Tulsa Guest Guide 3

FROM THE EDITOR Welcome to Tulsa! Whether this is your first visit or a frequent pilgrimage, we’re glad you’re here. Like other growing, vibrant cities across the country, Tulsa has a lot to celebrate: our entrepreneurial resources, our inclusive spirit and our commitment to charitable giving, for starters. We are especially proud of our creative class. T-town is filled with artists, musicians, dancers, dreamers and doers. Some of these fantastic individuals collaborated in recent years to redesign Tulsa’s flag as a symbol of our city’s past, present and future. The flag’s meaning describes several elements of what makes us uniquely Tulsa:

• The beige star at the center represents Tulsa’s bright future. A nod to Tulsa’s art deco architecture, it shows that we heal from past wounds and continue to flourish as an icon of a uniquely American city. • The beige field represents the warmth and community commonly found in Tulsa. Tulsa clearly has many facets, and we hope you experience the best of our city while you’re here. Just turn the pages of this book to see some of the wonderful attractions Tulsa has to offer, from performing arts and museums to festivals, restaurants and nightlife. Happy exploring!

• The blue field symbolizes the Arkansas River, which weaves through Tulsa, and the many resources it has provided throughout our history and today. • The horizontal line represents the 1901 discovery of oil, the “black gold” that brought substantial growth and commerce to this land. • The Native American shield represents the settlement of this area by Native American tribes and is a nod to the Oklahoma state flag. • Within the shield, the red circle represents the bloodshed and lives lost during the 1921 Tulsa Race Massacre that destroyed Black Wall Street, the most prosperous AfricanAmerican community in the country.

BUCK ATOM’S COSMIC CURIOS With his piercing blue eyes and rugged good looks, the 21-foot-tall space cowboy outside Buck Atom’s Cosmic Curios can’t be missed. Installed in May 2019, Buck is a “Muffler Man,” a large, fiberglass sculpture originally used as advertisement in the 1960s. His likeness now finds a home on souvenir items like T-shirts, magnets, coffee cups and stickers, which can all be purchased at the 350-square-foot gift shop along the Mother Road. Ninety percent of the shop’s stock comes from Oklahoma artists, makers and craftsmen, and all of it celebrates Tulsa, Oklahoma or Route 66. ARCHITECTURE HOT SPOTS Much of Tulsa’s downtown was built in the 1920s, when the city was dubbed the “Oil Capital of the World.” The era’s popular art deco style, with its sharp angles and complex details, lavishly celebrated the booming economy. Found in the Cathedral District, six of downtown’s earliest churches, including Boston Avenue United Methodist Church, have stunning art deco elements. The district is bordered by the southern end of the Inner Dispersal Loop, East Sixth Street, and West Denver and South Detroit avenues. These nonprofits offer walking tours to explore the city’s art deco architecture and downtown network of underground tunnels: • T ULSA FOUNDATION FOR ARCHITECTURE: Themed tours are on the second Saturday of each month at 10 a.m. Tours typically sell out. Visit tulsaarchitecture.com/tours. • TULSA HISTORICAL SOCIETY: Tours are on the last Friday of the month (except for November and December, when they are moved up a week to avoid holiday conflicts) and start at the southeast corner of East Fifth Street and South Boston Avenue at 10 a.m. Private group tours and self-guided tours also are available; visit tulsahistory.org.

Located inside a 1939 grocery building, Mother Road Market is Tulsa’s newest Route 66 attraction. The 27,000-square-foot food hall was completed in November 2018 and offers the food and wares of more than 20 merchants, all of them locally owned. The market is the brainchild of Tulsa’s own Lobeck Taylor Family Foundation, which has long invested in Tulsa entrepreneurs with a special interest in food start-ups. From craft cocktails, to street tacos, to gourmet pizza, to “midwesterranean” rotisserie platters, to a plethora of desserts, Mother Road Market has something for everyone. Indoor and patio play areas for children, including Route 66-themed mini golf, keep youngsters busy while their parents enjoy a fresh dinner or beverage from the full-service WEL Bar.

TULSA BOTANIC GARDEN The Tulsa Botanic Garden sits on 170 acres of prairie and woodlands, with the rolling Osage County hills offering panoramic views of sunrises, sunsets and skyscrapers. The Children’s Discovery Garden is a fantastical wonderland featuring a tree fort and a hidden grotto. Sixty acres of nature trails and impressive floral terraces display a diverse collection of ornamental and flowering plants. Learn about updates to the master plan at the visitor center; when the garden is complete, guests will be able to explore 60 acres, including a lotus pool and an all-seasons garden.

