I

for AFRICA!

t is said that Africa is not a place, it is a feeling. And those who have experienced the enchantment of Africa will agree. It doesn’t matter whether or not you were born in the continent of Africa, what matters is whether you have stepped on her soil, gazed at her beautiful features, enjoyed the company of her people and relished her colourful spirit. No matter where you go in Africa, standing on the tiniest square foot possible, you will experience something about Africa worth cherishing. Village Market embraces the African spirit with pride. We have shaped our very identity on the African concept of family and community - the village. This issue of Village Beat celebrates the shoppers, visitors, partners and tenants that live out the African experience everyday through, food, fashion, art and entertainment. We’ve taken the time to direct you to our outlets and tell you about the Afro-centric events that bring a vibrant feel to the mall. This is all in line with Africa Day, which is internationally recognised each year on 25 May. On this day, our shopping complex will be transformed into a kaleidoscope of African culture, featuring food, dance, fashion, art and music. Come celebrate with us, adorned in your most creative expression of African Royalty. Everyone is welcome to join in on the festivities from 10am until late into the night. This time, we do it for Africa!

GIRLFRIENDS CONFIDENTIAL

WOMEN'S EVENT: Exploring challenges in the modern world

March 23

Girlfriends Confidential is an event tailored for women to explore and discuss different topics that touch on their challenges in the modern world. The event is moderated by media personality Victoria Rubadiri. Guest speakers included founder of My Curves Kenya Wendy Waweru and Janet Mbugua, who is a champion for women’s equality. Attendees benefited from the open conversation and networking opportunities the event gave them. Stay tuned for our next edition of Girlfriends’ Confidential.

Village SCENE SALSA NIGHT March 29

Salsa - not the dip made from tomatoes, peppers and onions - the other salsa. The one that involves passion, Cuban music and incredible dance moves. Salsa Night at Village Market was all this and more. The Dance Factory was on site to show us how to get down to the sound of conga drums energetically played by the live band. The ladies brought their dancing shoes and the gents brought their a-game and together they all went to town, busting some serious moves. The result was an explosive night of fun-filled interaction. The night came to a crescendo when everyone gathered on the dancefloor to follow the dance routine as demonstrated by the dance instructors. This was without doubt a very memorable Salsa Night. Get your dancing shoes ready for the next one. Come show us what you’ve got!

GAME NIGHT March 30

Village Market is serious about having fun. That’s why we created Game Night. Game Night is an evening that brings together the young and the young at heart for an array of engaging and exciting board games. If you’d like to try your hand at real estate, you’ll love Monopoly. If you are a words whizz, how about a game of Scrabble? You could also test your strategy and wit with a game of checkers or chess or try out your building skills and nerve with a game of Jenga. Game Night takes place every two months at the Food Court - ideal if you should get hungry and need a quick bite. All are invited.

Village SCENE BOWLING TOURNAMENTS TAKE CENTRE STAGE AT VILLAGE MARKET Since Village Bowl opened at Village Market late last year, there has been a buzz in Nairobi with friends, family and co-workers thronging the facility to challenge one another while having fun. It didn’t take long before these challenges became competitive. In fact, there’s a board at the bowling arena keeping tabs of Nairobi’s top bowling scores. Three months later and there’s now a new trend – bowling leagues.

JOIN A LEAGUE TODAY That’s right. You can now sign up to any league or form your very own team. Anyone can join a league either for competitive or recreational purposes. You can form a league with your friends, family or colleagues. The idea is to hang out with pro-bowlers, meet new people and learn a new skill and some not-so-common bowling lingo. For instance, what does it even mean to get a turkey? Village Bowl now runs competitive leagues open to anyone above 18 years, and a recreational bowling league open to all ages. In each of the leagues are a minimum of four and a maximum of six bowlers. Registration is now open for up to 10 teams for the competitive bowling league and 25 teams for the recreational bowling league. There are exciting prizes to be won for the top teams. So what are you waiting for? Form a league, register it and come and show off your crazy bowling skills. And if you’re looking for a league, we can help you join other bowlers looking for someone just like you! VM BOWLING: Sign up and join a league

