Happiness is like an ocean wave, an energy that needs to be replenished over and over. There is no doubt that all human beings are in pursuit of happiness. Simply put, happiness is the end game, and we enjoy being your go-to destination to meet this need.
Happiness is a serving of good food. Experience the rich flavours of West Africa or delectable coffees sourced from the best growers in East Africa, or the tried and tested traditions of Italy. Leaf through as we highlight some of our favorite restaurants from pages 10 to 12.
Happiness is looking good and feeling good. Love what you see in the mirror and throw away all the societal pressure on how a perfect body should look like, with impossible-to-attain beauty standards. Please, dress and accessorize well for yourself! We feature incredible brands catering to intimates, footwear and accessories, and kiddie fashion from pages 14 to 17.
Happiness is a pump of endorphins. The benefits of a good work out regime has been well researched and proven, visit pages 18 and 36 to read more on the direct correlation between regular physical activity, happiness and the state of your heart.
Happiness is as good as a break. In between we give you tips on the latest travel options and where to go. Whether it is a safari or a rendezvous at the beach, pages 30 to 31 detail the perfect tease to get you packed and travelled.
Happiness is an inside job no doubt. It is finding it in the everyday while doing what you love, being in the open surrounded by greenery, sharing a meal with our loved ones, enjoying a favorite book, a friendly acknowledgement with a stranger, a marvel at an art installation or just staring at the beautiful koi fish whiling away in their pond is what the Happyville edition is all about.

S M I L E and be happy
If there is one thing that we want, is to be happy. A sweet symphony, the coming together of different tunes to produce melodies that reach to the depth of our souls.
BEAUTIFUL MEMORIES
The joy that comes with taking a walk down the mall, enjoying the serene environment, learning about plants, experiencing beautifully curated events. Happiness is more than just the smile on your face, it is the beautiful memories we create that keep bringing the feelings back.
PURSUE HAPPINESS
Happiness is the wafting scent of a fresh cup of coffee brewed to perfection. Happiness is taking a stroll in the mall and getting a bar of chocolate and the pleasure it gives as it slowly melts in your mouth. It is getting you some cold bubble tea, or ice cream as you relish the afternoon sun.
Happiness is receiving a surprise bouquet of flowers. An explosion of laughter that comes with moments shared. While happiness is an inside job, there are so many things that can add onto it, food, clothes, shoes, our favourite vacation destinations and our friends and family.
Happiness is a Choice; an everyday cvhoice to keep the positive energies around, to keep building on all the beautiful things life has to offer.
So today if you are faced with a choice, pursue happiness for it will keep compounding the joy that you experience in life!

ADAM MASAVA
ADAM MASAVA
Adam Masava is a self-taught Kenyan artist raised in the infamous Mukuru slums, Nairobi where he draws inspiration for his art. He started painting eight years ago and has since established a name for himself both locally and internationally.
He incorporates different media in his art with the most famous one being corrugated iron sheets, which are also part of the primary building materials in the slums. He repurposes them into canvases with the end result being very unique textured art pieces.
His legendary aerial view subjects are achieved by the fact that he paints from the balcony of his studio at the Mukuru Art Collective. He founded the art club as a way of providing an alternative avenue of livelihood to the numerous unemployed and at-risk youths as well as being a sanctuary for youths interested in art. His art is his way of showing the positive side of where he grew up which is riddled with negative connotations.
He has exhibited in Germany (Hamburg, Essen, Mulheim), The Netherlands (The Hague), The United States (Washington D.C & South Dakota New York and Alabama). Locally he has shown at I.S.K ( F.O.T.A), The Art Fair, Affordable Art Exhibition, Manjano and the Polka Dat Gallery, One Off Gallery and Circle Art Gallery.
COSTER OJWANG
COSTER OJWANG
Coster Ojwang is a 31 years old Kenyan artist practicing and living in Nairobi. He is an expressive painter and a lover of bold strokes and bold colors which can be seen in his works. He draws his inspirations from his own life experiences, places he's been to, people around him and wildlife.
He studied art at The Mwangaza Art School in Kisumu in 2013, graduated in 2015 and immediately moved to Nairobi where he started practicing his art in drawing, painting and collage.
Coster Ojwang's art has been exhibited in The National Museum of Kenya, Golbourn Australia, St.Francis Gallery MA USA, and The Netherlands. Coster's latest exhibitions were: The Contemporary Impressionism at Fairmont the Norfolk Hotel (SOLO), The Talisman Restaurant art show (SOLO), Why I love Kenya at Polka Dot Art Gallery, This Is My Story with Ismael Katterrega at The Polka Dot Art Gallery.
spare by PRINCE HARRY
Prince Harry’s latest book is a memoir reflecting his life as a royal, his struggles after the unprecedented death of his mother, Princess Diana, his deployment to Afghanistan, and other intrigues surrounding his life. It is a rant, a confession, and in some parts, it feels like a long-drunk text that outs the royal details never divulged before. Spare also talks about his battles with the British press.
Released on 10, January 2023, Spare highlights Prince Harry’s relationship with his brother, Prince William, King Charles III, and his father’s marriage to Camilla Parker Bowles. Prince Harry talks about his courtship, marriage to Meghan Markel and the intrigues of the couple’s stepping back from royal duties.
Prince Harry’s revelations range from the ridiculous and infantile to the tragic. It has a very elaborate passage about losing his virginity behind a pub. The book is a testament to his entire life lived in the cold, invasion, and loneliness caused by the temperamental and judgmental public eye.
His life before meeting Meghan Markel was seemingly luxurious. Still, Spare addresses Harry’s panic attacks in the book, especially for someone expected to show up and address the public. Spare talks about Prince Harry’s struggle with psychedelic drugs, planning and executing shopping trips in disguise, and with military precision.
Since its release, Spare has received mixed reactions, with some critics praising Prince Harry’s openness and others criticising his inclusion of too many personal details.
Harry states that he wrote the book not as the prince he was born but as the man he has become.

