WORLD CUP

eality TV doesn’t get much better than the World Cup. The actors are real, the matches are genuine and the scores give us much to talk about for years on end. The World Cup has seen lesser-known countries gain the respect of the world, etching their way into history books; such great names as Pele, Zidane, Maradona and Cruyff. The month-long event has brought much glory to nations, just as it has brought players and fans to tears. Beyond club-level leagues, championships and friendly matches, the World Cup offers us a chance to see our favourite football players represent their countries in the global arena. This is not an event to be missed. At one point in your life, someone will ask you whether you were there when Diego Maradona gave us the famous Hand of God goal, or if indeed Senegal once beat France, knocking them out of the first round of the games. But thanks to technology and all the ways we capture and share special moments, we don’t have to confirm that Luis Suarez has got into trouble a number of times for biting fellow players on the field! At Village Market, the World Cup isn’t just about football. It’s about bringing people from around the world together, celebrating their wins and commiserating with them in their losses. It’s about making new friends, learning new ways to celebrate, experiencing new cultures and creating one big family out of all the many small ones that have made the shopping complex their second home. What better place to experience all these moments than at the heart of Nairobi’s diplomatic district? With 61 HD TV screens, more than 40 international food outlets, an open-air food court and ample parking, Village Market is the perfect spot to catch every minute of the World Cup. We are ready for you!

CELEBRATING KENYAN DADS 17th – 31st May

Village Market was the host of a photography exhibition titled #KenyanDads. The showcase was inspired by #SwedishDads – a photo exhibition about gender-aware modern men that has its roots in Sweden. In similar fashion, the #KenyanDads exhibition demonstrated the important role of fatherhood using 28 of the best photographs submitted by Kenyan families to the Swedish embassy. The exhibition took place at the Food Court from 17th to 31st May and gave a rare glimpse into the lives of Kenyan fathers and their joys, struggles and views on fatherhood. Some decades ago, the number of dads around the world using their paternal leave was very low. This changed in 1974 when Sweden became the first country to introduce paternal leave. What followed was a dramatic change in the attitude towards parenting among fathers, which has led to an increase in the amount of leave they take with their children. Today, if you travel to almost any Swedish city, you will see hordes of proud fathers pushing prams and playing with their children. However, when Swedish photographer Johan Bävman became a father, he found that there was a lack of role models that men could relate to as parents. This led him to put together a photo book titled Swedish Dads, which portrays men on parental leave with their children. The book in turn led to the #SwedishDads photo exhibition, based on portraits of some of the few fathers who have chosen to stay at home with their children for at least six months. The #SwedishDads photo project has had a tremendous impact and has since spread across the globe.

INTERNATIONAL SCHOOLS FAIR 27th – 29th April

Village Market hosted the International Schools Fair in April at the Lower Food Court area. The three-day event brought together major international schools in the country, as well as several suppliers and industry players. The popular exhibition gives parents and service providers a chance to engage with the administrations of various international schools in Kenya. ISF is held twice a year with this being the third edition of the fair. Given its prime location within Nairobi’s diplomatic district, this is just one of the many events that Village Market has successfully pioneered in its 23 years of operations. To take part in the next International Schools Fair to be held later this year, contact: damar@villagemarket-kenya.com

Village SCENE MOTHER’S DAY 13th May

Mother’s Day is for many people the one day in the year when they can show their appreciation towards mothers and mother figures. The day is marked across the world by giving cards and flowers to mums or enjoying a wonderful meal with them. This year, Village Market treated mums visiting the mall to a special concert at the Food Court and Courtyard. Ricky Na Marafiki and Mackinlay & the Band played a series of hits to the delight of many families marking Mother’s Day. New tenant, Ignite Fitness, got things rolling with an afro-beat fitness workout session reserved for mothers and their daughters. Health services provider, AAR, also offered free nutrition and dentistry consultation. With lots of Mother’s Day discounts and offers across Village Market, shoppers were able to pick up some special gifts for their mum all week!

GAME NIGHT 21st April

Once again, families and friends flocked the Village Market Food Court for an evening full of board games, fun and food. Game Night is an event organised by Village Market management. The event takes place once every two months and brings together people of all ages. For the kids, game night is enjoyable, builds good sportsmanship and challenges their wit as they engage in tournaments of chess, Connect Four and Jenga. The older crowd tends to enjoy Monopoly, Scrabble and Backgammon. Terrian Chess Academy has been hosting chess competitions during Game Night. These games draw a large pool of young and old participants and spectators. Terrian Chess Academy is one of the few FIDE (World Chess Federation) endorsed academies in the world whose mission is to identify and nurture talent. The academy trains children from as young as five years on how to approach life holistically using the game of chess, which has been proven to be an effective educational tool. Game Night allows friends and families to relate in a conducive environment on a regular basis, creating an emotional bank of good memories and positive vibes.

