Great Strides benefit walk set for June 5 Event to benefit Cystic Fibrosis Foundation Ken Palmer tthelen@lsj.com
DeWITT — When Valerie Leonard was born with cystic fibrosis nearly 30 years ago, her parents had little reason to expect she would live into her teens. “When they were born, we were told the average age was 11,” said her mother, Laura Masterson, who also has a son with CF. Since then, prospects have improved greatly for those with the progressive genetic disorder. On average, sufferers now live to age 35, and promising new treatments are in the works. Valerie, now 28, underwent a double lung transplant in November and no longer has to endure six or seven hours of breath-

ing treatments a day, Masterson said. But her medical treatment won’t end any time soon. “There’s a whole medical regimen that has to be followed,” Masterson said. “Her new lungs will never have cystic fibrosis. (But) rejection is always a possibility.” Researchers have made remarkable progress, but the work takes money, said Masterson, who works at the MSU Cystic Fibrosis Center. To that end, the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation will sponsor Great Strides – a 5k walk to raise money for CF research – on June 5 at Riverside Park in DeWitt. Registration begins at 12:30 p.m. “Anything we need is funded by the foundation,” said Carla Alverson, a nurse who works at the MSU clinic. “Without that money, we may not be open.” Typically, about 75 to 100 people take part in the Lansing-DeWitt event, one of

The disease causes life-threatening lung infections and serious digestion problems. It also affects growth rates. About one out of every 31 Americans carries the mutated gene that causes the disease. Her daughter was on the transplant list for 11 months, she said. “Your level on the list goes up and down based upon how well you are doing,” Masterson said. “Then you have to find a match. Then you have to be healthy enough at the time a match is found to have the surgery.” Some patients can live for 15 to 20 years on a lung transplant, she said. Masterson’s son, Daniel, 25, a mechanical engineer, now receives daily breathing treatments. Masterson was strained as an industrial engineer but couldn’t work full time because her children needed extra care. She started volunteering at the MSU CF center nearly a decade ago and how works there full time.

A neighbor called police to report hearing a female screaming for help in the parking lot about 5:45 a.m., police reports said. The man said the female came home intoxicated, “beat the hell” out of him and then ran up and down the road screaming before he could calm her down. She later pushed a lit cigarette into his forearm, struck him several times and bit his thumb, the man claimed. The girl said she burned the man and bit his thumb because he wouldn’t “leave me alone,” the reports said. The girl was turned over to her father, and prosecutors were reviewing the incident.

LANSING — Four girls from DeWitt received the Girl Scout Gold Award at a ceremony held May 12 at Holt High School. The girls were honored by Girl Scouts Heart of Michigan for their leadership and dedication to community service. They are Brianne June, of Troop 30738 and Kily Buta, Megan Frayer and Alicia Kitson, all of Troop 30036. The Girl Scout Gold Award, awarded by Girl Scouts of the USA, is earned by only 3 percent of Girl Scouts, ages 14 through 18, across the country. The highest achievement in Girl Scouting, it calls upon each girl to develop a service learning project, putting her leadership skills into action by creating sustainable change in her community. The Girl Scout Gold Award is the equivalent of the Eagle Scout Award in Boy Scouting. Kily Buta organized a festival, an art exhibit, and a multi-grade presentation and established a Japanese Club at DeWitt High School as part of her “Multi-Cultural Bridging” project. The festival showcased Japanese food, clothing, activities and language. She also obtained donated children’s artwork for the exhibit with assistance from Michigan’s Japanese Sister-State Shiga. Through her project she involved communities in the Greater Lansing area along with Michigan State University’s Michigan-Shiga Japanese Exchange Program. Her parents are Kim Buta-Blair and Bruce Boulee. She is the stepdaughter of James Blair. Megan Frayer, through her “Sharing the Rosary” project, worked with the Lansing Diocese Scouting Committee to develop a Rosary-focused patch program. She offered a workshop to Girl Scouts in the DeWitt area.
In addition, she assembled 50 curriculum packets for an orphanage in Mexico, which included rosaries made during the Girl Scout workshop. Megan taught the program to seventh and eighth grade mentor groups at her church so they could share it with others. She is the daughter of Beth and David Frayer. Working with her Girl Scout troop, Brianne June cleaned the headstones at Alward Lake and Merrihew Cemeteries in Olive Twp. As part of her project, “Alward Lake and Merrihew Cemetery Restoration,” she also created a database that documented the names, dates and locations of each headstone and burial site, to be used by families to locate their loved ones’ remains. The database will be shared with the local historical society and posted on their website for easy access. Brianne is the
daughter of Sandra and Scott June. Alicia Kitson created a “DeWitt Michigan Historical Video” for her project. The video includes a montage of many historical and scenic places in and around DeWitt. She incorporated it into the second grade school curriculum. Second graders go on a virtual historic tour of DeWitt, learning about its significant locations including historic houses, buildings and landmarks, as part of their local history unit. Alicia donated a copy of the video to the DeWitt Public Library. Her parents are Alice and George Kitson. Girl Scouts Heart of Michigan invites girls everywhere to become Girl Scouts. To learn more, call 1-80049-SCOUT or visit www.gshom.org.

