Over 45 International DINING OPTIONS B

ack in 2012, when you came to Village Market for a quick bite you were limited to eating at the 19 food outlets that existed at the time. That number has since grown to more than 45 restaurants, each serving a broad range of international cuisines. In just five years, the food offering at Village Market has come to include a food court, food market, courtyard, restaurants, a food pop-up shop, a live food-demo kitchen and food lounges. Shoppers and visitors alike are spoilt for choice, not just on what to eat but where to enjoy their favourite meals. Whether you are after a fine-dining experience, a c-suite business lunch or a quick barstool sandwich, there’s something for everyone. Breakfast, dinner, lunch, snacks, cheats and treats are all catered for at Village Market. But it’s not all just about the good food; it’s the cultural experience that comes with it. For instance, Casa Jamon will take you to Ronda City in Spain, as you sample their delightful ham. Taco will ride you off to Tijuana in Mexico as you savour their tacos and wash them down with margaritas. East will place you right in the streets of Seoul, your meal of boneless kalbi served in the same paper boxes you would find in Korea or Japan. And when you’re back, Nyama Mama will be ready to welcome you with a Kenyan experience of nyama choma served with flavoursome sides. Wash it all down with Mama’s signature cocktails served in iconic metal vikombe. Village Market does it again for the retail experience in Nairobi, with 45-plus restaurants and counting. Shopping and dining never looked so good!

KSHMR BY KUONI The idea to create our brand and open a shop came from the fact that when living in Africa, it can get pretty cold in the evenings and you almost always have to carry something with you to stay warm. Crazy about fashion, style and quality, we decided to specialise in cashmere garments. Cashmere comes from the soft undercoat of cashmere goats that are bred to produce this type of wool. It takes more than two goats to make a single two-ply sweater. The fibres of the warming undercoat must be separated from a coarser protective topcoat during the spring moulting season, a labour-intensive process that typically involves combing and sorting the hair by hand. These factors contribute to the relatively low global production rate of cashmere – approximately 6,500 metric tons of pure cashmere annually, as opposed to two million metric tons of sheep’s wool. KSHMR by Kuoni was created in March 2016 and finally opened its store on 30th November 2017 in the new wing of Village Market. We have sourced high-end manufacturers of cashmere who produce a wide variety of knitwear for women, men and infants, as well as a selection of accessories for clients and their homes. We are proud to say that we only use the best quality yarns produced by the likes of Todd & Duncan Scotland – the world’s leading cashmere yarn spinners with 150 years of heritage. Their brand stands for supreme quality, exceptional

customer service and innovation. Our other suppliers include Filatura di Trivera, an Italian yarn-spinner founded in 1932. KSHMR by Kuoni, with its elegant and modern designs, wishes to introduce the Kenyan clientele to a special shopping experience, offering great and unique quality products. We value our clients very highly and place a lot of emphasis on high standards of customer care and attention to detail. In our women and men’s knitwear sections you will find our top selection of sweaters, cardigans and turtlenecks, warm and light for total comfort. For newborns we offer the softest baby covets, a popular baby shower gift. We have also designed a selection of colourful cashmere accessories to mix and match with your favourite sweaters. Also available in cashmere are blankets, pillows, traveller sets and other cashmere decor to help you relax at home. KSHMR by Kuoni is proud to propose to its clientele a made-tomeasure service. We will meet you by appointment, take your measurements and have you choose your favourite colours.

Lover’s HAVEN

VILLAGE MARKET DELIVERS AN UNMATCHED INTERNATIONAL FOOD EXPERIENCE ALL IN ONE PLACE

F

or more than two decades, Village Market has led the retail sector in Kenya to offer an unrivalled experience for its culturally diverse shoppers, neighbours and visitors. The shopping complex has won the hearts of Nairobians and tourists alike, not just for the hundreds of outlets featuring international apparel brands but also for its unique entertainment options and events, as well as its award-winning architectural design. Added to this admirable list is the mall’s food offering, which started out simply with a charming open-air Food Court and no more than a handful of restaurants. However, with the expansion of the complex, Village Market now has more than 50 international food outlets serving meals from the Mediterranean, the Far and Middle East, South and North America, Europe and Africa. In addition to the Food Court, the complex is now home to the Courtyard, Food Market, Food Pop-up Store and the Live Demo Kitchen. Village Beat spoke to Village Market’s Food Market Coordinator Saloni Rajani about this enormous food lover’s paradise.