Village DRIVER EDUCATION - THE KEY TO SAFER ROADS BY FRANCIS THEURI – CEO, AA OF KENYA

H

ave you ever driven behind someone you were sure has never been to driving school? Such a driver will give all the wrong signals, change direction without warning and make a host of other wrong moves. Driver training (driving schools) started as a business in the United Kingdom in 1960. Being a British colony, the concept quickly spread to Kenya. In 1962, AA of Kenya, then called the East African Automobile Association, started a driving school with only one car – a Ford Anglia. The driving school was under the leadership of M.A.S. Northcote and other ex-British army men who instilled discipline in driver training. AA of Kenya has to date maintained this discipline in its learner-driver, refresher courses and defensive driving training. Driving is serious business. A split-second decision can result in life or death. Driving is a career for many, a source of their livelihood and that of their dependants. What then does one need to look for in identifying a credible driving school?

AA OF KENYA: A road saftey champion in Kenya

10

• To say the least, a driving school should be legally registered offering the requisite number of hours for training. With the new driver training curriculum recently introduced by the National Transport & Safety Authority, it is important that one familiarises themselves with the different classes of driver training and their requirements. • A reputable driving school would only hire highly qualified and skilled driving instructors. It will also ensure that instructors are hands on in transferring skills and knowledge to their pupils. Enrolling your loved one to a school without any proven track record can lead to a disaster. Remember that driving is no simple task and must be learned the best way possible. • One may also want to enquire about the certification and training required for driving instructors. Such documents include an instructor’s license and a driving license. • Before you do business with a company, it is important to carry out research on a driving school. You can ask for referrals or recommendations and even read feedback from past clients.

As a road safety champion in Kenya, AA has, in addition to these basic requirements for driver training, invested in extensive instructor training and certification by the Kenya Technical Trainers’ College. This means that our instructors are qualified and certified teachers able to effectively transfer knowledge to a variety of students. In addition, AA offers the Defensive Driving Course for drivers who have already been behind the wheel but find themselves in need of additional tips to survive a complex driving environment. There are courses that are especially designed for fleet owners and corporates who provide their staff with vehicles. Such courses greatly contribute to attitude and behaviour change. Organisations whose drivers have gone through the programme report low accident rates among their drivers. In situations where an employer needs to ascertain the suitability of a driver before entrusting him with a vehicle, AA carries out tests that further evaluate the competency of an employee. Parastatals, government agencies, non-governmental organisations, individual employers, PSV Saccos and private organisations have taken advantage of this service which seeks to foster road safety within their operations and in the country.

MORE REASONS TO PARTNER WITH AA DRIVING SCHOOLS 1. Motor Cycle Riding Instruction: We are proud to be associated with the campaign to make riding safer by training motorcycle (boda boda) riders across the country. 2. Refresher Driving Course: For drivers who wish to acquaint themselves with specific driving skills. 3. Advanced Driving Course: For practicing (experienced) drivers who want to enhance their practical driving skills. 4. AA Driving Manual: Comprehensive study material for both new learner drivers and experienced drivers. It includes a comprehensive chart of road signs and is recommended for every new student and is a useful reference for all drivers.

african HERITAGE house

a showpiece of

AFRICAN CULTURE

A

rt curator Alan Donovan was inspired by the indigenous buildings he encountered on his many trips across Africa in creating African Heritage House. The house was the first in sub-Saharan Africa to be featured in the prestigious Architectural Digest, in November 1996. The publication described the house, which overlooks Nairobi National Park, as “an architecture rising from the serene Kenyan plain like an outcropping of earth, a vision of usefulness informed by the African genius for decoration. Inside the house, every wall, floor and ceiling, is more proof, in textiles, wood, masonry, pottery, weaponry and art, of the irreducible modernity of African art and crafts.” Apart from housing an art collection spanning 50 years from all over Africa, African Heritage House is a work of art itself. The ‘most photographed house in Africa’ graced the cover of Marie Claire in Paris (April 2000) and has been featured in numerous international magazines. The inspiration for the house is the towering mud mosques of Djenne and Tombouctou in Mali. Donovan had seen these awesome structures and other “lost” mud architectures of Africa when he first crossed the Sahara Desert in 1969. Much of this architecture has been washed away and never replaced. Inspiration is also drawn from the Swahili architecture of Zanzibar and Lamu on the East African coast; from the mud palaces of Morocco and Northern Nigeria; and from the painted houses of Ghana and Burkina Faso.

