A

s Village Market launched a brand new phase within its shopping complex, a number of tenants had their own ceremonies to mark the official opening of their shops. Shoppers, family, friends and fellow tenants joined these outlets in their ribbon-cutting, champagne-toasting and cake-cutting festivities. In their own way they celebrated yet another milestone in their business journey – opening a branch within one of East Africa’s most prestigious malls. We welcome our new tenants to the Village Market family – a family that has grown bigger over the last 23 years.

asic first aid, like placing a band-aid over a cut or stopping a nosebleed, are just some of the skills most of us are aware of. However, life’s larger dangers demand that we continuously upgrade our lifesaving abilities. It is for this reason that the African Health & Safety Academy (AHSA) has introduced effective solutions for fire emergencies.

THE ‘ZIMA MOTO’ FIRE FIGHTER This revolutionary, eco-friendly coolant comes in the form of a spray or ‘throw’ extinguisher. The ‘throw’ type is a rapid rescue fire tool that weighs no more than 700 grams. In the event of an unfortunate fire emergency, all you have to do is simply throw it into the fire. On the other hand, the ‘spray’ type is a rapid rescue fire tool in the form of an aerosol can and has a spray range of over three metres. As smoke-suppressants, these fire extinguishers can be used on all types of fires. Due to their portability and ease-of-use, they are ideal for women, children, the elderly and the physically challanged. They do not require prior training or annual inspections either. These non-explosive, non-corrosive extinguishers have a shelf life of five years. Get your rapid rescue tools today and ensure the safety of your family and property.

AHSA: Solutions for fire emergencies country. The ability to provide effective life-saving first aid interventions requires instruction and practical training. This is especially true where it relates to potentially fatal illnesses and injuries. Procedures such as Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) and the Heimlich manoeuvre may be invasive, and carry a risk of further injury to the patient and the provider. As with any training, it is more useful if it occurs before an actual emergency.

TIRAMISU’S SPECIAL AND CINNAMON BREAD

cranberry

The festive season is a time for baking, whether you’re making holiday breads, cookies, pies or other goodies. Our bakers at Tiramisu love to experiment with unique flavours to offer signature breads just for you. We love the tradition and skill that goes into baking artisanal breads, traditional Italian pastries and French gateaux. It’s the fresh, natural ingredients, the skill of our bakers and the time we patiently take to create the perfect treat that gets everyone talking. And all best enjoyed with our aromatic coffee from the heart of Naples. Besides, isn’t it all about la dolce vita?

CHALLAH BREAD WITH HONEY & CINNAMON

CRANBERRY & CINNAMON BREAD This holiday season Tiramisu brings to you a very special cranberry and cinnamon bread. The bread is best served toasted, where the rich flavours come to life. Cranberry and cinnamon bread lends itself beautifully to a grilled cheese sandwich. If any of the loaf survives long enough to go stale, it can be used to make a festive batch of French toast. Cranberry and cinnamon bread will keep at room temperature in a bread tin for three to four days. For longer storage, slice the loaf of bread, put it into a large freezer bag and then freeze it for up to two months. That way you can pop the frozen slices in the toaster as needed.

20

Challah bread with honey and cinnamon is a traditional Jewish braided bread. An unbelievably tender loaf that is so fluffy and soft, it melts on your tongue. Even then, it still boasts enough structure to hold up to the toaster or better yet, a French toast batter. Challah bread with honey and cinnamon is perfect for a Christmas breakfast or as a holiday baking treat. It serves up wonderfully with cinnamon honey butter.

CINNAMON HONEY BUTTER RECIPE Ingredients • 1 cup (2 sticks) salted butter, room temperature • 1 cup powdered sugar • 1 cup honey • 2 teaspoons cinnamon

Instructions Whisk your mixer to beat the butter for one minute. Add the powdered sugar, honey and cinnamon. Beat on low until the powdered sugar is incorporated, then beat on medium for a short while. Scrape the sides and bottom, and then beat again until it is smooth. Store how you normally store butter. (Put it in the fridge if you plan on keeping it for longer. Either way it should be served room temperature.)

noteca is a wine retail concept that offers a wide selection of wines from Italy at Village Market. Nebiat Tekle-Corino, proprietor of this establishment, credits her fatherin-law, a winemaker, for introducing her to the finer delights of Italian wine and cuisine. Seeing a gap in the Kenyan market, Nebiat set up Enoteca back in 2012 to provide a selection of Sicilian wines to fellow wine lovers. According to Nebiat, the wines in stock are those from wineries most representative of the region they come from, including wineries that provide a lower price range for customers. Current customers have particularly taken a liking to Prosecco, but there are wines available for all tastes and occasions. Apart from wine, Enoteca also imports Sicilian olive oil and a variety of pesto, pâtés and sauces that bring authentic Italian flavour to your dishes. Enoteca’s olive oil has also proven to be a popular food item, with Nebiat saying she is happy to keep up with the demand.

