Society of Garden Designers launches new affiliated business partnership. The Society of Garden Designers has launched a new partnership category that will allow the wider landscape industry to become Affiliated Business Partners of the Society. Recognising the many disciplines involved in creating, maintaining and promoting gardens and landscapes, the category will be open to a wide range of experts and professions including suppliers, contractors, nurseries, lighting specialists, water consultants, architects, engineers and photographers, allowing SGD members to benefit from a closer association with them, and giving the SGD the opportunity to showcase the best of the landscape industry. SGD treasurer John Wyer FSGD said: “Garden Designers are at the heart of a collaborative network of other experts and consultants who all contribute to the finished scheme. The idea behind the Affiliated Business partnership is to open the SGD to a wider community of all those who work on gardens. We hope that this will lead to some interesting and productive conversations, and that all will benefit from the closer association.” Companies and individuals can apply to become Affiliated Business Partners subject to meeting a number of conditions, and will be able to take advantage of a host of
benefits including: use of the Affiliated Business logo, listing on the SGD website, access to the SGD’s CPD events, priority booking for trade stands at SGD conferences and events, member rates for SGD events and promotion on SGD social media platforms. The annual fee ranges from £240 for sole traders to £1,200 for businesses with more than 50 employees. Matt Haddon MSGD, SGD Council member for Memberships, said: “We want the SGD to be the centre of a vibrant and inclusive community of those working across the landscape industry to bring it together and provide benefits for all of our wide membership. We expect the membership category to evolve in the coming years to ensure it adds benefit to both our Affiliated Businesses and to our designer members.” Manni Keates, Managing Director of Core Landscape Products, which has already joined the partnership, said: “So much of our revenue comes from SGD members specifying our products that this is a natural progression – we are really looking forward to being an Affiliated Business Partner and all the benefits it will bring.” To apply to become an Affiliated Business Partner or find out more, talk to the SGD team on their stand at The LANDSCAPE Show in September.
R I CHAR D MI E RS - RI C H A R D MI E RS GA RD E N D E S IG N Richard Miers has been designing gardens for over 27 years, both in the UK and abroad. His wide range of projects include an RHS Chelsea Main Avenue garden and winner of the People’s Choice Award, a dacha in Moscow, a villa in Sardinia, country gardens for Grade 1 listed houses in Norfolk and Buckinghamshire, a 15 acre garden for a new build Palladian mansion in Surrey and countless town gardens and roof terraces in London. Lauded as one of the 20 Finest Gardeners & Landscape Designers by Country & Townhouse Magazine in June 2022 and one of the top ten up and coming garden designers by House and Garden Magazine in February 2011, he was also invited to design a show garden for The Daily Telegraph/House and Garden Fair in 2007. In 2012 Richard was chosen to represent the United Kingdom in the Gardening World Cup in Nagasaki Japan with his garden ‘Serenity’ and in 2017 he was again invited by House and Garden Magazine to provide a garden feature at their festival at Olympia.

be it with hedges, walls, paths, terraces, water, trained fruit trees or an avenue of trees. These divide the garden into areas of manageable human scale, defining spaces and giving each area a purpose whilst providing shelter, varying points of interest and framed views; they also help hold the garden together through the winter months. This structure is then softened with bulbs, herbaceous flowers, shrubs and roses so that with the advent of spring & summer the excitement of the budding flowers adds a new, altogether softer dimension to the garden. If there is a theme that runs through his work it is the curved hedging that winds its way through his herbaceous borders or stands out in sensuous baroque curves against lawn or gravel. Symmetry is also important, coupled with a sense of balance, proportion and scale, resulting in gardens that are both harmonious and handsome. Design ethos: ‘Good garden design is all about teamwork and communication. Translating ideas coherently to both client and contractor is key.’ Richard is one of our featured speakers at this years’ LANDSCAPE Show at the NEC in September. Register to attend for free.
Benefits range from representation on the Construction Industry Council to regular Newsletters providing updates on Planning and Building Safety as well as free webinars and discounted events covering a wide range of industry topics. Additionally, the ACA creates and publishes its own contracts such as the ACA Standard Form of Agreement (SFA 12) and the ACA Form of Building Contract. We are also proud to collaborate with Kings College London in the advocacy and promotion of collaborative contracts PPC 2000 and TPC 2005, as well as the Framework Alliance Contracts FAC-1 and TAC-1. E-contracts and Licenses can also be purchased to allow incorporation of multiple project participants. The ACA is delighted to be partnering with The LANDSCAPE Show 2022, as we appreciate the holistic nature of architecture and how it blends and unifies indoor spaces with the outdoors.

Second Life Products Wales were delighted to produce a beach-front walkway and viewing platform on behalf of Swansea Council. Starting out from Swansea Marina, this fully inclusive wheelchairaccessible walkway twists and turns through the dunes, emerging into a stunning viewing platform giving panoramic views over the stunning Swansea Bay and far out to sea. As with all of their recycled plastic lumber, the materials used in the manufacture of the boardwalk are both robust and long lasting. They do not use any composites, only 100% plastic which cannot rot – even in this harsh seaside environment. Where timber would rot and steel would rust, their plastic sections will last a lifetime without ever needing any maintenance.
Best of all, they only ever use plastic profiles manufactured from 100% recycled waste plastic which could otherwise have ended up in a landfill. This eco-friendly approach was key in Swansea Councils decision to task Second Life Products Wales with this project and everyone who has used the boardwalk so far has responded incredibly positively! Come and see the ranges on their stand at LANDSCAPE this September at the NEC.