12

THE HISTORY OF AFRICAN HERITAGE IN KENYA Alan Donovan arrived in Kenya during his first trans-African safari in 1970. After spending several months in Northern Kenya, he held his first exhibition in Nairobi on the art and material culture of the nomadic Turkana people. In attendance was the first foreign minister and second vice president of Kenya, Joseph Murumbi, and his wife Sheila. Murumbi was one of Africa’s greatest private collectors of African art and all forms of African culture. It was Murumbi’s dream to set up a pan-African gallery in Kenya in which artists from all parts of the continent could show and sell their works and which would preserve, protect and promote African culture. Thus African Heritage was formed by the Murumbis and Alan Donovan in 1972. According to a World Bank study, it became the “largest and most organised” showcase and exporter of African art and crafts to the rest of the world for over three decades.

THE MURUMBI LEGACY In 1977, Murumbi sold a large part of his collections to the Kenya National Archives. Thereafter, Donovan set up the Murumbi Trust, which looks after the Murumbi African Heritage legacy. This includes over 12,000 books, many published before 1900; Africa-wide postage stamp collection which is considered next

to the Queen of England’s in importance; over 50,000 documents on Africa; and collections of art, artefacts, sculpture, jewellery and textiles. All these are on display at the National Museums of Kenya, the Kenya National Archives, and the Murumbi Peace Memorial and Sculpture Garden at Nairobi City Park. In honour of the African Heritage House, Village Market will be hosting the extensive African Heritage fashion collection at its new wing during the Africa Day in Living Colour Festival.

frika Handmade opened its flagship store in August 2017. As its brand name suggests, the store stocks handmade items sourced from across the continent. Focusing exclusively on home decor, the store is currently sourcing items from nine African countries including Mali, South Africa, Tanzania and Ghana. These carefully curated items include ceramics, baskets, carpets, bed and table linen. The idea behind Afrika Handmade was born from a desire to see the creativity and abundance of African culture celebrated and recognised. By placing African-made artisanal products on a pedestal, the founders sought to create a special focus on not only the aesthetics of the products, but also on the deep and meaningful stories that surround them. The brand’s mission drives all operations within the store and in the process connects the artisan to the consumer in a seamless, yet powerful way. As the brand looks forward to welcoming products from a tenth country in the continent into the store, its mission remains to be relevant to all its stakeholders.

THE NEW

godown arts centre

a game changer for

KENYA’S CULTURAL SCENE

T

he GoDown Arts Centre is undergoing an exciting evolution that will transform Kenya’s arts and culture sector. The GoDown is a 15-year-old nonprofit arts organisation. Through its diverse programming, it has contributed to the stability, legitimacy, visibility and creative confidence of Kenyan artists and Kenya’s arts and culture scene. Each day, over 300 artists gather at the GoDown to train, create, collaborate and improve their opportunities to earn a livelihood from their talent and creativity. In a single year, there are at least 30,000 visits from schools, Nairobi residents and individuals. Now the GoDown is moving to the next level, which is to scale-up into a new public complex - an open, accessible, contemporary cultural space for Kenyans. The GoDown will be transformed into one of East Africa’s leading arts institutions.

WHY THIS IS IMPORTANT FOR KENYA The new GoDown will be the first major investment in cultural infrastructure since Kenya’s independence. Prior to this, in terms of investment, the Kenya Cultural Centre and National Theatre were both built by the colonial government in 1952. As the nation steps into its sixth decade, it is becoming clear that arts and culture are important in cementing our sense of identity. It is also clear that creativity is an economic driver and Kenya’s creative sector – film, music, dance, literature, visual arts, fashion, and more – has been

growing in vibrancy over the last decade. Last year alone, various Kenyan creatives received international recognition and awards for their work. International press and publications such as the New York Times, Vogue magazine and House and Leisure reported positively on the exciting potential of Kenyan arts. In addition, policy and the legislation environment for arts and culture have been steadily consolidating, with the Kenyan constitution having anchored culture as the foundation of the nation. Slowly but surely, the advocacy efforts by the arts organisations and artists for a facilitative working environment are making a difference.

