Awards edition

Thank you.

From the Presidents Ian Barker

INCOMING PRESIDENT

Nine days into the role of President, I was thrilled to open proceedings for the 2023 Victorian Landscape Awards and for those who did not attend on the night, I hope you enjoy this edition of Earthstyle that celebrates the outstanding work that made the judges decisions very difficult. The quality of work submitted was nothing short of exceptional, a testament to the immense talent and unwavering dedication within our landscaping community and I applaud the courage of those who entered. For some it is disappointing not to take a trophy back to the office, but every entrant should take pride in their achievements, for as an industry body, we should all be proud of what we are accomplishing together.

David Jarman

A big thank you to Russ Sweetman and David Jarman as they step down from their Board duties: Russ after three years, and whose commitment to right and wrong whilst always maintaining a calm demeanour will be sorely missed; and David who worked hard to ensure that everyone around him was looked after, consistently clearing a path so those around him could succeed. Thank you both. Ian Barker

OUTGOING PRESIDENT

The 2022-2023 year has been nothing short of remarkable. As we look back, we can appreciate that with the challenges posed by the pandemic behind us, we collectively built a foundation of stability and structure in our daily lives. Business generally exhibited a measured slowdown, primarily attributed to multiple interest rate rises, supply chain pressures and the increasing cost of living. The construction sector is poised to remain strong in coming years however, driven by solid growth in residential construction, but we must remain vigilant as rising labour and material costs continue to affect profit margins. Our members need to adapt and ensure that project budgets remain robust and flexible to take full advantage of the opportunities that lie ahead. This year’s Melbourne International Flower and Garden show saw record crowds attend and LVML hosted the Advisory Centre and the Boutique Garden Competition with the usual levels of exceptional service. I extend our thanks to the dedicated volunteers and staff who generously devoted their time to support our presence. One of the standout events this year was again The Landscape Show, which continues to gain momentum and industry support each passing year. As the event's growth is assured, we encourage all Supplier members to actively participate and secure their stands well in advance. Our first industry night in a while was held at Yarrabee & Castlemaine Stone, where members, contractors, suppliers, and staff enjoyed the opportunity to relax with food and a quiet drink, engage in fruitful networking, and strengthen the social fabric of our association. LVML owes a debt of gratitude to our partners and sponsors whose steadfast support is instrumental to our ability to provide essential services and resources to our members. Your unwavering support is the cornerstone of our success, and we recognize that we couldn't achieve what we do without your partnership. Together, we will continue to prosper and grow.

"I hope you enjoy this edition of Earthstyle that celebrates the outstanding work that made the judges decisions very difficult."

The success of Landscaping Victoria is a testament to the tireless dedication of our small but highly committed team. Their unwavering efforts ensure that we deliver maximum benefit to members. We must also acknowledge the invaluable contributions of our members who volunteer their time and energy to assist at LVML events through participation in public-facing shows and exhibitions, and engaging in committee activities. In closing, I would like to thank the LVML executive team for their relentless hard work, dedication, commitment, and steadfast support of our association and its members. I especially extend my gratitude to members for entrusting me to serve you as a Board member for 6 years, the last as President. I have been truly humbled and honored and would encourage everyone to think about nominating one day – it is so rewarding. To all board members I have served beside over the years; your friendship, encouragement, and leadership of our Association are genuinely cherished. The 2023-24 board with Ian Barker at the helm (see page 13 for details) and the executive team led by new CEO Ritchie Hinton are fully committed to supporting our members and delivering increased benefits. In the upcoming year, there is a rich calendar of activity, and the primary focus remains on giving back to our members. I wish you all every success for the future. David Jarman

From the CEOs Megan Flower It is with a profound sense of gratitude and pride that I reflect upon my nine-year journey as the CEO of LVML. I am sure you can understand the mixed emotions that I write my final message with, as it marks the conclusion of my service to this remarkable community.

The benefits of gaining VBA registration

I started in the trade as a landscape labourer in 1989 and quickly realized that this was the path for me, but if I was going to be serious about it, I needed to get qualified. I applied and was accepted into VCAH Burnley in 1990 where I completed the Associated Diploma in Horticulture (Landscape). From there I worked for various Landscape Design / Construction companies for 8 years to increase my skill set until I opened my own business in 1998 – 25 years on and still going! What made you decide to apply for VBA registration? The decision to apply for my registration was an easy one, albeit a long process, for me. I had mainly subcontracted to builders and pool builders and hadn’t needed my registration, until I was offered larger landscape projects. I knew that being qualified and registered was a point of difference between myself and my competition and a legal requirement for works over $10,000. I joined Landscaping Victoria and the Master Builders Association with the view of being the best I can within the Landscape Industry and to let future clients know I was serious and committed to the projects we did.

