THAT MATTERS E

ven though grocery shopping may not be exciting for most people, it’s not something that can be wished away. Back in 2015, Business Insider Intelligence conducted a study to find out why Americans don’t shop online for groceries. They found 59% of the respondents said that they preferred to select their own fruits and vegetables, 39% said that they wanted to take advantage of the in-store deals and 33% confirmed that they had the time to go grocery shopping. These factors are similar for shoppers in Nairobi, perhaps in more varying degrees. It means that supermarkets and grocery stores are here to stay. That is why Village Market is set to offer a wider choice of supermarkets catering to the diverse range of shoppers that come to the shopping complex. In this issue of Village Beat, we want to appreciate the concept of shopping for basic items. We want to honour that stuff that gets us through the week – milk, bread and kitchen towels – because at the end of the day, those items that fill up our fridges, kitchen cabinets and pantries are the items that really matter. So go on, put on a comfy pair of shoes, let down your hair and come shopping with us for the basic stuff! It’s always lovely to keep you updated on what’s happening at Village Market. Village www.villagemarket-kenya.com STRAIGHT FROM THE HEART 14th February

St. Valentine’s Day is an annual festival that celebrates love, friendship and admiration. Every year on 14th February, people from across the world mark this special day by exchanging gifts and sending messages of love to their partners, family and friends. Village Market made it easier for shoppers to express their love with themed decor, flowers and chocolate. There were shop promotions and sales from various outlets around the mall. Customers also had an opportunity to take photos inside the ‘love bauble’. The highlight of the weekend was a three-day concert which included performances by Afro-jazz band Ricky Na Marafiki, country music crew Steve Rogers and the Highway Band, and contemporary R&B crooners Redfourth, Fila and The Movement.

Village EARTH DAY 2018 End Plastic Pollution

A

few months have passed since the ban on plastic bags came into effect in Kenya. The ban met its fair share of resistance but over time Kenyans found alternative bags to carry their wares around. Village Market was at the forefront of supporting this switch from plastic. Before the government ban came into effect, Village Market launched an exciting campaign named Jeans In, Bags Out. The campaign encouraged shoppers to bring in their old jeans and have them repurposed into durable shopping bags for free. In an effort to conserve the environment, the management team worked with a group of tailors in Kibera to transform the jeans into fashionable multi-use bags. The month-long campaign saw many shoppers acquire reusable, durable and unique bags, upcycled from their very own old jeans. Grocery stores, supermarkets and other outlets also made the switch from plastic bags and begun packing items in safer shopping bags.

CAMPAIGN: Jeans In, Bags Out!

One may argue that the environment is cleaner now. It has become increasingly rare to see the odd plastic bag blowing in the air only to land on a tree branch, or even worse, in a stream. While Kenya has gotten rid of one plastic problem, another continues to plague us – plastic bottles. This year’s commemoration of Earth Day on 22nd April is dedicated to providing the information and inspiration needed to fundamentally change human attitudes and behaviour about plastics. According to EarthDay.org, plastics in various forms continue to poison and injure marine life. From littering our beaches and landscapes to clogging our waterways, waste streams and landfills, the exponential growth of plastics is now threatening the survival of our planet. Early this year, it was reported that Kenya’s National Environmental Management Agency (NEMA) might soon ban the production, sales and use of plastic bottles, if manufacturers failed to install collection points by 30th April this year. With this deadline fast approaching, Kenyans will be waiting for further communication from NEMA.

OUR ROLE In the meantime, Village Market will continue to play an active role in environmental conservation through exciting and inclusive strategies. Shoppers and tenants are encouraged to keep using the waste separation bins in the mall as they should be used. The bins are well marked with specific compartments for glass, plastic and biodegradable waste.

HAPPY AFRICA DAY! 25TH MAY

L

argely unmarked by many, 25th May is set aside to celebrate Africa Day. Back in 1958, the first conference of independent Africa brought together the fathers of Africa’s liberations movements to reject colonial rule and find commonality among the free states at the time. This conference laid the vision for the formation of the Organisation of African Unity (OAU). On 25th May 1963, the OAU was formed by the 32 free nations in Africa and led by Tanzania’s Julius Nyerere, Ghana’s Kwame Nkrumah, Sékou Touré of Guinea and Kenneth Kaunda of Zambia.

