Needles are at the ready A bundle of brightly coloured sweaters will be sent to babies abroad. Residents of Harrison Pointe seniors complex are making life cozier for babies around the world. They’ve been knitting baby items that will be shipped to communities in need, delivering 50 sweaters recently and pledging more. Sylvia Enga, of the Anglican Church Women for the Diocese of New Westminster, explained that the items are destined for various places. “The baby layettes and blankets that are being so beautifully knitted are going several times a year in ‘bales’ up to the Yukon,” she said. The Fish and Chip baby sweaters and toques are going to the Embrace Rwanda project. The term Fish and Chip baby refers to little ones born in Africa who have to be wrapped in newspaper because of a lack of supplies. There’s even a special pattern knitters use to create sweaters that the child can wear as he or she grows. “I know that a Dorothy Kirkwood, from a small town in Scotland is responsible for the original pattern which has not altered in the five years,” Enga said. “She saw the babes being wrapped in newspaper for warmth. When I Googled the pattern it seems like groups all over the world are busy knitting.” Embrace Rwanda is a Vancouver-based charity that has been working in the country since 2008.

Ramona Wildeman/Langley Advance

The residents of Harrison Pointe have been knitting items for babies that will be shipped to various places around the world.

It started with a focus on maternal and child health, and has since expanded to include related topics such as early childhood education, vocational training, and credit and loan programs to foster small business. Other sweaters from Harrison Pointe knitters will go to Africa, via Victoria where they are packed into 40-foot shipping containers by the group Canada Comforts Society. In addition to sweaters there will be medical equipment, school supplies and more. The local knitters will be keeping their needles at the ready. Another batch is expected to go to Chad through Canada Comforts,

a group that is entirely volunteer run. It only sends items that have been requested and most of the items go to orphanages and hospital. The group members knit teddy bears, toques, sweaters, washcloths and afghans, and sew bags for the teddies, dresses, shorts, skirts, Tshirts, diapers and receiving blankets. The group also winds bandages from strips of old sheets. Last year the charity sent 20 containers abroad, and this year has so far sent supplies to Guatemala, Honduras, Liberia and El Salvador. continuned on page 4 Resources for Langley Seniors •

Knit-Wits The Knit-wits meet Fridays, at the Langley Seniors Resource Centre with head Knit-Wit, Trish. Do you want to knit with a group of friendly people? Everyone is welcome. The group has some donated yarn, needles and patterns for you to use. Trish is able and willing to help you with your project. Or, if need be, she can help you get started by showing you the basics. Many in the group knit for their favourite charities – Variety Club and Children’s Hospital are two of these. The group seets Fridays 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Recently members answered the call to knit preemie hats and hats for newborns when these were desperately needed. There is also a need for hats and mittens for children and adults. If you would like to help by knitting hats and mittens, or if you’d like more information, call the centre at 604-530-3020. Helping kids If you like to knit touques, mittens and slippers for children aged infant to 12 years of age, please contact the number below. These items will then be given to children from Douglas Park Community School. Ccall Carol Donovan at 604-534-9264 to find out more.