ONEOK FIELD

Home to the Tulsa Drillers — an AA affiliate of the Los Angeles Dodgers and the 2018 Texas League Champions — ONEOK Field is at the northern edge of downtown Tulsa in the midst of restaurants and trendy clubs. Tulsa’s professional soccer team, FC Tulsa, also plays at ONEOK Field. The club, which started as Tulsa Roughnecks FC in 2015, is part of the United Soccer League. The team plays home matches between March and October. A field “splashzone” keeps the kids cool on warm game days, and a playground — both located behind the centerfield fence — also can entertain antsy children.

EMBELLISHMENTS

Interior designer Hari Lu Ames loves to travel the U.S. and Europe, bringing back new, worldly pieces to Tulsa. She sells the items at her shop Embellishments, a perfect fit for Tulsa’s posh retail scene on the midtown strip of East 15th commonly called Cherry Street. Ames’ signature look contrasts the character of antique furniture with the clean lines of modern design — an aesthetic she calls “modern history.” “There are a lot of ways to make a pretty room,” Ames explains. “The space you live in should feel comfortable and reflect your personal taste.” 1602 E. 15TH ST., 918-585-8688, FACEBOOK.COM/EMBELLISHMENTSINTERIORS 24 Tulsa Guest Guide

Popular finds include midcentury modern furniture, but 1970s and ’80s decor also has been rising in popularity. “We aim for an East Coast/West Coast flea market feel, similar to Brooklyn Flea in New York and Melrose Trading Post in Los Angeles,” Hinrichs says. “Our vendors are very eclectic with a chic, bohemian vibe.” The market is open 9 a.m.-4 p.m. on the first Sunday of every month (check Facebook for exceptions). DUET JAZZ

Located in the basement of the historic Archer Building, Duet Jazz seats 140 with cabaret-style seating and a full-service bar. Upstairs is a modern American restaurant with eclectic dishes created by Executive Chef Nico Albert. “Duet Jazz is a unique state-of-the-art listening room that features local jazz, comedy and national touring jazz acts Wednesday through Saturday nights,” says Jeff Sloan, who

oversees programming at Duet. “We are now part of a missing link for touring acts between the East and West coasts.” Though jazz is king at Duet, the food is just as good. Albert’s menu features regional styles and international flavors. It’s divided into categories of soil, sea, and land and sky, resulting in a grounded, earthy vibe before the first delicious bite.

After its first life as a garage, the legendary Cain’s Ballroom became the home of Western swing, jitterbug and sock hop. It was just a good oldfashioned dance hall turned legend by Bob Wills and the Texas Playboys. Renovated in 2013 by the current owners, today Cain’s hosts top acts many nights of the week, and new shows are added all the time. Be sure to wear your walking shoes at this intimate venue with a reputation for rocking. Most Cain’s concerts are standing room only. “Hamilton”

A photo-realistic mural of Leon Russell by North Carolina artist JEKS at East Third Street and South Frankfort Avenue in Tulsa

WHAT IS THE TULSA SOUND? The evolution of a legendary musical style Besides the ever-present Cain’s Ballroom, Tulsa exploded with venues for live music in the ’50s and ’60s and brought a deluge of artists together, playing with and learning from one another. Since there were arcane liquor laws, these clubs were illegal to begin with, and their bands adopted the same outlaw attitude. They threw out the rules of conventional rock ‘n’ roll and borrowed from everyone and everything: country, blues, jazz, rockabilly, western swing and even gospel.

If you’re looking to catch an all-star orchestral performance, a production of the Tulsa Ballet or Tulsa Opera, or a touring Broadway show, the four-theater Tulsa Performing Arts Center is the venue for you. Opened in 1977, the Tulsa PAC replaced the Brady Theater as the City of Tulsa’s municipal auditorium with a premiere concert by Ella Fitzgerald. Celebrity Attractions, a Tulsa-based presenter and producer of national tours, presents its shows at the PAC and has one of the most successful Broadway seasons in the country, according to CEO Kristin Dotson. In 2019 the PAC hosted the blockbuster “Hamilton” for two-and-a-half weeks. In recent years, the PAC Trust has emphasized “the arts for all.” Its Orbit Initiative provides free, citywide classes for the community in disciplines like dance/movement, poetry and improvisation — all of which culminate in a large-scale PAC performance. 110 E. SECOND ST., TULSAPAC.COM 30 Tulsa Guest Guide

