LITTLE SHOPPERS Y
ou are hereby forbidden from starting a rumour to the effect that Village Market is creating a mini-mall catering to the needs of small shoppers. While we love our fun-sized fans and friends, we have no plan whatsoever to create a Lilliputian shopping complex, now or in future. This issue of Village Beat is simply dedicated to the young ones and the young at heart. With the entertainment and recreation options at Village Market getting better every day, it’s clear there is much more for children to do at the complex than ever before. But it’s not just recreational stuff, there are fashion brands and dining experiences for you and your kids. From Woolworths to Pizza Hut, LEGO and Keventers, there’s certainly lots of experiences at Village Market that your children will enjoy. In the last issue of the magazine, we announced that someone would walk away with KES 1.2 million worth of Village Market shopping vouchers in the Magical Village festive season promotion. Well, someone did. Check out the full list of winners inside. The year is off to a great start. There’s lots to look forward to at Village Market. From bowling tournaments to new outlets opening, it can only get better. Stick around!

REAL ESTATE EXCELLENCE AWARDS
AWARDS: celebrating key players in real estate
November
Village Market Management received the award for Best In-House Real Estate Management at the Real Estate Excellence Awards held in November last year. Speaking after receiving the award, Village Market’s managing director Hamed Ehsani noted the importance of family values in running enterprises: “To run a successful management team one must embrace and uphold strong family values, an important piece of company culture, which resonates with our staff and clients,” he said. The Real Estate Excellence Awards recognise and celebrate the key players in various realms of the real estate sector who have over the years achieved excellent results and have positively impacted the lives of their clients. Winners are recognised as market leaders who champion innovation and excellence and who stand out from their competitors in service provision and brand positioning.
According to the latest Real Estate Index, in the last five years, the real estate sector in Kenya has been on an exponential growth. This has been the result of the combined efforts by various players and stakeholders in the sector from land agents, housing cooperatives, property developers, property consultants, real estate related suppliers, financial sector players and the government, among others.

Village SCENE A RECREATIONAL FESTIVE SEASON It truly was a magical Christmas at the Village Market as families chose to celebrate the season at the Family Entertainment & Recreation Centre (FERC). The entertainment featured a spectacular line-up of activities that included children’s workshops, physical challenges, live music and instant giveaways that guaranteed fun for families, friends and colleagues alike. At our star facility Village Bowl, groups took part in exciting challenges of kingpin, strike attack and turkey. Adrenaline was high as pro-bowlers and beginners worked for high scores and instant prizes. Under the Sea, Nairobi’s one-of-a-kind indoor kids play area, was jam-packed with children of all ages. They enjoyed magic shows, clowns, balloonists, treasure hunts and a cookie decorating class. To crown it all off was a special visit by Santa Claus with his bag full of goodies. Ozone Trampoline Park featured an array of challenges in a test of speed, strength and agility combining healthy exercises and awesome fun! Contests included ninja warrior, slam dunk and wall climbing. You might have missed out on the festive fun, but the Family Entertainment & Recreation Centre remains open every day of the week. You haven’t seen nothing yet!

FESTIVE FUN: Celebrating the season
Village CONNECTING WITH THE CITY’S KEEPERS
A
t the start of the year, Village Market partnered with the City Council of Nairobi – Westlands sub-county, to offer soft skills training to county staff. The two-day event was designed to provide practical knowledge aimed at building the professional capacity of the sub-county’s workforce, while also bringing the county government’s services closer to Village Market tenants. Forty-five staff drawn from various departments within the sub-county received training in interpersonal skills, communication skills, image as well as personal branding. The event also offered a platform for Village Market staff to learn from the city’s keepers about the demands of public service. Both organisations shared meaningful conversations on how best to sensitize Nairobi’s residents to be better custodians of the city.

For 24 years now, Village Market has embraced responsible business practices by reaching out and touching the lives of its surrounding communities. ince Village Bowl opened at Village Market late last year, there has been a buzz in Nairobi with friends, family and co-workers thronging the facility to challenge one another while having fun. It didn’t take long before these challenges became competitive. In fact, there’s a board at the bowling arena keeping tabs of Nairobi’s top bowling scores. Three months later and there’s now a new trend – bowling leagues. Call us on 020 7122 477 or email us on fun@villagemarket-kenya.com for registration and more details.
JOIN A LEAGUE TODAY That’s right. You can now sign up to any league or form your very own team. Anyone can join a league either for competitive or recreational purposes. You can form a league with your friends, family or colleagues. The idea is to hang out with pro-bowlers, meet new people and learn a new skill and some not-so-common bowling lingo. For instance, what does it even mean to get a turkey? Village Bowl now runs competitive leagues open to anyone above 18 years, and a recreational bowling league open to all ages. In each of the leagues are a minimum of four and a maximum of six bowlers. Registration is now open for up
to 10 teams for the competitive bowling league and 25 teams for the recreational bowling league. There are exciting prizes to be won for the top teams. So what are you waiting for? Form a league, register it and come and show off your crazy bowling skills. And if you’re looking for a league, we can help you join other bowlers looking for someone just like you!