MUCH TO CELEBRATE ABOUT AFRICA Africa Day is about honouring a continent that has so much going for and against it. It’s about celebrating a history and future of change-makers and talented individuals within and beyond the continent. Africa Day calls upon us to enjoy our enriching foods and our numerous resources that have helped build our nations. It is the day we lift up our philosophical art – the oral, written and performed literature, when we dance to our reverberating music and reflect on our profound poetry. It’s acknowledging our heritage and the

12

DANCING: Celebrating our roots

political struggles that challenge us to constantly search for a better way to govern ourselves. Africa Day also allows us to poke fun at our peculiarities, like our concept of time keeping (yes, African time is a thing).

AFRICA DAY AT VILLAGE MARKET HERITAGE: Teaching our children

Village Market will be making a big fuss of Africa Day this year. Expect lots of vivid colour, African sounds and the kind of vibrant activity one can only find at an African celebration. It doesn’t matter who you are or where you come from, this day is for all who appreciate what Africa has to offer. Here are a few pointers to enjoy the day: come dressed in your best show-stopping African regalia. Be inspired by various prints

and styles from all of Africa’s 54 countries and thousands upon thousands of African tribes. Enjoy our Africa Day evening concert at the food court. Headlining the show will be prolific singer, songwriter and percussionist Idd Aziz, as he performs an eclectic mix of music.

CELEBRATE WITH US Village Market is the home of art, so come pick up a few rare paintings from our in-mall gallery Artz. This year, Africa Day falls on a Friday that coincides with the weekly Maasai Market at the rooftop parking area. This is your opportunity to grab an African outfit and jewellery, or some ethnic furnishings and household items. If your taste is more exquisite, we recommend outlets like Kalabash, Designing Africa Collective, Oda Omo, Mille Collines, Adéle Dejak and the Pop-Up Store. Craving some African food? Indulge in the rich flavours found at Taste of Africa in the food court. They will have an Africa Day special just for you. So go on, mark your calendar and let’s meet at Village Market on Africa Day!

The Artist in Focus We host the prolific duo Ronex Ahimbisibwe and Kalule Herbert at the Village Market Exhibition Hall from 24th May to 4th June. In their own words they share their inspiration, creative process and stories. RONEX AHIMBISIBWE

Ronex Ahimbisibwe’s visual journey mainly entails studio research in a quest to discover his own capabilities, strength and doubts by tapping into the magic of the subconscious. He is always driven by one question: what if? Ronex believes in expressing oneself creatively in whatever form one may choose. For him creativity is not a straight line, neither should it be limited by style, medium, rules and norms. In his view, “creativity has no boundaries except those delimited by time and matter; one’s physical capacity for work in a quantifiable period of time-space”. Ronex’s desire has always been to create works that curiously blend in the fashion of the legendary double-edged sword: sophistication meeting naivety, chaos meeting order, beauty meeting ugliness, aesthetics meeting free expression and so on. His works have come to definitively

embody his joy, frustration, inspiration and perception into tangible objects. Much of his artworks include paintings, sculptures, woodcut prints, digital art and photography, furniture and mixed media installations. He uses a wide range of materials that include wood, bark cloth, paper, filler paste, glues, oil, outdoor paints, fibre glass and banana fibres. He has also been known to use sand, oxides, aluminium, zinc, bronze, sisal, recycled steel and cloth. Ronex is a distinguished artist who has showcased his work in over 15 countries including Uganda, Kenya, Tanzania, Germany, England, the USA and Australia. He quips, “art is not just a profession to me but my refuge and comfort…without it I seem lost". KALULE HERBERT

Exhibiting with Ronex is Herbert Kalule who is both a visual artist and a fabric designer. Born in 1983 in Kampala, Uganda, he is a self-taught illustrator who has learnt a lot from his fellow painters. He is also creative with textiles, with a very original use of colour. He is inspired by social activities and has participated in several local and international exhibitions.

MAKING SUPERMARKET SHOPPING

fun again

18

G

rocery shopping is not everyone’s cup of tea. However, it is just one of those must-do activities everyone has to cram into a busy week. Of course, grocery shopping differs from apparel shopping – a leisure activity most ladies enjoy alone or in pairs over some good gossip. But what can compare to the joy every woman feels walking out of her favourite fashion store with a new dress and cute bag? Grocery shopping on the other hand, can be quite a bore. It’s going from aisle to aisle, filling up a large trolley with food items. From cases of mineral water to bags of dog food, then reading labels, comparing prices, checking sell-by dates and finally hauling bulk items from shelf to trolley to till. Let’s not forget the threeyear old by your side that threatens to get lost every time you try to check out the new saucepans in aisle six! Village Market is bringing the fun back to grocery shopping. A number of supermarkets are set to open in different sections of the shopping mall. The supermarkets will be situated next

to various eateries, service stores and fashion outlets. This will give shoppers a seamless, stress-free and one-stop shopping experience. Wherever you are at the shopping mall you can easily grab a meal, do your banking and get to a supermarket for your weekly grocery shopping. Among the new stores is Village Supermarket, which is located in the new section of the mall. We spoke to director Ram Lokan on what the new store has to offer to shoppers.

