ALLUR
Allur long-lasting composite decking was featured on Channel 4’s Project Home with Nick Grimshaw and Kunle Barker on the first episode of the new TV series. Nick and Kunle were tasked with combining both Scott & Caroline’s interior design visions to create a space that would both love for years to come using a virtual world environment which then turned into reality.
After the inside designs were finalised, Kunle suggested upgrading Scott and Caroline’s outdoor space with some of the budget they had left over. Using the virtual design world technology, Kunle showed them that by putting their kitchen floor and outdoor space on the same level would make it feel like the outdoor space was an extension of their home.
Kunle suggested to accessorise the space with some tropical plants, an outdoor corner sofa and a coffee table to make it feel like Scott and Caroline’s Garden was an addition to their existing indoor living space. The on-trend grey decking, finished off with some modern accessories has created a modern and chic outdoor living room, perfect for all of the family to enjoy.

BRITISH WILDFLOWER PLANTS
British Wildflower Plants have been growing native plants (wild flowers) since 1975, during which time they have supplied plants to almost all habitats from sand dunes to mountains. Currently they have helped restore and reinstate a large roof garden in London, which having been left to itself over Covid had lost much of its habitat whilst no-one was allowed to maintain it. Roof gardens are very popular at the moment and British Wildflower Plants are supplying several big contracts.
At the same time they are also growing the plants for a garden at “Gardeners World Live” NEC in June which is being used to show the many plant species needed by butterflies as both nectar and food supply as advised by Butterfly Conservation.
2023 season has had a late start, cold nights and wet days have made growing difficult for many species, but they have supplied many wildlife gardens – over 800 so far this year, plus helped create a woodland ground flora for recently restored woodland.
All their plants are grown in peat-free compost (since 1991) and bio-controls are used for pest prevention. Meet the team at LANDSCAPE 2023, where they’ll be available to show you what they can do.
CLICK AND GROW
Click and Grow is excited to be at the forefront of the indoor gardening sector. From its humble beginnings in 2009 to its current status as a global market leader, the company has introduced many exciting products that help its customers feel more connected to nature. Click and Grow’s gardens have been featured on The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon, in George Clooney’s sci-fi movie, ‘Midnight Sky’, and been approved by countless prominent publications such as the New York Times, Fast Company, and Vogue.
Most recently, the company was proud to launch the Click and Grow 25 through Kickstarter. The popularity and demand for this garden were so great that it received over $300,000 in backing during its first hours. It’s currently the most space and energy-efficient indoor garden on the market, designed to grow vitamin-rich greens sustainably, all year long. On top of that, the garden’s aesthetics and ease of use help it to fit seamlessly into any urban dweller’s lifestyle.

Click and Grow continues to refine its plant catalogue, enabling users to grow some of the most popular plants for well-being, cooking, and decoration, as well as many rare varieties that are virtually impossible to find in stores. Come and meet members of the Click and Grow team at LANDSCAPE 2023 and discover how their smart gardens can help you enjoy a happier, healthier life.

EMPREINTE RECREATION MUR DES
At the end of 2022 saw the completion of a great adventure started a year and a half before: the inauguration in Suzhou, China, of the reproduction of the Mur des je t’aime, a famous work of the square des Abbesses in Montmartre.
Empreinte was contacted by Claire Kito and Frédéric Baron to make an identical reproduction of their monumental work consisting of 640 enamelled lava stone tiles on which appear the words “I love you” in 300 different languages.
The original work having been inaugurated more than 20 years ago, the team had to start from scratch. The files and the composition of the blue so characteristic of the tiles having been lost, it was necessary to start by photographing one by one each of these tiles in order to be able to faithfully redraw the different calligraphy. Then came the time to do several dozen trials and tests in order to succeed in reproducing the desired blue.
They were not at the end of their surprises since they later discovered that the tiles had been printed according to a particular enamelling technique. Despite all these challenges and thanks to the confidence of the artists and the France China Partnership association (at the initiative of the project), the tiles were produced and presented in the Empreinte workshops before starting their long journey to the other side of the world. The Empreinte team are proud to have been able to take part and to promote the excellence of French know-how as far as China.
You don’t have to go as far as China to see what Empreinte can do for you – visit them on their stand at LANDSCAPE at the NEC in Birmingham this September.

CHRIS HULLGREENBOOK LANDSCAPE DESIGN
At Greenbook Landscape Design, they’re all about sustainability. It’s no secret that our planet is struggling, and as landscapers, designers and horticulturalists, they want to do their part to help. That’s why they’re all about using locally sourced materials and sustainable construction methods in their work.
The team are pleased to share one of their recent projects that showcases this. This bespoke garden room was hand built using locally sourced, sustainably grown timber and UK-sourced materials. And let me tell you, it’s totally different from your standard garden room!
Their client wanted a garden room that was also an art studio as she is a painter and a potter, so it had to be both beautiful and practical. What makes this design unique are the scalloped shingles and large black Crittall style windows with a generous overhang, really helping to bed the room into the recently planted garden. The room is an angular shape to maximise every inch of the garden.
@landscapeevent #Landscape2023 LANDSCAPESHOW.CO.UK 12
The construction timber is Douglas fir and the cladding is Western Red Cedar, which was all sourced and milled in a North Devon woodland. They then painstakingly cut every Cedar shingle into the unique scalloped shape. It took some time, but it was worth it to add that personal touch to the project. They added a Sedum roof to increase biodiversity and the roof also harvests water into a reflective Corten bowl that the birds absolutely love. Inside the garden room, they went for a high-end and durable approach with (locally sourced) bespoke live edge oak desks, whilst English limestone floors provide a solid surface underfoot.
It’s not just about doing their part for the planet; it’s also about creating truly unique, one-of-a-kind outdoor spaces that their clients can be proud of.
Chris Hull from Greenbook Landscape Design will be taking part in the panel discussions on Garden and Landscaping Careers as part of the Discovery Day at LANDSCAPE on the 28th September 2023. Register to visit for free and learn how he got to where he is today.

