If it shimmers, shines, or sparkles, it can be found at Park Place Jewelers—in the glass display cases and on the faces of the team behind the counters. Todd, Jill & Sophia Ferrante A fixture in the resort-area jewelry scene for over 18 years, Park Place Jewelers reflects owners Todd and Jill Ferrante’s commitment to selling exceptional jewelry and delivering outstanding customer service. Living their part of jewelry’s iconic role in life is something the Park Place family takes very seriously. “Jewelry has ties to so many of life’s major events—birthdays, engagements, wedding, anniversaries,” Jill said. “Jewelry is a business of memories new and old, family traditions and family heirlooms, whether it is a custom-crafted pendant or your grandfather’s watch or grandmother’s ring.” Park Place Jewelers has it’s roots as a resort jewelry purveyor offering seaside stylings to locals and tourists alike, but over the years it has grown into the premier destination for nautical treasures from designers Denny Wong and Steven Douglas to diamond engagement rings by Tacori, Simon G and Coast Diamond and everything in between. Its beautiful wall exhibits and display cases reveal bracelets, cufflinks, necklaces, engagement rings, wedding bands and watches, in a variety of finishes and textures, techniques and settings that feature precious or semi-precious stones, from alexandrite to watermelon tourmaline. Park Place Jewelers is your exclusive dealer of one of the hottest concepts in jewelry today, Alex and Ani bracelets. Alex and Ani believes in the power of positive energy. Their beautiful handmade bangle bracelets are infused with the power of positive energy and are intended to empower the wearer and reflect the unique qualities of the individual. Want an OC bead for your Pandora® bracelet? Park Place Jewelers has an extensive collection of Pandora® OC beads for capturing those OC memories. New this year is an entire section of the store devoted to Pandora® rings and jewelry. Their Original OC Hook® bracelet which began as a single bracelet has evolved into a phenomenal collection, which now includes rings, earrings, pendants and more available in sterling silver and solid gold. New for 2014, check out their Ocean City destination collection featuring genuine Ocean City sand encased in glass. Shop their two locations on the Boardwalk between 2nd and 3rd Streets at the Park Place Hotel and also in the White Marlin Mall in West Ocean City, next to Bed Bath & Beyond. Visit them online at parkplacejewelers.com and on Facebook at Park Place Jewelers Ocean City.

| OCEAN CITY 2014

T

he Ocean City Beach Patrol offers a Junior Beach Patrol Program for children ages 10-17. The program gives them the opportunity to experience some of the training and daily routine of real lifeguards, or Surf Rescue Technicians (SRTs) as we call them. The program is modeled after the duties and responsibilities of SRTs and focuses on the development of skills that enable children to enjoy the beach safely. It is designed to instruct boys and girls in the skills and techniques of beach safety, water safety, surf rescue and physical fitness. Registration questions may be directed to the Ocean City Recreation & Parks Department, 410-250-0125, or the Ocean City Beach Patrol, 410-289-7556. Many SRTs made their start in lifesaving in the Junior Beach Patrol. Many vacationers have been able to take advantage of this program for their children and it is offered in two types of sessions. A four-day academy is offered from Tuesday through Friday from 8:00 until 11:30 a.m. followed by afternoon sessions from 1:00-4:30. There is also a one-day introduction session, which takes place on Thursdays at 1 pm. The four-day academy consists of four levels that children can advance through,

learning new skills at each level, with a leadership training position available at the Crew Chief (fourth) level. Each summer that you come back to visit Ocean City, your child can move on to another level. Once a child has completed all levels, they can apply for a paid position as a Junior Instructor. The programs are repeated each week for six weeks, so there should be a JBP academy that will work during your stay in Ocean City. In addition to the Junior Beach Patrol Program, the Beach Patrol also provides special activities, programs, speakers and presentations to various groups such as scouts, church groups, camps, schools and civic organizations. They conduct these water safety presentations both in Ocean City and throughout the region. The safety training focuses primarily on drowning prevention and safety around the water and the beach. These presentations and hands-on activities are critical in allowing the Beach Patrol to fulfill their three-part mission of education, prevention and intervention. If you have a group interested in a beach safety presentation/program or speaker, contact the Beach Patrol at 410-289-7556 or email ocbp@ococean.com. | OCEAN CITY 2014

OCEAN CITY

Lifestyle

Waves of Generosity

D

uring its busy season, Ocean City becomes the second largest city in Maryland. As many as 250,000 people call it ‘home’ during their vacation. But the year-round population is only around 7,000 people. Many of them are families who built the resort, while others are former vacationers who are finally able to live their dream of moving to the beach. Add the relative distance from O.C. and the rest of the state, and you’ll find there’s a small-town attitude among the ‘full-timers.’ People know each other and believe that supporting their neighbors and giving back to their community is important. With that attitude, it’s no wonder that it seems there are as many charity events as there are seagulls hovering over the beach! And they support as many different causes as there are designs in a t-shirt shop! Spas host ‘pamper yourself ’ days to raise money for medical research; car and motorcycle clubs turn their donations over to the USO and therapeutic riding programs; chili cookoffs award bragging rights for both professional and amateur chefs while supporting hospice and kids’ athletic teams. One group recycles old cell phones and

gives the proceeds to Special Olympics. Time share and realty companies donate condos so families with critically ill children can enjoy a vacation. Sponsored dog walks and horseback rides on Assateague help humane societies take care of the needs of the animals in the area. The Poor Girls Open is a ladies only billfish release tournament benefiting breast cancer research typically hosted in Mid-August. There are also added entry levels for tuna and dolphin. This tournament was started by Capt. Steve Harman as a way for local waitresses and bartenders to have an affordable and fun competition while raising money for a very important cause. The tournament continues to grow with over 100 boats entering. Participation is not limited only to anglers as there are silent auctions, 50/50 tickets, T-shirts for sale, and other fun events helping to raise money for breast cancer research. In the past 3 years alone, the Poor Girls Open has raised over $100,000 that was donated to the American Cancer Society. For more info log onto www.bahiamarina. com/tournament/poor-girls-open.cfm

