FROM THE EDITOR Welcome to Tulsa, a city known for its inclusive spirit, generosity and innovation. The recent pandemic has tested us all, but Tulsa businesses have gone above and beyond to be resourceful, courageous and compassionate. We encourage you to support as many as possible while you’re in town — you won’t be disappointed. From its origins as a Muscogee meeting place and boomtown to a progressive community and entrepreneurial hub, Tulsa is nothing if not resilient. The city’s flag describes several elements of what makes us uniquely Tulsa and provides a peek into our past, present and future:

• The beige star at the center represents Tulsa’s bright future. A nod to Tulsa’s art deco architecture, it shows that we heal from past wounds and continue to flourish as a uniquely American city. • The beige field represents the warmth and community commonly found in Tulsa. Tulsa clearly has many facets, so get out and about to enjoy the best of our city. Just turn the pages of this book to see some of the wonderful attractions Tulsa has to offer, from performing arts and museums to festivals, restaurants and nightlife. Happy exploring!

• The blue field symbolizes the Arkansas River, which weaves through Tulsa, and the many resources it has provided throughout our history and today. • The horizontal line represents the 1901 discovery of oil, the “black gold” that brought substantial growth and commerce to this land. • The shield represents the settlement of this area by Native American tribes and is a nod to the Oklahoma state flag. • Within the shield, the red circle represents the bloodshed and lives lost during the 1921 Tulsa Race Massacre that destroyed Black Wall Street, the most prosperous African American community in the country.

The birthplace of Tulsa, this tree is where the Lochapoka Creek Indians kindled a ceremonial fire in 1836, using live coals they carried from their Alabama homeland over the Trail of Tears. BUCK ATOM’S COSMIC CURIOS With his piercing blue eyes and rugged good looks, the 21-foot-tall space cowboy outside Buck Atom’s Cosmic Curios can’t be missed. Buck is a “Muffler Man,” a large, fiberglass sculpture originally used as advertisement in the 1960s. His likeness now finds a home on souvenir items like T-shirts, magnets, coffee cups and stickers, which can all be purchased at the 350-square-foot gift shop along the Mother Road. Ninety percent of the shop’s stock comes from Oklahoma artists, makers and craftsmen, and all of it celebrates Tulsa, Oklahoma or Route 66. There’s also a unique selection of vintage tchotchkes and knickknacks — an ode to the “curio” part of the business. 1347 E. 11TH ST., BUCKATOMSON66.COM

ARCHITECTURE HOT SPOTS Much of Tulsa’s downtown was built in the 1920s, when the city was dubbed the “Oil Capital of the World.” The era’s popular art deco style, with its sharp angles and complex details, lavishly celebrated the booming economy. Found in the Cathedral District, six of downtown’s earliest churches, including Boston Avenue United Methodist Church, have stunning art deco elements. The district is bordered by the southern end of the Inner Dispersal Loop, East Sixth Street, and West Denver and South Detroit avenues. These nonprofits offer walking tours to explore the city’s art deco architecture and downtown network of underground tunnels: • TULSA FOUNDATION FOR ARCHITECTURE: Themed tours are on the second Saturday of each month at 10 a.m. Tours typically sell out. Visit tulsaarchitecture.com/tours. • TULSA HISTORICAL SOCIETY: Tours are on the last Friday of the month (except for November and December, when they are moved up a week to avoid holiday conflicts) and start at the southeast corner of East Fifth Street and South Boston Avenue at 10 a.m. Private group tours and self-guided tours also are available; visit tulsahistory.org.

Located inside a 1939 grocery building, Mother Road Market is a 27,000-square-foot food hall. Diners can shop the food and wares of more than 20 merchants, all of them locally owned. From craft cocktails, to street tacos, to gourmet pizza, to a plethora of desserts, MRM has something for everyone. A large patio play area with Route 66-themed mini golf keeps youngsters busy while their parents enjoy a fresh dinner or beverage from the full-service WEL Bar. Just north of MRM, don’t miss the Shops at Mother Road Market, an eclectic mix of local concepts selling clothing, gifts, books and more. 1124 S. LEWIS AVE., 918-984-9001, MOTHERROADMARKET.COM

She sells the items at her shop Embellishments, a perfect fit for Tulsa’s posh retail scene on the midtown strip of East 15th commonly called Cherry Street. THE COLONY With shows going back to its opening in 1958, at first glance the Colony seems an unlikely spot to find national and international talent. Don’t let appearances fool you. Any night of the week, you’re likely to find outstanding local talent jamming with an arena headliner who “happened to be passing through.” Magic happens here. “The venue is known for helping to cultivate the Tulsa Sound, both old and new,” says HEIDI TINDLE, the venue’s owner since 2017. “A lot of people know us for red dirt music, but we strive to bring diversity to our bookings, from red dirt to hip-hop and everything in between.” “What makes the Colony special is the community of artists who make us their home away from home,” Tindle says. “It’s incredible to see a musician walk into the venue and get called up on stage. All of these guys are capable of playing with each other at a moment’s notice and that community coming together regularly is what truly makes the Colony special.” Local musicians frequent this dive bar once owned by the legendary LEON RUSSELL.

