elcome to Coastal Virginia! Whether you are staying on the Southside (Norfolk, Virginia Beach, Portsmouth, Chesapeake), the Peninsula (Hampton, Newport News, Williamsburg), Smithfield, Suffolk or the Eastern Shore of Virginia, you are in the birthplace of the U.S. of A.
Coastal Virginia is a history buff ’s paradise. Native American communities resided here for generations before the “First Landing” of European settlers just 400 years ago. Throughout time, the people of the region have played a significant role in the advancement of trade, technology, exploration, civil and human rights, medicine, business, education and culture. And, the future of this region is even more exciting than the past. Located in the heart of the Mid-Atlantic, one of the most notable characteristics of the area is the abundance of water. In fact, the region takes its name from local waterways. From the U.S. Navy, the shipbuilding and repair industries, to international marine transportation, leisure cruising and the Port of Virginia, the area thrives on the Atlantic Ocean, Chesapeake Bay and many natural harbors and rivers. Our purpose in developing this publication is to give the reader a sense of the area they are visiting. The stories on the best places to eat, to shop, to visit as well as living here and local history are contributed by people that live and work in the region. We hope their stories enhance your stay. We truly hope you enjoy your stay in Coastal Virginia. Additionally, we hope www.LandmarksGreatDeals.com will help you to save money on dining, shopping, and attractions during your stay or for future visits. Please mention this book when you visit our sponsors, without whom this book would not be possible. Sincerely,

Coastal V Coastal Virginia, also known as Hampton Roads, covers cities in the southeastern region of Virginia and its lifestyle offers as much diversity as the origin of its original name. Taken from the 17th century English Earl of Southampton, Henry Wriothesley and the nautical term road, the name Hampton Roads offers residents and visitors everything from 29 miles of Atlantic Ocean beaches to historic early American culture. Whether you are here to work, play, or live the area offers options to suit any lifestyle at any stage of life. Home to over 1.6 million people, and host to many Colleges and Universities, Coastal Virginia encompasses the Southside cities of Chesapeake, Norfolk, Portsmouth, Suffolk and Virginia Beach while the Peninsula includes, Hampton and Newport News, Williamsburg, Yorktown and the counties of Gloucester, Isle of Wight, James City, Mathews, Southampton, Surry and York, and Currituck in North Carolina.
THE SOUTHSIDE Norfolk, Portsmouth, Virginia Beach, Chesapeake, and Suffolk Norfolk Located where the Chesapeake Bay meets the Atlantic Ocean, the 400-year old port city of Norfolk offers beauty, arts and entertainment, great healthcare, and the opportunity to stretch your wings and enjoy all that being alive truly means. Home to the world’s largest naval installation and a major commercial port for centuries, Norfolk is international in its scope and its vision. Travel is easy with Norfolk International Airport offering 200 flights daily, including connections to major hubs. Interstates make driving to and from Norfolk hassle-free. Norfolk features numerous restaurant and theater districts, waterfront dancing and dining, and upscale shopping. A “walkable” city, with attractions, shopping and restaurants only steps from major hotels; a destination for cruise, history and art lovers; and home to the U.S. Atlantic Fleet; Norfolk offers southern charm and city nightlife in a peaceful waterfront setting.
Virginia Beach Hampton Roads boasts more than 29 miles of beaches, Virginia Beach being the most infamous 14 miles. A year round destination, Virginia Beach is rich in history, culture, and natural beauty. Located at the mouth of the Chesapeake Bay, Virginia Beach is a bustling recreational port that supports a booming economy and is called home by nearly half a million people. With over 150 farms, a strong construction and real estate market and being a hot spot for Convention and Trade shows, Virginia Beach is also well known for its military presence. Of course, when it comes down to it, Virginia Beach is all about “the beach.” This beautiful city offers the perfect backdrop to simply slow down, relax, and take in the breathtaking Atlantic Ocean vistas.