GAIAGO
Leading soil solutions now available in the UK
Following on from the successful launch into the UK and Irish market at this year’s LAMMA show, Gaiago is encouraged by the interest and commitment to its sustainable products. Gaiago’s portfolio harnesses the very latest innovation for revitalising soils, any farmer, grower, horticulturist or land manager’s biggest asset. The solutions consist of unique formulations of natural elements, protecting yields and empowering growers to reduce reliance on more traditional synthetic plant protection products. Products are registered as biostimulants under the new European regulation and are now available in the UK. The current portfolio is supported by a strong R&D pipeline developed both internally and externally, notably through a joint-venture with a renowned Agricultural University, UniLaSalle.
Soils - understanding the problem
As a global issue, it is clear that there is a need to embrace and engage with a new way of thinking around soils. Soils should be
treated as one of the biggest assets we have to avoid the continuing loss of fertility and current negative impacts on nature. Gaiago is making the change within soils and their whole team is committed to educating and offering solutions to growers for the production of healthy, fertile, and sustainable products. “Mankind thrives when soils thrive” is Gaiago’s mantra.
Innovative solutions on the ground
Alongside the Gaiago’s leading probiotic for soil, its approved prebiotic biostimulant Nutrigeo® offers improved soil structure in less than 6 months, enhances fertility and growth, and accelerates the humification process - the source of carbon storage in soils.

SAMUEL MOORECONSILIUM HORTUS
On a recently completed project the Consilium Hortus team designed this garden in Kelvedon, Essex for a client and their young family. The client’s brief was to create two distinct spaces which added use to the property and were in line with the heritage of the site.
They designed a bespoke garden room which includes a sauna with a charred timber cladding and a dedicated hot tub space, which sits by the studio space. They have also designed a composite decked area which protrudes over the river that runs through the garden allowing for interaction right up to the river. A louvered pergola and outdoor kitchen sit on the deck to provide an ideal dining and lounging space to enjoy into the later evening.

In 1948, a group of ornamental horticultural representatives from the national grower associations of Western Europe came together in Zurich. Their vision inspired them to form the Association Internationale des Producteurs de l’Horticulture (AIPH – International Association of Horticultural Producers), laying the foundations for an international community that exists to this day.
They champion the power of plants by supporting the ornamental horticultural industry – that’s the breeders and growers that grow the plants that enhance lives, advance societies, and sustain our planet for this generation and the next.
Intelligently designed green space improves our environment, human well-being, social cohesion, and economies. They lead global thinking on the successful integration of nature into the built environment through our Green City initiative, which promotes the essential role of plants in creating vibrant urban areas in which people and businesses can thrive.
Since 1960, AIPH has been the approving body of Horticultural Expos: major international events lasting up to six months and covering park areas from 25 to 500 hectares. These Expos create gardens, pavilions, events, and attractions that delight millions of visitors.
Their mission is to reignite and uphold an appreciation of flowers, plants, trees, and shrubs. They publish FloraCulture International and partner with green industry events like LANDSCAPE –The Industry Trade Show.

DAVID STEVENS - DAVID STEVENS INTERNATIONAL
Planting for People
David Stevens takes a look at how garden designers see their own gardens: “As designers, we know that planting is that wonderful element that brings a garden to life and we tailor it to a whole range of considerations that include the setting, soil, microclimate, existing trees, shrubs and perennials, and of course not least, our clients. But if it’s our own garden what then, is it an indulgence, piecemeal, easy to maintain, blousy, crisp and architectural, laid back, or a combination of all these?
Over a career of fifty years or more, I have seen great changes in the way that we design and plant gardens, from a predominance of hard landscape in the late 60’s to a far greater awareness of the need for planting to encourage biodiversity, pollinators and respect for the environment. However, I’m not a purest and I have always embraced planting schemes that provide colour and interest across the seasons including a mix of shrubs, hardy perennials, and ground covers. I mix exotics with indigenous to create pattern and drama and am further aware that such a mix does indeed embrace biodiversity.
@landscapeevent #Landscape2023 LANDSCAPESHOW.CO.UK 20
In our new garden, I have recycled huge amounts of buried stone, brick, and other materials that have been used for paths and paving to minimize the overall carbon footprint, for the deck I am using English Chestnut, and the plants I have sourced from local nurseries wherever possible.” Join David at LANDSCAPE 2023 where he will be hosting a CPD seminar session and taking a look at his own garden and others to see just how we can meld hard and soft together. As he says, “after all, that is just what a garden should be, a balance and place for everything and everyone that uses it.”
LANDSCAPE – The Industry Trade Show is a key event in the year for The Association of Professional Landscapers. (APL)
They really look forward to being there. It provides The APL with a great opportunity to see existing members, but also promote ourselves to potential new members that may wish to benefit from being part of The APL community. It also gives them another chance to host their now regular slot “Landscapers Question Time”.
For those who are not aware, The APL is a subgroup within the parent company The Horticultural Trades Association. (HTA).
The APL comprises of accredited landscape companies who design, build and maintain gardens throughout the UK. Along with their initial inspection, each member is re-inspected regularly to ensure they hold up to date insurances, comply with all health and safety legislation and their quality of work is to the highest possible standard.
On top of that, The APL is a landscaping scheme operator of TrustMark, a Government endorsed initiative that promotes professional trades to consumers. They inspect The APL, so they can inspect you. So, if you want to benefit from what is in fact 3 memberships for the price of one, then come along for a chat at this year’s LANDSCAPE 2023 in Birmingham NEC.

