The year that was

As we wrap up the year at Landscaping Victoria, it’s a great opportunity to reflect on what we’ve achieved together over the past twelve months.

IAN BARKER

This past year, we continued our mantra of simplify and consolidate, focusing on our members. We prioritised making membership more accessible, enhancing our communication, and strengthening the community within our association.

Looking Back Over the Year

The past year saw Ritchie Hinton step confidently into the role of CEO, bringing a renewed focus on member engagement and community building.

Under his guidance, together with the very talented Bianca Debono, we revitalised Industry Nights, turning them into a regular, valuable space for networking and knowledge sharing.

Ritchie also led efforts to streamline our membership process, removing unnecessary barriers and simplifying categories to ensure a seamless and welcoming experience for all members.

With rising interest rates, many of us have seen a slowdown in workflow, and we expect this to

continue into 2025. In challenging times like these, leaning on those around us who understand is invaluable. I encourage you to connect with your fellow members at every opportunity—it’s the perfect time to support each other and share insights.

In response to members’ desire for improved communication and connection, we expanded our team by adding a marketing officer—an essential role that has helped us engage more deeply with members and shine a spotlight on the landscape community.

We also hosted a variety of webinars and networking events this year, which received strong attendance and positive feedback, underscoring the importance our members place on learning and professional development.

Financial Performance

Our financial performance over the 2023-2024 year was excellent, finishing with a healthy surplus. We are well-positioned to consider using some of these funds to potentially accelerate our strategic goals.

Our revenue streams, supported by membership fees, events, and sponsorships, held steady despite a tough economic environment, and our reserves remain strong.

Looking Ahead

Our commitment to enhancing member value and fostering growth

remains central to our vision for the coming year. We’ll keep advocating on behalf of our members, building relationships with like-minded associations and stakeholders across the industry.

Additionally, we will continue refining our strategies to increase member visibility and ensure that Landscaping Victoria remains an invaluable resource and support network.

Conclusion

Thank you to the Board, to Ritchie and his dedicated team, as well as to all our members for their ongoing support and contributions.

Special thanks go to our outgoing board members, Rob Stewart, Erin Green, and Michele Farrugia, whose dedication and commitment have helped shape the industry for the betterment of all who work in it.

The achievements of the past year reflect the hard work and commitment of our entire Landscaping Victoria community. Looking forward, I’m excited to see us build on this success and reach even greater heights together.

A year of progress

From record-breaking events to new initiatives, the past year has been one of growth and momentum. We’ve simplified processes, expanded our network, and supported members with fresh opportunities—all while celebrating the achievements of the landscaping community.

This edition marks the anniversary of my first full year with Landscaping Victoria.

Over the past 12 months, we’ve seen significant growth and development, and while I can’t mention everything, I’d like to reflect on some highlights.

The Melbourne International Flower & Garden Show was a standout event during my early orientation. Witnessing over 100,000 people flock to the beautiful Royal Exhibition Building in Carlton reminded me of just how connected people are to their gardens and outdoor spaces.

It was a privilege to get a behindthe-scenes look at the event setup—an impressive logistical feat, transforming such a prominent heritage site into a stunning display of plants and colour in just a week.

Shortly after, we held our own flagship event: The Landscape Show 2024. With record numbers of exhibitors and attendees, we were fortunate to enjoy a day of blue skies at Sandown Racecourse.

Our refreshed VBA Learning Hub also drew large crowds. Keynote speakers like Garry Lyon, Fraser Gehrig, and Paul Guerra covered topics ranging from hobby farm machinery to stadium turf and even the broader health of the Victorian economy.

Another area of focus has been revitalising our Industry Event series, designed to enhance networking and peer support opportunities across our diverse membership base, including suppliers, designers, builders, gardeners, and educators.

A significant initiative this year was simplifying our branding to more clearly reflect our purpose and better connect with Victoria’s broader landscaping community. We also streamlined our member application process, which has been well-received and continues to gain traction.