WESTM I N S T E R
National Trust Paving for Grade I Listed Site Westminster Stone’s National Trust paving ranges are the go to for restoration and conservation projects. Recently, the Petworth Flagstones from the Country House range were chosen to re-landscape Grade I Listed Buckden Towers in St Neots, which boasts a long and rich history spanning over 900 years! The extensive grounds which include a traditional Tudor knot garden had shingled paths and terraces which were not wheelchair friendly. The ‘Friends of Buckden Towers’ wanted to replace the paths with paving which could create a stable footpath, but any new landscaping needed to complement the historic site and add instant maturity.
S T O N E
Westminster Stone’s Stonecast reproduction paving has long been revered for its character and authenticity, hand-made from sourced originals, the texture, colour and sizes provide the ideal substitute to original Yorkstone paving at an affordable price and in a ready supply. The National Trust ranges are inspired by the houses and gardens within the Trust’s care, Buckden Towers chose Petworth Flagstones for their warm olive and subtle grey tones which pair beautifully with the worn red brick of this Tudor manor. British made in Shropshire, Westminster Stone’s traditional paving ranges are a sustainable solution. Westminster Stone will be back at The LANDSCAPE Show in September. Cutting through the inevitable greenwashing from suppliers is difficult, and time consuming, but designers have a responsibility to try to deliver the best gardens for our clients whilst reducing our environmental impact. Why Should You Improve the Speed of Your Website? Building and maintaining a healthy website for your business is more important than you think… Google issued an update in June 2021 that assesses websites more frequently to determine where you rank. They call it the ‘page experience update’. The aim of this is to reward websites that offer better ‘page experience signals’, of which Core Web Vitals is one. “The main content on your website should show within 2.5 seconds of the page loading to be looked upon favourably by Google.” Core Web Vitals provide a better user experience for visitors, which helps to foster trust in their brand and this is rewarded by Google. When combined with other website improvements, such as safe browsing and mobile-friendly design, it can also contribute towards a gradual climb in organic rankings and generate more enquiries for your business.
In a nutshell, if you neglect your vitals, then you’ll end up with less business from your website. How Can Adtrak Help? Winner of a Supplier & Service Provider award, Adtrak are best placed for website design and marketing in the landscaping industry. They place user experience at the heart of every project, with a wealth of digital marketing experience at their fingertips, including SEO, PPC and Social Media. If you are experiencing drops in rankings or performance, come chat to the Adtrak team at The LANDSCAPE Show and they can provide a free audit of your website or to just chat with you about your marketing and the problems you’re wanting to resolve.

S T U D IO Michael Grubb, Founding Director of the Michael Grubb Studio, will draw on his vast portfolio of highly successful landscape projects at this year’s LANDSCAPE Show. One of the Studio’s recent projects was a Public Realm Lighting Strategy for Brighton & Hove’s Circus Street Development, which transformed a disused area of the city centre into a vibrant new social, cultural, and economic quarter. Under the ownership of regeneration specialists U+I PLC, the development benefits from the creative and inspirational approach that the Studio is chosen for. Consisting of 142 shared ownership and private homes, 450 student accommodation bedrooms, 30,000sq.ft office space, and food, drink, and retail units, the Circus Street development also features the city’s first ever purposebuilt dance space. Renowned architects shedkm and landscape architects J & L Gibbons were appointed to deliver the project. Brighton and Hove City Council also played a role in the success of the project as Public Private Partner.

realm. Each entrance to the development has its own catenary lighting flow system with a super-sized pendant, either a pyramid, cube, or sphere. These forms, and their materiality, are directly informed by the adjacent buildings designed by shedkm and work to assist those navigating the site by day or night. The lighting design blended seamlessly with the landscape design curated by J & L Gibbons, whilst incorporating the boldness and vibrance of Brighton. The configuration of exterior lighting includes both horizontal and vertical illumination. The central core and main square contain layers of architectural lighting, complementing each other. The result is a lighting strategy successfully delivered on its core ambition of creating a meaningful environment that becomes a healthy, vibrant, sustainable community model of city life. C HE CK’NDO U T This is the first time an App exhibitor is joining the show and going to showcasing a platform which is expected to help most of the tradesmen, builders etc. participating in the show. Using the App will give an edge over your competitors. With the launch of Check’NdOut the void in the Field Services Apps, seems to be filled. Already adopted by tradesmen within construction companies it has already shown positive trends and is expected to cover other businesses rapidly. The simplicity of the App seems to be the key towards its’ speedy adoption. Another factor pointed out by users and experts is the cost effectiveness. No other app could compete with such a feature rich app at this price. This one-stop-solution appears to be unique of its kind. The detailing in each functionality has made the acceptance level very high. The tracking and payment calculation support engine is the game changer and being loved by the companies due to amount of saving it provides instantly. Time management through calendar has simplified appointment and job scheduling. Invoicing and quotations provide a complete cycle. The communication centralization through chat/call is the ‘cherry on the cake’. The App is currently functional in UK and it will be soon targeted in other European and American countries. Come and see it for yourself on their stand at LANDSCAPE 2022.
The project is supported by individual ambassadors in 75+ different countries with events and activities all over the world, a huge network of connections and a supportive community to join. It is open to all women working in lighting, covering all fields such as architecture, art, entertainment, manufacturing, education, research and journalism. Women in Lighting have partnered with The LANDSCAPE Show to ensure that lighting design and particularly female designers are profiled to as wide an audience as possible.