Alice Ekusi recalls her childhood days in the hills of Lolupe, in the Turkana region of northern Kenya. The reminiscence of her youth goes back to the days that she happily spent with her parents and friends. While growing up she’d never seen her parents worrying about not having enough food for their family.
We lived off milk and meat,” recalls Alice, “but with time, water and pasture started dwindling in the once productive hills and our livestock started to die,” she adds.
With the livestock gone, Alice was left with no choice but to seek an alternative way of earning. She moved to Nakalalei hoping to change her fortunes mining and selling gold specs. But with many other pastoralists’ dropouts doing the same, the mines produced less and less. Now, at age 60 and a failing eyesight, she is compelled to fetch and sell firewood so she can provide at least one meal a day for her three grandchildren.
“Five consecutive failed rainy seasons have decimated more than 2.5 million livestock, the main source of food and income – meaning that children, mothers and the elderly don’t have milk – a critical source of nutrients for livestock keepers,” says Felix Okech, WFP’s Head of Relief & Refugees Operations in Kenya.
“Thanks to a timely contribution from the United States Agency for International Development (USAID), we’ve been able to provide food and cash support to families like Alice’s who will be able
to meet their immediate food needs,” adds Okech.
Alice is among 10,000 families who are benefitting from a monthly cash transfer amounting to US$54 for the next six months. The cash transfers will serve as a lifeline, enabling many to buy food and other essentials as the drought continues to destroy crops and livestock.
“I bought maize and beans and with a part of the cash and I also paid for my grandchildren’s school fees so that they can continue studying,” says Alice. “The beans are already over. I could only afford half a bucket – beans are currently very expensive.”
Alice, her three grandchildren, one goat, and a chicken will survive on a quarter bag of maize –until Alice receives the next monthly cash transfer. In the evenings, Alice prepares ugali, a Kenyan staple made from of maize flour, so that the family can go to bed with a full stomach.
“I was selected to receive this cash because I’m an elderly person who is singlehandedly taking care of young children. I don’t have property or a husband to depend on,” she adds.
In Turkana North, many people have had a sense of hope since the World Food Programme (WFP) started providing emergency cash assistance to communities who have been left with barely anything after the drought.
With the next tranche of cash, Alice plans to purchase more food as well as a goat. “It is in our blood. A homestead is not complete without some goats,” says the hopeful Alice.
Today, 4.4 million Kenyans are on the doorstep

As this humanitarian crisis continues to unfold, WFP with contributions from USAID has been supporting the most vulnerable Kenyans through the Lisha Jamii (Kiswahili for feed families) programme.

An additional 356,400 children under the age of five as well as 213,000 pregnant or breastfeeding mothers will benefit from malnutrition treatment in 15 drought-affected counties.
WFP will also continue supporting the livelihoods of 370,000 Kenyans through resilience-building activities such as rainwater harvesting for irrigation, beekeeping, growing pasture, and drought-tolerant nutritious crops.

WHEN A HEART BREAKS, it doesn’t break even
The heart, for many years, has been thought to be the home of emotions across many cultures. Today, however, we know that the heart is not the dwelling place of our emotions. Despite this, the field of medicine is coming to understand more and more the intimate connection existing between the heart and emotions.
The heart may not be the origin of our emotions but as it stands out, it is highly affected by them. For example, we have discovered that grief or fear can cause cardiac injury. Doctors like myself think of the heart as a machine that pumps blood throughout the body and can be manipulated using the tools of modern medicine. However, when doing this, we pay greater attention to the emotional life that the heart has been believed to contain for so many years. For instance, when you think of a broken heart, you may picture a cartoon drawing with a jagged line through it. As The Script puts it, “When a heart breaks, no, it don’t break even.”
It is a scientific fact that you can die of a broken heart and that there are established ties between depression, mental illness and heart disease. In the course of my cardiology practice, I have met patients with a heart condition first described in detail by Japanese doctors, called takotsubo cardiomyopathy or “broken heart” syndrome. The heart acutely weakens in response to extreme stress or grief, such as what you
might experience after a romantic breakup, the death of a spouse, strong arguments, losing or winning a lot of money, divorce, job loss or financial difficulty or even a surprise party.
Patients (almost always women, for unclear reasons) develop symptoms that mimic those of a heart attack. They may develop chest pain and shortness of breath, even congestive heart failure. It is also possible that unprescribed or illegal stimulants such as cocaine may contribute to broken heart syndrome. This condition is likely to be misdiagnosed as a heart attack because sometimes the symptoms and tests are similar. The most common signs and symptoms of broken heart syndrome are angina (chest pain) and shortness of breath without a history of heart disease. Arrhythmias, irregular heartbeats and cardiogenic shocks may also occur in people with this syndrome. At the moment, there are no known treatments for preventing broken heart syndrome, but learning stress management and problem-solving techniques can assist in improving physical and emotional stress. You may also engage in relaxation techniques like yoga or meditation and taking warm baths. You may consider speaking to someone, eat a healthy diet, get regular exercise and enough sleep, keep your medical appointments and stop unhealthy choices such as smoking, illicit drug use and alcohol abuse.
Treating our hearts optimally will require treating our minds, too.
For example, we have discovered that grief or fear can cause cardiac injury.DR MOHSEN GABALLA, MD, FESC, FSCAI. Head of Cardiovascular Department M.P. Shah Hospital.
