The joy that chocolate brings as it melts in our mouths is unmatched. A burst of rich flavours from more than 30 handcrafted options: hazel, coconut balls, chai spice, milk and dark chocolate made from premium organic fine sourced beans from different parts of Africa.
A deep-set desire for sustainability is at our core; a commitment that we make through paying higher than market rates for cocoa. The small holder farmers we work with
are encouraged to produce quality rather than quantity which in turn improves their standards of living.
The beans are carefully sorted, roasted, winnowed, ground, moulded and packaged. Once the chocolate is ready, it is crafted into different products such as chocolate pralines, truffles & bonbons, chocolate bars, hot cocoa and baking chocolate. Ours is a sweet classic tale of bean-to-bar delectables you are sure to enjoy!

Want a fail-safe conversation starter at the dinner table? Deck your table with handmade table-top accessories that serve either a functional or aesthetic value, or both.
By their very nature, handmade pieces tend to have certain things in common:
- they are unique
- they have a story behind them
- they suggest a host who values creative expression
- almost everyone has an opinion on them
Pick any one of these characteristics and you have a starting point for great conversations between just about any group of people, regardless of the demography. However, with so many options available, it can be intimidating to curate a selection that can ignite an interesting conversation.
We have rounded up our favourite tabletop pieces and shared some interesting bits of information about them
1. Black ceramics made in Uganda: A niche product, black ceramics are little understood, especially because the sooty colour seems to be transferable. However, black ceramics are an age-old utility item and date back to when ceramics were pit fired (by laying clay pieces in a pit, covering them with combustible material, setting them ablaze and then
allowing the fire to slowly burn down over a period of several hours). In modern pottery, the dense black colour is achieved through reduction firing (where the kiln atmosphere has insufficient oxygen for complete combustion i.e. more fuel than air).
2. Beaded flower bouquet made in Zimbabwe: Beads play an important role in African culture – from spiritual practice to initiation ceremonies. Virtually every African country has a complete cultural narrative revolving around beads. In Zimbabwe, bead making was generally a skill of older women. Today, young people are at the front and centre of driving innovation and creativity within this rich medium of expression.
3. Scrap metal wine bottle holder: Art can bring seemingly far off global conversations (such as environmental consciousness) onto the laps of individuals. It has the potential to make every world citizen responsible for the bigger picture. This is the reason why Peter –the artist behind the wine holder – creates his work. By upcycling all his creations, he is not only taking personal responsibility, but also challenging his customers to do the same.
4. Cotton napkins made in Tanzania: Cotton is one of Tanzania’s most important exports. More than 400,000 small scale farmers grow cotton, but their average yields per hectare are barely a quarter of the world average and
even smallholders in West Africa achieve yields twice as high. Furthermore, quality has deteriorated for many years, meaning Tanzania’s cotton is often rejected or trades at a discount on world markets. On the other hand, it is one of the only countries in Africa to produce organic cotton, a highly sought-after commodity the world over because of its fine and clean quality.

You will always dream about Diani. You will always dream about the white pristine beaches that sprawl endlessly before you, the sand gentle on your feet as you leisurely stroll by, taking in the magnificent view of the ocean. You will always dream about the beautiful palm trees that litter the Diani skyline ever so perfectly, swaying this way and that way as Diani’s gentle breeze whooshes by. You will always dream of the beautiful smiles of fellow travellers, some from the same place as you while others from lands so far away, here to live in the moment just like you.
You will always dream of your flight to Ukunda, floating above the white fluffy clouds before landing at Ukunda Airstrip, just five minutes’ drive away from Diani. You will check in at one of the luxurious beach hotels and even though very many things will excite you at the hotel, it’s the seafood that will excite you the most. Part of the reason you love travelling is so that you can experience different kinds of food and so seafood makes sense for you.
You will also make sure that every morning, you enjoy a scrumptious breakfast of fluffy pancakes and scrambled eggs and bacon and a cup of tea. It’s the kind of breakfast that will have you thinking of going back to the gym as soon as your vacation is over because you will literally feel the weight adding
on with every mouthful, but what’s the point of going on vacation if you can’t enjoy all the meals you want?
But your pallet will never forgive you if you do not, at least once, enjoy a plate of scrubs. Or open your mouth so wide before taking a bite of your burger. The beauty of travelling is that for once you won’t have to stress so much about what to eat as you would do at home. All you must do is point at the menu and a professional chef will make your culinary dreams come true.
But the beauty of Diani goes beyond the beautiful views and delicious meals. The hospitality extends to the friendly locals, always smiling and willing to help. The place is also home to many traditional Swahili villages. Here you get to learn about the unique culture of the Kwale people.
Diani will also appeal to the adventurous side of you, thanks to the many activities such as snorkelling, diving in the warm waters, riding on a glass-bottomed boat or simply experiencing the amazing wildlife such as Elephants and the Sable Antelopes at Shimba Hills National Reserve.
But it’s not just Diani that will take your breath away and have you dreaming of going back. Masai Mara will surprise you too with its rich wildlife. So will Tsavo, where if you listen keenly, you will hear elephants gossip. In every place you go, you leave a part of yourself and bring with you a part of it, making your life wholesome in every way.