G RI P S UR E Gripsure decking has been used on an office roof terrace in the heart of the City of London’s financial district. Workers in the tall building in Fenchurch Street, home to many corporate offices and company headquarters, can now take time out on a stylish, non-slip decking area. Gripsure supplied 586 of the smooth profile MOSO® bamboo boards with black anti-slip inserts for the project, completed last year. The private roof terrace serves as a ‘breakout area’ for office staff to relax, meet and entertain in an outdoor setting, which has fantastic views over the Thames. The existing timber deck had come to the end of its service life and risks of slips and falls had meant that the terrace area had to be closed. Contractors MJ Ferguson stripped away the old boards and installed 150m sq of Gripsure’s light MOSO® bamboo decking with non-slip inserts.

OASE’s Copper Bowl and Corten Steel Cube water features have featured consistently in show gardens and landscaping events this year. At the recent RHS Malvern 2022 Best in Show: “The Hide Garden” by Emily Crowley-Wroe, set the Copper Bowl beautifully amongst a naturally planted stream. Emily notes inspiration from Greystones Nature Reserve, where a local river helped form the idea for the use of water in the design. The garden was wholly impressive, but Emily sums it up the best “The bowl really made it”. The Cube was the focus at this year’s RHS Hampton Court Festival, Phil Tremayne (General Manager for the Association of Landscapers) showcased the OASE Cube 90 in the APL’s educational “What lies beneath” exhibition. In contrast to the Malvern bowl’s placement in a stream, the cube was presented on an exposed OASE reservoir 120. OASE is focused on showcasing how easy these products are to install and how dynamic in use they can be. APL’s stand
was the perfect opportunity to inspire and educate those wishing to include water landscaping in their future projects. Phil highlighted the benefits of having water features in projects, especially in a residential setting. “Water features are such a good thing for your garden, alongside being very popular, they attract wildlife, provide soothing and relaxing sounds in the garden, and have options for any styles whether that be rock formations or something more modern and self-containing.” To find out more about OASE’s full range of water landscaping products, visit their stand at LANDSCAPE 2022.
B ARRETTIN E Protect and Preserve With Barrettine’s high-quality wood treatments, that help landscaping garden structures last a lifetime! As many of us try to live more sustainably, it’s only right that we turn our attention to how we maintain our gardens. For a start, choosing a high-quality wood treatment, such as those from Barrettine, can go a long way to ensuring any wooden structures around the home and garden will last a lifetime. That means they’ll be helping us do our bit for the planet, as they’ll be reducing the need to buy new pieces - and in turn, the demand for newly cut timber. What’s more, some of the raw materials used in Barrettine products are plant and vegetable-based, including linseed and soya oil, which help nourish, protect and preserve the wood.

BRI C KW OR KS Taupe clay pavers give a contemporary look to this London city garden. Different laying patterns demarcate virtual zones and make the overall picture even more dynamic. Jenny Bloom said “This urban courtyard garden in London was designed for clients to enjoy alfresco living - as the dated garden they had inherited had no real place to sit comfortably. Midway through the build, the country went into its first lockdown and the garden became an even more important space for the family. Vande Moortel Clay pavers SeptimA Taupe were used in different patterns in the courtyard spaces which could be used flexibly for eating out or lounging. One of the spaces was enlarged from the original design to accommodate the family’s full size table tennis table, a vital diversion during lockdown. New steps and terraced planting also improved the view from the basement flat. The mature trees on site were retained, with existing dated brick planters replaced by contemporary corten steel. Corten was also used to trim the green roof on the new bespoke cedar clad storage shed, with cedar

slatted trellis along the garden walls to improve privacy. The mixed planting scheme adds texture and colour and helps soften the space. The clay pavers added a contemporary feel, working well with the corten steel planters and were the perfect choice to complement the clients’ house with its dark grey paintwork. The garden was used extensively during lockdown and as things opened up became more of a sociable space for family and friends.” With an ecological touch, existing trees were retained on site. The new planting scheme with changing seasonal interest has added more diversity to the garden, with more food and habitats for pollinators and wildlife. The large storage shed has a green roof and all rainfall goes back into the ground. Come and talk to Vande Moortel at their stand at LANDSCAPE this September at the NEC.
The Meadow Border There’s something magical about a wildflower meadow. Not only is it a buzzing, chirping, living, breathing essential part of life on earth but it calls to something deep inside us. The beauty is familiar, comforting, a connection to a wilder time when we fully embraced and understood that we were a part of nature too. Not everyone has a swathe of land to give over to meadow and letting precious outdoor space run wild isn’t for everyone. The Meadow Border, as seen at Gardeners’ World Live Special Edition 2021, took inspiration from nature and ran with it. The wildflower meadow aesthetic was built upon mixing wildflowers with garden favourites to create a beautifully designed, nature inspired, haven for wildlife and a connection to a wilder us. Native wildflowers mixed with garden favourites. Cultivated roses mimicked the dog roses of early summer mingling happily with Common Knapweeds and Field Scabious. While familiar garden plants evoked their wilder cousins. Cosmos took the place of Ox-eye daisies while Ammi majus and Selinum wallichianum echoed Cow parsley and the statuesque Hogweed.