CHICHESTER STONEWORKS
Chichester Stone Creations is an exciting new project launched in 2022 by Chichester Stoneworks and they are pleased to announce that their products are now available to purchase via their shop on Etsy! They update their listings regularly so be sure to ‘favourite’ them so that you’re notified of new products. They currently have natural stone hand-finished benches available in 3 different styles, and will soon be adding various water features and other garden design pieces, so keep your eyes peeled for these.
One of their most recent projects at Chichester Stoneworks was to re-create St Joseph, the Patron Saint of the Universal Church. They used a wooden statue as a template and over a period of 12 weeks, re-created him in Portland stone. There are a few last-minute tweaks to make before he is ready to be fixed, but the team are sure you will agree, it’s an amazing piece and one they are very proud of. Last year they also completed the restoration of The Weigh House in Southampton. The Weigh House is an historic building with a fascinating history. In the mid thirteenth century, it housed the royal Tron, or weigh beam, scales and weights. Known in medieval times as the Peysage or Poysage House (from the Old French ‘peser’
@landscapeevent #Landscape2023 LANDSCAPESHOW.CO.UK 26
meaning to weigh) it was where merchandise, particularly wool, was weighed to assess the amount of customs due before they were sent from Southampton. What a transformation from before to after!
Find out more at LANDSCAPE – The Industry Trade Show on the 27th & 28th September at the NEC, Birmingham where you can meet the Chichester Stoneworks team.

ADTRAK
5 top tips on how to improve your websiteby Adtrak, Digital Marketing Agency
A website is the foundation of your digital marketing. As websites are the primary avenue for people finding a business online, online presence has a huge impact on success. Therefore, the quality and usability of a site undoubtedly impacts results. Here are Adtrak’s five top tips on how you can improve your website.
Several routes to contact
Have you considered if your potential customers have a preferred way of contacting you? Your website needs to allow for those different routes. For example, do you have a phone number and an email address visible? Perhaps a call back request or do your customers prefer a live chat box?
Local presence
It’s imperative to show your key locations throughout your site. A local phone number/s, focused text, keywords and pages that are dedicated to a specific area will show people where you operate.
Location targeting is one of the most effective ways of growth and expanding your service area. You can do this on your website and via key digital marketing channels (SEO, PPC, Social Media advertising) and adapt your campaigns and website based on the user’s location.
Qualified Business
Adding accreditations, associations, insurance and licenses to your site builds trust with the user and will reaffirm the quality of your work / service.
Above the fold
The term ‘above the fold’ means what a site looks like before you scroll down. Have a look at your website and see if all the key information is visible as a visitor lands on your page. Do you think people can fully understand what your business does and stands for by just looking ‘above the fold’?
Do you have reviews?
Online reviews are incredibly valuable for attracting potential customers and can ultimately influence consumer’s opinion. Furthermore, Google Business reviews can help your website rank and stand out from the competition.

Over the last few years, Naomi Ferrett-Cohen and her team have been working on a wide range of exciting new projects for private and commercial clients, including building a show garden at the first ever RHS Chelsea Flower Show built in September due to delays from the pandemic. This show garden was rebuilt as a memorial garden at Wexham hospital in Slough in 2022, which has been one of the most meaningful gardens that they have built to date. To know that the garden brings so much happiness to so many visitors, patients and staff is incredibly touching and rewarding.
One of the most unusual and challenging gardens that they are currently working on, is a new residential project in King’s Cross. The design itself has pushed them creatively, as the spaces themselves are tiny, but they need to exude style and drama to complement the existing design of the property. They have been researching new materials and planting styles to maximise the potential of these small spaces and the level of planning involved is almost on the scale of a show garden build, with many practical challenges and constraints to consider. They feel very lucky to be working with an incredible team of landscape contractors and consultants to transform their ideas into

reality, and can’t wait to see this project being built later this year.
Join Naomi and Tish Potter at LANDSCAPE 2023 on Thursday 28th September where they will be hosting a session on “Sculpture in Garden Design - From Gnome to Dome - What Counts as ‘Art’ and How to Design Around it”.
Birmingham and Black Country Wildlife Trust and Warwickshire Wildlife Trust are proud to be in partnership with LANDSCAPE – The Industry Trade Show for the second year running.
The Wildlife Trusts are a group of 46 individual charities working for nature’s recovery across land and see around the UK with an ambition to see 30% of our landscape managed for the benefit of wildlife by 2030.
The UK is one of the most nature-depleted countries and the Wildlife Trusts are encouraging more people to take individual action to reverse this decline. Gardens and other outdoor spaces in our communities are an important resource as an opportunity to create habitat and corridors for wildlife to thrive.
This year’s garden design competition has a focus on urban and non-traditional garden spaces to encourage entrants to think more creatively about how outdoor spaces can support nature’s recovery.

NORTHOVER
- KMGD
KMGD are an award-winning garden design team in Kent.
Karen McClure & the team deliver first-class service alongside creative and bold designs. They recently scooped a BALI Award for Accredited Designer and Contractor category with Verde Landscapes for work on the ‘Great Art Picks up Where Nature Ends’ garden. Alliances with landscapers, suppliers and industry colleagues are important to KMGD as well as attending industry events enabling them to learn and connect.
KMGD work hard on the administration of their stages and processes, including the implementation of a project monitoring service that supports both client and landscaper. They continue to evaluate, learn and evolve to improve their efficiency and services they provide.
The year has been busy, with many beautiful garden designs being built. Including an oriental inspired garden reflecting the stunning architecture of the clients house, an entertaining terrace for a professional PR couple
inspired by their bold interiors and a client who is as obsessed about plants as they are! A particular highlight was collaborating with the team at Corkers to design a show garden. KMGD embrace the challenge to make each garden unique to reflect the style, character and personality of their clients.
Outside of work, the team are keen to utilise the business to give back where they can. They recently contributed donations with their landscape industry friends for a fundraising event in aid of Pickering cancer centre, which contributed to the £33,000 raised!
KMGD are looking forward to speaking at the forthcoming LANDSCAPE 2023. Join them on Wednesday 27th of September.