Enoteca (plural: enoteche) is an Italian word that is derived from the Greek word, which literally means 'wine repository.' It is used to describe a special type of local or regional wine shop that originated in Italy. The concept of an enoteca has also spread to some other countries. Enoteche have expanded north of the Alps to Austria under the German name Vinothek and from Austria to Germany. A genuine enoteca is primarily directed at giving visitors or tourists the possibility to taste these wines at a reasonable fee and possibly to buy them. Courtesy of Wikipedia.com Having moved Enoteca to the newly expanded wing of Village Market, Nebiat promises an even better experience for shoppers. “We have some pre-Christmas offers and discounts available this holiday season. We will also have wine tasting from 5pm to 8pm daily, so that customers can learn more about our wines and also be able to better select the ones they prefer the most.” With well-trained and friendly staff ready to assist you in making your selections, Enoteca promises total satisfaction for your palette every time you pay a visit to this little corner of Italy at Village Market.

YOUR TYRE’S contact PATCH

By Reema Doshi

KINGSWAY TYRES – PR & MARKETING MANAGER

A car tyre is the only point of contact between the vehicle and the road surface. It serves as a link between the vehicle and the road ensuring safety at all times. The part of a passenger tyre that is in actual contact with the road is about the size of the palm of your hand, whereas the part in contact with the road for a truck tyre is about the size of two palms.

T

he legal minimum tyre tread depth for a passenger tyre is 1.6mm. Anything close to or at the same level as 1.6mm means that your tyres are due for replacement. In addition to steering, acceleration and braking, the contact patch also aids in cornering, grip and comfort. The contact patch in tyres also supports the entire weight of the vehicle, receives steering commands and avoids obstacles.

26

HOW TO CHECK YOUR TYRE’S TREAD DEPTH All tyres have tread depth indicators positioned on the tyre outer sidewall by a Bibendum (as in the case of Michelin tyres), or a triangular mark. These marks

lead to a notch inside the tyre that is set at 1.6mm. The notch allows one to easily check the tyre’s tread depth. It is advisable to check it regularly. This guarantees maximum traction and grip, helping you avoid any unpleasant surprises. opening

I

t was a night of glitz and glamour as Village Market officially opened yet another section of the shopping and recreation complex to the public. On Friday 24th November, Nairobi’s elite, investors, retail enthusiasts, and government officials gathered at Village Market to witness the grand opening of phase seven of the mall. The section of the mall had been under construction for close to five years at a cost of KES 4 billion. Now complete with a tenant occupancy rate of 95%, it was time for the big reveal. The event was graced by Cabinet Secretaries Najib Balala (Tourism), Dan Kazungu (Mining) and Judy Wakhungu (Environment). Nairobi’s Deputy Governor Polycarp Igathe was also present. The recently completed retail section of the mall adds 230,000 square feet of lettable space to the development’s footprint, yielding over 100 new shops to the project. Designed by Les Harbottle and Symbion Consulting Group, the seventh expansion phase includes the addition of over 900 parking bays, a business and conferencing hotel, a 14,000 square foot indoor play area for children, a trampoline

Of all our expansion projects, this has been the most exciting park, laser tag, 11-pin bowling, a food market and a 30,000 sq ft gym (the largest in the region), all of which will open in the first quarter of 2018. Speaking during the event, Village Market’s Managing Director Hamed Ehsani noted the significance of the new development. He said, “Of all our expansion projects, this has been the most exciting. Village Market, throughout the years, has sought to understand the needs and desires of Nairobi, and to push the boundaries of retail and recreation by introducing the most cutting-edge concepts from around the world.”

The retail space has already attracted a number of international operators, heralding their entry into the East African market. Established South African major gym brand Ignite Fitness will open their first Kenyan location at Village Market, a 30,000 sq ft space with professional fitness instructors offering over 100 fitness classes every day. South African clothing brands Foschini, Celio and Markham will operate alongside French designer label Jennyfer, marking their respective entries to the region.

GLAMOUR: Grand opening

Evelyn Ngenga, the mall’s PR and Marketing Manager, said, “We are extremely excited by the number of young Kenyan brands opening at Village Market.” Designing Africa Collective – a shop by Kenyan fashion influencer and stylist Diana Opoti – represents several Kenyan and African designers. Homegrown fashion label One Hundred Years continues their expansion and Brown’s Cheese opens their first retail outlet in the brandnew Food Market. Ehsani noted, “With this new phase, our customers will appreciate a new language of architecture and experience new shopping concepts that did not previously exist in Nairobi.” Environment Cabinent Secretary Judy Wakhungu took the opportunity to congratulate Village Market for this achievement and for being the first mall to comply with the ban of plastic bags. "We are impressed and fascinated. Hongera!" Tourism Cabinet Secretary Najib Balala noted the level of investment that it had taken to put up such a facility, and reiterated his efforts together with Deputy Governor Polycarp Igathe to guarantee an environment that favors similar investments. Trademark Hotel – the development’s hospitality component – is scheduled to open in the first quarter of 2018. The 215 room hotel will feature conferencing facilities for up to 500 people and a rooftop pool. Tribe Hotel – the group’s first venture into hospitality – is a 137room luxury boutique hotel.