Portsmouth Portsmouth offers the best of both worlds. It is home to the second busiest port on the east coast so you might be surprised to find tree lined streets that lead toward a scenic downtown. Its central location affords residents and visitors the luxury of taking advantage of all the amenities the region has to offer. Comprised of six historic districts, Portsmouth is an enclave of fine dining, antiques and specialty shopping, not to mention an abundance of outdoor activities. Rooted in three decades of history, there is so much to discover and uncover. Take your time or a lifetime to enjoy Portsmouth.

For a thrilling ocean adventure, hop on a surfboard and ride the curl. Rent a board and try it on your own or learn from the pros. A variety of lessons and camps teach water safety and surfing fundamentals. Then, embark on an ocean kayaking excursion to observe bottlenose dolphins as they feed, tail slap and jump among the ocean’s waves. During the winter, Virginia Beach offers winter wildlife boat tours during which visitors can observe humpback and fin whales migrating off the coast. Virginia Beach’s majestic marine life also beckons visitors indoors to the Virginia Aquarium & Marine Science Center, one of Virginia Beach’s most popular attractions, featuring over 800,000 gallons of aquatic environments. Harbor seals, sea turtles, rays, river otters and even Komodo dragons reside in the facility which also boasts over 300 interactive exhibits and a 3D IMAX® theater. Throughout the year, cultural celebrations, live musical performances and diverse festivals bring the sights, sounds and flavors of the world to the oceanfront. experience, enjoy hand picking your very own strawberries during the Annual Pungo Strawberry Festival. After a day full of activity, reward yourself with an amazing meal. Coastal cuisine is our forte - a rich culinary style with fresh seafood from the Atlantic Ocean and Chesapeake Bay mixed with organic produce straight from local Virginia Beach farms. This unique combination means the city’s nearly 300 restaurants, many locally-owned and operated; regularly serve fresh ingredients indigenous to our region. Some of the region’s specialties and local favorites include crab cakes, grilled mahi-mahi, yellowfin tuna, she-crab soup and striped bass (better known as “Rock Fish”). In fact, due to the abundance of striped bass, Virginia Beach is known as the “Striped Bass Capital of the World.” Virginia Beach also is famous for its Lynnhaven oysters. Holding historical significance, Lynnhaven oysters fed America’s earliest settlers and once were coveted around the world, served to presidents and royalty for their size, saltiness and gentle zing. Today, striped bass and Lynnhaven oysters are considered to be a local delicacy and are served in some of Virginia Beach’s best dining establishments by some of the resort city’s finest chefs. New to the region are the Coastal Food Tours of Virginia, a series of guided epicurean adventures with themed itineraries and mouth-watering cuisine. Try the three-hour Boardwalk & Beyond Food Tour for a sample of local favorites, or consider the multiday Harvest Feast Tour for an in- depth tasting of the region. Savvy Shopping
S
in Coastal Virginia
hopping can be sport or recreation for many when traveling. Whether you are searching for an original work of art, a luxury timepiece, a new pair of shoes or something jauntily nautical, you have a variety of options to shop ‘til you drop while visiting Coastal Virginia. In addition to tempting nationally-known stores, you will find a memorable group of exceptional locally-owned specialty shops. On the Southside, Norfolk and Portsmouth have older neighborhoods that offer vintage appeal and walk-about browsing. Ghent, Downtown Norfolk and Olde Towne Portsmouth are great for strolling down sidewalks, window shopping and enjoying the feel of these historic cities. Also on the Southside, Virginia Beach offers many beachfront shopping options on both Atlantic and Pacific Avenues. And the Beach has many smaller shopping areas away from the oceanfront for specialized and unique bargains. You will find unusual and interesting jewelry, fine furniture and gifts galore. Be on the lookout for incredible fine art by both local and nationally known artists. Try La Promenade and Hilltop on Laskin Road or the new Town Center on Virginia Beach Blvd. for those unique and specialty shops in a newer setting as well as shops along Shore Drive.
The jewelry experts at Long’s Jewelers are pleased to offer their integrity, reliability, reputation and gemological knowledge. In this way, you can feel confident that you are choosing fine jewelry that will last forever.
