Village www.villagemarket-kenya.com CHRISTMAS AT VILLAGE MARKET 25th December
Christmas, in the words of Andy Williams ‘’It’s the most wonderful time of the year,’’ and indeed it was. One will always enjoy Christmas at Village Market from shopping & dining to creating cherished moments. Over the festive period, the eateries were a buzz with people enjoying meals with their friends and families while some shopped for Christmas gifts at various outlets across the mall. Music loomed the air as melodious Christmas carols were sang and live bands delighted the crowds with their instruments and dance numbers, adding to the cheerful festive mood. Kids had a little too much fun as they got to enjoy their party at Under the Sea which included loads of presents, fun activities and laughter. Towards the end of the party, Santa gifted each child with a toy camera for them to capture their special moments. Village Market is the place to be during Christmas and we hope we will see you this year!
NYE PARTY 31st December
For many, Village Market was the place of choice to usher in the New Year. Excitement at the mall was so palpable you could almost touch it. With a DJ at the Courtyard and live band at the Food Court, Village Market was the spot for family and friends to countdown those last few seconds to midnight and the start of a new decade, happy 2020!

Village SCENE SANTA’S GROTTO December 24th-26th
This past Christmas, Santa came to spread good cheer at Village Market, however he did not come down a chimney like you imagined, he instead hosted a meet and greet session, very cool, right? It was such an amazing day at Santa’s Grotto, kids got to create happy moments as they posed for pictures with Santa. As always, he did not come empty handed but with a sack full of gifts for the little ones. The kids received and opened their gifts gleefully with warm smiles on their faces and joy in their hearts. Christmas at VM
CHRISTMAS DECOR Deck the halls we did. You would be forgiven to think that you were walking right into a storybook. Village Market transformed into a dreamy wonderland with a mix of thousands of Wisteria flowers, dangling wreaths, garlands and giant snowflakes hanging from the ceilings. As you walked through the hallways, you were met with breath-taking centre pieces like huge bauble structure wrapped in flowers, sleighs led by reindeers as well as life-size toy cars. Our magnum opus, was the unique Christmas tree that was dotted with huge colourful flowers and draped in Christmas lights. At night time, Christmas lights illuminated the mall, creating scenes of awe and splendour. Customers delighted in taking photos next to the centrepieces and sharing them with their family and friends. Share your photo on social media using the hashtag #VmMoments for the world to see! Wait till you see what we have in store this year.

Philippine Embassy
IN NAIROBI ORGANIZES FIRST ASEAN FAMILY DAY
O
n 8th November 2019, the Embassy of the Republic of the Philippines in Nairobi, as Chair of the ASEAN Nairobi Committee, organised the first ASEAN Family Day at the Village Bowl, Village Market. In his opening remarks, Ambassador Alex G. Chua welcomed the members of the ASEAN diplomatic corps and their families stating, “today we celebrate the true spirit of ASEAN as one community, sharing and caring, an ASEAN Community in Nairobi that is one family. Family is the true cornerstone of each ASEAN country. Our families give us the determination and strength to succeed.”
THE ASEAN COMMUNITY “Our ASEAN family in Nairobi is particularly important, because though we might not be biologically related, the ASEAN community, forged by our unity in our diversity, bonds us together in our home away from home, which is Kenya,” Ambassador Chua emphasized. Ambassador Chua added, “the sport of bowling is something the ASEAN Communities have traditionally bonded over, and continued appreciation for bowling should also be experienced in Kenya.” The ASEAN Family Day activities included lessons on how to bowl and bowling games, culminating in the sharing of ASEAN delicacies, because no ASEAN event is complete without

showcasing ASEAN cuisine. The Philippines, as Chair of the ASEAN Committee in Nairobi for 2019, hopes that the ASEAN Family Day will be a permanent part of the ASEAN Community Calendar in Nairobi, as a testament to the dynamic and close relations among ASEAN in Kenya. Four ASEAN countries have representations in Kenya, namely Indonesia, Malaysia, Philippines and Thailand.