The biggest challenge for me was time: finding and making time to do your registration. When you run your own business dealing with staff and projects, it's difficult to find time. My suggestion is to allocate the time and commit to it – treat it as a job. Another challenge was obtaining knowledge about the areas I wasn’t sure about such as contract preparation, various legislation requirements and the formal documentation process. And finally, the actual application process was challenging as there were so many documents to collate as well as obtaining industry references for projects you have completed. The best thing I did was to find somebody to help put my application together. So what are the benefits? The benefits far outweigh any of the challenges of applying for my registration. Protection and ‘peace of mind ‘ for both myself and my client in the event that anything goes wrong during the build process. Learning the various aspects that have always presented a challenge like contract administration, insurance and payment terms etc. Being able to talk to people within LV - the industries peak body - that can assist and explain in terms that you can understand.

Dean's top tips on applying for VBA Registration Firstly - Just do it, mate! Take the time to commit to doing it. You may think you don’t need to be registered however if you are doing projects over $10,000 you DO !! Talk to people who have done it- they are a wealth of information in regards to the application and the interview process. Join Landscaping Victoria Master Landscapers: they provide great support for their members. Ask questions, no matter your level of experience, you won't be judged. I’ve always found both the landscaping and building industry very supportive. The interview for the registration with the VBA wasn’t as daunting as I thought it was going to be. They just want to know that you are competent and that you can implement all the necessary requirements that are needed with your registration.

Vice President: Mathew Wandmaker Treasurer: Ros McCully Board Members: Rob Stewart Gary Bond Justin Hart Michele Farrugia Erin Green Nicole Semkin Paul Leesment We are your direct representatives, acting on your behalf. If there is anything you wish to communicate, these individuals are the ones you should reach out to. Your voice matters, and we genuinely want to hear your thoughts and concerns on how we can make the association better.

Our Board

We'd like to take this opportunity to congratulate all new office bearers to the LVML Board, and pass on our thanks to those outgoing members. We say farewell and thank you to David Jarman for his dedication and leadership. David has served a total of 6 years on the Board, the last as President and the previous four and a half as Treasurer. We have no doubt that David's contribution to the Association will continue well beyond his time on the Board. We also say farewell to Russ Sweetman, who made significant contributions to the Association over his three year term, the last as Treasurer. Russ also took on the Wellbeing Ambassador role and we thank him for his time and dedication during his time on the Board. Ian Barker has been elected President as we head into the 58th year of the Association, and Mat Wandmaker steps into the Vice President's role with Ros McCully appointed Treasurer. It is with pleasure that we now welcome two new Directors – Paul Leesment and Nicole Semken. All of these people come to the Board with great passion for the industry, and you will no doubt get an opportunity to get to meet them at various events over the coming months. We encourage you to use the opportunity to speak to them, get to know them, and share your feedback.

We welcome two new directors:

Nicole Semken

Through part of my role dealing with client communication I have spoken to many members of the public who have engaged an unqualified or uninsured landscaper and unfortunately have then suffered financial loss or damage to their properties. It is only after these negative experiences that these clients have sought out a LVML member and seen the benefits of engaging a member. I am therefore very invested in working with like-minded organisations on the board and in the wider LVML community to enhance the organisations public image and strive towards checking for LVML membership being a vital part of every consumers engagement with a company within the landscaping industry."

Paul Leesment "After guiding our Landscape Design & Construction business from strength to strength over the past two decades, I feel it's time to give back to the industry in any way I can. My experience in developing business strategies and compliance, with proven systems & processes that deliver accountability, are worthwhile sharing with other like-minded driven business owners. Through successfully developing a focused leadership program in my own company, I feel that my contribution to the board can assist in staying on mission and help shape the future."

A new era in sustainable commercial turf care After a successful introduction to a select number of European markets during 2022, Husqvarna's ground-breaking robotic solution for commercial turf care management, is finally available in Australia

"We have seen a rapid accelaration of the use of robotic lawn movers from commercial turf care in Europe over the past few years and it's clear that CEORA™ is a solution that lives up to the expectations and hopes of greenkeepers, golf course and sports fields managers, and we are looking forward to seeing the same acceleration occur here in Australia." Pauline Nilsson, Vice President at Husqvarna Australia. Reducing your carbon footprint The benefits of choosing CEORA™ are many, especially for professionals caring for large grass areas. Switching from conventional commercial mowers, is estimated to result in cost savings up to 50 per cent^, and the electric operation of autonomous machines, minimises noise and reduces CO2 emissions significantly.