Additionally, we’ve improved our Online Contract service, making it more user-friendly, and expanded our marketing efforts, dedicating more resources to engage existing and prospective members.

As an organisation, we strive to improve the benefits and services we offer to our members. We regularly assess our activities to ensure our resources are used

effectively, maximising value for as many members as possible.

As always, a highlight of this edition is the announcement of the 2024 Victorian Landscape Awards. The Presentation Dinner was a fantastic celebration of the high-quality work our members consistently deliver, adding value to their clients’ properties. Thank you to everyone involved in this annual recognition of industry excellence.

I hope you enjoy this issue of Earthstyle. Be sure to stay connected with Landscaping Victoria online, in print, and at our events throughout 2025 as we continue to grow and strengthen our network.

Crafting a living history

Reflections on the Fern Garden Project: a journey through landscape and legacy.

WAYNE DE KLIJN

The Fern Garden project is more than just a beautifully crafted garden—it’s a testament to vision, dedication, and collaboration.

From the outset, it was an ambitious undertaking with high community expectations.

The Friends of Ballarat Botanical Gardens raised $200,000, along with contributions by other funding bodies.

Being entrusted with this vision was an honour.

Designed by Andrea Proctor’s landscape architecture firm, the garden features an elegant unfurling fern frond motif in the permeable forecourt paving. This design honours the original fern garden, bridging past and present. Our team ensured that every aspect of the build stayed true to this design, merging precision and creativity.

integrates with a more extensive network planned for the entire Botanical Gardens.

The project posed challenges, from Ballarat’s notorious weather to waterlogged site conditions. We repurposed pre-World War I stone for garden edging and features, ensuring sustainability while maintaining a historical connection. Protecting heritage-listed tree root zones required building a steel boardwalk that “floats” over the ground surface to avoid damaging the roots.

Horticultural expertise was key to the garden’s success. We meticulously prepared the beds and tailored planting zones to each species’ needs. Collaborating with Andrea, the Ballarat Botanical Gardens team, and AQL resulted in lush growth and positive public feedback.

A standout feature is the irrigation system, installed by Smart Water. Tailored with dripper lines, misters, and sprays, it meets different plants’ moisture needs and

Reflecting on my journey in landscaping, my passion began during school holidays working with a neighbour in the indoor plant industry. A work experience stint at a nursery led to an apprenticeship, and later, at 21, I founded AQL, which has now thrived for 38 years. Every project has been a stepping stone, deepening my understanding and love for this field.

For those aspiring to work on such transformative projects, my advice is to seize every opportunity. These experiences build teams, create networks, and offer immense personal satisfaction. They’re about creating lasting legacies and inspiring future generations.

Happy gardening.

TURF INSIGHTS

Growing healthy communities , one green space at a time

Sustainable turf practices are transforming green spaces across communities, creating areas that promote connection, wellbeing, and environmental resilience.

COOLABAH TURF

In today’s tech-driven world, creating sustainable, resilient green spaces where people can connect and thrive has never been more important.

At Coolabah Turf, the approach to landscaping goes beyond aesthetics—it’s about cultivating community, well-being, and sustainability. With every turf project, Coolabah Turf is committed to practices that build lasting, healthy green spaces for everyone to enjoy.

Sustainable Turf Practices for Long-Lasting Greenery

Sustainable landscaping is all about the details. The team prioritises climate-resilient turf varieties that adapt to Australia’s unique weather patterns, reducing the need for water, pesticides, and excessive upkeep.

Each turf slab from their farm is AUSGAP-certified, meeting the highest Australian standards for weed-free, pest-free quality to ensure landscapes that remain both beautiful and resilient over time. Through sustainable farming practices and hand-picked turf

varieties, Coolabah Turf offers turf that doesn’t just survive but thrives, enhancing local biodiversity and creating a positive environmental impact.