What is the concept behind Village Supermarket? Village Supermarket is a family-run business that is built on three pillars: best product selection, best in-store experience and best customer service. We provide high-quality products tailored to meet the demands of our customer base. It’s our vision to become the premier supermarket in East Africa, with a unique selection of products and the best quality of service available.

What range of items is available at Village Supermarket? Village Supermarket is a full-service supermarket stocking a wide range of products. We have a general grocery and

beverages section as well as a bakery and butchery. We also have fresh produce and a deli that serves ready meals. Village Cellar is the liquor section of our supermarket and will stock a wide array of alcoholic drinks. You can also find various high-quality household goods in store including cutlery, pots, pans, home decor and pet food.

What are some of the discounts and offers that customers can get at Village Supermarket? We will always have regular offers in store for our customers. Holiday and seasonal promotions such as back-toschool, Easter and Christmas will have discounts on selected products. Our opening will also include a sale in the month of April on selected items to celebrate the arrival of Village Supermarket at Village Market.

Does Village Supermarket have a customer loyalty reward scheme? Village Supermarket’s loyalty reward is a card-based system where customers accumulate points based on the value of their purchase. The points can later be redeemed for items in the supermarket. We will also have a members’ discount available to cardholders. This

19

VILLAGE means you can get higher discounts on goods every time if you are a cardholding member.

A BELGIAN

experience

Alexandre Bakery opened its first outlet in Kenya 11 years ago. Village Market is proud to host the brand’s second outlet that opened late last year. We spoke to Alexandre’s proprietor Michel about the popular Belgian-inspired store.

What is unique about Alexandre Bakery? We like to create a charming atmosphere. Our products are known for their flavour and freshness. Everything at Alexandre is a signature item that caters to unique palates. Our inspired menu is a unique take on the bakery concept.

What are you most known for? We serve a wide selection of freshly baked pastries every day. Our black and white forest cakes are very popular with our clients. We make our breads using 20 different recipes throughout the year. We also have special seasonal breads like the braided bread with eggs, which is in demand during the Easter season.

Tell us more about your breads and what standards you have maintained over the years: We were the first bakery in Kenya to introduce the concept of round breads. Our sourdoughs are made from a special blend of stoneground flour containing rich, complex flavours. We were the first to offer foot-long breads that are great for sandwiches. At Alexandre, we don’t use margarine to bake our products and instead we use butter.

22

Your chocolates have also grown in demand over the years, correct? Yes, it is because we make them using only Belgian chocolate. When we first opened in Nairobi, the uptake was low. See, in Belgium, people tend to gift their loved ones quite often. At the end of the week, a man will often take flowers or a box of chocolates to their wife or girlfriend as a sign of appreciation. The Kenyan culture isn’t as expressive, but we have seen a shift of attitudes overtime among middle-class Kenyans who are now buying more of our chocolates and cakes as gifts to their loved ones.

snack-bar experience. It’s a very unique and healthy approach to fast food. We understand that our customers are looking for a quick meal for lunch or even to go. We also create the right environment and set the right standards, so we can deliver the best quality and taste of our food.

What makes Alexandre Bakery a great dining spot?

Why should everyone have a meal at Alexandre Bakery?

The sandwiches and salads are very different. We have taken the concept of the French and Belgian bakery and localised it to offer a great

We don’t compromise on our ingredients. For instance, 60% of our black forest cake is comprised of Belgian chocolate. We also use cherries rather than strawberries, which we often have to import to get the exact bitter taste a black forest cake should have. Fresh cream is also added to cakes. At Alexandre we want families to enjoy their meals and our job is to help create special moments for friends and families. From the distinct way we serve our coffee to the way we make our sandwiches, there is something for everyone at Alexandre.

