T
FEEL GREAT!
he history of makeup is 7,000 years old, evidence of which has be found in ancient Egypt and Greece. Back then, cosmetic body art utilised such items as red ochre, kohl and sycamore juice. Cosmetics are also mentioned in the Bible, related to women such as Jezebel and Esther. The conclusion is that human beings have always made an effort to enhance their appearance, for either special occasions or simply everyday life. Just like the fashion industry, the makeup and cosmetic industry is worth billions of dollars. The rudimentary products that nature provided in ancient times have now been replaced by more sophisticated products designed for both men and women, and just like apparel, makeup trends keep changing to serve the needs of specific groups, communities and generations. Gone are the days when the act of powdering one’s nose was done in private. Thanks to technology, the Internet is now awash with home videos of makeup tutorials. In these clips, novices and experts alike pay homage to the art of self beautification. By showing off their latest skills, they share various beauty tips while attempting to convert non-believers into confident makeup wearers. This issue of Village Beat celebrates the health and beauty outlets at Village Market, as well as the cosmetic brands that keep us looking good and feeling great!

M.P. SHAH HOSPITAL’S CAMPAIGN TO RAISE CANCER AWARENESS
M
.P. Shah Hospital organised a cancer awareness drive at Village Market to sensitise the public to the importance of early cancer
detection and embracing healthy lifestyles to prevent cancer. The campaign took place in the month of October, coinciding with Breast Cancer Awareness Month as promoted by the World Health Organisation (WHO), to increase attention and support for awareness, early detection and treatment of breast cancer. Throughout the campaign period, employees of the hospital wore pink ribbons, an awareness symbol of breast cancer. The hospital also pitched a tent at the Village Market courtyard where shoppers engaged with cancer awareness materials and educational content. Hospital staff also urged members of the public to undergo early breast cancer screening tests. Alongside these activities, the hospital carried out mammography, breast ultrasound and Pap smear tests at its newly opened Village Medical Centre, which is located on the second floor at the new wing. According to the African Cancer Organisation, breast cancer is the most frequently diagnosed cancer among women globally, with more than two million being diagnosed with the disease annually. For more health information and medical check-ups, visit M.P. Shah’s Village Medical Centre today.

NOBRI HOME What is Nobri Home? Nobri Home is a family-owned home goods specialty retail store that stocks a wide range of home furnishings imported from the USA. We opened our retail store at Village Market in April 2018 and have been excited to share our passion for all things home with customers here at Village Market. We fill our store with a continuously changing selection of high quality and stylish household goods for every type of customer. We carry over 1,300 unique items across a broad range of product categories such as kitchen and dining, bed and bath, furniture, home textiles, rugs, decor and outdoor. Whether you are looking to tastefully update your current home decor or furnish a brand new house, we give our customers some great options for creating their dream home.
What does Nobri mean? The name ‘Nobri’ is actually an inside joke within our family – a play on family names. It was coined in the early 90s and the name just stuck.
Why did you choose to focus on furniture and home furnishings? We operate on two basic ideals: first, your home decor, like the clothes you wear, is an expression of who you are. Secondly, your home should be a place where you feel at peace and are able to relax, while hiding from the hectic world outside. Our passion

lies in giving Nobri shoppers’ superior quality products that allows them to find their own voice while creating their sanctuaries.
How do you keep your company true to its vision? We listen to customer feedback and bear the feedback in mind when choosing the product lines. This has worked well to keep our customers returning. We spend a lot of time researching high quality products and manufacturers who have a specific focus on quality and are keeping up with current trends in home decor.
Any changes you have made/experienced over time? We are a continuously evolving company and with every customer interaction we learn a little more about what is in demand and how to keep our customer base happy.
What kind of experience should the Nobri Home shopper expect from your Village Market outlet? We would like for Nobri Home to be your favourite home goods store and your first choice when shopping for your home. We strive to offer a personalised approach to your home shopping experience. Our in-store team is focused on understanding each customer’s needs and style preferences, and is able to recommend products that fit each client’s lifestyle.
What lies ahead for Nobri Home in the near future? We have recently launched our wedding registry service and are inviting all couples that are currently planning their weddings to come and take advantage of this service. It’s a great way to get your new home started! In 2019 we will be looking to expand our offering in some of our categories. We will have a wider variety of styles and colours particularly for home décor. We will also be looking to grow our outdoor category, as this is an area we believe is still greatly underserved in the market.

