Keeping it cool.
Langara students teamed up with Vancouver’s CityStudio on a project to mitigate the urban ‘heat island’ effect in the Downtown Eastside (DE), a phenomenon where urban areas become considerably hotter than rural or natural areas due to paving, reflective surfaces, loss of green space, and climate change. With little access to proper shade or cooling, many DE residents find it nearly impossible to avoid the summer heat. The students offered solutions such as using 3D modelling software, laser cutters and printers, and metal fabrication equipment to create cooling canopies and modular seating.
A young and growing industry.
Langara College received $3.7 million in grants and industry partner contributions to help fund a five-year project studying cannabis varietals. The project will address questions such as: what is the genetic basis of cannabis varietal designation? What is the relationship between varietal and compound production? How can new varietals be developed in a targeted way? Our students have the opportunity to get hands-on, career-ready research experience while working closely with faculty and industry partners to build global competitiveness in this emerging field.
