UNBOXING IS ALL THE

therapy you need

After cat videos, the next best thing to watch on YouTube is unboxing videos. Unboxing, as Wikipedia will have you know, is the unpacking of products, especially high tech consumer products, where the process is captured on video and uploaded to the Internet. The item is then also explained in detail and can sometimes be demonstrated as well. This is a thing. Lewis George Hilsenteger and his videographer Jack McCann have proved that unboxing is a thing. Their YouTube channel, Unbox Therapy, launched in 2010, has over 15 million subscribers and its videos have received over three billion views. Proving that unboxing is a thing and more so for techies. Over the last few issues of the Village Beat, we have shone a spotlight on the food, fab and fun that is a significant part of Village Market. This issue is dedicated to the geeks, gamers and nerds who are always looking out for the latest gadgets and gizmos. Retail and food therapy aside, try some tech related therapy. We’ve got numerous outlets; well stocked with original merchandise, accessories and appliances – and they don’t put them in fancy boxes for nothing. Take your time to unbox your latest tech gadget and relish the feeling!

Village I READ EVERYWHERE

I

nternational Literacy Day is marked every year on 8 September. It’s a day set aside to celebrate the gains made in improving world literacy rates and to reflect on the challenges of literacy all across the world. Literacy is critical to the development of countries and the advancement of human life. Various stakeholders such as governments, NGOs and businesses have committed to promote universal access to quality education and lifelong learning opportunities through Sustainable Development Goal number four. The goal seeks to ensure that learners achieve literacy and numeracy skills in response to global challenges. In line with the 2019 theme on literacy and multilingualism, Village Market continues to run its exciting campaign for young learners called ‘I Read Everywhere’. The initiative seeks to reward our little shoppers for doing one very important thing – reading! We aim to encourage kids to

read as many books as possible so they can build on their vocabulary and enhance their creativity. This campaign is open to all schools and learners aged 5 to 18 years. The steps are quite simple: 1. We give a free booklet to be filled in by a student. 2. Every time the student reads a book, their teacher will verify and stamp the booklet. 3. Once the booklet is filled, the student will submit it to their school then their school will submit it to us. In return, we will award free passes to our exciting recreational facilities. The prizes get better with every book read! To top it all off, the school with the highest number of books read also gets a prize. A number of learners have already completed their booklets and subsequently been rewarded. We have partnered with various schools in this initiative including German School, Sabis International School, Castle Academy, Foresight Academy and International School of Kenya.

READING: Literacy is critical

We encourage as many schools and learners as possible to participate in the ‘I Read Everywhere’ initiative. Additional reference: https://www.un.org/en/events/literacyday/

JEANS IN

Jeans in BAGS OUT

A SUSTAINABILITY INITIATIVE AGAINST PLASTIC POLLUTION

J

eans remain one of the best inventions in the fashion world. They are functional, beautiful, durable and globally accepted. Yves Saint Laurent once expressed his admiration for this fashion item: "I wish I had invented blue jeans. They have expression, modesty, sex appeal, simplicity – all I hope for in my clothes.” Thanks to the numerous and amazing attributes that jeans come with, they can be repurposed into various items. As a way to mark World Environment Day this year, Village Market brought back the ‘Jeans In Bags Out’ initiative, first launched in 2017 following a government ban on the use of plastic bags in the country. The Jeans In Bags Out campaign encourages shoppers to bring their old jeans to the mall and have them repurposed into durable shopping bags for free. The campaign has run for three years now during July and offers shoppers an alternative long-term solution to plastic bags. The aim of this initiative is to encourage people to upcycle their old jeans for the good of the environment. The amount of wear and tear that the bags can withstand is amazing. They can be washed with other laundry and they are also biodegradable.

ALL-ROUND IMPACT

Village Market works with a group of tailors from Kibera who transform the jeans on site into fashionable multi-use bags. The tailors cut and sew each pair of jeans brought to the mall, and then add a strip of Ankara fabric as the piece de resistance, making the bags both fashionable

12

and functional. This year, the JIBO campaign ran from 18 July to 4 August. Over 800 bags of varying sizes were made during this period. The bags look good on your car seat or slung over the shoulder on a day out. With every pair of jeans converted into a bag, a landfill somewhere is deprived of waste – a win for the environment and a win for the proud bag owner! This is one of many conservation initiatives by Village Market. Our planet is drowning in plastic pollution. According to UN Environment, the same properties that make plastics so useful – their durability and resistance to degradation – also make them nearly impossible for nature to completely break down.