ELVEDEN INSTANT HEDGE
Elveden Instant Hedge are now strongly considered a ‘go to’ supplier for all hedging requirements across the industry – whether for private gardens, public realm or commercial projects.
The most recent project for Network Rail has proved to be a huge success with the team at Elveden working closely with Railscapes on a biodiversity and carbon neutral commitment trial to replace traditional fencing with a native hedge mix. This initial trial across 5 sites used 1,500m of UK grown hedge to provide a sustainable vegetation offering when compared to fencing – perfect for upscaling the biodiversity alongside rail lines and creating further opportunities for carbon offsetting.
The implementation of the trial has taken many years of research and development to try and find suitable alternatives which would meet the requirements of ‘non-traditional’ snow drift fencing and security alongside screening and noise absorption. Elveden Instant Hedge have proven to be a fantastic resource of both product and knowledge which was invaluable for this project.
Andy Hood, Head of Railscape Environmental and Sustainability Division says: “We spoke to Kevin at Elveden Instant Hedges and discussed our requirements. After a fantastic tour of the Elveden Estate we placed our order. That was our first time utilising the services of Kevin, Ben & Luvena and the team, and they have definitely shone, going above and beyond to get us exactly what we need, and they deliver on time, every time! We can 100% recommend Elveden Instant Hedges, and they are now our sole supplier for all of our “instant hedge” projects.”
See for yourself and meet the wonderful team on their stand at LANDSCAPE at the NEC in Birmingham this September.

DAVID HEDGES-GOWERTHE LAWN ASSOCIATION
Real lawns are back in business! And thanks to The Lawn Association’s partnership with LANDSCAPE 2023, designers, architects and constructors can learn more about the enormous benefits lawns bring to garden landscaping, wildlife – and people!
David Hedges-Gower, the UK’s leading lawn expert and advisor to national heritage organisations, created The Lawn Association to help people better understand the value of living lawns and to distinguish between truly sustainable lawn care and the ‘sustainable claims’ used in aggressive marketing.
“True sustainability simply means using only natural methods and applications to maintain a fantastic heathy lawn – native grasses that will last, conditioning the soil from the outset, and organic feeds designed to keep those soils in top health. And by designing and constructing it correctly from the start, a sustainable lawn will deliver fantastic value year on year.”
@landscapeevent #Landscape2023 LANDSCAPESHOW.CO.UK 36
Promoting better education and easier access to the best tools, equipment and organic fertilisers is just part of the Association’s work. Helping designers, landscapers and architects to incorporate living lawns into their work is the other. There’s never been a better time and better help to include fantastic British lawns in today’s designs.
Join David on Wednesday the 27th September at LANDSCAPE – The industry Trade Show where he will be holding a CPD accredited seminar. Register to attend for free and be part of the conversation.

ASCALON DESIGN
Ascalon Design Structures Allow Garden Landscaping to Reach New Heights
Structural pieces are a key way of adding height and interest to the garden, as well as creating divisions between garden spaces. They are therefore a core component in the growing landscaping trend of creating ‘garden rooms’. As a result, Ascalon Design have seen a huge increase in demand for their wrought iron gazebos, arches, gates and tunnels over the course of 2022 and 2023.
Gazebos in particular are increasing significantly in popularity, as customers seek to utilise them to create impactful dining areas, as well as create stunning focal points in their gardens which soar above colourful beds and pots. Large structures such as Ascalon’s 4m Marseille Gazebo have been in high demand over the past season; however, gazebos are not limited to large gardens, with smaller spaces also able to benefit from structures such as Ascalon’s 1.28m width Square Pavilion.
@landscapeevent #Landscape2023 LANDSCAPESHOW.CO.UK 40
Meanwhile, Ascalon’s collection of gates, arches and tunnels have seen significant increase in demand due to their versatility. Whilst ably performing functional roles of adding support and structure in the garden, their highly decorative nature also makes them ornamental, allowing them to enhance the aesthetics of their setting. Arched gates and tunnels are a particularly good way to add both height and structure to a space and can also create a transition point to another area of the garden.
Find out more about Ascalon’s Garden Structures range and pick up a catalogue on the LOFA stand at LANDSCAPE 2023.
Equity, Diversity & Inclusion (EDI) seem to be the buzz words across the built environment sector, but what does this look like for real-world people and for meaningful business success? How do employers understand how to do this work well, to have proper impact (without fear) and to achieve some of those all-important bottom-line impacts that everyone talks about? How do we reach, recruit and retain people from the underrepresented groups that our sector needs?
Building People is a hub for EDI in the Built Environment that brings together a network of organisations that work with under-represented groups to promote and amplify their voices. As well as operating at leadership level to provide support to the sector, they also help with guidance, insight and expertise to aid the creation of inclusive cultures, as well as signposting to the great resources, opportunities and training available and delivered by others across the sector.
The Landscape profession is one that recognises its need to progress in this area and Building People is here to help.

IBRAN
Everybody knows now that the natural world is changing at an ever increasing pace. What isn’t as well known, is how the built landscape and construction itself can play a part in protecting and mitigating against those changes.
That’s why at IBRAN, they have radically changed their focus from being simply a manufacturer of recycled plastic landscaping and construction materials to an industry pioneering, low energy, regionalised manufacturer whose focus is on not just making sustainable products but truly making them sustainably as well. All their supply chains and operations, including their tooling, are run and sourced within a 50 mile radius of their Nottinghamshire HQ.
Within the landscaping or indeed the construction industry, how many products can you confidently say have no effect on climate change whilst being designed and manufactured to enhance projects’ longevity whilst being able to lock waste plastic in forever? Take a trip anywhere in the world and you will see debris and waste discarded carelessly, polluting the land and the water. IBRAN’s ambition has always been clear - let’s stop plastic from making it into the environment in the first place by capturing it and locking it in. They use ocean plastics and plastics from local recycling centres and create durable products for permanent use, enhancing projects and savings.
Their truly eco blueprint is what sets them apart in the industry and it’s what will help you and your company achieve your own environmental ambitions and targets. Together let’s lock in waste plastic for good. Register to attend LANDSCAPE in September this year to meet the IBRAN team.

