Upbeat Latin music and great food makes this the perfect way to start the weekend. Village Market held its monthly Salsa Night on Friday 30th November at the food court. The event attracted salsa enthusiasts, experienced dancers and novices who were out for a little adventure. The first hour of the event was a salsa class for those looking to learn a step or two. Dance the night away every last Friday of the month at the food court from 6pm. Join us for our next Salsa Night on 28th December.
Village SCENE GAME NIGHT 1st December
Game Nights are all about making great memories and bringing together people that have fun with one another on a regular basis, creating an emotional ‘bank’ of good memories and positive vibes. On Saturday 1st December, friends and family gathered at Village Market for a fun evening of playing board games. Game Night is held every two months and brings together people of all ages on a platform that builds good sportsmanship while nurturing healthy relationships. Some of the games played include Monopoly, Scrabble, Jenga and Backgammon. Uniquely positioned at the food court, gamers can order food and beverages from their favourite outlet. BOARD GAMES: Bringing people together
GIRLFRIENDS CONFIDENTIAL 8th December
The last Girlfriends Confidential talk of the year took place at the Trademark Hotel’s conference centre on the afternoon of 8th December. Featured panelists included Victoria Rubadiri, Adelle Onyango and Maureen Momanyi. The ladies engaged a large audience on the topic of mental health – what it really is and how to identify signs of poor mental health in oneself or our loved ones. The panelists also offered guidelines on how to maintain positive mental health and how to offer help and care to those suffering from various forms of mental illness. Guests got to share their own experiences, opinions and feedback on the topic. It was an enlightening event as mental health continues to affect the world today. After the main session, guests got to have a tête-à-tête with the panelists as they mingled with the crowd. We look forward to hosting more sessions in the coming year.

READING: Developing lifelong skills
ABOUT STORYMOJA
S
torymoja is the 11-year-old publishing arm of No Boundaries Ltd and is an ethical and indigenous publishing house that employs 55 staff from diverse backgrounds. Our vision is to ‘get a book in every hand and mind’ so as to develop the literacy, life skills and foundation for lifelong learning – the basic essentials for our economic and social wellbeing. Our publishing ethos is to emphasise understanding over exam grades and our main point of difference is creative messaging, whereby ‘lessons’ are embedded in the story rather than preached in order to excite children into reading and nurture their natural love of learning.
MAIN FOCUS AREAS
1. Content creation and publishing Our catalogue has over 300 books. Although we do have a few books for adults, we specialise in publications for 4 to 18-year-olds. Our range includes Kiswahili and English activity books,
storybooks and non-fiction readers. We also have new competence-based curriculum textbooks, revision books, career encyclopedias and workbooks, as well as Kiswahili literature set books. Our recording studio is currently converting the physical books into audiobooks and author podcasts, while the digitisation unit is converting the physical books into other formats including e-books for online distribution in the local and international markets though our Storymoja online store www. storymojaafrica.com. Our storybooks educate, entertain and teach life skills. They have also been used as support tools in various projects.
2. Start a Library ‘Start a library’ is a reading promotion initiative that enhances access to storybooks for children and nurtures a culture of reading for pleasure. Only 2% of public primary schools have libraries. How many homes have libraries in Kenya? How do we drive a reading revolution without the textrich environment necessary to facilitate regular reading habits? Our focus is to enhance access to books in schools through the establishment of school libraries with a minimum of 2,000 books, train teachers and students in library management and run exciting reading promotion programmes to enhance and sustain a vibrant reading culture in the schools. To date, we have opened 152 libraries in 13 counties across the country, impacting over 500,000 children and trained over 1,000 teachers on library management. For more information, visit www.startalibrary.org.
3. Storymoja Festival The Storymoja Festival is an annual intellectual and cultural festival, as well as Kenya’s biggest book party, which attracts thousands of children
10
and adults. The festival started out as a Nyama Choma Fiesta with a small gathering of 300 people in 2007 and has since grown to a vibrant gathering of the greatest minds in Kenya and beyond, celebrating ideas and culture. The festival offerings are dynamic and diverse to cater for all age groups. Books are brought to life through poetry, storytelling and lively discussions with local and international artists, music, workshops, film and much more. Check out further details online at storymojafestival.co.ke.
STORYMOJA READING PROMOTION CAMPAIGNS
Storymoja Read Aloud This is Africa’s largest gathering of children reading aloud from the same text at the same time in multiple locations. The event is conducted bi-annually on the last Friday in January and on the Day of the African Child in June every year. It is a 15-minute expressive and interesting reading exercise, where children from different schools across the country read the same text at the same time. In January 2016, we rallied a total of 421,696 students from 1,306 schools across 44 counties to read aloud. The recommended book for read
aloud is ‘Attack of the Shidas,’ a powerful science fiction story that was commissioned by the Kenya Human Rights Commission (KHRC) to teach Kenyan children about ethnic tolerance and act as a tool for promoting peace and patriotism. The book is approved by the Kenya Institute of Curriculum Development and has been translated to Kiswahili and transcribed to Braille to enhance access to marginalised and disadvantaged communities. Our next read aloud will be held on 1st February.
Gifts That Last Campaign This Christmas, Storymoja’s Gifts That Last reading promotion campaign aims to make reading, giving and gifting easy and hustle free. The campaign seeks to promote reading this festive season, while positioning books as important gifts that lasts beyond the Christmas period. Storymoja is encouraging parents to buy their loved one’s gifts that endure long after the
Christmas meal is gone and toys put away. Books are indeed lasting gifts that instil confidence, creativity and most importantly, critical thinking among children. The campaign also encourages people to donate a book that will be given to a children’s home. For every 11 storybooks bought, two books are donated to a children’s home. Storymoja will organise the identification of the children’s home, coordinate delivery, set up of the library and train the children and caretakers in the children’s home to make maximum use of the library facility.