Makes 12 mini tacos • 12 king prawns • 200 g basic mayonnaise • 2 ripe avocados • 2 semi-ripe mangoes • 1 tsp sesame oil • 4 limes • 4 tsp olive oil • 1 tsp tabasco • 1 tsp coriander seeds • 100g leeks

• 1.5 ltrs mineral water • Salt to taste • Black pepper to taste • Romaine lettuce or any other crunchy lettuce • 250 g caster sugar • 250 g white wine vinegar • Corn oil for frying

METHOD

1. POACH THE PRAWNS Poaching Liquid Bring to a boil the water with coriander seeds, fresh coriander stems, leeks and sea salt and boil for seven minutes, strain and set aside. Prawns Bring the poaching liquid to a boil, immerse the prawns and remove from the heat. Let the prawns sit in the hot water for four minutes, transfer to a container with salted water and ice. Allow to cool completely. Remove the head and the shell around the tail. With a very sharp knife cut the ‘belly’ of the prawns in order to open it. Remove the black string and season the prawns with salt, olive oil and few drops of soy sauce and lime. Set aside. 2. MAKE THE SAUCES AND PREPARE THE CONDIMENTS Sweet Mayo Add sesame oil, honey and lime juice to the basic mayonnaise, season to taste and keep refrigerated.

Spicy Avocado Cream Blend together the previously cleaned avocado with lime juice, olive oil, Tabasco, finely chopped chives and little sweet mayo. Keep refrigerate in an airtight container to avoid oxidation. Pickled Mango For the pickling liquid, mix together 250 g of vinegar and 250 g of caster sugar. Bring to a boil and set aside to cool at room temperature. Peel the mango and cut in rectangles of 7 cm long and 1 cm wide. Set the mango in a glass jar. Bring the pickling liquid to a boil and pour inside the jars. Allow to cool at room temperature and keep refrigerated overnight before use. 3. MAKE THE TACO SHELLS AND PREPARE LETTUCE Taco Shells Deep fry the corn tortilla dough and set aside on a paper towel, season to taste (should remain golden in colour and soft in texture). You can substitute with store-bought tortillas and mini taco shells. Lettuce Shred the lettuce and set aside. 4. ASSEMBLING THE DISH Lightly season the shredded lettuce with salt and pepper and little sweet mayo. With the little spoon, place some avocado cream on the warm tortillas, then follow with some seasoned shredded lettuce, the pickled mango and more avocado cream. Place the prawn on top and garnish with few drops of avocado cream, chives, lime zest and rock salt.

fter sitting in traffic for a long while, the cars in front of you finally start moving. You press hard on your car’s accelerator, hoping to finally make it out of that messy gridlock. But as fate would have it, the traffic lights turn red just as you approach the roundabout. Maybe you can make a quick dash for it? Just then, a cop raises his hand and tells you to hold your horses. You bring your car to a halt – now you are the first car in the long stretch of traffic.

CHECKING YOUR TYRES As you wait (again), the cop approaches your vehicle to inspect it. He first takes a look at your insurance sticker – when does it expire? Next it’s your tyres – when did you last change them? Mkubwa asks you for your driver’s license and inspects it too. He then calls you by your name and asks if you are aware that your tyres are worn out. Before you can respond, he tells you to pull to the side of the road – you’re clearly not going anywhere any time soon.

26

Not only are worn out tyres ugly, they are also a road hazard. With the rainy season upon us, it is increasingly dangerous to drive on tyres with a tread that is quickly thinning out. If not budgeted for, a set of tyres can be an expensive purchase. Then again, traffic fines and road accidents can cost you so much more! EMERALD COLLECTION TO OPEN RESORT

in the maldives

T

he Emerald Collection consists of two luxury resorts in Zanzibar; the five-star luxury Hideaway of Nungwi Resort & Spa (Leading Hotels of the World) on the popular Nungwi beach, and the five-star Dream of Zanzibar Resort located on the beautiful Pwani Mchangani beach. Both resorts have been built to satisfy those guests seeking an authentic holiday experience, reflected in the architecture and

decor that evoke the island’s Arabic and African heritage. In October 2018, the group will open a new resort in the Maldives. The Emerald Maldives Resort & Spa will be a five-star deluxe 120 villa resort, with 60 over-water and 60 beach villas. The resort – which will be a member of the Leading Hotels of the World – is nestled in the Island of Fasmendoo in the Raa Atoll, northwest of the Maldives.

For more information about the Emerald Collection please visit www.emerald-collection.com Or contact George Kiruku Email: george@emerald-collection.com Tel: +255 (0)745 897629