The Green Roof Organisation (GRO) formed as the UK’s official Trade association for green roofing in 2020. GRO develops guidance documents and promotes the adoption of these green roofs to a higher standard with demonstrable environmental benefits. We represent waterproofing manufacturers, suppliers of systems and components, contractors and installers and any associates involved in the delivery of green roofs. GRO is keen to build more connections with landscaping professionals, as the successful implementation of green roofs requires great communication between roofers and landscapers. Our updated GRO Code of Best practice provides an overall picture for any professional wanting to get involved in green roofing. GRO recognises the need to connect with the more domestic market, and The LANDSCAPE Show provides us with the perfect opportunity to connect and provide an insight into the experience we have gained so far, and find out what garden designers and creators really need from us.

E URO PLANT E RS As part of a major renovation, this Alderley Edge roof terrace offering stunning views across the Cheshire landscape, was made much larger. Europlanters manufactured several large Corten effect GRP planters, a hidden storage bench and over 13 metres of GRP screening in this unique outdoor living space designed by David Keegan Garden Design and installed by Butler Landscapes. The stunning GRP Corten effect perfectly replicates the real thing. This effect takes time and patience to create, but offers a great alternative without the complications of staining or weight of real Corten. The planters offer large raised beds of ornamental plants and a host of herbs near the kitchen area. The GRP partitions create the ideal privacy screening. Strategically placed lighting generates the perfect ambience in the evening, whilst the surrounding tree canopies facilitate wonderful bird songs.

Butek Ponds are part of the Butyl Products Group, established in 1965. They offer high-quality materials manufactured by their class-leading production technicians in their factory located in Billericay, Essex. Due to their unrivalled ability to manufacture from a full range of rubber and plastic materials, they can offer impartial advice regarding material selection based on your project and the budget available. One of their key strengths is the ability to manufacture bespoke solutions to create the perfect pond. See this example of David’s bespoke Koi Pond: David came to Butek Ponds with a complex design, the pond was an ‘L’ shape with each corner being of a slightly different angle. After an initial phone conversation with one of their Engineers discussing all the requirements that needed to be met, David sent across a drawing of his pond with all the necessary dimensions and angles.
Cameron, Butek Pond’s Engineer then created a custom quotation for a bespoke ‘L’ shaped liner in 1.0mm thick Butyl Rubber, which would be manufactured to the exact measurements provided by David in his drawing. The bespoke liner made for easy installation allowing David to create a perfect safe environment for the fish in his Koi-pond, and a stunning feature for his garden, which his family and friends will enjoy for years to come. Visit Butek Ponds at The LANDSCAPE Show in September at the NEC for further information regarding you bespoke project and how they can assist.

E L MTEC, UK D I S TR IB UT O RS O F SKETC H U P Garden designers, landscape architects and designers use SketchUp to communicate their vision and bring their clients’ ideas to life. Carly Tong Garden Design (who was awarded Gold at the BBC Gardeners World Event for her Beautiful Boarder earlier this year) talks about her design philosophy and using SketchUp as a 3D modelling software for her client projects: “The last two and a half years have taught many of us a lot about how we use and occupy available outdoor spaces; gardens, patios, yards, balconies and window boxes, all are important connections to an outdoor space in our immediate vicinity. These spaces provide many of us with solace, places to contemplate, busy ourselves, plant, create and more. In 2021, I began incorporating SketchUp in my design process. I have found it extremely versatile to present my ideas to clients from concept sketches through to presenting final visualisations. I use SketchUp alongside my hand drawings. I love the way you can start with shapes in 2D and when modelled in 3D the design can be shown in simple terms before the rendering stage begins. I am able to use SketchUp for 2D & 3D without the use of other CAD software, making it good value for money. The SketchUp 3D Warehouse has been invaluable in helping to bring my gardens to life, with the vast selection of planting, garden furniture and small accessories. Without this tool it would be a laborious task to model all these items.” Come and see SketchUp for yourself on their stand at LANDSCAPE this September at the NEC.

YPHA, Young People in Horticulture Association, is a free association set up in January 2020 by 3 young horticulturists missing the networking and connection that other generations have within our industry. YPHA is for anyone under the age of 35 that works in or studies horticulture, our aims are to facilitate collaboration, education, and innovation within the group and wider. We have partnered with The LANDSCAPE Show to meet more young horticulturists, from landscapers, gardeners to garden centre staff to join this great free association and to unite the scatterings of under 35’s in horticulture. Rachel runs an award-winning design practice in Scotland that aims to create plant-filled gardens, which are good for people and wildlife, and that aims to have a low environmental impact. In their work, they consider the connection of the garden with surrounding and nearby habitat types to allow connectivity and movement of species within and across the landscape. Of course, the garden is carefully designed for the clients to enjoy the space and the nature that uses the site. They are currently working on a project on the west coast of Scotland where the site is suitable for the marsh fritillary butterfly (and caterpillar), of which there is a population in a nearby nature reserve. They will select foraging plants set within a patchwork of shorter and taller vegetation created through considered planting design and management.
They will of course extend this to encourage populations of other butterflies, pollinators and birds creating a mosaic of habitat types, including wetlands, woodlands, and hedges along the boundary as well as within it and open grassland. The garden will be layered in time and space. A bird hide, benches overlooking a pond, nestled within a meadow and within a woodland, as well as a dining area close to the house will offer a variety of places to enjoy the garden. Cut-grass paths and raised timber walkways where it is wet underfoot will allow movement around the garden. Stone sourced onsite will be used for drystone walls and other features. Come and listen to Rachel who is one of our featured speakers at this years’ LANDSCAPE Show in September at the NEC.