Nairobi CHAMBER Chorus
GRACING THE
international stage I
n this special feature, we highlight the Nairobi Chamber Chorus, who recently gave a stunning performance at Village Market. Founded in October 2005 by Ken Wakia, the Nairobi Chamber Chorus (NCC) is one of the leading choral groups in Kenya today. Its mission is to enable young Kenyans to participate in a high-quality musical forum, from which they can build their career or expand their knowledge and interest in the arts. Since its inception, over 150 young people have participated and many are now leading musicians in Kenya, performing and teaching music across the country
and abroad. It is a voluntary group with members drawn from institutions around Nairobi, mostly universities. NCC’s vision is a strong, well-trained musical community that uses music to promote peace and cross-cultural understanding through quality performance of choral music. They are well known for
20
introducing a wide range of new compositions and arrangements to the Kenyan audience as well as collaborating with a variety of choral groups. NCC has travelled extensively in East Africa performing concerts – often for charitable causes – and running music workshops for high school students, university students and church choirs. They have also had a very busy international tour schedule travelling to the UK, USA, Spain and Denmark.
PERFORMING They have performed with worldrenowned musical companies including the Guildhall Orchestra, London Adventist Chorale, Cape Town Opera, UK-based opera houses, Voces8, Soweto String Quartet and Lady Smith Black Mambazo during the Safaricom Classical Music Festival and the Kijani International Music Festival. In May 2012 NCC represented Kenya during Her Majesty The Queen of England’s Diamond Jubilee Pageant at Windsor Castle where, as the Pageant Choir, they shared the stage with world stars including Il Divo, Susan Boyle, the Canadian Tenors, Joss Stone and the Royal Marine Band. In 2016 NCC, in collaboration with the Festival Singers of Florida, led a world peace campaign that saw several choirs perform the African peace song
MEMBERS: Nairobi Chamber Chorus
‘Ukuthula’ on 21 September, the UN established World Peace Day, in an effort that led to the production of the documentary AVoice4Peace (avoice4peace.org). In September 2017 the chorus yet again toured Denmark where they performed in seven cities including Copenhagen. The NCC has landed an extremely prestigious invitation to perform at the American Choral Directors Association’s (ACDA) National Conference in Kansas City in February 2019. NCC’s performance at the ACDA National Conference will be its highest achievement so far, as this is the largest gathering of choral musicians in North America. No Kenyan group has ever performed at the National Conference of ACDA.