MICHAEL GRUBBMICHAEL GRUBB STUDIO
The rejuvenation of Whitfield Gardens in central London is now complete, marking further significant progress in Camden Council’s West End Project. The redesigned garden, by LDA Design, forms part of the biggest council-led public realm and transport scheme the borough has ever seen.
The lighting design by Michael Grubb Studio greatly contributes to the use and perception of the space after dark – with warm white light used to enhance both the soft and hard landscape features.
Areas like Whitfield Gardens are vital in bringing people into close contact with nature even in the busiest parts of the city. The gardens now provide an open and well-lit space for movement, events and socialising.

Ferndale project wins “Best in Category” at 2023 APL Awards
Esse Landscapes are pleased to learn that their Ferndale project won “Best in Category” for domestic gardens between £175,000 and £250,000. The garden was designed and created by the team at Esse Landscapes, to provide the ultimate contemporary space for outdoor leisure and entertaining.
The focal point is a large swimming pool with wide steps, allowing bathers to relax and move seamlessly between the kitchen, dining and bar area, all within a Renson canopy. Further outdoor seating provides zones for sunbathing and lounging, enhanced with porcelain-clad raised planters to match the Cinder paving. The pool and garden are lit at night, to provide a stunning panorama. A solar-gain cover and air-source heat pump ensure the pool operates with maximum efficiency.
They received the following testimonial from their clients: “We engaged Esse Landscapes to both design and build our new garden. Working with the space available, they were able to provide us with everything we wanted, from the

MAYLIM
Maylim recently celebrated taking home the prestigious Grand Award at the BALI National Landscape Awards 2022. The project, Exchange Square, was first named the Principal Award winner in the Hard Landscaping Construction (non-domestic) – Over £500K category before winning the prestigious Grand Award, announced at the end of the ceremony. This achievement marks the second time Maylim has won this award, having previously won it in 2017 for their work on One Tower Bridge.
The BALI National Landscape Awards are widely regarded as Europe’s most important landscaping industry awards. The ceremony is held annually at the iconic JW Marriott Grosvenor House in London.
Exchange Square is a beautiful public park that forms the centrepiece of Broadgate, London’s largest pedestrianised neighbourhood. Suspended above the tracks of Liverpool Street Station, and features a unique landscape design with generously planted borders, trees, and four times more green space than the previous public realm. British
Land appointed Maylim as Principal Contractor to deliver the project as part of Architect DSDHA’s Broadgate Public Realm Framework Plan.
The awards judges, led by Chair John Melmoe, jointly commented that Exchange Square is an ‘exemplar of public realm landscaping excellence, fully deserving of the Grand Award, but also a lesson in finding and pursuing alternative solutions to the challenges faced by contractors who are replacing existing hard landscapes’.
Maylim is committed to creating and delivering high-quality public spaces that enhance the built environment. Their award-winning work is a testament to their passion for the industry.
Register to attend LANDSCAPE 2023 in September to meet the Maylim team and see how they can help with your next project.

RICHARD ADAM LANDSCAPES
The team at Richard Adams Landscapes were absolutely thrilled to win ‘best in category’ at the 2023 APL awards earlier this year, particularly as it was their first ever entry following successful membership the year before. The winning courtyard garden was beautifully designed by Sue Townsend, a Suffolk-based garden designer, and their team successfully brought her vision to light. After many years of pondering about the risks of setting up a landscaping business (despite having 17 years’ experience in the industry), they took the plunge in March 2020. Without pointing out the obvious, this was a tricky time to navigate previously unchartered waters in more ways than one, so this award really is the icing on the cake!
The gardens they create showcase the essence of their customers’ needs and wishes, and over the years they have noted an increasing trend for social spaces and outdoor dining incorporating structures such as roofedpergolas, outdoor kitchens, and discreet, screened areas of a larger garden. The trend for porcelain patios continues to be strong due to their versatility and ever-increasing range of products.
Their team consists of a fantastic mix of skilled landscapers and apprentice learners who all share a positive ‘can-do’ attitude and an amazing work ethic. I believe the team are a huge part of what has made us successful to date and hopefully we will keep growing in the right direction.
The Association of Professional Landscapers will be representing the association as well as all of the APL Award Winners at LANDSCAPE this year. Register to attend the show and check out all the winners and the projects.
WILDLIFE TRUSTS
Our wildlife is in trouble. The UK is now one of the most nature depleted countries on Earth and 15% of all of our wildlife is under threat from extinction. But it’s not too late, the Wildlife Trusts are on a mission to restore a third of the UK’s land and seas for nature by 2030. Everyone, everywhere, should have access to nature and the joy and health benefits it brings.
Each Wildlife Trust is an independent charity formed by people getting together to make a positive difference for wildlife, climate and future generations. Across the UK the Wildlife Trusts care for 2,300 diverse and beautiful nature reserves and work with others to manage their land for nature too. The Wildlife Trusts are embarking on a new strategy with a bold goal that, by 2030, nature will be in recovery with abundant and diverse wildlife everywhere, and that natural processes will be creating wilder landscapes where people and nature thrive.
The Landscape industry can play a huge role in nature’s recovery by designing and delivering nature rich projects that help our wildlife to thrive, combat climate change and benefit people’s mental and physical health. Why not come along and hear more about how you can take action for wildlife when you visit LANDSCAPE – The Industry Trade Show later this year. Director of Living Landscapes at Warwickshire Wildlife Trust, Ian Jelley will be running a seminar session on Wednesday 27th September looking at “A Holistic Approach to Urban Design. How Designing in Nature Can Have Multiple Benefits”.
GREENFIX
Tree Root Protection for a new Eco Home
In 2022 Greenfix were contacted by an Arboricultural & Urban Forestry Consultant in Scotland regarding the protection of existing trees during the construction of a new eco home. The site located in Liff, Angus has several mature trees which required a Tree Root Protection System to be installed during construction. The project involved demolition followed by the construction of the new eco property. During construction, there was a need for crane pads and roadways which would allow for heavy construction vehicles.
Following discussions between the Consultant and Greenfix’s Tree Root Protection expert Roy Partington, the Geoweb® three-dimensional cellular confinement system was put forward. The Geoweb Tree Root Protection system is made from high-quality HDPE and allows loads to be distributed laterally across the cell system to prevent compaction of the ground below.
@landscapeevent #Landscape2023 LANDSCAPESHOW.CO.UK 54
For this project, there was no long-term need for the Tree Root Protection system as following construction any vehicle traffic would be diverted away from the trees. Due to this, the contractors decided to use the Geoweb as a temporary measure and following the end of construction the Geoweb panels were removed and recycled. The stone infill was then utilised for other products on the property to ensure there was no waste.
Find out how you Greenfix can help with your next project at LANDSCAPE 2023.