Peninsula visitors also have an array of shopping excitement. Phoebus and the Downtown area in Hampton both offer that historic stroll and Newport News’ Port Warwick and Hilton Village show off eclectic locally owed shops. What are some of those unique “will not find anywhere else” items? Nautical and Naval items, many found in area museum shops. The Mariner’s Museum, Nauticus, Virginia Aquarium and others search the world for those special ships, whales and educational toys that inspire memories of our historic ties to the sea. Of course, beach and resort themes from Virginia Beach to Ocean View and Buckroe Beach are plentiful but offer more than just a t-shirt or hat. Search these areas for specialized jewelry and clothing you will not find anywhere else. Small shops have creative license to provide a unique item you’ll always cherish.
Savor the Olive is a Specialty Store and a purveyor of artisan olive oils and vinegars. It offers Extra Virgin Olive Oils from the current harvest of the Northern and Southern Hemispheres.
Sailing and boating gear is readily available at the many marine shops. Rudee Inlet and Shore Drive in Virginia Beach have a wide array of both motor and sail boats and accessories. Willoughby Bay in Norfolk and Downtown Hampton also cater to the recreational boater for more Chesapeake Bay activities. If you are looking for great Mall-Shopping experiences you have a lot of great options throughout Coastal Virginia. On the Southside, MacArthur Center in Downtown Norfolk is a big mall happening in a small package. Lynnhaven Mall at the Beach has become a mecca for fashionistas. And both City Center in Newport News and Towne Center in Hampton are the newest malls to open in the market. Find your unique experience in shopping in Coastal Virginia for yourself, your friends and family. The shopping experience and the rewards you uncover will be a treasure hunt to remember! 24

The Shops at Hilltop SAVOR the OLIVE features a tasting room offering a large selection of premium extra virgin, first, cold press, unfiltered olive oils from around the world and Balsamic Vinegar from Modena, Italy. SAVOR the OLIVE, and its importer, partner with growers in the Northern and Southern Hemispheres to identify the latest harvests of olives. Each harvest is analyzed by the International Olive Council standards to ensure the consistency of quality and freshness. Once these oils are produced they are available to SAVOR the OLIVE’s customers within weeks. Sourced from the attics of Modena, Italy, SAVOR the OLIVE presents the highest quality of aceto balsamico condimento. The traditional Solera method, a process of transferring the cooked grape must through a series of larger to smaller wooden barrels over 12-18 years yields balsamic vinegar unmatched in the broad commercial market.

Health & Spas
in Coastal Virginia
Spa……hhh! There isn’t much that is as relaxing as a day at the beach, but sometimes you need a vacation from your vacation. The beaches of Coastal Virginia offer much more in the way of attractions than just sand and sun. Looking for a place to escape the hassles and stresses of day to day living? With our busy lives it is often difficult to find the time for rest and relaxation. We are focused on getting ahead, striving for success and looking for what opportunities tomorrow may bring. Since stress has been shown to be a contributing factor in numerous health problems and diseases the cost of our material success may be greater than we think. Spas provide a place for rest, relaxation, and a chance to de-stress. The Coastal Virgina beaches offer a number of tranquil Day Spas. Make your visit extraordinary and escape to an oasis of relaxation! Vacations are the perfect time to make time to nurture your body and soul with some much needed self care. Whether you are looking for a rejuvenating massage, a soothing facial, a detoxifying body treatment or an indulgent manicure and pedicure you will be sure to find what you need on the spa menu. Nearly all spas have custom day spa packages so consider devoting several hours to some much needed pampering. One of the most popular spa services is Therapeutic Massage. Massage not only feels incredible – it’s good for you too! Massage helps reduce stress and alleviate muscle tension. There are so many different kinds of massages to choose from! When in doubt, a basic Swedish relaxation massage is a good choice for anyone who has never experienced massage therapy. Massage aficionados may prefer a deep tissue massage to work out specific areas of muscle tension or a reflexology treatment which can address problem areas in the entire body from working out corresponding points on the feet. A Deep Tissue