reathe in the fresh salt-tinged air to your heart’s content and bask in warm vitamin-D laced sunshine while taking an invigorating walk in soothing sand with lapping waves over your sore feet. In fact, that salty, humid breeze may help your allergies or asthma with moisture-laden, negative ions that may open bronchial passages and, with deep breathing, help improve circulation. This definitely beats purchasing the salt inhalers at the local drug store! Vitamin D research is all the craze. Some doc’s swear we don’t get enough and a key source is, you guessed it, the sun! When the sun’s UV-B rays touch the skin, our bodies naturally make Vitamin D. Experts say 10-15 minutes of mid-day sun (it has to be high enough to penetrate the atmosphere) is actually good for you. But moderation comes into play here. Skin cancer is nothing to play around with so don’t stretch that 15 minutes into a 1 hour siesta in the full sun. Be careful to cover up and, for gosh sakes, use that great smelling sun tan lotion. A good broad-spectrum sunscreen of at least 15 SPF should be applied liberally at least 20 minutes before expo-

sure (most people don’t apply enough… spread it on!) When walking the Boardwalk or one of the myriad of walking trails along the shorelines, here are a few simple pointers to keep you without sprains and strains during your vacation. First, wear something more supportive than flip flops! It won’t mess up your tan to wear a good pair of sneakers with socks. And stretch a bit before taking those full strides: side stretches, back legs, head over the arms…you know the drill. And be aware of what’s going on around you, especially on the Boardwalk. Bikers, skateboarders, roller blade folks may be sharing the same space so keep an eye out for your fellow adventurers. At Boardwalk Segways, they believe everyone should be able to create a new Ocean City memory on the boardwalk. Segways are the first human powered transport and are a fun and easy way to travel the whole 37 blocks that make up the boardwalk without getting yourself exhausted. They are suitable for most ages and skill levels and are an eco-friendly way to travel and tour. For those with mobility challenges, Board-

walk Segways also offers wheelchairs and power-scooter rentals, as well as strollers for touring the attractions accessible from the boardwalk. New to the line-up, Boardwalk Segways now offers beach wheelchairs, so everyone can have the full Ocean City experience! Speaking of the beach, how about sand between the toes? A great thing! If you’re out for a stroll, enjoy the leisurely pace and natural exfoliating of sand. If you’re in for a more intense workout, find those sneakers or a good supportive sandal (like Teva’s). And while you’re walking in the sand, listening to waves make that swooshing sound, try to just relax, it’s one of the best benefits of healthy living at the beach! The beach feels like vacation, but that doesn’t mean you can’t get a good workout. World-Famous Boardwalk Delights All Ages!

O

cean City’s Landmark Boardwalk is a three-mile promenade by the sea whose timeless appeal has been attracting vacationers for generations. A traditional wooden walkway, bordered on the east by Ocean City’s beautiful beach, offers spectacular views of the Atlantic Ocean. To the west, miles of unique eateries, one-of-a-kind shops and amusements and accommodations in which family members of all ages will enjoy. As you approach the southern end of the boardwalk, the smells of caramel popcorn and cotton candy will awaken your senses as you notice enjoy an exciting line-up of amusement rides, games and arcades. From the antique carousel to a thrilling roller coaster ride, the attractions beckon all ages. For those looking to enjoy a spectacular view of the

island, try the Ferris wheel on the pier, then test your skills at the many games found along both the southern end of the Boardwalk and pier. During your stroll down the Boardwalk you will enjoy a kaleidoscope of colors and sounds as street performers entertain the public and kites of all shapes and sizes soar overhead. Free concerts occupy the beach on North Division Street, just steps from the Boardwalk, every Wednesday evening during July and August. At the Boardwalk’s northern end at 27th Street, free movies and the Family Beach Olympics are held on the beach on selected evenings during the summer. Ocean City residents and visitors are not the only ones who think Ocean City is the best place in the world to be, as the Ocean City Boardwalk has drawn numerous accolades over the years.

Sherman’s Travel named it one of the “10 Best U.S. Boardwalks” in 2010. Reader’s Digest named it “One of America’s “Best Seaside Strolls” in 2006. USA Today ranked Ocean City “One of the 10 Great Places to have Fun on the Boardwalk.” The Travel Channel noted it as “One of the “Best Boardwalks in America,” and just last year Tripadvisor Travelers’ Choice ranked Ocean City’s Boardwalk one of the “Top 10 Amusement Parks and Boardwalk in the U.S.” If you are looking for another way to experience the sights and sounds of Ocean City’s Boardwalk, hop aboard the Boardwalk tram. The tram operates from the Inlet to 27th Street, a distance of almost three miles. The Ocean City Boardwalk is certainly an experience that we hope all of our visitors enjoy!

Ocean City Attractions

Jolly Roger’s

Amusement Park and Pier 50 years of Thrills and Chills

A

lot of things have changed over the last 50 years. Cell phones dominate everyone’s daily routine instead of the old land lines, Social Media connects our personal lives instead of quality conversation and fast food has taken the place of a great home cooked meal. Yet, some things never change. And when you think of the Ocean City beach, these two Attractions Icons always come to mind.

In 1964 Charles “Buddy “ Jenkins and Arnold Palmer met…Jenkins had just acquired a large parcel of bayside property in Ocean City MD and Palmer-the reigning “King” of golf at the time was developing Driving Ranges and Miniature Golf courses. Jenkins purchased a franchise and in July 1964 opened the Arnold Palmer Putting Course and Driving Range. The following year, he added 10 Amusement Rides and over the next several years Jolly Roger Park established itself as a major tourist attraction in the seaside resort. 28

| OCEAN CITY 2014

In 1974, Jenkins acquired the rights to the iconic Ocean City Pier and with a multi-million dollar renovation added new rides and attractions. Over the years, Jolly Roger Parks added a wide array of attractions-a full scale Amusement Park, several live shows, a petting zoo but most importantlySpeedworld-now home of one of the largest collections of go carts and tracks in the country…And Jolly Roger’s crown jewel, Splash Mountain Water Park-arguably one of the best water parks in the region. As Jolly Roger Parks celebrate their 50th Anniversary this summer, this family owned and operated Amusement Park has become a tradition of family fun for generations of tourists. And it’s 35 acres comprise the best of nostalgic rides and new cutting edge attractions… it has truly become an Ocean City landmark