VILLAGE MARKET DELIVERS AN UNMATCHED INTERNATIONAL FOOD EXPERIENCE ALL IN ONE PLACE
F
or more than two decades, Village Market has led the retail sector in Kenya to offer an unrivalled experience for its culturally diverse shoppers, neighbours and visitors. The shopping complex has won the hearts of Nairobians and tourists alike, not just for the hundreds of outlets featuring international apparel brands but also for its unique entertainment options and events, as well as its award-winning architectural design. Added to this admirable list is the mall’s food offering, which started out simply with a charming open-air Food Court and no more than a handful of restaurants. However, with the expansion of the complex, Village Market now has more than 50 international food outlets serving meals from the Mediterranean, the Far and Middle East, South and North America, Europe and Africa. In addition to the Food Court, the complex is now home to the Courtyard, Food Market, Food Pop-up Store and the Live Demo Kitchen. Village Beat spoke to Village Market’s Food Market Coordinator Saloni Rajani about this enormous food lover’s paradise.
28
DEMO KITCHEN: A unique concept
Events are a major part of the Food Market experience. Recent events have included cheese tasting at Brown’s Cheese, wine tasting hosted by The Cellar and a cocktail mixing exhibition by The Nest. Such events are aimed at allowing the public to try out new foods and trends, as well as expand their palettes by learning about things such as wine and cheese pairings or cocktail mixing.
What are the plans for future events at the Demo Kitchen? What was the concept behind the Food Market? The Food Market and the Courtyard were envisioned as an extension of the existing Village Market to offer an additional variety and choice to our customers. It started out as an idea by our Managing Director Hamed Ehsani, and is now the home of Nairobi’s most unique shopping and eating experience. The Food Market is aimed at bringing unique products to shoppers who have an interest in the fusion of food cultures from around the world. It’s not just a place for the expatriate and tourist shoppers, but for all Kenyans to share and experience different cultures in a cosy atmosphere that promotes social interaction.
What makes the Food Market different from the previously existing Food Court? The only difference between the Food Market and the existing Food Court is that the Food Market is geared towards providing shoppers with a wide range of ingredients that they can acquire to cook their own meals at home. On the other hand, the Food Court remains to serve those looking to find great ready cooked meals to eat out or to be delivered to them at home. The Food Market also offers a variety of items for gifting. There are outlets offering spices, chocolate and wine, which are all wonderful for those who want to buy gifts to take back home to loved ones.
Some of the ideas we have planned for the Demo Kitchen include cook-off competitions featuring professional chefs from the various food outlets at Village Market, as well as the Tribe and Trademark hotels. We also have a My Turn to Cook event aimed at men who want to improve their cooking skills in this modern age where more men are abandoning the stereotype that only women cook. "Grandmother’s Secret Recipe" event is another public demonstration that will give grandmothers the opportunity to share their secret family recipes for different meals. Everyone can learn how to make excellent Swahili or Indian meals for example, from authentic traditional recipes.
The Pop-up Store also stands out as a new concept. What is it about? The Pop-up Store is another concept that is unique to Village Market. It offers small businesses and local industries a shortterm rental space within the Food Market to showcase their products and introduce them directly to shoppers. This is our way of promoting local products from small business owners. It adds great variety to the goods that will be available at the Food Market, and many of them will be new products that are only available exclusively at the Village Market. The shop has been most recently occupied by a homemade store that serves fresh and delicious soups, a great option for a healthy lunch.
What are some of the unique aspects of the Food Market?
How would you summarise the food experience at Village Market to new visitors and shoppers?
The Demo Kitchen is a unique concept, the first of its kind in Nairobi. It is a set-up consisting of a fully fitted kitchen where visitors can learn how to cook various meals, as demonstrated by chefs and other food experts. Exhibitors can hire the space to showcase their products, share recipes and also interact with the shoppers. We have created a monthly calendar of events that will include regular demonstrations at the Demo Kitchen. These events will be free to the public and use accessible ingredients that the customers can easily shop for and go on to try at home for themselves.
The goal of the whole Food Market and Courtyard experience is to encourage experimentation and create a link to new experiences. It is simply an extension of the existing Village Market Food Court, where quality and great customer service is the priority. Along with this, we foster an interactive environment that is geared towards cultural exchange amongst everyone that visits. The experience will be to taste, smell and watch the cooking and exhibitions, as well as an opportunity to ask questions, share ideas and participate in the entertaining and educational activities.