massage is a great way to work out those sore muscles after a day’s golf outing. Couples massage has become a very popular spa service. It allows you to share the pampering experience of a relaxation massage with that someone special. Facials are a wonderful spa service designed to keep you looking your best. They offer a non-invasive anti-aging treatment opportunity for those who are looking for a more natural way to combat premature aging. Facials can be customized to address a variety of skin care concerns including acne, fine lines and wrinkles, hyper pigmentation, and rosacea just to name a few. Facials are divinely relaxing and a great way to keep your skin looking fantastic. Microdermabrasian and LED Light Therapy are some additional anti-aging skin care services that many spas offer. More aggressive skin care treatments can be found at day spas that provide medical aesthetic services such as Laser treatments and Botox. With such a great variety of options, you should be able to find a skin care service that meets your needs. Body treatments are skin care services that provide rejuvenation from head to toe. Detoxifying body wraps and exfoliating body scrubs will leave your whole body amazingly soft, smooth, and energized. Although fun in the sun is part of any great beach vacation, too much sun can lead to premature aging and major health concerns. Spray tanning has become a popular alternative with health conscious spa goers. Spray tan services can help you achieve a healthy beach glow without submitting yourself to the sun’s damaging rays. Spa manicures and Pedicures are an experience in indulgence with special pampering for hands and feet. A trip to the spa may be just what you are looking for on your next visit to the beach. With so much to offer, the Coastal Virgina day spas provide the perfect beach escape and may prove to be the highlight of your beach vacation. 31

The melting pot of the Coastal Virginia region has produced the most interesting of flavors. Like the people of the region, our dining reflects the influence of many cultures over a long period of time. Delicious meals are all tastefully presented in a wide array of culinary choices - the hard part is deciding which taste to try! Seafood is in abundance around the world but Coastal Virginia has the catch of the day for every seafood lover and serves it up fresh. With the Chesapeake Bay lapping at local shores, the Atlantic Ocean rolling in from the East and the many rivers and tributaries feeding the western and northern reaches, the fresh catch is very, very fresh! And Coastal Virginia chefs know where to find the freshest seafood around the world, flying in catches daily. Whether served sushi-style, southern-style or somewhere in between, you will discover local crab and fish, regional shrimp and scallop, and straight-off-the-plane oceangoing delights for your seafood cravings.
Did you say steak was more your style? Well, Coastal Virginia has the ability to serve it just your way - from grilled to broiled, fried to tartared - beef may very well be what’s for dinner tonight. Casual steakhouses abound and there are both local connoisseurs and nationally known chains serving steakhouse menus. Ah, pasta! Italian flavor was an early favorite in Coastal Virginia’s culinary adventure and both well seasoned and newer entrees into the realm of Italian cuisine have made their mark on the area. And pizza places abound! From the traditional to “California-style” there are lots of slices ready to bite into. Look for both time-honored and the new wave cuisine choices throughout the region. Brian Young and Michael Durbin, assistant managers, are there to make sure you have a wonderful experience. Giancarlo Catanese, the head chef and Steve Dunbar, the day chef, are still preparing our delicious food as they have from the beginning. Aldo’s would like to thank their customers for demanding us to grow and become a better restaurant over the last 25 years as they went from serving only pizza and pasta to a wide variety of steaks, veal, fresh local seafood, and fresh local produce and from a 25 bottle wine list to an exceptional award winning list of over 350 bottles from all over the world. Whatever your idea for great atmosphere, Coastal Virginia has it all! From contemporary to historic, from cosmopolitan to cozy, from intimate and romantic to simple and comfortable.
