WEEK 9 READING: TITLE OF READING

Question 1: What are Durer’s rules for perspectival projection? (Maximum 100 words) The perspectival projection refers to look out through windows. By that I mean, there is a so-called visual pyramid. The eye is the apex of theis pyramid and the object is connected by the space created. The first rule of Durer is about vanishing point, which is created by a perpendicular line with the eye and picture plane. The second is that regardless of the direction, they call have the common vanishing point if they are parallels. Finally, any portion of the picture is caculable from the preceding as equal dimensions diminish as receding in space.

Question 2: Describe homogenous space? (Maximum 100 words) Homogenous space is the space produced by construction. That is to say they are constructed by ourself according to the given space. The homogenous space also has points joined in it, so they are not independent content.

OLD QUAD ISOMETRIC

The isometric without notation, which can give us a clear idea of the space that we can create our world in. As is shown, it is a double-story 3*3 square with nine vaults on it.

CITIES & THE SKY 3: THEKLA OLD QUAD ISOMETRIC WITH NOTATIONS This is the isometric view with symbols to illustrate how my story happens with all the characters. This symbols represents the words in the contents which are more understandable.

QUAD PERSPECTIVE 1 + 2 This is the first view the visitor will see after reaching the city. I chose the elements like “food stalls” “golden cock”, which reminds me of a crowded market, so I use GPO in Melbourne as a reference. This perspective can easily create the feeling of depth which show the prosperity of this city

The second perspective is on a balcony, where most of elements in I created can be seen from here. Because of the higher altitude, the visitor can see different views both interior and exterior. In addition, since this is the part that is hidden from what the visitor can see in the first perspective, so it is a good supplement to understand the whole space.

PERSPECTIVE SCENE 1 + 2

In order to create the noisy market, I added a few food stalls and people around them, which is also the element related to my story. I carefully use background pictures to create the view outside so that the visitor is not limited in this specific space. Those people upstairs make the whole market more active and alive, which makes the visitor have the intention to hang around and walk upstairs and it naturally connects with my second perspective.

The visitor finally reaches the second floor when it is already evening. The outside view of upper floor is different from the ground floor so I can add the scenery of silver domes and city landscape in the background here. I used different lights to show the multicolored lamps and use this crystal lamp in the middle to create the luxury atmosphere where a ball was holding. Everyone is from the higher hierarchy expect for the lady crying on stairs. This makes the changing of this visitor’s mood more reasonable.

Question 1: IWhat is the difference between autographic and allographic practice? (Maximum 100 words) Autographic practice is something directly related to the author, and the result has been fully presented to the audience. However, the allographic practice is more subjective. Instead of direct interaction with the audience, notation works as important media in allographic practice. Based on notations, they produce new realities, rather than existing and tangible things.

Question 2: Why do architects need new representational techniques? (Maximum 100 words) The first reason is the substitution of the intangible for the tangible to make the inadequacy of the image as a descriptive mechanism. Since modern city has already lost the signifying potencies and structural coherences we need to create new representational techniques to suit the changing. Secondly, the technological and social changes reflect on symbolic form. Therefore, the representation should change to map the unmappable territory. Finally, the contemporary city is not reducible to an artifact. In order to represent the time and change, shifting scales, mobile points of view and multiple programs, techniques are needed to be rethought because traditional ones only presume stable objects and fixed subjects.

The story I try to convey in through these symbols and two perspectives is adapted from chapter 1. After proceeding towards east for three days, the visitor finally reached the city. Besides the beautiful scenery, he was also so attracted by the busy and crowded market that he can’t help hanging around. We can see from the first perspective that there are some food stalls and people around them. I used people on the balcony and noise in the market to show that people live and work in peace and contentment here.

It is getting darker while he was shopping so it the timeline flows with the movement. In the evening, the visitor finally reached the second floor, where a ball was holding. You can see the music and crowds there. Everything was so luxury. There were bronze statues of all the gods on the columns, crystal lamps and multicolored lights. He was almost influenced by the happiness of those people dancing in the middle until he heard a woman’s voice cries “ooh”. Then the visitor found a lady crying besides the entrance of the ball for can’t join the party of higher hierarchy. We can see in the second perspective that there is a staring symbol there and the mood changes from light to heavy on the terrace. The city view outside reminds him of the scenery he saw in the morning, and the city that he had been to where all are born equal. He felt jealous of those common people because he realized that the happiness in real life is more valuable and unforgettable.