INSPIRED BY THE SENSE OF TIME, TIES, TEXTURE AND TASTE FROM KENYA IN THE 1980’S
P
eople who grew up in Kenya in the ‘80s and early ‘90s will arguably say those were the happiest childhood memories of any generation in Kenya. Life in Kenya was simple and filled with a sense of togetherness. The ‘80s and ‘90s were a decade of bold style, colours and iconic trends. The city danced to the beats of live bands and the only way to interact with friends and family was face-to-face, in real time. It is our history and culture that paved our identity as Kenyans. It made us ‘one’ and this ‘oneness’ has enabled us to distinguish the diverse parts of our culture and to be proud of our homeland.
BALLPOINT SOCIAL CLUB Ballpoint Social Club embraces the sense of time, ties, texture and taste from Kenya in the 1980’s. Ballpoint Social Club is all about flavour, nostalgia, contrast, quiet confidence, loud music, loud art and togetherness.
14
In this digital age where we spend most of our time in front of a computer or on our smart phones, there is a need to connect with people and have meaningful interactions that don’t use emojis. We spend too much time in front of a screen and not enough time moving, exploring and socialising.
CORE ETHOS Ballpoint Social Club invites families, friends and couples to occupy their time in a safe, productive and convivial way – with a pervasive spirit of sharing, a core ethos of this space. The spaces enables you to disconnect from the digital world and reconnect with your loved ones over some fun games such as ping pong, darts and over 30 different board games. Ping pong is a beloved pastime, and it’s especially delightful when paired with great food and drinks. Roll the dice and relive your childhood with classic board games such as Monopoly or discover
new exciting ones bound to keep the good times rolling. Enjoy a sundowner on the terrace with a beautiful view of Gigiri, or simply hang out and engage in some healthy competition. Ballpoint Social Club’s mission is to bring people together and create a sense of community through sharing, with great food, great music and fun games. The space is creative and multifunctional, individuals looking for an active space from where to work or hold meetings can use it for events or by smaller groups. Ballpoint is fun and casual. Bring friends, or make new ones – every time you walk through the doors you have arrived at the best party in the city. Ballpoint Social Club will usher in the next generation of entertainment in Kenya. Stay tuned for tournaments, parties and so much more! So, gather up your crew and get ready to unplug and play!

The exhibition features artworks by four principal contemporary East African artists with both local and international recognition. It focuses on the mediums they mainly use, emphasizing the masterly handling of the techniques, spanning years of practice and producing great works. The exhibition presents Ugandan Art Master David Kibuuka, a senior generation master in Batik based in Canada, and painter and art instructor Anwar Sadat Nakibinge – one of the most outstanding aspects of his work is the way the compositions in his paintings are similar but not repetitive. Each painting carries its own personality and message thereby engaging the viewer into a myriad reactions and relief. Sebandeke Muhammad presents a mixture of works ranging from wildlife to social and decorative aspects of life. His art gives viewers an opportunity to learn about the role of art in society. MANJANO VISUAL ARTS EXHIBITION AND ARTS PRIZE
M
anjano is an annual visual arts exhibition and prize competition by the GoDown Arts Centre. Touted as Nairobi’s most prestigious visual arts award held at The GoDown Arts Center, Village Market has successfully hosted seven editions of the art exhibition with this year’s event being held in March/April. Village Market as a major hub for art is attractive to artists who voted for this alternative location as part of a strategy to broaden appreciation of their work and make it more accessible to a buying public. The exhibition has defied an uncertain beginning and established itself as a robust platform for up and coming visual artists in the city to re-imagine Nairobi. Manjano started in 2010 as the Nairobi Province Exhibition and was conceived as part of a larger national vision for the arts. Ms. Judy Ogana, the then managing director, and Agatha Ndambuki, the then programme officer, must be credited for their open approach, which brought together the Ministry of Culture and arts practitioners into meaningful engagement. The GoDown has stayed the course, continuing to work with the Department of Culture in Nairobi for another year and now solo, to provide this platform.
pressure to not only produce work, but also to up their game as new artists emerge. The judging is anonymous and the artworks carry numbers, not names – and already there have been unexpected upsets. According to Lima, “it’s a true competition where anybody can win.” The process happens in two stages, a preliminary shifting followed by a more detailed scrutiny. The judges’ decisions are final and the GoDown, which plays a facilitative and administrative role, does not interfere in the process. The prize money is an added incentive to the two categories comprising of practicing artists and students.
Note: This is an excerpt of an article originally published in Jahazi: Journal of Performance, Arts & Culture in 2018, and authored by Garnette Oluoch-Olunya.
GROWING AND IMPROVING The exhibition has grown. It has also improved in terms of its organisation and the quality of the works selected and displayed. Although the works submitted vary from year to year, the artists now prepare better as they have come to anticipate the event and scope of the competition. This is a vindication of one of the initial purposes – to not only encourage experimentation and new approaches in their work, but to also provide the artists with a testing ground that might further hone their skills. Lima Mbai, who spearheaded Manjano from 2011, observed that seasoned artists have felt the
22
Now in its 11th year, Manjano has gone on to become one of the staples of Nairobi’s arts calendar. Since its inception, Manjano has received up to 1,500 artist submissions. Each year, the judges are drawn from art organizations, curator/artists, or academia. The vetting process is exciting and important as it filters out dimensions of critique in the visual arts sector that stem solely from the judges. The GoDown does not prescribe any aesthetic or ideological criteria to them, nor a set number of works to be ‘passed’ for the final exhibition. The call for this year’s submission is out, with a 21 February deadline.