The UN reports that most plastic items never fully disappear; they just get smaller and smaller. Farm animals and fish swallow many of these tiny plastic particles as they mistake them for food, and can thus find their way onto our dinner plates. They have also been found in a majority of the world’s tap water. By clogging sewers and providing breeding grounds for mosquitoes and pests, plastic waste – especially plastic bags – can increase

the transmission of vector-borne diseases like malaria. This shows that plastic has a ripple effect that trickles down to our daily life and our health. UN Environment predicts that if current trends continue, our oceans could contain more plastic than fish by 2050. Keep your old jeans ready and be on the lookout for the next round of the JIBO campaign. If you had your bag made by us, post your swanky new piece of denim on social media and use the hashtag #jeansinbagsout for the world to see!

ELLA ANATOMIC SHOES Ella Anatomic Shoes is a retail outlet dedicated to helping women discover footwear that is not only fashionable but most importantly, designed for their physiological well-being. We spoke to the store's proprietor, Brian Biamah, on what makes this a unique shoe store.

What are anatomic shoes? Anatomic shoes are comfortable shoes hand-crafted from soft leather by footwear experts. They are designed to conform to the shape of your feet, allowing them to sit naturally and snugly. The arch-support tucked beside the leather insoles holds your feet in a natural position giving you lasting support while walking or standing. Special latex-foam layers stacked on top of air soles ensure that no matter the terrain, any shock experienced while walking is effectively absorbed to minimise any fatigue and pain. We stock a variety of formal shoes, casual shoes and open shoes to suit women of all ages and lifestyles.

What’s inspired you to open this unique shoe store?

her to meet her Prince Charming. We pride ourselves in helping women discover footwear that doesn’t compromise on style or support, giving them the chance too, to live happily ever after.

While in Greece, my thoughts flashed back to conversations and interactions with other women in physiotherapy waiting rooms, offices and social gatherings, reminding me that there were more women out there who too would like Anatomic Shoes either for their beauty, comfort and support, or all the above! I therefore decided to take the risk to bring the shoes to the market, because I believe that everybody deserves to live their daily lives in comfort, confidence and cheerfulness.

Who is best suited to fit in Ella Anatomic Shoes?

Does the name of your outlet have some significance? If so, what does it mean?

After experiencing physical distress stemming from many years wearing heeled shoes and sitting long hours throughout my working career, I sought to find relief in weekly physiotherapy and massages. Though effective, the relief was always short-lived, leading to an unhealthy alternating cycle of stress and repose. I knew I needed to find footwear that would provide comfort and absorb much of the impact that sent spiking pain up from the heels of my feet to the top of my spine.

In Greek mythology, the name Ella means ‘beautiful fairy maiden’. However, in popular culture, many may recognise the name from the children's story Cinderella, a captivating tale of a beautiful young girl living with her evil stepmother and two stepsisters, but whose life is transformed by a shoe made to fit a foot like no other.

I spent several months searching and trying various comfortable shoes until I finally came across what would be the silver bullet to my problem; Anatomic

Our brand draws reference from the sandals in this mythical tale, which were a perfect fit for Cinderella. So much so that the conformity of her foot to it led

Shoes. To my surprise, these were so comfortable that I was now able to walk longer distances and stand for extended periods of time. In addition to this, they looked great!

Our primary target is the woman who values the comfort of walking and standing as much as if not more than the aesthetic appearance of her shoes. Above all, she holds her overall happiness and physical well being in high regard. She prides herself in feeling present and confident be it at the workplace or spending time out with family and friends. Our customer understands that through keeping her feet happy, she keeps her world happy. We also have plans in order to introduce men’s anatomic shoes to our collection, so that they too can experience the exceptional comfort.

What should first time customers expect when they visit your outlet? We always ensure that we attend to every customer on a personal level, to understand his or her preferences, needs and experience. We like our customers to come in and feel warm and welcome in our space, where they can expect to find a variety of looks and styles of anatomic shoes. We value every customer interaction and are committed to nurturing lasting relationships as stewards for overall well being.