Trimper’s

HAUNTED HOUSE W

hether you come to relax or play, Ocean City has always showcased the perfect balance between old and new. Timeless favorites like Thrasher’s fries are as much a draw as the hottest new club on Coastal Highway. Nowhere is the blending of nostalgic and modern more celebrated than at Trimper’s Rides. When founder Daniel B. Trimper moved his large family to Ocean City in 1892, he envisioned the possibilities for a popular tourist destination in the then-remote seaside town. The family’s first purchase was the Seabright Hotel which was rebuilt and expanded as the Windsor Hotel. While wife Margaret ran the hotel, Daniel soon added amusements to his property, offering musical acts, boxing and an early merry-go-round. In 1912, Trimper purchased the “Pride of the Boardwalk”; the Herschell-Spillman menagerie carousel. This glittering gem has delighted visitors young and old for over a century. A few of the children’s rides that surround the carousel, such as the Fairy Whip, were purchased by Daniel to attract families to his resort. Several times in these early days rough weather forced the Trimpers to rebuild. The storm of 1933 destroyed part of the Trimper’s property, but that created the inlet that came to be of great benefit to the town and the fishing industry. The aftermath also built up the beach in front of their property offering protection from future storms. With each new structure came more concessions and attractions until the south end of the boardwalk became the amusement center for family entertainment it remains today.

Daniel’s grandson Granville D. Trimper was raised in the family tradition of providing top-notch amusements for the guests of the town they loved. When his turn came to make a mark in the family business, Granville chose to add a dark ride in the space that had once been the Windsor Theater. In 1964, he hired designer Bill Tracy of Outdoor Dimensional Display Co. to create the second of Trimper’s iconic attractions, The Haunted House. Celebrating its 50th anniversary this season, the award-winning Haunted House is now more than ever a must-see destination for visitors to Ocean City. Optical illusions, other-worldly sensations, and tableaus of horror served with a pinch of humor greet the riders of this unique attraction. Like the town it calls home, the ride has seen many changes over the years. During the winter of 1988, Granville reimagined the ride adding a second story using track and stunts from a closed Tracy attraction making it one of the longest dark rides in the industry. Major restoration and enhancements were done to the ride again in 2011. Stunts have come and gone, replaced by the latest in scare effects to keep the ride fresh and exciting without losing its signature style. With each season comes the opportunity to make memories for the thousands of visitors to the park each year. The Trimpers are proud to continue the tradition as favorite attractions reach new milestones and new generations of guests enjoy the best of the old and the new that Ocean City has to offer. | OCEAN CITY 2014

acationers don’t normally plan trips to Ocean City for the shopping, but Ocean City delivers. Coastal Highway is lined with beach gear superstores, but Ocean City’s unique environment supports an artistic subculture that is bursting through the city’s tie-dyed and airbrushed seams. In the tradition of Hawaiian surf culture, where art, lifestyle, and music are inspired by nature, Ocean City surfing and water sports have inspired original surf art that can be found on and off the beaten path. Tucked away in a shopping center along Route 589 south of Ocean Pines is a trendy new boutique where shoppers receive one-on-one attention from the owner; Gina March. This trendy new fashion stop, BomShell Boutique, offers clothing and accessories for women of all ages including personal advice on a first-name basis. And, when all your shopping works up an appetite, be sure to grab a tasty Mediterranean Kabob & a cup of delicious coffee from Cafe Caffe! Before heading out of town, there are a few more reasons to hit the shopping scene one more time. The Kite Loft offers some of the most magical wind socks, kites, and beach toys in town - or anywhere. The Kite Loft is where the fun begins; a world of brilliant colors, tinkling wind chimes, and of course - lots of kites! Finally, we suggest one more stroll up the boardwalk. Remember the office Christmas parties and “just because” gifts for the kids when you walk past the funny little crab ornaments and boxes of specialty candy. Gifts from vacation tell loved ones that you want to share a little part of your good times with them.

So once you’ve had your fill of fun in the sun... Get out and shop OC style!

Located on 94th Street (just next to the water tower bearing its logo) this state of the art facility is the home of the Art League of Ocean City; the area’s non- profit arts organization. Dedicated to promoting the visual arts in the Ocean City area, the Art League recently celebrated its 50th year anniversary. In March of 2013, the new building opened through a partnership with the Town of Ocean City, State of Maryland and Worcester County. Since then it has become a place where people come together to create, explore, experience and connect through the arts. Step inside the building and be inspired by the gorgeous blown glass chandelier. Containing over 100 pieces of colored glass and measuring 9 feet tall and 6 feet wide, it is the centerpiece of the gallery spaces. F From NY to OC ASAP!

rom pickles and matzo ball soup before your meal, to babka, bread pudding, or New York style cheesecake after your meal, Rosenfeld’s Jewish Delicatessen offers everything that you remember seeing, smelling and tasting in the traditional Jewish delicatessens of many years ago. Founded by a third generation restaurateur, Rosenfeld’s is passionate about bringing this popular ethnic food back to the Maryland and Delaware shore after many, many years. All of the corned beef, brisket and turkey is cooked on premise, and all of the salads and huge desserts are homemade, fresh from our kitchen to you. Our knishes and smoked fish come from New York. Our Reubens have become legendary since our opening, and our kosherstyle sandwiches start with a half-pound of meat, going up to two pound portions for those with extra-large appetites. Our goal is to have the best “Jewish food museum” found anywhere. Whether you are craving good old fashioned pickles, knishes, blintzes, latkes, matzo ball soup, matzo brei, huge kosher-style sandwiches, chopped liver, whitefish, herring, chicken in the pot, stuffed cabbage, bobka, cheesecake, or wonderful New York style egg creams made with Fox’s U-Bet syrup, you’ll find all of this and more at Rosenfeld’s. We’re serving the deli food that you remember from your youth, with the sights, smells and tastes that you’ve been missing for so long. There is plenty of free parking on 63rd Street, and in two marked lots on the bayside block of 63rd Street.