PES TECHNOLOGIES
From farming to front lawns: PES Technologies is bringing its revolutionary soil health assessments into the world of landscaping.
PES Technologies provide industry-leading soil health analyses through their handheld machines for fast, accurate assessments of agricultural soils. So, what are they doing at LANDSCAPE 2023?
Soil health, and the benefits it brings to above-ground plant growth, is a vital factor for all landscapes to flourish, from agriculture to golf courses. Benchmarks and rapid testing are vital for diagnosing issues and determining whether treatments put in place are having the desired effect. These treatments can be expensive – the price of fertiliser reached highs of £841/t last year, not to mention accompanying environmental costs. It is more important than ever to make data-driven decisions on what nutrients are in soil when making deliberate and responsible landscapes.
So how does PES’s analysis work? A small soil sample is placed into the machine and analysed, with results delivered to your phone in five minutes, all while in-field. Just like training a truffle-hunting dog, PES’ test sniffs out signatures from the microbial community, while the machine learning ‘brain’ is trained to provide functional information on soils’ biological, chemical, and physical factors to guide management decisions; there’s no need for additional lab data, which can take 2-6 weeks to receive.
Landscaping can benefit hugely from soil analysis insights. PES are looking to contribute to the landscaping industry and welcome new partners who share their vision of the future of soil health measurement.
Visit them at LANDSCAPE – The Industry Trade Show for the very first time in September

ELMTEC
Garden designers and landscape architects and designers use SketchUp to communicate their vision and bring their clients’ ideas to life. Carly Tong Garden Design talks about her design philosophy and using SketchUp. The last few years have taught many of us a lot about how we use and occupy available outdoor spaces; gardens, patios, yards, balconies and window boxes, all are important connections to an outdoor space in our immediate vicinity. These spaces provide many of us with solace, places to contemplate, busy ourselves, plant, create and more. Carly is an avid SketchUp user and explains her inspiration for one of her latest designs.
“Visiting historical gardens, Italian gardens being a fond favourite, that’s where I derive much of my design influences from. The late John Brooke’s (renowned landscape designer) creation of garden rooms to enable a garden to become a liveable space and an extension of the home is another strong influence in my design processes. Brooke introduced this philosophy in his book, A Room Outside, a classic that has considerable relevance today.”
Register to attend LANDSCAPE 2023 to talk to Elmtec about how SketchUp can help you with your designs.

KONIGOUTDOOR
Al fresco luxury with KönigOutdoor
KönigOutdoor is a specialist in high-end, quality designs for outdoor living and dining; and has created many stunning schemes for homeowners and designers alike all over the UK.
A recent example is this beautiful space designed by Stevens Design. The clients wanted to transform the outside space into an “entertaining haven” as they love to cook and spend time with friends and family – outside! It was important that this space was functional as well as being magical to the eye. Nestled between two outbuildings is where you will find the outdoor kitchen hub.
The homeowners’ brief was to source a stone fronted, handleless kitchen with the quality and durability of an indoor kitchen but built to withstand the outdoor elements. The KönigOutdoor team brought the concept and design to life and, most importantly, met the homeowner’s requirements.
A high-grade, weatherproof carcass was used along with a sintered stone surface which is heat-, scratch-, stain-,
@landscapeevent #Landscape2023 LANDSCAPESHOW.CO.UK 76
frost- and UV ray-resistant – perfect for outdoors! The door fronts are Iron Corten Satin by Neolith and the work surfaces are Absolute Black Granite. The granite is leathered to create an “ageing” theme; which can also be seen in the surrounding oak and floor tiles which are a light grey with rust/orange flecks.
Königstone provides quartz and natural stone products of the highest quality for use as surfaces in kitchens and bathrooms. Königstone has developed strong relationships to understand the capabilities and ethics of its suppliers and has been able to collaborate on developing new colours. It only supplies approved fabricators and installers to ensure each homeowner’s project is in good hands from start to finish.
Königstone will be exhibiting at LANDSCAPE – The Industry Trade Show for the first time this year. Register to attend the exhibition for free and meet them to see a selection of what they can do.