PLANNER Shifting Panoramas

An art exhibition by Avni Shah Avni is a Kenyan artist who grew up in Thika and embarked on a career in art during the long holidays after completing O-levels. She worked for two years with her mentor Keith Harrington, a renowned fine artist at Studio Xenium in Nairobi. Her inspiration to paint old buildings, mosques, alleyways, waterfronts and ornate doors started during this time. She produced works for her first solo exhibition at Gallery Watatu in 1984 titled ‘Mombasa Old Town.’ Subsequently she went to India to study for two years at the famous J. J. School of Art in Mumbai, where she attained a Teachers Training Diploma in Art Education. After returning from India she has done various solo exhibitions including ‘Opening Doors to Lamu’ at the New Stanley Hotel in 1989, ‘Expressions of the Kenyan Coast’ in Sundern Germany in 2001.This is where she met our then ambassador to Germany Mr Frost Josiah who, after seeing her works, had no doubts about how the Kenyan stand at the ITB Fair in Berlin should look like and asked her to showcase her works. This is where diversification to painting Kenyan highlights was born. Her works at the Kenyan stand at the

ITB Fair in 2002 included her painting titled ‘Unusual Friends’ depicting adoption of Baby Oryx by a lioness in Samburu National Park, which was presented to the Mayor of Berlin. Another painting, ‘Wonder of the World’, hangs prominently at the Kenyan Embassy in Germany. Another painting ‘At the Water’s Edge’ was presented to Honourable Charles Njonjo at the relaunch of the Yellow Pages directory. The exhibition titled ‘Scenes of Kenya’ was held at the Voyager Resort Mombasa in December 2002. In this exhibition, along with other scenes of Kenya, she put up many paintings of Dhows, which was another tradition of the coast she wanted to capture. Avni has been teaching art to students from the age of five to A-level at her home and has even organised an exhibition for her students at the Sarit Centre in 1995. She focuses on teaching the foundations or basics of art with her students so that they can eventually work on their own with the right tools for selfexpression. She has worked with world-renowned architectural mosaic artist Jim Anderson on broken tile mosaics. In 2003 she prepared some mosaics that are displayed in the Mathare Mental Hospital. In 2005 she worked with Jim at the Addenbrooks Hospital in Cambridge where the mosaic was commissioned by one of the former British Ambassador to Kenya, Mr Edward Clay. The mosaics prepared by her in 2006 are displayed at the Kenyatta Hospital. These mosaics create warm, positive and life affirming environments for the patients and their families. Launching her career as a watercolour artist, Avni painted coastal

16

scenes of Mombasa, Lamu, and Zanzibar. Her style and subjects have evolved over the years and also has been experimenting with multiple mediums, techniques and textures. She has found in painting knives an effective tool to create numerous effects. The edge of the knife can be used to create raised grass. Scratching wet paint over dry paint allows you give an effect of peeling paint on old dhows and buildings. Corrugated roofing sheets can be effectively created using this tool. In her current exhibition, Avni captures ‘Shifting Panoramas’. These are depictions of daily activities of people along the East African coast, which are no longer taken up by younger generation, who look for easier ways to make a living. We have some Kenyan tribes whose simple ways of life are shifting in face of modernisation. Their way of simple dressing or beautifying themselves are being replaced by modern attire and cosmetics. The old buildings, doors and alleyways of the coastal towns are giving way to meet the needs of present day. You can see dhows, which for centuries ferried goods and people between Africa and Asia. To the list of what is shifting, Avni has added the world-renowned migration, wildlife and snow on Mount Kenya which Kenya is proud off, but which may become things of the past in the face of global warming and geopolitical battles with its neighbours. Avni enjoys colours and this is projected clearly in her paintings. Also, her passion for details is evident in her work like the beads around the neck of the Samburu women, the studs on the coastal door or the luggage on the Dala-Dala. Rather than abstract or impressionist, Avni is bringing figurative work back on to the scene.

VILLAGE

Awakenings

An art exhibition by Ashwin Patel Ashwin Patel is set to showcase his work at Village Market from the 9th to 15th of October 2019. VB had a chat with him about his work and the inspiration behind it.