Bringing Turf Expertise to Community Projects

Coolabah Turf has collaborated on numerous projects across Victoria and southern NSW to create spaces that strengthen communities and support well-being.

Their expertise has benefited schools, parks, and sporting fields, transforming these areas into green spaces where people can gather, play, and unwind.

From turf selection to installation, Coolabah Turf ensures that each project meets community needs, promoting mental well-being, social interaction, and physical activity.

Practical Tips for Landscapers and Contractors

Whether you’re tackling a public park or a backyard, here’s Coolabah Turf’s guiding principles to build sustainable green spaces:

1. Choose resilient turf varieties: Drought-tolerant and pest-resistant varieties that suit your natural

environment will provide long-lasting green coverage with minimal input.

2. Only water your lawn when it needs it: Regular rainfall is usually enough to meet your lawn’s water requirements. If your grass needs a drink, water for longer less frequently, and early in the morning at the coolest part of the day.

3. Feed your lawn with the nutrients it needs: The healthier the lawn, the less susceptible it is to weeds, insects and disease. Fertilising your lawn during summer will help it to remain nourished and healthy.

Green Spaces That Benefit Community Health

Research consistently shows that access to green spaces supports mental health and community pride.

By creating vibrant public spaces with durable, eco-friendly turf, Coolabah Turf strives to make the benefits of nature accessible to everyone. It’s a shift from viewing turf as merely decorative to recognising it as a tool for community well-being and environmental health.

In each project, Coolabah Turf aims to create green spaces that “do good” as well as “look good.”

With every turf installation, the team supports landscapers and communities alike in building beautiful, resilient spaces that help people feel more connected to the outdoors.

Innovating for a sustainable landscaping future

Regen Nurseries is redefining sustainable landscaping with innovative solutions like zero-waste plant trays, urban farming models, and eco-friendly planting formats, all while preserving Victoria’s native biodiversity.

REGEN NURSERIES

For over 25 years, Regen Nurseries (formerly Australian Ecosystems Nursery) has been a leader in ecological restoration, growing millions of native plants that help protect and restore Victoria’s unique ecosystems.

With new innovations, Regen Nurseries continues to push the boundaries of sustainability—addressing some of the most prominent challenges landscapers face today: reducing waste, conserving water, and creating resilient landscapes.

Waste-Free Planting Solutions

Landscapers are all too familiar with the challenge of plastic waste from large-scale planting projects. Single-use pots and trays often end up in landfills, adding to the environmental impact.

To address this, Regen Nurseries has introduced zero-waste plant trays— durable, reusable trays that reduce plastic waste and align with their longstanding commitment to sustainable practices and a circular economy.

“Reducing waste has always been a core part of what we do,” says Tim Sansom, Nursery & Sales Marketing Manager at Regen Nurseries.

“With these trays, we’re taking that commitment even further by setting a new benchmark for environmentally responsible practices.”

Sustainable Urban Farming: A Model for Landscapers

Regen Nurseries is also demonstrating the potential of urban agriculture

with its on-site farm, developed in partnership with Foodcube.

Using advanced wicking beds and large-scale vermicomposting, the farm produces over a tonne of fresh produce annually.

This model shows how sustainable food production can fit seamlessly into urban landscapes—whether it’s a rooftop garden or a backyard.

“Landscapers are uniquely positioned to incorporate these systems into their designs,” explains Tim.

“Our approach here proves that you can create beautiful green spaces that also serve a functional role in producing food for communities.”

Preserving Local Flora: A Commitment to Victoria’s Biodiversity

Regen Nurseries’ work centres on preserving Victoria’s native biodiversity.

Their extensive seed bank, containing thousands of seed lots from Greater Melbourne, Geelong, and the Bass Coast, plays a crucial role in conserving the genetic diversity of the region’s plants.

For landscapers working on wetland or stormwater management projects, Regen Nurseries’ expertise in growing aquatic plants that meet Melbourne Water’s specifications ensures that these ecosystems are restored and maintained to the highest standards.