D E SIG N We all know the value of green space and the nature connection it provides, allowing a sense of wellbeing or calm for a moment, especially when times are difficult like when we are grieving or saying goodbye to a loved one. The hospital environment is harsh, so being able to escape the sensory assault in the most difficult moments can be a true blessing. To have the sky above you, trees and plants around you and the sound of water, calming the senses and taking the edge off the moment, or providing space to feel what you need to feel. At Ashford St Peter’s it was decided to create this garden by the NHS Foundation Trust’s Healing Arts programme, with this project funded entirely by the Friends of St Peter’s Hospital. Rae Wilkinson was selected as the designer for the space working with The Outdoor Room who built the garden within a tight timeframe and with limited access, achieving a very high standard.

T O O L S It has been a busy few months for Fandango Fire Tools. A few months ago few people in the UK knew about the Kindling Cracker. Now over 10,000 British homes own one; dozens of dealers stock them and even the Duchess of Cambridge has enjoyed using one. Fandango Fire Tools have brought two outstanding ranges to the UK since November 2021. The Kindling Cracker makes light and safe work splitting logs for chimineas, fire pits, outdoor pizza ovens, grills and indoor log burners while Espegard fire pans offer an authentic Norwegian way to cook outdoors. The star of the show is the Kindling Cracker, a patented firewood splitter invented a decade ago by Ayla when she was 13 and at school in New Zealand. Made in Australia from top-grade, recycled cast iron, it is now hugely popular with consumers and buyers with hundreds of thousands of units sold across the globe.

British garden and outdoor living enthusiasts are hugely impressed and with more and more gardens than ever having fire pits, pizza ovens, wood fire hot tubs and grills, the Kindling Cracker is the perfect accessory. And because
it allows you to split wood without using an axe, it is a safe alternative to use indoors and out by young and old alike. During Spring 2022, Fandango Fire Tools brought a traditional range of fire pans, braziers and grills from Norwegian company Espegard to the UK. This range brings Nordic inspiration from Norway’s mountains, forests and seas to UK gardens. Espegard has been making outdoor products for three decades. It’s portable cooking pan and grill enable people, wherever they are to keep warm and enjoy the simple pleasures of eating outside. Fandango Fire Tools will be exhibiting at The LANDSCAPE Show for the very first time in September at the NEC.

Delta Light’s New In-House Lacquering Line For Optimum Lighting Products At Delta Light - only the very best will do. They guarantee the highest quality products, by managing everything in house, from the materials to the technology, and the different steps in the production process. They build to last. Their entire manufacturing process contributes to the durability of their light fixtures, ideal for clients who are looking for pure lighting pleasure for the long term. Coating is an essential step in this production process, as it largely determines the ultimate service life of the light fixtures. Delta Light begin with extensive pre-treatments to offer the maximum protection against corrosion, this includes preparing the surface properly to ensure all residue is removed, and to apply a chemical conversion treatment on all appropriate parts, which does also include the cast aluminium. The titanium-based conversion coat offers that additional protection before the final coat of polyester paint is applied. The polyester powder coating is based on saturated polyester resins, applied electrostatically and cured in an oven at 200° to guarantee durability, and a high resistance to aging from the atmosphere, and UV light exposure. All coating procedures at Delta Light involve automatic process controls and daily quality tests to ensure that the conversion coating is formed in the best way possible for maximum powder coating adhesion, and the optimum resistance to corrosion. The process is completed with a filiform corrosion test, which lasts up to 1,000 hours. The process is unique, and so are the lights. Delta Light pride themselves on being a leading light in everything they do – including the quality of their products. In the cold light of day, they not only want the light you see to be perfect in every way – but also to stay this way for the long term. That’s why durability and quality are at the core of everything they do. See their ranges on their stand at LANDSCAPE Show this September at the NEC.

L AN D S C A P ES Concrete is a fantastic material which is why it’s used the world over so we need to figure out how to create materials with the same benefits but without the devastating environmental impact. Although a small garden this project gave Steve Williams and his team the perfect opportunity to explore a ground breaking cement free product called ‘Cemfree’. Access was really tight so cast concrete features were the perfect choice as we could create large cast features in situ without needing machinery to bring them in.

@landscapeevent #Landscape2022 LANDSCAPESHOW.CO.UK
Simple concrete terraces provide movement through the space, set amongst an immersive, wild woodland glade. These lead to an outdoor living space with cast concrete coffee table and cooking stand. Keeping the hardlandscaping simple has allowed nature to collonise the planting environments, full of self seeders from the local nature reserve behind as well as designed plant communities they have created a truely unique, wilder pallette, great for local biodiversity and very little maintenance. Even small toads have begun to find home in the dense planting layers.
The building is made of oak and lined with reclaimed barn wood, all designed to weather to a beautiful silver, grey patina. There was plenty of old concrete and brick excavated from the groundworks. They crushed all the site waste to create a growing medium with zero soil. The team seeded this to create a fully sustainable biodiverse roof system. Piles of left over sand create homes for bees and logs stacked, creating different habitats for nature to permeate. Steve Williams Landscapes have been pioneering this material on larger scale developments in London with their design partnership at London glades including one of the first carbon positive developments in Europe. Steve will be Celebrating the New Environmental Generation with London College of Garden Design on day 2 of LANDSCAPE at the NEC. Make sure you’re there and part of the conversation.