The dam first started leaking when Russell joined the Wrecking Crew. Russell made inroads with almost everyone: the Beach Boys, Eric Clapton, Bob Dylan, George Harrison, B. B. King, Jerry Lee Lewis, Willie Nelson and the Rolling Stones. Russell capitalized on his fame, talent and resources and brought Shelter Records to Tulsa. With Shelter Records also came a lot of attention to T-Town. The band Teegarden and Van Winkle, including Tulsa drummer David Teegarden, went to Detroit and started making music with Bob Seger. Radle and some other young musicians went to Florida to save a legend in Clapton. The Tulsa Sound was let loose upon the ears of an intrigued public. Artists named Elvin Bishop, Roger Tillison, Gene Crose, David Gates, Dwight Twilley, The Gap Band, Jim Byfield, Don White, Rocky Frisco and dozens of others achieved varying levels of recognition. More recognized names — the Allman Brothers, Dire Straits, Johnny Cash, Santana and The Band — took notice and started emulating and picking up tricks from the Tulsa Sound. The Tulsa Sound still plays on throughout alt-country (e.g., Old 97’s and Wilco) and red dirt music (Cross Canadian Ragweed and Red Dirt Rangers), but the most authentic Tulsa Sound can still be found all over Tulsa clubs.

HAMILTON: JOAN MARCUS; MURAL: TIM LANDES

TULSA PERFORMING ARTS CENTER

Those same musicians were not just born at the right time. They also practiced like madmen: Carl Radle, Leon Russell, Jimmy Karstein, Chuck Blackwell, J. J. Cale. A flood of skilled musicians was being dammed up in Tulsa’s illegal clubs.

FOOD AND DRINK

DOUBLESHOT COFFEE CO. His two-story coffee shop echoes that focus, along with another passion: sustainability. Finished in 2019, the new location — which replaced the original DoubleShot two blocks east that Franklin founded 15 years prior — was constructed with materials from at least four former structures, including an old Indiana barn he had disassembled, moved to Tulsa and reconstructed. 32 Tulsa Guest Guide

Solar panels keep the lights on and coffee grinders whirring, and there are plans for two Tesla chargers in the parking lot. In addition to no-frills coffee and serious espresso drinks (no blended frappes here) customers can expect breakfast burritos, pretzels, freshly baked goods and items inspired by food Franklin has eaten in his travels to coffee origins. “My goal has always been to push the coffee experience forward, and I’m not willing to compromise,” he says.

DINING DIRECTORY First-time visitors to Tulsa might be surprised at the variety of its culinary scene. From the city’s location in the heartland, one might expect Tulsa to do well at signature American cuisine such as steaks and burgers — and it does. However, local chefs are hitting it out of the park with establishments ranging from Asian fusion to pub fare to pizza and more. There’s no way to include everyone, but here’s just a taste of Tulsa’s dining all-stars. DENOTES ADVERTISERS.

LIVING ARTS OF TULSA

KENDALL WHITTIER DISTRICT

Tulsa is home to a plethora of arts events, and Living Arts of Tulsa is frequently behind them. Part venue, part facilitator of arts programming, Living Arts describes itself as “a platform for evolving ideas and aesthetics, interdisciplinarity and community empowerment through exhibitions, workshops, performances, films, lectures and education.”

Kendall Whittier, the area around East Admiral Boulevard and North Lewis Avenue, is one of Tulsa’s oldest shopping districts. Today it is a rapidly expanding artist’s community.

VALERIE WEI-HAAS

The New Genre Arts Festival, one Living Arts’ biggest and most well-known, features some of the most stimulating and thoughtprovoking visual and performing arts in the nation, according to festival organizers. Living Arts also presents the annual Dia de los Muertos (Day of the Dead) Arts Festival each Nov. 1. The popularity of this festival is due in large part to Tulsa’s active and considerable Hispanic and Latino communities. Expect to find traditional and contemporary Latino dancers and mariachi and salsa bands. The Skeleton Parade is an emotional and engrossing journey through the many altars erected by artists and groups to honor their loved ones. 307 E. RECONCILIATION WAY, 918-585-1234, LIVINGARTS.ORG