WHAT THE NEW GODOWN WILL OFFER The new GoDown is a groundbreaking mixed-use development that will deliver enriching and educative experiences for Kenyans and visitors of all kinds. The development comprises a flexible, multipurpose auditorium; three floors of gallery and exhibition spaces; two floors of library and digital resources; recreation areas for children and youths; a mini-city museum, film and media studios; music and dance studios, visual artist studios and workspaces for creative businesses. As a public-facing facility, the new GoDown will also host a food-court, retail outlets and commercial office space. These amenities are all arranged around a series of public courtyards and accessible roof gardens.

MAKING THIS AMBITIOUS VISION SUSTAINABLE For the new GoDown to be sustainable, it must be a homegrown endeavor with a strong sense of local ownership. The project is building a foundation for local philanthropy towards public-good ventures, by inviting various sections of Kenyan society to join in the fundraising. There is a call to ordinary wananchi, with a goal for a baseline of 200,000 Kenyans each giving an average of Kshs 500. There is also a strategy to reach out to the more affluent members of our communities, and to make an appeal to corporations. The GoDown is also inviting partnerships and concessions from local and national government and bi-lateral partners, through their diplomatic corps. Additionally, the GoDown’s international partners and the artistic diaspora are included in the capital campaign strategy. To kick off the fundraising the GoDown board and staff raised USD 1 million. To join in this historic moment, you too can give on Mpesa Paybill: 681471. The account number is your name.

For more information and to share your thoughts and ideas, you may reach us on transformation@ thegodownartscentre.com or call the GoDown on 0726 992200.

AFRICA is shining Y

ou say Africa is rising, we say it has been shining, and it’s not about to lose its spark. From centuries past, Africa’s splendour has continued to glow. And it’s everywhere across the continent. Children are named after a great ancestor, a significant birth trait, a time, season or an event. The designer’s name, Aomo, not only means “a time of harvest” but also refers to the great matriarch Aomo. Her grandmother was tall, strong, entrepreneurial and left a legacy carried by many female grandchildren. The House of Aomo (od AOMO in Luo) was indeed the beginning of it all. odAOMO was established in 2014 by chief designer Dr Sophia Omoro. It’s a luxury line of modern womenswear with a timeless and cross-cultural aesthetic. The company is founded on the principle of “giving back” and supports improved social and economic conditions in Kenya. odAOMO creates exclusive and collectible statement pieces for global citizens, by using sustainably sourced materials to produce handcrafted leather goods, ready-to-wear clothes and jewellery in limited seasonal collections

In 2009 we discovered the art of hand-weaving sisal, a tradition practiced by artisan women in Rwanda. Our signature sisal jewellery is created through this fascinating process and showcases the talent of Rwandan artisans. These pieces have been handmade for the 10 year anniversary of nature resorts O&O and celebrate the women behind this craft.

The brand’s flagship store is located in the historic French Quarter of New Orleans in Louisiana, USA. The second showroom opened in December 2017 at Village Market in Nairobi, Kenya. A truly unique brand, odAOMO produces garments and accessories from eco-friendly materials in Kenya. SANDSTORM

VIVO

Sandstorm makes bags from canvas and leather in Nairobi – but we haven’t always made bags. Our journey began over 20 years ago making luxury safari tents for camps across East Africa, along with safari chairs and custom seat covers and canopies for safari vehicles.

Vivo’s mission is to inspire women and change the way they see themselves through fashion. Our outfits are specifically tailored not only to accommodate, but also to celebrate the many shapes and curves that represent us.

In fact, we produced our first bags as a way to put off-cut tent material to good use. We knew they were popular when we ran out of off-cut and had to buy extra material to make more and as word spread about the quality of what we were doing it got to the point where bags replaced tents at the heart of our business. We still source our materials in Kenya whenever we can. Brass hardware is up-cycled and hand-cast by independent artisans in Nairobi using reclaimed brass sink faucets, bicycles and other parts. Lining fabric and lightweight canvas are woven in Thika. Leather comes from a tannery in Athi River with the highest environmental accreditation. We opened our first standalone retail store at Village Market in Nairobi in 2007. More followed and today we have six locations across the city.