WFP and other humanitarian agencies struggle to assist an influx of refugees reeling from conflict, climate and high cost of living.
BY MARTIN KARIMIJamilla Hassan’s family once lived off rich farmland in the Lower Juba region of south-west Somalia. But a severe drought from five poor rainy seasons left them staring at empty grain stores and dusty fields littered with carcasses of livestock, once their source of livelihood.
“We haven’t been able to harvest enough grain to feed ourselves for the past two years,” says Jamilla. “The land is bare and even the hardy sorghum – our staple crop – could no longer survive the dry spells.”
Last October, with skies showing no signs of rain and nothing left to feed their six children, she and her husband abandoned their home to make a perilous journey through conflict-hit parts of Somalia, in search of humanitarian assistance.
Today, she and her family count among more than 350,000 refugees living in Dadaab – including those who arrived in earlier waves. Currently the World Food Programme (WFP) supports about 600,000 refugees.
While heavy rains have finally arrived in Somalia and other countries in the Horn of Africa, the damage has been done. The region’s worst drought in more than four decades has killed millions of livestock and tens of thousands of people – and left an estimated 22 million others facing severe hunger.
At Dadaab, WFP’s support comprises of provision of cereals, pulses and vegetable oil. Through partners, WFP is also treating malnutrition in pregnant and breastfeeding mothers as well as children under five using fortified supplements.
“Extreme weather events are not slowing down – the population is exhausted from battling a debilitating drought, and now wading through life-threatening flood waters,” says WFP’s Borchers. “Now, more than ever, we need donors to step up and support people like Jamilla, who are enduring a climate crisis they did not create.”
WFP urgently requires US$45 million to meet the minimum food needs of all refugees in Kenya for the next six months. Food assistance to refugees continues thanks to the generosity of different partners. To help support WFP, share a meal with a family today by donating your bonga points through *126# and follow the prompts.
UNHCR, the UN Refugee Agency, leads international action to protect people forced to flee because of conflict and persecution. We deliver lifesaving assistance like shelter, food, and water; help safeguard fundamental human rights; and develop solutions that ensure people have a safe place to call home where they can build a better future.
To celebrate World Refugee Day 2023, UNHCR Private Sector Partnerships Africa hosted the second annual UNHCR World Refugee Day Charity Golf Tournament at Muthaiga Golf Club on 16 June. The tournament raised KES 3.6 million, which will help support the construction of furnished classrooms, improve students' health and hygiene by building sanitation facilities, provide necessary education kits, support refugee girls in school with menstrual hygiene products, and ensure refugee children have access to critically needed textbooks.
World Refugee Day falls each year on 20 June and celebrates the strength and courage of people forced to flee their home country to escape conflict or persecution. World Refugee Day 2023 focused on the power of inclusion and solutions for refugees, with the theme “Hope away from Home. A world where refugees are always included.”
The theme holds profound relevance as we strive to address the plight of the 110 million displaced people globally, with over 44 million finding refuge in sub-Saharan Africa.
UNHCR thanks The Village Market for their generous support of in-kind sponsorship of the Tournament in shopping vouchers worth KES 50,000. This is the second time The Village Market has provided in-kind sponsorship to the Tournament, which made our post-tournament reception a hit for participants.

It is often said that ‘we are what we eat’. The food we put into our body can influence how our body and brain works. Eating a variety of nutritious foods has a positive effect on both mental and physical health, making us more resistant to illness, feel more energetic and happier.
Talking about happy, do we know how food makes us happy?
Hormones – chemicals produced by different glands, travel in the body causing different reactions. Happy hormones, referred to as feel good hormones, promote general happiness, reduce pain sensations, put you in a good mood and promote the feeling of love.
Maintaining a happy and healthy lifestyle has become increasingly important in