Cost-Effective Solutions for BudgetConscious Projects

Regen Nurseries’ 600cc plant format is another example of their innovative thinking.

Offering a more budget-friendly and environmentally responsible alternative to the traditional 140mm pot, these plants reduce material waste and improve on-site handling efficiency while supporting better Occupational Health and Safety outcomes for landscapers.

“We designed this format with practicality in mind,” says Tim.

“It’s a solution that’s both cost-effective and sustainable, which is exactly what the industry needs right now.”

A Vision for the Future

As Regen Nurseries continues to evolve, its focus remains firmly on innovation in sustainability and ecological restoration.

With investments in automation, precision seeding equipment, and the use of recycled water from the Eastern Treatment Plant, it is leading the charge in demonstrating how the landscaping industry can work hand-in-hand with nature.

By combining cutting-edge technology with their long-standing environmental commitment, Regen Nurseries inspires landscapers across Victoria to build landscapes that thrive and contribute to the region’s broader ecological health.

‘Closing Loopholes’ change to the Fair Work Act – what you need to know

Discover how recent government reforms impact your business, with new rules on casual employment, contractor classifications, and a ‘right to disconnect’.

SHARROCK PITMAN LEGAL

The Federal Government has introduced significant workplace relations reforms relevant to all businesses under its ‘Closing Loopholes’ changes to the Fair Work Act 2009 (Cth) (FW Act).

Key changes include new rules for casual employees, determining independent contractor status, and the introduction of a ‘right to disconnect.’

New Rules for Casuals

The FW Act now provides that whether an employee is a casual employee is to be determined based on the ‘real substance, practical reality, and true nature’ of the employment relationship rather than looking simply at the terms of the employee’s contract.

Indicators of genuine casual employment include the employee lacking regular hours, being employed only on a short-term basis, and being free to accept or refuse shifts. A casual employee would generally be paid a casual loading.

Employers must provide casual employees with the Casual Employment Information Statement at the start of employment, after

six months, 12 months, and every 12 months after that. For small businesses, the Statement is required at the start of employment and after 12 months of employment.

Qualifying casual employees can request to transition to part-time or full-time employment, and employers can only refuse on reasonable business grounds.

The employee can bring the matter to the Fair Work Commission if a dispute arises.

New Rules for Independent Contractors

Whether a worker is an independent contractor or employee is now determined based on the ‘real substance, practical reality, and true nature’ of the relationship, and not just the terms of a written contract.

Courts and the Fair Work Commission are required to take a more practical approach than previously when assessing the working relationship, moving beyond the previous focus on contractual rights and responsibilities.

A comprehensive written independent contractor agreement remains important, but businesses must also consider the practical realities of the relationship between the parties when engaging independent contractors.

The Right to Disconnect

Employees now have a new ‘right to disconnect’ from work.

This means they can refuse workrelated communications outside of working hours unless the refusal is unreasonable.

Employers who treat employees adversely for not responding to outof-hours contact will risk exposing themselves to General Protections claims under the FW Act.

If disputes over the right to disconnect cannot be resolved internally, the Fair Work Commission has the authority to resolve the issues, including by making binding decisions.

The hardscape features 54 linear metres of rendered walls capped with sleek 10mm steel, forming seating, privacy, and reflection zones. Monolithic Travertine ties the space together, with vein-matched surfaces and steel borders elevating its architectural quality. Mature Birch trees and a striking Acer enhance the green-on-green planting palette, reinforcing the minimalist aesthetic.

Judges praised the project’s precision, craftsmanship, and flawless execution as a testament to Modernist principles.

Introducing the WorkWell Toolkit

Supporting mentally-healthy workplaces, and helping workplace leaders in Victoria prevent mental injury since 2017.

This world-leading program supports employers to make changes within their organisation to prevent mental injury and promote safe and mentally-healthy workplaces.