At Rosenfeld’s, you can eat inside our deli, sit in our enclosed and covered porch, or sit in our uncovered picnic area. All of our sit-down menu items are also available for carry-out. Likewise, we have a full deli department, and our “by the pound” menu allows you to bring home our meats, cheeses, salads, lox and other smoked fish by the pound, as well as purchasing our breads by the loaf, our desserts either by the piece or as a whole, and our various grocery items in packaged form. We also have Jewish dog treats and cat treats for the special pets in your life who might be craving that special Jewish deli experience. Should you have a house full of family or guests, we also have a full catering menu, offering many types of platters. You can also customize your own special platter with us. We deliver all catering platters free of charge. More than 60,000 customers visited the deli in the first year of operation. Owner Warren Rosenfeld and General Manager Tammy Dubin, as well as all of the others associated with Rosenfeld’s Jewish Delicatessen, are extremely passionate about bringing traditional, Jewish, old-world favorites to the public, whether locals, parttime residents or those on vacation. Come join us and treat your belly to our Jewish deli! We look forward to seeing you, and look forward to sharing with you all of the foods from your youth, and that comprise the best of your food memories.

Baltimore’s Best comes to the Shore

T

he Abbey Burger Bistro in Federal Hill decided to move East and took over the old Olive Tree restaurant on 126th & Coastal Hwy behind the Holiday Inn. This large 300 seat restaurant, with it’s enormous kitchen, outside deck, and room to grow outward as well as upward seemed to be the perfect venue for the group’s Ocean City aspirations. The more they thought about it, the more they realized the OC food scene had a serious void that could be filled by bringing their prized Baltimore City concept to the beach, and the OC Abbey Burger Bistro was born. The original Abbey in Federal Hill was founded in 2008 and quickly asserted itself as a Baltimore Burger institution. It’s gourmet burgers are known for fresh ingredients and innovative options, and are renowned not only across the city, but across the state. In the spring of 2013, on the eve of their Ocean City expansion, The Abbey outlasted 15 other burger joints to win Baltimore’s Burger Bracket Championship, as voted

46

| OCEAN CITY 2014

on by readers of City Paper. Less than a month later USA Today dubbed The Abbey as having the best burgers in all of Maryland. These same award winning burgers are now being grilled on 126th Street.

The Abbey’s owners are as dedicated to their beer list as they are to their menu. The spacious bar houses 48 taps of the finest craft beer from around the region and over 100 bottles of local and national favorites.

The Abbey’s acclaimed concept is simple: gourmet burgers at reasonable prices served in a casual, yet classy, environment. Create your own specialty burger from The Abbey’s expansive list of ingredients. And whether you opt for a regular beef, chicken, or turkey burger, or something more exotic like kangaroo, bison, or Kobe, you can rest assured your patty is handcrafted from meat that is ground on premises. The Abbey relies on daily deliveries from local farms to ensure the freshest burgers in existence. Gourmet burgers may be the star of the show yet their buns are also freshly baked, the fries are hand cut and the sides are made from scratch! Their innovative, hand-spun milkshakes are spiked for an adult take on an old childhood favorite.

The OC Abbey Burger Bistro will offer live entertainment, including performances on the scenic deck outside as well as inside the gorgeous restaurant. They offer an arcade and game room to keep the kids occupied while the parents enjoy the ultimate burger and beer experience. Great burgers, great beer, and great service in a family friendly atmosphere, The OC Abbey Burger Bistro has a recipe for success that should yield years of longevity and certainly will leave your mouth watering for more. Move over crabs, you just got some serious competition.

Casual Dining . . . Refined

L

ongboard Café, located in the fabulous new Town Center midtown boardwalk at 67th St, has opened to rave reviews for food, ambience, cocktails and service. What makes this surf-themed bistro stand out is its unique & diverse menu that appeals equally to the casual diner as well as sophisticated palate. For lunch and lite fare you can choose from gourmet burgers, real Baja-style tacos, innovative sandwiches & paninis or entrée-sized salads. Dinner selections include local fresh fish prepared in a variety of styles and offerings such as duck breast with raspberry-jalapeno glaze and duck-confit hash, pan-seared Ahi with Thai chili & Asian slaw and crab-stuffed artichoke bottoms, to name just a few. “Every item on our menu is about preparation and flavor” says owner Rick Vach. “We make everything from scratch and that is reflected in the quality and popularity of our food. All of our sauces, salsas, dressings, etc. are meticulously house-made. We hand-patty our burgers from a blend of chuck, brisket and short-rib. We buy fish from local sources daily and our bread is freshbaked from a local bakery. From there, we created a menu that isn’t the typical resort-style food. We have things you

We even have a section of the menu called “Gotta Eat your Veggies” which features our famous Wrinkled Green Beans (flash-fried and tossed in a secret sweetsoy sauce) and Mexican Street Corn (grilled and rolled in chipotle aioli and cotija cheese). Our chef makes fabulous risottos, our Grilled Lamb Lollypops are topped with an amazing sweet-cilantro pesto, and we are often told we make the best Cream Of Crab Soup anywhere”. Open for lunch and dinner with allday lite fare and kids menus, Longboard recently expanded with a new outdoor deck for al-fresco dining. Surfing is defined as “the art of riding waves”

by Brian Stoehr

M

any people come to the area beaches and enjoy the waves throughout the year. Sometimes the waves are small and gentle, sometimes they are rough and huge, while others can actually rank up there with some of the world’s best surf breaks. Yep, its true... The Delmarva shores can be home to world class waves. I’m not saying it happens often, but when it does, many locals can honestly say “there’s no place like home.” My career has taken me all over the world and allowed me to ride waves of every shape and size. I know as a professional wave rider, I can say when the wind and weather conditions are just right, the waves can be close to perfect. After spending my professional career exploring ideal waves all over, I know I would rather live right here than anywhere. We have an ideal mix of wave conditions for all types of wave riders and all types of skill levels. It’s ideal to learn for most, but still great for those trying to perfect their skills as well. Typically (not always), the waves are smaller and the water is nice and 50