POLISHED: Makeovers can give confidence
any women (and men too) will swear that they wouldn’t be caught dead without makeup on. Wearing makeup seems to be the new norm – maybe even the new natural? From the basic to extreme, human beings have always enjoyed the art of self-enhancement. This art dates back 7,000 years to ancient Greece and Egypt. Various health and beauty treatments not only hide or completely take away the years from the body, but also give us a sense of confidence to brave the world as it turns and spins, bringing us new joys and challenges.
There isn’t any part of the body that cannot be enhanced now. Beautification, once done in the confines of one’s home using rudimentary products and items, has crossed over to the medical field. Slight adjustments and extreme makeovers now come with a prescription. However, most makeup routines remain a DIY venture practised at home or offered by stylists in beauty parlours. Over the years, the business of beauty has grown into a multi-billion-dollar industry that has produced designer-lines of products, brand names and expert makeup artists and beauticians. We celebrate these achievements and the outlets at Village Market that bring these beauty products and services to our shoppers.

M.P. SHAH HOSPITAL LOOK GREAT WITH A BRILLIANT SMILE By Dr Kaberi Majumder (M.D.S) Specialist Orthodontist at Village Medical Centre, M.P. Shah Hospital At one time the majority of patients who went for orthodontic correction of irregular teeth were children and adolescents. There was a common perception that dental braces were meant for children only. Over the past decade, however, that false perception has faded away and adults are increasingly opting for orthodontic treatment. The evolution of technology has seen the emergence of invisible orthodontics, lingual braces, clear
22
aligners, Invisalign, tooth-coloured braces and tooth-coloured wires that have now come of age. Today patients seek orthodontic treatment not just for the conventional treatment of functional problems, but also to improve their appearance with healthy and beautiful smiles. The procedure is recommended for patients with unsatisfactory facial and dental esthetics such as inability to close their lips, over prominent or recessive chin, everted lips, gummy smile, overclosure of both lips, and dental and facial asymmetry. Research has shown that people with well-aligned teeth and jaws have a higher degree of self-esteem and confidence. But there are also medical reasons why adults can consider brace treatment for

unaligned teeth, medically known as malocclusion. Braces reduce the risk of repairing gum defects which are often expensive, painful and sometimes stressful to the patient. They also reduce the risks of gum and periodontal disease and chipping and breaking of the teeth. Due to long standing pyorrhea disease (deposition of tartar on teeth and gum) or due to ageing process of gums, most adult patients exhibit gum infection and periodontal disease which includes weak gums, gum pockets, gum recession and advanced jaw bone loss which can cause shaky teeth, shifted and flared teeth, tilted molars, extruded teeth and eventually loss of teeth. Adult patients can also suffer from multiple oral function issues involving
biting problems like collapsed bite and chewing trauma, missing teeth, worn-out teeth, jaw muscle fatigue in the morning, pain in the joints while performing daily activities and jaw joint dysfunction. Orthodontic treatment sometimes can substitute other restorative treatment efficiently or work in combination with other dental treatments like dental implants, periodontal treatment of gum, bone defects and restorative treatment for patients with multiple oral issues to enhance their treatment outcomes. Adult patients are considered better candidates for orthodontic treatment because of their meticulousness in appointments and ease to follow orthodontist instructions such as good oral hygiene. Adult patients are
also put under orthodontic treatment for less time because their diagnosis is easier and correction is usually limited. Whereas the conformable nature of human body allows most people to ignore dental problems until they become unbearable, early treatment is key. Recognising the signs is the first step towards correcting the problem.

