A 64-year-old woman died at the scene of a fire in Langley City Sunday night. The fire in the 20300 block of Grade Crescent, next to H.D. Stafford Middle School, was discovered at about 9:05 p.m. When crews arrived on scene, they found a large amount of smoke and a significant fire was already raging in the house, said deputy City fire chief Bob Scott. “We had to operate in a defensive mode,” Scott said. “The building wasn’t safe for us to get into at all.” More than 20 firefighters battled the blaze for three hours before it was brought under control. It was during a search of the building that the victim’s body was discovered. Scott said both she and her husband lived there, but the husband was not home at the time of the fire. The Langley RCMP is now working with City fire investigators to determine the exact cause of the blaze. Although there is no overt sign that the fire was caused by arson, police and fire crews are being very thorough.

A 64-year-old woman was found dead after the fire at this home in the 20300 block of Grade Crescent. “We’re treating it as suspicious, to err on the side of caution,” Scott said. That means the fire will be investigated very thoroughly, with all possible resources brought in. The investigation was going on for much of the day on Monday. The fire also claimed the lives

A crash that sent five people to hospital, including a man in critical condition and a toddler, is under investigation by Langley RCMP. The crash took place in the 26700 block of 16th Avenue just after noon. A Camaro was heading east on 16th, apparently at the speed limit. A westbound pickup spun sideways and into the eastbound lane, said Cpl. Holly Marks, spokesperson for the Langley RCMP. The Camaro tried to stop, but T-boned the pickup truck. The man, woman, and toddler in the Camaro managed to climb out on their own as their car caught on fire, Marks said. All three were taken to hospital by ground ambulance for treatment of non-life threatening injuries. There were three men in the pickup,
one of whom was taken to hospital by Air Ambulance with life-threatening injuries. Another man was taken to hospital by ground ambulance, and the third was unhurt. Marks said police have not yet determined what caused the pickup to swerve, and don’t even know yet if speed was a factor. Police are still looking into whether the snowy
weather may have contributed. The Integrated Collision Analyst and Reconstruction Service was working on the scene Monday afternoon, after police temporarily closed 16th Avenue east of 264th. Anyone who saw the crash or has information that could help police understand what happened should call the Langley RCMP at 604-532-3200.