I’ve spent a lot of time teaching people how to ride waves the last few years and there are a few little tips I have to make a big difference. My biggest tip, use the right equipment. Everyone always wants to learn on boards that are just too small for them. The only way to learn is on a bigger board. My second tip, take a lesson! We can shave days, weeks or ever years off of the typically trial and error of beginning surfing or wave riding of any kind. id you know that the Ocean City and Delaware Beaches Golf region—from Lewes to Ocean City—boasts over 20 clubs? And that most of those are rated 4-5 star s by Golf Digest? No handicaps here! The GlenRiddle courses have a history all their own and not all about golf. The two courses, Man O’War and War Admiral are named after the winning race horses housed in the stable that is now the club house for the club. “Man O’War is a public course and is in the links style like you’d see over in the British Isles,” said club Golf Professional, Rob McDonald. “The War Admiral course is parkland-style, designed by Joel Weiman in collaboration with design consultant and

2003 U.S. Open Champion, Jim Furyk, and will become private as membership increases,” continued McDonald. Just a short drive from Ocean City, Deer Run Golf Club offers golfing recreation for the entire family, from juniors to pros, moms, dads, and kids. The green sizes are huge, challenging golfers with varied lengths ranging from 110 to 595 yards. Deer Run also boasts the finest golf teaching facility in the Ocean City area, featuring 5,000 square feet of driving range, target greens, and a 30 yard measured fairway to give the practice enthusiast plenty of diversity. The serene setting makes this a true golfer’s paradise.

Baywood Greens, in Long Neck, Delaware, is described as the “Augusta of the North,” with meticulously manicured woodside and waterside nines with eight timbered bridges and 27 acres of man-made ponds, two tunnels, and over 200,000 flowers, plants, shrubs, and trees. Located just minutes away from the Delaware Beaches, Baywood Greens is an exclusively public championship golf course with the most scenic and spectacular golf on the Delmarva Peninsula. The Angler Resturant is recognized as one of Ocean City’s oldest and finest

cean City has a long-standing reputation for great dining destinations. Many of the main stay restaurants that are a favorite among locals and visitors alike have served the community for many decades now. One of the oldest family run restaurants in Ocean City is the Angler restaurant just under the route 50 bridge on the OC side, celebrating their 75th Anniversay. Around the turn of the 20th century, Charles Rollins Bunting, great-grandfather of the present Buntings, purchased the property where the Angler Restaurant now stands. At that time there was no dock, only marsh grass through which the first Buntings pulled their sail bateaux and rowboats to shore. While the elder Bunting worked on a fish pound boat, his five sons began the small fishing business. As business grew and a dock was needed, the Buntings were issued the first Ocean City dock building permit. Lumber was brought in from West Ocean City by a scow, for the only access to the island other than by water was over a narrow railroad bridge. When completed, the Bunting dock became a favorite relaxation spot. Local residents and visitors alike enjoyed sitting out over the quiet bay waters. In the winter of 1934, his son, William, returned to Ocean City from North Car66

olina. A year later, he bought the house and property adjoining his father’s dock. There he built a small 20’ x 20’ building where he sold fishing bait, cool sodas and rented small boats. His wife, Louise, an enterprising young woman, started selling homemade pies. It soon became obvious that they needed to serve breakfast, lunch and dinner. Today, five generations and 75 years later the Angler features fresh seafood dishes to contemporary cuisine served in a recently remodeled dining space and outdoor patio. Perhaps the most famous seafood restaurant in Ocean City is Phillips. The story of Phillips dates back to 1914 as a quality-driven, family-owned company on a small island in the Chesapeake Bay called Hooper’s Island. Augustus E. Phillips established the first seafood processing plant on Maryland’s Chesapeake Bay and from that spawned a nearly 100 year history for Phillips. Chapter two begins in 1956 when son Brice Phillips and his wife, Shirley, took the surplus of crabs from the plant to a small resort town on the shore and opened the first “crab shack” in Ocean City, MD. That first location has evolved into Phillips Seafood Restaurants which now operates seven high-volume restaurants in the Eastern United States, as

well as a growing network of franchises in major airports around the country. Today, their company remains familyowned and operated by three generations of the Phillips family serving al a carte menus overflowing with fish, crab, and other denizens of the Chesapeake and Atlantic waters. BJ’s on the Water is known for their amazing bay front view. During the day, this family friendly restaurant serves up seafood, sandwiches, burgers, and steaks. When the sun goes down, the atmosphere changes, but the food doesn’t. BJ’s prides itself in offering their full menu until the kitchen closes, which isn’t until 1:30 am every day. A favorite among locals, from happy hour to late night, BJ’s offers a fun, casual atmosphere on the water with nightly entertainment. Madelyn and Billy Carder have owned and operated BJ’s on the Water Restaurant for over 35 years. The Carder’s strive to maintain their standard of quality and have succeeding in earning a loyal following in Ocean City. Proud to be an integral part of the beach experience, the Carders have humbly given back to the community for many years. Award-winning recognition, happy customers, and a loyal local following are all indicators of the rich history at BJ’s on the Water.

Nicks House of Ribs serving up succulent ribs Dine under the Stars in Galaxy 66’s New Skye Bar!