#vm FOODIE
eating out
WHERE OFFERS VARIETY, AUTHENTICITY AND INNOVATION Is there a Kenyan-themed eating joint or cafe?
Village Market’s food offering continues to make waves in Nairobi’s dining scene. The unlimited options of local and international cuisine are drawing food lovers and families to the shopping complex. Food Market coordinator Saloni Rajani had a quick chat with VB and explained how Village Market has continued to transform Nairobi’s dining scene.
What are the trends seen in Kenya regarding eating out? Eating out is a growing trend in Nairobi; people are increasingly looking for more diversity and better quality, as well as more interesting design experiences.
How is your mall making the experience of eating out unique? Since its inception, Village Market has been a driving force in innovating the dining experience in Nairobi. From the city’s first food court, to the introduction of several firsts that have pushed forward the culinary landscape. With its recent expansion, Village Market has opened Nairobi’s first food market, which features a number of exciting new concepts as well as new eating destinations for the whole family. Nowhere else in Nairobi can one find a more complete offering, from fast casual to fine dining, breakfast to dessert and morning coffee to a nightcap.
26
What can food enthusiasts look forward to when they visit Village Market? A number of new and exciting dining destinations will be part of this dining experience. CJ’s, Mugg & Bean and KFC are established international brands, which will soon have a presence at Village Market. In addition, the Local Grill – a steakhouse, and Off the Rocks – an oyster, gin and champagne outlet, are opening their first outlets soon.
Is it true that customers can experience this food offering not just at the dining table but also in the kitchen? As part of Village Market’s diverse offering, the Demo Kitchen is now a regular feature in the new Food Market. Customers get to witness and try out a number of recipes and cooking methods. Local and international chefs, demonstrating recipes and showing visitors how to prepare quick meals innovatively, host these events.
Most of the concepts at Village Market are homegrown, locally owned and operated experiences. Taste of Africa, Spring Valley Coffee, Tastigo and Nyama Mama are specifically Kenyanthemed restaurants, and the variety of other ethnic cuisines represent Nairobi’s cosmopolitan nature. No other single location in the country offers as much variety and authenticity.
What plans do you have for the festive season, especially December and New Year? Food, shopping and recreation will be central themes for this year’s festive season. Village Market will be the city’s ultimate destination for the whole family to share a meal, shop for gifts and enjoy the holidays together.
What sets you apart from other malls when it comes to dining experiences? Variety, quality and authenticity are hallmarks of the dining experience at Village Market. With over 40 dining options across one kilometer, we have the most comprehensive offering in the country. Whether it’s an intimate first date, a corporate end-of-year party, a family reunion or just a casual catch-up over coffee, Village Market has a dining solution for everyone, from a solo meal to a banquet for 500 people.
Nairobi CHAMBER Chorus
GRACING THE
international stage I
n this special feature, we highlight the Nairobi Chamber Chorus, who recently gave a stunning performance at Village Market. Founded in October 2005 by Ken Wakia, the Nairobi Chamber Chorus (NCC) is one of the leading choral groups in Kenya today. Its mission is to enable young Kenyans to participate in a high-quality musical forum, from which they can build their career or expand their knowledge and interest in the arts. Since its inception, over 150 young people have participated and many are now leading musicians in Kenya, performing and teaching music across the country
and abroad. It is a voluntary group with members drawn from institutions around Nairobi, mostly universities. NCC’s vision is a strong, well-trained musical community that uses music to promote peace and cross-cultural understanding through quality performance of choral music. They are well known for
28
introducing a wide range of new compositions and arrangements to the Kenyan audience as well as collaborating with a variety of choral groups. NCC has travelled extensively in East Africa performing concerts – often for charitable causes – and running music workshops for high school students, university students and church choirs. They have also had a very busy international tour schedule travelling to the UK, USA, Spain and Denmark.
PERFORMING They have performed with worldrenowned musical companies including the Guildhall Orchestra, London Adventist Chorale, Cape Town Opera, UK-based opera houses, Voces8, Soweto String Quartet and Lady Smith Black Mambazo during the Safaricom Classical Music Festival and the Kijani International Music Festival. In May 2012 NCC represented Kenya during Her Majesty The Queen of England’s Diamond Jubilee Pageant at Windsor Castle where, as the Pageant Choir, they shared the stage with world stars including Il Divo, Susan Boyle, the Canadian Tenors, Joss Stone and the Royal Marine Band. In 2016 NCC, in collaboration with the Festival Singers of Florida, led a world peace campaign that saw several choirs perform the African peace song
MEMBERS: Nairobi Chamber Chorus
‘Ukuthula’ on 21 September, the UN established World Peace Day, in an effort that led to the production of the documentary AVoice4Peace (avoice4peace.org). In September 2017 the chorus yet again toured Denmark where they performed in seven cities including Copenhagen. The NCC has landed an extremely prestigious invitation to perform at the American Choral Directors Association’s (ACDA) National Conference in Kansas City in February 2019. NCC’s performance at the ACDA National Conference will be its highest achievement so far, as this is the largest gathering of choral musicians in North America. No Kenyan group has ever performed at the National Conference of ACDA.

FIONA KAY OF MIDNIGHT VOYAGES AND FILLING VOIDS Fashion can be stylish, impressive and also philosophical. Fiona Kay at Village Market brings out aspects of fashion that we often don’t think about.
Who is the ultimate Fiona Kay woman? The Fiona Kay woman is cosmopolitan, sets her own standards and is unique in every way. She is a world traveller and is ecstatic about Africa.
What inspired your current collection? Our current and outgoing collection is titled Midnight Voyage. It was inspired and developed around the excitement of air travel. Our upcoming collection, The Void, addresses feelings of emptiness, uncertainty and the anxiety that comes with losing purpose. In this collection launching in mid-November, Fiona Kay attempts to fill a void and move every woman into a zone of certainty and fulfilment.

This service allows us to handle custom orders so that, in the event that you don’t find a form-fitting size in store, you need not miss out on your favourite Fiona Kay design. We also take on unique custom designs for clients who plan to attend special occasions. Ultimately, we want women to feel unique, unconventional and exhilarated.
