The beauty of design is that it is a continuous and an ever-evolving process. To constantly feel inspiration to spruce up our residential or commercial spaces, and whether it is a collaboration with talented creatives and crafts men or a simple re-arrangement, design is fundamentally about the human touch.

The beauty of our spaces has a direct correlation to our esteem. In this issue, we highlight brands in the mall that add aesthetical value in our personal and shared spaces. Village Market has always been passionate about custom Made in Kenya and Made in Africa brands, we are excited to re-introduce you to some of them from page 10 to page 15. We also showcase the home and living range from HOMEBOX and NOBRI.

One thing for sure is that, time really flies. At the blink of an eye, the seasons wrap up and begin a fresh. In this Home and Living Edition, we look back at the second edition of the Luxury Living and Design Expo (LLDE) to pay great homage to all of our partners and participating tenants who poured passion, and tirelessly and lovingly put together the finest expo in Eastern Africa. This year, the show case touched on Kenya’s most promising property development, tech for home and office, interiors and gardening, concept stores and showrooms to mention a few. The growth was notable and one thing we know for certain is that it can only get better with the third edition next year! We hope that you got to engage with players who create timeless pieces and aesthetics. Village Market has gone through seasons of growth and re-invention with the addition of New Villagers in the last two years. Recently, we have had the pleasure of being home to new entrants like Maliti Black Premium, LadyLuck Shapewear and KUZI. ART IN THE OPEN – AFRICA DAY EDITION

What better way to celebrate Africa than with the embodiment of its Art. Collectors and art lovers were treated to a much coveted display of Art from different parts of Kenya. An expression of the continent that saw many artists bring out their paintings and artefacts that best depicted the African continent and its people.

AFRICA DAY

The month of May was all about cele brating Africa. The rich bold colors of what represents Africa as a continent through music, art and entertainment, we reminded ourselves of the Africa we see. Africa is diverse, rich in color, culture and language, with a people unique in their own ways. The mall was filled with beating drums and sounding horns, colored with people adorned in the bold colors of African Kitenge dancing to the tune of many nations. On May 25th, we chose to not only celebrate Africa but to be Africa and choose Africa every day; our mother land, the cradle of mankind.

ITALIAN FOOD & WINE FESTIVAL

Village Market hosted the Italian Food & Wine Festival at the Food court on the 4th & 5th June. We were graced with the beautiful sounds and taste of Italy during the festival officiated by the Ambassa dor of Italy to Kenya His Excellency the Ambassador Alberto Pieri.

The opening ceremony left us all nostalgic with music from violinist Alice Marini who played the Kenyan and Italian National Anthems followed by Infant di Paganini. We also got to hear from Sikelia Saxophone Quartet who played some of the best Italian

music with great passion, expertise and desire.

The event was organized by Comitato delgi Italiani all’Estero (COMITES Kenya) whose mandate is to be a bridge between Italian residents in Kenya and the Italian Embassy. The weekend had 10 exhibitors with various products like wine, cheese, ice cream among others.

It was nothing short of beautiful as we indulged in the delicately prepared food items. A true depiction of Italian delicatessen.

The Village Market Open Chess Championships was held on the 23rd & 24th July. Despite the cold weather, the teams were warmed up by the challenge that was before them; the thrill of calculated moves and strategy as the winners got to walk away with vouchers, cash prizes and trophies.

Village Market’s Mini golf course is back!

The indoor 18-hole miniature golf course themed as a junkyard is located on the fourth floor of the new wing, adjacent to other recreational offerings at Village Market, including Ozone Trampoline Park and Under the Sea – Nairobi’s largest indoor children’s playground.

Aptly named ‘The Yard’, it offers creatively designed obstacles with a carefully curated selection of repurposed junk hanging from the walls, and ceilings positioned on the courses. The Yard showcases the storytelling power of common objects and how repurposing can breathe new life into old items and impact the reduction of waste on the earth. It chronicles

and highlights the mundane, insignifi cant objects of our existence and makes them remarkable. It reinforces that sustainability isn’t about perfection but mankind’s slight differ ences that, once accumulated create a greater difference.