Nick’s Original House of Ribs has served up “incredibly good food” to Ocean City’s hungry diners for over three decades. An iconic landmark near the Delaware line, this quintessentially Ocean City restaurant continues to thrive, serving up American fare with great, consistent food and service. Nick’s is synonymous with their baby back ribs, but they are also famous for their jumbo lump crab cakes, prime rib, barbecued shrimp, and Nick’s fabulous onion loaf. The onion loaf is a dish with a following almost as loyal as the restaurant’s. The Onion Loaf appetizer is a decadent block of frazzled onions that is meant to be shared with friends, serving 2-3 people. Nick’s sports bar, with plenty of TV’s to keep up with your favorite sports, is the perfect place to gather with friends and the spacious dining room is a great venue for bringing the whole family together. Their hearty meals are complemented by a full bar, serving up a range of wines, beers, and cocktails. With a casual, relaxed atmosphere, Nick’s Original House of Ribs has something everyone will enjoy. Fager’s Island Restaurant and Bar is another award-winning waterfront Ocean City landmark, known for their famous views of the sun setting over the bay with the rousing melody of Tchaikovsky’s 1812

Overture drifting over the deck. After the sun sets, Fager’s really comes to life with live bands, deck parties, and special events. Fager’s Island is a popular destination featuring impeccably prepared American and Pacific Rim cuisine. Also enjoy their outdoor decks and bar with live entertainment and 32 wines by the glass. It is a place where the joy of food & the presence of the table are of utmost importance. At Fager’s Island, the food is delicious, the drink specials are hot, and the dance floor is always full. During the summer season, the Bayside Skillet’s waterfront deck stays open all night offering a relaxing atmosphere to nibble, dine, or enjoy a cocktail as the sun sets. Their pet friendly bayfront deck has a full service bar with the O’s, Nats, and Phillies games accompanied by lots of ice cold beer. Try one of their Very Berry Sangrias, their signature “Skilletinis”, or create your own magic with the best freshly squeezed orange juice in the world. Hangout and indulge in breathtaking views of the sunset while they deliver handcrafted Eastern Shore Style Crab Cakes, slow roasted Blackened Prime Rib, or Coretez’s secret Crab Mac ‘N’ Cheese. The Bayside Skillet creates new specials every day, such as their Jumbo Lump Crab Cocktail; 16 ounces of jumbo lump crab sautéed in white wine, garlic, and butter which offers all the joys of eating crabs without the mess!

For a dining experience that’s out of the this world, discover Galaxy 66 Bar & Grille and the newly renovated rooftop Skye Raw Bar located on 66th Street in the heart of Ocean City. Owned and operated by proprietors Roger Cebula and Tammy Patrick-Cebula, Galaxy 66 is a fun and funky atmosphere where you can relax after a day at the beach, celebrate an important occasion or a late night spot to see and be seen. The newly expanded Skye Bar, opened earlier this year, is truly a gem on the Ocean City skyline. It is a must during your stay to check out the newest scene at the beach. Enjoy breathtaking views of the city, the bay and the ocean while sipping a Saturn Squeeze or Big Bang made with grapefruit and oranges squeezed right before your eyes. The Skye Bar is open for lunch, happy hour, dinner and late night. Come in off the beach for happy hour drink specials and enjoy amazing acoustic acts or join us for a casual dinner or late evening drinks and appetizers. In the past few decades, many things have changed in Ocean City. New businesses have come and gone. For the restaurants above, the years have only seen an improvement as their dedicated staff serve loyal customers the best they have to offer.

Berlin MARYLAND

America’s Coolest Small Town

B

erlin’s citizens—and fans from around the U.S. and beyond— helped get the town nominated last fall when Budget Travel solicited suggestions from tens of thousands of online readers. The editors tallied up the nominations, added a dash of editorial discretion for regional and cultural diversity, and came up with a list of 15 finalists—cool burghs from Upstate New York to the foothills of the Sierra Nevada Mountains in California, from northern Colorado to the Everglades, and, of course, the Maryland shore. Now, after more than a month of online voting, Berlin, MD (population 4,563), has earned the title of “Coolest Small Town in America!” Truly a treat away from the beach is a small, quaint, vibrant, Victorian-influenced town just minutes from the Ocean City boardwalk. Take a little time to get away and enjoy Berlin, Maryland. The small part makes Berlin easy to navigate and walk around. The quaint part comes from over 40 buildings noted in the National Register of Historic Homes. The vibrancy is due to the lively arts and entertainment district that continues to develop along the tree-lined streets. And Victorian architecture makes for a beautiful setting.

Berlin (historically pronounced BURLun) was a crossroads of the Shore and entertained business folks, hunters and, of course, those on the way to the small area called Ocean City. Past prosperity is evident in the well-cared for homes and businesses throughout the area. Recently, local business leaders have revitalized the town with a State-designated Arts & Entertainment District where music, art, and crafts are a vital part of the community. Among Berlin’s dynamic Arts & Entertainment District, is Jeffrey Auxer Designs. With old-skill techniques and 80

innovative creativity, this studio demonstrates and displays fine blown glass creations. Not only that, Jeffery Auxer Designs offers classes as well as home décor, vessel sinks, lighting, hanging plates and bowls. Commissioned pieces are welcomed. When you stroll along and take in the Victorian architecture you’ll be sure to find some tasty restaurants on and off the beaten path. A one of a kind, Rayne’s Reef is a historic old-fashioned soda fountain established for over 100 years nestled within Berlin’s town center. The landmark eatery has been the backdrop for notable movies such as Runaway Bride. Berlin has some fantastic shopping! Stuarts’ Antiques and Fine Jewelry is always an adventure, with a wide variety of antiques, gifts, and collectibles. From fashions, accessories and jewelry to oil paintings, pottery and home décor, there is something for everyone waiting at Stuarts’ Antiques seven days a week. At Bruder Hill you’ll find a fabulous upscale consignment area where you can save on high-end clothing, shoes, and handbags! Pocomoke City: Maryland’s Friendliest Town on the Eastern Shore

A

‘Living Museum,’ a Charming Downtown, and Cypress Swamp Adventures Make Pocomoke Worth Discovering

Waving a welcome to visitors and residents, a huge American flag flutters high above this charming lower Eastern Shore town. And lately, there’s enough going on—a new discovery center, a refurbished theater and a river tour boat. There’s more than ever here to delight families and travelers of all ages. The Place to Start: The Delmarva Discovery Center The newest addition to Pocomoke, dubbed “the friendliest town on the Eastern Shore,” is the Delmarva Discovery Center. This living museum has a prime spot just a few feet away from the Pocomoke River and the town’s pictureperfect drawbridge. Stow your car here and spend the day exploring Pocomoke by foot. Inside the center, you’re far more than a spectator. Go ahead and touch, listen, experiment, and explore. It’s a hands-on experience that offers a fun and fasci88

| OCEAN CITY 2014

nating look at the Pocomoke River, its history, ecology, and role in the lives of folks in this region for the past 300 years. Explore a Native American exhibit, a beaver dam big enough for the kids to climb into, an underwater world in the 6,000 gallon aquarium, climb aboard a re-creation of a steamboat, feel what it’s like to tong for oysters or hoist full-size sails in a gale-force wind. It’s truly an adventure in learning. Nature and Recreation Stroll the town docks for views of sailboats and powerboats. A stone’s throw from the bridge is Cypress Park with picnic tables, a playground and tennis courts. Stretch your legs on the fourmile nature trail that meanders through swamp and woods along the river’s edge. Boaters can tie up at the Pocomoke town docks for free the first two days (just call or stop by city hall at 410-9571333, 101 Clarke Street). Golfers can head to Winter Quarters Municipal Golf Course, a nine-hole, par 70 course on the banks of the Pocomoke, close to downtown.