T
he African Kaleidoscope is an art exhibition showcasing two different styles of art by two friends who met out of their love of the dynamic and living energy that exists in Africa through scenes of people, places, nature and abstracts. The African Kaleidoscope is an art exhibition showcasing two different styles of art by two friends who met out of their love of the dynamic and living energy that exists in Africa through scenes of people, places, nature and abstracts. Jjuuko Hoods, 37, is a prolific East African artist with numerous exhibitions behind his name. Born in Kampala, Uganda, he draws influences from his life. He graduated with a first class honours degree in industrial art and design, eventually becoming a full-time artist. His commitment to his craft and talent led him to become one of the top five Ugandan artists, exhibiting both regionally and internationally covering 21 solo shows around the world including the United States of America, Canada, France, Denmark, Japan, South Africa, Rwanda, Kenya and Uganda. He is

currently working on commissioned artworks. Jjuuko and his brother currently run two contemporary galleries in Uganda: Asante Art Gallery and Karibu Art Gallery, which provide a platform for boosting young and upcoming African artists. The galleries currently represent close to 30 artists.
UNIQUE STYLE Jjuuko’s work signifies and embodies life in East Africa. His unique style captures the living energy that exists in communities, whether human or animal, rural or urban. It is along this journey that Zee Caroline met Jjuuko while living in Uganda. She is a creative and management coach from South Africa passionate about the continent. Having travelled in 15 African countries and lived in East and West Africa over the last seven years, her work pulls through the vivid and alive colour that is inherent in the African experience. Her interests and experience in meditative
insight, brain distraction, creative processing, thinking and connecting to moments of peace influence her work. She is inspired by creating an experience of distraction and possible solace for the viewer through an African lens. She works with abstracts and natural inspiration, with each piece holding a very specific surprise for its owner. The pieces of fabrics are either offcuts that are up cycled into artwork or bought at a fair price from local traders. Zee works with local entrepreneurs who use fabric as a centrepiece to their products and are looking to recycle waste – for example, @nyosgh from Ghana is such a company, making furniture, stationery and many more items using Ghanaian fabric prints contribute many pieces to her work. The fabrics Zee specifically used for this exhibition are sourced from Kenya, Ghana, Togo, the Ivory Coast, Ethiopia, Mozambique and South Africa. Clients from Kenya, Ghana, Senegal, South Africa, the UK and France have commissioned pieces from Zee. It is with great pleasure that the artists invite you to come and join them between the 19 February and 4 March to view their pieces and have conversations with them. Jjuuko’s work can be found at Polka Dot Art Gallery in Kenya, Asante and Karibu art galleries in Uganda or Calgary Alberta at Ndugga Phillip. The Maasai Treads brand of footwear has since evolved from sandals, which are handmade in Kenya (since the tyre reached our shores) from old and rejected car tyres and inner tubes. They also recycle old leather jackets for their leather-recycled range. Over the centuries, the Maasai tribe developed the craft of sandal making using cow hide, a sandal called an Alwala. In the last few decades, the protection of wild animals against poaching and unnatural deaths has seen the Maasai move from using animal hide to using recycled tyre treads. Maasai Treads products embrace all the traditions of these craftsmen, offering 100 years of Maasai tradition in one shoe! Our skilled craftsmen have been making these sandals for generations and take pride in their handy work.

RAMPEL DESIGNS
Design For Living A
collaborative showroom brings two experts in interiors into the Village Market. The Rampel Designs and the Design For Living showroom is located opposite the Village Market management offices and showcases an array of spectacular furniture, fabrics and wallpaper.
RAMPEL DESIGNS The particular character of the Rampel Designs product lies in being the result of two worlds, both in space and in time. Carpenters make each piece individually, from beginning to end using the same methods and standards of the old world cabinetmakers. Although the process is traditional, the outcome is contemporary. The style of Rampel’s furniture is minimalist, yet sculptural, giving the pieces the impression that they have been carved. Marc’s furniture is made with skill and patience and from the very soil of this continent – its most precious hardwoods.
DESIGN FOR LIVING The company is made up of textile specialists that have been focusing on fabrics and wallpaper for the project and residential market for nine years. Hand-picked from the best manufacturers that the world has to offer, their work can be seen in every prestigious establishment within East Africa. Design For Living places a strong emphasis on quality and choice, and with over 2,000 articles in any pattern and shade, the company can meet the aesthetic and functional needs of any surface, in any space.