Village VILLAGE MARKET CELEBRATES WORLD ENVIRONMENT DAY

W

orld Environment Day (WED) is marked every 5th June as an international day set aside by the United Nations to raise awareness on the challenges facing the environment. This year the theme Beat Plastic Pollution calls on everyone to take the threat of plastic more seriously by refusing the kind you cannot reuse. Worldwide, the retail sector is largely responsible for the distribution of everyday single use lightweight plastic bags, bottles and packaging material that end up as plastic waste. Plastic bags can take up to 1,000 years to decompose, while plastic bottles take more than 450 years. This means that the very first manufactured plastic bags have not fully decomposed yet! Once a plastic bag is disposed off, it photo-degrades (as opposed to bio-degrading), releasing harmful particles into our air, water and land ecosystem. The challenge with plastic production is that an estimated 12.7 million tonnes of it has found its way to the oceans, with more than 5.25 trillion particles floating at sea as a result of irresponsible use and littering. If this trend continues, we run the risk of having more plastic than fish by the year 2050. In addition, aquatic and land animals are ingesting plastic bags, which is causing fatalities and untold loss. The United Nations notes that the marine

12

PLASTIC: A huge problem for marine life

environment is an important source of livelihoods, food security and economic development in 38 African coastal and island countries. Africa’s growing middle class is creating large consumer markets for plastic goods and those packaged in plastic with supermarkets now replacing informal shops and markets.

RAISING AWARENESS Every year, Village Market marks WED by engaging various stakeholders including government agencies, corporations, community organisations, shoppers and individuals in actions aimed at awareness and environmental conservation. Village Market has previously collaborated with environmentally conscious organisations such as Friends of Karura Forest to plant 10,000 indigenous trees in the neighbouring forest. This indigenisation project was carried out in 2016. In 2017, following the Kenyan government’s nation-wide ban on single use plastic bags, Village Market made a first-of-its-kind commitment to be plastic bag free one month early by launching a pro-environment campaign named Jeans In, Bags Out. The campaign offered shoppers an alternative long-term solution to plastic carrier bags. #JIBO encouraged shoppers to bring in their old jeans and have them repurposed into durable shopping bags for free by engaging a group of tailors from Kibera who transformed the jeans on-site into fashionable multi-use bags.

This year, Village Market joins the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), Office of the President (Youth Affairs Division), the local leadership in Kibera, Seven Kids School Kibera, the Kibera community and other stakeholders in a World Environment Day awareness campaign. The initiative includes clean-up activities, anti-littering efforts, environmental education and tree planting in Nairobi Dam. Village Market donated 5,000 tree seedlings towards the rehabilitation of the Nairobi Dam eco-system that had been turned into a dumpsite. The menace and environmental challenge posed by plastic cannot be ignored any further. Waste plastic is unsightly more so when it accumulates in drainage systems during rainy seasons. Individual responsibility and actions become huge collective solutions, as articulated by Professor Wangari Maathai in the hummingbird’s philosophy of doing the best that you can. As responsible citizens and consumers, everyday should be World Environment Day – a time to pause and reflect on the principles of sustainability and environmental responsibility. Avoiding littering, re-using water bottles, refusing plastic straws and single-use plastic bags are just a few simple actions, and when practised daily, will collectively minimise our use and disposal of plastic. Here is a motto to remember: if you cannot re-use it, refuse it. Let’s beat plastic pollution together!

Village Market Foundation continues to play a key role in various benevolent activities throughout the year. Should you wish to make a difference through any of our initiatives, please contact us: Email: pr@villagemarket-kenya.com Call: 020 7122 488/90

Kingsway TYRES

THE RIGHT BATTERY

for your car I

magine for a moment that your mobile phone didn’t have a battery. It wouldn’t work, would it? Just like your phone needs a battery to work, so does your car. The battery in vehicles has several functions. First, it operates the starter motor to provide current for the ignition system when cranking the engine. Secondly, when the car’s engine is off, the battery is able to operate the car’s lights and other electrical functions of your vehicle. Thirdly, the battery acts as a supplement charging system to the alternator.

WHEN YOUR CAR BATTERY RUNS FLAT

BATTERY: Is yours regularly checked?

Various parts of your vehicle tend to wear off over time. Your car’s battery is no exception. To ensure your battery serves you for a long period of time, certain things have to be in check: • The charging system of the vehicle must be kept at an optimum (13.8v to 14.5v). • Ensure the terminal clamps are not covered in deposits since this prevents

circuit completion. Should you notice a build-up of rust on your terminals, pour some hot water over the terminals and apply petroleum jelly. • Only fit the recommended battery size for your vehicle. Overall, the life of a car battery depends on several parameters: correct battery application, battery size in relation to the vehicle, mileage covered and optimum alternator operation. However, if you experience several hard-starts every morning as you prepare to leave for work, that’s a cue for you to get a new battery.