A key focus of WorkWell is to provide easy-to-digest information about the basics of workplace mental health. It helps employers to understand occupational health and safety (OHS) obligations and responsibilities through a range of funding and knowledgesharing opportunities.

The ‘new normal’ is to ensure that workplace cultures are safe both physically and psychologically. This means making sure that the workrelated factors which can impact workers’ mental health are managed.

You might be thinking ‘That all sounds great – but how exactly do you do that? Where do I even start?’

WorkWell offers free tools and resources as part of the WorkWell Toolkit. The Toolkit also includes an innovative new survey to show you where to prioritise your efforts and help you get started.

The Toolkit has been designed by OHS and mental health specialists, and has a library of resources to support businesses of all sizes. Translated resources are also available in Chinese, Vietnamese and plain English.

The Toolkit contains practical guides and tools to help workplace leaders focus on mental health in their workplace, including:

• Policy templates

• Mental health basics including an introduction to workplace mental health

• Support for a diverse workforce

• A comprehensive list of common workplace issues and how to address them

• Pre-recorded webinars

• A survey to measure the mental health and wellbeing of your workplace so you know the areas to address.

All resources are free to use, and there is no login required. Find the Toolkit on the WorkSafe website www.worksafe.vic.gov.au/workwell-toolkit

LV Member Michele Farrugia shares her top book picks for fresh landscape design inspiration.

Landprints: The Landscape Designs of Bernard

Landprints is an inspiring look at Bernard Trainer’s environmentally conscious approach to landscape design.

The book beautifully captures his talent for combining natural materials with native plants to create landscapes that feel both rustic and refined.

Trainer’s designs stand out for their deep respect for the existing landscape, using repurposed timbers, locally sourced stones, and monochromatic plantings that echo the surrounding environment.

More than a showcase of his work, Landprints offers thoughtful insights into creating harmonious, low-impact spaces that truly honor the land.

Trainer’s style is refreshingly organic, with elements that feel intentionally placed yet effortlessly unstructured.

From soft, textural plantings to gracefully curved paths, his landscapes embrace a simplicity that’s both striking and sustainable.

Landprints invites a new perspective on landscape design—using what’s available, blending each element seamlessly with the surroundings, and creating spaces that feel naturally whole.

Landscape and Garden Design Sketchbooks

Landscape and Garden Design Sketchbooks offers a captivating glimpse into the creative process of 37 designers, revealing how initial ideas take shape through hand-drawn sketches.

Each page reflects a unique design approach, showcasing rough yet evocative lines that capture the rhythms and energy of garden design at its most raw and spontaneous.

For those who appreciate the art of hand-drawing, the book demonstrates how pencil, gouache, and pastels can translate ideas instantly from mind to page, illustrating a truly organic approach to design.

The book champions the value of hand-drawing while recognising the place of digital tools, celebrating how both methods can work together to inspire imaginative landscapes.

With a focus on authentic expression and hands-on creativity, Landscape and Garden Design Sketchbooks reaffirms the beauty of translating ideas directly to paper, making it an inspiring resource for designers and garden enthusiasts alike.

The Encyclopedia of Grasses for Livable Landscapes

The Encyclopedia of Grasses for Livable Landscapes is a comprehensive guide that elevates grasses from background filler to key design elements.

With over 1,000 high-quality photographs, the book details the diverse textures, forms, and colours of grasses that bring movement and contrast to any landscape.

Darke’s approach highlights how grasses thrive in various environments, offering both aesthetic appeal and ecological benefits.

Beyond visual appeal, the book delves into the unique characteristics of grasses and their role in sustainable design, contrasting native and exotic species thoughtfully.

The Encyclopedia of Grasses for Livable Landscapes provides a wealth of insight into using grasses creatively, making it an essential guide for anyone looking to craft sustainable, low-maintenance, and visually captivating landscapes.
