has been the experience in our interaction with Village Market. They have been of great help as we fundraise for the organisation. We encourage the public to #jointhemovement because together we can do more. The avenues of joining include, but are not limited to, volunteering (your skills in our offices or during projects), becoming a member, fundraising, donating and buying #cancersoldier gear. LITTLE ART GALLERY

V

illage Market is set to host a breathtaking art exhibition. The exhibition will feature two artists in their prime – Peter Elung’at and Patrick Kinuthia, and a fast rising star – Clavers Odhiambo. All share a passion for the study of the human form. Elung’at is the dreamer, Kinuthia the observer, and Clavers the strenuous realist. In this exhibition, they show their recent artworks that accentuate their respective styles and how their works are derived. These three styles that the artists use to compose their works are the anchors for the show. The exhibition is curated by William S. Ndwiga of the Little Gallery, Nairobi. The Little Art Gallery organises themed exhibitions locally and advices art collectors looking to invest in East African art.

influence on his practise. Back in the day, the Madonna-like Angelica, with soft and vulnerable beauty, was independent of the artist. Today, she has become a split entity of the artist – a reflection of his thoughts and critical events in his life. Elung’at is arguably one of the fastest-selling artists in East Africa with his works having greatly appreciated in value since he was recognised by the market as a rich investment. Unlike many of his colleagues who largely rely upon foreign markets, Elung’at has managed to carve a niche market among the local art collectors.

PETER ELUNG’AT

Born in Nairobi’s Red Hill – near the Ngecha art village – in 1968, Kinuthia’s first job as an artist was at his family’s movie business (Citizen Cinema) between 1985 and 1989 as a publicity artist for various movie halls. He worked under Pakistani realist artist and mural painter Mohamed Rafiq. He later became a graphic designer and joined Kenya Polytechnic College to study graphic design. In 1997, he became a freelance artist. He largely paints live models, common day

Many consider him a reincarnation of the great classical ages. The self-taught Elung’at started painting in the late 90s and later joined Kuona Trust, then at the Kenya National Museum, as one of the resident artists. His style is quite unique, evoking thoughts about the masters of the Baroque era. He largely paints one semi-fictional woman: Angelica, and her thoughts, her dreams, her fears and her life. Angelica was a personality that brushed his life when he was just starting out and has obviously had profound if not absolute

scenes such as markets, landscapes and wildlife. Kinuthia has become one of the most exhibited and highly collectable artists in the region. “My early influences were Norman Rockwell. His photographic-like paintings captivated me. I later got to see prints of David Shepherd wildlife art and it inspired me to do wildlife paintings.”

CLAVERS ODHIAMBO

PATRICK KINUTHIA ARTIST: Patrick Kinuthia

Clavers is a young Kenyan visual artist whose style falls largely under realism. In his recent studies, he has embarked on investigating the essence of portraiture – the being in his subjects. He is strenuously endeavouring to merge the outer obvious likeness with the hidden character of his subjects; painting the soul. Formerly based at the Dust Depo studios, where he worked alongside other fellow artists and notable names like Patrick Mukabi, he now has his own studio. He is also an illustration undergraduate from the University of Nairobi. Clavers had his first duo exhibition at the Alliance Francaise Nairobi and has also exhibited at other notable venues in Nairobi.

PINKOPALLINO

FINDING AT PINKOPALLINO A toddler breaks free from his mother’s grasp. Since he is learning how to walk, he can only hobble all the way towards a window at one of the outlets at Village Market. He peers into the shop, a wide smile. Enchanted by the colourful display of furniture in his eye line, he begins to bang on the glass window.

This reaction puzzles his mother who draws closer to see what it is that has captured her child’s attention. And there they both stand – mother and child, enchanted by the play of colour, passion, rhythm and love that is Pinkopallino furniture.

PINKOPALLINO

P

inkopallino is the brainchild of Jutta Gavidia Wilhelm. Jutta was drawn to the arts from a young age and started designing when she was just 13. She studied in Europe and travelled to various countries where she practiced her art. While living in Chile, she discovered low-carbon, malleable steel which she began to incorporate into her designs. Later, she moved to Africa and began to combine metal and glass in her works of art. Jutta’s style has continued to transform in ways that echo her expertise and experiences. Her latest designs are a contemporary fusion of African artefacts and textiles – a reflection of the African impulses currently at play in her life.

HAPPINESS “My hand follows the choreography of my soul,” she says. “If my soul is happy, it reflects in my work.” And that happiness is evident in the Ankara fabric couches and charming lamps hanging from the ceiling of Jutta’s outlet at Village Market. The brush strokes and polka dots on the painted

lamps reach out to every shopper, while the couches in various heights and lengths call out to be stroked and warmly admired. At Pinkopallino, the fine line between form and function fades away. These two elements of art blend so effortlessly together to offer shoppers furnishings that are matchless yet affordable. For instance, one cannot help but be drawn to the teardrop-shaped lamp peeking from the corner of the room. Or the femininity,

majesty and simplicity of a pink Ankara-covered couch. All across the studio are these enchanting items: mirrors, desk, chandeliers, and chairs. By working with local artisans, Jutta brings to life modern homes and offices, as well as hotels and public spaces across the country.

ART

PINKOPALLINO: A fusion of African Her work is inspired by the ethos: “Art is everything which cannot be explained, artefacts and taken apart. It cannot be eliminated. Art textiles

is there to be discovered. To make you understand what you didn’t know before. It can be heard without sound. It can be felt without physical contact. It can be seen. Art opens up all the channels of being alive – weep, yearn, feel, see and ultimately find love.”