DeWitt wins in Classic opener bmcleod@lsj.com
LANSING — DeWitt baseball advanced to the second round of the Diamond Classic, beating Lansing Catholic 10-7 May 23 at Kircher/Municipal Park. For the Panthers, it was the realization of one of the team goals they established before the season. “One of the goals was to get to Cooley (Law School Stadium), get the invite to the Classic and play for their senior year,” DeWitt coach Al Shankel said. “They were pretty excited to accomplish one of their goals, and I was pretty happy for them.” DeWitt advanced to play Owosso May 27 at Cooley Law School Stadium, the home of the Lansing Lugnuts. The Panthers were Diamond Classic champions in 2008. DeWitt scored seven runs in the third inning to go up 7-1 over the Cougars, a team that swept a doubleheader from the Panthers early in the season. “We were urging them to not stop; we’ve been in situations like that earlier in the season, where the guys felt they had it. We were able to get three more, and we needed them,” Shankel said. Shankel said a home run by Nick McCoy, his first of his varsity career; jump started the team in the third inning. “He hit pretty well and that sparked everybody, they were pretty excited about it,” Shankel said. “Later he hit
his second career home run, evidently he liked the feeling of trotting around the bases so he decided to try it again.” Shankel said senior outfielder David Stygles made the play of the game on the last Lansing Catholic out, catching a blast to the outfield on what looked to be a sure hit that would have put the tying run on base. “It was a shot to the gap between left and center, and when he hit it I didn’t think David had a chance to get there,” Shankel said. “But he had such a great jump and he’s gotten faster since last year. He just laid out for it and made the catch, it was really impressive.” Junior Austin Rusnell was the winning pitcher. The win gives DeWitt a 19-9 overall record. The Panthers are 5-2 in the CAAC Gold Division. DeWitt was scheduled to play a doubleheader league rival Charlotte May 25, but the game was rained out. It was rescheduled for May 26. If the Panthers sweep the Orioles, they will be one game behind Haslett (8-2) for the league lead. DeWitt was unable to finish a doubleheader with Ionia earlier in the season, beating the Bulldogs in the first game, then have the second game postponed with the Panthers up 5-3 in the third inning. If DeWitt beats Charlotte and wins the rest of the postponed game with Ionia they will tie Haslett for the league crown. The Panthers begin district play May 31 at home, hosting Williamston. The game starts at 5 p.m.
DeWitt golfers won the final CAAC Gold Jamboree of the season, beating Haslett 138-156 on the par 35 Hunters’ Ridge Golf Course