WHAT IS THE RIGHT BATTERY FOR YOUR CAR? The right battery for your car is determined by its engine capacity, your car load and the alternator. The bigger the engine capacity of the battery, the larger the electric current it requires. Here’s a guide you can use when buying a new battery for your car: • Below 1200cc: NS40 battery of 32Ah. • 1300-1500cc: N60 battery of 40Ah. • 1500-1800cc: NS70 battery of 65Ah. • Diesel vehicles 2200cc: N70 battery of 70Ah. • Lorries: 100Ah and above. If in doubt, visit any of our service centres. Our experts will test your battery and help you determine the rating at which your battery is operating. We can also service your battery and fit a new one should the one you have not be working properly.

Indulging your sweet tooth just got easier thanks to Sweet Street – the latest outlet to open at Village Market By Wambui Kamau-Ong’weny

A

ll children and grownups that love sweet treats are bound to leap with joy at the sight of a window display filled with candy and confectionery. The directors of Sweet Street, Tushar Nainani and Yogini Nainani, know this all too well. The unique concept behind their new store offers Village Market shoppers an experience like no other. The outlet will soon indulge sweet lovers with a variety of chocolates, candies, snacks, savouries and beverages.

International brands

SWEET STREET Tel: 0702 899 899 / 0782 899 899 Email: info@sweetstreet.co.ke Facebook/Twitter/Instagram: @sweetstreetke Website: www.sweetstreet.co.ke

“The most rewarding part about owning a sweet shop, other than travelling the world in search of the latest products, is trying out all the sweets,” Tushar and Yogini confess. All things considered, who can resist the taste of a Hershey’s or Reese’s bar? Alongside these international confectionery brands that will be available at Sweet Street, one can also find Ferrero, Lindt, Patchi and Godiva chocolates. For that grab-and-go refreshment, sample some Snapple, Starbucks bottled coffee and a variety of energy drinks.

Healthy options

Sweets have certainly gotten a bad rap over the years. The norm is to turn down anything that contains sugar. However, Sweet Street will also offer healthy candy for diabetics and those seeking reduced sugar options. According to Tushar and Yogini, “Sweet Street will serve up a dash of nostalgia, the kind that the kids of the eighties and nineties have been yearning for. It’s a reminder of the past, within a futuristic store.”

Gift packs and event packages For those looking to add an extra-special touch to an event, Sweet Street will make personalised gifts for friends, family and loved ones. They will also have packages for birthdays, weddings and corporate events. We can’t wait for this store to open in July!

Village DENTAL CLINIC

A HOLISTIC APPROACH

to dentistry V

illage Dental Clinic was among the first tenants at Village Market. The clinic was launched in 1995, the same year that the complex opened. Village Dental Clinic provides a full range of dental services, encompassing different fields of dentistry in a holistic way. The clinic’s services include: • Orthodontic treatment and invisible braces • Dental implants • General and preventive dentistry • Advanced cosmetic dentistry and smile design • Facial aesthetics (Botox, dermal fillers and mesotherapy) For nervous patients, the clinic uses nitrous oxide gas, also known as laughing or happy gas. Village Dental Clinic has a multidisciplinary team of three full-time dentists and two part-time consultants (an orthodontist and implantologist/periodontist). Dr Kassiri (DDM, FADI) has more than 35 and Dr Essajee (BDS, MSc) about 25 years of experience in the field. Dr Shreena Shah (BDS, MJFD) joined the practice in 2011 after practicing special needs dentistry in the UK for four

30

years. Coming from London is Dr Shiraz Gulamali (BDS, LDS, RCS, MSc), who was been practicing in London for more than 30 years of experience as a specialist periodontist/implantologist. Dr Lyanda Musima, an orthodontist, is also part of the clinic’s team with more than 15 years of experience. Village Dental Clinic adopts the best international practices. The clinic works with a network of international labs and experts. Their mission is provide the best dental care with a view to achieving uncompromising excellence and delivering value to their clients. The practice sees bookings by appointments as well as walk-in clients. Patients who walk in with a dental emergency and are in pain are attended to and treatment is provided to alleviate the pain. “Our clients are a gift that we treasure. There is no higher achievement and calling than to serve the community. A happy smile is our reward.”

TRENDS IN DENTISTRY Dentistry is undergoing a digital revolution. 3D X-rays, impressions and printing are changing the way traditional dentistry

PRACTICES: The best on an international level

has been practiced. The adoption and utilisation of these technologies allows us to offer invisible braces, smile simulations and implant surgery planning in a quick and efficient manner. Minimally invasive dentistry emphasises the preservation of sound tooth structure. This, combined with the use of modern adhesive dental materials, results in increased longevity for natural teeth. Regenerative medicine is the branch of medicine that develops methods to regrow, repair or replace damaged or diseased cells, organs or tissues. Regenerative medicine includes the generation and use of therapeutic stem cells, tissue engineering and the production of artificial organs. As the pioneers in Kenya of the application of this principle to dentistry, we generate and use Plasma rich in growth factors (PRGF, PRP), derived from the patient’s own blood, to aid in healing wounds and regenerating tissue and bone in the jaws.

DENTAL TIPS FROM VILLAGE DENTAL CLINIC: • Floss everyday • Get routine check-ups and cleaning • Always seek early intervention for tooth problems
