Much has been said about food and fashion. Some wise words and others – downright funny. Take Isabella Beeton from the 1800s for instance. Something must have driven her to quip wisely and perhaps humorously that: “Fish is held out to be one of the greatest luxuries of the table and not only necessary, but even indispensable at all dinners where there is any pretence of excellence or fashion.” Born some decades before Isabella was Marie-Antoine Careme. She too found the path where fashion and food crossed and found similarities in the two. “I compare a pastry cook who makes good colifichets to a distinguished fashion designer, endowed with perfect taste, who can make charming things with very little material. In the same way, out of almost insignificant scraps of pastry, we have to create pleasing and graceful things that also tempt the appetite.” In this issue we’ve leaned into the wisdom left by Careme and Beeton and made an attempt to tell you how we pair food and fashion at Village Market. We dare say, even to the weight-watchers, we make a good mix. With more than 50 fashion stores and 45-plus food outlets, you’re bound to get that perfect combination here and look good enough to eat!

Village Market hosted the inaugural Africa Day in Living Colour Festival on 25th May. The internationally recognised event was a celebration of Africa, her diverse people and cultures. The festivities at Village Market paid homage to African fashion, food, music, art, crafts and decor. Shoppers and visitors alike adorned their best version of African royalty fashion. Alongside the African food, was a fashion showcase from the globally renowned Africa Heritage House and Mochez Models. Shoppers were also treated to lots of entertainment from local bands living up to the African pride. They also enjoyed selected African movies, art displays and a colourful open-air pop-up designed especially for the discerning Afrocentric visitor.

FATHER’S DAY 16th June
A dad is a son’s first hero and a daughter’s first love. That’s why, this past Father’s Day, Village Market celebrated all dads for the role they play in our lives. Dads were treated to a bonding session with their young ones in a series of activities. The pizza-making event saw dads create mini-pizzas with their little ones. The smiles were contagious and the pizzas delicious! A Daddy & Me Bowl-a-thon took place at Village Bowl. Toy World also provided Lego sets for families who showcased their creativity by building magnificent structures. Versatile Photographers were on hand to capture these happy family moments.

STAFF TEAM BUILDING EVENT June
Village Market staff enjoyed a day out of the office in June at Kereita Forest in Limuru. Staff members took part in adrenaline-packed activities such as paintball and zip lining. In the paintball feat, team mates worked together to outwit their opponents and win the prestigious flag. Zip lining elicited lots of joy and exhilaration for lots of first timers. It was a day to conquer ones fears and bond with colleagues.

634,000 kg of rubbish is dumped in our oceans every second. By the year 2050, there will be more plastic in the ocean than fish. Fish often eat plastic when they mistake it for food. The oceans of the world need us. 8th June is internationally recognised as World Oceans Day. Village Market honoured the day in partnership with Ocean Soles and World Wide Fund for Nature – Kenya (WWF), by running a series of activities at the children’s indoor theme park – Under the Sea. The event inspired children to become better guardians of the world’s oceans. Everyone in attendance learnt the importance of sustainable living with respect to the conservation of marine and coastal environments as recognised in Goal 14 of the Sustainable Development Goals – Life Below Water.

OKSH opened its doors at Village Market in 2005. It is the brain child of Mrs Mehta, who after being diagnosed with cancer, founded MOKSH as a personal sanctuary of recovery where she could explore her inner-self and healing. MOKSH came to define Mrs Mehta’s journey to finding serenity and revealing her hidden talent and spirit in the vibrant world of fashion The store promotes and invests in local talent and resources to assemble bespoke garments for all women. The MOKSH line is customised for all seasons – formal, casual and for a night out. The intricate attire details are put together locally by two ladies of African descent, who assist Mrs Mehta to complete the designs. They work skilfully, using a variety of boldly coloured fabric that is embellished with distinct beads and stonework. MOKSH has extended its services to offer customised pieces made specific to client needs. The design team at MOKSH has recently introduced a range of silver and semi-precious stone necklaces that complement the beautiful MOKSH woman. You are warmly welcomed to the store on the second level of the new wing, for unique and soulful pieces that are carefully designed to celebrate women at all stages of life.