Village ARE WE DROWNING IN PLASTIC YET?
P
lastic has indeed completely transformed our lives; everything from food safety to modern medicine has been made possible by its fantastic and varied properties. It is affordable, convenient, strong, light, versatile and comes in many shapes and sizes. It is everything we wanted all wrapped up in one but be warned, this one we call ‘love’ has its dark side. Many may wonder why all of a sudden the world has woken up and is now against the very thing that brought convenience to our lives and the most obvious reason I could think of is plastic pollution. Our plastic waste has invaded the highest mountains and deepest oceans. No one knows how long it will take to disappear, but it’s nothing short of 500 years from the day you choose not to recycle or properly dispose off that plastic. Plastics are made from chemicals that come from the production of planet-warming fuels such
30
as gas, oil and even coal. Our reliance on plastic therefore prolongs our demand for these dirty fuels. Burning plastics in incinerators also releases climate-wrecking gases and toxic air pollution leading to the global warming that we are now experiencing today and will continue to experience for the next decade unless we choose to be agents of change. As the saying goes, 'if you want to change the world, you have to begin with yourself'.
NO PLASTIC POLICY From the beginning of January 2020, Village Market’s management office adopted a no plastic policy. This means no plastic water bottles, no plastic utensils, no plastic straws, no plastic food containers and reduction of use of disposable pens by increased use of pencils and fountain pens. The management office also started an initiative to reduce the use of paper and electric-
ity. The office has established an in-house task force to look into different ways it can reduce the use of plastic and be more environmentally friendly. Mr Hamed Ehsani, Managing Director at Village Market, says, “we understand that our office being small may not make a huge impact on the environment; however, we feel we need to do our part and set an example for other companies to follow. Along the same line we have partnered with The World Wildlife Fund (Kenya Chapter) to make use of Under The Sea recreational facility to provide more information to our younger generation about our oceans.”
TRASH TO TREASURE Additionally Village Market has collaborated with T3, a local recycling company in the ‘Trash to Treasure’ project. This project seeks to sensitize Village Market shoppers and the public on responsible disposal and upcycling of plastic. The partnership has created a life-sized whale that is an indictment and reminder of the severity of plastics in our water bodies, as well as being a drop off point for single use plastics. All shoppers and the public at large are encouraged to play their part in converting their PET plastic into textile thus offering a sustainable solution to the global plastic epidemic. It is the start of a new decade and as our environmentalists have told us, we are running out of time. It is never too late to make the world a better place, let us all adopt and embrace the Greta Thunberg mentality – it’s now or never, let us all be champions of the earth.
HEALTH
feature
Wellness and how it equates to a better you W
ellness refers to a state of optimum physical, psychological and mental wellbeing. Over the years, many diseases are taking a greater toll on our population than ever before. The reasons behind this are varied and include climate change, drug resistance as well as a general change in lifestyle such as diet, physical activity, health-seeking behaviour and even rest and relaxation. The medical fraternity promotes wellness as a top priority because a sick person would not be able to put in their maximum effort in their daily activities. This would therefore lead to poor performance in the workplace, psychological and mental conditions such as stress, anxiety and depression and subsequently a poor quality of life. Actively seeking wellness involves three crucial things. Firstly, an individual is the first doctor of their own body. This means that they alone would be able to tell if there was any kind of disharmony in any of their body systems. It may range from something seemingly minor such as an unexplained muscle ache in their
arm, to something more ominous like severe and unrelenting headaches that are not responding to rest, hydration or an over the counter painkiller. When this happens, the onus is on the individual to openly and without fear, interrogate their symptoms and then seek for professional advice if they deem it necessary. The second way of actively seeking for wellness is engaging a qualified professional who would be able to take one through their symptoms in a systematic and empathetic manner and then come up with a management plan. This needs to be a cohesive effort between the doctor and the patient. The third and final way of ensuring wellness and hence a better you, would be to follow the instructions of the health care provider, know as much as possible about the ailment that one is suffering from and even seek a second and third opinion if that is what it will take for one to feel well and wholesome again. We live in a country where healthcare is readily available. It would be unfortunate for a person who had the financial means and physical capability to seek health to ignore early signs of a life threatening illness and then suffer the devastating consequences later. In the world we live in today, we need to try and put fear in its place and that is the very last place in our psyche. In matters pertaining to health
and wellness, it is only the afflicted person who can actively choose to look for, accept, support and comfort oneself when dealing with their wellbeing. A person who is well is a person who is productive to the family, the society and to the world. In addition, this person lives a fulfilled life because they have equipped themselves with the knowledge and tools about how to best take care of their bodies in totality – physically, psychologically and mentally. And this is exactly what M.P Shah Hospital provides in a comprehensive wellness programme package for a full body check up.