LUXURY LIVING AND DESIGN expo

The second edition of the Luxury Living and Design Expo 2022, Village Market’s staple luxury event made for an exciting return at the rooftop. Industry players came in large numbers to showcase their prowess in interior design, property management and development, landscape, gardening, opulent kitchens and bespoke smart appliances. The rooftop was filled with color, design and creativity depicting the true meaning of luxury which exudes distinguished workmanship, quality, exclusivity and affordability.

DESIGNING FOR AFRICA

The expo was launched by Chief Guest Prof. Hatem Eltaher Hassan, the founder and Managing Director of Design and Development Kenya (DND Kenya) in the presence of the mall’s Managing Director Mr. Hamed Ehsani and invited guests Dr. Susan Kibue and famed interior designer Ms. Eryll Sharma. Themed ‘Designing for Africa’, this year’s expo had us charged up to redefine what Designing for Africa means. DND Kenya get to do this by engaging a team of young architects who are effortlessly doing exploits in the local and international architectural spaces while Dr. Susan Kibue representing the

Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology (JKUAT) quipped that Designing for Africa means enabling living in dignity for all levels of society.

The general agreement is that ‘Designing for Africa’ is not just about putting up buildings, but incorporating the African emotion, texture and landscape into the overall result and making it a spectacle to behold.

LLDE AWARDS

The floor featured a splendidly curated mix of modern designs and technology. Manzil Designs,

the winners of this year’s most coveted First prize Best in show (Interior and Exterior Designs) curated three different living spaces with a touch of Lamu, Moroccan and South African design inspirations. Their superb collaboration with Samsung presented functional and beautiful technology as well as virtual reality design on site allowing visitors to experience different interior space designs in 3D winning them visitor accolades. For the lovers of fine and opulent finishes, Elegant Fittings who came in second presented the best granite and engineered-stone rich in sophistication, design and performance following their extraordinary workmanship that

saw them build for three and a half days. First time showcase partners, OPPEIN walked away with the third-place award having wowed the show visitors with their display of exquisite cabinets, home accessories and appliances.

The first prize in the category of Property Design and Development was taken up by Design and Development Kenya (DND Kenya), who had an array of modern property designs to showcase including the model project - Kovo that features multiple uses that caters to the residential and commercial needs of the Kenyan Market. Olympia Gold Real Estate and Globe Developers took second place highlighting different high end premium properties for sale and rent in beautiful and

serene environments in Nairobi. JKUAT came in third with a unique display of a community project and model drawings done by their students to provide decent, beautiful, func tional and affordable housing for middle- and low-income earners.

This year was a highly contested award affair, with all partners bringing their best to curate the next level luxury experience. Tindi Ronnie Chris has practiced art for several years and majors in painting but also explores other disciplines of art like sculpture through recycling. He loves to illustrate his dreams as an artist by painting them on canvas.

Tindi is also engaged in the building of the Uganda Arts industry through his active member ship in the Uganda Visual Artist and Designers Association (UVADA) where he serves as a Vice President. He was shortlisted as one of the top 10 contemporary artists in Uganda by the culture trip in 2014.

Brief biography and about his work

His work is mainly about hope and beauty. Tindi expresses himself through working with colour, mainly acrylic paints in a thick form. His colourful work harmonizes his creation with God’s creation to inspire and uplift one’s spirit. He draws inspiration from the people around him, animals, cultural beliefs and the relationship between man and nature, executed in an impressionistic style and sometimes mixed with cubism and symbolism. Today, he works with fabric cut-offs of bitengi collected from different tailors, and fashion houses as a measure of conserving the environment. He goes on to explore a unique art style he originally came up with to produce art works that are a result of collages and paints.

Breaking the barrier for better recovery using hydrotherapy

Hydrotherapy is the use of water to provide therapeutic effects for musculoskeletal and neural rehabilitation. It is very useful in treating different types of soft tissue and bone injuries as well as neuromuscular conditions such as muscular dystrophy.