Ashwin, tell us a little bit about yourself. I was born in Nairobi and I’ve been living in Kenya for over 40 years now. I consider myself a pretty fun loving person who likes to hang out with my family and friends. I enjoy spending time outdoors and experiencing this beautiful country. Over the past few years, I’ve reconnected with my love for creating. It started with my love for the environment and my plants. I started growing orchids and bonsais at home. The more time I spent nurturing these plants, the more I craved to create more.

When did the creative bug first bite you? When I was younger I was quite artistic, but work took over and my creativity was put on hold. A few years ago, when my granddaughter was about to turn one, I wanted to do something different for her, give her something special, something that I hoped, whenever she looks at it, she’ll know that I am with her and a part of her life all the time. I’m proud to say that she’s the lucky owner of my very first art piece (after I started creating again).

Tell us about your craft I began doodling on anything I could find, whether it was the case of my eye glasses or the back of an envelope. My first pieces are black and white pen drawings on paper.

planner

I moved onto adding some pastel colours into my creations and eventually more vibrant colours. These pieces are done with colourful markers on paper. I then started experimenting with canvas and other materials, acrylic paints and more. I love the thrill of experimenting and trying new techniques and materials.

How do you feel when you are in your element? Art for me is an emotion, a journey into the unknown and I know I have to map my own paths along the way. This re-awakening has allowed my emotions and soul to evolve. Allowing myself into a fantasy world; one where, as I express myself, I begin to find the inner calm that I’ve always desired to have.

Awakenings is your first exhibition ever. How are you feeling about it? There is a scary thrill of putting myself and the art pieces that I have created out into the world. As an artist, I want my pieces to speak to all people and be open to their individual understanding and interpretation. I would love for something in them to awaken, to find something that they have been searching for and find the courage to do something they have always wanted to do – to find peace, happiness and clarity from within.

After hours exhausted perfecting the ideal architectural design, the painful, backbreaking wrestle with new furniture, you step back and… something is terribly wrong. However, fret no more! Here at Power Innovations, we have the undisclosed secret that can remedy this bewildering frustration. Let us begin by dispelling some tragic myths plaguing people today. The most important design feature when sculpting a striking home or office is not its beautiful, Italian leather seating. Nor is it those hand woven linen curtains hanging elegantly across your perfectly shaped window panes. It’s not even those gorgeous Masai market African statues masterfully placed at your doorway. The pinnacle of creating an outstanding space is…lighting. Surprised? Hakuna matata – we’ve got you covered! The helpful, experienced staff at Power Innovations offer free consultations to guarantee that your vision becomes a reality. In addition, they gladly offer guidance on the latest lighting trends, patiently educating customers on options that are environmentally friendly and cost effective (hoorah!). Who knew that a strategically placed light fixture could triple the perceived size of a room? Or that a picture light could radically enhance the colours and beauty of a simple wall painting? Or that the distinguishing feature between a cool, focused atmosphere and a warm, cheerful one is the simple colour tone of a light bulb? Indeed, with the latest repertoire of lighting products, ranging from bulbs, lamps, lampshades, chandeliers and lighting accessories for

feature

entire homes, restaurants and office blocks to elegant solar/electrical outdoor fixtures for those gorgeous outdoor ambiances – all your needs can be met at one destination. With the latest science revealing the profound impact lighting has upon our health, we understand the complexity of the lighting industry; to ensure we maximise the benefits for our clientele, we update our stocks every few months, ensuring the latest trends – health, environmental and aesthetic – are perfectly catered for. At Power Innovations, our aim is to make your life as easy as possible; thus, for every purchase from our store, it is our pleasure to offer free wiring and installation services. Furthermore, our range of traditional lighting products has now been amplified to include hardware, plumbing and electrical accessories; if Nairobi has been in need of a DIY store, Power Innovations has risen to the challenge! Our revolutionary hardware section is a DIYer’s dream; handy drills, hammers, paint brushes, nails, screws, spanners and unique tools from the UK and Italy line our shelves – and that’s just to name a few! In addition, our skilled electricians are happy to fix those irksome house appliances that have their ‘moods’; bring over that toaster, iron box, kettle or extension cable and have us take a look at it before you decide to buy another one. For anyone and everyone, the staff at Village Market are delighted to be of service. We look forward to seeing you!