L UM ENA L I G HTS ‘Green’ design schemes are rapidly becoming more than just about environmentally conscious horticulture. More than ever, clients and landscapers are embracing the sustainable approach in all aspects of design such as planting, paving, materials and indeed lighting. In the lighting arena, the Lumena designers have been working hard to provide a renewable lighting solution for gardens. Solar power was the obvious place to begin. Every garden is different, so they had to offer a solution that could be easily customised for each project. It was for this reason that they recently introduced the Durasol, a 12v solar lighting system. The Durasol gives the opportunity to power existing high-end 12v lighting by solar energy, rather than a wired transformer unit. Any light within the 12v ‘VERSA’ range is compatible with the Durasol. Simply plug each wire into the next and it’s good to go! In one project (pictured), the installer needed a solution that provided an easy power source to lights without digging up the garden to lay cable. The Durasol was ideal for the task. Cabling from the low voltage unit could be left safely and neatly on the surface without being a danger to animals or people. Once installed, the effect was incredible. Brass step lights and spreadlights were used to provide a safe illumination of a patio and step area. The brass light fittings provide ornamental beauty at night without taking attention from the rest of the design during the day. Come and see more from the range on the Lumena stand at LANDSCAPE this September at the NEC.

AZ PECTS EASYPrime, your essential slurry primer A lasting impact of lockdown has been an understanding of the value of gardens. The garden is no longer just a place to grow vegetables; it is an extension of the home that provides space for cooking, dining or even working. Outdoor living is expected to develop into a year-round phenomenon in the UK. This presents an opportunity for UK trades that have historically been divided between indoor and outdoor skill sets. The rise of matching porcelain tiles for kitchens and patios is just one example of this crossover. While some designers embrace zoning with texture and colour, others prefer the flow of uninterrupted flooring. For the perfect outdoor living space, you need to get the details just right: level flooring throughout, a smooth finish and quality materials.

S TRA IGHTCU RVE Products used: Straightcurve 240mm Rigidline + Fixed Height Line 400mm The Straightcurve® team know that there is nothing quite like a case study to whet the appetite of professional landscapers, garden designers and, indeed, also the home gardener. The garden of this lovely Cornish cottage felt cramped due to the sloping path and walls on either side, leading up to the front door. The client wanted to utilise the sunny aspect at the front of the house and create a place to sit but didn’t want to feel exposed to the lane below and the surrounding houses.

@landscapeevent #Landscape2022 LANDSCAPESHOW.CO.UK
The contractor, Mid Cornwall Landscaping Ltd, decided to create a small sunken paved area close to the house giving privacy and making it a place to enjoy the surrounding plants and the sun. The materials were chosen to complement the yellows and rusty reds and browns of Cornish Stonework in the house and the existing walls. The Limestone paving was laid with wide joints filled with Limestone chippings to allow for creeping plants to be planted and soften the edges.

A CORNISH CASE STUDY
Why did the contractor choose Straightcurve® for this project? Straightcurve edging was chosen to give a contemporary feel to the project but also complementing the colours in the paving and walling. This weathering steel, rusts four times more slowly than common steel, resulting in a stunning system which has a subtle darkening of the patina colour over time. It was also used to form the risers of the steps to the sunken paved area and was found to offer the best space-saving option because the steps could be formed without encroaching on the surrounding path. No fuss with Straightcurve ...the simple yet effective garden edging solution! Straightcurve will be exhibiting at LANDSCAPE for the very first time in September. Meet them and their team to find out more.

Horticulture – Investing for a Changing Landscape Jeremy King, Managing Director at Boningale limited alongside Ryan Simpson, Sales Manager for Viridis Plants will be hosting a seminar session at The LANDSCAPE Show this year. They will be giving you an insight to some of the new and important initiatives been put in place and trialled within the Boningale group. Joining the business from the engineering sector, Jeremy is all too familiar with “Key industry risks” quickly identifying the labour and training risks the horticulture industry is facing. Due to limited support from the industry Boningale has recently developed an apprenticeship programme aimed at giving individuals the opportunity to work in several key horticulture and non-horticulture roles as well as supporting and developing its current staff in growing their careers. In addition, Boningale are supporting initiatives such as the YPHA that are bringing together under 35s working in horticulture facilitating collaboration, education, and innovation.
Ryan Simpson will be explaining how the use of research and educational seminars have opened new opportunities for Viridis Plants. This new approach has led to adapting and evolving its range, being invited to work with other training providers and the development of a trials facility in Shropshire which is being used to trial key plant varieties under differing conditions giving important data that will be used to further aid development of their plant range for the changing environment and deliver a lasting landscape. This facility will also form the centre of the groups environmental and educational plans for the future making Viridis one of the key suppliers to garden designers and landscapers in a changing landscape. The horticulture industry is evolving and Boningale are at the forefront of piloting new schemes aimed at adapting it’s range through trials, reducing its carbon footprint, introducing new best practices, and investing for the future with staff and its infrastructure. Jeremy and Ryan will be speaking on Wednesday the 28th of September. Visit LANDSCAPE at the NEC and hear what they have to say.