In 2019 the Tulsa Perfoming Arts Center hosted the blockbuster “Hamilton” for more than two weeks.

THE CHURCH STUDIO

If you’re looking to catch an all-star orchestral performance, a production of the Tulsa Ballet or Tulsa Opera, or a touring Broadway show, the four-theater Tulsa Performing Arts Center is the venue for you. Opened in 1977, the Tulsa PAC replaced the thenBrady Theater (now called Tulsa Theater) as the City of Tulsa’s municipal auditorium with a premiere concert by Ella Fitzgerald.

The Church became a creative space for songwriters, musicians, engineers and singers. Major industry talent such as Tom Petty, Phoebe Snow and Peter Tosh recorded at the Church Studio, along with nationally acclaimed Tulsa-based acts like The GAP Band, JJ Cale and Russell himself. The Church Studio also was the home base for Shelter Records, a record label started by Russell and British producer Denny Cordell. Many point to Church Studio as the epicenter of what later came to be known as the Tulsa Sound: that hard-to-define, potent, shuffling stew of rockabilly, country, rock and roll, and blues associated with Russell, Cale and Eric Clapton.

Celebrity Attractions, a Tulsa-based presenter and producer of national tours, presents its shows at the PAC and has one of the most successful Broadway seasons in the country, according to CEO Kristin Dotson.

In 2016 entrepreneur Teresa Knox purchased the Church Studio. Today it is a recording studio, exhibit space, event center, audio engineering school, an archive for the Leon Russell and Tulsa Sound collections, and a shop for Church merch.

In recent years, the PAC Trust has emphasized “the arts for all.” Its Orbit Initiative provides free, citywide classes for the community in disciplines like dance/movement, poetry and improvisation — all of which culminate in a large-scale PAC performance.

“It’s so magical what happened here,” Knox says. “It’s just a very magical, incredible time in our city’s history.”

HAMILTON: JOAN MARCUS; RUSSELL: COURTESY

TULSA PERFORMING ARTS CENTER

Legendary musician and songwriter Leon Russell purchased a Tulsa church in 1972 and renovated it. The building began life in 1915 as Grace Methodist Episcopal Church, one of the city’s earliest churches, but for a brief time it became the epicenter of a music scene that resonated well beyond the city limits to the greater world of rock and roll.

FOOD AND DRINK

DOUBLESHOT COFFEE CO. His two-story coffee shop echoes that focus, along with another passion: sustainability. Finished in 2019, the new location — which replaced the original DoubleShot two blocks east that Franklin founded 15 years prior — was constructed with materials from at least four former structures, including an old Indiana barn he had disassembled, moved to Tulsa and reconstructed. 32 Tulsa Guest Guide

Solar panels keep the lights on and coffee grinders whirring, and the shop has two Tesla chargers in the parking lot. In addition to no-frills coffee and serious espresso drinks (no blended frappes here) customers can expect breakfast burritos, doughnuts, freshly baked goods and items inspired by food Franklin has eaten in his travels to coffee origins. “My goal has always been to push the coffee experience forward, and I’m not willing to compromise,” he says.

First-time visitors to Tulsa might be surprised at the variety of its culinary scene. From the city’s location in the heartland, one might expect Tulsa to do well at signature American cuisine such as steaks and burgers — and it does. However, local chefs are hitting it out of the park with establishments ranging from Asian fusion to pub fare to pizza and more. There’s no way to include everyone, but here’s just a taste of Tulsa’s dining all-stars.

LIVING ARTS OF TULSA

GREENWOOD RISING

Tulsa is home to a plethora of arts events, and Living Arts of Tulsa is frequently behind them. Part venue, part facilitator of arts programming, Living Arts describes itself as “a platform for evolving ideas and aesthetics, interdisciplinarity and community empowerment through exhibitions, workshops, performances, films, lectures and education.”

Greenwood Rising is a history center sharing the story of Black Wall Street before, during and after the 1921 Tulsa Race Massacre. From May 31-June 1, 1921, white mobs destroyed 35 blocks of the city’s prominent Black community of Greenwood.

TIM LANDES

The New Genre Arts Festival, one Living Arts’ biggest and most well-known, features some of the most stimulating and thoughtprovoking visual and performing arts in the nation, according to festival organizers. Living Arts also presents the annual Dia de los Muertos (Day of the Dead) Arts Festival each November. The popularity of this festival is due in large part to Tulsa’s active and considerable Hispanic and Latino communities. Expect to find traditional and contemporary Latinx dancers and mariachi and salsa bands. The Skeleton Parade is an emotional and engrossing journey through the many altars erected by artists and groups to honor their loved ones.