NOBRI HOME What is Nobri Home? Nobri Home is a family-owned home goods specialty retail store that stocks a wide range of home furnishings imported from the USA. We opened our retail store at Village Market in April 2018 and have been excited to share our passion for all things home with customers here at Village Market. We fill our store with a continuously changing selection of high quality and stylish household goods for every type of customer. We carry over 1,300 unique items across a broad range of product categories such as kitchen and dining, bed and bath, furniture, home textiles, rugs, decor and outdoor. Whether you are looking to tastefully update your current home decor or furnish a brand new house, we give our customers some great options for creating their dream home.
What does Nobri mean? The name ‘Nobri’ is actually an inside joke within our family – a play on family names. It was coined in the early 90s and the name just stuck.
Why did you choose to focus on furniture and home furnishings? We operate on two basic ideals: first, your home decor, like the clothes you wear, is an expression of who you are. Secondly, your home should be a place where you feel at peace and are able to relax, while hiding from the hectic world outside. Our passion

lies in giving Nobri shoppers’ superior quality products that allows them to find their own voice while creating their sanctuaries.
How do you keep your company true to its vision? We listen to customer feedback and bear the feedback in mind when choosing the product lines. This has worked well to keep our customers returning. We spend a lot of time researching high quality products and manufacturers who have a specific focus on quality and are keeping up with current trends in home decor.
Any changes you have made/experienced over time? We are a continuously evolving company and with every customer interaction we learn a little more about what is in demand and how to keep our customer base happy.
What kind of experience should the Nobri Home shopper expect from your Village Market outlet? We would like for Nobri Home to be your favourite home goods store and your first choice when shopping for your home. We strive to offer a personalised approach to your home shopping experience. Our in-store team is focused on understanding each customer’s needs and style preferences, and is able to recommend products that fit each client’s lifestyle.
What lies ahead for Nobri Home in the near future? We have recently launched our wedding registry service and are inviting all couples that are currently planning their weddings to come and take advantage of this service. It’s a great way to get your new home started! In 2019 we will be looking to expand our offering in some of our categories. We will have a wider variety of styles and colours particularly for home décor. We will also be looking to grow our outdoor category, as this is an area we believe is still greatly underserved in the market.

LOOK GREAT WITH A BRILLIANT SMILE By Dr Kaberi Majumder (M.D.S) Specialist Orthodontist at Village Medical Centre, M.P. Shah Hospital At one time the majority of patients who went for orthodontic correction of irregular teeth were children and adolescents. There was a common perception that dental braces were meant for children only. Over the past decade, however, that false perception has faded away and adults are increasingly opting for orthodontic treatment. The evolution of technology has seen the emergence of invisible orthodontics, lingual braces, clear aligners, Invisalign, tooth-coloured braces and tooth-coloured wires that have now come of age. Today patients seek orthodontic treatment not just for the conventional treatment of functional problems, but also to improve their appearance with healthy and beautiful smiles. The procedure is recommended for patients with unsatisfactory facial and dental aesthetics such as inability to close their lips, over prominent or recessive chin, everted lips, gummy smile, overclosure of both lips, and dental and facial asymmetry. Research has shown that people with well-aligned teeth and jaws have a higher degree of self-esteem and confidence. But there are also medical reasons why adults can consider brace treatment for unaligned teeth, medically known as malocclusion. Braces reduce the risk of repairing gum defects which are often expensive, painful and sometimes stressful to the patient. They also reduce the risks of gum
32
and periodontal disease and chipping and breaking of the teeth. Due to long standing pyorrhea disease (deposition of tartar on teeth and gum) or due to ageing process of gums, most adult patients exhibit gum infection and periodontal disease which includes weak gums, gum pockets, gum recession and advanced jaw bone loss which can cause shaky teeth, shifted and flared teeth, tilted molars, extruded teeth and eventually loss of teeth. Adult patients can also suffer from multiple oral function issues involving biting problems like collapsed bite and chewing trauma, missing teeth, worn-out teeth, jaw muscle fatigue in the morning, pain in the joints while performing daily activities and jaw joint dysfunction. Orthodontic treatment sometimes can substitute other restorative treatment efficiently or work in combination with other dental treatments like dental implants, periodontal treatment of gum, bone defects and restorative treatment for patients with multiple oral issues to enhance their treatment outcomes. Adult patients are considered better candidates for orthodontic treatment because of their meticulousness in appointments and ease to follow orthodontist instructions such as good oral hygiene. Adult patients are also put under orthodontic treatment for less time because their diagnosis is easier and correction is usually limited. Whereas the conformable nature of human body allows most people to ignore dental problems until they become unbearable, early treatment is key. Recognising the signs is the first step towards correcting the problem.