7 Common Mistakes Landscapers Make When Designing Water Features Michael McKay, Water Quality Solutions Water features are a great asset to landscapers - they can take a landscape design to the next level - but not well thought out and they can turn a project into a headache. Here are 7 mistakes we see landscapers commonly make with water features and how to avoid them. Our goal is to make water your friend and a tool you're excited to share with clients.

1) Believing fencing is needed for all water bodies deeper than 300mm

3) Building in pond equipment so it can’t be removed

6) Not considering the splash-factor when building any kind of water feature

Many landscapers we talk to believe ponds deeper than 300 mm need to be fenced. This isn’t true. The Victorian builders association website says, ‘barriers aren’t required for birdbaths, fountains, water storage supply tanks, fish ponds, dams… the list goes on’. The logic here is that if we had a fence around every single pond or dam, then it would get crazy. Where would you stop? So, legally you don’t have to put a fence around a pond or a dam. However, if the pond or dam has the purpose of swimming or looks appealing to swim in to a child, then definitely fence it. The same is true if there are children in the house or in the area; you should fence it.

Another common mistake landscapers make is to build in equipment or cabling so it cant be removed later. This becomes problematic to just about every client in this situation, it’s just a matter of when. Save your clients future headaches by designing your water feature filter and pump spaces to allow the equipment to be pulled out for maintenance or replacement with ease.

If you’re designing a waterfall, an ornamental fountain, falling water of any kind, remember to consider the splash-factor. On paper, a water feature looks great but if not well considered, the reality of a too-powerful water feature in too-cramped a space is that the client simply turns the water feature off. A general rule of thumb is you want to have at least twice the width to the height. So if the fountain is 1m high, you want to have at least 2m either side of it as a “wet” zone.

If your clients are interested in having a water feature, we recommend discussing pumps and filters with them right off the bat. If your client’s budget doesn’t permit adding a filter now, but they’re interested in adding one later, then have this conversation early and build this into your design. Design the water feature with a filter and pump location with the idea the clients will add the equipment later. This protects you from callbacks while allowing you to create beautiful water bodies.

5) Using concrete in ponds If you plan on using concrete as the base of your pond, beware that when waterproofing, bubbling is a common problem. These bubbles can arise at the surface and cause parts of the concrete to peel off. This often means leaking and further damage. A better option is to use fiberglass. These ponds simply last and last. If you’re committed to going concrete, at a minimum we highly recommend investing in a top-notch sealant, something from a professional waterproofing company. Better yet, get a sub-contractor to do the sealant job professionally for you. That way you can rest assured it’s done well.

7) Trying to DIY-build a pipe fountain If you’re considering running a pipe along the bottom of a large waterbody – to act as a water fountain in the middle – you may want to consider a Floating Fountain instead. Floating fountains are a better option as they rise and fall with the water and can be easily moved around. Our Matala Floating Fountains come with the choice of a 20m or 40m cable. Most fountains have cable runs of 10m or less. The fountain comes with an optional lighting kit. The kits are exceptionally easy to install. The fountain can be anchored to the dam floor or tied to an onshore star picket or pontoon. The equipment is also very easy to clean and maintain because you can simply pull it to you, rather than having to go to it, i.e. get into the water. The opinions and advice expressed in this article are those of the author. Readers should consult with the relevant authorities for specific advice on fencing related to their project.

Obviously not including a filter and pump with a water feature saves clients money upfront, but the risk is callbacks months or years later; clients complaining their waterbody is covered in algae or weeds, or emitting odour, or full of sludge.

If you’re tempted to use black builders liner as a quick, cheap solution to waterproofing underlay, please think again. The thin, flimsy material tears very easily and breaks down in the sun very quickly; we’re talking weeks in summer. In the end, it just ends up leaking like a sieve. Do things right the first time around by using a liner like a EPDM liner. EPDM is a synthetic rubber that looks great in the wild and lasts for decades, never losing its look or elasticity.

2) Not including a pump and filter in the water feature build. And constructing the water feature in such a way there’s no way of adding equipment later.

Her adept handling of the challenges posed by COVID and her ability to build strategic partnerships with government departments and affiliate associations shaped LVML's trajectory and enhanced its industry standing. On behalf of every member, I would like to acknowledge her exceptional contributions, expressing gratitude for her friendship, wisdom, and dedication which has been unwavering. Megan's last day as CEO was October 28th, marking the end of an era at LVML. - David Jarman, LVML President 2023