Village EMPOWERING YOUNG PEOPLE TO CARE ABOUT OUR OCEANS
C
an children and youth help generate a new wave of support for sustainable oceans? The answer lies within us. If we don’t teach them to care and support conservation and preservation of nature then who will? The best time to have the sustainability conversation with Kenya’s children is now. They are our future and our actions and decisions will impact them either positively or negatively. On World Oceans Day, 2019 World Wide Fund for Nature Kenya (WWF-Kenya) partnered with Village Market to inspire young people to care and take action to protect our oceans. The young environmental champions had a chance to interact with marine experts from WWF-Kenya at Under the Sea – the ocean-themed indoor play park at Village Market. While at it they engaged in fun, interactive conservation-themed discussions on how the ocean freely gives us food and oxygen, and underpin trillions of dollars in economic activity worldwide.

WORLD OCEAN'S DAY: Teaching children the importance
Children were empowered to easily identify and understand the value of our oceans, appreciate the benefits as well as motivate them to do right and conserve the environment for a sustainable future. While our oceans may look vast and endless, we could lose them if we don’t take care of them. We need to turn the tide on the decline in our coral reefs, mangroves and fisheries and stop plastic pollution. It is disheartening that
eight million tonnes of plastic are leaking into our oceans every year. These conservation values need to be passed on to the next generation. It is for these reasons that Lily Dali – WWF Kenya’s marine expert explained to the young people why they need to use less plastic. She helped the children visualise how plastics choke our environment and leading to a decline in marine and human life. Did you know that it takes about 400 years for the plastic you use once and throw away, to decompose?

Vanishing Wonders Exhibition
3rd – 8th September 2019 Exhibition Hall The Vanishing Wonders Exhibition is a unique curation of art pieces focusing on recycling and other aspects of environmental conservation. The exhibition brings together four conservation artists championing the cause of the Forest Guardian Project that is aimed to assist in the protection of the Naimaina Enkiyio forest in Narok. Each of the four artists works in different mediums and diverse styles, with the main theme of conservation running through their work. Evans Ngure is a recycle artist who assembles distinctive pieces using a variety of collected items, Milena, a wildlife artist and silversmith, uses bold acrylic paintings that partly incorporate pieces of her silverwork.
Niketa works in different mediums such as quilting, as well as oil and acrylic paintings. Usha Harrish completes the picture with the most amazing wildlife photography. The result of their collaboration is an immersing, intriguing and unforgettable art experience. The Naimaina Enkiyio forest, located some 300 km southwest of Nairobi, stretches across 33,000 hectares of land, once the preserve of the Loita and Purko Maasai. According to culturalsurvival.org, the forest is a shrine and an integral botanical, ecological and historical zone of Maasai land. It serves as an important dry season grazing zone as well as a source for medicinal plants. From the Naimaina Enkiyio forest flow numerous rivers and is the home to a wide array of fauna and flora, ranging from elephants to rare bird and plant species. Come and enjoy this exhibition with a conservationist cause. Entry is free.