ELEVATING THE COMMON DESSERT

A

lmost every meal is incomplete without a good dessert, but not all desserts are good for you. Which is why AFTA EATS are set to elevate the common desert into a healthier, tastier and all together better experience for everyone to enjoy. We spoke to these dessert specialists on what it takes to achieve a sweet course.

What is your outlet all about? Kindly give a brief description of your menu and service? AFTA EATS was born out of a need to revolutionise the cafe culture. We wanted to offer food that is free from artificial ingredients, additives and preservatives. Treats that cater to a large number of dietary requirements and that taste much better than anything our customers have tasted before.

What inspired you to establish a business that offers this menu and unique service? Three of us came together as friends who were all on a transformative journey to lead healthier lifestyles. We found it very difficult to get healthy food on the go, and almost impossible when it came to desserts and treats. We decided to explore the current dessert scene, travelling the globe in search of the best natural sweeteners and sugar alternatives. From our travel and experiences, we developed a guilt-free indulgence ethos which shapes everything we do today.

Does the name of your outlet have a significance? If so, what does it mean? AFTA EATS is a play on the British pronunciation of the word After, which we used to highlight the roots of the brand coming out of London. As the name suggests, we wanted customers to make a clear distinction of our outlets as playful, chilled-out cafes, rather than formal restaurants.

Who are you targeting with this unique concept? Everyone is welcome at AFTA EATS. We aim to make our establishments as welcoming and accommodating to all people

26

from all walks of life. If you’re looking for fantastic treats in a friendly environment, you’re our target market.

Why did you choose Village Market as the ideal location for your outlet? We were looking for a destination to launch our flagship store in Africa. Village Market has a great history and is the number one destination for quality products and retailers alike. It was only right that we collaborate with Village Market and their fantastic management team to create a buzz around our first African outlet.

What should first time customers expect when they visit your outlet? First timers are in for fantastic hospitality from a warm and friendly team, followed by tasty healthy products all in a charming atmosphere. Our staff is highly trained to guide you through any dietary questions and recommends the right option to suit your needs. So whether it’s a low sugar option, or a full blown indulgent one, our team are ready to guide you to your ideal choice.

HOW TO READ

food labels

BETTY OKERE-ODHIAMBO, RD, CDE, MPH

F

ood comes in all forms, each one offering various nutritional needs to the body. Different foods can affect us in various ways. Some people suffer allergies from consuming certain foods others suffer abdominal discomfort of varying degrees. In the case of diabetes, certain foods can affect blood glucose. Unless this is explored in totality, it can actually hamper the management of diabetes thus causing frustration to the patient, their guardians and health care providers. Have you ever considered that carbohydrates may lie hidden in so called super foods? Learning how to read and interpret food labels could just be the answer to many of the woes of diabetic patients out

there and help them better manage their condition. A food label is a panel found on the package of most food products packaged for sale. They usually contain information on the nutritional value and content of the food product in question. For diabetics especially, correct information on the sugar and carbohydrate content in food may be of great use as it helps the patient understand and make a decision on whether or not they should consume that food item. Remember the food item may be labeled as containing zero sugars or no sweeteners, yet contain a high amount of carbohydrates which will still cause blood sugar rise in the body.

HOW TO READ FOOD LABELS • Serving size: This should be compared to the actual amount of the food consumed to determine the amount of nutrients consumed. For example, if a packet of Greek yoghurt indicates that the nutrition information is per 100g serving size, then consuming a 200g of that yoghurt would mean consuming double the amount of nutrients listed. • Calories: This usually helps one understand the amount of energy that will be consumed from eating the food in question in relation to the serving size and the actual amounts consumed • Percentage Daily Values: This is usually abbreviated as DV. This gives an indication in percentage of how much in terms of quantity a person consumes from a particular product in relation to the amounts of that nutrient required for proper functioning of the body • Nutrients required in large amounts: This may include fiber and other micronutrients and minerals of great importance • Nutrients required in less amounts: This may include saturated fats and sugars which may be counter interactive in trying to manage health conditions. NB: Beware of nutritional claims written in bold or in unique fonts. They are often aimed at marketing the product and will likely distract the consumer from finding out the actual content of the food product.