State champs selected for DHS Hall of Fame DeWITT — DeWitt baseball brought home the school’s seventh state championship in 1983 under the guidance of head coach Frank Deak. Deak’s leadership, mixed with solid pitching, timely hitting, and team speed, were components for a successful season. But when you add two starters to your roster (junior left-handed pitcher Steve Holland and his sophomore brother Jon who both transferred from Grand Ledge) with exceptional defense (just four errors in seven tournament games) a successful season becomes a championship season. Eric Wieferich, who anchored the defense at shortstop, commented, “The confidence that we had in each other made us a tough team to beat. I knew if I threw the ball in the dirt that [Dave] Pettit would scoop it clean at first.” The Panthers entered 1983 as the preseason favorite in the Capital Circuit, along with Lansing Catholic Central (LCC), a team which rostered sophomore and future major leaguer John Smoltz. DeWitt returned 10 lettermen, eight of which were seniors, from a district championship team that finished 21-10 the year before. At the beginning of that baseball season, as he had done in the previous three sea-
sons, Deak distributed a 45-page playbook to his players that included drills and basic fundamentals for each facet of the game. Perhaps the most important section of the playbook was the Panther Baseball Philosophy, part of which stated, “We are of the opinion that excellence...causes people to sit up and take notice of the entire baseball program. We enjoy being examples because we feel that we represent something that can be looked up to.” The excellence from that season resulted in the Class C Baseball State Championship, the first of two for the program, and has indeed resulted in people taking notice of DeWitt baseball ever since. The championship season was almost “a championship that wasn’t.” DeWitt cruised to a Capital Circuit title with a perfect 10-0 record before entering post-season play. However, in pre-district play the Panthers found themselves down 5-2 in the sixth inning to Olivet before scoring six runs in the final two at-bats to pull out an 8-5 victory. Next, the team would face its league rival in LCC, whom they had already beaten twice earlier in the season. LCC
The 1983 DeWitt baseball team finished the year at 28-7 and won the Class C state championship. Team members include (front row, l. to r.) Nick Seifert, Tom Deak, Jon Holland, Tim Miller, Scott Jubeck, (middle row) bat boy Dan Deak, Dave Mollitor, Ken Rajala, Sam Dalman, Eric Wieferich, Mike Seifert, Scott Maiers, (back row) Head Coach Frank Deak, Kelly Lathrop, Dave Pettit, Steve Sontich, Steve Holland, Brian Webb and Assistant Coach Ron Maiers. trailed 4-2 in the seventh inning with two outs and runners on second and third base when second baseman Sam Dalman dove behind second base to snag a hard-hit bouncer, taking away what would have been a game-tying single, and threw out the batter to preserve the win. The pitchers duel ended in DeWitt’s favor with Steve Holland earning the win, giving up three hits to go along with 13 strikeouts. DeWitt managed just two hits, one of which came off the bat of senior Steve Sontich for a two-run triple. In the district championship game, the Panthers pieced together seven hits and capitalized on six costly Maple Valley errors en route to a 5-0 victory behind the arm of Sontich, who held the Lions to four hits. Regional action took DeWitt to Grandville Calvin Christian where they would face #1 ranked Montague in the semifinal. The Mohawks and their perfect 27-0 record threatened in almost every inning but scored only one run against Sontich and the #7 ranked Panthers. Trailing 2-1 with one out in the sixth inning and runners on first and second base, Montague singled to right fielder Ken Rajala, who threw home to cut down the would-be tying run. DeWitt had only three hits – a triple in the first inning by Tom Deak who later scored on a ground out, an RBI single by Jon Holland in the sixth, and Scott Maiers contributing the final hit – but that was enough for the 4-1 win.

In the regional final, the Panthers pounded out 10 hits to beat Morley-Stanwood 15-10, with Steve Holland earning the win. Dave Mollitor and Deak each hit tworun home runs; Rajala contributed four RBIs on two hits, and Sontich and Jon Holland each had two hits and two RBIs a piece. Seeking two more wins, Frank Deak led his team to Eastern Michigan University, site of the state semifinals and finals. In semifinal action, the Panthers faced a 24-4 Union City team. DeWitt took advantage of nine Charger walks and won 8-2 behind the strong arm of Sontich, notching his 10th win. Steve Holland would take the ball against Lake Fenton (30-9) in the championship game. The Devils and the Panthers were scoreless through four innings until Steve Holland doubled in the alley, scoring Rajala, Deak, and Sontich. After Lake Fenton scored one in the top of the sixth, DeWitt answered with two of their own to seal a 5-1 victory, crowning the Panthers with the Class C State Championship – the first for mid-Michigan in baseball since 1977 and the first for Clinton County since the MHSAA started sponsoring state baseball playoffs in 1971. DeWitt finished the remarkable season with a 28-7 record. “There was ‘no-quit’ in these guys. They were the first of many teams over the years to take on that attitude toward baseball, and I hope to life in general. We, as coaches,” Deak said, quick to acknowledge assistant coach Ron Maiers, “looked at baseball as teaching moments first and coaching moments second.”