Downtown History and Culture Originally settled in the 1600s, the town has several homes on the National Register. Take a tour of the stately Costen House and Rose Garden, home to the town’s first mayor. A few blocks away, the Sturgis One Room School Museum offers a different perspective on history. Built more than a century ago, the school served African-American students in grades one through seven until 1937. One of the newest jewels downtown is the Mar-Va Theater, an Art Deco beauty from 1927 that was renovated and reopened in 2008. The Mar-Va now offers movies for $5, theatrical productions, concerts, and more. Visit mar-vatheater. org for current programs and performances. Afterward relax on the outside deck of some great riverside dining. For more information about Pocomoke City, go to www.downtownpocomoke.com.

OF THE DELAWARE BEACHES

Welcome

to Delaware

Beaches

T

he Delaware beaches are a very popular destination for vacationers during the summer months. With over 25 miles of coastline, there are plenty of pristine, clean and award winning beaches for everyone to enjoy. Fenwick Island and Bethany Beach both offer a relaxing getaway from the normal hustle and bustle. With easy access to the bay and the ocean, many visitors emjoy an abundant variety of outdoor activities available in and near the water. Kayaking, stand up paddle boarding, wind surfing, and swimming, all take advantage of the natural beauty of the area. You can find runners, hikers, and cyclists taking advantage of our flat and friendly terrain in the state parks and beyond. In addition to outdoor activities, many visitors also travel to the Delaware coast for tax-free shopping, beautiful boardwalks and unique dining that you just can’t find anywhere else. The coast of Delaware is known for beautiful beaches, but many travelers visit to learn about the rich heritage that dates back to pre-colonial times. The Indian River Life Saving Station, built in 1876, was constructed to assist ships in need along the coastlines of the United States and is now home to a museum, gift shop and event venue. The building is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and is open to the public for tours. On Coastal Highway from Fenwick Island to Bethany Beach, you may see the large concrete towers along the coastline. In the early 1940’s the United States military set up Fort Miles at the mouth of the Delaware Bay to protect the city of Phila-

98

| DELAWARE BEACH 2014

delphia during WWII. The fort took over 1,500 acres of land. Of the eleven towers constructed, eight were located in Delaware. From the top of the towers, “spotters” could scan approximately 14 miles out to sea in search of enemy vessels and direct the firing of guns mounted along the coastline. Fenwick Island Fenwick Island boasts a beautiful, wide coastline and small beach town atmosphere that attracts thousands each year. Fenwick Island is home to one of only a handful of lighthouses located in Sussex County. You’ll find bayside on 146th St., a section of roadway that coincidentally serves as the state line dividing Maryland and Delaware. The lighthouse is now a museum and is being maintained by the New Friends of the Fenwick Island Lighthouse. The Discover Sea Shipwreck Museum, located on the second floor of Sea Shell City (one of Fenwick Island’s original shops) on Coastal Hwy, is another mustsee attraction. The museum was founded with the goal of recovering and preserving our maritime heritage. The museum opened in 1995 and is one of the largest of its kind in the Mid-Atlantic. An everchanging variety of exhibits offer visitors a collection of shipwreck and recovered artifacts of both regional and worldwide sites, with plenty of reasons to keep coming back. Traveling on Coastal Highway, don’t miss the Bethany-Fenwick Area Chamber of Commerce’s Information Center, located just south of the Fenwick Island State Park. The Information Center is

your one stop shop for everything you will need during your visit. Whether you are planning a local event, looking for something fun to do, or thinking about relocation, the Center has all the information you will need. Tourism Coordinators are available to assist you MondayFriday 9 am-5 pm and Saturday-Sunday 9 am-3pm . Bethany Beach Bethany is known for their quiet beaches, boardwalk, and quaint downtown shopping area with wonderful restaurants and attractions. During the summer season, family friendly entertainment can be enjoyed in the evenings at the bandstand. A Farmers Market is held at the corner of Pennsylvania Ave and Garfield Pkwy. on Sunday. Visitors to Bethany Beach entering on Garfield Parkway are greeted by the legendary totem pole, Chief Little Owl, standing over twenty feet high. Artist, Peter Wolf Toth donated the totem pole to the town as a part of his “Trail of Whispering Giants” project. As part of the project, at least one pole is located in each of the 50 states. The Bethany Beach History Museum is located within town hall, offering photos and brochures, since the town’s incorporation in 1901. Just a short walk West on Garfield Parkway is the Bethany Beach Nature Center and Conservation Area. The property hosts a native plant garden, walking trail, and children’s area. Inside, visitors can enjoy the interactive nature center.