14

DEMO KITCHEN: A unique concept

Events are a major part of the Food Market experience. Recent events have included cheese tasting at Brown’s Cheese, wine tasting hosted by The Cellar and a cocktail mixing exhibition by The Nest. Such events are aimed at allowing the public to try out new foods and trends, as well as expand their palettes by learning about things such as wine and cheese pairings or cocktail mixing.

What are the plans for future events at the Demo Kitchen? What was the concept behind the Food Market? The Food Market and the Courtyard were envisioned as an extension of the existing Village Market to offer an additional variety and choice to our customers. It started out as an idea by our Managing Director Hamed Ehsani, and is now the home of Nairobi’s most unique shopping and eating experience. The Food Market is aimed at bringing unique products to shoppers who have an interest in the fusion of food cultures from around the world. It’s not just a place for the expatriate and tourist shoppers, but for all Kenyans to share and experience different cultures in a cosy atmosphere that promotes social interaction.

What makes the Food Market different from the previously existing Food Court? The only difference between the Food Market and the existing Food Court is that the Food Market is geared towards providing shoppers with a wide range of ingredients that they can acquire to cook their own meals at home. On the other hand, the Food Court remains to serve those looking to find great ready cooked meals to eat out or to be delivered to them at home. The Food Market also offers a variety of items for gifting. There are outlets offering spices, chocolate and wine, which are all wonderful for those who want to buy gifts to take back home to loved ones.

Some of the ideas we have planned for the Demo Kitchen include cook-off competitions featuring professional chefs from the various food outlets at Village Market, as well as the Tribe and Trademark hotels. We also have a My Turn to Cook event aimed at men who want to improve their cooking skills in this modern age where more men are abandoning the stereotype that only women cook. "Grandmother’s Secret Recipe" event is another public demonstration that will give grandmothers the opportunity to share their secret family recipes for different meals. Everyone can learn how to make excellent Swahili or Indian meals for example, from authentic traditional recipes.

The Pop-up Store also stands out as a new concept. What is it about? The Pop-up Store is another concept that is unique to Village Market. It offers small businesses and local industries a shortterm rental space within the Food Market to showcase their products and introduce them directly to shoppers. This is our way of promoting local products from small business owners. It adds great variety to the goods that will be available at the Food Market, and many of them will be new products that are only available exclusively at the Village Market. The shop has been most recently occupied by a homemade store that serves fresh and delicious soups, a great option for a healthy lunch.

What are some of the unique aspects of the Food Market?

How would you summarise the food experience at Village Market to new visitors and shoppers?

The Demo Kitchen is a unique concept, the first of its kind in Nairobi. It is a set-up consisting of a fully fitted kitchen where visitors can learn how to cook various meals, as demonstrated by chefs and other food experts. Exhibitors can hire the space to showcase their products, share recipes and also interact with the shoppers. We have created a monthly calendar of events that will include regular demonstrations at the Demo Kitchen. These events will be free to the public and use accessible ingredients that the customers can easily shop for and go on to try at home for themselves.

The goal of the whole Food Market and Courtyard experience is to encourage experimentation and create a link to new experiences. It is simply an extension of the existing Village Market Food Court, where quality and great customer service is the priority. Along with this, we foster an interactive environment that is geared towards cultural exchange amongst everyone that visits. The experience will be to taste, smell and watch the cooking and exhibitions, as well as an opportunity to ask questions, share ideas and participate in the entertaining and educational activities.

MUGG & BEAN In the early 1990s, Ben Filmalter and his wife Judy discovered a little coffee shop on the southern side of Chicago. It was unique as it prided itself on its spirit of generosity. With this in mind, Ben went home and opened the first Mugg & Bean in 1996 at the V&A Waterfront in Cape Town. From the beginning, Mugg & Bean has prided itself on generous portions and was amongst the first restaurants in South Africa to serve bottomless coffee. But Ben wanted more than just a restaurant, he wanted a place where people arrived as customers and left as friends. In less than seven years, Mugg & Bean had grown to over 80 restaurants nationwide. Today you can find the brand in 220 locations across Africa.
