FOREWORD

WINNING COMBINATIONS This handbook provides a snapshot of the activities of Zeeland Seaports every two years. By the very nature of our diverse range of maritime activities, it cannot cover everything we do; but it should provide a good picture of how we are developing, our major focus areas and what has happened over the past two years since the last handbook. Zeeland Seaports has always tried to position itself to provide the best services for its stakeholders and customers. Our vision for the next five years is one of ‘Winning Combinations’ as we seek to encourage collaboration and clustering of the various industries and business sectors working in and around the port. Our new strategic master plan is, we hope, a blueprint for the successful future of Zeeland Seaports as we develop and expand our existing synergies and position ourselves to explore the new opportunities that the future will bring. We are seeing growth in most areas of our business – in the offshore sector, the bio sector, liquid bulk handling and food handling as well as in general cargo handling and breakbulk. Our strength lies in our diversity and our focus is on excellent services. The success of these pillars is the reason we are still the third-largest port in the Netherlands, handling 33 million tonnes of cargo in 2016. The development of the new locks at Terneuzen is symbolic of the future avenues of collaboration we are now discussing with the Port of Ghent. We are opening many doors to increased trade and the increased opportunity that both these ventures will bring. Our doors are always open for you. Welcome to Zeeland Seaports. INTRODUCTION

The main pillars of economic strength in the Zeeland ports are the offshore wind, oil and gas sectors; dry and liquid bulks; breakbulk; containers; ro-ro traffic; fresh food; and the ever-present chemical industry. The offshore wind sector has gone from strength to strength in less than a decade, with over 30 North Sea projects involving the construction of foundations for wind turbines. Liquid bulks, however, represent the biggest cargo by volume, with various international companies involved in providing tank storage in the Zeeland

Terneuzen can trace its history back to the 14th century. By 1460 it was a thriving market town with a small port, transhipping cargo to Ghent and Bruges. The opening of the Ghent-Terneuzen Canal in the first half of the 19th century was a turning point for Terneuzen, which grew rapidly as trade along the canal gained momentum. It also stimulated new industry

Although it has yet to develop a dedicated container terminal, Zeeland Seaports continues to handle up to 400,000 containers across its general purpose quays each year.

The concept of a dedicated terminal has been around for many years, but each time a definite project is considered, the economic situation stalls the process and the idea is shelved for a while longer. LIQUID BULKS

INVESTMENT AND EXPANSION IN LIQUID BULK SECTOR Liquid bulks account for a significant proportion of cargo throughput at Zeeland Seaports. Both Vlissingen and Terneuzen are home to international companies that provide huge amounts of storage capacity for chemicals, petrochemicals, oils, fertilizers and liquefied petroleum gas. Each year, some 12 million tonnes of liquid bulk traffic is handled by the various major operators. About two-thirds of this total is oil products and the remainder is chemicals. The port company is also looking at new initiatives to transport containers and other general cargo by barge to the main transhipment hubs of Rotterdam and Antwerp, instead of by truck.