Nicolas has a deep passion and a love of stone its ancient and iconic usage being as relevant today as it was 30,000 years ago. STRAIGHTCURVE
Straightcurve’s range of high-quality weathering steel garden edging, raised garden bed, and planter box systems continues to delight the UK’s professional landscapers, landscape designers, and their clients.
Feedback from customers illustrates that the Straightcurve product range is producing better project outcomes (quicker, easier, safer, neater, and smarter installations) with a family of metal edging systems that give designers more scope to express their creativity and landscapers the ability to deliver the design brief, regardless of site conditions.
In this example from Designs For All Seasons, Straightcurve’s Flex Garden Edging allowed designer Sacha’s vision of a sustainable garden with beautifully curved borders to be perfectly delivered by the team at Royal Gardens Ltd.
When asked to comment on the range after several purchases, a recent reviewer said Straightcurve is “A great, (relatively) simple product that gives great definition to a modern garden. We’ve used flex and straight edging, as well as a couple of taller pieces for
@landscapeevent #Landscape2023 LANDSCAPESHOW.CO.UK 82
round raised beds. Once the weathering of the corten has happened it gives a sharp but colour-blended aspect to our beds, driveway, and lawns. We’d previously used some black powder-coated edging for a path from another supplier, and this is head and shoulders better in appearance, installation, and overall value for money.”

THE PLANT HEALTH ALLIANCE
The Plant Health Alliance and the Plant Healthy Certification Scheme
The Plant Health Alliance is a cross-sectoral group of organisations spanning ornamental horticulture, forestry and general land management, it includes trade associations, environmental NGOs and government agencies. The purpose of the Alliance is to promote and enhance plant health and biosecurity measures to protect plant species and associated ecosystems in the United Kingdom and beyond. In early 2019, to achieve this purpose, the Alliance published the Plant Health Management Standard which set out the technical requirements for the Plant Healthy Certification Scheme. The Alliance are the Governing Body of the Scheme and oversee its development.
They have gladly partnered with LANDSCAPE – The Industry Trade Show as the Alliance aims to work with all plantspeople to support them to grow, nurture and protect the plants that we rely on for our livelihoods and that all people enjoy as part of our everyday lives.

PATTERNED CONCRETE ®
Holland BloorView Expansion project, which aims to increase the capacity to conduct life-enhancing research for children and youth with disabilities.
Patterned Concrete® Ontario Inc. played a significant role in the Holland BloorView Expansion project by performing the exterior hardscaping with expertise and attention to detail that contributed to the successful implementation of the project’s design. One of the highlights of this project is the state-of-the-art accessible playgrounds that have been designed with utmost care and attention to detail. The playgrounds feature three distinct areas, one for schoolaged children and two for infants and toddlers, each with a variety of play equipment and structures.
The custom-designed elements have been carefully crafted to meet accessibility requirements, ensuring that children of all abilities can enjoy the playgrounds. Holland BloorView Expansion project utilised a combination of materials to create the playgrounds, including concrete, unit paving, and safety surfacing. This thoughtful selection of materials not only ensures the durability and longevity of the playgrounds but also enhances their overall accessibility and safety. The concrete provides a sturdy
@landscapeevent #Landscape2023 LANDSCAPESHOW.CO.UK 86
foundation for the playgrounds, Ramps and walkways while the unit paving adds texture and visual interest to the space. The safety surfacing is a crucial element that has been creatively applied to provide an additional layer of protection for children as they play.
All the work and its accessibility while the hospital was in full use proved to be one of the challenges. The work was only accessible with special hoisting techniques from the east side of the property , which acts as the podium 30’ off the ground level. The work entailed detailed removals and preparation for all the different improvements including waterproofing the existing concrete suspended slab.
Patterned Concrete® Global takes great pride in the remarkable accomplishment of Patterned Concrete® Ontario’s development. They will be exhibiting for the first time at LANDSCAPE – The Industry Trade Show this year. Come along and meet the team.

Their main task was to maintain and restore these gardens, over three years to be precise and with previous experiences of large communal gardens. They restored these gardens with no budget some small offerings from residents and some existing stock which were planted into schemes that gave interest in every area of the garden. They would plant up by dividing and transplanting including certain shrubs, utilised seeds too. This gave a natural feel to the gardens but within a large scheme.
One Resident said, “not your typical generic garden you see on estates”.

Ivy covered all external beds, plants so overgrown, shrubs trees dying through congestion. Three years later with challenges, perseverance the gardens opened and were formalised utilising all natural materials creatively. An oasis for the residents. The scheme is flowery, light and open with formal training of shrub and soft but ordered, naturalist planting. Your eye is carried through the gardens.

JACQ & WILL’S LANDSCAPES
As people’s lives get busier and our climate changes so are the types of gardens we are designing. In the South of Cambridge they are seeing a rise in the need for gardens that can withstand extreme temperatures whilst also being low maintenance. With these requirements being so sought after it is important to us that we place an emphasis on nature. Jacq & Will’s Landscapes like to create contemporary gardens using natural materials and they believe plants are the stars of the show!
Back in 2021 their client came to us wanting a front garden that was able to fit 2 cars whilst also being low maintenance and a joy to look at all year round. From this brief Will designed a contemporary dry garden using a combination of gravel, sandstone paviours and river cobbles; a curved raised planting bed was made from vertical oak sleepers and was then mirrored by a curved sleeper wall, these were incorporated to create organic geometry throughout the garden pairing well with the curved pathway leading to the front door. A beautiful willow fence was then included on the longest

boundary to enhance the natural feeling of the garden. Finally, we planted in and around the beds with drought tolerant plants which had a cottage garden feel to fit in with the surrounding village.
They are happy to say the garden has established well 2 years on and it has won a Gold Award at the 2023 Association of Professional Landscapers Awards.