E S | S p r i n g / S u m m er 2023

Anyone who’s worked with Megan knows she cannot ignore a challenge! In my time as President, we went through many changes to the organisation, including repositioning as Master Landscapers, the beginnings of The Landscape Show and many other initiatives. By far the most important during that time was throughout the uncertain and difficult Covid period, where the industry and our members were under enormous strain and uncertainty. I think LVML really came into it’s own during that period as an unwavering support and advocate for our Members, and our industry - and Megan worked tirelessly to ensure the flow of information was as up to date as it could be, often in very challenging circumstances. Megan’s been an invaluable catalyst for change and growth throughout her 9 years with LVML - it’s going to be hard to move forward without her tenacity and wicked sense of humour - but I’m also excited to see what she does next. Thank you, Megan, for everything you’ve done. - Georgia Harper, LVML President 2018 - 2020

A Tribute to a Landscape Legend Celebrating Max Thomas' journey It was fitting that Max Thomas accepted a 45 years of membership certificate for Australian Native Landscapes from Landscaping Victoria Master Landscapers at Chadstone Shopping Centre, a landscape which Max was involved in developing over 35 years and a legacy he is incredibly proud of.

E S | S p r i n g / S u m m p er 2023 20 of 4 4

Having started ANL from the back of a ute in 1975, he held positions as Landscape Contractors Assocation of Victoria Vice President in 1983-84 then President from 1984-1988, while also having held the position of President of the National Landscaping body.

Max was integral in working with fellow Board members at the time to bring about change in the way landscaping was viewed within the construction sector – as a legitimate trade, with massive reform in training one of their legacies. He actively promoted landscaping professionalism to other states, encouraging the setup of interstate Associations based on the Victorian model and was subsequently invited to judge many State Award programs. ANL themselves won many awards over the years in the Victorian competition.

Max's legacy was recognised with his life membership in 2001. In reflecting on his retirement, Max expressed heartfelt gratitude towards his colleagues, friends, and the many hands that helped bring his visions to life, and the lasting friendships that he had made across different industries throughout the years. On behalf of all Members, LVML Board and Management wish Max an enjoyable and well-deserved retirement! Well done Max and thank you for your continued commitment to Landscaping across many decades. LIFE MEMBERSHIP

Awarded to

SALLY TULLOCH

Sally Tulloch was completely taken aback, but nonetheless delighted to have been presented with Life Membership at the 2023 Victorian Landscape Awards Night. Sally was a worthy recipient as she has gone above and beyond for the industry, and for the Association, for many years and is a caring and thoughtful person who helps and supports anyone in need. It is because of this attitude that her career in landscape design led her to teaching the craft she loves so much for 25 years at Holmesglen producing some of the best designers in the business. Sally is also a strategic thinker and worked on numerous Association committees to strengthen the relationship between the Association and educational providers before stepping up to serve on the Landscaping Victoria Board for 6 years.

E S | S p r i n g / S u m m er 2023 | 2 2

She judges the design category for the Awards every year, volunteers at MIFGS or other shows and has often been the first person to put her hand up to help on anything we do.

Although officially retired, Sally continues to contribute to the betterment of landscaping sector education programs through her work with the Landscape Design Course project currently underway. She has been an outstanding contributor to this large and complex body of work, despite the fact that only a few months into the final leg of the project last year she sustained physical injuries from an accident, including a broken pelvis and arm, but battled on through this with ferocity; never giving in, never giving up and never taking her eyes off the ultimate goal to support future generations of landscape designers who will ultimately benefit from this work. With everything she has done for our Members, for landscape education, and more broadly for this industry, her worthiness for recognition as a Life Member is unparalleled. Congratulations, and thank you Sally.

Thanks to the 2023 Judges There wouldn’t be an awards program without our judges, and we thank all who assisted this year, led by head judges, Anthony Scott and David Pierre-Humbert. The quality of work was outstanding this year, which made it that much harder for our panel of judges this year. We appreciate you all for your time and dedication.

The clever idea to have the paving slab engineered to avoid a caulking gap along the pool shell was a wonderful addition showing no signs of movement or cracking. The use of caulking joints, when required, displayed fantastic consistency in thickness, neatness and were well considered. The timber pool fence has been designed to regulate the 'sagging' often displayed with the movement of natural timber slats. Since joining the team at Nature’s Best , Simon has become known for his hardworking, yet easy going attitude. He has a true authentic passion for the landscape industry, which is evident when he invests his time to learn about the design side of the business. This keen interest has impressed his employer as has his high-quality workmanship, often only expected from those more senior. Simon continues to impress his teacher with his eagerness to improve and extend his landscaping skills by asking for theoretical workbooks to extend his knowledge. He demonstrates a clear ability to think independently and take charge of site setout processes and can work from a landscape plan and interpret engineering and architectural drawings. In yet another hotly contested year which saw the judges battle to separate the nine nominees, Simon was chosen as a true rising talent in this industry to take out the Apprentice of the Year in Construction.