Africa is a great market opportunity and we are looking to source more of our raw materials in Africa. ZINJ DESIGN Zinj – a name used by Herodotus to describe the ancient Swahili coast, from southern Somalia to northern Mozambique – is the inspiration for this unusual little workshop. It is found in the tiny rural village of Takaungu, overlooking the Indian Ocean, where over 70 people are now employed. Together, we make beautiful handbags, sandals, belts, dog collars and small accessories using rustic, natural Kenyan leather embellished with a contemporary take on traditional East African beadwork. Every piece is meticulously beaded and stitched by hand and every piece carries a lifetime guarantee. The ‘Origins’ collection is inspired by ancient Africa, cave dwelling, rock art and the elemental artefacts of ancient times: bone, clay, hide, shells, rock, stone and fire.

ARTCAFFE

TASTE OF AFRICA

Africa is fortunate to have continuous access to a very large variety of locally grown fruits and vegetables. Every country has its unique signature dishes, many based on traditional recipes and freshly grown produce. The Ethiopian staple diet includes injera - a soft, spongy bread made from a locally grown grain called teff. It is usually served with spicy lentils or chicken dishes. Nigeria’s national diet includes many wonderful dishes such as spicy chicken and okra, the famous jollof rice and fried plantain.

Artcaffe is a full serviced bakery, coffee shop, bar and casual dining restaurant. The establishment targets customers of all ages who care about quality, ambience, community and value for money in the products they consume. Artcaffe freshly bakes artisanal bread and pastries, brews real Kenyan coffee, crafts signature cocktails and leads the way in modern casual dining in Kenya. Artcaffe is unique because of its ability to provide consistently fresh, great tasting high-quality food in a relaxed yet modern environment.

Taste of Africa has a sumptuous presentation of fried, grilled, steamed, stewed or mashed Kenyan cuisine, all made nice, fresh and mouth-watering. When tourists and expatriates visit Taste of Africa, the first meal they ask for is nyama choma (charcoal grilled meat) with kachumbari (salsa). Over time, they want the dry-fried tilapia with ugali. Then they move on to charcoal-grilled chicken with roast potatoes and eventually they want the beef stew with chapati or mukimo (a corn and potato mash fried with onions). Looking for a wholesome, sweet bite of Kenya? Dine at Taste of Africa.

Here in Kenya a major part of the staple diet is ugali, which is made of ground maize and usually served with different greens such as sukuma wiki, managu or meat. Different regions of Kenya have their own dishes. To honour the rich tradition of African dishes, Village Market will be introducing a series of African cooking classes. Soon to be announced, these classes will be held at the Demo Kitchen at the Food Market.

ANISE Anise Spices, Nuts & Grains is your usual round the corner market shop with a difference! Anise works directly with individual farmers and merchants who are keen to supply only the highest quality of ingredients that bring out the best taste and health benefits on your table. Anise connects with the world to bring new experiences back home. The shop is the real embodiment of an African shop, with spices, nuts and grains placed in kiondos – African hand-weaved baskets.

............................................................. SPRING VALLEY COFFEE

The kiondo with a long leather or sisal strap was traditionally used by women for storage in homes, to carry items and to give as gifts during dowry negotiations, to place goods for barter trade at the market and to carry the harvest back home. The kiondo is timeless and back with a bang following the ban on polythene carrier bags. There are now many new multi-purpose designs with easy to hold short double straps to suit modern times for use in homes, shops and offices.

Village Market is home to Spring Valley Coffee’s second coffee shop serving espresso-based, manual and cold brew coffees. Spring Valley Coffee beans, which are fairly sourced, are also available to take away in both medium and dark roasts. Free delivery of coffee bags to your home and office is always available. Spring Valley Coffee is proudly brewed at the Tribe and Trademark hotels, as well as many of Village Market’s leading food outlets.