From downtown to the oceanfront, city center or harbor view, you will find most great restaurants just a short drive away. With chefs from around the globe converging here, and a world renown cooking school in your midst, you are in for a treat of cuisine, atmosphere and service! Most attire is acceptable, but it is always a good idea to call ahead! American. Chinese. Mongolian. Irish. Hungarian. Fusion. You’ll find a world of flavors in Coastal Virginia near and far. You won’t want to miss a single morsel of mouth-watering menu selections in the large restaurants or the small cafes in the region. Tea and crumpets? Sandwiches and soup? Steak and salad? Aberdeen Barn Steakhouse
Open Mon.-Sat. 3PM Sun 11:30AM
Family owned and operated by the Pramada family, the Aberdeen Barn Steak House has been serving locals and visitors to the Virginia Beach area for over 25 years. Originally founded in 1966 and purchased by Gus and Tasia in 1987, this premier steak house is now a local favorite as the tradition continues with their two sons, Yanni and Demetri, with their long term partner Panikos. Several of their signature steaks, such as the Cowboy Cut Delmonico, 18 ounces of premium aged Black A ngus, are served on a sizzling hot plate with a fresh vegetable, baked potato and homemade bread. The Barn serves the best slow cooked roast prime rib in coastal Virginia with au jus, horseradish, and your choice of sides. The Aberdeen Barn uses Sterling Silver Premium Beef. Sterling Silver Premium Beef has a reputation for the highest standard of quality. reat White Water Sports, LLC (GWWS). is Hampton Road’s premier water sports rental company. The business was inspired by the two family-oriented entrepreneurs tired of being disappointed by the poor customer service and lack of safety protocols they experienced from other companies around the world. Thus, GWWS was formed with commitment to making safety fun. GWWS patterns itself after companies like Disney, companies who understand the importance of the customer experience. The ability to provide an awesome, memorable, and safe experience for a 2 year old, or 82 year old, is a delicate balance which GWWS takes great pride in. Because of the standard of excellence it requires from its equipment and staff, GWWS has been fortunate to provide services for everything from the World Wrestling 54
Entertainment (WWE), Proctor & Gamble, Entercom Radio (Z104, 95.7 R&B, 2WD, The Point), NBA/NFL athletes, to family reunions, children’s birthday parties, or well deserving charity events. These experiences have combined to produce hundreds of pictures, videos, testimonials and rave reviews. Therefore, GWWS has been featured in the USA Today, Virginian Pilot, and currently ranks in the top 10 of “Things to Do” in Virginia Beach. GWWS provides unique experiences like Aqua Yoga (yoga while floating on a paddleboard), StandUp Paddleboards (SUP), HydroBikes, AquaCycles, plus traditional experiences like Jet Skis, Kayaks, Fishing Boats, and Canoes. GWWS is a pioneer in its industry, always looking for unique and exclusive experiences like the ever popular Jet Ski Dolphin Tour, and the Aquafly (via Flyboard), a new
high powered experience that allows customers to literally fly in the air across the bay. Great White Water Sports, LLC. operates directly from the beach, from its 4,000 sq. ft. facility, that features a 2,700 sq. ft. vacation rental upstairs (Xscape Loft) for its customers and clients, a 1,100 sq. ft. gift shop downstairs, which is also great for gatherings (The Water Sports Resort), and of course the breathtaking scenic waters of the Chesapeake Bay, which are scientifically proven to be calmer, warmer, and safer than the ocean. GWWS is the only water sports company where you can make it a day at the beach, as beach volleyball, and cornhole are included with any rental purchase. GWWS is centrally located, between the Peninsula/Williamsburg area and the Virginia Beach oceanfront, being only about 20 minutes from either.

The museum introduces visitors to more than 250 living species native to Virginia (including 12 that are listed as endangered or threatened) through exhibits, discovery centers and interactive hands-on exhibits. Opened in 1987 as the first living museum east of the Mississippi, the Virginia Living Museum is still a museum leader in its use of living exhibits (animals, plants, marine creatures, reptiles, amphibians, birds) to present its message –connecting people to nature through educational experiences that promote conservation. Each exhibit tells a story. Transport yourself to the steamy world of a cypress swamp, complete with an alligator. knowledgeable docent staff. Self-guided tours are also available to visitors who would prefer to browse the home and collection on their own. The Hermitage is also known for its beautiful grounds, which include twelve acres of semi-formal gardens, forest, and wetlands. The property is bordered on three sides by the Lafayette River, a tributary of the tidal estuary that threads through Hampton Roads. Both the wetlands and woodlands provide a natural habitat for hundreds of plants and animals, including a variety of waterfowl and migrating birds. The gardens feature 105 millstones, many of which reside in the Millstone Courtyard that greets visitors at the Museum entrance. Along the south side of the house is a colorful English-style perennial border coupled with a pathway leading into the waterfront lawn. A large southern magnolia tree stands on the east lawn overlooking a stone terrace highlighted by Edward McCartan’s bronze fountain, Girl Drinking From a Shell.