A key piece to the Kendall Whittier revival was the rehabilitation of the iconic Circle Cinema, 10 S. Lewis Ave., opened in 1928. With $3 million in renovations, Tulsans Clark Wiens and George Kravis — with help from the City of Tulsa — saved Tulsa’s oldest theater left over from the oil boom days. “The Circle was in pretty disgusting shape,” Wiens says, “but we had a dream that we believed in. I felt if we stayed the course, then other people would join us eventually.” Now the nonprofit theater screens independent and art films on an ongoing basis, and hosts film festivals and other events. Home to a vibrant Hispanic enclave, Kendall Whittier also hosts a multicultural open-air market. Find colorful clothing, accessories and art at the Kendall Whittier Mercado, which meets May through October from 10 a.m.-2 p.m., on the first and third Saturdays. It has two creative studios and labs where guests can learn metalworking, printmaking and photography. THE STUDIO invites ahha visitors to think like artists through openended creative exploration and discovery. Visitors select their own materials from a wide array of possibilities, generate their own ideas and execute their own unique creative products. Now in its 13th year, First Friday brings more than 3,000 Tulsans and visitors to galleries, studios and museums. Guests can get an inside look at the artist’s process through the Refinery, 109 N. M.L.K. Jr. Blvd. The building houses the studios of the Tulsa Artist Fellowship, a program designed to recruit and retain artists. “The guest may see a work-in-progress in the studio one month, then see its final form displayed in a gallery the next month,” says Abby Mashunkashey, director of communications for TAF. “This allows for a multi-layered conversation to take place — both with the artists and with oneself.” Most Tulsa Arts District galleries and museums offer free First Friday admission. GILCREASE MUSEUM

GILCREASE: VALERIE WEI-HAAS; PHILBROOK: MORGAN WELCH

Gilcrease Museum is one of the country’s best facilities for the preservation and study of American art and history. The museum draws thousands of visitors from around the world to the hills just northwest of downtown Tulsa to view the world’s largest, most comprehensive collection of artifacts of the American West. The museum also offers an unparalleled collection of Native American art and artifacts, as well as historical manuscripts, documents and maps. Its Kravis Discovery Center uses an interactive discovery trail to create an immersive educational experience. Beyond the museum, themed gardens have been developed on 23 of the museum’s 460 acres. Gilcrease also offers tours, workshops, musical events, lectures and a restaurant. 1400 N. GILCREASE MUSEUM ROAD, 918-596-2700, GILCREASE.ORG

PHILBROOK MUSEUM OF ART One of Tulsa’s most beautiful neighborhoods is the setting for Philbrook Museum of Art, an Italianate villa built on 23 lush acres by oilman Waite Phillips and his wife, Genevieve. Philbrook, listed on the National Register of Historic Places, has evolved from a grand family estate to one of America’s finest art museums, showcasing collections from around the world. Numerous educational programs for all ages, a diverse permanent collection, traveling exhibits, Kitchen 27 and lush gardens draw more than 150,000 visitors per year. On the second Saturday of each month, Philbrook waives its admission charge for all guests and offers free art supplies and activities to children and families. The grounds also feature an edible garden and a permanent installation of a full-scale log cabin. Special Philbrook events range from the Internet Cat Video Festival to the MIX cocktail battle to Films on the Lawn. A master plan to re-envision the historic building and grounds will be unveiled in summer 2020. 2727 S. ROCKFORD ROAD, 918-749-7941, PHILBROOK.ORG Tulsa Guest Guide 45

TULSA GLASSBLOWING SCHOOL

Kenneth Gonzales, Tulsa Glassblowing School project director

Whether you’re a novice or a skilled glass artist, the nonprofit Tulsa Glassblowing School provides an outlet for creativity, teamwork and self-expression. In October 2019 the school moved from the Tulsa Arts District to an empty recreation center in McClure Park. There, TGS operates an open-access hotshop and kiln studio, where it leads guests in onetime hotglass experiences, multi-week classes and private lessons. “It’s a unique experience for anyone interested in the beauty of glass art,” says TGS Executive Director Janet Duvall. The school, which partners with local schools and youth programs, also offers VETri, a therapeutic glassblowing program for military veterans, offered at no cost to them. It is one of only two such programs in the U.S. 7440 E. SEVENTH STREET, 918-582-4527, TULSAGLASSBLOWING.ORG

SPORTS AND OUTDOORS CLIMB TULSA Located just off the Broken Arrow Expressway at South Yale Avenue, the hard-to-miss Climb Tulsa facility is among the largest climbing gyms in the nation. It offers 17,000 square feet in which to train or climb for fun and is accommodating to all ages, says founder Jason Burks. For younger climbers, the gym has a separate, less difficult climbing area and hosts various kids’ camps that teach climbing skills.

An avid climber himself, Burks had seen massive climbing gyms in various cities across the country. He decided Tulsa needed something similar. “You’re not going to find a city the size of Tulsa with a gym this cool,” he says.