P E RENNIA L Perennial, the charity for people in horticulture, is launching a new promotion called ‘Plants for Perennial’ in collaboration with three major wholesale nurseries Allensmore Nurseries, The Bransford Webbs Plant Company and Wyevale Nurseries. The scheme will generate funds for the charity through a proportion of plant sales. Perennial’s services have never been so important. The rising cost of living is being felt across the industry. To help the charity to respond quickly and flexibly to the challenges that people are facing the whole industry needs to unite in support. This joint promotion is a great example of how businesses can work together to support individuals and their families that are struggling.

‘Plant for Perennial’ include Dianthus ‘Pink Celebration’ from Allensmore, Nemesia ‘Peaches and Cream’ from Bransford Webbs and ‘Salvia Cuello Pink’ and ‘Salvia Cuello White’ from Wyevale. These plants are available to prebook for delivery in Spring 2023. An on-pot and on-label charity message will appear on all the plants and a proportion of all sales will be donated to Perennial. The joint promotion was the creation of Mark Taylor,
Managing Director at Allensmore, following a conversation with Perennial Trustee Richard Lawton at a Perennial event. Mark invited Adrian Marskell, Managing Director at Bransford Webbs and Andy Johnson, Managing Director at Wyevale to join him in the scheme. Mark Taylor comments: “Perennial is a fantastic charity doing so much to help people in our industry. I’m particularly pleased to be working with Wyevale and Bransford Webbs on a joint venture to help collectively raise funds and promote the efforts Perennial makes to support our trade.” Richard Lawton adds: “This collaboration between three fantastic nurseries is a great example of how the industry can support the charity through a cause related marketing and fundraising scheme. On behalf of all at Perennial, I’d like to thank the nurseries for their support. ‘Plant for Perennial’ will be a valued vehicle for spreading the message that Perennial is here for all.” Visit the Perennial stand at this year’s LANDSCAPE Show to find out how they can support you and your staff.
S TE IN F IX Introducing ‘steinfix’ the quick, clean and easy Edging Profile which allows all formats of paving slabs to be laid without the need for concrete, sand or cement. Developed in Switzerland and used extensively throughout Europe for the last 12 years, ‘steinfix’ is the future of Landscape Edging Profiles. ‘steinfix’ does away with the need for messy sand and cement preparation and gives the Landscaper many benefits such as time saving, laying directly onto the chippings, cleaner workspace as no need for messy cement base and better edging to grass as the profile allows the turf to drain and to breathe. No more browning of grass edge. ‘steinfix’ is made from recycled and impact-resistant, rigid PVC. The various profiles provides the perfect solution to a range of applications, from Seating areas with Ceramic / Porcelain tiles through to paving capable of being driven on with vehicles up to 3.5 Tonnes.

A FI TI MB E R I N G RO UND CON T A C T CO NFE R ENC E The AFI has long heard from its members of their apprehension over the longevity of timber in ground contact, the confusion over other offerings that are available and how this affects numerous sectors of the fencing industry. Problems with timber can impact workload, reputation and safety. To bring clarity to the situation, the AFI will bring together all industries who use timber to allow an open discussion to take places so that concerns can be raised and give everyone the opportunity to have their voice heard. They will be able to have an open discussion realising the issues affecting all sides of the changes to wood treatment since the banning of CCA. With attendees from across fencing, individuals and manufacturers will be able to discuss solutions and progress the situation. As well as an open forum, the conference will look at what the market currently has available - from existing and alternative products to new treatments. From uncertainty on certain chemicals and how the existing warranties help the end users, installers and the supply chain to sustainability and environmental credentials of products within ground contact the event will be informative, interactive and beneficial to anyone using timber in their projects, not just fencing. Speaking and exhibitors include McVeigh Parker, DuraPost, Wood Protection Association (WPA), Arxada Wood Protection, Scanpole, Duralock, Allen Concrete, Hahn Plastics and Impra Wood Protection. For more details visit The LANDSCAPE Show and talk to the team.
Plant Heritage conserves the diversity of our garden plants. We have a rich horticultural history, but this history doesn’t maintain itself. We aim to conserve and safeguard our horticultural heritage by keeping living examples of garden plants in the National Plant Collections® scheme. There are now over 690 National Plant Collections, created and curated by individuals or organisations who are passionate about protecting the diversity of our rich flora. Plant Heritage has partnered with LANDSCAPE as the National Plant Collections form the backbone of garden plant diversity in the UK. They give choice and expertise to gardeners, designers and nurseries. Collections can also be housed in a variety of settings, both outdoors and in, and we are always seeking new people and places to develop collections, to keep this diversity safe for the future.

S TE P CHA N G E D E S IGN A fresh look at creating care home gardens. Designers risk their reputations by creating gardens that are not used as much as their care sector clients expect them to be and it was this simple concern that lead to Step Change Design’s study to understand why many care home gardens quickly become unused after the novelty has worn off, even where they met the latest design guidance. They witnessed many powerful moments that made them question their own design approach and the fact that even with the best of intentions we sometimes can be the inadvertent cause of obstacles to greater garden use by residents living in care, particularly for people living with dementia.