Crackerjack Cafe first launched its operations in 1989, operating at the Kobil Petrol station along Limuru Road in Gigiri. We started off as a small coffee, sandwich and pastry shop and later added a large salad bar which soon became very popular. With more than 30 years of experience, Crackerjack has earned a reputation for high cuisine standards and excellent service. We recently opened shop at the Food Market where we serve different soups of the day – both vegetarian and non-vegetarian. Also on offer is a choice of sandwiches and an a la carte salad, with veg and non-veg options. Some of the favourites from the salad bar are available daily, while we change others to offer variety. As people are becoming more health conscious, we are responding by offering a healthy and nutritious light lunch. Come and sample a bowl of soup or a piece of freshly baked quiche. Our highly experienced staff is always happy to accommodate different dietary requirements for individual needs. We make bijou platters for offices and small events by pre-order. Sina Shaka Taproom Sina Shaka is the flagship taproom from Kenyan craft beer company Bateleur Brewery. Located at Village Market’s new wing, Sina Shaka is the place where anyone can come and quench their thirst on one of 12 cold and creative craft beers. Our lady brewmaster lets her imagination run wild at our brewery in Mai Mahiu, and what we haven’t already bottled and sold in Kenya’s top retail outlets we sell on tap at Sina Shaka. Bateleur Brewery joined Kenya’s beer revolution just over a year ago. Containing natural ingredients from all over the world and Mayers water – Kenya’s only natural spring water bottled at source – we have been making and selling beers at the country’s main outlets and building a loyal fan base, since we began on this exciting journey.
Our choice of Village Market as the ideal location for our outlet gives our customers a unique venue where they can meet us and drink some of our experimental, un-bottled options on tap. As with all of our beers, the name of our taproom has many meanings to us. Sina Shaka is a nod to our bestselling brew – IPA Bila Shaka. The name can also be shortened to Sin Shak, where you can get up to mischief under our roof of kegs. And we are confident that once our customers visit our new tap room and try our beers, they will have nothing else to say but ‘sina shaka’, meaning I have no doubt this is the best brew. Bateleur Brewery beer drinkers are adventurous and curious to try new things. We know that they are thirsty for fresh, exciting and clean beer. They want to make their own decisions and drink differently. Sina Shaka is fun and fresh. Just past the courtyard in the new wing, you will see Sina Shaka’s teal wall and large bateleur eagle logo. Standing out are the exposed kegs of 10, 20 and 30 litres on the roof, leading down to 12 taps, serving everything from a Double IPA, 9% imperial stout and an IPA made with champagne yeast. Our servers are excited about our beers and if you cannot decide which of our 12 draft beers you want to drink, opt for one of our two tasting light options with four of our ‘old school’ and four of our ‘new school’ options to drink while you enjoy some bitings. illage Market is running an exciting campaign for your young ones called ‘I read everywhere’. We are rewarding our little shoppers for doing one of the most important things – reading! We aim to encourage kids to read as many books as possible to help them to build on their vocabulary and enhance creativity. This campaign is open to children aged 5 to 18 years.
The steps are quite simple: 1. We give a free booklet to be filled in by a student. 2. Every time the student reads a book, their teacher will verify and stamp the booklet. 3. The prizes get better with every book read! To top it all off, the school with the highest number of books read also gets a prize! ometimes doctors are forced to impose certain dietary restrictions on us when the body doesn’t work as it should. In such cases, we tend to quickly take their advice and seriously follow their prescribed regime. After all, it’s usually for a short while after which the medical condition resolves itself. Then we can return to our normal eating habits.
However, certain chronic illnesses present more serious challenges that require a permanent change to one’s diet and lifestyle. In the case of patients who develop diabetes, dietary restrictions are necessary, and yet, not easy to abide by. In my 10-plus years as a medical practitioner, patients have often shared the difficulties they encounter when trying to avoid certain foods in a bid to control their blood sugar levels. Even more frustrating is when they see no change in the levels, even after sticking to a strict diet plan. Why is this case? Let us begin by revisiting our understanding of diabetes. Diabetes is defined as a chronic condition in which the body is unable to produce sufficient insulin for the proper metabolism of glucose. In other cases, the body may produce insulin, but it is not utilised appropriately as the same body keeps resisting it. In Type 1 diabetes for instance, the pancreas is unable to produce insulin, so patients have to depend on insulin from an external source, such as an insulin pump or insulin injections. Ingesting foods containing carbohydrates usually leads to an increase in blood glucose levels, because the metabolism of carbohydrates produces glucose. Naturally, the body requires insulin to allow glucose to enter the body cells removing most of the glucose from the blood stream, while extra amounts are then stored as glycogen and subsequently fat, in the body. If the production of insulin is not sufficient to ensure that this process is successful, a diabetic patient will have uncontrolled blood glucose levels.
That is why patients with diabetes are advised to drop sugar from their diet. In addition, they are asked to keep a watch on their food portions, more so when consuming foods containing starch. They are also to avoid certain fruits that may spike their blood glucose levels. While this may be a good and basic start to managing their condition, a lot is left to the assumption of the patients and their guardians on exactly what not to eat, and what they can eat. Food comes in all varieties offering various nutritional values to the body. Food contains various nutrients that may affect blood glucose and unless explored in totality, may actually hamper the management of diabetes thus causing frustration to the patient, their guardians and even health care providers. In my next article, I will tell you how to look out for hidden sources of carbohydrates in so called ‘super’ foods and how to read and interpret food labels so as to manage your health better.