Designed by Local Projects, known for its work at the National September 11 Memorial and Museum, the immersive Greenwood Rising experience begins with a video introduction. Then, visitors “cross the tracks” to learn about the history of the district. In one section, visitors take a seat in a “virtual barber’s shop” to better understand racist sentiments of the day. They also have the opportunity to make a personal commitment toward racial reconciliation that is added to a wall of positive messages. The $18.2 million Greenwood Rising center was funded with local and state dollars and private donations. Advance tickets are required. 23 N. GREENWOOD AVE., GREENWOODRISING.ORG

FIRST FRIDAY ARTS CRAWL The immersive art installations and hands-on workshops of ahha Tulsa fill its guests with childlike wonder. The Arts and Humanities Council of Tulsa’s contemporary art gallery and multipurpose space features pieces by local and regional artists. It has two creative studios and labs where guests can learn metalworking, printmaking and photography. THE STUDIO invites ahha visitors to think like artists through openended creative exploration and discovery. Visitors select their own materials from a wide array of possibilities, generate their own ideas and execute their own unique creative products. STUDIO Ambassadors act as guides for technical support, and creative challenges are available for visitors who need help getting started. 101 E. ARCHER ST., 918-584-3333, AHHATULSA.ORG 44 Tulsa Guest Guide

Now in its 13th year, First Friday brings more than 3,000 Tulsans and visitors to galleries, studios and museums. Guests can get an inside look at the artist’s process through the Refinery, 109 N. M.L.K. Jr. Blvd. The building houses the studios of the Tulsa Artist Fellowship, a program designed to recruit and retain artists. Guests might see a work-in-progress in the studio one month, then see its final form displayed in a gallery the next month. This allows for a multi-layered conversation to take place — both with the artists and with oneself. Most Tulsa Arts District galleries and museums offer free First Friday admission. PHILBROOK MUSEUM OF ART DISCOVERY LAB

DISCOVERY LAB: COURTESY; PHILBROOK: MORGAN WELCH

Tulsa’s latest addition to the Gathering Place park is the new Discovery Lab, a 50,000-square-foot children’s museum with interactive exhibits and programming space. Kids will love the hands-on activities in the museum’s state-ofthe-art WorkShop, Science Lab and Little Lab. The new Education Center within the museum has five classrooms and serves as the STEM Center for Tulsa Public Schools’ pre-K through sixth grades. Don’t miss the merchandise shop and cafe. Previously located at Tulsa’s Owen Park just north of downtown, the newly opened Discovery Lab has been under construction since spring 2020. Check its website for ticket and/or reservation protocols. EAST 31ST STREET AND SOUTH RIVERSIDE DRIVE, DISCOVERYLAB.ORG

One of Tulsa’s most beautiful neighborhoods is the setting for Philbrook Museum of Art, an Italianate villa built on 23 lush acres by oilman Waite Phillips and his wife, Genevieve. Philbrook, listed on the National Register of Historic Places, has evolved from a grand family estate to one of America’s finest art museums, showcasing collections from around the world. Numerous educational programs for all ages, a diverse permanent collection, traveling exhibits, Kitchen 27 and lush gardens draw more than 150,000 visitors per year. On the second Saturday of each month, Philbrook waives its admission charge for all guests and offers free art supplies and activities to children and families. The grounds also feature an edible garden and a permanent installation of a full-scale log cabin. Special Philbrook events range from the Internet Cat Video Festival to the MIX cocktail battle to Films on the Lawn. 2727 S. ROCKFORD ROAD, 918-749-7941, PHILBROOK.ORG Tulsa Guest Guide 45

TULSA GLASSBLOWING SCHOOL Whether you’re a novice or a skilled glass artist, the nonprofit Tulsa Glassblowing School provides an outlet for creativity, teamwork and self-expression. In recent years the school moved from the Tulsa Arts District to an empty recreation center in McClure Park. There, TGS operates an open-access hotshop and kiln studio, where it leads guests in onetime hotglass experiences, multi-week classes and private lessons. “It’s a unique experience for anyone interested in the beauty of glass art,” says TGS Executive Director Janet Duvall. The school, which partners with local schools and youth programs, also offers VETri, a therapeutic glassblowing program for military veterans, offered at no cost to them. It is one of only two such programs in the U.S. 7440 E. SEVENTH STREET, 918-582-4527, TULSAGLASSBLOWING.ORG

SPORTS AND OUTDOORS CLIMB TULSA Located just off the Broken Arrow Expressway at South Yale Avenue, the hard-to-miss Climb Tulsa facility is among the largest climbing gyms in the nation. It offers 17,000 square feet in which to train or climb for fun and is accommodating to all ages, says founder Jason Burks. For younger climbers, the gym has a separate, less difficult climbing area and hosts various kids’ camps that teach climbing skills.

TULSA RUMBLERS Founded in late 2018 by a few dads looking to play more baseball, the Rumblers are part of the Sandlot Revolution, a grassroots movement that started in Austin, Texas, about a decade ago. Now the Rumblers are one of at least four sandlot teams in Tulsa. The Rumblers play 10-12 games per season, which lasts from early March to early November. In June the Rumblers traveled to Dyersville, Iowa, for the first sandlot game at the iconic Field of Dreams, where the classic movie of the same name was filmed. The 16-man team welcomes anyone and everyone to Sandlot Sundays at Lacy Park: a chance to play hardball and make some new friends in the process. LACY PARK, 2134 N. MADISON PLACE TULSARUMBLERS.COM