Women In Natural Stone (WINS) has been established to provide networking and support for women in the stone industry and wider architectural and construction sectors. WINS is the latest initiative from the Stone Federation, the trade association for natural stone sector in the UK. As well as supporting those within the industry, the group also aims to encourage the next generation of women into construction, and as numbers grow, WINS will be able to establish a system of mentoring.
They’re delighted to be exhibiting at LANDSCAPE – The Industry Trade Show again and are looking forward to being part of the ‘Women in the Industry’ day at the event. They look forward to connecting with landscape designers, architects and natural stone companies and spreading the word on the networking and support opportunities that WINS offers.
There are so many fantastic women within our industry, and they can’t wait to meet you all!

Caerphilly Castle Habitat Enhancement
CADW procured a site-wide Habitat Enhancement and Management Plan for Caerphilly Castle. This has enabled CADW to help deliver their obligations under the Wellbeing of Future Generations (Wales) Act (2015) and the Environment (Wales) Act (2016).
Part of the works required biodiversity enhancement measures which were both flexible and appropriate to the site, respecting the archaeology and striking a balance between the different uses of the castle from fishing to wedding functions.
The surrounding moat had large areas devoid of vegetation with bare soils exposed along the water’s edge creating a barren site with little biodiversity. A very large Canadian Geese population has also adversely affected the surrounding banks with heavily cropped banks and compacted soils preventing wildflower and marginal plant establishment.
In order to resolve this, Salix supplied and installed over 700m of pre-established coir rolls as an organic revetment,
@landscapeevent #Landscape2023 LANDSCAPESHOW.CO.UK 92
preventing soil erosion along the toe of the moat. The 3m long x 300mm diameter rolls contain a variety of native marginal plants including Lythrum salicaria, Iris psuedacorus, Juncus effusus, Carex acutiformis and Phalaris arundinacea. These plants provide a good selection of flowering species to attract pollinators and strong root structures to bind the soils and prevent further erosion. The mature planting within the coir rolls is established in wet-beds at our 28 acre in-house wetland nursery for a minimum of 6 months. This solution speeds up the rate of establishment on site and provides instant wetland habitat, which will also improve water quality over time.
Boat access was required to bring materials adjacent to site works. The coir rolls and Chestnut stakes were easily transported by boat and manually installed. The installation works were carried out in March 2021. Just over a year later in July 2022, the area has been transformed into a wildlife haven capable of supporting a diverse range of species as well as visually enhancing the stunning castle landscape.
Salix will be exhibiting a selection at LANDSCAPE 2023. Make sure you register to come along and meet them there.

JUANITA SHEPHERDDEPARTMENT FOR EDUCATION
The UK is one of the most nature-depleted countries in Europe. With around 24,000 premises and 16 million people in education, the education sector plays a unique role in presenting opportunities for positive change.
In 2022 the Department for Education (DfE) published a Sustainability and Climate Change strategy to inspire action at home and abroad. By bringing together existing work from within the department and across government, talking to young people and key stakeholders, the new team launched a holistic strategy that recognised and built upon the key role of education in tackling the climate crisis.
Outdoor Classroom Day, in May, was used to highlight one of the initiatives in that strategy; the National Education Nature Park and Climate Action Award scheme. Pathfinder schools, working with the DfE’s delivery partner, the Natural History Museum, gathered at RHS Bridgewater to showcase a small sample of some of the great educational activities that will be freely available to all education settings. Using geospatial tools from Esri, another delivery partner, pupils were able to demonstrate how they can map the biodiversity of their education setting and see it change over time. The programme rolls out more widely in autumn 2023.
Their strategy provides learners with the resources to live, learn, work and participate in a changing world. Through climate education, green skills and careers, the DfE is helping to create a sustainable future, developing the skills needed for a net zero economy in children and young people, and supporting our sectors to adapt to the impact of climate change.
Join Juanita Shepherd, Policy Lead at the Department for Education on Thursday 28th September at LANDSCAPE 2023 where she will be hosting a seminar session on The National Education Nature Park and Climate Action Awards.

URBIS SCHREDER AND VALMONT STRUCTURES
TECEO on iconic triple mast lighting columns creates a unique lighting structure to enhance this busy shopping precinct both by day and by night.
In 2017, Coventry Council announced a ten-year strategic plan to enable the city to become a culturally attractive, vibrant and prosperous city for everyone who lives, works and studies there. The strategy aims to make Coventry a leading city of culture and bring future economic success and a better quality of life for residents.
A 15-acre city centre regeneration plan was launched to transform the amenities for an improved social and cultural life. As part of this plan, the Bull Yard shopping precinct, a well-known and well-loved area of the city centre was redeveloped with a fresh new design that focuses on nature. The regeneration included a water feature, play area, seating and an LGBTQ+ rainbow crossing.
Unique lighting structure to reflect nature
Balfour Beatty, who was leading the project, commissioned Schréder to provide an original yet sustainable lighting solution for the Bull Yard area. It had to reflect the new focus on nature and encourage people, especially families, to spend more time enjoying the facilities once the sun sets. The team worked with Valmont to design a beautiful, bespoke triple mast column to host the highlyefficient TECEO luminaire.
Sustainable approach
Five single wooden poles with the TECEO were installed at the water park area and five triple columns in the heart of the Bull Yard. The low-energy TECEO LED luminaire delivers a gentle white light that creates a warm and welcoming night-time atmosphere in line with the brief. The wooden masts have been specially treated to avoid rotting and corrosion and are easy to maintain.
This unique lighting structure is one of very few triple lighting columns in the world and is truly a work of art to admire. You could even say that it has created an iconic landmark in the area. Local residents are delighted with the high-quality public space that not only provides an effective pedestrian thoroughfare but also a place to sit, play relax in a sustainable way.
“It’s a space that can be enjoyed by everyone, whether you’re stopping to eat at benches, a family enjoying the play area, stopping to admire the water feature or just passing through, it’s a warm welcome to the city centre!”