As a design studio and aftercare company, the team at Harry Holding Garden Design have developed an initiative ‘Green Walls in Schools’, securing government grant money to deliver living walls in inner-city schools that are deprived of green space and heavily polluted. They have just completed another installation in South West London where edibles, sensory plants and lush textural evergreens create a tapestry of vertical greening which brings a huge amount of joy to the children’s playground. Their skilled team of soft landscapers always have such great fun involving the pupils, relishing in the opportunity to teach them about the importance of nature and wildlife for both the environment and well-being. They are excited to carry on rolling out this initiative and hope to involve more urban schools all across the city of London. Green infrastructure
can transform even the most challenging and hostile of places and Harry Holding and his team believe that through considered collaboration with schools that are committed to long-term success, the lives of many can be enhanced on a daily basis. Join Harry on day 2 of The LANDSCAPE Show at the NEC where he will be Celebrating the New Environmental Generation with London College of Garden Design.

As an experienced and passionate lighting designer he is well aware of the imperative to stage atmospheres for the users of illuminated spaces. Through a constructive orchestration of tonality, visual hierarchy, contrast, intensity and possibly a sense of the unnatural, lighting can shape the meaning and feeling of space that conforms to or alters the very sensory and perceptual pathways in which we rely.

Be it an interior or exterior environment, light will enhance the visual volume and reinforce wayfinding and visual hierarchy.
The key functions of exterior lighting are orientation, obstacle avoidance and safety. The subjective functions are much more complex. Lighting at night can be emotive subject; it is for this reason that the concept of artificial lighting of the urban environment cannot be understood by quantitative data alone. In many cases the justification for exterior lighting is not one of safety or orientation but of aesthetics – the desire to create a beautiful space or emphasise architectural form. Aimed at Urban Designers , Landscape Architects and Garden Designers; Lee is providing a lively and engaging seminar where he discusses the science of light, the impression of light, reinforcing the masterplan and the future of technologies in relation to the principals and elements of urban and landscape design. Come and listen to Lee at this years’ LANDSCAPE Show in September at the NEC.

Case Study: River Rea, Longbridge, Birmingham In late 2020 Greenfix’s Technical Team was contacted by Landscape Architects at Page Wagner Associates Ltd for an upcoming project in Longbridge, Birmingham. The project included the diversion of a section of the River Rea due to a new multi-use development in the area however, as this section of the river is subject to high flows, careful consideration was needed to ensure a suitable product was selected. After working closely with the landscape architects throughout the planning stages it was established that along the waterline, where the higher flow rates were an issue, the heavy-duty Embankment Mat 700S would be used. Further up the embankment where there is the potential for flooding, the lighter duty Embankment Mat 400S was added to the design.
Both products are 100% biodegradable and incorporate a total ground cover coir blanket which is stitched between two coir mesh layers for added durability. The blankets were supplied pre-seeded with a wildflower mix as specified in the design to promote biodiversity at the site and boost the surrounding ecosystem. Greenfix representatives met with contractors, ACS, for a pre-start meeting to provide installation guidance and advice prior to the blankets use. Follow up progress meetings were also conducted where Greenfix’s expert team was able to provide continued advice surrounding river restoration and best practices. Come and talk to Greenfix on their stand at LANDSCAPE this September at the NEC.

PE RENNIA L Perennial, the charity for people working in horticulture, has developed its ‘Support for Families’ programme with new resources to help families access a wide range of support available to them. The programme has been developed in response to the rising cost of living – with price of food, fuel and other essentials surging in recent months, many families across the horticulture industry are struggling to meet everyday living costs. Julia Hayne, Director of Services, says: “One in four people responding to our recent Health and Wellbeing survey said that their income didn’t cover their daily living costs. We understand the impact on families by the rising cost of living and how this is biting into family budgets. Families can miss out on the support that is available to them from free school meals, getting support during school holidays, help with school uniform and benefits. Many working families often don’t know that they are entitled to benefits or support payments which could make a difference of up to £100 a week for some families.” As well as supporting families to access government support and local help, Perennial has a team of specialist advisors who can help families with so much more; from exploring new employment opportunities, developing skills through training or helping take back control of everyday finances. The Perennial Health and Wellbeing app also includes parenting top tips and a no holds barred podcast series about parenting and modern family life. More information on the support available for families can be found on their stand at LANDSCAPE this September at the NEC in Birmingham.
The Association of Professional Landscapers (APL) accredits companies who design, build and maintain gardens throughout the UK against a strict inspection process. This ensures that we can promote our members to the public knowing they will offer a professional service to the best of our ability. Whilst this is a great resource for the public, we also spend a great deal of time in establishing ways we can support our members. This may be through business advice, training, guidance with policy or sometimes simply signposting the right place to go for information. The process to join is rigorous. It encompasses all categories which include Landscaper, Designer and Professional Gardener. The APL is the only landscaping and gardening scheme operator of Trustmark. Throughout 2021 and the start of 2022 The APL have been creating a series of construction guidance information. This is free to download for members and non-members and will eventually create a valuable resource for the whole industry. Our partnered training centres and own apprenticeship also provide a great platform for young aspiring individuals interested in this industry to shine. Garden designers, landscapers and professional gardeners all visit The LANDSCAPE Show, and the APL believe it is a vitally important event in the landscaping calendar to support and take part in. Networking with industry peers is a great way to share information and promote the benefits of APL membership so it would be foolish to miss out!