Time to Relax

T

Spa……hhh!

here isn’t much that is as relaxing as a day at the beach, but sometimes you need a vacation from your vacation… The beaches of the Delaware coast offer much more in the way of attractions than just sand and sun. Spas provide a place for rest, relaxation, and a chance to de-stress. The Delaware beaches offer a number of tranquil Day Spas. Make your visit extraordinary and escape to an oasis of relaxation! Vacations are the perfect time to make time to nurture your body and soul with some much needed self care. Whether you are looking for a rejuvenating massage, a soothing facial, a detoxifying body treatment or an indulgent manicure and pedicure you will be sure to find what you need on the spa menu. Nearly all spas have custom day spa packages so consider devoting several hours to some much needed pampering. The professionals at An Ocean Retreat Day Spa & Hair Studio believe in giving you more than a pampering experience. Whether you are dealing with stress, concerned by aging skin, or just want to have a day of relaxation, they are devoted to your unique needs and have spent more than 17 years perfecting their skills by learning just what their clients want and need. An Ocean Retreat Day Spa caters to all so, regardless of gender, all treatments can help calm, restore, reju-

venate, de-stress, anti-age, and heal your mind and body. One of the most popular spa services is Therapeutic Massage. Massage not only feels incredible – it’s good for you too! Massage helps reduce stress and alleviate muscle tension. There are so many different kinds of massages to choose from! When in doubt, a basic Swedish relaxation massage is a good choice for anyone who has never experienced massage therapy. Massage aficionados may prefer a deep tissue massage to work out specific areas of muscle tension or a reflexology treatment which can address problem areas in the entire body from working out corresponding points on the feet. A Deep Tissue massage is a great way to work out those sore muscles after a day’s golf outing. Couples massage has become a very popular spa service. It allows you to share the pampering experience of a relaxation massage with that someone special. Oceanova Spa offers facials, body, and nail treatments so your body is beautiful from the inside out. Only the finest products and highest quality services are offered in an atmosphere of peace and comfort, so you can take a moment to unwind for yourself. Their signature facials use a variety of techniques, from light therapy to hungarian herbal mud, to bring out the best in your skin. Relaxing therapeutic massage treatments range from the traditional swedish and deep tissue massage to hot stone and reflexology. Couples can enjoy the experience together in the spacious couples room, the perfect place to be pampered.

Facials are a wonderful spa service designed to keep you looking your best. They offer a non-invasive anti-aging treatment opportunity for those who are looking for a more natural way to combat premature aging. Facials can be customized to address a variety of skin care concerns including acne, fine lines and wrinkles, hyper pigmentation, and rosacea just to name a few. Facials are divinely relaxing and a great way to keep your skin looking fantastic. Microdermabrasian and LED Light Therapy are some additional anti-aging skin care services that many spas offer. Body treatments are skin care services that provide rejuvenation from head to toe. Detoxifying body wraps and exfoliating body scrubs will leave your whole body amazingly soft, smooth, and energized. Although fun in the sun is part of any great beach vacation, too much sun can lead to premature aging and major health concerns. Spray tanning has become a popular alternative with health conscious spa goers. Spray tan services can help you achieve a healthy beach glow without submitting yourself to the sun’s damaging rays. Spa manicures and Pedicures are an experience in indulgence with special pampering for hands and feet. A trip to the spa may be just what you are looking for on your next visit to the beach. With so much to offer, Delaware coast day spas provide the perfect beach escape and may prove to be the highlight of your next beach vacation.

My grandchildren love sitting in the train. their seasonal Holiday Train events keep getting better and better! Even though we only get to visit every few weeks the bartenders and waitresses remember who we are and what we prefer to drink. I don’t drink regular margaritas, I always order golden Rita’s because they make the Best! The owners also visit the bar and restaurant area frequently and check on all customers. Twila Farrell’s hip and cozy boutique is a treat to your fashion senses - a place to shop for what you want, not what you need. The shop appeals to the young and the young at heart, offering contemporary fashions, interesting and eye-appealing accessories, and eclectic jewelry. The Abraxas Studio of Art features oil paintings, graphite sketches, and reproductions of artwork by Abraxas. His signature style of illuminated reality is present in the seascape, landscape, and still life works available in the gallery. Paintings of Delmarva are the artist’s main focus, as he was raised in Lewes, and enjoys paying homage to the area. Lewes Mercantile Antiques has an inviting gallery hosting over 30 dealers presenting an extensive inventory that includes furniture and home decor with period lighting and every form of wall art. A wide collection of glassware, linens, silver, and

china are some of the finishing touches offered by their vendors. Lewes Mercantile Antiques carries just about anything you can imagine in addition to a hidden treasure you might happily discover. The Stepping Stone Fine Handcrafts and Artworks proudly offers authentic American crafts in a variety of media such as pottery, wood, glass, metals, and jewelry. You will find one of a kind art in single pieces or complete sets. Customers love coming by to browse and to buy, but most of all to enjoy the warm and welcoming environment. If you have a fond appreciation for the arts and antiques and would like to support the local artistry of Lewes, Main Street is a place you don’t want to miss. Take home a very special souvenir and you’ll have bragging rights that you discovered it during your trip to Lewes!

LEWES The Abraxas Studio of Art features oil paintings, graphite sketches, and reproductions of artwork by Abraxas. His signature style of illuminated reality is present in the seascape, landscape, and still life works available in the gallery. Paintings of Delmarva are the artist’s main focus, as he was raised in Lewes, and enjoys paying homage to the area... However, extensive traveling throughout his career has resulted in scenes from many distant locales. Abraxas now offers sketch classes on a limited basis, both in studio and on location. Anyone interested in drawing, whether novice or advanced, can learn from the fundamental techniques that are covered in the classes. Class size is limited so inquire in advance when possible!.

The philosophy of Jewelry Exchange is to welcome you to browse their offerings alone or by having their knowledgeable, friendly staff give you a personal tour. From there you can take your time, browse, relax and enjoy the sight of some of the most unique jewelry around. If you desire to sell or trade some of your own collection, Jewelry Exchange has options that provide discreet, private attention to you and your specific desires. Some of their clientele wish to trade some of their older or no longer worn jewelry and others simply want to sell some of their collection to fund another dream.

“Tucked between the main street and the bay, Hotel Blue provides contemporary, European accommodations for adults... Each (room) offers a tile fireplace, flat screen TVs, fancy stereos, Frette® robes, original local art, small refrigerator and a clear ice bucket akin to a lava lamp that changes hues from ruby to sapphire to gold. The most surprising splash of color lights up the huge bath - transparent double sinks have blue lights strung underneath them...From the lobby’s cream and indigo leather sofas to the rooftop pool and fireplace, the 16-room inn exudes cool.”
